We present a machine learning model to classify active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxies (AGN-galaxy classifier) and a model to identify type 1 (optically unabsorbed) and type 2 (optically absorbed) AGN (type 1/2 classifier). We test tree-based algorithms, using training samples built from the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission–Newton (XMM–Newton) catalogue and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), with labels derived from the SDSS survey. The performance was tested making use of simulations and of cross-validation techniques. With a set of features including spectroscopic redshifts and X-ray parameters connected to source properties (e.g. fluxes and extension), as well as features related to X-ray instrumental conditions, the precision and recall for AGN identification are 94 and 93 per cent, while the type 1/2 classifier has a precision of 74 per cent and a recall of 80 per cent for type 2 AGNs. The performance obtained with photometric redshifts is very similar to that achieved with spectroscopic redshifts in both test cases, while there is a decrease in performance when excluding redshifts. Our machine learning model trained on X-ray features can accurately identify AGN in extragalactic surveys. A late (t $\sim$ 1,500 days) multi-wavelength (UV, optical, IR, and X-ray) flare was found in PS1-10adi, a tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate that took place in an active galactic nucleus (AGN). TDEs usually involve super-Eddington accretion, which drives fast mass outflow (disk wind). So here we explore a possible scenario that such a flare might be produced by the interaction of the disk wind with a dusty torus for TDEs in AGN. Due to the high velocity of the disk wind, strong shocks will emerge and convert the bulk of the kinetic energy of the disk wind to radiation. We calculate the dynamics and then predict the associated radiation signatures, taking into account the widths of the wind and torus. We compare our model with the bolometric light curve of the late flare in PS1-10adi constructed from observations. We find from our modeling that the disk wind has a total kinetic energy of about $10^{51}$ erg and a velocity of 0.1 c (i.e., a mass of 0.3 $M_{\odot}$); the gas number density of the clouds in the torus is $3\times 10^{7}$ $\rm cm^{-3}$. Observation of such a late flare can be an evidence of the disk wind in TDEs and can be used as a tool to explore the nuclear environment of the host., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. We use a sample of $z=0$ galaxies visually classified as slow rotators (SRs) in the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulations to explore the effect of galaxy mergers on their formation, characterise their intrinsic galaxy properties, and study the connection between quenching and kinematic transformation. SRs that have had major or minor mergers (mass ratios $\ge 0.3$ and $0.1-0.3$, respectively) tend to have a higher triaxiality parameter and ex-situ stellar fractions than those that had exclusively very minor mergers or formed in the absence of mergers ("no-merger" SRs). No-merger SRs are more compact, have lower black hole-to-stellar mass ratios and quenched later than other SRs, leaving imprints on their $z=0$ chemical composition. For the vast majority of SRs we find that quenching, driven by active galactic nuclei feedback, precedes kinematic transformation, except for satellite SRs, in which these processes happen in tandem. However, in $\approx 50$\% of these satellites, satellite-satellite mergers are responsible for their SR fate, while environment (i.e. tidal field and interactions with the central) can account for the transformation in the rest. By splitting SRs into kinematic sub-classes, we find that flat SRs prefer major mergers; round SRs prefer minor or very minor mergers; prolate SRs prefer gas-poor mergers. Flat and prolate SRs are more common among satellites hosted by massive halos ($>10^{13.6}\,\rm M_{\odot}$) and centrals of high masses ($M_{\star} > 10^{10.5}\, \rm M_{\odot}$). Although EAGLE galaxies display kinematic properties that broadly agree with observations, there are areas of disagreement, such as inverted stellar age and velocity dispersion profiles. The physical properties of the accretion flow and of the X-ray emitting plasma, in supermassive black holes accreting at extreme Eddington rates, are still very unclear. Here we present the analysis of simultaneous XMM–Newton and NuSTAR observations of the hyper-Eddington Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 04416+1215, carried out in 2020. The main goal of these observations is to investigate the properties of the X-ray corona, as well as the structure of the accretion flow and of the circumnuclear environment, in this regime of extreme accretion. IRAS 04416+1215 has one of the highest Eddington ratio (λEdd ≃ 472) in the local Universe. It shows an interesting spectral shape, very similar to the standard narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy’s spectra, with the presence of multiphase absorption structure composed of three phases, whose estimate of the minimum and maximum distances suggests two different interpretations, one consistent with the three X-ray winds being cospatial, and possibly driven by magnetohydrodynamical processes, the other consistent with the multiphase winds being also multiscale. The X-ray spectrum of IRAS 04416+1215 also has a prominent soft excess component and a hard X-ray emission dominated by a reflection component. Moreover, our detailed spectral analysis shows that IRAS 04416+1215 has the lowest coronal temperature measured so far by NuSTAR (kTe = 3–22 keV, depending on the model). This is consistent with a hybrid coronal plasma, in which the primary continuum emission is driven by pair production due to high-energy tail of the energy distribution of non-thermal electrons.

Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) have been detected in the high-quality X-ray spectra of a number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with fairly high accretion rates and are thought to significantly contribute to the AGN feedback. After a decade of dedicated study, their launching mechanisms and structure are still not well understood, but variability techniques may provide useful constraints. In this work, therefore, we perform a flux-resolved X-ray spectroscopy on a highly accreting and variable NLS1 AGN, 1H 0707-495, using all archival XMM-Newton observations to study the structure of the UFO. We find that the wind spectral lines weaken at higher luminosities, most likely due to an increasing ionization parameter as previously found in a few similar sources. Instead, the velocity is anticorrelated with the luminosity, which is opposite to the trend observed in the NLS1 IRAS 13224-3809. Furthermore, the detection of the emission lines, which are not observed in IRAS 13224-3809, indicates a wind with a larger opening angle in 1H 0707-495, presumably due to a higher accretion rate. The emitting gas is found to remain broadly constant with the luminosity. We describe the variability of the wind with a scenario where the strong radiation extends the launch radius outwards and shields the outer emitting gas, similarly to super-Eddington compact objects, although other possible explanations are discussed. We study the population of active galaxies in void environment in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We use optical spectroscopic information to analyse characteristics of the emission lines of galaxies, accomplished by WHAN and BPT diagrams. Also, we study Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer(WISE) mid-IR colours to assess active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity. We investigate these different AGN classification schemes, both optical and mid-IR, and their dependence on the spatial location with respect to the void centres. To this end, we define three regions: void, the spherical region defined by voidcentric distance relative to void radius (distance/rvoid) smaller than 0.8, comprising overdensities lesser than −0.9, an intermediate/transition shell region (namely, void-wall) 0.8 < distance/rvoid < 1.2, and a region sufficiently distant from voids, the field: distance/rvoid > 2. We find statistical evidence for a larger fraction of AGN and star-forming galaxies in the void region, regardless of the classification scheme addressed (either BPT, WHAN, or WISE). Moreover, we obtain a significantly stronger nuclear activity in voids compared to the field. We find an unusually large fraction of the most massive black holes undergoing strong accretion when their host galaxies reside in voids. Our results suggest a strong influence of the void environment on AGN mechanisms associated with galaxy evolution.

