We present Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) UV line spectroscopy and integral-field unit (IFU) observations of the intra-group medium in Stephan's Quintet (SQ). SQ hosts a 30 kpc long shocked ridge triggered by a galaxy collision at a relative velocity of 1000 km/s, where large amounts of molecular gas coexist with a hot, X-ray emitting, plasma. COS spectroscopy at five positions sampling the diverse environments of the SQ intra-group medium reveals very broad (2000 km/s) Ly$\alpha$ line emission with complex line shapes. The Ly$\alpha$ line profiles are similar to or much broader than those of H$\beta$, [CII]$\lambda157.7\mu$m and CO~(1-0) emission. The extreme breadth of the Ly$\alpha$ emission, compared with H$\beta$, implies resonance scattering within the observed structure. Scattering indicates that the neutral gas of the intra-group medium is clumpy, with a significant surface covering factor. We observe significant variations in the Ly$\alpha$/H$\beta$ flux ratio between positions and velocity components. From the mean line ratio averaged over positions and velocities, we estimate the effective escape fraction of Ly$\alpha$ photons to be 10-30%. Remarkably, over more than four orders of magnitude in temperature, the powers radiated by X-rays, Ly$\alpha$, H$_2$, [CII] are comparable within a factor of a few, assuming that the ratio of the Ly$\alpha$ to H$_2$ fluxes over the whole shocked intra-group medium stay in line with those observed at those five positions. Both shocks and mixing layers could contribute to the energy dissipation associated with a turbulent energy cascade. We present a full data analysis of the pure-parallel Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging observations in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies Survey (BoRG[z9]) in Cycle 22. The medium-deep exposures with five HST/WFC3IR+UVIS filter bands from 79 independent sightlines (~370 arcmin^2) provide the least biased determination of number density for z>9 bright galaxies against cosmic variance. After a strict two-step selection for candidate galaxies, including dropout color and photometric redshift analyses, and revision of previous BoRG candidates, we identify one source at z~10 and two sources at z~9. The z~10 candidate shows evidence of line-of-sight lens magnification (mu~1.5), yet it appears surprisingly luminous (MUV ~ -22.6\pm0.3 mag), making it one of the brightest candidates at z > 8 known (~ 0.3 mag brighter than the z = 8.68 galaxy EGSY8p7, spectroscopically confirmed by Zitrin and collaborators). For z ~ 9 candidates, we include previous data points at fainter magnitudes and find that the data are well fitted by a Schechter luminosity function with alpha ~ -2.1, MUV ~ -21.5 mag, and log phi ~ -4.5 Mpc^-3mag^-1, for the first time without fixing any parameters. We present the first results and design from the redshift z~9-10 Brightest of the Reionizing Galaxies {\it Hubble Space Telescope} survey BoRG[z9-10], aimed at searching for intrinsically luminous unlensed galaxies during the first 700 Myr after the Big Bang. BoRG[z9-10] is the continuation of a multi-year pure-parallel near-IR and optical imaging campaign with the Wide Field Camera 3. The ongoing survey uses five filters, optimized for detecting the most distant objects and offering continuous wavelength coverage from {\lambda}=0.35{\mu}m to {\lambda}=1.7{\mu}m. We analyze the initial ~130 arcmin$^2$ of area over 28 independent lines of sight (~25% of the total planned) to search for z>7 galaxies using a combination of Lyman break and photometric redshift selections. From an effective comoving volume of (5-25) $times 10^5$ Mpc$^3$ for magnitudes brighter than $m_{AB}=26.5-24.0$ in the $H_{160}$-band respectively, we find five galaxy candidates at z~8.3-10 detected at high confidence (S/N>8), including a source at z~8.4 with mAB=24.5 (S/N~22), which, if confirmed, would be the brightest galaxy identified at such early times (z>8). In addition, BoRG[z9-10] data yield four galaxies with $7.3 \lesssim z \lesssim 8$. These new Lyman break galaxies with m$\lesssim26.5$ are ideal targets for follow-up observations from ground and space based observatories to help investigate the complex interplay between dark matter growth, galaxy assembly, and reionization., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ. 21 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

The circumgalactic medium (CGM) around galaxies is believed to record various forms of galaxy feedback and contain a significant portion of the "missing baryons" of individual dark matter halos. However, clear observational evidence for the existence of the hot CGM is still absent. We use intervening galaxies along 12 background AGNs as tracers to search for X-ray absorption lines produced in the corresponding CGM. Stacking Chandra grating observations with respect to galaxy groups and different luminosities of these intervening galaxies, we obtain spectra with signal-to-noise ratios of 46-72 per 20-mA spectral bin at the expected OVII Kalpha line. We find no detectable absorption lines of CVI, NVII, OVII, OVIII, or NeIX. The high spectral quality allows us to tightly constrain upper limits to the corresponding ionic column densities (in particular log[N(OVII)(cm^{-2})], 10 pages, 7 figures, and 5 tables. To probe the distribution and physical characteristics of interstellar gas at temperatures T ~ 3e5 K in the disk of the Milky Way, we have used the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to observe absorption lines of OVI toward 148 early-type stars situated at distances 1 kpc. After subtracting off a mild excess of OVI arising from the Local Bubble, combining our new results with earlier surveys of OVI, and eliminating stars that show conspicuous localized X-ray emission, we find an average OVI mid-plane density n_0 = 1.3e-8 cm^-3. The density decreases away from the plane of the Galaxy in a way that is consistent with an exponential scale height of 3.2 kpc at negative latitudes or 4.6 kpc at positive latitudes. Average volume densities of OVI along different sight lines exhibit a dispersion of about 0.26 dex, irrespective of the distances to the target stars. This indicates that OVI does not arise in randomly situated clouds of a fixed size and density, but instead is distributed in regions that have a very broad range of column densities, with the more strongly absorbing clouds having a lower space density. Line widths and centroid velocities are much larger than those expected from differential Galactic rotation, but they are nevertheless correlated with distance and N(OVI), which reinforces our picture of a diverse population of hot plasma regions that are ubiquitous over the entire Galactic disk. The velocity extremes of the OVI profiles show a loose correlation with those of very strong lines of less ionized species, supporting a picture of a turbulent, multiphase medium churned by shock-heated gas from multiple supernova explosions., Accepted for publication in ApJS. Long-duration Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) allow us to pinpoint and study star-forming galaxies in the early universe, thanks to their orders of magnitude brighter peak luminosities compared to other astrophysical sources, and their association with deaths of massive stars. We present Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 detections of three Swift GRB host galaxies lying at redshifts $z = 5.913$ (GRB 130606A), $z = 6.295$ (GRB 050904), and $z = 6.327$ (GRB 140515A) in the F140W (wide-$JH$ band, $\lambda_{\rm{obs}}\sim1.4\,\mu m$) filter. The hosts have magnitudes (corrected for Galactic extinction) of $m_{\rm{\lambda_{obs},AB}}= 26.34^{+0.14}_{-0.16}, 27.56^{+0.18}_{-0.22},$ and $28.30^{+0.25}_{-0.33}$ respectively. In all three cases the probability of chance coincidence of lower redshift galaxies is $\lesssim2\,\%$, indicating that the detected galaxies are most likely the GRB hosts. These are the first detections of high redshift ($z > 5$) GRB host galaxies in emission. The galaxies have luminosities in the range $0.1-0.6\,L^{*}_{z=6}$ (with $M_{1600}^{*}=-20.95\pm0.12$), and half-light radii in the range $0.6-0.9\,\rm{kpc}$. Both their half-light radii and luminosities are consistent with existing samples of Lyman-break galaxies at $z\sim6$. Spectroscopic analysis of the GRB afterglows indicate low metallicities ($[\rm{M/H}]\lesssim-1$) and low dust extinction ($A_{\rm{V}}\lesssim0.1$) along the line of sight. Using stellar population synthesis models, we explore the implications of each galaxy's luminosity for its possible star formation history, and consider the potential for emission-line metallicity determination with the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope., Comment: Published in ApJ

