Search

Interstellar dust extinction curves provide valuable information about dust properties, including the composition and size of the dust grains, and are essential to correct observations for the effects of interstellar dust. In this work, we measure a representative sample of near-infrared (NIR; 0.8-5.5 $\mu$m) spectroscopic extinction curves for the first time, enabling us to investigate the extinction at wavelengths where it is usually only measured in broad photometric bands. We use IRTF/SpeX spectra of a sample of reddened and comparison stars to measure 15 extinction curves with the pair method. Our sample spans A(V) values from 0.78 to 5.65 and R(V) values from 2.43 to 5.33. We confirm that the NIR extinction curves are well fit by a power law, with indices and amplitudes differing from sight line to sight line. Our average diffuse NIR extinction curve can be represented by a single power law with index $\alpha = 1.7$, but because of the sight line-to-sight line variations, the shape of any average curve will depend on the parental sample. We find that most of the variation in our sample can be linked to the ratio of total-to-selective extinction R(V), a rough measurement of the average dust grain size. Two sight lines in our sample clearly show the ice extinction feature at 3 $\mu$m, which can be fitted by a modified Drude profile. We find tentative ice detections with slightly over 3$\sigma$ significance in two other sight lines. We present mid infrared imaging of two young clusters, the Coronet in the CrA cloud core and B59 in the Pipe Nebula, using the FORCAST camera on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. We also analyze Herschel Space Observatory PACS and SPIRE images of the associated clouds. The two clusters are at similar, and very close, distances. Star formation is ongoing in the Coronet, which hosts at least one Class 0 source and several pre-stellar cores, which may collapse and form stars. The B59 cluster is older, although it still has a few Class I sources, and is less compact. The CrA cloud has a diameter of about 0.16 pc, and we determine a dust temperature of 15.7 K and a star formation efficiency of about 27 %, while the B59 core is approximately twice as large, has a dust temperature of about 11.4 K and a star formation efficiency of about 14 %. We infer that the gas densities are much higher in the Coronet, which has also formed intermediate mass stars, while B59 has only formed low-mass stars., 15 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We describe the Faint Object infraRed CAmera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST) which is presently operating as a facility instrument on the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). FORCAST provides imaging and moderate resolution spectroscopy capability over the 5–40[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m wavelength range. In imaging mode, FORCAST has a 3.4[Formula: see text] field-of-view with 0.768[Formula: see text] pixels. Using grisms, FORCAST provides long-slit low-resolution ([Formula: see text]–300) and short-slit, cross-dispersed medium-resolution spectroscopic modes ([Formula: see text]–1200) over select wavelengths. Preceded by both Spitzer and Herschel, the discovery phase space for FORCAST lies in providing unique photometric bands and/or spectroscopic coverage, higher spatial resolution and exploration of the brightest sources which typically saturate space observatories.