Active galactic nucleus (AGN) emission is dominated by stochastic, aperiodic variability which overwhelms any periodic/quasi-periodic signal (QPO) if one is present. The Auto Correlation Function (ACF) and Phase Dispersion Minimization (PDM) techniques have been used previously to claim detections of QPOs in AGN light curves. In this paper we perform Monte Carlo simulations to empirically test QPO detection feasibility in the presence of red noise. Given the community's access to large databases of monitoring light curves via large-area monitoring programmes, our goal is to provide guidance to those searching for QPOs via data trawls. We simulate evenly-sampled pure red noise light curves to estimate false alarm probabilities; false positives in both tools tend to occur towards timescales longer than (very roughly) one-third of the light curve duration. We simulate QPOs mixed with pure red noise and determine the true-positive detection sensitivity; in both tools, it depends strongly on the relative strength of the QPO against the red noise and on the steepness of the red noise PSD slope. We find that extremely large values of peak QPO power relative to red noise (typically $\sim 10^{4-5}$) are needed for a 99.7 per cent true-positive detection rate. Given that the true-positive detections using the ACF or PDM are generally rare to obtain, we conclude that period searches based on the ACF or PDM must be treated with extreme caution when the data quality is not good. We report the discovery of [NeV]3426 emission, in addition to HeII4686 emission, in six compact star-forming galaxies. These observations considerably increase the sample of eight such galaxies discovered earlier by our group. For four of the new galaxies, the optical observations are supplemented by near-infrared spectra. All galaxies, but one, have HII regions that are dense, with electron number densities of ~300-700 cm-3. They are all characterised by high Hbeta equivalent widths EW(Hbeta)~190-520A and high O32=[OIII]5007/[OII]3727 ratios of 10-30, indicating young starburst ages and the presence of high ionization radiation. All are low-metallicity objects with 12+logO/H=7.46-7.88. The spectra of all galaxies show a low-intensity broad component of the Halpha line and five out of six objects show Wolf-Rayet features. Comparison with photoionization models shows that pure stellar ionization radiation from massive stars is not hard enough to produce such strong [NeV] and HeII emission in our galaxies. The [NeV]3426/HeII4686 flux ratio of ~1.2 in J1222+3602 is consistent with some contribution of active galactic nucleus ionizing radiation. An empirical model is presented that links the demographics of AGN to their ensemble X-ray variability properties. Observations on the incidence of AGN in galaxies are combined with (i) models of the Power Spectrum Density (PSD) of the flux variations of AGN and (ii) parameterisations of the black-hole mass vs stellar-mass scaling relation, to predict the mean excess variance of active black-hole populations in cosmological volumes. We show that the comparison of the model with observational measurements of the ensemble excess variance as a function of X-ray luminosity provides a handle on both the PSD models and the black-hole mass vs stellar mass relation. We find strong evidence against a PSD model that is described by a broken power-law and a constant overall normalisation. Instead our analysis indicates that the amplitude of the PSD depends on the physical properties of the accretion events, such as the Eddington ratio and/or the black hole mass. We also find that current observational measurements of the ensemble excess variance are consistent with the black-hole mass vs stellar mass relation of local spheroids based on dynamically determined black-hole masses. We also discuss future prospects of the proposed approach to jointly constrain the PSD of AGN and the black-hole mass vs stellar mass relation as a function of redshift. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) forming in the early universe are thought to be the primary source of hard ionizing photons contributing to the reionization of intergalactic helium. However, the number density and spectral properties of high-redshift AGN remain largely unconstrained. In this work, we make use of physically-informed models calibrated with a wide variety of available observations to provide estimates for the role of AGN throughout the Epoch of Reionization. We present AGN luminosity functions in various bands between z = 2 to 7 predicted by the well-established Santa Cruz semi-analytic model, which includes modelling of black hole accretion and AGN feedback. We then combine the predicted AGN populations with a physical spectral model for self-consistent estimates of ionizing photon production rates, which depend on the mass and accretion rate of the accreting supermassive black hole. We then couple the predicted comoving ionizing emissivity with an analytic model to compute the subsequent reionization history of intergalactic helium and hydrogen. This work demonstrates the potential of coupling physically motivated analytic or semi-analytic techniques to capture multi-scale physical processes across a vast range of scales (here, from AGN accretion disks to cosmological scales). Our physical model predicts an intrinsic ionizing photon budget well above many of the estimates in the literature, meaning that helium reionization can comfortably be accomplished even with a relatively low escape fraction. Massive black holes (MBHs) inhabit galaxy centers, power luminous quasars and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and shape their cosmic environment with the energy they produce. The origins of MBHs remain a mystery and the recent detection by LIGO/Virgo of an almost 150 solar mass black hole has revitalized the question of whether there is a continuum between "stellar" and "massive" black holes and what the seeds of MBHs are. Seeds could have formed in the first galaxies, or could be also related to the collapse of horizon-sized regions in the early Universe. Understanding the origins of MBHs straddles fundamental physics, cosmology and astrophysics and it bridges the fields of gravitational wave physics and traditional astronomy. With several facilities in the next 10-15 years we foresee the possibility of discovering MBHs' avenues of formation. In this article we link three main topics: the channels of black hole seed formation, the journey from seeds to massive black holes, the diagnostics on the origins of MBHs. The effect of radiation pressure compression (RPC) on ionized gas in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) likely sets the photoionized gas density structure. The photoionized gas free-free absorption and emission are therefore uniquely set by the incident ionizing flux. We use the photoionization code Cloudy RPC model results to derive the expected relations between the free-free emission and absorption properties and the distance from the AGN centre, for a given AGN luminosity. The free-free absorption frequency of RPC gas is predicted to increases from $\sim$100 MHz on the kpc scale, to $\sim$100 GHz on the sub-pc scale, consistent with observations of spatially resolved free-free absorption. The free-free emission at 5 GHz is predicted to yield a radio loudness of $R\sim 0.03$, below the typical observed values of $R\sim 0.1-1$ in radio-quiet AGN. However, the flat free-free radio continuum may become dominant above 100 GHz. The suggested detection of optically thin free-free emission in NGC 1068, on the sub pc torus scale, is excluded as the brightness temperature is too high for optically thin free-free emission. However, excess emission observed with ALMA above 150 GHz in NGC 1068, is consistent with the predicted free-free emission from gas just outside the broad line region, a region which overlaps the hot dust disc resolved with GRAVITY. Extended $\sim$100 pc scale free-free emission is also likely present in NGC 1068. Future sub mm observation of radio quiet AGN with ALMA may allow to image the free-free emission of warm photoionized gas in AGN down to the 30 mas scale, including highly absorbed AGN., 18 pages, 13 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The co-evolution between central supermassive black holes (BH), their host galaxies, and dark matter halos is still a matter of intense debate. Present theoretical models suffer from large uncertainties and degeneracies, for example, between the fraction of accreting sources and their characteristic accretion rate. In recent work we showed that Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) clustering represents a powerful tool to break degeneracies when analysed in terms of mean BH mass, and that AGN bias at fixed stellar mass is largely independent of most of the input parameters, such as the AGN duty cycle and the mean scaling between BH mass and host galaxy stellar mass. In this paper we take advantage of our improved semi-empirical methodology and recent clustering data derived from large AGN samples at $z \sim 1.2$, demonstrate that the AGN bias as a function of host galaxy stellar mass is a crucial diagnostic of the BH--galaxy connection, and is highly dependent on the scatter around the BH mass--galaxy mass scaling relation and on the relative fraction of satellite and central active BHs. Current data at $z \sim 1.2$ favour relatively high values of AGN in satellites, pointing to a major role of disc instabilities in triggering AGN, unless a high minimum host halo mass is assumed. The data are not decisive on the magnitude/covariance of the BH-galaxy scatter at $z \sim 1.2$ and intermediate host masses $M_\mathrm{star} \lesssim 10^{11} \,\mathrm{M}_\odot$. A general catalog of active galactic nuclei (AGN) has been created from identified optical sources of X-ray data from the Hamburg-ROSAT Catalog (HRC) and the Byurakan-Hamburg ROSAT Catalog (BHRC). Optical and multiwavelength data from both catalogs have been examined in order to eliminate erroneous AGN and add new ones. The result is a new catalog of 4253 AGN with X-ray emission (ROSAT BSC/FSC). All of these sources are either AGN or have been classified as candidates. All the multiwave data (gamma, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio) have been retrieved for these objects using new catalogs and statistical studies have been made. Attempts have been made to find the relation between the radiative fluxes in different ranges for various types of sources and to determine their characteristics, thereby confirming their membership as AGN. The X-ray properties of these sources have been analyzed in order to find the boundary between normal galaxies and X-ray AGN, and an attempt has been made to find hidden AGN.