To gain insight into four highly ionized high-velocity clouds (HVCs) discovered by Sembach et al. (1999), we have analyzed data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) for the PKS 2155-304 and Mrk 509 sight lines. We measure strong absorption in OVI and column densities of multiple ionization stages of silicon (SiII/III/IV) and carbon (CII/III/IV). We interpret this ionization pattern as a multiphase medium that contains both collisionally ionized and photoionized gas. Toward PKS 2155-304, for HVCs at -140 and -270 km/s, respectively, we measure logN(OVI)=13.80+/-0.03 and log N(OVI)=13.56+/-0.06; from Lyman series absorption, we find log N(HI)=16.37^(+0.22)_(-0.14) and 15.23^(+0.38)_(-0.22). The presence of high-velocity OVI spread over a broad (100 km/s) profile, together with large amounts of low-ionization species, is difficult to reconcile with the low densities, n=5x10^(-6) cm^(-3), in the collisional/photoionization models of Nicastro et al. (2002), although the HVCs show a similar relation in N(SiIV)/N(CIV) versus N(CII)/N(CIV) as high-z intergalactic clouds. Our results suggest that the high-velocity OVI in these absorbers do not necessarily trace the WHIM, but instead may trace HVCs with low total hydrogen column density. We propose that the broad high-velocity OVI absorption arises from shock ionization, at bowshock interfaces produced from infalling clumps of gas with velocity shear. The similar ratios of high ions for HVC Complex C and these highly ionized HVCs suggest a common production mechanism in the Galactic halo., Comment: 38 pages, including 10 figures. FUSE spectra of 100 extragalactic objects are analyzed to obtain measures of O VI absorption along paths through the Milky Way thick disk/halo. Strong O VI absorption over the approximate velocity range from -100 to 100 km/s reveals a widespread but highly irregular distribution of thick disk O VI, implying the existence of substantial amounts of hot gas with T ~ 3x10^5 K in the Milky Way halo. Large irregularities in the distribution of the absorbing gas are found to be similar over angular scales extending from less than one to 180 degrees, indicating a considerable amount of small and large scale structure in the gas. The overall distribution of Galactic O VI is not well described by a symmetrical plane-parallel layer of patchy O VI absorption. The simplest departure from such a model that provides a reasonable fit to the observations is a plane-parallel patchy absorbing layer with a scale height of 2.3 kpc, and a 0.25 dex excess of O VI in the northern Galactic polar region. The O VI absorption has a Doppler parameter b = 30 to 99 km/s, with an average value of 60 km/s . Thermal broadening alone cannot explain the large observed profile widths. The average O VI absorption velocities toward high latitude objects range from -46 to 82 km/s, with a sample average of 0 km/s and a standard deviation of 21 km/s. O VI associated with the thick disk moves both toward and away from the plane with roughly equal frequency. A combination of models involving the radiative cooling of hot fountain gas, the cooling of supernova bubbles in the halo, and the turbulent mixing of warm and hot halo gases is required to explain the presence of O VI and other highly ionized atoms found in the halo. We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of the O VI λλ1031.926, 1037.617 absorption lines associated with gas in and near the Milky Way, as detected in the spectra of a sample of 100 extragalactic targets and two distant halo stars. We combine data from several FUSE Science Team programs with guest observer data that were public before 2002 May 1. The sight lines cover most of the sky above Galactic latitude |b| > 25°—at lower latitude the ultraviolet extinction is usually too large for extragalactic observations. We describe the details of the calibration, alignment in velocity, continuum fitting, and manner in which several contaminants were removed—Galactic H2, absorption intrinsic to the background target and intergalactic Lyβ lines. This decontamination was done very carefully, and in several sight lines very subtle problems were found. We searched for O VI absorption in the velocity range -1200 to 1200 km s-1. With a few exceptions, we only find O VI in the velocity range -400 to 400 km s-1; the exceptions may be intergalactic O VI. In this paper we analyze the O VI associated with the Milky Way (and possibly with the Local Group). We discuss the separation of the observed O VI absorption into components associated with the Milky Way halo and components at high velocity, which are probably located in the neighborhood of the Milky Way. We describe the measurements of equivalent width and column density, and we analyze the different contributions to the errors. We conclude that low-velocity Galactic O VI absorption occurs along all sight lines—the few nondetections only occur in noisy spectra. We further show that high-velocity O VI is very common, having equivalent width >65 mA in 50% of the sight lines and equivalent width >30 mA in 70% of the high-quality sight lines. The central velocities of high-velocity O VI components range from |vLSR| = 100 to 330 km s-1; there is no correlation between velocity and absorption strength. We discuss the possibilities for studying O VI absorption associated with Local Group galaxies and conclude that O VI is probably detected in M31 and M33. We limit the extent of an O VI halo around M33 to be 200 km s-1 occurs along all sight lines in the region l = 180°-300°, b > 20°.

