GRAIL gravity data shows small-scale gravity anomalies radiating out from the Orientale basin between distances of ∼550 km (average distance to the Cordillera ring) and ∼1000 km. These radial gravity lineations are sometimes associated with secondary crater chains or catenae, of which the specific details of formation and their relation to the basin ejecta remain unclear. However, many of the radial gravity anomalies have no clear topographic signature at all. Typical anomalies have an average width of about 20 km, with a magnitude of ± 20 mGal, and a length of 50–200 km. Here we use gravity inversions, hydrocode modeling, and observations to investigate the radial gravity anomalies in more detail. Density inversion models show that the gravity can be matched by solutions ranging from broad low-amplitude anomalies with density contrasts of ± 20 kg/m3 extending to depths of tens of kilometers, to shallow high-amplitude anomalies with density contrasts of about ± 200–400 kg/m3 confined to the top ∼1–2 km of the crust. Hydrocode models of the low-velocity secondary impacts of basin ejecta show that the impacting material does not disperse – as occurs for hypervelocity impacts – but instead remains as a thin layer within the secondary craters. This remaining secondary projectile material derived from Orientale ejecta can explain the linear gravity anomalies associated with secondary crater chains and catenae. However, this does not explain the majority of linear gravity features that are not associated with secondary crater chains. Therefore, we conclude that the majority of radial gravity anomalies represent the structure of the ejecta deposit. This density variability within the ejecta of basins likely contributes substantially to the density variability of the shallow upper crust as a whole.

We used gravity mapping observations from NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) to detect, characterize and validate the presence of large impact craters buried beneath the lunar maria. In this paper we focus on two prominent anomalies detected in the GRAIL data using the gravity gradiometry technique. Our detection strategy is applied to both free-air and Bouguer gravity field observations to identify gravitational signatures that are similar to those observed over buried craters. The presence of buried craters is further supported by individual analysis of regional free-air gravity anomalies, Bouguer gravity anomaly maps, and forward modeling. Our best candidate, for which we propose the informal name of Earhart Crater, is approximately 200 km in diameter and forms part of the northwestern rim of Lacus Somniorum, The other candidate, for which we propose the informal name of Ashoka Anomaly, is approximately 160 km in diameter and lies completely buried beneath Mare Tranquillitatis. Other large, still unrecognized, craters undoubtedly underlie other portions of the Moon’s vast mare lavas.

Martian meteorites are currently the only rock samples from Mars available for direct study in terrestrial laboratories. Linking individual specimens back to their source terrains is a major scientific priority, and constraining the size of the impact craters from which each sample was ejected is a critical step in achieving this goal. During ejection from the surface of Mars by hypervelocity impacts, these meteorites were briefly compressed to high temperatures and pressures. The period of time that these meteorites spent at high pressure during ejection, or the ‘dwell time’, has been used to infer the size of the crater from which they were ejected. This inference requires assumptions that relate shock duration to impactor size, and the relation used by many authors is neither physically motivated nor accurate. Using the iSALE2D shock physics code we simulate vertical impacts at high resolution to investigate the dwell time that basaltic rocks from Mars (shergottites) spend at high pressure and temperature during ejection. Future simulation of oblique impacts will lead to more accurate dwell time estimates. Ultimately, we find that dwell time is insensitive to changes in impact velocity but for a given impact, dwell times are longer for material originating from greater depth and material that experiences higher shock pressures. Using our results, we provide scaling laws for estimating impactor size. During the formation of craters 1.9, 14, and 104 km in diameter, material capable of escaping Mars will have mean dwell times of 1, 10, and 100 ms, respectively.

The extreme pressures reached during jetting, a process by which material is squirted out from the contact point of two colliding objects, causes melting and vaporization at low impact velocities. Jetting is a major source of melting in shocked porous material, a potential source of tektites, a possible origin of chondrules, and even a conceivable origin of the Moon. Here, in an attempt to quantify the importance of jetting, we present numerical simulation of jetting during the vertical impacts of spherical projectiles on both flat and curved targets. We find that impacts on curved targets result in more jetted material but that higher impact velocities result in less jetted material. For an aluminum impactor striking a flat Al target at 2 km/s we find that 3.4% of a projectile mass is jetted while 8.3% is jetted for an impact between two equal sized Al spheres. Our results indicate that the theory of jetting during the collision of thin plates can be used to predict the conditions when jetting will occur. However, we find current analytic models do not make accurate predictions of the amount of jetted mass. Our work indicates that the amount of jetted mass is independent of model resolution as long as some jetted material is resolved. This is the result of lower velocity material dominating the mass of the jet.