Cosmological shock waves are ubiquitous to cosmic structure formation and evolution. As a consequence, they play a major role in the energy distribution and thermalization of the intergalactic medium (IGM). We analyze the Mach number distribution in the Dianoga simulations of galaxy clusters performed with the SPH code GADGET-3. The simulations include the effects of radiative cooling, star formation, metal enrichment, supernova and active galactic nuclei feedback. A grid-based shock-finding algorithm is applied in post-processing to the outputs of the simulations. This procedure allows us to explore in detail the distribution of shocked cells and their strengths as a function of cluster mass, redshift and baryonic physics. We also pay special attention to the connection between shock waves and the cool-core/non-cool core (CC/NCC) state and the global dynamical status of the simulated clusters. In terms of general shock statistics, we obtain a broad agreement with previous works, with weak (low-Mach number) shocks filling most of the volume and processing most of the total thermal energy flux. As a function of cluster mass, we find that massive clusters seem more efficient in thermalising the IGM and tend to show larger external accretion shocks than less massive systems. We do not find any relevant difference between CC and NCC clusters. However, we find a mild dependence of the radial distribution of the shock Mach number on the cluster dynamical state, with disturbed systems showing stronger shocks than regular ones throughout the cluster volume., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

How does the environment affect active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity? We investigated this question in an extinction-free way, by selecting 1120 infrared galaxies in the $AKARI$ North Ecliptic Pole Wide field at redshift $z$ $\leq$ 1.2. A unique feature of the $AKARI$ satellite is its continuous 9-band infrared (IR) filter coverage, providing us with an unprecedentedly large sample of IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies. By taking advantage of this, for the first time, we explored the AGN activity derived from SED modelling as a function of redshift, luminosity, and environment. We quantified AGN activity in two ways: AGN contribution fraction (ratio of AGN luminosity to the total IR luminosity), and AGN number fraction (ratio of number of AGNs to the total galaxy sample). We found that galaxy environment (normalised local density) does not greatly affect either definitions of AGN activity of our IRG/LIRG samples (log ${\rm L}_{\rm TIR}$ $\leq$ 12). However, we found a different behavior for ULIRGs (log ${\rm L}_{\rm TIR}$ $>$ 12). At our highest redshift bin (0.7 $\lesssim$ z $\lesssim$ 1.2), AGN activity increases with denser environments, but at the intermediate redshift bin (0.3 $\lesssim$ z $\lesssim$ 0.7), the opposite is observed. These results may hint at a different physical mechanism for ULIRGs. The trends are not statistically significant (p $\geq$ 0.060 at the intermediate redshift bin, and p $\geq$ 0.139 at the highest redshift bin). Jets of high-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be used to directly probe the activity of the black holes in the early Universe. Radio sources with jets misaligned with respect to the line of sight are expected to dominate the high-redshift AGN population. In this paper, we present the high-resolution imaging results of a z=4.57 AGN J2102+6015 by analyzing its multi-epoch dual-frequency very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data. The 8.4-GHz VLBI images reveal two major features along the east-west direction separated by $\sim$ 10 milli-arcsec (mas). From the spectral index map, both features show flat/inverted spectra. The separation between the two features remains almost unchanged over an observation period of $\sim$ 13 years, placing an upper limit of the separation speed as about 0.04 mas year$^{-1}$. Previous studies have classified the source as a GHz-peaked spectrum quasar. Our results indicate that J2102+6015 is most likely a young, compact symmetric object rather than a blazar-type core-jet source., 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of a galaxy at z ≃ 4.88 that is, by chance, magnified ∼30× by gravitational lensing. Only three sources at z ≳ 5 are known with such high magnification. This particular source has been shown to exhibit widespread, high equivalent width ${{\rm C\, \small {IV}}}\ \lambda 1549\, \mathring{\rm A}$ emission, implying it is a unique example of a metal-poor galaxy with a hard radiation field, likely representing the galaxy population responsible for cosmic reionization. Using ultraviolet (UV) nebular line ratio diagnostics, Very Large Telescope (VLT)/X-shooter observations rule out strong active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity, indicating a stellar origin of the hard radiation field instead. We present a new detection of ${[{\rm Ne\, \small {III}}]}\ \lambda 3870\, \mathring{\rm A}$ and use the [${\rm Ne\, \small {III}}$]/[${\rm O\, \small {II}}$] line ratio to constrain the ionization parameter and gas-phase metallicity. Closely related to the commonly used [${\rm O\, \small {III}}$]/[${\rm O\, \small {II}}$] ratio, our [${\rm Ne\, \small {III}}$]/[${\rm O\, \small {II}}$] measurement shows this source is similar to local ‘Green Pea’ galaxies and Lyman-continuum leakers. It furthermore suggests this galaxy is more metal poor than expected from the fundamental metallicity relation, possibly as a consequence of excess gas accretion diluting the metallicity. Finally, we present the highest redshift detection of ${{\rm Mg\, \small {II}}}\ \lambda 2796\, \mathring{\rm A}$, observed at high equivalent width in emission, in contrast to more evolved systems predominantly exhibiting ${\rm Mg\, \small {II}}$ absorption. Strong ${\rm Mg\, \small {II}}$ emission has been observed in most z ∼ 0 Lyman-continuum leakers known and has recently been proposed as an indirect tracer of escaping ionizing radiation. In conclusion, this strongly lensed galaxy, observed just $300\, \mathrm{Myr}$ after reionization ends, enables testing of observational diagnostics proposed to constrain the physical properties of distant galaxies in the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)/Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) era.