Observations obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) have been used to determine the column densities of D I, O I, and N I along seven sight lines that probe the local interstellar medium (LISM) at distances from 37 pc to 179 pc. Five of the sight lines are within the Local Bubble and two penetrate the surrounding H I wall. Reliable values of N(H I) were determined for five of the sight lines from HST data, IUE data, and published EUVE measurements. The weighted mean of D I/H I for these five sight lines is (1.52 +/- 0.08) x10-5 (1 sigma uncertainty in the mean). It is likely that the D I/H I ratio in the Local Bubble has a single value. The D I/O I ratio for the five sight lines within the Local Bubble is (3.76 +/- 0.20) x10-2. It is likely that the O I column densities can serve as a proxy for H I in the Local Bubble. The weighted mean for O I/H I for the seven FUSE sight lines is (3.03 +/-0.21) x10-4, comparable to the weighted mean (3.43 +/- 0.15) x10-4 reported for 13 sight lines probing larger distances and higher column densities (Meyer et al. 1998, Meyer 2001). The FUSE weighted mean of N I/H I for the five sight lines is half that reported by Meyer et al. (1997) for seven sight lines with larger distances and higher column densities. This result combined with the variability of O I/N I (six sight lines) indicates that at the low column densities found in the LISM, nitrogen ionization balance is important. Thus, unlike O I, N I cannot be used as a proxy for H I or as a metallicity indicator in the LISM. We report on the observed properties of the plasma revealed through high signal-to-noise (S/N) observations of 54 intervening O VI absorption systems containing 85 O VI and 133 H I components in a blind survey of 14 QSOs observed at ~18 km s-1 resolution with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) over a redshift path of 3.52 at z < 0.5. Simple systems with one or two H I components and one O VI component comprise 50% of the systems. For a sample of 45 well-aligned absorption components where the temperature can be estimated, we find evidence for cool photoionized gas in 31 (69%) and warm gas (6 > log T > 5) in 14 (31%) of the components. The total hydrogen content of the 14 warm components can be estimated from the temperature and the measured value of log N(H I). The very large implied values of log N(H) range from 18.38 to 20.38 with a median of 19.35. The metallicity, [O/H], in the 6 warm components with log T > 5.45 ranges from -1.93 to 0.03 with a median value of -1.0 dex. Ground-based galaxy redshift studies reveal that most of the absorbers we detect sample gas in the IGM extending 200 to 600 kpc beyond the closest associated galaxy. We estimate the warm aligned O VI absorbers contain (4.1+/-1.1)% of the baryons at low z. We have used moderate-resolution (FWHM ≈ 25 km s-1) spectra of active galactic nuclei and QSOs observed by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer to make the first definitive measurements of absorption by hot gas in high-velocity clouds (HVCs) at large distances from the Galactic plane. Seven of the 11 sight lines studied exhibit high-velocity ( > 100 km s-1) O VI λ1031.93 absorption with log N(O ) ≈ 13.79-14.62. High-velocity O VI absorption is detected in the distant gas of H I HVC complex C, the Magellanic Stream, several HVCs believed to be in the Local Group, and the outer Galaxy. The fraction of O VI in HVCs along the seven sight lines containing high-velocity O VI averages ~30%, with a full range of ~10%-70%. The O VI detections imply that hot (T ~ 3 × 105 K), collisionally ionized gas is an important constituent of the HVCs since O VI is difficult to produce by photoionization unless the path lengths over which the absorption occurs are very large (>100 kpc). The association of O VI with H I HVCs in many cases suggests that the O VI may be produced at interfaces or mixing layers between the H I clouds and hot, low-density gas in the Galactic corona or Local Group. Alternatively, the O VI may originate within cooling regions of hot gas clouds as they are accreted onto the Galaxy.

We present far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 obtained in 1999 November with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Our data span the observed wavelength range 915-1185 A at a resolution of ~20 km/s. The spectrum shows a blue continuum, broad OVI 1032,1038 emission, and a broad CIII 977 emission line. Superposed on these emission components, we resolve associated absorption lines of OVI 1032,1038, CIII 977, and Lyman lines through Lzeta. Seven distinct kinematic components are present, spanning a velocity range of -440 to +170 km/s relative to the systemic velocity. The absorption is clustered in two groups, one centered at -370m km/s and another at the systemic velocity. The blue-shifted cluster may be associated with the extended line emission visible in deep images of Mrk 509 obtained by Phillips et al. Although several components appear to be saturated, they are not black at their centers. Partial covering or scattering permits ~7% of the broad-line or continuum flux to be unaffected by absorption. Of the multiple components, only one has the same ionization state and column density as highly ionized gas that produces the OVII and OVIII ionization edges in X-ray spectra of Mrk 509. We have obtained moderate resolution spectra of the bright QSO H1821+643 (z=0.297) in the wavelength interval 990-1185A with FUSE. Strong, complex OVI 1032 and FeII 1145 absorption arising in gas above several spiral arms and the outer warp of our Galaxy is detected. We have identified absorption by a high negative-velocity (-215 km/s) component of OVI, which corresponds to the limiting velocity of v_LSR = 190+/-20 km/s for Milky Way gas along this line of sight, assuming corotation of disk and halo gas and a flat rotation curve for the outer galaxy. We report the detection of four absorbers in the intergalactic medium, through detections of Lyman beta at z=0.2454 and z=0.1213, Lyman delta, epsilon, zeta in a system at z=0.2249, CIII 977 at z=0.1705, and OVI 1032 at z=0.12137. The FUSE data show that the Lyman absorbers at z=0.225 are composed of 2 components separated by 70 km/s. Finally, we have observed associated absorption from OIII 832, OIV 787, and possibly SV 786 at the redshift of the QSO (z= 0.297). NeVIII 770,780 is not detected in this associated system. When combined with the previous detection of associated OVI 1032 (Savage et al, 1998), we conclude that this system is a multiphase absorber, and we discuss the origin of the absorption in this context.

The Lyman and Werner band systems of deuterated molecular hydrogen (HD) occur in the far UV range below 1200 A. The high sensitivity of the FUSE mission can give access, at moderate resolution, to hot stars shining through translucent clouds, in the hope of observing molecular cores in which deuterium is essentially in the form of HD. Thus, the measurement of the HD/H2 ratio may become a new powerful tool to evaluate the deuterium abundance, D/H, in the interstellar medium. We report here on the detection of HD toward the high extinction star HD 73882 [E(B-V)=0.72]. A preliminary analysis is presented.

The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellite observes light in the far-ultraviolet spectral region, 905 - 1187 A with high spectral resolution. The instrument consists of four coaligned prime-focus telescopes and Rowland spectrographs with microchannel plate detectors. Two of the telescope channels use Al:LiF coatings for optimum reflectivity from approximately 1000 to 1187 A and the other two use SiC coatings for optimized throughput between 905 and 1105 A. The gratings are holographically ruled to largely correct for astigmatism and to minimize scattered light. The microchannel plate detectors have KBr photocathodes and use photon counting to achieve good quantum efficiency with low background signal. The sensitivity is sufficient to examine reddened lines of sight within the Milky Way as well as active galactic nuclei and QSOs for absorption line studies of both Milky Way and extra-galactic gas clouds. This spectral region contains a number of key scientific diagnostics, including O VI, H I, D I and the strong electronic transitions of H2 and HD.

As part of an extensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign, the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite was used to observe the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 390.3 during the period 1994 December 31-1996 March 5. Spectra were obtained every 6-10 days. The UV continuum varied by a factor of 7 through the campaign, while the broad emission lines varied by factors of 2-5. Unlike previously monitored Seyfert 1 galaxies, in which the X-ray continuum generally varies with a larger amplitude than the UV, in 3C 390.3 the UV continuum light curve is similar in both amplitude and shape to the X-ray light curve observed by ROSAT. The UV broad emission-line variability lags that of the UV continuum by 35-70 days for Lyα and C IV, values larger than those found for Seyfert 1 galaxies of comparable UV luminosity. These lags are also larger than those found for the Balmer lines in 3C 390.3 over the same period. The red and blue wings of C IV and Lyα vary in phase, suggesting that radial motion does not dominate the kinematics of the UV line-emitting gas. Comparison with archival data provides evidence for velocity-dependent changes in the Lyα and C IV line profiles, indicating evolution in the detailed properties and/or distribution of the broad-line emitting gas.