We present a model that describes the formation of melt droplets, melt fragments, and accretionary impact lapilli during a hypervelocity impact. Using the iSALE hydrocode, coupled to the ANEOS equation of state for silica, we create high-resolution two-dimensional impact models to track the motion of impact ejecta. We then estimate the size of the ejecta products using simple analytical expressions and information derived from our hydrocode models. Ultimately, our model makes predictions of how the size of the ejecta products depends on impactor size, impact velocity, and ejection velocity. In general, we find that larger impactor sizes result in larger ejecta products and higher ejection velocities result in smaller ejecta product sizes. We find that a 10 km diameter impactor striking at a velocity of 20 km/s creates millimeter scale melt droplets comparable to the melt droplets found in the Chicxulub ejecta curtain layer. Our model also predicts that melt droplets, melt fragments, and accretionary impact lapilli should be found together in well preserved ejecta curtain layers and that all three ejecta products can form even on airless bodies that lack significant volatile content. This prediction agrees with observations of ejecta from the Sudbury and Chicxulub impacts as well as the presence of accretionary impact lapilli in lunar breccia.

We have constructed a numerical model of spherule formation in an impact produced vapor plume. This model tracks the expansion of the vapor plume using a one-dimensional Lagrangian hydrocode coupled with the ANEOS equation of state for silica. We then include the equations for nucleation and growth as described by homogeneous nucleation theory to describe the process of spherule formation. We use this model to determine the number and size of the spherules that an impact creates. We also explore when and where spherules are formed in the vapor plume, and how this affects the size of the spherules. In general we find that smaller spherules form in the outer, faster moving, portions of the vapor plume at earlier times. This work also explores the effect of impactor size and impact velocity on the resultant spherule size. We report a simple linear dependence on impactor size and a complex dependence on impact velocity. We find that a 10 km diameter asteroid impacting at a velocity of ∼21 km/s creates spherules that are ∼250 μm in diameter which is comparable to the spherules found in the K/Pg boundary layer.

Visible images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have revealed more than 200 new impact sites on Mars (almost all in dust-mantled regions) containing 1–50 m diameter craters, often in clusters. We count approximately 65,000 small-scale slope streaks within 2 to 3 km of one such cluster and categorize them into four morphologically distinct types. Here we show that these slope streaks (interpreted as dust avalanches) are triggered by the impact event but, surprisingly, are not due to seismic shaking; instead, the dust avalanches are due to airblasts created by the supersonic meteor(s) before impact. Sixteen of the new impact sites are associated with high areal densities of dust avalanches. The observed dust avalanche frequency suggests that impact-generated airblasts constitute a locally important and previously unrecognized process for inducing slope degradation on Mars.

We performed the first global survey of lunar regolith depths using Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) data and the crater morphology method for determining regolith depth. We find that on both the lunar farside and in the nearside, non-mare regions, the regolith depth is twice as deep as it is within the lunar maria. Our data compare favorably with previous studies where such data exist. We also find that regolith depth correlates well with density of large craters (>20 km diameter). This result is consistent with the gradual formation of regolith by rock fracture during impact events.

Hale crater, a 125 × 150 km impact crater located near the intersection of Uzboi Vallis and the northern rim of Argyre basin at 35.7°S, 323.6°E, is surrounded by channels that radiate from, incise, and transport material within Hale’s ejecta. The spatial and temporal relationship between the channels and Hale’s ejecta strongly suggests the impact event created or modified the channels and emplaced fluidized debris flow lobes over an extensive area (>200,000 km2). We estimate ∼1010 m3 of liquid water was required to form some of Hale’s smaller channels, a volume we propose was supplied by subsurface ice melted and mobilized by the Hale-forming impact. If 10% of the subsurface volume was ice, based on a conservative porosity estimate for the upper martian crust, 1012 m3 of liquid water could have been present in the ejecta. We determine a crater-retention age of 1 Ga inside the primary cavity, providing a minimum age for Hale and a time at which we propose the subsurface was volatile-rich. Hale crater demonstrates the important role impacts may play in supplying liquid water to the martian surface: they are capable of producing fluvially-modified terrains that may be analogous to some landforms of Noachian Mars.

