Search

The ephemerides of minor planets are computed on the basis of astrometric observations. The asteroid orbit determination process requires these observations to be properly weighted to take into account the expected accuracy of the data. If not directly provided by the observers, the weights are, in general, computed after a station-specific statistical analysis on the observation residuals, where the influence of external factors such as epoch of observation, magnitude, and employed catalogue has been proven. In this paper, we perform a statistical analysis on observation residuals of the major surveys taking into account a new factor, i.e. the dynamical classification of asteroids, to understand whether the observation quality may have a dependence on the different type of observed object. If an influence is actually found, then it will be possible to develop a new weighting system based on these results. The weights will be easily applicable once one knows the asteroid orbit. In particular, four stations have been found having different qualities depending on whether they are observing near-Earth asteroids or main-belt asteroids. Moreover, the cross-correlation between the dynamic classification and epoch, magnitude, and catalogue is investigated, as well as the influence of these factors on observations’ quality.

In November 2019, the nearby single, isolated DQ-type white dwarf LAWD 37 (WD 1142-645) aligned closely with a distant background source and caused an astrometric microlensing event. Leveraging astrometry from \Gaia{} and followup data from the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} we measure the astrometric deflection of the background source and obtain a gravitational mass for LAWD~37. The main challenge of this analysis is in extracting the lensing signal of the faint background source whilst it is buried in the wings of LAWD~37's point spread function. Removal of LAWD 37's point spread function induces a significant amount of correlated noise which we find can mimic the astrometric lensing signal. We find a deflection model including correlated noise caused by the removal of LAWD~37's point spread function best explains the data and yields a mass for LAWD 37 of $0.56\pm0.08 M_{\odot}$. This mass is in agreement with the theoretical mass-radius relationship and cooling tracks expected for CO core white dwarfs. Furthermore, the mass is consistent with no or trace amounts of hydrogen that is expected for objects with helium-rich atmospheres like LAWD 37. We conclude that further astrometric followup data on the source is likely to improve the inference on LAWD 37's mass at the $\approx3$ percent level and definitively rule out purely correlated noise explanations of the data. The Traspena meteorite fell on 2021 January 18 about 20 km south-east of the city of Lugo (Galiza, Spain), shortly after a huge and bright fireball crossed the sky for 4.84 s. Astrometric measurements obtained from the fireball cameras of the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) as well as from many casual videos were used to determine the atmospheric trajectory of this meteoroid which penetrated the atmosphere and generated sound waves that were detected at three seismic stations. The original meteoroid had a diameter of about 1.15 m and a mass around 2620 kg. It impacted the Earth’s atmosphere with a steep entry angle of about 76 . ◦7 from a height of 75.10 km until fading away at 15.75 km with a velocity of 2.38 km s −1 . Before the impact, this small asteroid was orbiting the Sun with a semimajor axis of 1.125 au, a moderate eccentricity of 0.386, and a low inclination of 4 . ◦55. A weak evidence of dynamic link with the PHA (Potential Hazardous Asteroid) Minos was investigated. During the atmospheric entry, two major fragmentation events occurred between heights of 35 and 29 km at aerodynamic pressures between 1 and 5 MPa. The strewn field was computed after calculating the individual dark flights of the main body along with two smaller fragments. For- tunately, 2 month after the superbolide, a 527-g meteorite was found. It was examined using several geochemical and petrographic analyses which allowed us to classify it as a moderately shocked (S3) L5 ordinary chondrite with a bulk density of 3.25 g cm −3 ., This paper was supported by the Xunta de Galicia (Spain) under the ED431B 2020/38 grant.

In the past years, we have undertaken an extensive investigation of LMC and SMC star clusters based on HST data. We present photometry and astrometry of stars in 101 fields observed with the WFC/ACS, UVIS/WFC3 and NIR/WFC3 cameras. These fields comprise 113 star clusters. We provide differential-reddening maps and illustrate various scientific outcomes that arise from the early inspection of the photometric catalogs. In particular, we provide new insights on the extended main-sequence turn-off (eMSTO) phenomenon: i) We detected eMSTOs in two clusters, KMHK361 and NGC265, which had no previous evidence of multiple populations. This finding corroborates the conclusion that the eMSTO is a widespread phenomenon among clusters younger than ~2 Gyr. ii) The homogeneous color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of 19 LMC clusters reveal that the distribution of stars along the eMSTO depends on cluster age. iii) We discovered a new feature along the eMSTO of NGC1783, which consists of a distinct group of stars going on the red side of the eMSTO in CMDs composed of ultraviolet filters. Furthermore, we derived the proper motions of stars in the fields of view of clusters with multi-epoch images. Proper motions allowed us to separate the bulk of bright field stars from cluster members and investigate the internal kinematics of stellar populations in various LMC and SMC fields. As an example, we analyze the field around NGC346 to disentangle the motions of its stellar populations, including NGC364 and BS90, young and pre-MS stars in the star-forming region associated with NGC346, and young and old field stellar populations of the SMC. Based on these results and the fields around five additional clusters, we find that young SMC stars exhibit elongated proper-motion distributions that point toward the LMC, thus bringing new evidence for a kinematic connection between the LMC and SMC., Comment: 37 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

EAVN currently consists of 16 radio telescopes and three correlators located in China, Japan, and Korea, and is operated mainly at three frequency bands, 6.7, 22, and 43 GHz with the longest baseline length of 5078 km, resulting in the highest angular resolution of 0.28 milliarcseconds at 43 GHz. One of distinct capabilities of EAVN is multi-frequency simultaneous data reception at nine telescopes, which enable us to employ the frequency phase transfer technique to obtain better sensitivity at higher observing frequencies. EAVN started its open-use program in the second half of 2018, providing a total observing time of more than 1100 h in a year. EAVN fills geographical gap in global VLBI array, resulting in enabling us to conduct contiguous high-resolution VLBI observations. EAVN has produced various scientific accomplishments especially in observations toward active galactic nuclei, evolved stars, and star-forming regions. These activities motivate us to initiate launch of the ’Global VLBI Alliance’ to provide an opportunity of VLBI observation with the longest baselines on the earth. © 2022 by the authors. Here we present an open source Python-based Bayesian orbit retrieval code (Nii) that implements an automatic parallel tempering Markov chain Monte Carlo (APT-MCMC) strategy. Nii provides a module to simulate the observations of a space-based astrometry mission in the search for exoplanets, a signal extraction process for differential astrometric measurements using multiple reference stars, and an orbital parameter retrieval framework using APT-MCMC. We further verify the orbit retrieval ability of the code through two examples corresponding to a single-planet system and a dual-planet system. In both cases, efficient convergence on the posterior probability distribution can be achieved. Although this code specifically focuses on the orbital parameter retrieval problem of differential astrometry, Nii can also be widely used in other Bayesian analysis applications., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Mass ratios of widely separated, long-period, resolved binary stars can be directly estimated from the available data in major space astrometry catalogs, such as the ESA's Hipparcos and Gaia mission results. The method is based on the universal principle of inertial motion of the system's center of mass in the absence of external forces, and is independent of any assumptions about the physical parameters or stellar models. The application is limited by the precision of input astrometric data, the orbital period and distance to the system, and possible presence of other attractors in the vicinity, such as in triple systems. A generalization of this technique to triples is proposed, as well as approaches to estimation of uncertainties. The known long-period binary HIP 473 AB is discussed as an application example, for which a $m_2/m_1=0.996^{+0.026}_{-0.026}$ is obtained., Comment: accepted in a slightly reduced version in RevMexAA