PUBLISHED, From 1996 June 10 to July 29, the International Ultraviolet Explorer monitored the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 continuously in an attempt to measure time delays between the continuum and emission-line fluxes. From the time delays, one can estimate the size of the region dominating the production of the UV emission lines in this source. We find the strong UV emission lines to respond to continuum variations with time delays of about 2.d3-3.d1 for Ly alpha , 2.d7 for C IV lambda 1549, 1.d9-2.d4 for N V lambda 1240, 1.d7-1.d8 for Si IV lambda 1400, and 0.d7-1.d0 for He II lambda 1640. The most remarkable result, however, is the detection of apparent time delays between the different UV continuum bands. With respect to the UV continuum flux at 1315 A, the flux at 1485 A, 1740 A, and 1825 A lags with time delays of 0.d21, 0.d35, and 0.d28, respectively. Determination of the significance of this detection is somewhat problematic since it depends on accurate estimation of the uncertainties in the lag measurements, which are difficult to assess. We attempt to estimate the uncertainties in the time delays through Monte Carlo simulations, and these yield estimates of ~0.d07 for the 1 sigma uncertainties in the interband continuum time delays. Possible explanations for the delays include the existence of a continuum-flux reprocessing region close to the central source and/or a contamination of the continuum flux with a very broad time-delayed emission feature such as the Balmer continuum or merged Fe II multiplets.

Cosmological simulations of galaxy formation often rely on prescriptions for star formation and feedback that depend on halo properties such as halo mass, central over-density, and virial temperature. In this paper we address the convergence of individual halo properties, based on their number of particles N, focusing in particular on the mass of halos near the resolution limit of a simulation. While it has been established that the halo mass function is sampled on average down to N~30 particles, we show that individual halo properties exhibit significant scatter, and some systematic biases, as one approaches the resolution limit. We carry out a series of cosmological simulations using the Gadget2 and Enzo codes with N_p=64^3 to N_p=1024^3 total particles, keeping the same large-scale structure in the simulation box. We consider boxes from l_{box} = 8 Mpc/h to l_{box} = 512 Mpc/h to probe different halo masses and formation redshifts. We cross-identify dark matter halos in boxes at different resolutions and measure the scatter in their properties. The uncertainty in the mass of single halos depends on the number of particles (scaling approximately as N^{-1/3}), but the rarer the density peak, the more robust its identification. The virial radius of halos is very stable and can be measured without bias for halos with N>30. In contrast, the average density within a sphere containing 25% of the total halo mass is severely underestimated (by more than a factor 2) and the halo spin is moderately overestimated for N100 particles and common halos (~1sigma peaks) with N>400 particles to avoid excessive numerical noise and possible systematic biases in the results., 25 pages, 9 figures, ApJ accepted

We present the first results on the search for very bright (M_AB -21) galaxies at redshift z~8 from the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) survey. BoRG is a Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 pure-parallel survey that is obtaining images on random lines of sight at high Galactic latitudes in four filters (F606W, F098M, F125W, F160W), with integration times optimized to identify galaxies at z>7.5 as F098M-dropouts. We discuss here results from a search area of approximately 130 arcmin^2 over 23 BoRG fields, complemented by six other pure-parallel WFC3 fields with similar filters. This new search area is more than two times wider than previous WFC3 observations at z~8. We identify four F098M-dropout candidates with high statistical confidence (detected at greater than 8sigma confidence in F125W). These sources are among the brightest candidates currently known at z~8 and approximately ten times brighter than the z=8.56 galaxy UDFy-38135539. They thus represent ideal targets for spectroscopic followup observations and could potentially lead to a redshift record, as our color selection includes objects up to z~9. However, the expected contamination rate of our sample is about 30% higher than typical searches for dropout galaxies in legacy fields, such as the GOODS and HUDF, where deeper data and additional optical filters are available to reject contaminants., minor changes, ApJL accepted

