Abstract

The“GAPS” (Global Architecture of Planetary Systems)projectgathersa large part of the Italian community working onexoplanets.One of our aims is thesearch for young exoplanets with HARPS-N and GIARPS at TNG, since they are the key targets to study the ongoing planet formation and to investigate the role played by the migration mechanisms, the formation sites and the orbit evolution on their observed diversity.Transit space missions are significantly contributing in our view of young planetary systems at close separations, providing robust candidates to be followed-up with the radial velocity (RV) technique. The Young Objects sub-program of GAPS2 searches for young planets by surveying members in young (e.g., Taurus, Cepheus) and intermediate age (e.g. Coma Ber, Hyades) associations, and perform an RV follow-up of young transiting candidates, mainly provided by the NASA-TESS satellite. For a proper treatment of the high level of the stellar activity, typical for these objects, we work to improve the RV extraction and exploit the Gaussian process regression modelling, supported by an intensive RV monitoring. I will review the first results of our survey, including the confirmation and the retraction of known planet candidates, the stellar parameters such as stellar age and membership to groups, chemical composition, magnetic activity and high-energy emission and their link to planet detectability and evaporation of the atmospheres.

Abstract

We report the detection and characterization of the new transiting extrasolar planet TOI-1710 b. It was first identified as a promising candidate by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Its planetary nature has been established from HARPS-N and SOPHIE spectroscopic observations via the radial velocity method. The stellar parameters for the host star are derived from the spectra and a joint Markov chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) adjustment of the spectral energy distribution and evolutionary tracks of TOI-1710. Performed in a combined MCMC and quasi-periodic Gaussian process method, a simultaneous analysis of the TESS light curve and the radial velocity evolution concomitantly allows us to determine the planetary properties and inspect the stellar magnetic activity jitter. TOI-1710 b is a massive warm Neptune (30.0 ± 5.7 M_Earth and 5.84 ± 0.30 R_Earth) orbiting a G5V dwarf star on a 24.3 days circular compatible orbit (e = 0.13 ± 0.09)., König, Pierre-Cécil, et al., A&A, in prep., {"references":["Foreman-Mackey, Daniel, et al. 3. PyExoRaMa: An Interactive Tool in Python to Investigate the Radius–Mass Diagram for Exoplanets

Abstract

We present the python version of the software originally developed with Mathematica by Zeng et al. The code represents a useful tool for visualizing and manipulating data related to extrasolar planets and their host stars in a multi-dimensional parameter space. Its versatility enables statistical studies based on the large and constantly increasing number of detected exoplanets. It can be used to identify possible interdependence among several physical parameters, and to compare observables with theoretical models describing the exoplanet composition and structure. Our transposition to python presents some new features with respect to the original version, and due to the popularity of this programming language in the astrophysics community, the tool is made accessible to a larger number of users interested in exoplanet studies.

Abstract

The effort for searching, studying and characterizing extrasolar planets and planetary systems is a growing and improving field of astrophysical research. Alongside the growing knowledge on the field, the data resources are also growing, both from observations and numerical simulations. To tackle interoperability of these data, an effort is starting (under the EU H2020 ASTERICS project) to delineate a data model to allow a common sharing of the datasets and collections of exoplanetary data. The data model will pick up model components from the IVOA specifications, either existing or under investigation, and attach new ones where needed. Here are presented the first results in drafting the exoplanetary systems dedicated data model. Relationships are reported with existing and proposed IVOA models; new key components not yet available in the interoperable scenario are shown. The results here reported cover a first set of requirements and considerations and take into account aspects like the observations of exoplanetary systems, the usage of existing exoplanets catalogues, the investigation of atmospheres of confirmed exoplanets and the simulation of exoplanet's atmospheres devoted to characterize exoplanets habitability.

