Search

This white paper is meant to capture many different elements of stellar astrophysics and galactic archaeology that highlight the important role this science will play in the 2020s era of precision astronomy.

AR Scorpii is unique amongst known white dwarf binaries in showing powerful pulsations extending to radio frequencies. Here we aim to investigate the multi-frequency radio emission of AR Sco in detail, in order to constrain its origin and emission mechanisms. We present interferometric radio frequency imaging of AR Sco at 1.5, 5 and 9 GHz, analysing the total flux and polarization behaviour of this source at high time resolution (10, 3 and 3 s), across a full 3.6 hr orbital period in each band. We find strong modulation of the radio flux on the orbital period and the orbital sideband of the white dwarf's spin period (also known as the "beat" period). This indicates that, like the optical flux, the radio flux arises predominantly from on or near the inner surface of the M-dwarf companion star. The beat-phase pulsations of AR Sco decrease in strength with decreasing frequency. They are strongest at 9 GHz and at an orbital phase ~0.5. Unlike the optical emission from this source, radio emission from AR Sco shows weak linear polarization but very strong circular polarization, reaching ~30% at an orbital phase ~0.8. We infer the probable existence of a non-relativistic cyclotron emission component, which dominates at low radio frequencies. We present time-resolved J-band spectroscopy of the short period cataclysmic variable SDSS J143317.78+101123.3. We detect absorption lines from the sub-stellar donor star in this system, which contributes 38 +/- 5% to the J-band light. From the relative strengths of the absorption lines in the J-band, we estimate the spectral type of the donor star to be L2 +/- 1. These data are the first spectroscopic detection of a confirmed sub-stellar donor in a cataclysmic variable, and the spectral type is consistent with that expected from semi-empirical evolutionary models. Using skew mapping, we have been able to derive an estimate for the radial velocity of the donor of Kd = 520 +/- 60 km/s. This value is consistent with, though much less precise than, predictions from mass determinations found via photometric fitting of the eclipse light curves., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We present phase-resolved spectroscopy of two new short period low accretion rate magnetic binaries, SDSSJ125044.42+154957.3 (Porb = 86 min) and SDSSJ151415.65+074446.5 (Porb = 89 min). Both systems were previously identified as magnetic white dwarfs from the Zeeman splitting of the Balmer absorption lines in their optical spectra. Their spectral energy distributions exhibit a large near-infrared excess, which we interpret as a combination of cyclotron emission and possibly a late type companion star. No absorption features from the companion are seen in our optical spectra. We derive the orbital periods from a narrow, variable H_alpha emission line which we show to originate on the companion star. The high radial velocity amplitude measured in both systems suggests a high orbital inclination, but we find no evidence for eclipses in our data. The two new systems resemble the polar EF Eri in its prolonged low state and also SDSSJ121209.31+013627.7, a known magnetic white dwarf plus possible brown dwarf binary, which was also recovered by our method., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. BB Dor was observed during its low state state in 2009. Signatures of both binary components are revealed in the average optical spectrum; no signature of accretion is observed. Narrow emission lines of Halpha, HeI and Na-D, as well as TiO absorption troughs trace the motion of the irradiated secondary star. We detect two additional components in the Halpha emission line that share many characteristics of similar "satellite" lines observed in the low state of magnetic cataclysmic variables of AM Her type. We present the results of the first spectroscopic follow-up of 132 optically blue ultraviolet (UV)-excess sources selected from the UV-Excess Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (UVEX). The UV-excess spectra are classified into different populations and grids of model spectra are fitted to determine spectral types, temperatures, surface gravities and reddening. From this initial spectroscopic follow-up 95 per cent of the UV-excess candidates turn out to be genuine UV-excess sources such as white dwarfs, white dwarf binaries, subdwarf types O and B, emission-line stars and quasi stellar objects. The remaining sources are classified as slightly reddened main-sequence stars with spectral types later than A0V. The fraction of DA white dwarfs is 47 per cent with reddening smaller than E(B − V) ≤ 0.7 mag. Relations between the different populations and their UVEX photometry, Galactic latitude and reddening are shown. A larger fraction of UVEX white dwarfs is found at magnitudes fainter than g > 17 and Galactic latitude smaller than |b| < 4 compared to main-sequence stars, blue horizontal branch stars and subdwarfs.

