Ultralight axion-like particles $m_a \sim 10^{-22}$ eV, or Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM), behave comparably to cold dark matter (CDM) on cosmological scales and exhibit a kpc-size de Broglie wavelength capable of alleviating established (sub-)galactic-scale problems of CDM. Substructures inside an FDM halo incur gravitational potential perturbations, resulting in stellar heating sufficient to account for the Galactic disc thickening over a Hubble time, as first demonstrated by Church et al. We present a more sophisticated treatment that incorporates the full baryon and dark matter distributions of the Milky Way and adopts stellar disc kinematics inferred from recent Gaia, APOGEE, and LAMOST surveys. Ubiquitous density granulation and subhalo passages respectively drive inner disc thickening and flaring of the outer disc, resulting in an observationally consistent `U-shaped' disc vertical velocity dispersion profile with the global minimum located near the solar radius. The observed age-velocity dispersion relation in the solar vicinity can be explained by the FDM-substructure-induced heating and places an exclusion bound $m_a \gtrsim 0.4\times10^{-22}$ eV. We assess non-trivial uncertainties in the empirical core-halo relation, FDM subhalo mass function and tidal stripping, and stellar heating estimate. The mass range $m_a\simeq 0.5-0.7\times10^{-22}$ eV favoured by the observed thick disc kinematics is in tension with several exclusion bounds inferred from dwarf density profiles, stellar streams, and Milky Way satellite populations, which could be significantly relaxed due to the aforesaid uncertainties. We compare two state-of-the-art numerical codes to study the overall accuracy in modeling the intergalactic medium and reproducing Lyman-$\alpha$ forest observables for DESI and high-resolution data sets. The codes employ different approaches to solving both gravity and modeling the gas hydrodynamics. The first code, Nyx, solves the Poisson equation using the Particle-Mesh (PM) method and the Euler equations using a finite volume method. The second code, \CRKHACC, uses a Tree-PM method to solve for gravity, and an improved Lagrangian smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique, where fluid elements are modeled with particles, to treat the intergalactic gas. We compare the convergence behavior of the codes in flux statistics as well as the degree to which the codes agree in the converged limit. We find good agreement overall with differences being less than observational uncertainties, and a particularly notable $\lesssim$1\% agreement in the 1D flux power spectrum. This agreement was achieved by applying a tessellation methodology for reconstructing the density in \CRKHACC instead of using an SPH kernel as is standard practice. We show that use of the SPH kernel can lead to significant and unnecessary biases in flux statistics; this is especially prominent at high redshifts, $z \sim 5$, as the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest mostly comes from lower-density regions which are intrinsically poorly sampled by SPH particles., Comment: submitted to MNRAS

In this paper we present an extension to the $\texttt{matryoshka}$ suite of neural-network-based emulators. The new editions have been developed to accelerate EFTofLSS analyses of galaxy power spectrum multipoles in redshift space. They are collectively referred to as the $\texttt{EFTEMU}$. We test the $\texttt{EFTEMU}$ at the power spectrum level and achieve a prediction accuracy of better than 1\% with BOSS-like bias parameters and counterterms on scales $0.001\ h\ \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1} \leq k \leq 0.19\ h\ \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$. We also run a series of mock full shape analyses to test the performance of the $\texttt{EFTEMU}$ when carrying out parameter inference. Through these mock analyses we verify that the $\texttt{EFTEMU}$ recovers the true cosmology within $1\sigma$ at several redshifts ($z=[0.38,0.51,0.61]$), and with several noise levels (the most stringent of which is Gaussian covariance associated with a volume of $5000^3 \ \mathrm{Mpc}^3 \ h^{-3}$). We compare the mock inference results from the $\texttt{EFTEMU}$ to those obtained with a fully analytic EFTofLSS model and again find no significant bias, whilst speeding up the inference by three orders of magnitude. We present constraints on primordial B modes from large angular scale cosmic microwave background polarisation anisotropies measured with the Planck satellite. To remove Galactic polarised foregrounds, we use a Bayesian parametric component separation method, modelling synchrotron radiation as a power law and thermal dust emission as a modified blackbody. This method propagates uncertainties from the foreground cleaning into the noise covariance matrices of the maps. We construct two likelihoods: (i) a semi-analytical cross-spectrum-based likelihood-approximation scheme (momento) and (ii) an exact polarisation-only pixel-based likelihood (pixlike). Since momento is based on cross-spectra it is statistically less powerful than pixlike, but is less sensitive to systematic errors correlated across frequencies. Both likelihoods give a tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, that is consistent with zero from low multipole (2, 10 pages, 7 figures

We study systematics associated with estimating simple stellar population (SSP) parameters -- age, metallicity [M/H], $\alpha$-enhancement [$\alpha$/Fe] and IMF shape -- and associated $M_*/L$ gradients, of elliptical slow rotators (E-SRs), fast rotators (E-FRs) and S0s from stacked spectra of galaxies in the MaNGA survey. These systematics arise from (i) how one normalizes the spectra when stacking; (ii) having to subtract emission before estimating absorption line strengths; (iii) the decision to fit the whole spectrum or just a few absorption lines; (iv) SSP model differences (e.g. isochrones, enrichment, IMF). The MILES+Padova SSP models, fit to the H$_\beta$, $\langle$Fe$\rangle$, TiO$_{\rm 2SDSS}$ and [MgFe] Lick indices in the stacks, indicate that out to the half-light radius $R_e$: (a) ages are younger and [$\alpha$/Fe] values are lower in the central regions but the opposite is true of [M/H]; (b) the IMF is more bottom-heavy in the center, but is close to Kroupa beyond about $R_e/2$; (c) this makes $M_*/L$ about $2\times$ larger in the central regions than beyond $R_e/2$. While the models of Conroy et al. (2018) return similar [M/H] and [$\alpha$/Fe] profiles, the age and (hence) $M_*/L$ profiles can differ significantly even for solar abundances and a Kroupa IMF; different responses to non-solar abundances and IMF parametrization further compound these differences. There are clear (model independent) differences between E-SRs, E-FRs and S0s: younger ages and less enhanced [$\alpha$/Fe] values suggest that E-FRs and S0s are not SSPs, but relaxing this assumption is unlikely to change their inferred $M_*/L$ gradients significantly., Comment: 22 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We conduct