Search

The analysis of eclipsing binaries with massive components enables to test stellar evolution models and track selected aspects of the structure of early-type stars. Stellar pairs with B-type components may serve to find tighter constraints on the mechanisms of convective core overshooting or masses ofβCephei-type stars. We present the results of an analysis of several eclipsing binaries – N Sco, LS CMa, andδVel – observed by BRITE-Constellation satellites and followed by a wide range of ground-based telescopes.

Binaries in double-lined spectroscopic systems provide a homogeneous set of stars. Differences of parameters, such as age or initial conditions, which otherwise would have strong impact on the stellar evolution, can be neglected. The observed differences are determined by the difference in stellar mass between the two components. The mass ratio can be determined with much higher accuracy than the actual stellar mass. In this work, we aim to study the eccentric binary system KIC9163796, whose two components are very close in mass and both are low-luminosity red-giant stars from four years of Kepler space photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy with Hermes. Mass and radius of the primary were determined through asteroseismology to be 1.39+/-0.06 Mo and 5.35+/-0.09 Ro, resp. From spectral disentangling the mass ratio was found to be 1.015+/-0.005 and that the secondary is ~600K hotter than the primary. Evolutionary models place both components, in the early and advanced stage of the first dredge-up event on the red-giant branch. From theoretical models of the primary, we derived the internal rotational gradient. From a grid of models, the measured difference in lithium abundance is compared with theoretical predictions. The surface rotation of the primary is determined from the Kepler light curve and resembles the orbital period within 10 days. The radial rotational gradient between the surface and core is found to be 6.9+2.0/-1.0. The agreement between the surface rotation with the seismic result indicates that the full convective envelope is rotating quasi-rigidly. The models of the lithium abundance are compatible with a rigid rotation in the radiative zone during the main sequence. Heartbeat stars are a relatively new class of eccentric ellipsoidal variable first discovered by Kepler. An overview of the current field is given with details of some of the interesting objects identified in our current Kepler sample of 135 heartbeats stars. Three objects that have recently been or are undergoing detailed study are described along with suggestions for further avenues of research. We conclude by discussing why heartbeat stars are an interesting new tool to study tidally induced pulsations and orbital dynamics.

Context. The unparalleled photometric data obtained by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope has led to improved understanding of red giant stars and binary stars. Seismology allows us to constrain the properties of red giants. In addition to eclipsing binaries, eccentric non-eclipsing binaries that exhibit ellipsoidal modulations have been detected with Kepler. Aims. We aim to study the properties of eccentric binary systems containing a red giant star and to derive the parameters of the primary giant component. Methods. We applied asteroseismic techniques to determine the masses and radii of the primary component of each system. For a selected target, light and radial velocity curve modelling techniques were applied to extract the parameters of the system and its primary component. Stellar evolution and its effects on the evolution of the binary system were studied from theoretical models. Results. The paper presents the asteroseismic analysis of 18 pulsating red giants in eccentric binary systems, for which masses and radii were constrained. The orbital periods of these systems range from 20 to 440 days. The results of our ongoing radial velocity monitoring programme with the Hermes spectrograph reveal an eccentricity range of e = 0.2 to 0.76. As a case study we present a detailed analysis of KIC 5006817, whose rich oscillation spectrum allows for detailed seismic analysis. From seismology we constrain the rotational period of the envelope to be at least 165 d, which is roughly twice the orbital period. The stellar core rotates 13 times faster than the surface. From the spectrum and radial velocities we expect that the Doppler beaming signal should have a maximum amplitude of 300 ppm in the light curve. Fixing the mass and radius to the asteroseismically determined values, we find from our binary modelling a value of the gravity darkening exponent that is significantly larger than expected. Through binary modelling, we determine the mass of the secondary component to be 0.29 ± 0.03 Mmiddot;. Conclusions. For KIC 5006817 we exclude pseudo-synchronous rotation of the red giant with the orbit. The comparison of the results from seismology and modelling of the light curve shows a possible alignment of the rotational and orbital axis at the 2σ level. High-mass binary stars are known to show an unexplained discrepancy between the dynamical masses of the individual components and those predicted by models. In this work, we study Sigma Scorpii, a double-lined spectroscopic binary system consisting of two B-type stars residing in an eccentric orbit. The more massive primary component is a Beta Cep-type pulsating variable star. Our analysis is based on a time-series of some 1000 high-resolution spectra collected with the CORALIE spectrograph in 2006, 2007, and 2008. We use two different approaches to determine the orbital parameters of the star; the spectral disentangling technique is used to separate the spectral contributions of the individual components in the composite spectra. The non-LTE based spectrum analysis of the disentangled spectra reveals two stars of similar spectral type and atmospheric chemical composition. Combined with the orbital inclination angle estimate found in the literature, our orbital elements allow a mass estimate of 14.7 +/- 4.5 and 9.5 +/- 2.9 solar mass for the primary and secondary component, respectively. The primary component is found to pulsate in three independent modes, of which two are identified as fundamental and second overtone radial modes, while the third is an l = 1 non-radial mode. Seismic modelling of the pulsating component refines stellar parameters to 13.5 +0.5/-1.4 and 8.7 +0.6/-1.2 solar mass, and delivers radii of 8.95 +0.43/-0.66 and 3.90 +0.58/-0.36 solar radii for the primary and secondary, respectively. HD 92024 (=V381 Car) is an SB1 eclipsing binary system with a $\beta$~Cephei star as primary component. We report on the progress of a combined photometric and spectroscopic investigation of this binary, being the only one of its kind known in the southern hemisphere. Pulsating components of spectroscopic binaries often introduce substantial line-profile variations in the spectra that hamper the determination of orbital radial-velocity amplitudes, and thus also of the stellar masses. Here, in order to minimise the bias from line-profile variations on the orbital RVs, we use selected matched-profile RV differences to derive the orbital parameters. The method is compared to straightforward cross-correlation with an averaged spectrum.