We investigate the spatial distributions of boulders ejected from 18 lunar impact craters that are hundreds of meters in diameter. To accomplish this goal, we measured the diameters of 13,955 ejected boulders and the distance of each boulder from the crater center. Using the boulder distances, we calculated ejection velocities for the boulders. We compare these data with previously published data on larger craters and use this information to determine how boulder ejection velocity scales with crater diameter. We also measured regolith depths in the areas surrounding many of the craters, for comparison with the boulder distributions. These results contribute to understanding boulder ejection velocities, to determining whether there is a relationship between the quantity of ejected boulders and lunar regolith depths, and to understanding the distributions of secondary craters in the Solar System. Understanding distributions of blocky ejecta is an important consideration for landing site selection on both the Moon and Mars.

Numerical modelling of impact cratering has reached a high degree of sophistication; however, the treatment of porous materials still poses a large problem in hydrocode calculations. We present a novel approach for dealing with porous compaction in numerical modelling of impact crater formation. In contrast to previous attempts (e.g., P-alpha model, snowplow model), our model accounts for the collapse of pore space by assuming that the compaction function depends upon volumetric strain rather than pressure. Our new e-alpha model requires only four input parameters and each has a physical meaning. The model is simple and intuitive and shows good agreement with a wide variety of experimental data, ranging from static compaction tests to highly dynamic impact experiments. Our major objective in developing the model is to investigate the effect of porosity and internal friction on transient crater formation. We present preliminary numerical model results that suggest that both porosity and internal friction play an important role in limiting crater growth over a large range in gravity-scaled source size.

A 100 km deep liquid water ocean probably underlies the icy exterior of Jupiter’s satellite Europa. The long-term persistence of a liquid ocean beneat ha n ice shell presents a thermal conundrum: Is the temperature of the ocean equal to the freezing point of water at the bottom of the ice shell, or is it equal t o the somewhat warmer temperature at which water attains its maximum density? We argue that most of the ocean is at the temperature of maximum density and that the bulk of the vigorously convecting ocean is separated from the bottom of the ice shell by a thin “stratosphere” of stably stratified water whi ch is at the freezing point, and therefore buoyant. If Europa’s subsurface water ocean is warm, it could explain the widespread geologic evidence for app arent melt-through events observed on its surface and may constrain the overall age of its surface.

Hydrocode modeling is a fundamental tool for the study of melt production in planetary impact events. Until recently, however, numerical modeling of impacts for melt production studies has been limited to vertical impacts. We present the first results of the investigation of melt production in oblique impacts. Simulations were carried out using Sandia's three-dimensional hydrocode CTH, coupled to the SESAME equation of state. While keeping other impact parameters constant, the calculations span impact angles (measured from the surface) from 90° (vertical impact) to 15°. The results show that impact angle affects the strength and distribution of the shock wave generated in the impact. As a result, both the isobaric core and the regions of melting in the target appear asymmetric and concentrated in the downrange, shallower portion of the target. The use of a pressure-decay power law (which describes pressure as function of linear distance from the impact point) to reconstruct the region of melting and vaporization is therefore complicated by the asymmetry of the shock wave. As an analog to the pressure decay versus distance from the impact point, we used a “volumetric pressure decay,” where the pressure decay is modeled as a function of volume of target material shocked at or above the given shock pressure. We find that the volumetric pressure decay exponent is almost constant for impact angles from 90° to 30°, dropping by about a factor of two for a 15° impact. In the range of shock pressures at which most materials of geologic interest melt or begin to vaporize, we find that the volume of impact melt decreases by at most 20% for impacts from 90° down to 45°. Below 45°, however, the amount of melt in the target decreases rapidly with impact angle. Compared to the vertical case, the reduction in volume of melt is about 50% for impacts at 30° and more than 90% for a 15° impact. These estimates do not include possible melting due to shear heating, which can contribute to the amount of melt production especially in very oblique impacts. Studies of melt production in vertical impacts suggest an energy scaling law in agreement with the point source limit. An energy scaling law, however, does not seem to hold for oblique impacts, even when the impact velocity is substituted by its vertical component. However, we find that for impact angles between about 30° and 90° (a range that includes 75% of impact events on planetary surfaces) the volume of melt is directly proportional to the volume of the transient crater generated by the impact.

Natural impacts in which the projectile strikes the target vertically are virtually nonexistent. Nevertheless, our inherent drive to simplify nature often causes us to suppose most impacts are nearly vertical. Recent theoretical, observational, and experimental work is improving this situation, but even with the current wealth of studies on impact cratering, the effect of impact angle on the final crater is not well understood. Although craters’ rims may appear circular down to low impact angles, the distribution of ejecta around the crater is more sensitive to the angle of impact and currently serves as the best guide to obliquity of impacts. Experimental studies established that crater dimensions depend only on the vertical component of the impact velocity. The shock wave generated by the impact weakens with decreasing impact angle. As a result, melting and vaporization depend on impact angle; however, these processes do not seem to depend on the vertical component of the velocity alone. Finally, obliquity influences the fate of the projectile: in particular, the amount and velocity of ricochet are a strong function of impact angle.