the first case study towards developing optimal foreground mitigation strategies for neutral hydrogen (HI) intensity mapping using radio interferometers at low redshifts. A pipeline for simulation, foreground mitigation and power spectrum estimation is built, which can be used for ongoing and future surveys using MeerKAT and Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO). It simulates realistic sky signals to generate visibility data given instrument and observation specifications, which is subsequently used to perform foreground mitigation and power spectrum estimation. A quadratic estimator formalism is developed to estimate the temperature power spectrum in visibility space. Using MeerKAT telescope specifications for observations in the redshift range z~0.25-0.30 corresponding to the MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) survey, we present a case study where we compare different approaches of foreground mitigation. We find that component separation in visibility space provides a more accurate estimation of HI clustering comparing to foreground avoidance, with the uncertainties being 30 per cent smaller. Power spectrum estimation from image is found to be less robust with larger bias and more information loss when compared to estimation in visibility. We conclude that for z~0.25-0.30, the MIGHTEE survey will be capable of measuring the HI power spectrum from k~0.5 Mpc$^{-1}$ to k~10 Mpc$^{-1}$ with high accuracy. We are the first to show that, at low redshift, component separation in visibility space suppresses foreground contamination at large line-of-sight scales, allowing measurement of HI power spectrum closer to the foreground wedge, crucial for data analysis towards future detections., 20 pages, 19 figures. We use the small scales of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year-3 cosmic shear measurements, which are excluded from the DES Year-3 cosmological analysis, to constrain the baryonic feedback. To model the baryonic feedback, we adopt a baryonic correction model and use the numerical package \texttt{Baccoemu} to accelerate the evaluation of the baryonic nonlinear matter power spectrum. We design our analysis pipeline to focus on the constraints of the baryonic suppression effects, utilizing the implication given by a principal component analysis on the Fisher forecasts. Our constraint on the baryonic effects can then be used to better model and ameliorate the effects of baryons in producing cosmological constraints from the next generation large-scale structure surveys. We detect the baryonic suppression on the cosmic shear measurements with a $\sim 2 \sigma$ significance. The characteristic halo mass for which half of the gas is ejected by baryonic feedback is constrained to be $M_c > 10^{13.2} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$ (95\% C.L.). The best-fit baryonic suppression is $\sim 5\%$ at $k=1.0 {\rm Mpc}\ h^{-1}$ and $\sim 15\%$ at $k=5.0 {\rm Mpc} \ h^{-1}$. The eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS), with a sky area of 140 square degrees with depth equivalent to the equatorial patch of the final eROSITA all-sky survey, represents the largest continuous non-full-sky X-ray fields to-date, making it the premier data set for measuring the angular power spectrum. In this work, we measure the X-ray angular power spectrum of galaxy clusters and groups in the eFEDS field. We show that the measured power spectrum is consistent with past observations, including the ROSAT All Sky Survey, and the Chandra COSMOS and Bootes fields. The predictions of cluster gas halo model that is calibrated from Chandra observations is also consistent with the eFEDS power spectrum. While the eFEDS does not have large enough sky coverage to provide meaningful cosmological constraints, we predict that the X-ray power spectrum from the cycle 4 of the eROSITA All-Sky Survey (eRASS4) will provide constraints on $\Omega_M$ and $\sigma_8$ at the 10% level., Comment: 10 pages, 4 Figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. Precision analysis of galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lensing images provides a unique way of characterizing small-scale dark matter halos, and could allow us to uncover the fundamental properties of dark matter's constituents. Recently, gravitational imaging techniques made it possible to detect a few heavy subhalos. However, gravitational lenses contain numerous subhalos and line-of-sight halos, whose subtle imprint is extremely difficult to detect individually. Existing methods for marginalizing over this large population of sub-threshold perturbers to infer population-level parameters are typically computationally expensive, or require compressing observations into hand-crafted summary statistics, such as a power spectrum of residuals. Here, we present the first analysis pipeline to combine parametric lensing models and a recently-developed neural simulation-based inference technique called truncated marginal neural ratio estimation (TMNRE) to constrain the warm dark matter halo mass function cutoff scale directly from multiple lensing images. Through a proof-of-concept application to simulated data, we show that our approach enables empirically testable inference of the dark matter cutoff mass through marginalization over a large population of realistic perturbers that would be undetectable on their own, and over lens and source parameters uncertainties. To obtain our results, we combine the signal contained in a set of images with Hubble Space Telescope resolution. Our results suggest that TMNRE can be a powerful approach to put tight constraints on the mass of warm dark matter in the multi-keV regime, which will be relevant both for existing lensing data and in the large sample of lenses that will be delivered by near-future telescopes., 15 pages, 11 figures; Updated to match version published in MNRAS

We study evolution of single subhaloes with their masses of $\sim10^9 M_\odot$ in a Milky-Way-sized host halo for self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) models. We perform dark-matter-only N-body simulations of dynamical evolution of individual subhaloes orbiting its host by varying self-scattering cross sections (including a velocity-dependent scenario), subhalo orbits, and internal properties of the subhalo. We calibrate a gravothermal fluid model to predict time evolution in spherical mass density profiles of isolated SIDM haloes with the simulations. We find that tidal effects of SIDM subhaloes can be described with a framework developed for the case of collision-less cold dark matter (CDM), but a shorter typical time scale for the mass loss due to tidal stripping is required to explain our SIDM simulation results. As long as the cross section is less than $\sim10\, \mathrm{cm}^2/\mathrm{g}$ and initial states of subhaloes are set within a $2\sigma$-level scatter at redshifts of $\sim2$ predicted by the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, our simulations do not exhibit a prominent feature of gravothermal collapse in the subhalo central density for 10 Gyr. We