We investigate through hydrodynamic simulations the destruction of newly-formed dust grains by sputtering in the reverse shocks of supernova remnants. Using an idealized setup of a planar shock impacting a dense, spherical clump, we implant a population of Lagrangian particles into the clump to represent a distribution of dust grains in size and composition. We then post-process the simulation output to calculate the grain sputtering for a variety of species and size distributions. We explore the parameter space appropriate for this problem by altering the over-density of the ejecta clumps and the speed of the reverse shocks. Since radiative cooling could lower the temperature of the medium in which the dust is embedded and potentially protect the dust by slowing or halting grain sputtering, we study the effects of different cooling methods over the time scale of the simulations. In general, our results indicate that grains with radii less than 0.1 microns are sputtered to much smaller radii and often destroyed completely, while larger grains survive their interaction with the reverse shock. We also find that, for high ejecta densities, the percentage of dust that survives is strongly dependent on the relative velocity between the clump and the reverse shock, causing up to 50% more destruction for the highest velocity shocks. The fraction of dust destroyed varies widely across grain species, ranging from total destruction of Al2O3 grains to minimal destruction of Fe grains (only 20% destruction in the most extreme cases). C and SiO2 grains show moderate to strong sputtering as well, with 38% and 80% mass loss. The observed intergalactic OVI absorbers at z>0 have been regarded as a significant reservoir of the ``missing baryons''. However, to fully understand how these absorbers contribute to the baryon inventory, it is crucial to determine whether the systems are collisionally ionized or photoionized (or both). Using the identified intergalactic OVI absorbers as tracers, we search for the corresponding X-ray absorption lines, which are useful for finding the missing baryons and for revealing the nature of the OVI absorbers. Stacking the Chandra grating spectra along six AGN sight lines, we obtain three spectra with signal-to-noise ratios of 32, 28, and 10 per 12.5 mA spectral bin around the expected OVII Kalpha wavelength. These spectra correspond to OVI absorbers with various dynamic properties. We find no detectable NeIX, OVII, OVIII, NVII, or CVI absorption lines in the spectra, but the high counting statistics allows us to obtain firm upper limits on the corresponding ionic column densities (in particular N(OVII), 10 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables; minor changes following referee's comments; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We analyze HST and FUSE ultraviolet spectroscopic data for eleven sight lines passing through the infalling high velocity cloud (HVC) Complex C. These sight lines pass through regions with HI column densities ranging from N(HI) = 10^(18.1) to 10^(20.1). From [OI/HI] abundances, we find that Complex C metallicities range from 0.09 to 0.29 Z_solar, with a column density weighted mean of 0.13 Z_solar. Nitrogen (NI) is underabundant by factors of (0.01-0.07) (N/H)_solar, significantly less than oxygen relative to solar abundances. This pattern suggests nucleosynthetic enrichment by Type II SNe, consistent with an origin in the Galactic fountain or infalling gas produced in winds from Local Group galaxies. The range of metallicity and its possible (2 sigma) dependence on N(HI) could indicate some mixing of primordial material with enriched gas from the Milky Way, but the mixing mechanism is unclear. We also investigate the significant highly ionized component of Complex C, detected in CIV, SiIV, and OVI, but not in NV. High-ion column density ratios show little variance and are consistent with shock ionization or ionization at interfaces between Complex C and a hotter surrounding medium. Evidence for the former mechanism is seen in the Mrk 876 line profiles, where the offset in line centroids between low and high ions suggests a decelerating bowshock., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We present the far-UV spectrum of the quasar HS1700+6416 taken with FUSE. This QSO provides the second line of sight with the HeII absorption resolved into a Ly alpha forest structure. Since HS1700+6416 is slightly less redshifted (z=2.72) than HE2347-4342, we only probe the post-reionization phase of HeII, seen in the evolution of the HeII opacity, which is consistent with a simple power law. The HeII/HI ratio eta is estimated using a line profile-fitting procedure and an apparent optical depth approach, respectively. The expected metal line absorption in the far-UV is taken into account as well as molecular absorption of galactic H_2. About 27% of the eta values are affected by metal line absorption. In order to investigate the applicability of the analysis methods, we create simple artificial spectra based on the statistical properties of the HI Ly alpha forest. The analysis of the artificial data demonstrates that the apparent optical depth method as well as the line profile-fitting procedure lead to confident results for restricted data samples only (12.0 < log N(HI) < 13.0). The reasons are saturation in the case of the apparent optical depth and thermal line widths in the case of the profile fits. Furthermore, applying the methods to the unrestricted data set may mimic a correlation between eta and the strength of the HI absorption. For the restricted data samples a scatter of 10 - 15% in eta would be expected even if the underlying value is constant. The observed scatter is significantly larger than expected, indicating that the intergalactic radiation background is indeed fluctuating. We use spectroscopic data from HST and FUSE to study the wide range of ionization states of the "highly ionized high-velocity clouds". Studied extensively in OVI absorption, these clouds are usually assumed to be infalling gas in the Galactic halo at distances less than 50 kpc. An alternative model attributes the OVI (and OVII X-ray absorption) to cosmological structures of low-density, shock-heated intergalactic gas, distributed over 1-3 Mpc surrounding the Milky Way. The latter interpretation is unlikely, owing to the enormous required mass of gas (4x10^12 M_solar). Our detection, in 9 of 12 sight lines, of low ionization stages (CII/III/IV; SiII/III/IV) at similar high velocities as OVI requires gas densities far above that (n_H=5x10^-6 cm^-3) associated with the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). These HVCs are probably cooling, multiphase gas in the Galactic halo, bow-shocks and interfaces between clouds falling through a hot, rotating gaseous halo. The velocity segregation of these HVCs in Galactic coordinates is consistent with a pattern in which infalling clouds reflect the sense of Galactic rotation, with peculiar velocities superposed., Comment: 26 pages, 1 color figure. We report on the first observations of variations in UV (intrinsic EUV 330 A) flux of the luminous QSO HS 1700+6416 (z=2.72) over a decade. The amplitude of variations increases from +/-0.1 mag in the optical (R) to up to a factor of 3 at 1250 A. This is apparently an extension of the increase in amplitude of variations towards shorter wavelengths observed with IUE in low z AGN (Paltani & Courvoisier, 1996) to the EUV. The time-scale for variations with the largest amplitudes is >= 1/2 yr to years. We obtained high-resolution VLT and FUSE spectra of the quasar HE2347-4342 to study the properties of the intergalactic medium between redshifts z=2.0-2.9. The high-quality optical spectrum allows us to identify approximately 850 HeII absorption components with column densities between N~5X10^11 and $ 10^18 cm^-2. The reprocessed FUSE spectrum extends the wavelength coverage of the HeII absorption down to an observed wavelength of 920 A. Approximately 1400 HeII absorption components are identified, including 917 HeII Ly-alpha systems and some of their HeII Ly-beta, Ly-gamma, and Ly-delta counterparts. The ionization structure of HeII is complex, with approximately 90 components that are not detected in the hydrogen spectrum. These components may represent the effect of soft ionizing sources. The ratio Eta=N(HeII)/N(HI) varies approximately from unity to more than a thousand, with a median value of 62 and a distribution consistent with the intrinsic spectral indices of quasars. This suggests that the dominant ionizing field is from the accumulated quasar radiation, with contributions from other soft sources such as star-forming regions and obscured AGN, which do not ionize helium. We find an evolution in Eta toward smaller values at lower redshift, with the gradual disappearance of soft components. At redshifts z>2.7, the large but finite increase in the HeII opacity, Tau=5+/-1, suggests that we are viewing the end stages of a reionization process that began at an earlier epoch. Using Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer and Hubble Space Telescope observations of the QSO PG1259+593, we detect D I Lyman-series absorption in high velocity cloud Complex C, a low-metallicity gas cloud falling onto the Milky Way. This is the first detection of atomic deuterium in the local universe in a location other than the nearby regions of the Galactic disk. A new Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) interferometer map of the H I 21 cm emission toward PG1259+593 indicates that the sight line passes through a compact concentration of neutral gas in Complex C. We find D/H = (2.2+/-0.7)x10^-5, O/H = (8.0+/-2.5)x10^-5, and D/O = 0.28+/-0.12. The metallicity of Complex C gas toward PG1259+593 is approximately 1/6 solar, as inferred from the oxygen abundance [O/H] = -0.79 (+0.12, -0.16). While we cannot rule out a value of D/H similar to that found for the local ISM, we can confidently exclude values as low as those determined recently for extended sight lines in the Galactic disk. Combined with the sub-solar metallicity estimate and the low nitrogen abundance, this conclusion lends support to the hypothesis that Complex C is located outside the Milky Way, rather than inside in material recirculated between the Galactic disk and halo. The value of D/H for Complex C is consistent with the primordial abundance of deuterium inferred from recent Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations of the cosmic microwave background and simple chemical evolution models that predict the amount of deuterium astration as a function of metallicity. We report the results of an extensive FUSE study of high velocity OVI absorption along 102 complete sight lines through the Galactic halo. The high velocity OVI traces a variety of phenomena, including tidal interactions with the Magellanic Clouds, accretion of gas, outflow from the Galactic disk, warm/hot gas interactions in a highly extended Galactic corona, and intergalactic gas in the Local Group. We identify 85 high velocity OVI features at velocities of -500 < v(LSR) < +500 km/s along 59 of the 102 sight lines. Approximately 60% of the sky (and perhaps as much as 85%) is covered by high velocity H+ associated with the high velocity OVI. Some of the OVI is associated with known high velocity HI structures (e.g., the Magellanic Stream, Complexes A and C), while some OVI features have no counterpart in HI 21cm emission. The smaller dispersion in the OVI velocities in the GSR and LGSR reference frames compared to the LSR is necessary (but not conclusive) evidence that some of the clouds are extragalactic. Most of the OVI cannot be produced by photoionization, even if the gas is irradiated by extragalactic background radiation. Collisions in hot gas are the primary OVI ionization mechanism. We favor production of some of the OVI at the boundaries between warm clouds and a highly extended [R > 70 kpc], hot [T > 10^6 K], low-density [n < 10^-4 cm^-3] Galactic corona or Local Group medium. A hot Galactic corona or Local Group medium and the prevalence of high velocity OVI are consistent with predictions of galaxy formation scenarios. Distinguishing between the various phenomena producing high velocity OVI will require continuing studies of the distances, kinematics, elemental abundances, and physical states of the different types of high velocity OVI features found in this study. We report the first Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) measurements of diffuse O VI (lambda,lambda 1032,1038) emission from the general diffuse interstellar medium outside of supernova remnants or superbubbles. We observed a 30arcsec x 30arcsec region of the sky centered at l = 315 and b = -41. From the observed intensities (2930+/-290(random)+/-410(systematic) and 1790+/-260(random)+/-250(systematic) photons/cm/cm/s/sr in the 1032 and 1038 Angstrom emission lines, respectively), derived equations, and assumptions about the source location, we calculate the intrinsic intensity, electron density, thermal pressure, and emitting depth. The intensities are too large for the emission to originate solely in the Local Bubble. Thus, we conclude that the Galactic thick disk and lower halo also contribute. High velocity clouds are ruled out because there are none near the pointing direction. The calculated emitting depth is small, indicating that the O VI-bearing gas fills a small volume. The observations can also be used to estimate the cooling rate of the hot interstellar medium and constrain models. The data also yield the first intensity measurement of the C II 3s2 S1/2 to 2p2 P3/2 emission line at 1037 Angstroms and place upper limits on the intensities of ultraviolet line emission from C I, C III, Si II, S III, S IV, S VI, and Fe III., 30 pages including 5 figures and 5 tables; submitted to ApJ, October 2000; accepted by ApJ, May 2001