We identify SDSSJ121010.1+334722.9 as an eclipsing post-common-envelope binary, with an orbital period of P ~ 3 hrs, containing a very cool, low-mass, DAZ white dwarf and a low-mass main-sequence star of spectral type M5. A model atmosphere analysis of the metal absorption lines detected in the blue part of the optical spectrum, along with the GALEX near-ultraviolet flux, yields a white dwarf temperature of 6000 +/- 200 K and a metallicity value of log(Z/H)= -2.0 +/- 0.3. The sodium absorption doublet is used to measure the radial velocity of the secondary star, K2 ~ 252 km/s and iron absorption lines in the blue part of the spectrum provide the radial velocity of the white dwarf, K1 ~ 95 km/s, yielding a mass ratio of q ~ 0.38. Light curve model fitting, using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, gives the inclination angle as i = (79.05 - 79.36) +/- 0.15 degrees, and the stellar masses as M1 = 0.415 +/- 0.010 solar-masses and M2 = 0.158 +/- 0.006 solar-masses. Systematic uncertainties in the absolute calibration of the photometric data influence the determination of the stellar radii. The radius of the white dwarf is found to be R1 = (0.0157 - 0.0161) +/- 0.0003 solar-radii and the volume-averaged radius of the tidally distorted secondary is R2 = (0.197 - 0.203) +/- 0.003 solar-radii. We present a method which uses colour-colour cuts on SDSS photometry to select white dwarfs with hydrogen rich (DA) atmospheres without the recourse to spectroscopy. This method results in a sample of DA white dwarfs that is 95% complete at an efficiency of returning a true DA white dwarf of 62%. The approach was applied to SDSS Data Release 7 for objects with and without SDSS spectroscopy. This lead to 4636 spectroscopically confirmed DA white dwarfs with g~ 8000K. We further cross-correlated the SDSS sample with Data Release 8 of the UKIDSS Large Area Survey. The spectral energy distributions of both subsets, with and without SDSS spectroscopy, were fitted with white dwarf models to determine the fraction of DA white dwarfs with low-mass stellar companions or dusty debris discs via the detection of excess near-infrared emission. From the spectroscopic sample we find that 2.0% of white dwarfs have an excess consistent with a brown dwarf type companion, with a firm lower limit of 0.8%. From the white dwarfs with photometry only, we find that 1.8% are candidates for having brown dwarf companions. Similarly, both samples show that ~1% of white dwarfs are candidates for having a dusty debris disc., Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 29 pages, 23 figures, 10 tables. We have identified a star in the WASP archive photometry with an unusual lightcurve due to the total eclipse of a small, hot star by an apparently normal A-type star and with an orbital period of only 0.668d. From an analysis of the WASP lightcurve together with V-band and I_C-band photometry of the eclipse and a spectroscopic orbit for the A-type star we estimate that the companion star has a mass of (0.23+-0.03)Msun and a radius of (0.33+-0.01)Rsun, assuming that the A-type star is a main-sequence star with the metalicity appropriate for a thick-disk star. The effective temperature of the companion is (13400+-1200)K from which we infer a luminosity of (3+-1)Lsun. From a comparison of these parameters to various models we conclude that the companion is most likely to be the remnant of a red giant star that has been very recently stripped of its outer layers by mass transfer onto the A-type star. In this scenario, the companion is currently in a shell hydrogen-burning phase of its evolution, evolving at nearly constant luminosity to hotter effective temperatures prior to ceasing hydrogen burning and fading to become a low-mass white dwarf composed of helium (He-WD). The system will then resemble the pre-He-WD/He-WD companions to A-type and B-type stars recently identified from their Kepler satellite lightcurves (KOI-74, KOI-81 and KIC10657664). We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy of V458 Vulpeculae (Nova Vul 2007 No. 1) spread over a period of 15 months starting 301 d after its discovery. Our data reveal radial-velocity variations in the He iiλ5412 and He iiλ4686 emission lines. A period analysis of the radial-velocity curves resulted in a period of 98.096 47 ± 0.000 25 min (0.068 122 55 ± 0.000 000 17 d) which we identify with the orbital period of the binary system. V458 Vul is therefore the planetary nebula central binary star with the shortest period known. We explore the possibility of the system being composed of a relatively massive white dwarf (M1≳ 1.0 M⊙) accreting matter from a post-asymptotic giant branch star which produced the planetary nebula observed. In this scenario, the central binary system therefore underwent two common-envelope episodes. A combination of previous photoionization modelling of the nebular spectra, post-asymptotic giant branch evolutionary tracks and the orbital period favour a mass of M2∼ 0.6 M⊙ for the donor star. Therefore, the total mass of the system may exceed the Chandrasekhar mass, which makes V458 Vul a Type Ia supernova progenitor candidate.