The formation of giant planets is best studied through direct imaging by observing planets both during and after formation. Giant planets are expected to form either by core accretion, which is typically associated with low initial entropy (cold-start models) or by gravitational instability, which corresponds to a high initial entropy of the gas (hot-start models). Thus, constraining the initial entropy provides insight into the planet formation mechanism and determines the resultant brightness evolution. We find that, by observing planets in nearby moving groups of known age both through direct imaging and astrometry with Gaia, it will be possible to constrain the initial entropy of giant planets. We simulate a set of planetary systems in stars in nearby moving groups identified by BANYAN $\Sigma$ and assume a model for planet distribution consistent with radial velocity detections. We find that Gaia should be able to detect approximately 50% of planets in nearby moving groups greater than ~0.3 M$_\text{J}$. Using 5$\sigma$ contrast limits of current and future instruments, we calculate the flux uncertainty, and using models for the evolution of the planet brightness, we convert this to an initial entropy uncertainty. We find that, for future instruments such as MICADO and METIS on E-ELT and VIKiNG with VLTI, the entropy uncertainty is less than 0.5 $k_{B}$/baryon, showing that these instruments should be able to distinguish between hot and cold-start models., Comment: Final version, submitted to MNRAS

OB associations play an important role in Galactic evolution, though their origins and dynamics remain poorly studied, with only a small number of systems analysed in detail. In this paper, we revisit the existence and membership of the Cygnus OB associations. We find that of the historical OB associations only Cyg OB2 and OB3 stand out as real groups. We search for new OB stars using a combination of photometry, astrometry, evolutionary models, and an SED-fitting process, identifying 4680 probable OB stars with a reliability of >90 per cent. From this sample, we search for OB associations using a new and flexible clustering technique, identifying six new OB associations. Two of these are similar to the associations Cyg OB2 and OB3, though the others bear no relationship to any existing systems. We characterize the properties of the new associations, including their velocity dispersions and total stellar masses, all of which are consistent with typical values for OB associations. We search for evidence of expansion and find that all are expanding, albeit anisotropically, with stronger and more significant expansion in the direction of Galactic longitude. We also identify two large-scale (160 pc and 25 km s−1) kinematic expansion patterns across the Cygnus region, each including three of our new associations, and attribute this to the effects of feedback from a previous generation of stars. This work highlights the need to revisit the existence and membership of the historical OB associations, if they are to be used to study their properties and dynamics.

An overview is given of the research work by Prof. Gustav Wilhelm Ludwig von Struve (in Russian, Lyudvig Ottovich Struve), a representative of the world-famous Struve dynasty of scholars. His work pertains to astrometry, a subfield of positional astronomy, traditionally studied by the Struves. Ludwig von Struve’s works on lunar eclipses and binary stars (in particular, the systems of η Cassiopeia and Procyon), their proper motions and positional determinations, stand out for their extraordinary methodicalness and meticulous processing. The greatest value is attached to those works by Struve where he calculates (being one the first researchers to do so) the speed of rotation of the Milky Way, refines the constant of precession, and determines the coordinates of the solar apex. At the Kharkiv Astronomical Observatory, Struve determined the positions of reference stars for the asteroid Eros, carries out long-term observations of circumpolar stars, and contributed to compiling a catalog of 779 zodiacal stars. He also organized an expedition of Kharkiv astronomers to observe the total solar eclipse of 1914. Struve’s works have been distinguished twice by the Russian Astronomical Society.

Context. HR 8799 is a young planetary system composed of four planets and a double debris belt. Being the first multi-planetary system discovered with the direct imaging technique, it has been observed extensively since 1998. This wide baseline of astrometric measurements, counting over 50 observations in 20 years, permits a detailed orbital and dynamical analysis of the system. Aims. To explore the orbital parameters of the planets, their dynamical history, and the planet-to-disk interaction, we made follow-up observations of the system during the VLT/SPHERE guaranteed time observation program. We obtained 21 observations, most of them in favorable conditions. In addition, we observed HR 8799 with the instrument LUCI at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Methods. All the observations were reduced with state-of-the-art algorithms implemented to apply the spectral and angular differential imaging method. We re-reduced the SPHERE data obtained during the commissioning of the instrument and in three open-time programs to have homogeneous astrometry. The precise position of the four planets with respect to the host star was calculated by exploiting the fake negative companions method. We obtained an astrometric precision of the order of 6 mas in the worst case and 1 mas in the best case. To improve the orbital fitting, we also took into account all of the astrometric data available in the literature. From the photometric measurements obtained in different wavelengths, we estimated the masses of the planets following the evolutionary models. Results. We obtained updated parameters for the orbits with the assumption of coplanarity, relatively small eccentricities, and periods very close to the 2:1 resonance. We also refined the dynamical mass of each planet and the parallax of the system (24.49 +/- 0.07 mas), which overlap with the recent Gaia eDR3/DR3 estimate. Hydrodynamical simulations suggest that inward migration of the planets caused by the interaction with the disk might be responsible for the planets being locked in resonance. We chart the expected Galactic distribution of neutron stars and black holes. These compact remnants of dead stars -- the Galactic underworld -- are found to exhibit a fundamentally different distribution and structure to the visible Galaxy. Compared to the visible Galaxy, concentration into a thin flattened disk structure is much less evident with the scale height more than tripling to 1260 +- 30 pc. This difference arises from two primary causes. Firstly, the distribution is in part inherited from the integration over the evolving structure of the Galaxy itself (and hence the changing distribution of the parent stars). Secondly, an even larger effect arises from the natal kick received by the remnant at the event of its supernova birth. Due to this kick we find 30% of remnants have sufficient kinetic energy to entirely escape the Galactic potential (40% of neutron stars and 2% of black holes) leading to a Galactic mass loss integrated to the present day of ~ 0.4% of the stellar mass of the Galaxy. The black hole -- neutron star fraction increases near the Galactic centre: a consequence of smaller kick velocities in the former (the assumption made is that kick velocity is inversely proportional to mass). Our simulated remnant distribution yields probable distances of 19 pc and 21 pc to the nearest neutron star and black hole respectively, while our nearest probable magnetar lies at 4.2 kpc. Although the underworld only contains of order ~ 1% of the Galaxy's mass, observational signatures and physical traces of its population, such as microlensing, will become increasingly present in data ranging from gravitational wave detectors to high precision surveys from space missions such as Gaia., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