For most of their lifetime, super-massive black holes (SMBHs) commonly found in galactic nuclei obtain mass from the ambient at a rate well below the Eddington limit, which is mediated by a radiatively inefficient, hot accretion flow. Both theory and numerical simulations predict that a strong wind must exist in such hot accretion flows. The wind is of special interest not only because it is an indispensable ingredient of accretion, but perhaps more importantly, it is believed to play a crucial role in the evolution of the host galaxy via the so-called kinetic mode AGN feedback. Observational evidence for this wind, however, remains scarce and indirect. Here we report the detection of a hot outflow from the low-luminosity active galactic nucleus in M81, based on {\it Chandra} high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. The outflow is evidenced by a pair of Fe XXVI Ly$\alpha$ lines redshifted and blueshifted at a bulk line-of-sight velocity of $\pm2.8\times10^3 \rm~km~s^{-1}$ and a high Fe XXVI Ly$\alpha$-to-Fe XXV K$\alpha$ line ratio implying a plasma temperature of $1.3\times10^8$ Kelvin. This high-velocity, hot plasma cannot be produced by stellar activity or the accretion inflow onto the SMBH. Our magnetohydrodynamical simulations show, instead, it is naturally explained by a wind from the hot accretion flow, propagating out to $\gtrsim10^6$ times the gravitational radius of the SMBH. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are prominent environments for stellar capture, growth and formation. These environments may catalyze stellar mergers and explosive transients, such as thermonuclear and core-collapse supernovae (SNe). SN explosions in AGN discs generate strong shocks, leading to unique observable signatures. We develop an analytical model which follows the evolution of the shock propagating in the disc until it eventually breaks out. We derive the peak luminosity, bolometric lightcurve, and breakout time. The peak luminosities may exceed $10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and last from hours to days. The brightest explosions occur in regions of reduced density; either off-plane, or in discs around low-mass central black holes ($\sim 10^6\ M_\odot$), or in starved subluminous AGNs. Explosions in the latter two sites are easier to observe due to a reduced AGN background luminosity. We perform suites of 1D Lagrangian radiative hydrodynamics SNEC code simulations to validate our results and obtain the luminosity in different bands, and 2D axisymmetric Eulerian hydrodynamics code HORMONE simulations to study the morphology of the ejecta and its deviation from spherical symmetry. The observed signature is expected to be a bright blue, UV, or X-ray flare on top of the AGN luminosity from the initial shock breakout, while the subsequent red part of the lightcurve will largely be unobservable. We estimate the upper limit for the total event rate to be $\mathcal{R}\lesssim 100\ \rm yr^{-1}\ Gpc^{-3}$ for optimal conditions and discuss the large uncertainties in this estimate. We present new H$\alpha$ photometry for the Star-Formation Reference Survey (SFRS), a representative sample of star-forming galaxies in the local Universe. Combining these data with the panchromatic coverage of the SFRS, we provide calibrations of H$\alpha$-based star-formation rates (SFRs) with and without correction for the contribution of [$\rm N_{^{II}}$] emission. We consider the effect of extinction corrections based on the Balmer decrement, infrared excess (IRX), and spectral energy distribution (SED) fits. We compare the SFR estimates derived from SED fits, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hybrid indicators such as 24 $\mu$m + H$\alpha$, 8 $\mu$m + H$\alpha$, FIR + FUV, and H$\alpha$ emission for a sample of purely star-forming galaxies. We provide a new calibration for 1.4 GHz-based SFRs by comparing to the H$\alpha$ emission, and we measure a dependence of the radio-to-H$\alpha$ emission ratio based on galaxy stellar mass. Active galactic nuclei introduce biases in the calibrations of different SFR indicators but have only a minimal effect on the inferred SFR densities from galaxy surveys. Recent observations reveal that, at a given stellar mass, blue galaxies tend to live in haloes with lower mass, while red galaxies live in more massive host haloes. The physical driver behind this is still unclear because theoretical models predict that, at the same halo mass, galaxies with high stellar masses tend to live in early-formed haloes, which naively leads to the opposite trend. Here, we show that the Simba simulation quantitatively reproduces the colour bimodality in the stellar-to-halo mass relation and reveals an inverse relationship between halo formation time and galaxy transition time. It suggests that the origin of this bimodality is rooted in the intrinsic variations of the cold gas content due to halo assembly bias. Simba’s stellar-to-halo mass bimodality quantitatively relies on two aspects of its input physics: (1) jet-mode feedback from active galactic nuclei, which quenches galaxies and sets the qualitative trend, and (2) X-ray feedback from active galactic nuclei, which fully quenches galaxies and yields better agreement with observations. The interplay between the growth of cold gas and the quenching from active galactic nuclei in Simba results in the observed stellar-to-halo mass bimodality. A sophisticated suite of cosmological simulations shows that the interplay between the growth of cold gas, which intrinsically varies due to halo assembly bias, and the feedback from active galactic nuclei can explain the observed bimodality in the colours of galaxies as a function of their halo mass.

We report the complex radio properties of the radio galaxy NGC 2329 that resides in the centre of the galaxy cluster Abell 569. For this study, we have used archival data from the Very Large Array (VLA) at various resolutions and frequencies, as well as the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). While the wide-angle tailed (WAT) Fanaroff-Riley type I (FR I) radio morphology of the source has been discussed widely in the literature, the nature of the inner lobes has not been as widely discussed. In particular, we note that the inner lobes resemble the bubble-like radio structures observed in Seyfert galaxies. Polarization-sensitive data from the VLA clearly show magnetic field structures consistent with FR Is for the outer lobes and Seyferts for the inner lobes in NGC 2329. FR Is are classified as radio-loud (RL) active galactic nuclei (AGN) and Seyferts as radio-quiet (RQ) AGN, making this source unique. The VLBA shows a one-sided radio jet suggesting a relativistic pc-scale outflow, leading into the inner lobes. Electron lifetime estimates suggest that the outer FR I-like lobes are nearly twice as old ($\sim$45 Myr) as the inner Seyfert-like lobes ($\sim$25 Myr). Gas inflow in this merging cluster seems to have rejuvenated the AGN about $\sim$25 Myr ago, and may have caused a change in the accretion disc state. The complex composite radio morphology of NGC 2329 suggests that the RL/RQ dichotomy is a function of time in the lifecycle of an AGN., 12 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. The scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) - is the oldest method of optical 3D spectroscopy. It is still in use because of the high spectral resolution it provides over a large field of view. The history of the application of this method for the study of extended ob jects (nebulae and galaxies) and the technique of data reduction and analysis are discussed. The paper focuses on the performing observations with the scanning FPI on the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS). The instrument is currently used as a part of the SCORPIO-2 multimode focal reducer. The results of studies of various galactic and extragalactic objects with the scanning FPI on the 6-m telescope - star-forming regions and young stellar objects, spiral, ring, dwarf and interacting galaxies, ionization cones of active galactic nuclei, galactic winds, etc. are briefly discussed. A parsec-scale dusty torus is thought to be the cause of active galactic nuclei (AGN) dichotomy in the 1/2 types, narrow/broad emission lines. In a previous work, on the basis of parsec-scale resolution infrared/optical dust maps, it was found that dust filaments, few parsecs wide and several hundred parsecs long, were ubiquitous features crossing the centre of type 2 AGN, their optical thickness being sufficient to fully obscure the optical nucleus. This work presents the complementary view for type 1 and intermediate-type AGN. The same type of narrow, collimated, dust filaments are equally found at the centre of these AGN. The difference now resides in their location with respect to the nucleus, next to it but not crossing it, as it is the case in type 2, and their reduced optical thickness towards the centre, AV≲1.5mag⁠, insufficient to obscure at ultraviolet nucleus wavelengths. It is concluded that large-scale, hundred parsecs to kiloparsecs long, dust filaments and lanes, reminiscent of those seen in the Milky Way, are a common ingredient to the central parsec of galaxies. Their optical thickness changes along their structure in type 2 reaching optical depths high enough to obscure the nucleus in full. Their location with respect to the nucleus and increasing gradient in optical depth towards the centre could naturally lead to the canonical type 1/2 AGN classification, making these filaments to play the role of the torus. Dust filaments and lanes show equivalent morphologies in molecular gas. The evolution of satellite galaxies is shaped by their constant interaction with the circumgalactic medium surrounding central galaxies, which in turn may be affected by gas and energy ejected from the central supermassive black hole1–6. The nature of such a coupling between black holes and galaxies is, however, much debated7–9 and observational evidence remains scarce10,11. Here we report an analysis of archival data on 124,163 satellite galaxies in the potential wells of 29,631 dark matter halos with masses between 1012 and 1014 solar masses. We find that quenched satellite galaxies are relatively less frequent along the minor axis of their central galaxies. This observation might appear counterintuitive given that black hole activity is expected to eject mass and energy preferentially in the direction of the minor axis of the host galaxy. We show, however, that the observed anisotropic signal results precisely from the ejective nature of black hole feedback in massive halos, as outflows powered by active galactic nuclei clear out the circumgalactic medium, reducing the ram pressure and thus preserving star formation in satellite galaxies. This interpretation is supported by the IllustrisTNG suite of cosmological numerical simulations, even though the model’s sub-grid implementation of black hole feedback is effectively isotropic12. An analysis of archival data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey finds that star-forming satellite galaxies are relatively more common along the minor axis of central galaxies owing to the effect of black hole feedback.

