Elucidating dark matter density profiles in the Galactic dwarf satellites is essential to understanding not only the quintessence of dark matter, but also the evolution of the satellites themselves. In this work, we present the current constraints on dark matter densities in the Galactic ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) and diffuse galaxies. Applying our constructed non-spherical mass models to the currently available kinematic data of the 25 UFDs and 2 diffuse satellites, we find that whereas most of the galaxies have huge uncertainties on the inferred dark matter density profiles, Eridanus~II, Segue~I, and Willman~1 favor cuspy central profiles even considering effects of a prior bias. We compare our results with the simulated subhalos on the plane between the dark matter density at 150~pc and the pericenter distance. We find that the most observed satellites and the simulated subhalos are similarly distributed on this plane, except for Antlia~2, Crater~2, and Tucana~3, which are less than one tenth of the density. Despite considerable tidal effects, the subhalos detected by commonly-used subhalo finders have difficulty in explaining such a huge deviation. We also estimate the dynamical mass-to-light ratios of the satellites and confirm the ratio is linked to stellar mass and metallicity. Tucana~3 deviates largely from these relations, while it follows the mass-metallicity relation. From a measurement of the local distortion in the surface brightness of the QSO jet, we can make a distinction between a point mass (corresponding to an IMBH) and an extended structure (corresponding to a CDM subhalo). The Andromeda galaxy (M31) shows many tidal features in its halo, including the Giant Southern Stream (GSS) and a sharp ledge in surface density on its western side (the W Shelf). Using DEIMOS on the Keck telescope, we obtain radial velocities of M31's giant stars along its NW minor axis, in a radial range covering the W Shelf and extending beyond its edge. In the space of velocity versus radius, the sample shows the wedge pattern expected from a radial shell, which is detected clearly here for the first time. This confirms predictions from an earlier model of formation of the GSS, which proposed that the W Shelf is a shell from the third orbital wrap of the same tidal debris stream that produces the GSS, with the main body of the progenitor lying in the second wrap. We calculate the distortions in the shelf wedge pattern expected from its outward expansion and angular momentum, and show that these effects are echoed in the data. In addition, a hot, relatively smooth spheroid population is clearly present. We construct a bulge-disk-halo N-body model that agrees with surface brightness and kinematic constraints, and combine it with a simulation of the GSS. From the contrasting kinematic signatures of the hot spheroid and shelf components, we decompose the observed stellar metallicity distribution into contributions from each component using a non-parametric mixture model. The shelf component's metallicity distribution matches previous observations of the GSS superbly, further strengthening the evidence they are connected and bolstering the case for a massive progenitor of this stream., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The structure and kinematics of the recognized stellar components of the Milky Way are explored, based on well-determined atmospheric parameters and kinematic quantities for 32360 calibration stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and its first extension, (SDSS-II), which included the sub-survey SEGUE: Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration. Full space motions for a sub-sample of 16920 stars, exploring a local volume within 4 kpc of the Sun, are used to derive velocity ellipsoids for the inner- and outer-halo components of the Galaxy, as well as for the canonical thick-disk and proposed metal-weak thick-disk populations. We first examine the question of whether the data require the presence of at least a two-component halo in order to account for the rotational behavior of likely halo stars in the local volume, and whether more than two components are needed. We also address the question of whether the proposed metal-weak thick disk is kinematically and chemically distinct from the canonical thick disk. In addition, we consider the fractions of each component required to understand the nature of the observed kinematic behavior of the stellar populations of the Galaxy as a function of distance from the plane. Scale lengths and scale heights for the thick-disk and metal-weak thick-disk components are determined. Spatial density profiles for the inner- and outer-halo populations are inferred from a Jeans Theorem analysis. The full set of calibration stars (including those outside the local volume) is used to test for the expected changes in the observed stellar metallicity distribution function with distance above the Galactic plane in-situ, due to the changing contributions from the underlying stellar populations. To set useful limits on the abundance of small-scale dark matter halos (subhalos) in a galaxy scale, we have carried out mid-infrared imaging and integral-field spectroscopy for a sample of quadruple lens systems showing anomalous flux ratios. These observations using Subaru have been successful for distinguishing millilensing by subhalos from microlensing by stars. We have used Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope to conduct a V- and I-band imaging survey of fields sampling the spheroid of the Andromeda galaxy along its south-east minor axis. Our photometric data are deep enough to resolve stars down to the red clump. Based on a large and reliable sample of red giant stars available from this deep wide-field imager, we have derived metallicity distributions vs. radius and a surface brightness profile over projected distances of R=23-66 kpc from the galaxy's center. The metallicity distributions across this region shows a clear high mean metallicity and a broad distribution ([Fe/H] ~ -0.6 +/- 0.5), and indicates no metallicity gradient within our observed range. The surface brightness profile at R>40 kpc is found to be flatter than previously thought. We present Subaru spectroscopy of the early-type lensing galaxies in the lens systems HST14113+5211 (z=0.464) and B2045+265 (z=0.868), being aimed at measuring the velocity dispersion of the lensing galaxies as an important component to their mass distributions and internal dynamics. For HST14113+5211 we have obtained 174+/-20km/s (1-sigma) inside an aperture of 0.9", and for B2045+265 we have obtained 213+/-23km/s inside an aperture of 1.2". To extract the significance of these information on the mass distributions and stellar dynamics of the lensing galaxies, we construct two alternative models for both the mass and velocity distributions. It is found that the mass-to-light ratios as derived from a joint lensing and stellar dynamics analysis are virtually consistent with those