Abstract

Thousands of exoplanets have now been discovered with a huge range of masses, sizes and orbits: from rocky Earth-like planets to large gas giants grazing the surface of their host star. However, the essential nature of these exoplanets remains largely mysterious: there is no known, discernible pattern linking the presence, size, or orbital parameters of a planet to the nature of its parent star. We have little idea whether the chemistry of a planet is linked to its formation environment, or whether the type of host star drives the physics and chemistry of the planet’s birth, and evolution. The Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey (ARIEL) has been selected by the European Space Agency as the next mediumclass science mission, M4, to address these scientific questions. ARIEL was conceived to observe a large number (~1000) of transiting planets for statistical understanding, including gas giants, Neptunes, super-Earths and Earth-size planets around a range of host star types using transit spectroscopy in the 1.25-7.8 μm spectral range and multiple narrow-band photometry in the optical. ARIEL will focus on warm and hot planets to take advantage of their well-mixed atmospheres which should show minimal condensation and sequestration of high-Z materials compared to their colder Solar System siblings. Said warm and hot atmospheres are expected to be more representative of the planetary bulk composition. Observations of these warm/hot exoplanets, and in particular of their elemental composition (especially C, O, N, S, Si), will allow the understanding of the early stages of planetary and atmospheric formation during the nebular phase and the following few million years. ARIEL will thus provide a representative picture of the chemical nature of the exoplanets and relate this directly to the type and chemical environment of the host star. ARIEL is designed as a dedicated survey mission for combined-light spectroscopy, capable of observing a large and well-defined planet sample within its 4-year mission lifetime. Transit, eclipse and phase-curve spectroscopy methods, whereby the signal from the star and planet are differentiated using knowledge of the planetary ephemerides, allow us to measure atmospheric signals from the planet at levels of 10-100 part per million (ppm) relative to the star and, given the bright nature of targets, also allows more sophisticated techniques, such as eclipse mapping, to give a deeper insight into the nature of the atmosphere. These types of observations require a stable payload and satellite platform with broad, instantaneous wavelength coverage to detect many molecular species, probe the thermal structure, identify clouds and monitor the stellar activity. The wavelength range proposed covers all the expected major atmospheric gases from e.g. H2O, CO2, CH4 NH3, HCN, H2S through to the more exotic metallic compounds, such as TiO, VO, and condensed species. Simulations of ARIEL performance in conducting exoplanet surveys have been performed – using conservative estimates of mission performance and a full model of all significant noise sources in the measurement – using a list of potential ARIEL targets that incorporates the latest available exoplanet statistics. The conclusion at the end of the Phase A study, is that ARIEL – in line with the stated mission objectives – will be able to observe about 1000 exoplanets depending on the details of the adopted survey strategy, thus confirming the feasibility of the main science objectives.

Abstract

We present an updated view of the rotation-activity-age relation for (old) field M dwarfs based on K2 rotation periods and flares,archival X-ray and UV data,and dedicated Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. The rotation-activity-age relation can be used as a proxy for magnetic fields-- which are difficult to measure in M dwarfs --and is, therefore, key to studies of(i) the predicted dynamo transition at the fully convective boundary(SpT~M3),(ii) differences in angular momentum loss through magnetized windswith respect to solar-type stars,and (iii) the evaporation of planet atmospheres,especially relevant for M dwarfs because ofthe small separation of their planets' habitable zones wherethey are strongly exposed to the stellar high-energy emission. We use a two-fold approach to obtain tight observational constraints:(1) In our study of the activity-rotation relation of nearby,proper-motion selected M dwarfs using photometric time-series from theK2 mission combined with X-ray and UV data we find strong evidencefor an abrupt change of optical photometric activity (flares, rotationcycle amplitude and residual variability)at P_rot~10d, and an unexpectedly steep decline ofX-ray activity in the unsaturated regime of slow rotators.(2) The age-activity relation is investigated through deep X-ray observationsof a sample of M dwarfs in wide binaries with white dwarfs. Here thewhite dwarf serves as a chronometer for the age of the M dwarf. Our results provide important input foraccurate angular momentum evolution models and planet atmosphere escapecalculations for M dwarfs.&nbsp