Context. The high quality of the Gaia mission data has allowed for studies of the internal kinematics of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to be undertaken in unprecedented detail, providing insights into the non-axisymmetric structure of its disc. Recent works by the Gaia Collaboration have already made use of the excellent proper motions of Gaia DR2 and Gaia EDR3 for a first analysis of this sort, but these were based on limited strategies aimed at distinguishing the LMC stars from the Milky Way foreground that did not use all the available information. In addition, these studies could not access the third component of the stellar motion, namely, the line-of-sight velocity – which has now become available via Gaia DR3 for a significant number of stars. Aims. Our aim is twofold: 1) to define and validate an improved, more efficient and adjustable selection strategy to distinguish the LMC stars from the Milky Way foreground; 2) to check the possible biases that assumed parameters or sample contamination from the Milky Way can introduce in analyses of the internal kinematics of the LMC based on Gaia data. Methods. Our selection was based on a supervised neural network classifier, using as much as of the Gaia DR3 data as possible. Based on this classifier, we selected three samples of candidate LMC stars with different degrees of completeness and purity. We validated these classification results using different test samples and we compared them with the results from the selection strategy used in the Gaia Collaboration papers, based only on the proper motions. We analysed the resulting velocity profiles and maps for the different LMC samples and we checked how these results change when we use the line-of-sight velocities that are available for a subset of stars. Results. We show that the contamination in the samples from Milky Way stars basically affects the results for the outskirts of the LMC. We also show that the analysis formalism used in absence of line-of-sight velocities does not bias the results for the kinematics in the inner disc. Here, for the first time, we performed a kinematic analysis of the LMC using samples with the full three dimensional (3D) velocity information from Gaia DR3. Conclusions. The detailed 2D and 3D kinematic analysis of the LMC internal dynamics demonstrate that: 1) the dynamics in the inner disc is mainly bar dominated; 2) the kinematics on the spiral arm overdensity seems to be dominated by an inward motion and a rotation that is faster than that of the disc in the part of the arm attached to the bar; 3) the contamination of Milky Way stars seem to dominate the outer parts of the disc and mainly affects old evolutionary phases; and 4) uncertainties on the assumed disc morphological parameters and line-of-sight velocity of the LMC can (in some cases) have significant effects on the results of the analysis.

Mars exhibited retrograde motions from January 4 to March 26 in 1491 CE. The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty has more than 40 records of observations with 38 lodge angles and 4 polar angles corresponding to the equatorial coordinates measured with an observing device called a small abridged armilla, as well as 34 angular separations of Mars with respect to neighboring stars estimated by eye. Accurate positions for Mars are calculated for comparison with the records, and we find a number of interesting aspects to those observations. A length unit of chi, used for reporting angular separations, is equivalent to 1 du or a Chinese angular unit. We find that the axis of the observing device might have been misaligned with the north celestial pole (NCP), and that some court astronomers might have rounded down their measurements while other astronomers might have rounded them up. In order to correct the misalignment, we apply a χ2 minimization scheme to the lodge and polar angles simultaneously, and find that the device was misaligned with the NCP by −0.°8 ± 0.°3 in elevation and −1.°3 ± 0.°3 in azimuth if the measurements had been rounded down, while it was misaligned with the NCP by −0.°4 ± 0.°3 in elevation and −2.°2 ± 0.°3 in azimuth if the measurements had been rounded up. The axis of the device was off from the NCP and aligned with a point below and to the west of the NCP. Since a magnetic compass was used for the alignment, the misalignment angle of the polar axis in azimuth is equal to the geomagnetic declination at Seoul in 1491 CE. The misalignment angles in azimuth we have obtained are in agreement with recent geomagnetic models within the 1–2 σ uncertainties of the models. Moreover, the single measurement error characterizing the observing device is estimated to be 0.°3.

The solar gravitational moments $J_{2n}$ are important astronomical quantities whose precise determination is relevant for solar physics, gravitational theory and high precision astrometry and celestial mechanics. Accordingly, we propose in the present work to calculate new values of $J_{2n}$ (for $n$=1,2,3,4 and 5) using recent two-dimensional rotation rates inferred from the high resolution SDO/HMI helioseismic data spanning the whole solar activity cycle 24. To this aim, a general integral equation relating $J_{2n}$ to the solar internal density and rotation is derived from the structure equations governing the equilibrium of slowly rotating stars. For comparison purpose, the calculations are also performed using rotation rates obtained from a recently improved analysis of SoHO/MDI heliseismic data for solar cycle 23. In agreement with earlier findings, the results confirmed the sensitivity of high order moments ($n>1$) to the radial and latitudinal distribution of rotation in the convective zone. The computed value of the quadrupole moment $J_{2}$ ($n=1$) is in accordance with recent measurements of the precession of Mercury's perihelion deduced from high precision ranging data of the MESSENGER spacecraft. The theoretical estimate of the related solar oblateness $\Delta_{\odot}$ is consistent with the most accurate space-based determinations, particularly the one from RHESSI/SAS., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The VLBI Global Observing System, which is the next generation of geodetic VLBI and is called VGOS, observes simultaneously at four frequency bands in the range 3.0--10.7 GHz (expected to be extended to 14 GHz). Because source structure changes with frequency, we aim to study the source position estimates from the observations of this new VLBI system. Based on an ideal point source model, simulations are made to determine the relation between the source positions as determined by VGOS observations and the locations of the radio emission at the four bands. We obtained the source positions as determined by VGOS observations as a function of the source positions at the four frequency bands for both group and phase delays. The results reveal that if the location of the radio emission at one band is offset with respect to that at the other bands, the position estimate can be shifted to the opposite direction and even by more than three times that offset. The VGOS source positions will be very variable with time and very imprecise in the sense of relating to the locations of the radio emission at the four bands, if the effects of source structure are not modeled. The image alignment over frequency is essential in order to model the effects of source structure in VGOS observations, which is the only way to mitigate these strong frequency-dependent impacts on VGOS source positions., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to A&A