We use analytical methods to develop a mathematical model that expresses the relationship between the linear size of some extragalactic radio sources (EGRS) and their redshift . Result shows that , where . For the purpose of obtaining an empirical relation of similar form, we carry out simple linear regression analyses of the observed linear sizes of these EGRS in our sample against their respective observed redshifts. We obtain an empirical relation of the form, , where and for radio-loud quasars and radio galaxies respectively, with correlation coefficients given by, for each of the sources. The correlation is marginal/slight. Comparing the theoretical and empirical relations, we find that the data show an inverse correlation which is similar to the theory. This suggestively indicates presence of cosmological effects on the size evolution of the radio sources. Moreover, we find that similarity in the behavior of the two sources in the plane, simply supports quasar/galaxy unification scheme in which the different observable properties that characterize these two subclasses of radio sources are aspect-dependent.

One of the mainstreams in modern X-ray astronomy is research into extragalactic X-ray sources on the basis of the data acquired at the X-ray Multi-Mirror Newton (XMM-Newton) space observatory. According to observations, X-rays coming from galaxies are mainly radiated from their central regions, i.e., active galactic nuclei and groups of X-ray sources in the galactic disks. In this paper, we consider the cross-correlation between the 4XMM-DR9 catalog and the Hyper-Linked Extragalactic Databases and Archives (HyperLeda) of galaxies. The 4XMM-DR9 catalog is a large, up-to-date catalog of observations, which contains 550 124 unique sources and covers 2.85% of the sky, while the HyperLeda database comprises 1.5 million galaxies. Our analysis resulted in a sample of more than 5000 X-ray galaxies, most of which are active galactic nuclei of low luminosity. From this sample, we selected galaxies whose the X-ray flux exceeds F = 10–20 J/cm2s. The sources of this kind are of particular interest since it is easier to construct an informative spectrum for them. The identified and classified catalog of 1172 manually verified galaxies—the X-ray galaxy catalog named Xgal—was created. In the Xgal catalog, most galaxies have an active X-ray nucleus; Seyfert galaxies predominate among them at short distances, while quasars are prevalent at large distances. We revealed 169 galaxies that exhibit extended nuclei with a visible surface brightness distribution and 173 galaxies with more than one X-ray source. Based on the Xgal catalog, we created a catalog of elongated X-ray galaxies (the optical angular sizes of which are a > 60″) that have X-ray sources outside the nucleus. Both catalogs are freely accessible. The Xgal catalog may serve to construct the spectra of objects of a certain class in different ranges, to develop or improve the theory of their emission, and to survey bright and extended quasars. Moreover, the entire cross-sample may be used to study active galactic nuclei with low luminosity and a large-scale structure of the universe in the X-ray range.

Accretion states, which are universally observed in stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries, are also anticipated in active galactic nuclei (AGN). This is the case at low luminosities, when the jet-corona coupling dominates the energy output in both populations. Previous attempts to extend this framework to a wider AGN population have been extremely challenging due to heavy hydrogen absorption of the accretion disc continuum and starlight contamination from the host galaxies. We present the luminosity-excitation diagram (LED), based on the [OIV]$_{25.9\mu m}$ and [NeII]$_{12.8\mu m}$ mid-infrared nebular line fluxes. This tool enables to probe the accretion disc contribution to the ionising continuum. When applied to a sample of 167 nearby AGN, the LED recovers the characteristic q-shaped morphology outlined by individual X-ray binaries during a typical accretion episode, allowing us to tentatively identify the main accretion states. The soft state would include broad-line Seyferts and about half of the Seyfert 2 population, showing highly excited gas and radio-quiet cores consistent with disc-dominated nuclei. The hard state mostly includes low-luminosity AGN ($\leq 10^{-3}\, \rm{L_{Edd}}$) characterised by low-excitation radio-loud nuclei and a negligible disc contribution. The remaining half of Seyfert 2 nuclei and the bright LINERs show low excitation at high accretion luminosities, and could be identified with the bright-hard and intermediate states. Their hosts show ongoing star formation in the central kiloparsecs. We discuss the above scenario, its potential links with the galaxy evolution picture and the possible presence of accretion state transitions in AGN, as suggested by the growing population of changing-look quasars., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The inflow of cosmological gas onto haloes, while challenging to directly observe and quantify, plays a fundamental role in the baryon cycle of galaxies. Using the EAGLE suite of hydrodynamical simulations, we present a thorough exploration of the physical properties of gas accreting onto haloes -- namely, its spatial characteristics, density, temperature, and metallicity. Classifying accretion as ``hot'' or `` cold'' based on a temperature cut of $10^{5.5}{\rm K}$, we find that the covering fraction ($f_{\rm cov}$) of cold-mode accreting gas is significantly lower than the hot-mode, with $z=0$ $f_{\rm cov}$ values of $\approx 50\%$ and $\approx 80\%$ respectively. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback in EAGLE reduces inflow $f_{\rm cov}$ values by $\approx 10\%$, with outflows decreasing the solid angle available for accretion flows. Classifying inflow by particle history, we find that gas on first-infall onto a halo is metal-depleted by $\approx 2$~dex compared to pre-processed gas, which we find to mimic the circum-galactic medium (CGM) in terms of metal content. We also show that high (low) halo-scale gas accretion rates are associated with metal-poor (rich) CGM in haloes below $10^{12}M_{\odot}$, and that variation in halo-scale gas accretion rates may offer a physical explanation for the enhanced scatter in the star-forming main sequence at low ($\lesssim10^{9}M_{\odot}$) and high ($\gtrsim10^{10}M_{\odot}$) stellar masses. Our results highlight how gas inflow influences several halo- and galaxy-scale properties, and the need to combine kinematic and chemical data in order to confidently break the degeneracy between accreting and outgoing gas in CGM observations., 24 pages, 13 figures. A detailed study of the morphology of lenticular galaxies is an important way to understand how this type of galaxy formed and evolves over time. Decomposing a galaxy into its components (disc, bulge, bar, ...) allows recovering the colour gradients present in each system, its star formation history, and its assembly history. We use GALFITM to perform a multi-wavelength structural decomposition of the closest lenticular galaxy, NGC 3115, resulting in the description of its stellar light into several main components: a bulge, a thin disc, a thick disc and also evidence of a bar. We report the finding of central bluer stellar populations in the bulge, as compared to the colour of the galaxy outskirts, indicating either the presence of an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) and/or recent star formation activity. From the spectral energy distribution results, we show that the galaxy has a low luminosity AGN component, but even excluding the effect of the nuclear activity, the bulge is still bluer than the outer-regions of the galaxy, revealing a recent episode of star formation. Based on all of the derived properties, we propose a scenario for the formation of NGC 3115 consisting of an initial gas-rich merger, followed by accretions and feedback that quench the galaxy, until a recent encounter with the companion KK084 that reignited the star formation in the bulge, provoked a core displacement in NGC 3115 and generated spiral-like features. We present radio observations of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and