The benchmark exoplanet GJ 1214b is one of the best studied transiting planets in the transition zone between rocky Earth-sized planets and gas or ice giants. This class of super-Earth/mini-Neptune planets is unknown in our Solar System, yet is one of the most frequently detected classes of exoplanets. Understanding the transition from rocky to gaseous planets is a crucial step in the exploration of extrasolar planetary systems, in particular with regard to the potential habitability of this class of planets. GJ 1214b has already been studied in detail from various platforms at many different wavelengths. Our airborne observations with SOFIA add information in the Paschen-alpha cont. 1.9 micron infrared wavelength band, which is not accessible by any other current ground- or space-based instrument due to telluric absorption or limited spectral coverage. We used FLIPO and FPI+ on SOFIA to comprehensively analyse the transmission signal of the possible water-world GJ 1214b through photometric observations during transit in three optical and one infrared channels. We present four simultaneous light curves and corresponding transit depths in three optical and one infrared channel, which we compare to previous observations and state-of-the-art synthetic atmospheric models of GJ 1214b. The final precision in transit depth is between 1.5 and 2.5 times the theoretical photon noise limit, not sensitive enough to constrain the theoretical models any better than previous observations. This is the first exoplanet observation with SOFIA that uses its full set of instruments available to exoplanet spectrophotometry. The formation processes and the exact appearance of the dust torus and broad line region (BLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are under debate. Theoretical studies show a possible connection between the dust torus and BLR through a common origin in the accretion disk. However observationally the dust torus and BLR are typically studied separately. NGC~4151 is possibly one of the best suited Seyfert~1 galaxies for simultaneous examinations because of its high number of both photometric and spectroscopic observations in the past. Here we compare changes of the dust radius to shape variations of broad emission lines (BEL). While the radius of the dust torus decreased by almost a factor of two from 2004 to 2006 shape variations can be seen in the red wing of BELs of NGC~4151. These simultaneous changes are discussed in a dust and BEL formation scheme. We also use the BEL shape variations to assess possible cloud distributions, especially in azimuthal direction, which could be responsible for the observed variations. Our findings can best be explained in the framework of a dust inflated accretion disk. The changes in the BELs suggest that this dusty cloud formation does not happen continuously, and over the whole accretion disk, but on the contrary in spatially confined areas over rather short amount of times. IC 2144 is a small reflection nebula located in the zone of avoidance near the Galactic anticenter. It has been investigated here largely on the basis of Keck/HIRES optical spectroscopy (R ~ 48,000) and a SpeX spectrogram in the near-IR (R = 2000) obtained at the NASA IRTF. The only star in the nebula that is obvious in the optical or near-IR is the peculiar emission-line object MWC 778 (V = 12.8), which resembles a T Tauri star in some respects. What appear to be F- or G-type absorption features are detectable in its optical region under the very complex emission line spectrum; their radial velocity agrees with the CO velocity of the larger cloud in which IC 2144 is embedded. There are significant differences between the spectrum of the brightest area of the nebula and of MWC 778, the presumed illuminator, an issue discussed in some detail. The distance of IC 2144 is inferred to be about 1.0 kpc by reference to other star-forming regions in the vicinity. The extinction is large, as demonstrated by [Fe II] emission line ratios in the near-IR and by the strength of the diffuse interstellar band spectrum; a provisional value of A_V of 3.0 mag was assumed. The SED of MWC 778 rises steeply beyond about 1 $\mu$m, with a slope characteristic of a Class I source. Integration of the flux distribution leads to an IR luminosity of about 510 L_solar. If MWC 778 is indeed a F- or G-type pre--main-sequence star several magnitudes above the ZAMS, a population of faint emission Halpha stars would be expected in the vicinity. We present an analysis of the 0.95-14.5 micron spectral energy distributions of nine field ultracool dwarfs with spectral types ranging from L1 to T4.5. Effective temperatures, gravities, and condensate cloud sedimentation efficiencies are derived by comparing the data to synthetic spectra computed from atmospheric models that self-consistently include the formation of condensate clouds. Derived effective temperatures decrease steadily through the L1 to T4.5 spectral types and we confirm that the effective temperatures of ultracool dwarfs at the L/T transition are nearly constant, decreasing by only ~200 K from spectral types L7.5 to T4.5. The two objects in our sample with very red J-Ks colors are best fitted with synthetic spectra that have thick clouds which hints at a possible correlation between the near-infrared colors of L dwarfs and the condensate cloud properties. The fits to the two T dwarfs in our sample (T2 and T4.5) also suggest that the clouds become thinner in this spectral class, in agreement with previous studies. Restricting the fits to narrower wavelength ranges (i.e., individual photometric bands) almost always yields excellent agreement between the data and models. Limitations in our knowledge of the opacities of key absorbers such as FeH, VO, and CH4 at certain wavelengths remain obvious, however. The effective temperatures obtained by fitting the narrower wavelength ranges can show a large scatter compared to the values derived by fitting the full spectral energy distributions; deviations are typically ~200 K and in the worst cases, up to 700 K.

We present 0.8-5.2 micron spectroscopy of the compact source at the base of a variable nebula (McNeil's Nebula Object) in the Lynds 1630 dark cloud that went into outburst in late 2003. The spectrum of this object reveals an extremely red continuum, CO bands at 2.3-2.5 microns in emission, a deep 3.0 micron ice absorption feature, and a solid state CO absorption feature at 4.7 microns. In addition, emission lines of H, Ca II, Mg I, and Na I are present. The Paschen lines exhibit P Cygni profiles, as do two lines of He I, although the emission features are very weak in the latter. The Brackett lines, however, are seen to be purely in emission. The P Cygni profiles clearly indicate that mass outflow is occurring in a wind with a velocity of ~400 km/s. The H line ratios do not yield consistent estimates of the reddening, nor do they agree with the extinction estimated from the ice feature (A_V ~ 11). We propose that these lines are optically thick and are produced in a dense, ionized wind. The near-infrared spectrum does not appear similar to any known FUor or EXor object. However, all evidence suggests that McNeil's Nebula Object is a heavily-embedded low-mass Class I protostar, surrounded by a disk, whose brightening is due to a recent accretion event., 11 pages, 2 ps figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present a method for correcting near-infrared medium-resolution spectra for telluric absorption. The method makes use of a spectrum of an A0V star, observed near in time and close in airmass to the target object, and a high-resolution model of Vega, to construct a telluric correction spectrum that is free of stellar absorption features. The technique was designed specifically to perform telluric corrections on spectra obtained with SpeX, a 0.8-5.5 micron, medium-resolution cross-dispersed spectrograph at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, and uses the fact that for medium resolutions there exist spectral regions uncontaminated by atmospheric absorption lines. However, it is also applicable (in a somewhat modified form) to spectra obtained with other near-infrared spectrographs. An IDL-based code that carries out the procedures is available for downloading via the World Wide Web from the IRTF website.