Abstract

This work describes the most relevant steps undertaken for the development and installation of the survey APACHE (A PAthway toward the Characterization of Habitable Earths), and some of the main results obtained after the first observing season are presented. APACHE is the first long-term observing campaign based in Europe which is devised expressly for detecting extrasolar planets orbiting well selected, nearby M dwarfs by using the photometric transit method. The project was conceived at the end of 2008 and he survey makes use of an array of five automated 40 cm telescopes which started routine observations between July 2012 and March 2013. In the Thesis introduction some key issues are discussed which in the last years have placed the cool stars at the centre of the planet hunters’ interests, producing an increase in the number of photometric and high resolution spectroscopic surveys targeted on red dwarfs. In Chapters 1 and 2 the milestones which led to the preparation and initial design of APACHE are presented (the feasibility and pilot study), while Chapter 3 is focused on the description of the most relevant characteristics of the survey structure, as the accurate definition of the catalogue of eligible targets (the APACHE Input Catalogue) and observing strategy, and the implementation of the software package used for obtaining and analyzing the light curves. In Chapter 4 the preliminary results obtained after the first observing season at regime are presented and discussed, with the analysis mainly focused on the study of the photometric variability of more than 130 M dwarfs. Three targets showed evidence of stellar flares, and rotation periods have been measured for five stars through the analysis of their light curve periodograms. A simple single-spot model has been applied to the time series of these stars to describe the observed sinusoidal-like modulation in terms of stellar spots/active regions, obtaining in particular an estimate of the spin-axis inclination angle relative to the line of sight. The Chapter ends with a presentation of more than 90 new variable stars discovered in the stellar fields observed by the APACHE telescopes during the first year. The Thesis concludes with Chapter 5, where the strategic synergy established between APACHE and the large National observing programme GAPS (Global Architecture of Planetary Systems) is described. GAPS observations are carried out with the high resolution spectrograph HARPS-N at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG, @ La Palma island in the Canary archipelago) for an extensive study in the field of extrasolar planets. Among the goals of GAPS, of particular relevance is the detection of planets orbiting M dwarfs by analyzing the time variations of the stellar radial velocities, and in Chapter 5 preliminary results are presented for a sample of targets in common with the APACHE project. In particular, it is highlighted the importance of having photometric light curves as a support for a correct interpretation of periodical signals found in the radial velocity time series which could be due to the gravitational effects induced on the star by a planetary mass companion. The results discussed in this Thesis should demonstrate how effectively a large photometric database such that of APACHE is expected to contribute to both the exoplanet science and the physics of the cool stars

Abstract

We present four new light curves of transiting exoplanets WASP-1b and HAT-P-20b, observed within the TASTE (The Asiago Search for Transit timing variations of Exoplanets) project. We re-analyzed light curves from the literature in a homogeneous way, calculating a refined ephemeris and orbital-physical parameters for both objects. WASP-1b does not show any significant Transit Timing Variation signal at the 120 s-level. As for HAT-P-20b, we detected a deviation from our re-estimated linear ephemeris that could be ascribed to the presence of a perturber or, more probably, to a previously unnoticed high level of stellar activity. The rotational period of HAT-P-20 A we obtained from archival data (P_rot ~ 14.5 days), combined with its optical variability and strong emission of CaII H&K lines, is consistent with a young stellar age (< 1 Gyr) and support the hypothesis that stellar activity may be responsible of the measured deviations of the transit times., 7 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted to Astronomische Nachrichten

Abstract

In the context of the ESA M5 (medium mission) call we proposed a new satellite mission, Theia, based on relative astrometry and extreme precision to study the motion of very faint objects in the Universe. Theia is primarily designed to study the local dark matter properties, the existence of Earth-like exoplanets in our nearest star systems and the physics of compact objects. Furthermore, about 15 $\%$ of the mission time was dedicated to an open observatory for the wider community to propose complementary science cases. With its unique metrology system and "point and stare" strategy, Theia's precision would have reached the sub micro-arcsecond level. This is about 1000 times better than ESA/Gaia's accuracy for the brightest objects and represents a factor 10-30 improvement for the faintest stars (depending on the exact observational program). In the version submitted to ESA, we proposed an optical (350-1000nm) on-axis TMA telescope. Due to ESA Technology readiness level, the camera's focal plane would have been made of CCD detectors but we anticipated an upgrade with CMOS detectors. Abstract

We carry out a comparative analysis of the performance of three algorithms widely used to identify significant periodicities in radial-velocity (RV) datasets: the Generalised Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (GLS), its modified version based on Bayesian statistics (BGLS), and the multi-frequency periodogram scheme called FREquency DEComposer (FREDEC). We apply the algorithms to a suite of numerical simulations of (single and multiple) low-amplitude Keplerian RV signals induced by low-mass companions around M-dwarf primaries. The global performance of the three period search approaches is quite similar in the limit of an idealized, best-case scenario (single planets, circular orbits, white noise). However, GLS, BGLS and FREDEC are not equivalent when it comes to the correct identification of more complex signals (including correlated noise of stellar origin, eccentric orbits, multiple planets), with variable degrees of efficiency loss as a function of system parameters and degradation in completeness and reliability levels. The largest discrepancy is recorded in the number of false detections: the standard approach of residual analyses adopted for GLS and BGLS translates in large fractions of false alarms ($\sim30\%$) in the case of multiple systems, as opposed to $\sim10\%$ for the FREDEC approach of simultaneous multi-frequency search. Our results reinforce the need for the strengthening and further development of the most aggressive and effective {\it ab initio} strategies for the robust identification of low-amplitude planetary signals in RV datasets, particularly now that RV surveys are beginning to achieve sensitivity to potentially habitable Earth-mass planets around late-type stars., 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