Recent ultra-high precision observations of eclipsing binaries, especially data acquired by the Kepler satellite, have made accurate light curve modelling increasingly challenging but also more rewarding. In this contribution, we discuss low-amplitude signals in light curves that can now be used to derive physical information about eclipsing binaries but that were unaccessible before the Kepler era. A notable example is the detection of Doppler beaming, which leads to an increase in flux when a star moves towards the satellite and a decrease in flux when it moves away. Similarly, Rpmer delays, or light travel time effects, also have to taken into account when modelling the supreme quality data that is now available. The detection of offsets between primary and secondary eclipse phases in binaries with extreme mass ratios, and the observation of Horner delays in the signals of pulsators in binary stars, have allowed us to determine the orbits of several binaries without the need for spectroscopy. A third example of a small-scale effect that has to be taken into account when modelling specific binary systems, are lensing effects. A new binary light curve modelling code, PHOEBE 2.0, that takes all these effect into account is currently being developed.

phoebe 2.0 is an open source framework bridging the gap between stellar observations and models. It allows to create and fit models simultaneously and consistently to a wide range of observational data such as photometry, spectroscopy, spectrapolarimetry, interferometry and astrometry. To reach the level of precision required by the newest generation of instruments such as Kepler , GAIA and the arrays of large telescopes, the code is set up to handle a wide range of phenomena such as multiplicity, rotation, pulsations and magnetic fields, and to model the involved physics to a new level.

Some close binary formation theories require the presence of a third body so that the binary orbit can shrink over time. Tidal friction and Kozai cycles transfer energy from the binary to its companion, resulting in a close inner binary and a wide third body orbit. Spectroscopy and imaging studies have found 40% of binaries with periods less than 10 days, and 96% with periods less than 3 days, have a wide tertiary companion. With recent advancements in large photometric surveys, we are now beginning to detect many of these triple systems by observing tertiary eclipses or through the effect they have on the eclipse timing variations (ETVs) of the inner-binary. In the sample of 2600 Kepler EBs, we have detected the possible presence of a third body in ∼20%, including several circumbinary planets. Some multiple systems are quite dynamical and feature disappearing and reappearing eclipses, apsidal motion, and large disruptions to the inner-binary. phoebe is a freely available binary modeling code which can dynamically model all of these systems, allowing us to better test formation theories and probe the physics of eclipsing binaries.

KIC 10661783 is an eclipsing binary that shows Delta Sct-like oscillations. More than 60 pulsation frequencies have been detected in its light curve as observed by the Kepler satellite. We want to determine the fundamental stellar and system parameters of the eclipsing binary as a precondition for asteroseismic modelling of the pulsating component and to establish whether the star is a semi-detached Algol-type system. We measured the radial velocities of both components from new high-resolution spectra using TODCOR and compute the orbit using PHOEBE. We used the KOREL program to decompose the observed spectra into its components, and analysed the decomposed spectra to determine the atmospheric parameters. For this, we developed a new computer program for the normalisation of the KOREL output spectra. Fundamental stellar parameters are determined by combining the spectroscopic results with those from the analysis of the Kepler light curve. We obtain Teff, logg, vsini, and the absolute masses and radii of the components, together with their flux ratio and separation. Whereas the secondary star rotates synchronously with the orbital motion, the primary star rotates subsynchronously by a factor of 0.75. The newly determined mass ratio of 0.0911 is higher than previously thought and means a detached configuration is required to fit the light curve. With its low orbital period and very low mass ratio, the system shows characteristics of the R CMa-type stars but differs from this group by being detached. Its current state is assumed to be that of a detached post-Algol binary system with a pulsating primary component., Comment: 13 pages, 8 tables, 17 figures