As part of the International Asteroid Warning Network's observational exercises, we conducted a campaign to observe near-Earth asteroid 2019 XS around its close approach to Earth on 2021 November 9. The goal of the campaign was to characterize errors in the observation times reported to the Minor Planet Center, which become an increasingly important consideration as astrometric accuracy improves and more fast-moving asteroids are observed. As part of the exercise, a total of 957 astrometric observations of 2019 XS during the encounter were reported and subsequently were analyzed to obtain the corresponding residuals. While the timing errors are typically smaller than 1 s, the reported times appear to be negatively biased, i.e., they are generally earlier than they should be. We also compared the observer-provided position uncertainty with the cross-track residuals, which are independent of timing errors. Due to the current pandemic, the telescope has been currently deployed at the Yaoan Observation Station in China, starting the commissioning observation and a transient survey. This article presented a fully automatic data processing system for AST3-3 observations. The transient detection pipeline uses state-of-the-art image subtraction techniques optimized for GPU devices. Image reduction and transient photometry are accelerated by concurrent task methods. Our Python-based system allows for transient detection from wide-field data in a real-time and accurate way. A ResNet-based rotational-invariant neural network was employed to classify the transient candidates. We present the results of a search for optical candidates of Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in two dwarf galaxies: NGC 4861 and NGC 4449 using Hubble Space Telescope {\it HST} archival data. With a precise astrometry, we confirm that NGC 4861 X1 associated with an HII complex as reported by \cite{2014MNRAS.441.1841T} and we conclude that NGC 4861 X2 resides in a young star group with 400$\pm$80 M$\odot$. We also find that NGC 4449 X7 is associated with three optical candidates within an error radius of 0$\farcs$2 at the 90$\%$ confidence level. Absolute magnitudes (M$_{v}$) of these candidates are determined as $-$5.0 and $-$4.1. The age and mass values for the three candidates by using stellar evolutionary tracks are estimated as 40-50 Myr and $\sim$8 M$\odot$, respectively. The locations of optical candidates suggest possible association with a nearby group of stars. In addition, we analyzed the previously unused archival data of {\it XMM-Newton}, {\it Chandra} and {\it Swift} where the sources detected. The point spread function (PSF) reflects states of a telescope and plays an important role in development of data processing methods, such as PSF based astrometry, photometry and image restoration. However, for wide field small aperture telescopes (WFSATs), estimating PSF in any position of the whole field of view is hard, because aberrations induced by the optical system are quite complex and the signal to noise ratio of star images is often too low for PSF estimation. In this paper, we further develop our deep neural network (DNN) based PSF modelling method and show its applications in PSF estimation. During the telescope alignment and testing stage, our method collects system calibration data through modification of optical elements within engineering tolerances (tilting and decentering). Then we use these data to train a DNN (Tel--Net). After training, the Tel--Net can estimate PSF in any field of view from several discretely sampled star images. We use both simulated and experimental data to test performance of our method. The results show that the Tel--Net can successfully reconstruct PSFs of WFSATs of any states and in any positions of the FoV. Its results are significantly more precise than results obtained by the compared classic method - Inverse Distance Weight (IDW) interpolation. The estimation of the main parameters of star clusters is significant in astrophysical studies. The most important aspect of using the Gaia DR2 survey lies in the positions, parallax, and proper motions of cluster stars with homogeneous photometry that make the membership probability determine with high accuracy. In this respect, depending on Gaia DR2 database, an analysis of the open star cluster Melotte 72 is taking place here. It is located at a distance of 2345+/-108 pc with an age of 1.0+/-0.5 Gyr. In studying the radial density profile, the radius is found to be 5.0+/-0.15 arcmin. The reddening, the luminosity and mass functions, the total mass of the cluster, and the galactic geometrical distances (X_Sun, Y_Sun, Z_Sun), and the distance from the galactic center (R_g ) have been estimated as well. Starlight polarization serves one of the powerful tools to study magnetic fields in the Galactic interstellar medium. Heiles catalogue contains polarization information for 9286 stars, and is by far the biggest. This catalogue has been extensively used to study the magnetic fields. However, the distance parameters of the stars in this catalogue are from photometric observations, and very uncertain. We cross match Heiles catalogue with Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2), and identify 7613 stars using both angular separation and magnitude as constraints. We then obtain precise distances from Gaia DR2 for these stars. For more than 90% of the stars, the relative errors of the new distances are within 20%. Based on the new catalogue, we demonstrate how starlight polarization can probe Galactic magnetic fields.

Due to the high quality of Gaia DR2 stellar parallaxes and proper motions, we can study the Cygnus OB2 region up to G = 17.5 mag in circular region centred at (l, b) = (79.8°, +0.8°) of radius 1°. We detect four overdensities in the Vector Point Diagram. We apply a parametric model of the proper motion distribution and determine their mean proper motions, identify their members, and estimate their distances by analysing the parallaxes of the most probable members. We confirm that one of these regions is Cygnus OB2, whose mean proper motion is (μαcosδ, μδ) = (−2.71 ± 0.02, −4.24 ± 0.02) $\mathrm{mas\, yr}^{-1}$. We identify 2767 astrometric members at an estimated distance of 1683 ± 5 pc. A detailed comparison of these members with 333 photometric and spectroscopic Cygnus OB2 members shows that 33 stars of the last group are not members, 16 of them are O-B stars. 300 members in common lead to estimate a distance to the association of 1669 ± 6 pc. One of the remaining overdensities is the open cluster UCB585 for which we find eight more members, located at ∼1460 pc. The other two groups count 179 and 188 proper motion members which are distributed throughout the region and situated at a distance of ∼1280 pc. The estimated distances of these four groups suggest the existence of different substructures in the Cygnus OB2 region along the line of sight.