develop a semi-analytic model of SIDM subhaloes in a time-evolving density core of the host with tidal stripping and self-scattering ram pressure effects. Our semi-analytic approach provides a simple, efficient and physically-intuitive prediction of SIDM subhaloes, but further improvements are needed to account for baryonic effects in the host and the gravothermal instability accelerated by tidal stripping effects., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. This study explores the gravitational lensing effects of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galaxy clusters. While the presence of central SMBHs in galaxies is firmly established, recent work from high-resolution simulations predict the existence of an additional population of wandering SMBHs. Though the masses of these SMBHs are a minor perturbation on the larger scale and individual galaxy scale dark matter components in the cluster, they can impact statistical lensing properties and individual lensed image configurations. Probing for these potentially observable signatures, we find that SMBHs imprint detectable signatures in rare, higher-order strong lensing image configurations although they do not manifest any statistically significant detectable evidence in either the magnification distribution or the integrated shear profile. Investigating specific lensed image geometries, we report that a massive, near point-like, potential of an SMBH causes the following detectable effects: (i) image splitting leading to the generation of extra images; (ii) positional and magnification asymmetries in multiply imaged systems; and (iii) the apparent disappearance of a lensed counter-image. Of these, image splitting inside the cluster tangential critical curve, is the most prevalent notable observational signature. We demonstrate these possibilities in two cases of observed giant arcs in $SGAS\,J003341.5+024217$ and $RX\,J1347.5-1145$, wherein specific image configurations seen can be reproduced with SMBHs. Future observations with high-resolution instrumentation (e.g. MAVIS-Very Large Telescope, MICADO-Extremely Large Telescope, and the upgraded ngVLA, along with data from the \textit{Euclid} \& \textit{Nancy Grace Roman} Space Telescopes and the Rubin LSST Observatory are likely to allow us to probe these unique yet rare SMBHs lensing signatures., 12 pages, 12 figures, submitted to MNRAS. MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) is an alternative to the standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) paradigm which proposes an alteration of Newton's laws of motion at low accelerations, characterized by a universal acceleration scale a_0. It attempts to explain observations of galactic rotation curves and predicts a specific scaling relation of the baryonic and total acceleration in galaxies, referred to as the Rotational Acceleration Relation (RAR), which can be equivalently formulated as a Mass Discrepancy Acceleration Relation (MDAR). The appearance of these relations in observational data such as SPARC has lead to investigations into the existence of similar relations in cosmological simulations using the standard {\Lambda}CDM model. Here, we report the existence of an RAR and MDAR similar to that predicted by MOND in {\Lambda}CDM using a large sample of galaxies extracted from a cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation (Magneticum). Furthermore, by using galaxies in Magneticum at different redshifts, a prediction for the evolution of the inferred acceleration parameter a_0 with cosmic time is derived by fitting a MOND force law to these galaxies. In Magneticum, the best fit for a_0 is found to increase by a factor of approximately 3 from redshift z = 0 to z = 2. Constraints on cosmological parameters are often distilled from sky surveys by fitting templates to summary statistics of the data that are motivated by a fiducial cosmological model. However, recent work has shown how to estimate the distance scale using templates that are more generic: the basis functions used are not explicitly tied to any one cosmological model. We describe a Bayesian framework for (i) determining how many basis functions to use and (ii) comparing one basis set with another. Our formulation provides intuition into how (a) one's degree of belief in different basis sets, (b) the fact that the choice of priors depends on basis set, and (c) the data set itself, together determine the derived constraints. The masses of galaxy clusters can be measured using data obtained exclusively from wide photometric surveys in one of two ways: directly from the amplitude of the weak lensing signal or, indirectly, through the use of scaling relations calibrated using binned lensing measurements. In this paper, we build on a recently proposed idea and implement an alternative method based on the radial profile of the satellite distribution. This technique relies on splashback, a feature associated with the apocentre of recently accreted galaxies that offers a clear window into the phase-space structure of clusters without the use of velocity information. We carry out this dynamical measurement using the stacked satellite distribution around a sample of luminous red galaxies in the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey and validate our results using abundance-matching and lensing masses. To illustrate the power of this measurement, we combine dynamical and lensing mass estimates to robustly constrain scalar–tensor theories of gravity at cluster scales. Our results exclude departures from General Relativity of the order of unity. We conclude the paper by discussing the implications for future data sets. Because splashback mass measurements scale only with the survey volume, stage-IV photometric surveys are well-positioned to use splashback to provide high-redshift cluster masses.

We introduce the radiative transfer code Sweep for the cosmological simulation suite arepo. Sweep is a discrete ordinates method in which the radiative transfer equation is solved under the infinite speed of light, steady state assumption by a transport sweep across the entire computational grid. Since arepo is based on an adaptive, unstructured grid, the dependency graph induced by the sweep dependencies of the grid cells is non-trivial. In order to solve the topological sorting problem in a distributed manner, we employ a task-based-parallelism approach. The main advantage of the sweep method is that the computational cost scales only with the size of the grid and is independent of the number of sources or the distribution of sources in the computational domain, which is an advantage for radiative transfer in cosmological simulations, where there are large numbers of sparsely distributed sources. We successfully apply the code to a number of physical tests such as the expansion of H ii regions, the formation of shadows behind dense objects, the scattering of light, and its behaviour in the presence of periodic boundary conditions. In addition, we measure its computational performance with a focus on highly parallel, large-scale simulations.