combine them with archival multi-frequency observations to understand whether ULIRGs are the progenitors of the powerful radio loud galaxies in the local Universe. ULIRGs are characterized by large infrared luminosities ($L_{IR}>$10$^{12}$L$\odot$), large dust masses ($\sim10^{8}M_{\odot}$) and vigorous star formation (star formation rates $\sim$10-100 $M_{\odot}~$yr$^{-1}$). Studies show that they represent the end stages of mergers of gas-rich spiral galaxies. Their luminosity can be due to both starburst activity and active galactic nuclei (AGN). We study a sample of 13 ULIRGs that have optically identified AGN characteristics with 1.28~GHz GMRT observations. Our aim is to resolve any core-jet structures or nuclear extensions and hence examine whether the ULIRGs are evolving into radio loud ellipticals. Our deep, low frequency observations show marginal extension for only one source. However, the integrated radio spectra of 9 ULIRGs show characteristics that are similar to that of GPS/CSS/CSO/young radio sources. The estimated spectral ages are 0.4 to 20 Myr and indicate that they are young radio sources and possible progenitors of radio galaxies. Hence, we conclude that although most ULIRGs do not show kpc scale extended radio emission associated with nuclear activity, their radio spectral energy distributions do show signatures of young radio galaxies., 16 pages, 13 figures. The intracluster medium (ICM) is a multi-phase environment, dynamically regulated by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), the motions of galaxies through it, and mergers with other clusters. AGN as a central heating source are key to preventing runaway cooling flows, but their role in heating cores in a cosmological context is still poorly understood. The activity of the AGN is strongly linked to star formation, especially in the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG), likely because both rely on cold phase gas. A self-consistent model for AGN and star formation in galaxy clusters thus requires cosmological context, higher resolution, and a careful modeling of cooling and heating balance. In this paper, we use the high-resolution hydrodynamical cosmological simulation of the RomulusC galaxy cluster to study in detail the role of AGN and a major, head-on merger in shaping the cluster core. The unprecedented resolution of the RomulusC simulation captures the multiphase structure of the ICM. The realistic large-scale outflows launched by very small-scale thermal injections, the improved modeling of turbulent diffusion and mixing, and the particle nature of the simulation allow us to carefully separate different heating channels. We show that AGN activity, while efficient at regulating star formation, is incapable of destroying a CC. Instead, that process is facilitated by a head-on, 1:8 mass ratio merger. The merger generates bulk and turbulent motions, which in turn mix high entropy gas generated by AGN and merger driven shocks, turbulent dissipation and sloshing of the ICM by infalling substructures. While central cooling times remain shorter than the Hubble time, restoring a CC is made more difficult by the reduced precipitation rates at larger radii, emphasizing that the AGN-ICM connection is truly a multi-scale problem.

Using the apparent-magnitude limited active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 (SDSS DR12), we investigate the environmental dependence of age, stellar mass, the star formation rate (SFR) and stellar velocity dispersion of AGN host galaxies. We divide the whole apparent-magnitude limited AGN sample into many subsamples with a redshift binning size of Δz = 0.01, and analyse the environmental dependence of these galaxy properties of subsamples in each redshift bin. It turns out that these parameters of AGN host galaxies seemingly only have a weak environmental dependence.

In this paper, we describe the results of three-dimensional relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations aimed at probing the role of regular magnetic field on the development of the instability that accompanies recollimation of relativistic jets. In particular, we studied the recollimation driven by the reconfinement of jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN) by the thermal pressure of galactic coronas. We find that a relatively weak azimuthal magnetic field can completely suppress the recollimation instability in such jets, with the critical magnetisation parameter $\sigma_{cr} < 0.01$. We argue that the recollimation instability is a variant of the centrifugal instability (CFI) and show that our results are consistent with the predictions based on the study of magnetic CFI in rotating fluids. UltraFast Outflows (UFO) are observed in some active galactic nuclei (AGN), with blueshifted and highly ionised Fe-K absorption features. AGN typically have a UV bright accretion flow, so UV line driving is an obvious candidate for launching these winds. However this mechanism requires material with UV opacity, in apparent conflict with the observed high ionisation state of the wind. In this paper we synthesise the X-ray energy spectra resulting from different lines of sight through a state of the art radiation hydrodynamics UV line driven disc wind simulation. We demonstrate that there are some lines of sight which only intercept highly ionised and fast outflowing material. The cooler material required for the UV line driving acceleration is out of the line of sight, close to the disc, shielded from the X-rays by a failed wind. We fit these simulated wind spectra to data from the archetypal UFO source PG 1211+143 and show that they broadly reproduce the depth and velocity of the iron absorption lines seen. This directly demonstrates that UV line driving is a viable mechanism to launch even the fastest UFOs. We simulate microcalorimeter observations of this wind and show that their high energy resolution can resolve the detailed structure in the wind and recover the wind energetics when combined with models which correctly estimate the line formation radius of the wind. The near-infrared spectra of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) present emission lines of different atomic and molecular species. The mechanisms involved in the origin of these emission lines in AGN are still not fully understood. We use J and K band integral field spectra of six luminous ($43.1, Comment: 18 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The nearby face-on spiral galaxy NGC 2617 underwent an unambiguous 'inside-out' multi-wavelength outburst in Spring 2013, and a dramatic Seyfert type change probably between 2010 and 2012, with the emergence of broad optical emission lines. To search for the jet activity associated with this variable accretion activity, we carried out multi-resolution and multi-wavelength radio observations. Using the very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.7 and 5.0 GHz, we find that NGC 2617 shows a partially synchrotron self-absorbed compact radio core with a significant core shift, and an optically thin steep-spectrum jet extending towards the north up to about two parsecs in projection. We also observed NGC 2617 with the electronic Multi-Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN) at 1.5 and 5.5 GHz, and revisited the archival data of the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The radio core had a stable flux density of about 1.4 mJy at 5.0 GHz between 2013 June and 2014 January, in agreement with the expectation of a supermassive black hole in the low accretion rate state. The northern jet component is unlikely to be associated with the 'inside-out' outburst of 2013. We present a spectroscopic and imaging study of an abnormal active galactic nucleus (AGN), 2MASX J00423991+3017515. This AGN is newly identified in the hard X-rays by the Swift BAT All-Sky survey and found in an edge-on disk galaxy interacting with a nearby companion. Here, we analyze the first optical spectra obtained for this system (taken in 2011 and 2016), high-resolution imaging taken with the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory, and 1" imaging with the Very Large Array. Two unique properties are revealed: the peaks of the broad Balmer emission lines (associated with gas orbiting