To better understand the early stages of massive star cluster evolution we have obtained J,H,K', and N (10.8 micron) images of the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy He 2-10. The N-band images were obtained with the Gemini North telescope and reveal four of the five enshrouded clusters, or "ultradense HII regions" (UDHIIs), recently discovered in radio maps. None of these sources appears in either the optical HST images or the near-infrared images. They comprise about 60% of the total N-band flux from He 2-10 and, we suspect, a similar fraction of the total far infrared flux measured by IRAS. The inferred spectra of the UDHIIs are very similar to those of Galactic ultracompact HII regions and we have modeled the UDHIIs under the assumption that they are "scaled-up" versions of these objects. The bolometric luminosity of the brightest UDHII is estimated to be ~2x10^9 L_sun, and the total mass of the dust and gas is ~10^7 M_sun. The mass of the enshrouded stellar cluster must be > 2.5x10^6 M_sun and the age must be < 4.8x10^6 yr. All of the stellar clusters within the UDHIIs must have ages less than about 5x10^6 yr and masses greater than about 5x10^5 M_sun. The logarithmic ratios of the radio to far infrared flux densities for the individual UDHIIs, and He 2-10 as a whole, are significantly larger than the average for normal galaxies, but comparable to those for ultraluminous infrared galaxies. Large ratios for some starburst galaxies may indicate that a significant fraction of the far infrared flux arises from UDHIIs. If all of the far infrared flux from He 2-10 and other starbursts is produced by heavily obscured regions, the observed correlation between UV continuum slope and infrared-to-ultraviolet flux ratio in starbursts cannot be due primarily to UV reprocessing by dust in a foreground screen.

Debris disk morphology is wavelength dependent due to the wide range of particle sizes and size-dependent dynamics influenced by various forces. Resolved images of nearby debris disks reveal complex disk structures that are difficult to distinguish from their spectral energy distributions. Therefore, multi-wavelength resolved images of nearby debris systems provide an essential foundation to understand the intricate interplay between collisional, gravitational, and radiative forces that govern debris disk structures. We present the SOFIA 35 um resolved disk image of epsilon Eri, the closest debris disk around a star similar to the early Sun. Combining with the Spitzer resolved image at 24 um and 15-38 um excess spectrum, we examine two proposed origins of the inner debris in epsilon Eri: (1) in-situ planetesimal belt(s) and (2) dragged-in grains from the cold outer belt. We find that the presence of in-situ dust-producing planetesmial belt(s) is the most likely source of the excess emission in the inner 25 au region. Although a small amount of dragged-in grains from the cold belt could contribute to the excess emission in the inner region, the resolution of the SOFIA data is high enough to rule out the possibility that the entire inner warm excess results from dragged-in grains, but not enough to distinguish one broad inner disk from two narrow belts.

We use Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Faint Object Camera (FOC) ultraviolet (UV) and WFPC2 optical images in conjunction with UV spectroscopic observations taken with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph to examine the star formation history and properties of the interacting galaxy system NGC 1741 in the Hickson Compact Group 31. The high spatial resolution afforded by HST has allowed us to identify a large number of starburst knots, or super?star clusters (SSCs), in the starburst regions of this system. Photometry of these SSCs in the UV and optical bands indicates that most of these objects have ages of a few Myr, with a few up to ?100 Myr, and masses between 104 and 106 M?. The estimated age is confirmed by a spectral synthesis analysis of one knot for which we have obtained a UV spectrum. The V-band luminosity function of the SSCs is well represented by a power law (L) ~ L-? with an index of -1.85, with no evidence of a turnover brighter than the completeness limit. These properties are in good agreement with those found for SSCs in other starburst galaxies. Our results support the suggestion that some of these SSCs may be extremely young globular clusters formed in a relatively recent starburst episode that has been triggered by a merger event.

We present new high resolution B- ad I--band images of a nearly complete sample of 9 warm (f(sub 25)/f(sub 60) > 0.2) ultraluminous galaxies (ULIGs) obtained with the Wide Field Planetary Camera (WFPC2) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).

The Astrophysical Journal 776.1 (2013): 21 reproduced by permission of the AAS, The Herschel Space Observatory was used to observe ∼120 pre-main-sequence stars in Taurus as part of the GASPS Open Time Key project. Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer was used to measure the continuum as well as several gas tracers such as [O I] 63 μm, [O I] 145 μm, [C II] 158 μm, OH, H2O, and CO. The strongest line seen is [O I] at 63 μm. We find a clear correlation between the strength of the [O I] 63 μm line and the 63 μm continuum for disk sources. In outflow sources, the line emission can be up to 20 times stronger than in disk sources, suggesting that the line emission is dominated by the outflow. The tight correlation seen for disk sources suggests that the emission arises from the inner disk (, F. We describe the development of a software simulator to support development of the Habitable Zone Planet Finder Spectrograph (HPF), currently being designed to search for planets around M dwarf stars. HPF is a near infrared R 50,000 cross-dispersed radial velocity spectrograph using a HAWAII-2 RG (H2RG) NIR array, is cooled to 200K, is fiber-fed, and operates in the Y and J bands. This instrument is funded and is in the design phase, and will be commissioned on the 10m Hobby-Eberly Telescope in 2015. Our simulations process high-resolution stellar spectra through models of the instrument, detector, and a simple extraction pipeline. Our objective is to create a a fully functional simulation of the entire HPF system, which can be used to guide spectrograph design and to aid in observation planning. We describe the fundamental design of these simulations and the tests we have performed, which verify that the simulator code is stable with inclusion of simple detector effects, and is ready for expansion to account for more complex factors such as order curvature.