We use a modified method of the apparent motion parameters (AMP), in which the initial data from the Gaia DR2 catalog are not only high-precision coordinates, parallaxes, and radial velocities of the components of the studied wide binary stars, but are also their proper motions. The coincidence of the AMP orbits obtained both from the Gaia DR2 data and from the Pulkovo series from 1960–2019 leads to an orbit that is unambiguous in terms of an ascending node. The results for improving the orbits of such visual binaries of the Pulkovo research program as ADS 246, 2757, 10386, and 12169 are presented. Orbits (with periods of 1226, 1075, 4500, and 4900 years), orbital orientation parameters in the Galaxy coordinate frame, and the masses of these systems are obtained (0.59 ± 0.05, 1.7 ± 0.3, 1.7 ± 0.4, and $$2.25 \pm 0.5{{M}_{ \odot }}$$ ). It is shown that dense homogeneous series of ground-based observations, such as CCD observations with the 26-inch refractor of the Pulkovo Observatory, do not lose their relevance, serve as the basis for identifying the best solution based on both Gaia data and our own observations, and should be continued. It was also shown that the Thiele–Innes method is not suitable for determining the orbits of binary stars with a separation of more than 100 AU. Increasing our knowledge of the orbits and compositions of Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) is important for a better understanding of the evolution of the Solar System and of life. The detection of serendipitous NEO appearances among the millions of archived exposures from large astronomical imaging surveys can provide a contribution which is complementary to NEO surveys. Using the AstroWISE information system, this work aims to assess the detectability rate, the achieved recovery rate and the quality of astrometry when data mining the ESO archive for the OmegaCAM wide-field imager at the VST. We developed an automatic pipeline that searches for the NEO appearances inside the AstroWISE environment. Throughout the recovery process, the pipeline uses several public web-tools to identify possible images that overlap with the position of NEOs, and acquires information on the NEOs predicted position and other properties (e.g., magnitude, rate and direction of motion) at the time of observations. We have recovered 196 appearances of NEOs from a set of 968 appearances predicted to be recoverable. It includes appearances for three NEOs which were on the impact risk list at that point. These appearances were well before their discovery. The subsequent risk assessment using the extracted astrometry removes these NEOs from the risk list. We estimate a detectability rate of 0.05 per NEO at an SNR>3 for NEOs in the OmegaCAM archive. Our automatic recovery rates are 40% and 20% for NEOs on the risk list and the full list, respectively. The achieved astrometric and photometric accuracy is on average 0.12 arcsec and 0.1 mag. These results show the high potential of the archival imaging data of the ground-based wide-field surveys as useful instruments for the search, (p)recovery and characterization of NEOs. Gaia Data Release 2 (Gaia DR2) provides high accuracy and precision astrometric parameters (position, parallax, and proper motion) for more than 1 billion sources and is revolutionizing astrometry. For a fast-moving target such as an asteroid, with many stars in the field of view that are brighter than the faint limit magnitude of Gaia (21 Gmag), its measurement accuracy and precision can be greatly improved by taking advantage of Gaia reference stars. However, if we want to study the relative motions of cluster members, we could cross-match them in different epochs based on pixel positions. For both types of targets, the determination of optical field-angle distortion or called geometric distortion (GD) in this paper is important for image calibration especially when there are few reference stars to build a high-order plate model. For the former, the GD solution can be derived based on the astrometric catalogue’s position, while for the latter, a reference system called ‘master frame’ is constructed from these observations in pixel coordinates, and then the GD solution is derived. But, are the two GD solutions in agreement with each other? In this paper, two types of GD solutions, which are derived either from the Gaia DR2 catalogue or from the self-constructed master frame, are applied respectively for the observations taken by 1-m telescope at Yunnan Observatory. It is found that two GD solutions enable the precision to achieve a comparable level (∼10 mas) but their GD patterns are different. Synthetic distorted positions are generated for further investigation into the discrepancy between the two GD solutions. We aim to find the correlation and distinction between the two types of GD solutions and their applicability in high precision astrometry.

We present a spectroscopic characterisation and a new orbital solution for the binary system beta Cyg Aa/Ac (MCA 55), the primary component (beta Cyg A) of the well-known wide double star Albireo. By matching evolutionary tracks to the physical parameters of all three Albireo stars (beta Cyg Aa, Ac and B) as obtained from a spectroscopic analysis of TIGRE and IUE spectra, we confirm that they are likely coeval. Our final orbit solution is based on radial-velocity measurements taken over a baseline exceeding $120$ years, combined with relative astrometry from speckle interferometric observations and the absolute astrometry from the Hipparcos and Gaia missions. Our final orbit solution has a period of $121.65^{+3.34}_{-2.90}$ years with an eccentricity of $0.20^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$. Thanks to the inclusion of the absolute astrometry, we find a mass ratio of $q = 1.25^{+0.19}_{-0.17}$, and a total mass of $9.47_{-3.24}^{+5.88}$ M$_\odot$, indicating that the secondary (Ac) is the more massive of the pair. These results strongly suggest the presence of a fourth, unseen, member of the Albireo system. Given the current photometric data it is likely that beta Cyg A is itself a hierarchical triple. We also derive the systemic proper motion, line-of-sight velocity, and an orbital parallax of the beta Cyg A system, allowing us to quantitatively assess the hypothesis that Albireo A and B form a physically bound and genealogically connected system. During the 40-year photographic period of astronomical observations, the Baldone Astrophysical Observatory has accumulated more than 22,000 direct and 2,500 spectral images. In 2018, the digitization of direct astrophoto images with a resolution of 1200 dpi was completed. A processing methodology for obtaining the equatorial coordinates and photometric characteristics of the objects recorded in digitized astronegatives using the LINUX/MIDAS/ROMAFOT environment has been developed at the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Program package with success already works in seven observatories. A description of the operation of this program complex in stages and analysis of the obtained results is given. The steps describe the astrometric and photometric reduction process of digital records, as well as the reduction of the obtained instrumental magnitudes to the Johnson UBVR photometric system. The methodology of characteristic curve construction in the case of one exposure is described in detail. From all digitized astrophotoplates to date Approximately 2200 V film negatives, 300 U plates and several R, B plates were processed. As a result, catalogs of the positions and magnitudes of Pluto, 1848 asteroids and comets were obtained. 31 new positions were recorded in the VizieR Pluto catalog VI/155. It was found that the root-mean-square errors of the reduction of the measured coordinates to the equatorial coordinate system of the Tycho-2 catalog have values σ RA , DEC = 0.1-0.2”, and the root-mean-square errors of the reduction of instrumental photometric quantities m to the Johnson system of stellar UBVR-values are also in within σ UBVR = 0.1 − 0.2 m .

Aims. We produce a clean and well-characterised catalogue of objects within 100 pc of the Sun from the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We characterise the catalogue through comparisons to the full data release, external catalogues, and simulations. We carry out a first analysis of the science that is possible with this sample to demonstrate its potential and best practices for its use., Methods. Theselection of objects within 100 pc from the full catalogue used selected training sets, machine-learning procedures, astrometric quantities, and solution quality indicators to determine a probability that the astrometric solution is reliable. The training set construction exploited the astrometric data, quality flags, and external photometry. For all candidates we calculated distance posterior probability densities using Bayesian procedures and mock catalogues to define priors. Any object with reliable astrometry and a non-zero probability of being within 100 pc is included in the catalogue., Results. We have produced a catalogue of 331 312 objects that we estimate contains at least 92% of stars of stellar type M9 within 100 pc of the Sun. We estimate that 9% of the stars in this catalogue probably lie outside 100 pc, but when the distance probability function is used, a correct treatment of this contamination is possible. We produced luminosity functions with a high signal-to-noise ratio for the main-sequence stars, giants, and white dwarfs. We examined in detail the Hyades cluster, the white dwarf population, and wide-binary systems and produced candidate lists for all three samples. We detected local manifestations of several streams, superclusters, and halo objects, in which we identified 12 members of Gaia Enceladus. We present the first direct parallaxes of five objects in multiple systems within 10 pc of the Sun., Conclusions. We provide the community with a large, well-characterised catalogue of objects in the solar neighbourhood. This is a primary benchmark for measuring and understanding fundamental parameters and descriptive functions in astronomy.