Wide, deep, blind continuum surveys at submillimetre/millimetre (submm/mm) wavelengths are required to provide a full inventory of the dusty, distant Universe. However, conducting such surveys to the necessary depth, with sub-arcsec angular resolution, is prohibitively time-consuming, even for the most advanced submm/mm telescopes. Here, we report the most recent results from the ALMACAL project, which exploits the 'free' calibration data from the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) to map the lines of sight towards and beyond the ALMA calibrators. ALMACAL has now covered 1,001 calibrators, with a total sky coverage around 0.3 deg2, distributed across the sky accessible from the Atacama desert, and has accumulated more than 1,000h of integration. The depth reached by combining multiple visits to each field makes ALMACAL capable of searching for faint, dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs), with detections at multiple frequencies to constrain the emission mechanism. Based on the most up-to-date ALMACAL database, we report the detection of 186 DSFGs with flux densities down to S870um ~ 0.2mJy, comparable with existing ALMA large surveys but less susceptible to cosmic variance. We report the number counts at five wavelengths between 870um and 3mm, in ALMA bands 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, providing a benchmark for models of galaxy formation and evolution. By integrating the observed number counts and the best-fitting functions, we also present the resolved fraction of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) and the CIB spectral shape. We measure the local correlation between radio emission and Compton-$y$ signal across two galaxy clusters, Abell~399 and Abell~401, using maps from the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) + \Planck. These datasets allow us to make the first measurement of this kind at $\sim$arcminute resolution. We find that the radio brightness scales as $F_{\mathrm{radio}} \propto y^{1.5}$ for Abell~401 and $F_{\mathrm{radio}} \propto y^{2.8}$ for Abell~399. Furthermore, using \XMM data, we derive a sublinear correlation between radio and X-ray brightness for both the clusters ($F_{\mathrm{radio}} \propto F_{\rm X}^{0.7}$). Finally, we correlate the Compton-$y$ and X-ray data, finding that an isothermal model is consistent with the cluster profiles, $y \propto F_{\rm X}^{0.5}$. By adopting an isothermal--$\beta$ model, we are able, for the first time, to jointly use radio, X-ray, and Compton-$y$ data to estimate the scaling index for the magnetic field profile, $B(r) \propto n_{\mathrm{e}}(r)^{\eta}$ in the injection and re-acceleration scenarios. Applying this model, we find that the combined radio and Compton-$y$ signal exhibits a significantly tighter correlation with the X-ray across the clusters than when the datasets are independently correlated. We find $\eta \sim 0.6{-}0.8$. These results are consistent with the upper limit we derive for the scaling index of the magnetic field using rotation measure values for two radio galaxies in Abell~401. We also measure the radio, Compton-$y$, and X-ray correlations in the filament between the clusters but conclude that deeper data are required for a convincing determination of the correlations in the filament., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Main Journal

The recent rapid growth of the black hole (BH) catalog from gravitational waves (GWs), has allowed us to study the substructure of black hole mass function (BHMF) beyond the simplest Power-Law distribution. However, the BH masses inferred from binary BH merger events, may be systematically 'brightened' or 'dimmed' by the gravitational lensing effect. In this work, we investigate the impact of gravitational lensing on the BHMF inference considering the detection of the third-generation GW detector -- the Einstein Telescope (ET). We focus on high redshift, $z=10$, in order to obtain the upper limits of this effect. We use Monte Carlo (MC) method to simulate the data adopting 3 original BHMFs under Un-Lensed and Lensed scenarios, then recover the parameters of BHMFs from the mock data, and compare the difference of results, respectively. We found that all the parameters are well recovered within one standard deviation(std., 1$\sigma$), and all 3 BHMF models are reconstructed within 68\% credible interval, suggesting that lensing would not change the main structure drastically, even at very high redshifts and with high precision of ET. And the modest influence beyond $50M_{\odot}$, depends on the modeling of the high mass tail or substructure of BHMF. We conclude that the impact of lensing on BHMF inference with ET can be safely ignored in the foreseeable future. Dixon et al., We use stacked spectra of the host galaxies of photometrically identified Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) to search for correlations between Hubble diagram residuals and the spectral properties of the host galaxies. We perform weak lensing tomographic peak studies using the first-year shear data from Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) survey. The effective area used in our analyses after field selection, mask and boundary exclusions is $\sim 58 \deg^2$. The source galaxies are divided into low- and high-redshift bins with $0.2\le z_p\le0.85$ and $0.85\le z_p\le1.5$, respectively. We utilize our halo-based theoretical peak model including the projection effect of large-scale structures to derive cosmological constraints from the observed tomographic high peak abundances with the signal-to-noise ratio in the range of $\nu_{\rm N}=[3.5,5.5]$. These high peaks are closely associated with the lensing effects of massive clusters of galaxies. Thus the inclusion of their member galaxies in the shear catalog can lead to significant source clustering and dilute their lensing signals. We account for this systematic effect in our theoretical modelling. Additionally, the impacts of baryonic effects, galaxy intrinsic alignments, as well as residual uncertainties in shear and photometric redshift calibrations are also analyzed. Within the flat $\Lambda$CDM model, the derived constraint is $S_8=0.758_{-0.076}^{+0.033}$ and $0.768_{-0.057}^{+0.030}$ with the source clustering information measured from the two cluster catalogs, CAMIRA and WZL, respectively. The asymmetric uncertainties are due to the different degeneracy direction of $(\Omega_{\rm m}, \sigma_8)$ from high peak abundances comparing to that from the cosmic shear two-point correlations which give rise approximately the power index $\alpha=0.5$. Fitting to our constraints, we obtain $\alpha\approx 0.38$ and $\Sigma_8=0.772_{-0.032}^{+0.028}$ (CAMIRA) and $0.781_{-0.033}^{+0.028}$ (WZL). In comparison with the results from non-tomographic peak analyses, the $1\sigma$ uncertainties on $\Sigma_8$ are reduced by a factor of $\sim1.3$., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The next generation of detectors will detect gravitational waves from binary neutron stars at cosmological distances, for which around a thousand electromagnetic follow-ups may be observed per year. So far, most work devoted to the expected cosmological impact of these standard sirens employed them only as distance indicators. Only recently their use