We present high S/N, moderate resolution near-infrared spectra, as well as 10 micron imaging, for the brightest members of the central stellar cluster in the W40 HII region, obtained using the SpeX and MIRSI instruments at NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility. Using these observations combined with archival Spitzer Space Telescope data, we have determined the spectral classifications, extinction, distances, and spectral energy distributions for the brightest members of the cluster. Of the eight objects observed, we identify four main sequence (MS) OB stars, two Herbig Ae/Be stars, and two low-mass young stellar objects. Strong HeI absorption at 1.083 micron in the MS star spectra strongly suggests that at least some of these sources are in fact close binaries. Two out of the four MS stars also show significant infrared excesses typical of circumstellar disks. Extinctions and distances were determined for each MS star by fitting model stellar atmospheres to the SEDs. We estimate a distance to the cluster of between 455 and 535 pc, which agrees well with earlier (but far less precise) distance estimates. We conclude that the late-O star we identify is the dominant source of LyC luminosity needed to power the W40 HII region and is the likely source of the stellar wind that has blown a large (~4 pc) pinched-waist bubble observed in wide field mid-IR images. We also suggest that 3.6 cm radio emission observed from some of the sources in the cluster is likely not due to emission from ultra-compact HII regions, as suggested in other work, due to size constraints based on our derived distance to the cluster. Finally, we also present a discussion of the curious source IRS 3A, which has a very strong mid-IR excess (despite its B3 MS classification) and appears to be embedded in a dusty envelope roughly 2700 AU in size., Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal. 29 pages, 10 figures

We present Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared IRS spectra, supplemented by ground-based optical observations, of the classical novae V1974 Cyg, V382 Vel, and V1494 Aql more than 11, 8, and 4 years after outburst respectively. The spectra are dominated by forbidden emission from neon and oxygen, though in some cases, there are weak signatures of magnesium, sulfur, and argon. We investigate the geometry and distribution of the late time ejecta by examination of the emission line profiles. Using nebular analysis in the low density regime, we estimate lower limits on the abundances in these novae. In V1974 Cyg and V382 Vel, our observations confirm the abundance estimates presented by other authors and support the claims that these eruptions occurred on ONe white dwarfs. We report the first detection of neon emission in V1494 Aql and show that the system most likely contains a CO white dwarf., 22 pages, 12 figures

We present new mid-infrared images of the central region of the Orion Nebula using the newly commissioned SOFIA airborne telescope and its 5 -- 40 micron camera FORCAST. We examine eight young stellar objects in the OMC-2 star forming region based on observations from the SOFIA/FORCAST early science phase, the Spitzer Space Telescope, the Herschel Space Observatory, 2MASS, APEX, and other results in the literature. We show the spectral energy distributions of these objects from near-infrared to millimeter wavelengths, and compare the SEDs with those of sheet collapse models of protostars and circumstellar disks. Four of the objects can be modelled as protostars with infalling envelopes, two as young stars surrounded by disks, and the remaining two objects have double-peaked SEDs. We model the double-peaked sources as binaries containing a young star with a disk and a protostar. The six most luminous sources are found in a dense group within a 0.15 x 0.25 pc region; these sources have luminosities ranging from 300 L_sun to 20 L_sun. The most embedded source (OMC-2 FIR 4) can be fit by a class 0 protostar model having a luminosity of ~50 L_sun and mass infall rate of ~10^-4 solar masses per year., Accepted by ApJ Letters

Astronomy and Astrophysics 538 (2012): A20 reproduced with permission from Astronomy & Astrophysics, We present detailed model fits to observations of the disc around the Herbig Ae star HD 163296. This well-studied object has an age of ∼4Myr, with evidence of a circumstellar disc extending out to ∼540AU. We use the radiation thermo-chemical disc code ProDiMo to model the gas and dust in the circumstellar disc of HD 163296, and attempt to determine the disc properties by fitting to observational line and continuum data. These include new Herschel/PACS observations obtained as part of the open-time key program GASPS (GAS in Protoplanetary Systems), consisting of a detection of the [Oi] 63 μm line and upper limits for several other far infrared lines. We complement this with continuum data and ground-based observations of the 12CO 3–2, 2–1 and 13CO J = 1–0 line transitions, as well as an upper limit for the H2 0–0 S(1) transition.We explore the effects of stellar ultraviolet variability and dust settling on the line emission, and on the derived disc properties. Our fitting efforts lead to derived gas/dust ratios in the range 9–100, depending on the assumptions made.We note that the line fluxes are sensitive in general to the degree of dust settling in the disc, with an increase in line flux for settled models. This is most pronounced in lines which are formed in the warm gas in the inner disc, but the low excitation molecular lines are also affected. This has serious implications for attempts to derive the disc gas mass from line observations. We derive fractional PAH abundances between 0.007 and 0.04 relative to ISM levels. Using a stellar and UV excess input spectrum based on a detailed analysis of observations, we find that the all observations are consistent with the previously assumed disc geometry

