We present new radio and optical images of the nearest radio galaxy Centaurus A and its host galaxy NGC 5128. We focus our investigation on the northern transition region, where energy is transported from the ~5 kpc (~5 arcmin) scales of the Northern Inner Lobe (NIL) to the ~30 kpc (~30 arcmin) scales of the Northern Middle Lobe (NML). Our Murchison Widefield Array observations at 154 MHz and our Parkes radio telescope observations at 2.3 GHz show diffuse radio emission connecting the NIL to the NML, in agreement with previous Australia Telescope Compact Array observations at 1.4 GHz. Comparison of these radio data with our widefield optical emission line images show the relationship between the NML radio emission and the ionised filaments that extend north from the NIL, and reveal a new ionised filament to the east, possibly associated with a galactic wind. Our deep optical images show clear evidence for a bipolar outflow from the central galaxy extending to intermediate scales, despite the non-detection of a southern radio counterpart to the NML. Thus, our observational overview of Centaurus A reveals a number of features proposed to be associated with AGN feedback mechanisms, often cited as likely to have significant effects in galaxy evolution models. We report the detection, using observations of the CO(2-1) line performed with the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX), of molecular gas in the region of the outer filament of Centaurus A, a complex region known to show various signatures of an interaction between the radio jet, an HI cloud, and ionised gas filaments. We detect CO(2-1) at all observed locations, which were selected to represent regions with very different physical conditions. The H_2 masses of the detections range between 0.2 x 10^6 and 1.1 x 10^6 \msun, for conservative choices of the CO to H_2 conversion factor. Surprisingly, the stronger detections are not coincident with the HI cloud, but instead are in the region of the ionised filaments. We also find variations in the widths of the CO(2-1) lines throughout the region, with broader lines in the region of the ionised gas, i.e. where the jet--cloud interaction is strongest, and with narrow profiles in the HI cloud. This may indicate that the molecular gas in the region of the ionised gas has the momentum of the jet-cloud interaction encoded in it, in the same way as the ionised gas does. These molecular clouds may therefore be the result of very efficient cooling of the down-stream gas photo- or shock-ionised by the interaction. Centaurus A (NGC5128) is a fantastic object, ideal for investigating the characteristics and the role of the gas in an early-type galaxy in the presence of a radio-loud active nucleus. The different phases of the gas - hot (X-ray), warm (ionised) and cold (HI and molecular) - are all detected in this object and can be studied, due to its proximity, at very high spatial resolution. This richness makes Centaurus A truly unique. Spatially, these gas structures span from the pc to the tens of kpc scale. Thus, they allow us to trace very different phenomena, from the formation and evolution of the host galaxy, to the interplay between nuclear activity and ISM and the feeding mechanism of the central black hole. We present neutral hydrogen, ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared imaging, and optical spectroscopy, of Minkowski's Object (MO), a star forming peculiar galaxy near NGC 541. The observations strengthen evidence that star formation in MO was triggered by the radio jet from NGC 541. Key new results are the discovery of a 4.9E8 solar mass double HI cloud straddling the radio jet downstream from MO, where the jet changes direction and decollimates; strong detections of MO, also showing double structure, in UV and H-alpha; and numerous HII regions and associated clusters in MO. In UV, MO resembles the radio-aligned, rest-frame UV morphologies in many high redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs), also thought to be caused by jet-induced star formation. MO's stellar population is dominated by a 7.5 Myr-old, 1.9E7 solar mass instantaneous burst, with current star formation rate 0.52 solar masses per year (concentrated upstream from where the HI column density is high). This is unlike the jet-induced star formation in Centaurus A, where the jet interacts with pre-existing cold gas; in MO the HI may have cooled out of a warmer, clumpy intergalactic or interstellar medium as a result of jet interaction, followed by collapse of the cooling clouds and subsequent star formation (consistent with numerical simulations). Since the radio source that triggered star formation in MO is much less luminous, and therefore more common, than powerful HzRGs, and because the environment around MO is not particularly special in terms of abundant dense, cold gas, jet-induced star formation in the early universe might be even more prevalent than previously thought., 52 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