The dynamical lifetimes of small bodies against ejection from the Solar System or collision with the Sun or a planet are often estimated by Monte Carlo codes based on the equations of Opik and using a method implemented by Arnold. Such algorithms assume that orbital changes are dominated by close encounters, and that successive encounters are uncorrelated. We have compared the results of an Opik code (H. J. Melosh and W. B. Tonks, Mete-oritics 28 , 398 (1993)) and a fast integrator (H. F. Levison and M. J. Duncan, Icarus 108 , 18 (1994)) to investigate the regimes of validity of the Opik–Arnold approach. We investigate the transfer of ecliptic comets from Neptune-crossing orbits to observable Jupiter-family comets, the dynamics of Halley-type comets, and the transport of meteorites among the terrestrial planets. In all cases, the Opik code overestimates the median lifetime of the small bodies, although both codes show a rapid initial loss of objects followed by a slow decay. For martian impact ejecta, some of which find their way to Earth as the SNC meteorites, the Opik code substantially overestimates lifetimes because of its neglect of secular resonances, which rapidly pump eccentricities (B. J. Gladman et al. , Science 271 , 1387 (1996)).

▪ Abstract The detailed morphology of impact craters is now believed to be mainly caused by the collapse of a geometrically simple, bowl-shaped “transient crater.” The transient crater forms immediately after the impact. In small craters, those less than approximately 15 km diameter on the Moon, the steepest part of the rim collapses into the crater bowl to produce a lens of broken rock in an otherwise unmodified transient crater. Such craters are called “simple” and have a depth-to-diameter ratio near 1:5. Large craters collapse more spectacularly, giving rise to central peaks, wall terraces, and internal rings in still larger craters. These are called “complex” craters. The transition between simple and complex craters depends on 1/g, suggesting that the collapse occurs when a strength threshold is exceeded. The apparent strength, however, is very low: only a few bars, and with little or no internal friction. This behavior requires a mechanism for temporary strength degradation in the rocks surrounding the impact site. Several models for this process, including acoustic fluidization and shock weakening, have been considered by recent investigations. Acoustic fluidization, in particular, appears to produce results in good agreement with observations, although better understanding is still needed.

In this paper, we study the effect of target size on the fragmentation outcome of rock targets using a 2D numerical hydrocode. After comparing our hydrocode calculations to laboratory data (including explosive disruption experiments) to validate the results, we use the code to calculate how the critical specific energy ( Q *) needed to catastrophically fracture a body varies with target size in the regimes not accessible to experiment. Impact velocity is generally kept constant at about 2.0 km s −1 , although some higher velocity (∼5 km s −1 ) simulations were run to determine a velocity dependence for the fragmentation outcome. To reflect the asteroid population, target diameters range from 10 cm to 1000 km, spanning the regimes where strength and self-gravity (radially varying lithostatic stress) each dominate resistance to fragmentation. We find that there is a significant difference in fragmentation outcome when the lithostatic stress is included in the computations. As expected, surface layers fragment more easily, while the strength of the central regions is greatly enhanced. We derive the Q * versus size relationship for three materials, (basalt, strong-, and weak-cement mortar) each having different static compressive strengths and representing a range of asteroid materials. The hydrocode results showed that Q * decreased with increasing target size in the strength regime, with slopes of 0.43, 0.59, and 0.6 for basalt, strong and weak mortar, respectively. This decrease is directly related to the decrease in strain rate as target size grows. In the gravity regime, Q * increases with increasing target size, with a slope equal to 2.6 for all three of the materials modeled. These values are much steeper than those previously derived from scaling theories. Ejecta velocity distributions as a function of target size are examined as well. For large bodies, resultant ejecta speeds tend to be well below escape velocity, implying that these asteroids are likely to be reaccumulated rubble piles. In simulating the creation of the asteroid family Eos, we find that the code-calculated fragment size distribution is similar in character to the observed data, but secondary fragment sizes are significantly underestimated. More importantly, the determined ejecta speeds were too low for these fragments to have achieved escape velocity, and thus we fail to actually form the separate bodies comprising the Eos family, and are left instead with a single rubble pile conglomerate.