We measure systemic proper motions for distant dwarf galaxies in the Local Group and investigate if these isolated galaxies have ever had an interaction with the Milky Way or M31. We cross-match photometry of isolated, star forming, dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, taken as part of the {\it Solo} survey, with astrometric measurements from Gaia Data Release 2. We find that NGC 6822, Leo A, IC 1613 and WLM have sufficient supergiants with reliable astrometry to derive proper motions. An additional three galaxies (Leo T, Eridanus 2 and Phoenix) are close enough that their proper motions have already been derived using red giant branch stars. Systematic errors in Gaia DR2 are significant for NGC 6822, IC 1613 and WLM. We explore the orbits for these galaxies, and conclude that Phoenix, Leo A and WLM are unlikely to have interacted with the Milky Way or M31, unless these large galaxies are very massive ($\gtrsim 1.6 \times 10^{12}\,M_\odot$). We rule out a past interaction of NGC 6822 with M31 at $\sim 99.99\%$ confidence, and find there is a $, 15 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Corrected Figure 4 and 5

Red supergiant (RSGs) are cool massive stars in a late phase of their evolution when the stellar envelope becomes fully convective. They are the brightest stars in the universe at infrared light and can be detected in galaxies far beyond the Local Group, allowing for accurate determination of chemical composition of galaxies. The study of their physical properties is extremely important for various phenomena including the final fate of massive stars as type II supernovae and gravitational wave progenitors. We explore the well-studied nearby young stellar cluster chi Per. Using Gaia EDR3 data, we find the distance of the cluster (d = 2.260+-0.020 kpc). We then investigate the variability of the convection-related surface structure as a source for parallax measurement uncertainty. We use state-of-the-art 3D radiative hydrodynamics simulations with CO5BOLD and the post-processing radiative transfer code OPTIM3D to compute intensity maps in the Gaia G photometric system. We calculate the variabiltiy, as a function of time, of the intensity-weighted mean from the synthetic maps. We then select the RSG stars in the cluster and compare their uncertainty on parallaxes to the predictions of photocentre displacements. The synthetic maps of RSG show extremely irregular and temporal variable surfaces due to convection-related dynamics. Consequentially, the position of the photo-center varies during Gaia measurements between 0.033 and 0.130 AU (up to 5% of the corresponding simulation stellar radius). We argue that the variability of the convection-related surface structures accounts for a substantial part of the Gaia EDR3 parallax error of the RSG sample. We suggest that the variation of the uncertainty on Gaia parallax could be exploited quantitatively using appropriate 3D simulations to extract, in a unique way, important information about the stellar dynamics and parameters of RSG stars., Press-release: https://www.mpa-garching.mpg.de/1054448/news20220530

The Extremely Large Telescope and the Thirty Meter Telescope will use state of the art multiconjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) systems to obtain the full D 4 advantage that their apertures can provide. However, to reach the full astrometric potential of these facilities for on-sky science requires understanding any residual astrometric distortions from these systems and find ways to measure and eliminate them. In this work, we use Gemini multiconjugate adaptive optic system (GeMS) observations of the core of NGC 6723 to better understand the on-sky astrometric performance of MCAO. We develop new methods to measure the astrometric distortion fields of the observing system, which probe the distortion at the highest possible spatial resolution. We also describe methods for examining the time-variable and static components of the astrometric distortion. When applied to the GeMS Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI) data, we are able to see the effect of the field rotator at the subpixel level, and we are able to empirically derive the distortion due to the optical design of GeMS/GSAOI. We argue that the resulting distortion maps are a valuable tool to measure and monitor the on-sky astrometric performance of future instrumentation. Our overall astrometry pipeline produces high-quality proper motions with an uncertainty floor of ∼45 μas yr−1. We measure the proper motion dispersion profile of NGC 6723 from a radius of ∼10″ out to ∼1′ based on ∼12,000 stars. We also produce a high-quality optical–near infrared color–magnitude diagram, which clearly shows the extreme horizontal branch and main-sequence knee of this cluster.

A stellar occultation occurs when a Solar System object passes in front of a star for an observer. This technique allows the determination of sizes and shapes of the occulting body with kilometer precision. Also, this technique constrains the occulting body's positions, albedos, densities, etc. In the context of the Galilean moons, these events can provide their best ground-based astrometry, with uncertainties in the order of 1 mas ($\sim$ 3 km at Jupiter's distance during opposition). We organized campaigns and successfully observed a stellar occultation by Io (JI) in 2021, one by Ganymede (JIII) in 2020, and one by Europa (JII) in 2019, with stations in North and South America. Also, we re-analyzed two previously published events, one by Europa in 2016 and another by Ganymede in 2017. Then, we fit the known 3D shape of the occulting satellite and determine its center of figure. That resulted in astrometric positions with uncertainties in the milliarcsecond level. The positions obtained from these stellar occultations can be used together with dynamical models to ensure highly accurate orbits of the Galilean moons. These orbits can help plan future space probes aiming at the Jovian system, such as JUICE by ESA and Europa Clipper by NASA, and allow more efficient planning of flyby maneuvers., 19 pages, 25 figures, Accepted on March 14, 2022 for publication in The Astronomical Journal