The BN/KL region of the Orion Nebula is the nearest region of high mass star formation in our galaxy. As such, it has been the subject of intense investigation at a variety of wavelengths, which have revealed it to be brightest in the infrared to sub-mm wavelength regime. Using the newly commissioned SOFIA airborne telescope and its 5-40 micron camera FORCAST, images of the entire BN/KL complex have been acquired. The 31.5 and 37.1 micron images represent the highest resolution observations (31.5 microns, and that this distinction goes instead to the source IRc4. It was determined from these images and derived dust color temperature maps that IRc4 is also likely to be self-luminous. A new source of emission has also been identified at wavelengths >31.5 microns that coincides with the northeastern outflow lobe from the protostellar disk associated with radio source I., 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

The massive star forming region W3 was observed with the faint object infrared camera for the SOFIA telescope (FORCAST) as part of the Short Science program. The 6.4, 6.6, 7.7, 19.7, 24.2, 31.5 and 37.1 \um bandpasses were used to observe the emission of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules, Very Small Grains and Big Grains. Optical depth and color temperature maps of W3A show that IRS2 has blown a bubble devoid of gas and dust of $\sim$0.05 pc radius. It is embedded in a dusty shell of ionized gas that contributes 40% of the total 24 \um emission of W3A. This dust component is mostly heated by far ultraviolet, rather than trapped Ly$\alpha$ photons. This shell is itself surrounded by a thin ($\sim$0.01 pc) photodissociation region where PAHs show intense emission. The infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of three different zones located at 8, 20 and 25\arcsec from IRS2, show that the peak of the SED shifts towards longer wavelengths, when moving away from the star. Adopting the stellar radiation field for these three positions, DUSTEM model fits to these SEDs yield a dust-to-gas mass ratio in the ionized gas similar to that in the diffuse ISM. However, the ratio of the IR-to-UV opacity of the dust in the ionized shell is increased by a factor $\simeq$3 compared to the diffuse ISM., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ letters; 13 pages, 3 figures 1 table

We have searched for compact stellar structures within 17 tidal tails in 13 different interacting galaxies using F606W- and F814W- band images from the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The sample of tidal tails includes a diverse population of optical properties, merging galaxy mass ratios, HI content, and ages. Combining our tail sample with Knierman et al. (2003), we find evidence of star clusters formed in situ with Mv < -8.5 and V-I < 2.0 in 10 of 23 tidal tails; we are able to identify cluster candidates to Mv = -6.5 in the closest tails. Three tails offer clear examples of "beads on a string" star formation morphology in V-I color maps. Two tails present both tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidates and cluster candidates. Statistical diagnostics indicate that clusters in tidal tails may be drawn from the same power-law luminosity functions (with logarithmic slopes ~ -2 - -2.5) found in quiescent spiral galaxies and the interiors of interacting systems. We find that the tail regions with the largest number of observable clusters are relatively young (< 250 Myr old) and bright (V < 24 mag arcsec^(-2)), probably attributed to the strong bursts of star formation in interacting systems soon after periapse. Otherwise, we find no statistical difference between cluster-rich and cluster-poor tails in terms of many observable characteristics, though this analysis suffers from complex, unresolved gas dynamics and projection effects., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 27 pages, 8 figures

We present a 0.8 -5 micron spectral library of 210 cool stars observed at a resolving power of R = lambda / Delta lambda ~ 2000 with the medium-resolution infrared spectrograph, SpeX, at the 3.0 m NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The stars have well established MK spectral classifications and are mostly restricted to near-solar metallicities. The sample contains the F, G, K, and M spectral types with luminosity classes between I and V, but also includes some AGB, carbon, and S stars. In contrast to some other spectral libraries, the continuum shape of the spectra are measured and preserved in the data reduction process. The spectra are absolutely flux calibrated using Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) photometry. Potential uses of the library include studying the physics of cool stars, classifying and studying embedded young clusters and optically obscured regions of the Galaxy, evolutionary population synthesis to study unresolved stellar populations in optically-obscured regions of galaxies, and synthetic photometry. Here, we report on the first successful exoplanet transit observation with the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). We observed a single transit of the hot Jupiter HD 189733 b, obtaining two simultaneous primary transit lightcurves in the B and z′ bands as a demonstration of SOFIA’s capability to perform absolute transit photometry. We present a detailed description of our data reduction, in particular, the correlation of photometric systematics with various in-flight parameters unique to the airborne observing environment. The derived transit depths at B and z′ wavelengths confirm a previously reported slope in the optical transmission spectrum of HD 189733 b. Our results give new insights to the current discussion about the source of this Rayleigh scattering in the upper atmosphere and the question of fixed limb darkening coefficients in fitting routines.