very near the supermassive black hole) are blue shifted from the corresponding narrow line emission and host galaxy absorption by 1540 km/s, and the AGN is spatially displaced from the apparent center of its host galaxy by 3.8 kpc. We explore several scenarios to explain these features, along with other anomalies, and propose that 2MASX J00423991+3017515 may be an AGN with an unusually strong wind residing in a uniquely configured major merger, or that it is an AGN recoiling from either a gravitational "slingshot" in a three-body interaction or from a kick due to the asymmetric emission of gravitational waves following the coalescence of two progenitor supermassive black holes., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) systems result from galaxy mergers, and will eventually coalesce due to gravitational wave (GW) emission if the binary separation can be reduced to $\lesssim 0.1$ pc by other mechanisms. Here, we explore a gravitational self-lensing binary SMBH model for the sharp (duration $\sim 1$ hr), quasi-regular X-ray flares -- dubbed quasi-periodic eruptions -- recently observed from two low mass active galactic nuclei: GSN 069 and RX J1301.9+2747. In our model, the binary is observed $\sim$edge-on, such that each SMBH gravitationally lenses light from the accretion disc surrounding the other SMBH twice per orbital period. The model can reproduce the flare spacings if the current eccentricity of RX J1301.9+2747 is $\epsilon_0 \gtrsim 0.16$, implying a merger within $\sim 1000$ yrs. However, we cannot reproduce the observed flare profiles with our current calculations. Model flares with the correct amplitude are $\sim 2/5$ the observed duration, and model flares with the correct duration are $\sim 2/5$ the observed amplitude. Our modelling yields three distinct behaviours of self-lensing binary systems that can be searched for in current and future X-ray and optical time-domain surveys: i) periodic lensing flares, ii) partial eclipses (caused by occultation of the background mini-disc by the foreground mini-disc), and iii) partial eclipses with a very sharp in-eclipse lensing flare. Discovery of such features would constitute very strong evidence for the presence of a supermassive binary, and monitoring of the flare spacings will provide a measurement of periastron precession., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Mrk~231 is the closest radio-quiet quasar known and one of the most luminous infrared galaxies in the local Universe. It is characterised by the co-existence of a radio jet and powerful multi-phase multi-scale outflows, making it an ideal laboratory to study active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. We analyse the multi-epoch very long baseline interferometry data of Mrk~231 and estimate the jet head advance speed to be $\lesssim0.013\ c$, suggesting a sub-relativistic jet flow. The jet position angle changes from $-113^\circ$ in the inner parsec to $-172^\circ$ at a projected distance of 25 parsec. The jet structure change might result from either a jet bending following the rotation of the circum-nuclear disc or the projection of a helical jet on the plane of the sky. In the large opening angle ($\sim60^\circ$) cone, the curved jet interacts with the interstellar medium and creates wide-aperture-angle shocks which subsequently dissipate a large portion of the jet power through radiation and contribute to powering the large-scale outflows. The low power and bent structure of the Mrk~231 jet, as well as extensive radiation dissipation, are consistent with the obstruction of the short-length jet by the host galaxy's environment., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. During the first all-sky survey of the SRG orbital observatory, the X-ray source SRGE J170245.3+130104 was discovered with the eROSITA telescope on March 13–15, 2020. Its optical counterpart was identified by photometric attributes as a candidate for distant quasars at $$z\approx 5.5$$ . The spectroscopic observations of the object carried out in August and September 2020 at the 6-m BTA telescope with the SCORPIO-II instrument confirmed that SRGE J170245.3+130104 is a quasar at redshift $$z_{\textrm{{spec}}}=5.466\pm 0.003$$ . According to the eROSITA data obtained during the first sky survey, the X-ray luminosity of the quasar is $$3.6^{+2.1}_{-1.5}\times 10^{46}$$ erg s $${}^{-1}$$ in the 2–10 keV energy band, while its X-ray spectrum can be approximately fitted by a power law with a slope $$\Gamma=1.8^{+0.9}_{-0.8}$$ . The quasar was detected again with the eROSITA telescope half a year later (on September 13–14, 2020) during the second sky survey, with its X-ray luminosity, probably, having decreased approximately by a factor of 2 at a confidence level $${\approx}1.9\sigma$$ . SRGE J170245.3+130104 has turned out to be the most X-ray luminous quasar among all of the known quasars at redshifts $$z>5$$ . At the same time, it is also one of the radio loudest distant quasars (radio loudness $$R\sim 10^{3}$$ ), which may imply that this is a blazar. We present a catalog of all the quasars at $$z>5$$ detected in X-rays to date.

Many Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) surveys rely on optical emission line signatures for robust source classification. There are, however, examples of luminous AGN candidates lacking such signatures, including those from the narrow line region, which are expected to be less susceptible to classical nuclear (torus) obscuration. Here, we seek to formalise this subpopulation of AGN with a prototypical candidate, SDSS J075139.06+402810.9. This shows IR colours typical for AGN, an optical spectrum dominated by an early type galaxy continuum,an [OIII] 5007\r{A} limiting flux about two dex below Type 2 quasars at similar IR power, and a k-corrected 12 micron quasar-like luminosity of $\sim$ 10$^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. These characteristics are not consistent with jet and host galaxy dilution. A potential scenario to explain this AGN quiescence in the optical is a sky-covering "cocoon" of obscuring material, such that the AGN ionising radiation is unable to escape and excite gas on kpc scales. Alternatively, we may be witnessing the short phase between recent triggering of obscured AGN activity and the subsequent narrow line excitation. This prototype could define the base properties of an emerging candidate AGN subtype - an intriguing transitional phase in AGN and galaxy evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Gamma-ray emission in active galaxies is likely produced within the inner jet, or in the close vicinity of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at sub-parsec distances. Gamma rays have to pass through the surrounding massive stellar cluster which luminous stars can accidentally appear close to the observer's line of sight. In such a case, soft radiation of massive stars can create enough target for transient absorption of the gamma rays in multi-GeV to TeV energy range. We consider the effect of such stellar encounters on the gamma-ray spectrum produced within the massive stellar cluster surrounding a central SMBH. We predict characteristic, time-dependent effects on the gamma-ray spectra due to the encounter with the single luminous star and also stellar binary system. We conclude that during the encounter, the gamma-ray spectrum of an active galaxy should steepen at tens of GeV and harden in the range of hundreds of GeV. As an example, we consider such effects on the spectra observed from a typical blazar, 1ES\ 1959+650 (in an active state) and also in the case of a radio galaxy M87 (in a low state). It is shown that observation of such transient characteristic features in the gamma-ray spectra, observed from blazars and radio galaxies, lays within the sensitivity of the future Cherenkov Telescope Array., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We investigate the infrared (IR) emission of high-redshift ($z\sim 6$), highly star-forming (${ {\rm SFR} > 100}$ $M_{\rm \odot} {\rm yr}^{-1}$) galaxies, with/without Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), using a suite of cosmological simulations featuring dust radiative transfer. Synthetic Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) are used to quantify the relative