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of the molecular, neutral atomic, weakly ionized, and highly ionized components of the interstellar and intergalactic material toward the quasar 3C 273. We identify Ly-beta absorption in 8 of the known intergalactic Ly-alpha absorbers along the sight line with rest-frame equivalent widths greater than 50 mA. Refined estimates of the H I column densities and Doppler parameters (b) of the clouds are presented. We find a range of b = 16-46 km/s. We detect multiple H I lines (Ly-beta - Ly-theta) in the 1590 km/s Virgo absorber and estimate log N(H I) = 15.85, ten times more H I than in all of the other absorbers along the sight line combined. The Doppler width of this absorber, b ~ 16 km/s, implies T < 15,000 K. We detect O VI absorption at 1015 km/s at the 2-3 sigma level that may be associated with hot, X-ray emitting gas in the Virgo Cluster. We detect weak C III and O VI absorption in the IGM at z=0.12007; this absorber is predominantly ionized and has N(H+)/N(H I) > 4000/Z, where Z is the metallicity. Strong Galactic interstellar O VI is present between -100 and +100 km/s, with an additional high-velocity wing containing about 13% of the total O VI between +100 and +240 km/s. The broad O VI absorption wing likely traces the expulsion of hot gas out of the Galactic disk into the halo. A limit on the amount of diffuse O VI emission present 3.5 arc minutes off the sight line combined with the observed O VI column density toward 3C 273, implies n_e < 0.02 cm^-3 and P/k < 11,500 cm^-3 K for an assumed temperature of 3x10^5 K. We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer observations of the star-forming galaxy Mrk 54 at z = 0.0448. The Lyman continuum radiation is not detected above the HI absorption edge in our Galaxy. An upper limit is evaluated by comparison with the background measured in regions of the detector adjacent to the observed spectrum. A spectral window of 16 A, reasonably free of additional HI Lyman series line absorption is used. No correction is needed for molecular hydrogen absorption in our Galaxy but a foreground extinction of 0.29 mag is accounted for. An upper limit of 6.15 10^{-16} erg/cm^2/s/A is obtained for the flux at ~ 900 A in the rest frame of Mrk 54. By comparison with the number of ionizing photons derived from the H-alpha flux, this limit translates into an upper limit of f_esc < 0.062 for the fraction of Lyman continuum photons that escape the galaxy without being absorbed by interstellar material. This limit compares with the limits obtained in three other nearby galaxies and is compatible with the escape fractions predicted by models. The upper limits obtained in nearby galaxies contrasts with the detection of Lyman continuum flux in the composite spectrum of Lyman-break galaxies at z ~ 3.4. We compute the ionizing radiation field at low redshift, arising from Seyferts, QSOs, and starburst galaxies. This calculation combines recent Seyfert luminosity functions, extrapolated ultraviolet fluxes from our IUE-AGN database, and a new intergalactic opacity model based on Hubble Space Telescope and Keck Ly-alpha absorber surveys. At z = 0 for AGN only, our best estimate for the specific intensity at 1 Ryd is I_0 = 1.3 (+0.8/-0.5) x 10^-23 ergs/cm^2/s/Hz/sr, independent of H_0, Omega_0, and Lambda. The one-sided ionizing photon flux is Phi_ion = 3400 (+2100/-1300) photons/cm^2/s, and the H I photoionization rate is Gamma_HI = 3.2 (+2.0/-1.2) x 10^-14 s^-1 for alpha_s = 1.8. We also derive Gamma_ HI for z = 0 - 4. These error ranges reflect uncertainties in the spectral indexes for the ionizing EUV (alpha_s = 1.8 +/- 0.3) and the optical/UV (alpha_UV = 0.86 +/- 0.05), the IGM opacity model, the range of Seyfert luminosities (0.001 - 100 L*) and the completeness of the luminosity functions. Our estimate is a factor of three lower than the most stringent upper limits on the ionizing background (Phi_ion < 10^4 photons/cm^2/s) obtained from H-alpha observations in external clouds, and it lies within the range implied by other indirect measures. Starburst galaxies with a sufficiently large Lyman continuum escape fraction, f_ esc > 0.05, may provide a comparable background to AGN, I_0 (z=0) = 1.1 (+1.5/-0.7) x 10^{-23). An additional component of the ionizing background of this magnitude would violate neither upper limits from H-alpha observations nor the acceptable range from other measurements., 30 pages, 9 figures, accepted for Astronomical J. An 8 month monitoring campaign on the Seyfert 1 galaxy Fairall 9 has been conducted with the International Ultraviolet Explorer in an attempt to obtain reliable estimates of continuum-continuum and continuum-emission-line delays for a high-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN). While the results of this campaign are more ambiguous than those of previous monitoring campaigns on lower luminosity sources, we find general agreement with the earlier results: (1) there is no measurable lag between ultraviolet continuum bands, and (2) the measured emission-line time lags are very short. It is especially notable that the Lyα + N v emission-line lag is about 1 order of magnitude smaller than determined from a previous campaign by Clavel, Wamsteker, & Glass (1989) when Fairall 9 was in a more luminous state. In other well-monitored sources, specifically NGC 5548 and NGC 3783, the highest ionization lines are found to respond to continuum variations more rapidly than the lower ionization lines, which suggests a radially ionization-stratified broad-line region. In this case, the results are less certain, since none of the emission-line lags are very well determined. The best-determined emission line lag is Lyα + N v, for which we find that the centroid of the continuum-emission-line cross-correlation function is τcent ≈ 14-20 days. We measure a lag τcent ≲ 4 days for He II λ1640; this result is consistent with the ionization-stratification pattern seen in lower luminosity sources, but the relatively large uncertainties in the emission-line lags measured here cannot rule out similar lags for Lyα + N v and He II λ1640 at a high level of significance. We are unable to determine a reliable lag for C IV λ1550, but we note that the profiles of the variable parts of Lyα and C IV λ1550 are not the same, which does not support the hypothesis that the strongest variations in these two lines arise in the same region.