We present deep U, narrow-V, and I-band images of the ultracompact blue dwarf galaxy HS 0822+3542, obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys / High Resolution Channel of the Hubble Space Telescope. This object is extremely metal-poor (12 + log(O/H) = 7.45) and resides in a nearby void. The images resolve it into two physically separate components that were previously described as star clusters in a single galaxy. The primary component is only \~100 pc in maximum extent, and consists of starburst region surrounded by a ring-like structure of relatively redder stars. The secondary component is ~50 pc in size and lies at a projected distance of ~80 pc away from the primary, and is also actively star-forming. We estimate masses ~10^7 M(sol) and ~10^6 M(sol) for the two components, based on their luminosities, with an associated dynamical timescale for the system of a few Myr. This timescale and the structure of the components suggests that a collision between them triggered their starbursts. The spectral energy distributions of both components can be fitted by the combination of recent (few Myr old) starburst and an evolved (several Gyr old) underlying stellar population, similar to larger blue compact dwarf galaxies. This indicates that despite its metal deficiency the object is not forming its first generation of stars. However, the small sizes and masses of the two components suggests that HS 0822+3542 represents a dwarf galaxy in the process of assembling from clumps of stars intermediate in size between globular clusters and objects previously classified as galaxies. Its relatively high ratio of neutral gas mass to stellar mass (~1) and high specific star formation rate, log(SFR/M(sol) = -9.2, suggests that it is still converting much of its gas to stars., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters

The nuclear starburst in M82 is host to over 20 infrared-bright, dense, young super star clusters (SSCs). We use high-resolution near-infrared Keck/NIRSPEC echelle spectroscopy to measure the stellar velocity dispersions. The SSCs are resolved in Hubble Space Telescope images, from which we measure half-light radii and integrated luminosities. We calculate virial masses for the SSCs, and compare the observed light-to-mass ratios to population synthesis models to constrain the initial mass function. There are apparent variations of the IMF within this single starburst galaxy. We present evidence for mass segregation despite the young ages, and discuss implications for the interpretation of the IMF.

We investigate the Initial Mass Function and mass segregation in super star cluster M82-F with high resolution Keck/NIRSPEC echelle spectroscopy. Cross-correlation with template supergiant spectra provides the velocity dispersion of the cluster, enabling measurement of the kinematic (virial) mass of the cluster when combined with sizes from NICMOS and ACS images. We find a mass of 6.6 +/- 0.9 x 10^5 M_sun based on near-IR light and 7.0 +/- 1.2 x 10^5 M_sun based on optical light. Using PSF-fitting photometry, we derive the cluster's light-to-mass ratio in both near-IR and optical light, and compare to population synthesis models. The ratios are inconsistent with a normal stellar initial mass function for the adopted age of 40 to 60 Myr, suggesting a deficiency of low-mass stars within the volume sampled. King model light profile fits to new HST/ACS images of M82-F, in combination with fits to archival near-IR images, indicate mass segregation in the cluster. We derive general equations for non-linearity corrections and statistical uncertainty (variance) estimates for data acquired with near-infrared detectors employing correlated double sampling, multiple correlated double sampling (Fowler sampling) and uniformly-spaced continuous readout techniques. We compare our equation for the variance on each pixel associated with Fowler sampling with measurements obtained from data taken with the array installed in the near-infrared cross-dispersed spectrograph (SpeX) at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and find that it provides an accurate representation of the empirical results. This comparison also reveals that the read noise associated with a single readout of the SpeX array increases with the number of non-destructive reads, n_r, as n_r^0.16. This implies that the {effective} read noise of a stored image decreases as n_r^-0.34, shallower than the expected rate of n_r^-0.5. The cause of this read noise behavior is uncertain, but may be due to heating of the array as a result of the multiple read outs. We present deep U, V and I band images of the "ultracompact" blue dwarf galaxy POX 186 obtained with the Planetary Camera 2 of the Hubble Space Telescope. We have also obtained a near-ultraviolet spectrum of the object with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, and combine this with a new ground-based optical spectrum. The images confirm the galaxy to be extremely small, with a maximum extent of only 300 pc, a luminosity ~ 10^-4 L*, and an estimated mass ~ 10^7 M(sun). Its morphology is highly asymmetric, with a tail of material on its western side that may be tidal in origin. The U-band image shows this tail to be part of a stream of material in which stars have recently formed. Most of the star formation in the galaxy is however concentrated in a central, compact (d ~ 10 - 15 pc) star cluster. The outer regions of the galaxy are significantly redder than the cluster, with V - I colors consistent with a population dominated by K and M stars. While these results rule out earlier speculation that POX 186 is a protogalaxy, its morphology, mass and active star formation suggest that it represents a recent (within ~ 10^8 yr) collision between two clumps of stars of sub-galactic size (~ 100 pc). POX 186 may thus be a very small dwarf galaxy that, dynamically speaking, is still in the process of formation. This interpretation is supported by the fact that it resides in a void, so its morphology cannot be explained as the result of an encounter with a more massive galaxy. Clumps of stars this small may represent the building blocks required by hierarchical models of galaxy formation, and these results also support the recent "downsizing" picture of galaxy formation in which the least massive objects are the last to form., accepted for publication in ApJ; 23 pages, 5 figures