A new algorithm for autonomous long-term predictions realized in ground navigation receivers for ephemerides of GLONASS and GPS spacecraft is developed and analyzed. The algorithm can be applied to determinations of user’s coordinates, when it is impossible or difficult to receive the spacecraft ephemerides (for example, in conditions of a bad radio-visibility of the satellites). It is shown that the accuracy of the method exceeds similar characteristics of other known solutions. It is also shown that the coefficients, which take account of the solar pressure and are specific for each satellite, differ for different generations of spacecraft. Simultaneously with parameters of the satellite motion, the Earth’s polar coordinates can be determined with the accuracy of several arc milliseconds. Using the autonomous algorithm for predictions of spacecraft ephemerides significantly advances both the search for visible GLONASS and GPS satellites and the first determination of user’s coordinates after “cold” starts of receivers. Replenishment of the database of observations of distant satellites of planets is always useful, since the accuracy of the motion models and ephemeris depends not only on the accuracy of observations. Accuracy improves with increasing observation time. Therefore, observations made even with the same accuracy are in demand. Astrometric observations of two distant satellites of Jupiter were carried out at the Caucasian Mountain Observatory (CMO) of the Sternberg State Astronomical Institute, Moscow State University, on a new telescope with a mirror diameter of 2.5 m in 2017. As a result, six positions of the J6 satellite (Himalia) and 27 positions of the J8 satellite (Pasiphae) are obtained. The root-mean-square deviations from the ephemeris for all 33 observations of these two satellites were 0.085″ in right ascension and 0.064″ in declination. This accuracy corresponds to the current level of ground-based observations. Our refinements of the orbits for the MULTI-SAT ephemeris server based on all available observations showed that the weighted root-mean-square values of the angular deviations of the measured positions from those calculated for satellites J6 (Himalia) and J8 (Pasiphae) are 0.22″ . At the same time, the accuracy of the ephemeris is estimated with the MULTI-SAT server for 2017 at 0.008″ for J6 (Himalia) and 0.05″ for J8 (Pasiphae). New observational data will be useful for refining the motion models of distant satellites of Jupiter.

We analyzed astronomical data in the Tongmunhwigo, one of the history books containing diplomatic documents of the Joseon government (the last dynasty of Korea). This book contains predictions of solar and lunar eclipses for Seoul and Beijing with specific information such as magnitude and time, sent by the Qing government to the King of Joseon between 1721 to 1881. We analyzed the accuracy of the calculations performed by Qing’s astronomers, by comparing them with the results of modern calculations. Overall, the error value for time of the eclipses was less than ± 0.5 h ( ± 30 min) and the error value for magnitude was within ± 10 % . The results of this study will be helpful for understanding how accurate the predictions calculated by Qing astronomers were during the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries.

We present a photometric and astrometric analysis of the NGC 2158 cluster using Gaia DR2 and 2MASS data. The cluster age, color excess, intrinsic distance modulus and distance are calculated to be t = 2.240 ± 0.260 Gyr, E(B − V) = 0.420 ± 0.050 mag, (m − M)⨀ = 12.540 ± 0.130 mag and d⨀ = 3224 ± 200 pc respectively. The photometric analysis and light curve modelling of the proposed eclipsing binary member [NBN2015]78 is performed using the latest version of the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) code. The solutions show that the system is an over-contact binary with a secondary component filling its Roche lobe, with a mass ratio q = 0.262. The primary and the secondary components of the system consist of two late spectral types K1 and K2 respectively. The membership of [NBN2015]78 is discussed using two independent methods, and we find that [NBN2015]78 is an interloper and not a member of NGC 2158.

The precision of the Gaia data offers a unique opportunity to study the internal velocity field of star clusters. We develop and validate a forward-modelling method for the internal motions of stars in a cluster. The model allows an anisotropic velocity dispersion matrix and linear velocity gradient describing rotation and shear, combines radial velocities available for a subset of stars, and accounts for contamination from background sources via a mixture model. We apply the method to Gaia DR2 data of the Hyades cluster and its tidal tails, dividing and comparing the kinematics of stars within and beyond 10 pc, which is roughly the tidal radius of the cluster. While the velocity dispersion for the cluster is nearly isotropic, the velocity ellipsoid for the tails is clearly elongated with the major axis pointing towards the Galactic centre. We find positive and negative expansion at $\approx 2\sigma$ significance in Galactic azimuthal and vertical direction for the cluster but no rotation. The tidal tails are stretching in a direction tilted from the Galactic centre while equally contracting as the cluster in Galactic vertical direction. The tails have a shear (A) of $16.90\pm 0.92$ m/s/pc and a vorticity (B) of $-6.48\pm1.15$ m/s/pc, values distinct from the local Oort constants., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures + appendix

Telescopes with a small aperture and a wide field of view are widely used and play a significant role in large-scale state-of-the-art sky survey applications, such as transient detection and near-Earth object observations. However, owing to the specific defects caused by optical aberrations, the image quality and efficiency of source detection are affected. To achieve high-accuracy position measurements, an innovative technique is proposed. First, a large number of raw images are analysed using principal component analysis. Then, the effective point spread function is reconstructed, which reflects the state of the telescope and reveals the characteristics of the imaging process. Finally, based on the point spread function model, the centroids of star images are estimated iteratively. To test the efficiency and reliability of our algorithm, a large number of simulated images are produced, and a telescope with small aperture and wide field of view is utilized to acquire the raw images. The position measurement of sources is performed using our novel method and two other common methods on these data. Based on a comparison of the results, the improvement is investigated, and it is demonstrated that our proposed technique outperforms the others on position accuracy. We explore the limitations and potential gains that may be achieved by applying this technique to custom systems designed specifically for wide-field astronomical applications.

The Gaia space mission is crafting revolutionary astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic catalogues that will allow us to map our Galaxy, but only if we know the completeness of this Gaia-verse of catalogues: what stars does it contain and what stars is it missing? We argue that the completeness is driven by Gaia's spinning-and-precessing scanning law and will apply this principle to the Gaia-verse over this series. We take a first step by identifying the periods in time that did not contribute any measurements to Gaia DR2; these gaps create ribbons of incompleteness across the sky that will bias any study that ignores them, although some of these gaps may be filled in future data releases. Our first approach was to use the variable star photometry to identify the 94 gaps longer than 1% of a day. Our second approach was to predict the number of observations of every point on the sky, which in comparison to the reported number of detections revealed additional gaps in the astrometry and spectroscopy. Making these predictions required us to make the most precise, publicly-available determination of the Gaia scanning law. Using this scanning law, we further identified that most stars fainter than $G=22$ in DR2 have spurious magnitudes due to a miscalibration resulting from a thunderstorm over Madrid. Our list of gaps and precision scanning law will allow astronomers to know when Gaia's eye was truly on their binary star, exoplanet or microlensing event during the time period of the second data release., Comment: 17 pages, submitted to MNRAS. The low-metallicity, kinematically interesting dwarf stars studied by Stephens \& Boesgaard (2002, SB02) are re-examined using Gaia DR2 astrometry, and updated model atmospheres and atomic line data. New stellar parameters are determined based on the Gaia DR2 parallactic distances and Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database isochrones. These are in excellent agreement with spectroscopically determined stellar parameters for stars with [Fe/H]$>-2$; however, large disagreements are found for stars with [Fe/H]$\le-2$, with offsets as large as $\Delta$T$_{\rm eff}\sim+500$ K and $\Delta$log\,$g\sim+1.0$. A subset of six stars (test cases) are analysed ab initio using high resolution spectra with Keck HIRES and Gemini GRACES. This sub-sample is found to include two $\alpha$-challenged dwarf stars, suggestive of origins in a low mass, accreted dwarf galaxy. The orbital parameters for the entire SB02 sample are re-determined using \textit{Gaia} DR2 data. We find 11 stars that are dynamically coincident with the \textit{Gaia}-Sausage accretion event and another 17 with the \textit{Gaia}-Sequoia event in action space. Both associations include low-mass, metal-poor stars with isochrone ages older than 10 Gyr. Two dynamical subsets are identified within \textit{Gaia}-Sequoia. When these subsets are examined separately, a common knee in [$\alpha$/Fe] is found for the \textit{Gaia}-Sausage and low orbital energy \textit{Gaia}-Sequoia stars. A lower metallicity knee is tentatively identified in the \textit{Gaia}-Sequoia high orbital energy stars. If the metal-poor dwarf stars in these samples are true members of the \textit{Gaia}-Sausage and \textit{Gaia}-Sequoia events, then they present a unique opportunity to probe the earlier, more pristine, star formation histories of these systems.