The Magellan radar imager detected approximately 60 dark (i.e., low backscatter cross section) parabola-shaped features on the surface of Venus; each parabola is oriented with the open end toward the west and envelops an impact crater near its “focus.” In this paper, we use a model of parabola formation to fit the 58 venusian parabolas observed to date, as well as 9 circular features that are similar to the parabolas; we achieve good results for ∼65% of the 41 parabolas that meet the conditions for the model to apply. As a result of modeling the parabolas, we derive a quantitative description of the distribution of small (∼1 cm to ∼1 μm in diameter) impact ejecta over a planetary surface. Our results agree well with the distribution of fine impact ejecta derived for the Terrestrial impact crater Chicxulub. In addition, our results lead to a method for estimating the quantity of fine-grained material available on Venus for surface transport processes such as saltation.

The production of melt and vapor is an important process in impact cratering events. Because significant melting and vaporization do not occur in impacts at velocities currently achievable in the laboratory, a detailed study of the production of melt and vapor in planetary impact events is carried out with hydrocode simulations. Sandia's two-dimensional axisymmetric hydrocode CSQ was used to estimate the amount of melt and vapor produced for widely varying initial conditions: 10 to 80 km/sec for impact velocity, 0.2 to 10 km for the projectile radius. Runs with different materials demonstrate the material dependency of the final result. These results should apply to any size projectile (for given impact velocity and material), since the results can be dynamically scaled so long as gravity is unimportant in affecting the early-time flow. In contrast with the assumptions of previous analytical models, a clear difference in shape, impact-size dependence, and depth of burial has been found between the melt regions and the isobaric core. In particular, the depth of the isobaric core is not a good representation of the depth of the melt regions, which form deeper in the target. While near-surface effects cause the computed melt region shapes to look like “squashed spheres” the spherical shape is still a good analytical analog. One of the goals of melt production studies is to find proper scaling laws to infer melt production for any impact event of interest. We tested the point source limit scaling law for melt volumes (μ = 0.55–0.6) proposed by M. D. Bjorkman and K. A. Holsapple (1987,Int. J. Impact Eng.5, 155–163). Our results indicate that the point source limit concept does not apply to melt and vapor production. Rather, melt and vapor production follows an energy scaling law (μ = 0.67), in good agreement with previous results of T. J. Ahrens and J. D. O'Keefe [1977, inImpact and Explosion Cratering(D. J. Roddy, R. O. Pepin, and R. B. Merrill, Eds.), pp. 639–656, Pergamon Press, Elmsford, NY]. Finally we tested the accuracy of our melt production calculation against a terrestrial dataset compiled by R. A. F. Grieve and M. J. Cintala (1992,Meteorities27, 526–538). The hydrocode melt volumes are in good agreement with the estimated volumes of that set of terrestrial craters on crystalline basements. At present there is no good model for melt production from impact craters on sedimentary targets.

Prominent crater chains on Ganymede and Callisto are most likely the impact scars of comets tidally disrupted by Jupiter and are not secondary crater chains. We have examined the morphology of these chains in detail in order to place constraints on the properties of the comets that formed them and the disruption process. In these chains, intercrater spacing varies by no more than a factor of 2 and the craters within a given chain show almost no deviation from linearity (although the chains themselves are on gently curved small circles). All of these crater chains occur on or very near the Jupiter-facing hemisphere. For a given chain, the estimated masses of the fragments that formed each crater vary by no more than an order of magnitude. The mean fragment masses for all the chains vary by over four orders of magnitude (W. B. McKinnon and P. M. Schenk 1995, Geophys. Res. Lett. 13, 1829-1832), however. The mass of the parent comet for each crater chain is not correlated with the number of fragments produced during disruption but is correlated with the mean mass of the fragments produced in a given disruption event. Also, the larger fragments are located near the center of each chain. All of these characteristics are consistent with those predicted by disruption simulations based on the rubble pile cometary nucleus model (in which nuclei are composed on numerous small fragments weakly bound by self-gravity), and with those observed in Comet D/Shoemaker-Levy 9. Similar crater chains have not been found on the other icy satellites, but the impact record of disrupted comets on Callisto and Ganymede indicates that disruption events occur within the Jupiter system roughly once every 200 to 400 years.