We present the results of an intensive ultraviolet monitoring campaign on the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151, as part of an effort to study its short time-scale variability over a broad range in wavelength. The nucleus of NGC 4151 was observed continuously with the {\it International Ultraviolet Explorer} (IUE) for 9.3 days, yielding a pair of LWP and SWP spectra every $\sim$70 minutes, and during four-hour periods for 4 days prior to and 5 days after the continuous monitoring period. The sampling frequency of the observations is an order of magnitude higher than that of any previous UV monitoring campaign on a Seyfert galaxy. The continuum fluxes in bands from 1275 \AA\ to 2688 \AA\ went through four significant and well-defined ``events'' of duration 2 -- 3 days during the continuous monitoring period. We find that the amplitudes of the continuum variations decrease with increasing wavelength, which extends a general trend for this and other Seyfert galaxies to smaller time scales (i.e., a few days). The continuum variations in all of the UV bands are {\it simultaneous} to within an accuracy of about 0.15 days, providing a strict constraint on continuum models. The emission-line light curves show only one major event during the continuous monitoring (a slow rise followed by a shallow dip), and do not correlate well with continuum light curves over the (short) duration of the campaign, because the time scale for continuum variations is apparently smaller than the response times of the emission lines., Comment: 39 pages, LaTeX, including 7 PostScript figures; To appear in the ApJ (October 20, 1996) Vol. 470

We report the discovery of 33 Lyman break galaxy (LBG) candidates at z~8 detected in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) imaging as part of the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) pure-parallel survey. The ongoing BoRG survey currently has the largest area (274 arcmin^2) with Y_098 (or Y_105), J_125, and H_160 band coverage needed to search for z~8 galaxies, about three times the current CANDELS area, and slightly larger than what will be the final CANDELS wide component with Y_105 data. Our sample of 33 relatively bright Y_098-dropout galaxies have J_125 band magnitudes between 25.5 and 27.4 mag. Theoretical and numerical modeling of dark-matter halo assembly predicts that the most luminous galaxies at high redshift are surrounded by overdensities of fainter companions. We test this prediction with HST observations acquired by our Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) survey, which identified four very bright z~8 candidates as Y-dropout sources in four of the 23 non-contiguous WFC3 fields observed. We extend here the search for Y-dropouts to fainter luminosities (M_* galaxies with M_AB\sim-20), with detections at >5sigma confidence (compared to >8sigma confidence adopted earlier) identifying 17 new candidates. We demonstrate that there is a correlation between number counts of faint and bright Y-dropouts at >99.84% confidence. Field BoRG58, which contains the best bright z\sim8 candidate (M_AB=-21.3), has the most significant overdensity of faint Y-dropouts. Four new sources are located within 70arcsec (corresponding to 3.1 comoving Mpc at z=8) from the previously known brighter z\sim8 candidate. The overdensity of Y-dropouts in this field has a physical origin to high confidence (p>99.975%), independent of completeness and contamination rate of the Y-dropout selection. We modeled the overdensity by means of cosmological simulations and estimate that the principal dark matter halo has mass M_h\sim(4-7)x10^11Msun (\sim5sigma density peak) and is surrounded by several M_h\sim10^11Msun halos which could host the fainter dropouts. In this scenario, we predict that all halos will eventually merge into a M_h>2x10^14Msun galaxy cluster by z=0. Daily monitoring of PKS 2155-304 with the IUE satellite throughout November 1991 has revealed dramatic, large-amplitude, rapid variations in the ultraviolet flux of this BL Lac object. Many smaller, rapid flares are superimposed on a general doubling of the intensity. During the five-day period when sampling was roughly continuous, the rapid flaring had an apparent quasi-periodic nature, with peaks repeating every ~0.7 days. The short- and long-wavelength ultraviolet light curves are well correlated with each other, and with the optical light curve deduced from the Fine Error Sensor (FES) on IUE. The formal lag is zero but the cross-correlation if asymmetric in the sense that the shorter wavelength emission leads the longer. The ultraviolet spectral shape varies a small but significant amount. The correlation between spectral shape and intensity is complicated; an increase in intensity is associated with spectral hardening, but lags behind the spectral change by ~1 day. The sign of the correlation is consistent with the nonthermal acceleration processes expected in relativistic plasmas, so that the present results are consistent with relativistic jet models, which can also account for quasi-periodic flaring. We present the data and initial results from a combined Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/IUE/ground-based spectroscopic monitoring campaign on the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 that was undertaken in order to address questions that require both higher temporal resolution and higher signal-to-noise ratios than were obtained in our previous multiwavelength monitoring of this galaxy in 1988-1989. IUE spectra were obtained once every 2 days for a period of 74 days beginning on 1993 March 14. During the last 39 days of this campaign, spectroscopic observations were also made with the HST Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) on a daily basis. Ground-based observations, consisting of 165 optical spectra and 77 photometric observations (both CCD imaging and aperture photometry), are reported for the period 1992 October-1993 September, although many of the data are concentrated around the time of the satellite-based program. These data constitute a fifth year of intensive optical monitoring of this galaxy. In this contribution we describe the acquisition and reduction of all of the satellite and ground-based data obtained in this program. We describe in detail various photometric problems with the FOS and explain how we identified and corrected for various anomalies.

Simultaneous X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared, and radio monitoring data were used to test and constrain models of continuum emission from the BL Lacertae object PKS 2155-304. Intensively sampled ultraviolet and soft X-ray light curves showed a clear temporal correlation with the X-rays leading the ultraviolet by 2-3 hr. This lag was found to be significantly different from zero after an exhaustive comparison of four different techniques for measuring temporal correlations. Variations in the ultraviolet trough optical wave bands were also strongly correlated, with no measurable lag down to limiting timescales of approximately less than 1-2 hr. This strong correlation extends to the near-infrared, but the less intensive sampling precludes measurement of any lag beyomnd an upper limit of approximately less than 1 day. These lags and limits of the order of hours are much shorter than most rapid observed single-band variations. Because of the very sparse radio sampling, it was not possible to measure quantitatively the correlation and lag with shorter wavelengths, but the data do suggest that the radio may lag the optical/ultraviolet by approximately 1 week, with longer delays and weaker variations to longer radio wavelengths. The epoch-folding Q(exp 2) statistic was used to test for periodicity, and no evidence for strict or quasi-periodicity was found in any of the light curves. Because they lead the lower frequencies, the soft X-rays (approximately less than 1 keV) cannot arise from synchrotron self-Compton scattering. These results also rule out the accretion disk model, which predicts a measurable lag between ultraviolet/optical wavelength bands and a correlation between hardness and brightness, neither of which were seen. They are consistent with the entire radio through X-ray continuum arising from direct synchrotron emission from a relativistic jet. However, the tapered jet model, in which the X-ray emission is produced closer in, has problems explaining the magnitude of the ultraviolet/X-ray lag, because the X-ray-emitting electrons have very short lifetimes (t(sub 1/2) much less than 1 s). The result that the lag is much smaller than the variability timescale suggests instead that the radiation may be produced in a flattened region such as a shock front.