contribution of stars/AGN to dust heating. In dusty (${M_{\rm d}\gtrsim 3\times 10^7 M_{\rm \odot}}$) galaxies, $\gtrsim 50-90 \%$ of the UV radiation is obscured by dust inhomogeneities on scales ${\gtrsim 100}$ pc. In runs with AGN, a clumpy, warm ($\approx 250$ K) dust component co-exists with a colder ($\approx 60$ K) and more diffuse one, heated by stars. Warm dust provides up to ${50 \%}$ of the total IR luminosity, but only $\lesssim 0.1 \%$ of the total mass content. The AGN boosts the MIR flux by ${10-100 \times}$ with respect to star forming galaxies, without significantly affecting the FIR. Our simulations successfully reproduce the observed SED of bright (${M_{\rm UV}\sim -26}$) ${z\sim 6}$ quasars, and show that these objects are part of complex, dust-rich merging systems, containing multiple sources (accreting BHs and/or star forming galaxies) in agreement with recent HST and ALMA observations. Our results show that the proposed ORIGINS missions will be able to investigate the MIR properties of dusty star forming galaxies and to obtain good quality spectra of bright quasars at $z\sim 6$. Finally, the MIR-to-FIR flux ratio of faint (${M_{\rm UV}\sim -24}$) AGN is ${>10\times}$ higher than for normal star forming galaxies. The past decade has seen significant progress in understanding galaxy formation and evolution using large-scale cosmological simulations. While these simulations produce galaxies in overall good agreement with observations, they employ different sub-grid models for galaxies and supermassive black holes (BHs). We investigate the impact of the sub-grid models on the BH mass properties of the Illustris, TNG100, TNG300, Horizon-AGN, EAGLE, and SIMBA simulations, focusing on the M_BH-M_star relation and the BH mass function. All simulations predict tight M_BH-M_star relations, and struggle to produce the lowest (M_BH< 10^7.5 Msun) in galaxies of M_star~10^10.5-10^11.5 Msun. While the time evolution of the mean M_BH-M_star relation is mild (10^9 Msun in most of the simulations. The BH mass function is dominated by efficiently accreting BHs (log10 f_Edd >-2$) at high redshifts, and transitions progressively from the high-mass to the low-mass end to be governed by inactive BHs. The transition time and the contribution of active BHs are different among the simulations, and can be used to evaluate models against observations., Comment: Published version - MNRAS

The spectra of active galactic nuclei usually exhibit wings in some emission lines, such as [OIII]$\lambda\lambda$5007,4959, with these wings generally being blueshifted and related to strong winds and outflows. The aim of this work was to analyse the [OIII] emission lines in broad line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies in order to detect the presence of wings, and to study the [OIII] line properties and their possible connection with the central engine. In addition, we attempted to compare the black hole mass distribution in both BLS1 galaxies with symmetric and blue-asymmetric [OIII] profiles. For this purpose, we carried out a spectroscopic study of a sample of 45 nearby southern BLS1 galaxies from the 6 Degree Field Galaxy survey. The [OIII] emission lines were well fitted using a single Gaussian function in 23 galaxies, while 22 objects presented a wing component and required a double-Gaussian decomposition. By computing the radial velocity difference between the wing and core centroids (i.e. $\Delta$v), we found 18 galaxies exhibiting blueshifted wings, 2 objects presenting red wings and 2 galaxies showing symmetric wings ($\Delta$v$= 0$). Moreover, $\Delta$v was slightly correlated with the black hole mass. In addition, we computed the radial velocity difference of the blue-side full extension of the wing relative to the centroid of the core component through the \emph{blue emission} parameter, which revealed a correlation with black hole mass, in agreement with previous results reported for narrow line galaxies. Finally, in our sample, similar black hole mass distributions were observed in both BLS1 galaxies with symmetric and blueshifted asymmetric [OIII] profiles., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables. We argue that charged dust grains could significantly impact the confinement and transport of galactic cosmic rays. For sub-GeV to ∼103 GeV cosmic rays, small-scale parallel Alfvén waves, which isotropize cosmic rays through gyro-resonant interactions, are also gyro-resonant with charged grains. If the dust is nearly stationary, as in the bulk of the interstellar medium, Alfvén waves are damped by dust. This will reduce the amplitude of Alfvén waves produced by the cosmic rays through the streaming instability, thus enhancing cosmic ray transport. In well-ionized regions, the dust damping rate is larger by a factor of ∼10 than other mechanisms that damp parallel Alfvén waves at the scales relevant for ∼GeV cosmic rays, suggesting that dust could play a key role in regulating cosmic ray transport. In astrophysical situations in which the dust moves through the gas with super-Alfvénic velocities, Alfvén waves are rendered unstable, which could directly scatter cosmic rays. This interaction has the potential to create a strong feedback mechanism where dust, driven through the gas by radiation pressure, then strongly enhances the confinement of cosmic rays, increasing their capacity to drive outflows. This mechanism may act in the circumgalactic medium around star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei.

With the advent of deep optical-to-near-infrared extragalactic imaging on the degree scale, samples of high-redshift sources are being selected that contain both bright star-forming (SF) galaxies and faint active galactic nuclei (AGN). In this study we investigate the transition between SF and AGN-dominated systems at $z \simeq 4$ in the rest-frame UV. We find a rapid transition to AGN-dominated sources bright-ward of $M_{\rm UV} \simeq -23.2$. The effect is observed in the rest-frame UV morphology and size-luminosity relation, where extended clumpy systems become point-source dominated, and also in the available spectra for the sample. These results allow us to derive the rest-frame UV luminosity function for the SF and AGN-dominated sub-samples. We find the SF-dominated LF is best fit with a double-power law, with a lensed Schechter function being unable to explain the existence of extremely luminous SF galaxies at $M_{\rm UV} \simeq -23.5$. If we identify AGN-dominated sources according to a point-source morphology criterion we recover the relatively flat faint-end slope of the AGN LF determined in previous studies. If we instead separate the LF according to the current spectroscopic AGN fraction, we find a steeper faint-end slope of $\alpha = -1.83 \pm 0.11$. Using a simple model to predict the rest-frame AGN LF from the $z = 4 $ galaxy LF we find that the increasing impact of host galaxy light on the measured morphology of faint AGN can explain our observations., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables. X-ray quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in AGN allow us to probe and understand the nature of accretion in highly curved space-time, yet the most robust form of detection (i.e. repeat detections over multiple observations) has been limited to a single source to-date, with only tentative claims of single observation detections in several others. The association of those established AGN QPOs with a specific spectral component has motivated us to search the XMM-Newton archive and analyse the energy-resolved lightcurves of 38 bright AGN. We apply a conservative false alarm testing routine folding in the uncertainty and covariance of the underlying broad-band noise. We also explore the impact of red-noise leak and the assumption of various different forms (power-law, broken power-law and lorentzians) for the underlying broad-band noise. In this initial study, we report QPO candidates in 6 AGN (7 including one tentative detection in MRK~766) from our sample of 38, which tend to be found at characteristic energies and, in four cases, at the same frequency across at least two observations, indicating they are highly unlikely to be spurious in nature., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures.