We present a catalogue of 1602 white dwarf-main sequence binaries (WDMS) from the spectroscopic Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6). Among these we identify 440 as new WDMS binaries. We select WDMS binary candidates from template fitting all 1.27 million DR6 spectra, using combined constraints in both $\chi^{2}$ and signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, we use Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and UKIRT Infrared Sky Survey (UKIDSS) magnitudes to search for objects in which one of the two components dominates the SDSS spectrum. We use a decomposition/fitting technique to measure the effective temperatures, surface gravities, masses and distances to the white dwarfs, as well as the spectral types and distances to the companions in our catalogue. Distributions and density maps obtained from these stellar parameters are then used to study both the general properties and the selection effects of WDMS binaries in SDSS. We also make use of SDSS-GALEX-UKIDSS magnitudes to investigate the distribution of WDMS binaries, as well as their white dwarf effective temperatures and companion star spectral types, in ultraviolet to infrared colour space. We show that WDMS binaries can be very efficiently separated from single main sequence stars and white dwarfs when using a combined ultraviolet, optical, and infrared colour selection. Finally, we also provide radial velocities for 1068 systems measured from the \Lines{Na}{I}{8183.27,8194.81} absorption doublet and/or the H$\alpha$ emission line. Among the systems with multiple SDSS spectroscopy, we find five new systems exhibiting significant radial velocity variations, identifying them as post-common-envelope binary candidates., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS. We present high-speed, three-colour photometry of the eclipsing cataclysmic variable SDSS J150722.30+523039.8 (hereafter SDSS J1507). This system has an orbital period of 66.61 minutes, placing it below the observed ``period minimum'' for cataclysmic variables. We determine the system parameters via a parameterised model of the eclipse fitted to the observed lightcurve by chi^2 minimisation. We obtain a mass ratio of q = 0.0623 +/- 0.0007 and an orbital inclination i = 83.63 +/- 0.05 degrees. The primary mass is M_w = 0.90 +/- 0.01 M_sun. The secondary mass and radius are found to be M_r =0.056 +/- 0.001 M_sun and R_r = 0.096 +/- 0.001 R_sun respectively. We find a distance to the system of 160 +/- 10 pc. The secondary star in SDSS J1507 has a mass substantially below the hydrogen burning limit, making it the second confirmed sub-stellar donor in a cataclysmic variable. The very short orbital period of SDSS J1507 is readily explained if the secondary star is nuclearly evolved, or if SDSS J1507 formed directly from a detached white dwarf/brown dwarf binary. Given the lack of any visible contribution from the secondary star, the very low secondary mass and the low HeI(6678AA)/Halpha emission line ratio, we argue that SDSS J1507 probably formed directly from a detached white dwarf/brown dwarf binary. If confirmed, SDSS J1507 will be the first such system identified. We present a detailed analysis of 101 white dwarf-main sequence binaries (WDMS) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) for which multiple SDSS spectra are available. We detect significant radial velocity variations in 18 WDMS, identifying them as post common envelope binaries (PCEBs) or strong PCEB candidates. Strict upper limits to the orbital periods are calculated, ranging from 0.43 to 7880 d. Given the sparse temporal sampling and relatively low spectral resolution of the SDSS spectra, our results imply a PCEB fraction of >=15% among the WDMS in the SDSS data base. Using a spectral decomposition/fitting technique we determined the white dwarf effective temperatures and surface gravities, masses, and secondary star spectral types for all WDMS in our sample. Two independent distance estimates are obtained from the flux scaling factors between the WDMS spectra, and the white dwarf models and main sequence star templates, respectively. Approximately one third of the systems in our sample show a significant discrepancy between the two distance estimates. In the majority of discrepant cases, the distance estimate based on the secondary star is too large. A possible explanation for this behaviour is that the secondary star spectral types that we determined from the SDSS spectra are systematically too early by 1-2 spectral classes. This behaviour could be explained by stellar activity, if covering a significant fraction of the star by cool dark spots will raise the temperature of the inter-spot regions. Optical photometry, spectroscopy and XMM-Newton ultraviolet and X-ray observations with full phase coverage are used for an in-depth study of WXLMi, a system formerly termed as a low-accretion rate polar. We find a constant low mass accretion rate, M_dot ~ 1.5e-13 M_sun/yr, a peculiar accretion geometry with one spot not being accessible via Roche-lobe overflow, a low temperature of the white dwarf, Teff < 8000 K and the secondary likely being Roche-lobe underfilling. All this lends further support to the changed view on WXLMi and related systems as detached binaries, i.e. magnetic post-common envelope binaries without significant Roche-lobe overflow in the past. The transfer rate determined here is compatible with accretion from a stellar wind. We use cyclotron spectroscopy to determine the accretion geometry and to constrain the plasma temperatures. Both, cyclotron spectroscopy and X-ray plasma diagnostics reveal low plasma temperatures below 3 keV on both accretion spots. For the low m_dot, high B plasma at the accretion spots in WXLMi, cyclotron cooling is dominating thermal plasma radiation in the optical. Optical spectroscopy and X-ray timing reveal atmospheric, chromospheric and coronal activity at the saturation level on the dM4.5 secondary star., Accepted for publication in A&A