We present medium-resolution z-, J-, and H-band spectra of four late-type dwarfs with spectral types ranging from M8 to L7.5. In an attempt to determine the origin of numerous weak absorption features throughout their near-infrared spectra, and motivated by the recent tentative identification of the E 4\Pi- A ^4\Pi system of FeH near 1.6 microns in umbral and cool star spectra, we have compared the dwarf spectra to a laboratory FeH emission spectrum. We have identified nearly 100 FeH absorption features in the z-, J-, and H-band spectra of the dwarfs. In particular, we have identified 34 features which dominate the appearance of the H-band spectra of the dwarfs and which appear in the laboratory FeH spectrum. Finally, all of the features are either weaker or absent in the spectrum of the L7.5 dwarf which is consistent with the weakening of the known FeH bandheads in the spectra of the latest L dwarfs., Comment: accepted by ApJ

Some hot, massive, population-I Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars of the carbon subclass are known to be prolific dust-producers. How dust can form in such a hostile environment remains a mystery. Here we report the discovery of a relatively cool, extended, multi-arc dust envelope around the star WR112, most likely formed by wind-wind collision in a long-period binary system. We derive the binary orbital parameters, the dust temperature and the dust mass distributions in the envelope. We find that amorphous carbon is a main constituent of the dust, in agreement with earlier estimates and theoretical predictions. However, the characteristic size of the dust grains is estimated to be ~1 micron, significantly larger than theoretical limits. The dust production rate is 6.1*10^[-7] M_Sun / yr and the total detectable dust mass is found to be about 2.8*10^[-5] M_Sun (for d=4.15 kpc). We also show that, despite the hostile environment, at least ~20% of the initially-formed dust may reach the interstellar medium., 8pp, 3 figures (2 of them in colour). Ultraviolet (UV) images of nearby star-forming galaxies obtained with the Faint Object Camera aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) reveal that the starburst regions in these objects are composed of numerous bright, compact knots of hot stars superposed on a diffuse, extended background. I present several examples of HST UV images of these regions in various galaxies and discuss the properties of the starburst knots and the diffuse background, as well as the implications for the star-formation histories in these objects. I briefly compare the UV images of these starburst regions with images obtained at longer wavelengths. The unified model of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) presumes the existence of a so-called dusty torus around the outer edge of the broad-line region. Despite the solid observational evidence for the existence of dust around AGNs and our growing information on the characteristic scales of these obscuring tori, the origin of this dust and its morphology are not yet well understood. Using dust reverberation mapping, we monitor the effects of AGN continuum variability to determine the temperature and covering factor of the circumnuclear dust, in order to constrain the physical conditions for dust survival and formation in the radiation field of the AGN. Multi-band photometry observations in the z,Y, J,H, and K bands were carried out on the nucleus of the prototypical Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 over six epochs from 2010 January to June, supported by spectroscopic observations, in order to investigate the response of the hot dust to varying accretion disk emission. Our data confirm that most of the hot dust reacts to increased radiation from the central source with a delayed brightening of ∼50 days. In accretion disk brightening, we see no signatures of dust destruction in our data. The innermost dust appears to increase in temperature rather than sublimate, suggesting that it is cooler than sublimation temperature and located beyond the current sublimation radius. We characterize the dust geometry by interpreting the wavelength-dependent reverberation response with a simplified torus model, pointing to a static radially extended distribution of the central (∼0.1 pc) hot dust.

We have obtained a Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet image and spectrum of the nearby Wolf-Rayet galaxy NGC 1741. The spatial morphology from the Faint Object Camera image is dominated by two main starburst centers, each being about 100 times as luminous as 30 Doradus. Both starburst centers are composed of several intense knots of recent star formation. A Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph spectrum of a portion of the southern starburst center is consistent with a population of young stars following a Salpeter IMF for masses above approx 15 Msun (lower mass stars may also be present), and extending up to approx 100 Msun; about 10^4 O-type stars are inferred from the UV luminosity. Numerous strong interstellar lines are detected. Although not resolved, their strength suggests that they are formed in individual bubbles and shells with velocities up to a few hundred kms. The red wing of the Lyman-alpha absorption profile indicates the presence of several neutral hydrogen components, one in our own Galaxy and the others at or close to the distance of NGC 1741. Overall, the stellar and interstellar line spectrum, as well as the continuum shape of NGC 1741, strongly resembles star-forming galaxies recently discovered at high redshift.

Wolf-Rayet (W-R) galaxies are a subset of emission-line galaxies in whose integrated spectra a broad (i.e., stellar in origin) He II λ 4686 emission feature has been detected. This line is a prominent emission feature in the spectra of WN stars. The presence of 102 to 105 W-R stars in these galaxies has been inferred from a comparison of the luminosity and equivalent width of this feature in the integrated galaxy spectra with those of the corresponding line in the spectra of Galactic and LMC WN stars. Most W-R galaxies exhibit other properties indicative of a very young starburst population, such as a relatively “blue” continuum and a strong nebular emission line spectrum due to photoionization by large numbers of hot, early-type stars. Their spectra are therefore very similar to to those of giant H II regions. There are currently about 40 W-R. galaxies known.