obtained from the use of the Fundamental Plane. Also, for HST14113+5211, we find that the total mass distribution is well reproduced by a power-law density profile with an index of 2, thereby suggesting that a singular isothermal model is a good fit to the lensing galaxy. In contrast, the corresponding slope for B2045+265 is flatter than isothermal, suggesting that additional contributions to lensing mass from surrounding structures (possibly the group of galaxies) provide the observed angular separations of multiple images., 11 pages, 9 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present further observations of the extremely red object ERO J094258+4659.2, identified by \citet{iye00} as ERO R1 in their deep images of the cluster A851. We estimate its redshift independently by eight-band photometric redshift determination and cross-correlation of a new H-band spectrum with the optical spectra of local E/S0 galaxies, and conclude that it lies at $z \sim 1.5$. Although its colors are consistent both with an elliptical galaxy and an S0 galaxy at that redshift, its elongated shape and exponential luminosity profile suggest the presence of an evolved stellar disk component. We rule out the possibility that these properties are strongly influenced by gravitational lensing by the foreground cluster, and therefore conclude that this object is more likely to be an S0-like galaxy, rather than a lensed elliptical. The H-band spectrum does not show strong H$\alpha$ emission and the star formation rate therefore appears to be very modest. The presence of such a galaxy with an apparently relaxed disk of stars at this high redshift provides a new and strong constraint on theoretical models which aim to explain the formation and evolution of galaxies., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

We present a review of recent studies of the formation and evolution of the Milky Way galaxy, in particular based on large samples of non-kinematically selected stars with available proper motions. The Milky Way is argued to be a reasonable template for the formation of large spiral galaxies, the only one in which complete kinematical and abundance information can be readily obtained. We present a method, based on the kinematic analysis of the Galactic disk stars, to clarify whether the internal motions of the stellar system in spiral arms follow those expected in the density wave theory. The method relies on the comparison with the linear relation between the phases of spatial positions and epicyclic motions of stars, as drawn from the theory. The application of the method to the 78 Galactic Cepheids near the Sun, for which accurate proper motions are available from the {\it Hipparcos} Catalogue, has revealed that these Cepheids hold no correlation between both phases, thereby implying that their motions are in contradiction with the theoretical predictions. We consider the distortion in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) due to galactic winds at high redshift. Winds outflowing from galaxies have been hypothesized to be possible sources of metals in the intergalactic medium, which is known to have been enriched to $10^{-2.5}$ Z$_{\odot}$ at $z \sim 3$. We model these winds as functions of mass of the parent galaxy and redshift, assuming they activate at a common initial redshift, $z_{in}$, and calculate the mean $y$ distortion and the angular power spectrum of the distortion in the CMB. We find that the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect due to the winds to be consistent with previous estimates. The distortion due to the kinetic SZ (kSZ) effect is, however, found to be more important than the thermal SZ (tSZ) effect. We find that the distortion due to galactic winds is an important contribution to the power spectrum of distortion at very small angular scales $(l \sim 10^4)$. We also find that the power spectrum due to clustering dominates the Poisson power spectrum for $l \le 4\hbox{--}5 \times 10^5$. We show explicitly how the combined power spectrum from wind dominates over that of clusters at 217 GHz, relevant for PLANCK. We show that the relatively strong magnetic fields ($\ge 1 \mu$G) in high redshift objects can be explained by the combined action of an evolving protogalactic fluctuation and electrodynamic processes providing the magnetic seed fields. Three different seed field mechanisms are reviewed and incorporated into a spherical "top-hat" model and tidal torque theory for the fate of a forming galaxy in an expanding universe. Very weak fields $10^{-19} \sim 10^{-23}$G created in an expanding over-dense region are strongly enhanced due to the dissipative disk formation by a factor $\sim 10^4$, and subsequently amplified by strong non-axisymmetric flow by a factor $\sim 10^{6-10}$, depending on the cosmological parameters and the epoch of galaxy formation. Abstract: The halo of the Milky Way provides unique elemental abundance and kinematic information on the first objects to form in the Universe, which can be used to tightly con-strain models of galaxy formation and evolution. This thesis presents a wide-ranging analysis of the global structure of the Galactic stellar halo system, comprising the inner and outer halos, through inference of its densityprofile(s) and determination of the kinematic and orbital parameters of its constituent stars (e.g., mean rotational velocity,velocity ellipsoids, eccentricities). The inner-halo component of the MilkyWay dominates the population of halo stars found at distances up to 10-15 kpc from the Galactic Centre, while the outer-halo component dominates in the regions beyond 15-20 kpc. It has been shown that stars in the inner-halo population are non-spherically distributed about the centre of the Galaxy, with an inferred axial ratio on the order of0.6. Inner-halo stars possess generally high orbital eccentricities, and exhibit a modest prograde rotation (between 0 and 50 km s-1) around the centre of the Galaxy (Galactocentric rotational velocity). The metallicity distribution function (MDF) for stars in the inner halo peaks at [Fe/H] = -1.6, with tails extending to higher and lower metallicities. The outer halo, by contrast, comprises stars that exhibit a much more spherical spatial distribution, with an axial ratio0.9 to 1.0. Outer-halo stars cover a wide range of orbital eccentricities, including many with lower eccentricity orbits than found for most stars associated with the inner halo, and exhibit a clear retrograde net rotation (between -40 and-70 km s-1). The MDF of the outer halo peaks at lower metallicity than that of the inner halo, around [Fe/H] = -2.2, and includes a larger fraction of low-metallicity stars than does the MDF of the inner-halo population. The properties of thethick disk andMetal Weak Thick Disk are also investigated. In addition, this studyaddresses the possible chemical distinction between the two halo components in terms of the frequency of the carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars among their membership. &nbsp