We present the last HST/STIS E140M FUV spectrum (1150-1725A) of the dwarf nova (DN) WZ Sge, obtained in July 2004, 3 years following the early superoutburst of July 2001. Single white dwarf (WD) synthetic spectral fits (log{g}=8.5) to the data indicate that the WD has a temperature T~15,000K, about ~1500K above its quiescent temperature and it is still showing the effect of the outburst. Taking into account temperature estimates of the earlier phase of the cooling, we model the cooling curve of WZ Sge, over a period of 3 years, using a stellar evolution code including accretion and the effects of compressional heating. Assuming that compressional heating alone is the source of the energy released during the cooling phase, we find that (1) the mass of the white dwarf must be quite large (~1.0 Msun); and (2) the mass accretion rate must have a time-averaged (over 52 days of outburst) value of the order of 1.E-8 Msun/yr or larger. The outburst mass accretion rate derived from these compressional heating models is larger than the rates estimated from optical observations and from a FUV spectral fit by up to one order of magnitude. We present an analysis of HST STIS data of VW Hyi acquired ~ 14 days after a superoutburst. At the time of the observation the system appears to be going into outburst with the longest wavelengths increasing in flux by a factor of 5, while the shortest wavelengths increase by only a factor of 2. Using the distance of 65 pc, a system inclination angle of 60 degrees and a white dwarf mass of 0.86 solar mass, we carried out model fits involving a white dwarf by itself, an optically thisck accretion disk by itself, a composite model using an optically thick accretion disk and a white dwarf, a two-temperature white dwarf model with a cooler more slowly rotating photosphere and a hotter, rapidly rotating accretion belt and a composite model involving a white dwarf and a rapidly rotating cooler disk ring heated up to a ``low'' temperature of \~13-14,000K. This component of temperature stays fairly constant throughout the HST observations while the area of the disk ring increases by a factor of 12. We see evidence of a delay in the UV emission consistent with the outburst beginning outside of a disk truncation radius., to appear in the ApJ October 15 2004 issue

Phase-resolved HST/STIS ultraviolet spectroscopy of the high-field polar AR UMa confirms that the WD photospheric Ly alpha Zeeman features are formed in a magnetic field of ~200 MG. In addition to the Ly alpha pi and sigma+ components, we detect the forbidden hydrogen 1s0->2s0 transition, which becomes ``enabled'' in the presence of both strong magnetic and electric fields. Our attempt in fitting the overall optical+UV low state spectrum with single temperature magnetic WD models remains rather unsatisfactory, indicating either a shortcoming in the present models or a new physical process acting in AR UMa. As a result, our estimate of the WD temperature remains somewhat uncertain, Twd=20000+-5000K. We detect a broad emission bump centered at ~1445A and present throughout the entire binary orbit, and a second bump near ~1650A, which appears only near the inferior conjunction of the secondary star. These are suggestive of low harmonic cyclotron emission produced by low-level (M-dot~1e-13 Msun/yr) accretion onto both magnetic poles. However, there is no evidence in the power spectrum of light variations for accretion in gas blobs. The observed Ly alpha emission line shows a strong phase dependence with maximum flux and redshift near orbital phase phi~0.3, strongly indicating an origin on the trailing hemisphere of the secondary star. An additional Ly alpha absorption feature with similar phasing as the Ly alpha emission, but a \~700km/s blueshift could tentatively be ascribed to absorption of WD emission in a moderately fast wind. We report on follow-up spectroscopy and photometry of the cataclysmic variable candidate HS0907+1902 selected from the Hamburg Quasar Survey. B, V, and R photometry obtained during the first observed outburst of HS0907+1902 (V~13) reveals deep eclipses (DeltaV~2.1-2.8) and an orbital period Porb=4.2h with the eclipse depth decreasing to the red. The outburst eclipse profiles are symmetric, indicating an axisymmetrical brightness distribution in the accretion disc. We derive an inclination i~73deg-79deg from the eclipse duration. The quiescent spectrum obtained with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope shows double peaked emission lines of HI, HeI and FeI,II and clearly identifies the system as a dwarf nova. Absorption features of the secondary star are detected at red wavelengths from which a spectral class M3+-1.5 and a distance of d=320+-100pc are derived., Comment: 4 pages A&A-PSLatex, 5 Figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey has begun and will obtain high quality spectroscopy of some 100000 Milky Way stars, in the field and in open clusters, down to magnitude 19, systematically covering all the major components of the Milky Way. This survey will provide the first homogeneous overview of the distributions of kinematics and chemical element abundances in the Galaxy. The motivation, organisation and implementation of the Gaia-ESO Survey are described, emphasising the complementarity with the ESA Gaia mission. Spectra from the very first observing run of the survey are presented.