We report on the results of intensive ultraviolet spectral monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783. The nucleus of NGC 3783 was observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite on a regular basis for a total of 7 months, once every 4 days for the first 172 days and once every other day for the final 50 days. Significant variability was observed in both continuum and emission-line fluxes. The light curves for the continuum fluxes exhibited two well-defined local minima or 'dips,' the first lasting is less than or approximately 20 days and the second is less than or approximately 4 days, with additional episodes of relatively rapid flickering of approximately the same amplitude. As in the case of NGC 5548 (the only other Seyfert galaxy that has been the subject of such an intensive, sustained monitoring effort), the largest continuum variations were seen at the shortest wavelengths, so that the continuum became 'harder' when brighter. The variations in the continuum occurred simultaneously at all wavelengths (delta(t) is less than 2 days). Generally, the amplitude of variability of the emission lines was lower than (or comparable to) that of the continuum. Apart from Mg II (which varied little) and N V (which is relatively weak and badly blended with Ly(alpha), the light curves of the emission lines are very similar to the continuum light curves, in each case with a small systematic delay or 'lag.' As for NGC 5548, the highest ionization lines seem to respond with shorter lags than the lower ionization lines. The lags found for NGC 3783 are considerably shorter than those obtained for NGC 5548, with values of (formally) approximately 0 days for He II + O III), and approximately 4 days for Ly(alpha) and C IV. The data further suggest lags of approximately 4 days for Si IV + O IV) and 8-30 days for Si III + C III). Mg II lagged the 1460 A continuum by approximately 9 days, although this result depends on the method of measuring the line flux and may in fact be due to variability of the underlying Fe II lines. Correlation analysis further shows that the power density spectrum contains substantial unresolved power over timescales of is less than or approximately 2 days, and that the character of the continuum variability may change with time.

It is often assumed that Ly-alpha forest clouds are randomly distributed, intergalactic objects that are highly ionized by the UV background produced by quasars. If these assumptions are true, fluctuations in the UV background should produce a nonzero two point correlation function in the Ly-alpha forest. This effect, which is really just a generalization of the proximity effect, is more significant at high redshift (z is approximately 3-4) because the mean free path for UV photons is smaller there, and the fluctuations correspondingly larger. This effect was studied using both the semi-analytic techniques of Zuo's recent papers and Monte Carlo simulations. The correlation function is expected to have a small yet potentially measurable amplitude that is consistent with current upper limits. Furthermore, the signature of this effect is distinctive because the nonzero correlation function extends over the photon mean free path, which is larger than the expected scale of large-scale structure. Observations or upper limits on this effect could provide information about the source of the ionizing background at high redshifts and the nature of the Ly-alpha forest clouds.

This is the second in a series of papers examining variable absorption components in the broad emission lines of Seyfert 1 galaxies. In an IUE survey of a complete sample of CfA Seyfert galaxies, we find that at least 12% and perhaps as many as 27% of the objects show evidence of intrinsic absorption in C IV λ1549. In this paper, we use data from an 8 month IUE campaign on NGC 5548 to study the C IV absorption component. From the observed fluxes and C IV ionization conditions, we infer that the C IV absorption occurs within (14 pc)r 6 −1/2 of the nucleus. The C IV absorption feature is blueshifted by ∼1200 km s −1 from the systemic velocity of the galaxy and varies on a timescale of 4 days or less, indicating that n e ≥5×10 5 cm −3 from recombination-response arguments

It is proposed that turbulent mixing layers are common in the ISM of the Milky Way and selected external galaxies, with many layers per kiloparsec along typical lines of sight. All of the diffuse C I 1550-A background emission and a significant fraction of the diffuse H-alpha background at high latitude can be explained by mixing layers cooling at pressure of about 3000/cu cm K. These models also produce the correct ratio of semiforbidden C IV 15500 III 1663-A emission. Only 10 percent of the disk H-alpha is likely to arise from mixing layers. The observed Galactic absorption-line column densities of C IV, N V, Si IV, and O VI are roughly consistent with mixing-layer models with an intermediate temperature of about 10 exp 5.3 K and depleted abundances.

This paper presents consistently reduced UV continuum flux densities amd spectra indices derived from all 499 usable archived IUE observations of blazars made through mid-1991. The extraction of 1D spectra and the measurement of spectral parameters are discussed. A detailed error analysis is presented, including a discussion of the difference in the calibration between the IUE long- and short-wavelength cameras. The resulting data are presented in tabular and graphical form and are available by electronic mail as well. These results will be most useful for variability studies, but can also be used to characterize the broad-band energy distributions and to compare blazar properties with those of other AGN. This is the first in a series of papers, in which extracted spectral parameters will be published for the over 4500 spectra of AGN in the IUE archives.

We investigate the nature of two large conical indentations in the Crab Nebula's synchrotron emission, commonly known as the east and west 'bays'. Optical images spanning nearly nine decades (1899-1988) reveal the bays to be long-lasting remnant features. Proper motions of the bays away from the remnant's center of expansion are consistent with their locations near the SN progenitor site in A.D. 1054. Based on their morphologies and polarization properties, the bays appear to be portions of a torus encircling the remnant's center of expansion. The nebular magnetic field wrapped around this torus blocks the pulsar's relativistic particles, resulting in the observed lack of synchrotron emission. We propose that this torus is the result of a presupernova disklike ejection not less than 0.1 solar mass by the Crab progenitor, similar to the ring around SN 1987 A. A 0.5 solar mass disk of He-rich filaments along the equatorial plane is probably also related to presupernova mass loss, which might explain the wide range of abundances seen among filaments.

New studies are reported of a large, 2 x 5 deg peanut-shaped cavity in the far-infrared emission seen using IRAS data for the Cygnus X region. A more complete and better defined infrared supershell than reported by Lozinskaya and Repin (1990) is found and connected to the Cyg OB1 association. It is shown that the cavity represents the early stages of a superbubble produced by the winds and possible SNe from 10 to 20 massive stars. The locations and properties of these stars are used to estimate the energy deposition rate and to understand the manner in which supershells form and propagate. In Cyg OB1, spatially distributed subclustering appears to have played an important role in determining the nonspherical morphology of the superbubble.