Using the results of the most recent stellar atmosphere models applied to a sample of hot stars, we construct calibrations of effective temperature (T(sub eff)), and gravity (log(sub g)) with a spectral type and luminosity class for Galactic 0-type and early B-type stars. From the model results we also derive an empirical relation between the bolometric correction and T(sub eff) and log g. Using a sample of stars with known distances located in OB associations in the Galaxy and the Large Magellanic Cloud, we derive a new calibration of M(sub v) with spectral class. With these new calibrations and the stellar atmosphere models of Kurucz, we calculate the physical parameters and ionizing photon luminosities in the H(0) and He(0) continua for O and early B-type stars. We find substantial differences between our values of the Lyman- continuum luminosity and those reported in the literature. We also discuss the systematic discrepancy between O-type stellar masses derived from spectroscopic models and those derived from evolutionary tracks. Most likely, the cause of this 'mass discrepancy' lies primarily in the atmospheric models, which are plane parallel and hydrostatic and therefore do not account for an extended atmosphere and the velocity fields in a stellar wind. Finally, we present a new computation of the Lyman-continuum luminosity from 429 known O stars located within 2.5 kpc of the Sun. We find the total ionizing luminosity from this population ((Q(sub 0)(sup T(sub ot))) = 7.0 x 10(exp 51) photons/s) to be 47% larger than that determined using the Lyman continuum values tabulated by Panagia.

The hot star population in H II regions, H II galaxies, and starburst galaxies is often described in terms of the number of 'equivalent' O stars of a single representative subtype and luminosity class needed to produce the ionizing luminosity deduced from the nebular recombination lines in the optical spectra. In this paper we define conversion factors eta(sub 0), eta(sub 1), and zeta(sub 5000) with which the total number of O V stars and their flux contribution at 5000 A can be derived from the number of these 'equivalent' stars. These quantities depend primarily on three parameters: the slope and upper mass limit of the stellar mass function and the metallicity of the region. Using the latest stellar atmosphere and evolution models, we calculate eta(sub 0), eta(sub 1), and zeta(sub 5000) for a large number of values of these parameters. The results are presented in tabular as well as graphical form. We apply our results to two H II regions for which the hot star population are known and find that the predicted numbers of O stars agree well the observed counts. In addition, we describe a method by which the values of eta(sub 0) and eta(sub 1) and the observed emission-line fluxes can be used to place constraints on the allowed values of the slope and upper mass limit of the stellar mass function in a region.

We have obtained long-slit optical spectra of 10 Wolf-Rayet galaxies and four other starburst galaxies. Using the nebular emission lines we have determined the electron temperatures, electron densities, extinctions, oxygen abundances, mass of ionized hydrogen, and numbers of ionizing photons due to hot stars in these galaxies. The various forbidden line ratios clearly indicate a stellar origin for the emission-line spectrum. From the flux of the broad He II 4686 A emission feature we have estimated the number of Wolf-Rayet stars present. We have accounted for the contribution of these stars to the total ionizing flux and have calculated the ratio of the number of these stars to the number of O stars. Wolf-Rayet galaxies are among the youngest examples of the starburst phenomenon, which we observed at a propitious moment.

In order to update the classifications of O and B stars in the vicinity of the sun, moderate-resolution spectra have been obtained in the wavelength region about 4000 A to about 5000 A of 32 O and B stars without published luminosity classifications. Normalized spectra and revised spectral classifications are presented. Two of the stars are found to be members of the O3 spectral class.

Using spectroscopic parallax, the heliocentric and Galactocentric distances of nearly all of the 157 known Wolf-Rayet stars in the Galaxy were determined. Their distribution both within and perpendicular to the Galactic plane was investigated. The overall distribution within the plane reveals spiral features which are in accord with other determinations of Galactic structure. In addition, it was found that the Galactocentric location of Wolf-Rayet stars is dependent on Wolf-Rayet subtype, with late WC stars strongly confined to regions within the solar circle. However, there is only a marginal variation in the WC/WN number ratio with distance from the Galactic center. The distribution of Wolf-Rayet stars in the direction perpendicular to the plane reveals that these objects are closely confined to, but distributed asymmetrically about, the Galactic plane; the verical scale height of the distribution is about 45 pc. It is found that the sun is located about 15 pc above the plane defined by these extreme Population I objects. 54 refs.

A new method of determining the color excesses of WR stars in the Galaxy and the LMC has been developed and is used to determine the excesses for 44 Galactic and 32 LMC WR stars. The excesses are combined with line-free, narrow-band spectrophotometry to derive intrinsic colors of the WR stars of nearly all spectral subtypes. No correlation of UV spectral index or intrinsic colors with spectral subtype is found for the samples of single WN or WC stars. There is evidence that early WN stars in the LMC have flatter UV continua and redder intrinsic colors than early WN stars in the Galaxy. No separation is found between the values derived for Galactic WC stars and those obtained for LMC WC stars. The intrinsic colors are compared with those calculated from model atmospheres of WR stars and generally good agreement is found. Absolute magnitudes are derived for WR stars in the LMC and for those Galactic WR stars located in clusters and associations for which there are reliable distance estimates.