Precision astrometry from the second Gaia data release has allowed astronomers to predict 5,787 microlensing events, with 528 of these having maximums within the extended Gaia mission (J2014.5 - J2026.5). Future analysis of the Gaia time-series astrometry of these events will, in some cases, lead to precise gravitational mass measurements of the lens. We find that 61% of events predicted during the extended Gaia mission with sources brighter than G = 18 are likely to be spurious, with the background source in these cases commonly being either a duplicate detection or a binary companion of the lens. We present quality cuts to identify these spurious events and a revised list of microlensing event candidates. Based on all published astrometric observations, we have determined the moon orbits for asteroids using a model of the fixed Keplerian orbit. We applied 5–114 observations for each moon. As a result, we have determined the orbits of 62 moons. All results, including the orbital parameters obtained, are presented in the tables that are provided as supplementary material, available online. These data can be used to calculate the ephemerides of the moons of the asteroids. Among the moons considered, 13 belong to asteroids of the main asteroid belt, two are the moons of Jupiter Trojan asteroids, while the rest are trans-Neptunian objects. Our results are in good agreement with the corresponding results published in the literature. We argue that reliable estimates of the accuracy for the ephemerides can be only made using parameter covariance matrices. These matrices that we have obtained are also given in the supporting information.

The Galactic aberration effect, also known as the secular aberration drift, is a consequence of the centripetal acceleration of the Solar System Barycenter in the circular orbit around the Galactic center. It causes distance-independent apparent proper motions (the amplitude is about 5 μ as · yr − 1 ) for extragalactic sources which were regarded as motionless before 21th century. As the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) has been greatly developed, and the ESA (European Space Agency) space mission Gaia has provided ultra high-precision astrometric data, the Galactic aberration effect has becoming important. It causes slow spin of the reference frame due to the non-uniform distribution of extragalactic sources. Therefore systematic corrections have to be applied to the Earth rotation parameters. For the precession rate, the correction is about 1 μ as · yr − 1 . For the very high accurate VLBI and Gaia reference frames, the Galactic aberration effect will introduce small distortion which is a crucial systematic effect for the link of the two reference frames.

In this study, we characterized 16 objects previously classified as faint or low-contrast Galactic open clusters (OCs). We employed parameters associated with the dynamical evolution of the OCs: the core (rc), tidal (rt) and half-mass (rhm) radii, age and crossing time (tcr). Relations among these parameters were exploited to draw some evolutionary connections. We also included 11 OCs with previous characterizations to provide wider coverage of the parameter space. The investigated sample spans a considerable range in age, log (t yr−1) ∼7.0–9.7, and Galactocentric distance, RG ∼ 6–11 kpc). Most of these OCs present solar metallicity. We employed Gaia Data Release 2 astrometry and photometry, and we selected member stars through a decontamination algorithm that explores the three-dimensional astrometric space (μα, μδ, ϖ) to assign membership likelihoods. Previous studies of most of these objects were based mostly on photometric information. All investigated OCs were proved to be real stellar concentrations. The relations among their parameters indicate a general disruption scenario in which OCs tend to be more concentrated as they evolve. Internal interactions sucessively drive OCs to develop more dynamically relaxed structures and make them less subject to mass loss due to tidal effects. Tidal radius tends to increase with RG in accordance with the strength of the Galactic tidal field. Besides, the correlation between rc and the dynamical ratio τdyn = age/tcr suggests two distinct evolutionary sequences, which may be a consequence of different initial formation conditions.

In the second paper of this series we perfected our method of linking high precision Hubble Space Telescope astrometry to the high-accuracy Gaia DR2 absolute reference system to overcome the limitations of relative astrometry with narrow-field cameras. Our test case here is the Y brown dwarf WISE J163940.83-684738.6, observed at different epochs spread over a 6-yr time baseline with the Infra-Red channel of the Wide Field Camera 3. We derived significantly improved astrometric parameters compared to previous determinations, finding: (mu_RAcosDc,mu_DC,parallax) = (577.21+/-0.24mas/yr,-3108.39+/-0.27mas/yr,210.4+/-1.8mas). We present the results of a detailed search for members of the Pal 5 tidal tail system in Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2). Tidal tails provide a sensitive method for measuring the current and past gravitational potential of their host galaxy as well as for testing predictions for the abundance of dark matter subhalos. The Pal 5 globular cluster and its associated tails are an excellent candidate for such analysis; however, only ~23 degrees of arc are currently known, with in particular the leading tail much shorter than the trailing. Using Gaia DR2 and its precise astrometry, we extend the known extent of the Pal 5 tail to ~30 degrees, 7 degrees of which are newly detected along the leading arm. The detected leading and trailing arms are symmetric in length and remain near constant width. This detection constrains proposed models in which the Galactic bar truncates Pal 5's leading arm. Follow-up spectroscopic observations are necessary to verify the candidate stream stars are consistent with the known tidal tails. As more advanced and complex survey telescopes are developed, the size and scale of data being captured grows at increasing rates. Across various domains, data compression through wavelets has enabled the reduction of data size and increase in computation efficiency. In this paper, we provide qualitative and quantitative tests of a new wavelet-based image compression method compared against the current standard for astronomical images. The analysis is improved by making use of state-of-the-art object detection systems to accurately measure the impact of the compression. We find that a combination of lossy wavelet-based methods, efficient quantization, and lossless dictionary compressors can preserve up to 98 per cent of astronomical objects at a 10:1 compression ratio. This significant reduction in file size also preserves astronomical object properties better than existing methods. These methods help further reduce future workloads for image-heavy processing pipelines.