Spectral modeling of the large infrared excess in the Spitzer IRS spectra of HD 172555 suggests that there is more than 10^19 kg of sub-micron dust in the system. Using physical arguments and constraints from observations, we rule out the possibility of the infrared excess being created by a magma ocean planet or a circumplanetary disk or torus. We show that the infrared excess is consistent with a circumstellar debris disk or torus, located at approximately 6 AU, that was created by a planetary scale hypervelocity impact. We find that radiation pressure should remove submicron dust from the debris disk in less than one year. However, the system's mid-infrared photometric flux, dominated by submicron grains, has been stable within 4 percent over the last 27 years, from IRAS (1983) to WISE (2010). Our new spectral modeling work and calculations of the radiation pressure on fine dust in HD 172555 provide a self-consistent explanation for this apparent contradiction. We also explore the unconfirmed claim that 10^47 molecules of SiO vapor are needed to explain an emission feature at 8 um in the Spitzer IRS spectrum of HD 172555. We find that unless there are 10^48 atoms or 0.05 Earth masses of atomic Si and O vapor in the system, SiO vapor should be destroyed by photo-dissociation in less than 0.2 years. We argue that a second plausible explanation for the 8 um feature can be emission from solid SiO, which naturally occurs in submicron silicate "smokes" created by quickly condensing vaporized silicate., Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal

A stress analysis of tectonic patterns near Venusian coronae is reported. Combined local corona stresses and uniform regional stresses are used to predict patterns of surface tectonic features. The patterns are compared to those of coronae on Magellan images to determine the regional stress and elastic lithospheric thickness about the coronae. Regional stresses of 0.1-0.6 kbar and elastic lithospheric thicknesses of 10 +/- 5 km are estimated for three specific coronae.

The hypervelocity impact that excavated the Stickney crater on Phobos is numerically modeled in order to understand the effects this collision had on the interior and surface of Phobos. The model assumes homogeneity prior to impact based on Fujiwara's (1991) results. Constitutive relations for water ice and basalt are applied in tandem models. Fracture energetics is used to show that the impact itself is sufficient to cause the cracks observed on Phobos. It is further shown that the Stickney impact itself could not have created large voids; thus, the low density of Phobos must either be compositional in nature or else the result of porosity at a scale sufficiently small to avoid scattering the impact energy substantially.

An evaluation is conducted of the possibility that the tidal disruption of a population of contact binary asteroids can account for terrestrial-impact 'doublet' craters. Detailed orbital integrations indicate that while such asteroids are often disrupted by tidal forces outside the Roche limit, the magnitude of the resulting separations is too small to account for the observed doublet craters. It is hypothesized that an initial population of km-scale earth-crossing objects encompassing 10-20 percent binaries must be responsible for doublet impacts, as may be verified by future observations of earth-approaching asteroids.

The SALE, or Simplified Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian code is presently used to calculate the antipodal pressures generated by large impacts on icy satellites and planets of various compositions and core sizes. While in a high density core/lower density mantle planet there is a refraction of the incident pressure wave away from the antipode by the core, resulting in a low antipodal pressure, a planet with a low velocity core with a higher-wave speed mantle will focus the waveform to maximize antipodal pressure. Specific impact basins on the moon, Mercury, and several icy satellites are modeled to ascertain whether the impacts were capable of producing the observed antipodal features.

Recent advances in the understanding of impacts on planets with an atmosphere have focussed mainly on the physics of the plume of melt and vapor ejected from the crater and its interaction with the ambient atmosphere. It is now becoming clear that such plumes, if sufficiently energetic, may expand at greater than escape velocity and thus eject a portion of the target planet's atmosphere into interplanetary space. Less energetic plumes can spew projectile material over a large portion of the impacted planet and may be responsible for the formation of the tektite and microtektite fields found on the Earth. We use a combination of scaling laws and direct hydrocode computations that include material strength to show that the impact energy needed to disperse an asteroid is greater than that to thoroughly shatter it for asteroids larger than about 400 m in radius. Thus, asteroids larger than this size should probably be considered to be gravitationally bound, but otherwise strengthless, rubble piles.