as tracers of clustering, similar to what already proposed for supernovae, has been studied. Focusing on the expected specifications of the Einstein Telescope (ET), we forecast here the performance on cosmological parameters of future standard sirens as both distance and density indicators, with emphasis on the linear perturbation growth index and on spatial curvature. We improve upon previous studies in a number of ways: a more detailed analysis of available telescope time, the inclusion of more cosmological and nuisance parameters, the Alcock-Paczynski correction, the use of sirens also as both velocity and density tracers, and a more accurate estimation of the distance posterior. We find that the analysis of the clustering of sirens improves the constraints on $H_0$ by 30% and on $\Omega_{k0}$ by over an order of magnitude, with respect to their use merely as distance indicators. With 5 years of joint ET and Rubin Observatory follow-ups we could reach precision of 0.1 km/s/Mpc in $H_0$ and 0.02 in $\Omega_{k0}$ using only data in the range $0, Comment: v2: minor clarifications added; matches version to appear in MNRAS

Models for cosmic ray (CR) dynamics fundamentally depend on the rate of CR scattering from magnetic fluctuations. In the ISM, for CRs with energies ~MeV-TeV, these fluctuations are usually attributed either to 'extrinsic turbulence' (ET) - a cascade from larger scales - or 'self-confinement' (SC) - self-generated fluctuations from CR streaming. Using simple analytic arguments and detailed live numerical CR transport calculations in galaxy simulations, we show that both of these, in standard form, cannot explain even basic qualitative features of observed CR spectra. For ET, any spectrum that obeys critical balance or features realistic anisotropy, or any spectrum that accounts for finite damping below the dissipation scale, predicts qualitatively incorrect spectral shapes and scalings of B/C and other species. Even if somehow one ignored both anisotropy and damping, observationally-required scattering rates disagree with ET predictions by orders-of-magnitude. For SC, the dependence of driving on CR energy density means that it is nearly impossible to recover observed CR spectral shapes and scalings, and again there is an orders-of-magnitude normalization problem. But more severely, SC solutions with super-Alfvenic streaming are unstable. In live simulations, they revert to either arbitrarily-rapid CR escape with zero secondary production, or to bottleneck solutions with far-too-strong CR confinement and secondary production. Resolving these fundamental issues without discarding basic plasma processes requires invoking different drivers for scattering fluctuations. These must act on a broad range of scales with a power spectrum obeying several specific (but plausible) constraints., 36 pages, 7 figures. The velocity profile of galaxies around voids is a key ingredient for redshift space distortion (RSD) measurements made using the void-galaxy correlation function. In this paper we use simulations to test whether the velocity profile of the tracers used to find the voids matches the velocity profile of the dark matter around these voids. A mismatch is expected and found in the inner part of voids, where tracers are very sparse. We discuss how this difference is caused by a selection effect where the void centre positions are correlated to the particular realization of the sparse tracers and their spatial distribution. In turn, this then affects the RSD void-galaxy correlation analysis. We show this by evaluating the Jacobian of the real to redshift space mapping using the tracer or matter velocity profile. Differences of the order of 20\% in the velocity profile translate into differences of the order of few percent in the Jacobian. This small discrepancy propagates to the monopole and quadrupole of the void-tracer correlation function, producing modifications of comparable magnitude to those from changes in $f\sigma_8$ at the level of the statistical uncertainties from current analyses., Comment: Author's Accepted Manuscript

The discovery of faint FR~I radio jets in the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 5322 is reported here using 144 MHz LOFAR image. The jets have an angular extent of $\sim40$ arcmin or a projected physical extent of $\sim350$ kpc. The faint jets remain well collimated and disappear in the intergalactic medium, without any visible hotspot or radio lobes. The jets detected up to $\sim20$ kpc extent at higher frequencies are relatively bright within the optical extent of the galaxy but become faint abruptly outside, where detection is made only in the LOFAR image. The total radio luminosity of the galaxy at 144 MHz is estimated to be $3.7(\pm0.4)\times10^{22}$ W Hz$^{-1}$. The 144 MHz radio luminosity of the faint jets outside the optical extent is estimated to be $7.1(\pm2.0)\times10^{21}$ W Hz$^{-1}$. The extent of the jets for its radio luminosity is abnormally large when compared to the general population of radio galaxies. It makes NGC 5322 a member of a rare population of radio galaxies, previously not detected in other radio surveys. A combined effect of stellar core depletion and low-density environment around the jets, inferred from previous studies in other wave-bands, resulting into weak entrainment of surrounding material to the jets could be responsible for its large size despite a low radio luminosity., Comment: MNRAS submitted; 5 pages, 4 figures; comments welcome

In view of the recent measurement of $H_{0}$ from HST and SH0ES team, we explore the possibility of existence of a negative cosmological constant (AdS vacua in the dark energy sector) in the Universe. In this regard, we consider quintessence fields on top of a negative cosmological constant and compare such construction with $\Lambda$CDM model using a different combination of CMB, SnIa, BAO and $H_{0}$ data. Various model comparison estimators show that quintessence models with a negative $\Lambda$ is either preferred over $\Lambda$CDM or performs equally as $\Lambda$CDM model. Primordial gravitational waves with extremely low frequency are expected to origin from inflation in the early Universe. The detection of such kind of gravitational waves is of great significance to verify the inflationary theory and determine the energy scale of inflation. B-mode of polarization of cosmic microwave background shows to be a promising probe of extremely low frequency primordial gravitational wave. In order to find a complementary observational feature induced by primordial gravitational wave with extremely low frequency, we propose an alternative way of detection by investigating the effect of primordial gravitational wave with extremely low frequency on a gravitational lens system with a non-aligned source-deflector-observer configuration. The results show that, with a series of chosen parameters, gravitational lens system with perturbation from extremely low frequency primordial gravitational wave could induce time delay which could deviate from the time delay deduced from theoretical model as much as about one hundred percent, meaning that gravitational lens system with a non-aligned configuration could serve as a potential long-base-line detector of extremely low frequency primordial gravitational