We report the discovery of low-amplitude gravity-mode oscillations in the massive binary star V380 Cyg, from 180 d of Kepler custom-aperture space photometry and 5 months of high-resolution high signal-to-noise spectroscopy. The new data are of unprecedented quality and allowed to improve the orbital and fundamental parameters for this binary. The orbital solution was subtracted from the photometric data and led to the detection of periodic intrinsic variability with frequencies of which some are multiples of the orbital frequency and others are not. Spectral disentangling allowed the detection of line-profile variability in the primary. With our discovery of intrinsic variability interpreted as gravity mode oscillations, V380 Cyg becomes an important laboratory for future seismic tuning of the near-core physics in massive B-type stars., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. We present Kepler satellite photometry of KIC 10661783, a short-period binary star system which shows total eclipses and multiperiodic δ Scuti pulsations. A frequency analysis of the eclipse-subtracted light curve reveals at least 68 frequencies, of which 55 or more can be attributed to pulsation modes. The main limitation on this analysis is the frequency resolution within the 27-d short-cadence light curve. Most of the variability signal lies in the frequency range 18–31 d−1, with amplitudes between 0.1 and 4 mmag. One harmonic term (2f) and a few combination frequencies (fi+fj) have been detected. From a plot of the residuals versus orbital phase, we assign the pulsations to the primary star in the system. The pulsations were removed from the short-cadence data and the light curve was modelled using the Wilson–Devinney code. We are unable to get a perfect fit due to the residual effects of pulsations and also to the treatment of reflection and reprocessing in the light-curve model. A model where the secondary star fills its Roche lobe is favoured, which means that KIC 10661783 can be classified as an oEA system. Further photometric and spectroscopic observations will allow the masses and radii of the two stars to be measured to high precision and hundreds of δ Scuti pulsation frequencies to be resolved. This could lead to unique constraints on theoretical models of δ Scuti stars, if the evolutionary history of KIC 10661783 can be accounted for.

While its contrast with respect to the main stellar locus is only about 1:2300, this previously unrecognized feature includes 863 stars from the SDSS Data Release 1 (DR1). The position and shape of the feature are in good agreement with predictions of a simple binary star model that consists of a white dwarf and an M dwarf, with the components' luminosity ratio controlling the position along this binary system locus. SDSS DR1 spectra for 47 of these objects strongly support this model. The absolute magnitude-color distribution inferred for the white dwarf component is in good agreement with the models of Bergeron et al.

Eclipse-mapping techniques are applied to the hyperactive Algol binary V367 Cyg. Our new computer code is in variation with Rutten's (1989) 3D approach which uses the complete light curve and not only the eclipse portion. The accretion disk image is reconstructed using a genetic algorithm. Disk brightness distribution has a two-arm pattern with highest intensities in the region where the stream from the mass-losing component impacts on the disk.

The complexity of composite spectra of close binary star system makes study of the spectra of their component stars extremely difficult. For this reason there exists very little information on the photospheric chemical composition of stars in close binaries, despite its importance for informing our understanding of the evolutionary processes of stars. In a long-term observational project we aim to fill this gap with systematic abundance studies for the variety of binary systems. The core of our analysis is the spectral disentangling technique, which allows isolation of the individual component star spectra from the time-series of observed spectra. We present new results for high-mass stars in close binaries. So far, we have measured detailed abundances for 22 stars in a dozen detached binary systems. The parameter space for the stars in our sample comprises masses in the range 8--22 M_sun, surface gravities of 3.1--4.2 (c.g.s.) and projected rotational velocities of 30--240 km/s. Whilst recent evolutionary models for rotating single stars predict changes in photospheric abundances even during the main sequence lifetime, no star in our sample shows signs of these predicted changes. The investigation of eclipsing spectroscopic binaries provides basic parameters of stars in a direct way. Whereas the measurable absolute masses can be used to calibrate stellar evolutionary scenarios, the effective temperatures derived from spectroscopic analysis are an important input to light curve and asteroseismic modelling. We compare different methods for investigating eclipsing SB2 stars focusing on radial velocity determination and spectrum decomposition and analysis. Used methods are the two-dimensional cross-correlation technique todcor, spectral disentangling with the Fourier transform-based korel program, and a grid search-based method of spectrum analysis using spectrum synthesis. The complete set of orbital elements of binary and multiple systems can be only determined from complementary observables. In spectral disentangling the orbital elements are optimised along with simultaneous determination of the individual spectra of components. Therefore, a posteriori combination with some other observables, i.e. astrometric measurements or historic RVs is principally incorrect. With advances in the instrumentation more and more binary and multiple systems are spatially and spectroscopically resolved which makes the solution of orbital elements more firm. Following this advances, we have developed a wrapper with optimisation routine which enables spectral disentangling of time-series of spectra with the constraints from interferometric (astrometric) measurements.