In previous papers in this series the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method (SPH) has been used to explore the conditions in which a major planetary collision may have been responsible for the formation of the Moon. In Paper II (W. Benz, W.L. Slattery, and A.G.W. Cameron 1987, Icarus 71, 30-45) it was found that the optimum conditions were obtained when the mass ratio of the impactor to the protoearth was 0.136. In the present paper we investigate the importance of the equation of state by running this optimum case several times and varying the equation of state and other related parameters. The two equations of state compared are the Tillotson (used in the previous papers) and the CHART D/CSQ ANEOS. Because of differences in these equations of state, including the fact that different types of rocks were used in association with each, it was not possible to prepare initial planetary models that were comparable in every respect, so several different simulations were necessary in which different planetary parameters were matched between the equations of state. We also used a new version of the SPH code. The results reaffirmed the previous principal conclusions: the collisions produced a disk of rocky material in orbit, with most of the material derived from the impacting object. These results indicate that the equation of state is not a critical factor in determining the amount of material thrown into orbit. This confirms the conclusions of Paper II that gravitational torques, and not pressure gradients, inject the orbiting mass. However, the way this mass is distributed in orbit is affected by the equation of state and the choice of rock material, the Tillotson equation for granite giving slightly larger mean orbital radius for the particles left in orbit than the ANEOS dunite for the same impact parameter. We also find, compared to Paper II, that in all subsequent cases the new SPH code leads to a slightly less extended prelunar accretion disk. We think this is due to the new shape adopted for the kernel. A few additional calculations were made to test the effects of increasing the impact parameter on the calculations, other parameters remaining unchanged. The motivation for this was that solar tides will have reduced the Earth-Moon angular momentum somewhat over the course of time. An increment of 6% in the angular momentum of the collision increases the amount of iron-free material in orbit and its mean orbital radius, but more than that leaves increasing amounts of iron in orbit (the iron has a small mean orbital radius). The debris from the destroyed impacting object tends to form a straight rotating bar which is very effective in transferring angular momentum. If the material near the end of the bar extends well beyond the Roche lobe, it may become unstable against gravitational clumping.

We have determined the global fracture patterns resulting from combinations of stresses due to tidal despinning and contraction or expansion. We find that Mercury's lineament pattern is consistent with a history of despinning and contraction. According to our model, the observed tectonic pattern implies that the despinning process reached completion before the planet ceased contracting. Our model predicts a stress due to contraction which is up to 1.8 times the maximum despinning stress on Mercury. The maximum contractional stress could be as large as 4 times the maximum despinning stress if the oldest fractures on the planet are N-S thrust faults in the equatorial region.

Studies of tectonic landforms associated with Caloris Basin on Mercury suggest that isostatic adjustment has occurred in response to basin excavation, and that the smooth plains inside Caloris were emplaced significantly before isostatic equilibrium was attained. Combined with dynamical considerations, this leads us to propose that the Caloris region is characterized by a circular negative or zero free air gravity anomaly centered inside Caloris, and an annular positive anomaly which coincides with extensive tracts of young smooth plains outside the basin. This proposed gravity pattern differs markedly from that associated with mare-filled basins on the Moon.

This paper describes the relationship between the shock wave produced by an impact and the excavation flow that opens the crater. The excavation flow velocity is shown to be a nearly constant fraction of the peak particle velocity in the wave. The existence of an excavation flow is due to thermodynamically irreversible processes in the shock. The excavation flow velocity is thus very sensitive to nonideal constitutive effects such as porosity, plastic yielding, and unreversed phase transformations. Cratering computations that do not model these effects correctly may produce misleading results.

A model for the ejection of material from an impact crater which links ejection velocity, fragment size, and shock pressure through a simplified stress-wave propagation and reflection scheme is presented. It is shown that a small amount of material (0.01 to 0.05 projectile mass) may be ejected at high velocity without suffering petrologically detectable shock pressures. The largest fragments ejected at any velocity are spalls that originate from the target planet's surface. The spall size is proportional to the radius of the primary impactor and the target tensile strength and inversely proportional to ejection velocity. The shock level in the spalls is low, typically half of the dynamic crushing strength of the rock. The model also predicts the aspect ratio of the spalled fragments, the angle of ejection, and the sizes and shock level of other fragments originating deeper in the target. Comparison with observational and experimental data shows generally good agreement.

Both geologic and free-air-gravity data suggest that the positive mass anomaly associated with the Tharsis volcanoes may have reoriented Mars' lithosphere by as much as 25°. Since Mars is oblate (with flattening ƒ ⋍0.005 ), rotation of the lithosphere over the equatorial bulge by 25° produces membrane stresses of several kilobars, large enough to initiate faulting. These stresses were first evaluated by F.A. Vening-Meinesz (1947, Trans. Amer. Geophys. Union 28, 1–61) who treated the lithosphere as a thin elastic shell. The fracture patterns which result from these stresses are determined by the relation between stress and faulting proposed by E.M. Anderson (1951, The Dynamics of Faulting, Oliver & Boyd, Edinburgh). Plots of the magnitude and direction of stresses in a reoriented planet show that near Tharsis the dominant fault type should be north-south- trending normal faults. This normal fault province is centered about 30°N latitude and extends about 45° east and west in longitude. Similar faults should occur at the antipodes, north of Hellas Planitia. The polar regions should be occupied by roughly north-south-trending thrust faults which extend close to the equator south of Tharsis and north of Hellas. The regions between Tharsis and Hellas are subject to compression on a NE-trending axis and extension along a NW axis east of Tharsis (west of Tharsis the directions are NW compression and NE extension), thus predicting a zone of NNW and ENE strike slip faults east of Tharsis (NNE and WNW west of Tharsis). Although these patterns, except for the north-south normal faults north of Tharsis, have not yet been recognized, the discovery of such a tectonic system of the same age as Tharsis would provide strong support for the reorientation idea. Stresses due to reorientation appear to have little to do with Valles Marineris, since the stress normal to the axis of the Valles is predicted to be compressive, whereas geologic evidence suggests extension.