wave., 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Next-generation wide-field spectroscopic surveys will observe the infall regions around large numbers of galaxy clusters with high sampling rates for the first time. Here we assess the feasibility of extracting the large-scale cosmic web around clusters using forthcoming observations, given realistic observational constraints. We use a sample of 324 hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations of massive galaxy clusters from TheThreeHundred project to create a mock-observational catalogue spanning $5R_{200}$ around 160 analogue clusters. These analogues are matched in mass to the 16 clusters targetted by the forthcoming WEAVE Wide-Field Cluster Survey (WWFCS). We consider the effects of the fibre allocation algorithm on our sampling completeness and find that we successfully allocate targets to 81.7 $\% \pm$ 1.3 of the members in the cluster outskirts. We next test the robustness of the filament extraction algorithm by using a metric, $D_{\text{skel}}$, which quantifies the distance to the filament spine. We find that the median positional offset between reference and recovered filament networks is $D_{\text{skel}} = 0.13 \pm 0.02$ Mpc, much smaller than the typical filament radius of $\sim$ 1 Mpc. Cluster connectivity of the recovered network is not substantially affected. Our findings give confidence that the WWFCS will be able to reliably trace cosmic web filaments in the vicinity around massive clusters, forming the basis of environmental studies into the effects of pre-processing on galaxy evolution., 18 pages, 14 figures. We investigate how the environment affects the assembly history of massive galaxies. For that purpose, we make use of SHARDS and HST spectro-photometric data, whose depth, spectral resolution, and wavelength coverage allow to perform a detailed analysis of the stellar emission as well as obtaining unprecedentedly accurate photometric redshifts. This expedites a sufficiently accurate estimate of the local environment and a robust derivation of the star formation histories of a complete sample of 332 massive galaxies ($\mathrm{>10^{10}M_{\odot}}$) at redshift $1\leq z \leq 1.5$ in the GOODS-N field. We find that massive galaxies in this redshift range avoid the lowest density environments. Moreover, we observed that the oldest galaxies in our sample with with mass-weighted formation redshift $\mathrm{\overline{z}_{M-w} \geq 2.5}$, avoid the highest density regions, preferring intermediate environments. Younger galaxies, including those with active star formation, tend to live in denser environments ($\Sigma = \mathrm{5.0_{1.1}^{24.8}\times 10^{10}M_{\odot}Mpc^{-2}}$). This behavior could be expected if those massive galaxies starting their formation first would merge with neighbors and sweep their environment earlier. On the other hand, galaxies formed more recently ($\overline{z}_{M-w} < 2.5$) are accreted into large scale structures at later times and we are observing them before sweeping their environment or, alternatively, they are less likely to affect their environment. However, given that both number and mass surface densities of neighbor galaxies is relatively low for the oldest galaxies, our results reveal a very weak correlation between environment and the first formation stages of the earliest massive galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present angular power spectra and cosmological parameter constraints derived from the Planck PR4 (NPIPE) maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background. NPIPE, released by the Planck Collaboration in 2020, is a new processing pipeline for producing calibrated frequency maps from Planck data. We have created new versions of the CamSpec likelihood using these maps and applied them to constrain LCDM and single-parameter extensions. We find excellent consistency between NPIPE and the Planck 2018 maps at the parameter level, showing that the Planck cosmology is robust to substantial changes in the mapmaking. The lower noise of NPIPE leads to ~10% tighter constraints, and we see both smaller error bars and a shift toward the LCDM values for beyond-LCDM parameters including Omega_K and A_Lens., Comment: 17 pages, 20 figures, updated to match accepted version

In general relativity (GR), the internal dynamics of a self-gravitating system under free-fall in an external gravitational field should not depend on the external field strength. Recent work has claimed a statistical detection of an `external field effect' (EFE) using galaxy rotation curve data. We show that large uncertainties in rotation curve analyses and inaccuracies in published simulation-based external field estimates compromise the significance of the claimed EFE detection. We further show analytically that a qualitatively similar statistical signal is, in fact, expected in a $\Lambda$-cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) universe without any violation of the strong equivalence principle. Rather, such a signal arises simply because of the inherent correlations between galaxy clustering strength and intrinsic galaxy properties. We explicitly demonstrate the effect in a baryonified mock catalog of a $\Lambda$CDM universe. Although the detection of an EFE-like signal is not, by itself, evidence for physics beyond GR, our work shows that the $\textit{sign}$ of the EFE-like correlation between the external field strength and the shape of the radial acceleration relation can be used to probe new physics: e.g., in MOND, the predicted sign is opposite to that in our $\Lambda$CDM mocks., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures; v2: minor changes and added discussion, accepted in MNRAS

We present results from nine simulations that compare the standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter cosmology ($\Lambda$CDM) with counterfactual universes, for approximately $100\,{\rm Gyr}$ using the Enzo simulation code. We vary the value of $\Lambda$ and the fluctuation amplitude to explore the effect on the evolution of the halo mass function (HMF), the intergalactic medium (IGM) and the star formation history (SFH). The distinct peak in star formation rate density (SFRD) and its subsequent decline are both affected by the interplay between gravitational attraction and the accelerating effects of $\Lambda$. The IGM cools down more rapidly in models with a larger $\Lambda$ and also with a lower $\sigma_8$, reflecting the reduced SFRD associated with these changes -- although changing $\sigma_8$ is not degenerate with changing $\Lambda$, either regarding the thermal history of the IGM or the SFH. However, these induced changes to the IGM or ionizing background have little impact on the calculated SFRD. We provide fits for the evolution of the SFRD in these different universes, which we integrate over time to derive an asymptotic star formation efficiency. Together with Weinberg's uniform prior on $\Lambda$, the estimated probability of observers experiencing a value of $\Lambda$ no greater than the observed value is 13%, substantially larger than some alternative estimates. Within the Enzo model framework, then, observer selection within a multiverse is able to account statistically for the small value of the cosmological constant, although $\Lambda$ in our universe does appear to be at the low end of the predicted range., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, MNRAS: MN-22-1662-MJ.R1