The possibility that certain very young meteorites originated as impact melts on a large asteroid or asteroids is investigated. Calculations of the thermal evolution of impact melt show that the solidification time should be long enough to produce igneous or quasi-cumulate textures within rocks if the crater is large enough and if the initial clast concentration is low, at least in some portion of the melt sheet. The number of collisions within the asteroid belt which would produce craters of the requisite size is calculated. Using an estimate of the current size distribution of asteroids, it is found that over 3000 such collisions should have occurred during the lifetime of the solar system. Excavation and ejection of the solidified melt by a subsequent impact would be dynamically easy because of the low escape velocities of even the largest asteroids but improbable because of the depth that must be sampled. A second, sufficiently large impact is rare, so only the products of one such double event have been obtained up to now.

Tidal deformation of the lithosphere of a synchronously rotating planet or satellite produces stresses that may result in a distinctive tectonic pattern. The lithosphereis treated as a thin elastic shell which maintains the equilibrium shape of a tidally distorted body. Stresses develop as the equilibrium shape changes during orbital evolution. E. M. Anderson's theory of faulting is used to translate this stress pattern into a tectonic pattern of faults on the planet's surface ( The Dynamics of Faulting , Oliver & Boyd, Edinburgh, 1951). On a body such as the Moon, which has receded from the Earth, an originally large tidal bulge has collapsed. The predicted tectonic pattern includes N-S striking thrust faults over an area extending roughly 30° in latitude and longitude around the sub-Earth point and its antipode. The polar regions above roughly 70° latitude exhibit normal faults striking from the near side of the Moon toward the far side. Strike slip faults, with offsets consistent with east-west compression, occur near the limbs. Stress differences are largest at the equator on the limbs, and may have reached several hundreds bars over the last few billion years of the Moon's history. The existence of such a tectonic pattern on the Moon can only be resolved by photogeologic mapping. At present, there is little evidence of this pattern; however, the crucial evidence probably lies in the poorly mapped lunar polar regions. These tectonic patterns, which could provide geologic evidence for large tidal distortions, may also be present on the Galilean satellites of Jupiter.

This paper investigates the physics of meteoroid breakup in the atmosphere and its implications for the observed features of strewn fields. There are several effects which cause dispersion of the meteoroid fragments: gravity, differential lift of the fragments, bow shock interaction just after breakup, centripetal separation by a rotating meteoroid, and possibly a dynamical transverse separation resulting from the crushing deceleration in the atmosphere. Of these, we show that gravity alone can produce the common pattern in which the largest crater occurs at the downrange end of the scatter ellipse. The average lift-to-drag ratio of the tumbling fragments must be less than about 10 −3 , otherwise small fragments would produce small craters downrange of the main crater, and this is not generally observed. The cross-range dispersion is probably due to the combined effects of bow shock interaction, crushing deceleration, and possibly spinning of the meteoroid. A number of terrestrial strewn fields are discussed in the light of these ideas, which are formulated quantitatively for a range of meteoroid velocities, entry angles, and crushing strengths. It is found that when the crater size exceeds about 1 km, the separation between the fragments upon landing is a fraction of their own diameter, so that the crater formed by such a fragmented meteoroid is almost indistinguishable from that formed by a solid body of the same total mass and velocity.

The thickness and viscosity of a planetary lithosphere increase with time as the mantle cools, with a thicker lithosphere leading to the formation of one (or very few) irregular normal faults concentric to the crater. Since a gravity wave or tsunami induced by impact into a liquid mantle would result in both radial and concentric extension features, which are not observed in the case of the large impact structures on Ganymede and Callisto, an alternative mechanism is proposed in which the varying ice/silicate ratios, tectonic histories, and erosional mechanisms of the two bodies are considered to explain the subtle differences in thin lithosphere ring morphology between Ganymede and Callisto. It is concluded that the present lithosphere thickness of Ganymede is too great to permit the development of any rings.