We study the structural properties like the gravitational mass, radius and tidal deformability of dark matter (DM) admixed strange quark stars (SQSs). For the purpose we consider the vector MIT Bag model to describe the strange quark matter (SQM) and investigate the possible presence of accreted DM in the SQSs consequently forming DM admixed SQSs. We introduce feeble interaction between SQM and the accreted fermionic DM via a vector dark boson mediator. Considering the present literature, in the context of possible presence of DM in SQSs, this work is the first to consider interaction between DM and SQM in the DM admixed SQSs. The mass of the DM fermion ($m_{\chi}$) and the vector mediator ($m_{\xi}$) and the coupling ($y_{\xi}$) between them are determined in accordance with the constraint from Bullet cluster and the present day relic abundance, respectively. We find that the presence of DM reduces both the mass and radius of the star compared to the no-DM case. The massive the DM fermion, the lower the values of maximum mass and radius of the DM admixed SQSs. For the chosen values of $m_{\chi}$ and corresponding values of $m_{\xi}$ and $y_{\xi}$, the computed structural properties of the DM admixed SQSs satisfy all the various present day astrophysical constraints.We obtain massive DM admixed SQSs configurations consistent with the GW190814 observational data. The wavelet scattering transform (WST) has recently gained attention in the context of large-scale structure studies, being a possible generator of summary statistics encapsulating non-Gaussianities beyond the reach of the conventional power spectrum. This work examines the three-dimensional solid harmonic WST in the context of a three-dimensional line-intensity mapping measurement to be undertaken by current and proposed phases of the CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP). The WST coefficients demonstrate interpretable behaviour in the context of noiseless CO line-intensity simulations. The contribution of the cosmological $z\sim3$ signal to these coefficients is also detectable in principle even in the Pathfinder phase of COMAP. Using the peak-patch method to generate large numbers of simulations and incorporating observational noise, we numerically estimate covariance matrices and show that careful choices of WST hyperparameters and rescaled or reduced coefficient sets are both necessary to keep covariances well-conditioned. Fisher forecasts show that even a reduced `shapeless' set of $\ell$-averaged WST coefficients show constraining power that can exceed that of the power spectrum alone even with similar detection significance. The full WST could improve parameter constraints even over the combination of the power spectrum and the voxel intensity distribution, showing that it uniquely encapsulates shape information about the line-intensity field. The structural and dynamic properties of the dark matter halos, though an important ingredient in understanding large-scale structure formation, require more conservative particle resolution than those required by halo mass alone in a simulation. This reduces the parameter space of the simulations, more severely for high-redshift and large-volume mocks which are required by the next-generation large sky surveys. Here, we incorporate redshift and cosmology dependence into an algorithm that assigns accurate halo properties such as concentration, spin, velocity, and spatial distribution to the sub-resolution haloes in a simulation. By focusing on getting the right correlations with halo mass and local tidal anisotropy $\alpha$ measured at $4 \times$ halo radius, our method will also recover the correlations of these small scale structural properties with the large-scale environment, i.e., the halo assembly bias at all scales greater than $5 \times$ halo radius. We find that the distribution of halo properties is universal with redshift and cosmology. By applying the algorithm to a large volume simulation $(600 h^{-1}{\rm Mpc})$, we can access the $30-500$ particle haloes, thus gaining an order of magnitude in halo mass and two to three orders of magnitude in number density at $z=2-4$. We study the effect of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) and baryons on the shape of early-type galaxies (ETGs) and their dark matter haloes, comparing them to the predictions of the cold dark matter (CDM) scenario. We use five hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations of haloes hosting ETGs ($M_{\rm vir}\sim 10^{13}M_{\odot}$ and $M_{*}\sim10^{11}M_{\odot}$), simulated in CDM and a SIDM model with constant cross-section of $\sigma_T/m_\chi = 1\ \mathrm{cm}^2 \mathrm{g}^{-1}$. We measure the three-dimensional and projected shapes of the dark matter haloes and their baryonic content using the inertia tensor and compare our measurements to the results of three $HST$ samples of gravitational lenses and $Chandra$ and $XMM-Newton$ X-ray observations. We find that the inclusion of baryons greatly reduces the differences between CDM and a SIDM, together with the ability to draw constraints based on shapes. Lensing measurements reject the predictions of CDM dark-matter-only simulations and prefer one of the hydro scenarios. When we consider the total sample of lenses, observational data prefer the CDM hydro scenario. The shapes of the X-ray emitting gas are compatible with observational results in both hydro runs, with CDM predicting higher elongations only in the very centre. Contrary to previous claims at the scale of elliptical galaxies, we conclude that both CDM and our SIDM model can still explain observed shapes once we include baryons in the simulations. Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are powerful tools for measuring the expansion history of the universe, but the impact of dust around SNe Ia remains unknown and is a critical systematic uncertainty. One way to improve our empirical description of dust is to analyse highly reddened SNe Ia ($E(B-V)>0.4$, roughly equivalent to the fitted SALT2 light-curve parameter $c>0.3$). With the recently released Pantheon+ sample, there are 57 SNe Ia that were removed because of their high colour alone (with colours up to $c=1.61$), which can provide enormous leverage on understanding line-of-sight $R_V$. Previous studies have claimed that $R_V$ decreases with redder colour, though it is unclear if this is due to limited statistics, selection effects, or an alternative explanation. To test this claim, we fit two separate colour-luminosity relationships, one for the main cosmological sample ($c0.3$) SNe Ia. We find the change in the colour-luminosity coefficient to be consistent with zero. Additionally, we compare the data to simulations with different colour models, and find that the data prefers a model with a flat dependence of $R_V$ on colour over a declining dependence. Finally, our results strongly support that line-of-sight $R_V$ to SNe Ia is not a single value, but forms a distribution., Accepted to MNRAS, updating to match accepted version. 11 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables

Most cosmic shear analyses to date have relied on summary statistics (e.g. $\xi_+$ and $\xi_-$). These types of analyses are necessarily sub-optimal, as the use of summary statistics is lossy. In this paper, we forward-model the convergence field of the Universe as a lognormal random field conditioned on the observed shear data. This new map-based inference framework enables us to recover the joint posterior of the cosmological parameters and the convergence field of the Universe. Our analysis properly accounts for the covariance in the mass maps across tomographic bins, which significantly improves the fidelity of the maps relative to single-bin reconstructions. We verify that applying our inference pipeline to Gaussian random fields recovers posteriors that are in excellent agreement with their analytical counterparts. At the resolution of our maps -- and to the extent that the convergence field can be described by the lognormal model -- our map posteriors allow us to reconstruct \it all \rm summary statistics (including non-Gaussian statistics). We forecast that a map-based inference analysis of LSST-Y10 data can improve cosmological constraints in the $\sigma_8$--$\Omega_{\rm m}$ plane by $\approx 30\%$ relative to the currently standard cosmic shear analysis. The relation between the integrated thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) $y$-decrement versus halo mass ($Y$--$M$) can potentially constrain galaxy formation models, if theoretical and observational systematics can be properly assessed. We investigate the $Y$--$M$ relation in the SIMBA and IllustrisTNG-100 cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, quantifying the effects of feedback, line-of-sight projection, and beam convolution. We find that SIMBA's AGN jet feedback generates strong deviations from self-similar expectations for the $Y$--$M$ relation, especially at $M_{500}, 14 pages, 7 figures. We present the first comparison between properties of clusters of galaxies detected by the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) and the XMM Cluster Survey (XCS). We have compared, in an ensemble fashion, properties from the eFEDS X-ray cluster catalogue with those from the Ultimate XMM eXtragaLactic (XXL) survey project (XXL-100-GC). We find the distributions of redshift and X-ray temperature ($T_{\rm X}$) to be broadly similar between the two surveys, with a larger proportion of clusters above 4 keV in the XXL-100-GC sample. We find 62 eFEDS cluster candidates with XMM data (eFEDS-XMM sample); 10 do not have good enough XMM data to confirm or deny, 11 are classed as sample contaminants, and 4 have their X-ray flux contaminated by another source. The majority of eFEDS-XMM sources have a longer exposure in XMM than eFEDS, and the majority of eFEDS positions are within 100 kpc of XCS positions. Our eFEDS-XCS sample of 37 clusters is used to calculate minimum sample contamination fractions of ${\sim}$18% and ${\sim}$9% in the eFEDS X-ray and optically confirmed samples respectively, in general agreement with eFEDS findings. We compare 29 X-ray luminosities ($L_{\rm X}$) measured by eFEDS and XCS, which are in excellent agreement. Eight clusters have a $T_{\rm X}$ measured by XMM and eROSITA, and we find that XMM temperatures are 25$\pm$9% larger than their eROSITA counterparts. Finally, we construct $L_{\rm X}$ - $T_{\rm X}$ scaling relations based on eFEDS and XCS measurements, which are in tension; the tension is decreased when we measure a third scaling relation with calibrated XCS temperatures., 20 pages (13 + 7 appendices), 16 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present observational constraints on the galaxy-halo connection, focusing particularly on galaxy assembly bias, from a novel combination of counts-in-cylinders statistics, $P(N_{\rm{CIC}})$, with the standard measurements of the projected two-point correlation function, $w_{\rm{p}}(r_{\rm{p}})$, and number density, $n_{\rm{gal}}$, of galaxies. We measure $n_{\rm{gal}}$, $w_{\rm{p}}(r_{\rm{p}})$ and $P(N_{\rm{CIC}})$ for volume-limited, luminosity-threshold samples of galaxies selected from SDSS DR7, and use them to constrain halo occupation distribution (HOD) models, including a model in which galaxy occupation depends upon a secondary halo property, namely halo concentration. The mm-Wave Interferometric Survey of Dark Object Masses (WISDOM) is probing supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galaxies across the Hubble sequence via molecular gas dynamics. We present the first WISDOM study of a luminous infrared galaxy with an active galactic nuclei (AGN): Fairall 49. We use new ALMA observations of the CO(2-1) line with a spatial resolution of about 80 pc together with ancillary HST imaging. We reach the following results: (1) The CO kinematics are well described by a regularly rotating gas disk with a radial inflow motion, suggesting weak feedback on the cold gas from both AGN and starburst activity; (2) The dynamically inferred SMBH mass is 1.6 +/- 0.4 (rnd) +/- 0.8 (sys) x 10^8 Msun, assuming that we have accurately subtracted the AGN and starburst light contributions, which have a luminosity of about 10^9 Lsun; (3) The SMBH mass agrees with the SMBH-stellar mass relation but is about 50 times higher than previous estimates from X-ray variability; (4) The dynamically inferred molecular gas mass is 30 times smaller than that inferred from adopting the Galactic CO-to-H_2 conversion factor (X_CO) for thermalised gas, suggesting low values of X_CO; (5) the molecular gas inflow rate increases steadily with radius and may be as high as 5 Msun/yr. We have applied the method of star counts with Wolf diagrams to determine the interstellar extinction in five Galactic cirri in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82. For this purpose, we have used the photometry of stars in the GALEX NUV filter and the photometry of red dwarfs in five SDSS bands and four SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey DR2 bands. We have identified the cirri as sky regions with an enhanced infrared emission from the Schlegel+1998 map. The extinction in them has been calculated relative to the nearby comparison regions with a reduced emission. The results for different filters agree well, giving the range of distances and the extinction law for each cirrus. The distances in the range 140--415 pc found are consistent with the 3D reddening maps. In the range between the $B$ and $V$ filters the extinctions found are consistent with the estimates from Schlegel+1998 for the Cardelli+1989 extinction law with $R_\mathrm{V}=3.1$. However, the extinctions found for all of the filters are best described not by the Cardelli+1989 extinction law with some $R_\mathrm{V}=3.1$, but by the inverse proportionality of the extinction and wavelength with its own coefficient for each cirrus. In one of the cirri our results suggest a very slight decrease in extinction with wavelength, i.e., a large contribution of gray extinction. In the remaining cirri a manifestation of gray extinction is not ruled out either. We reconstruct the extragalactic dispersion measure \ -- redshift relation (${\rm DM_E}-z$ relation) from well-localized fast radio bursts (FRBs) using Bayesian inference method. Then the ${\rm DM_E}-z$ relation is used to infer the redshift and energy of the first CHIME/FRB catalog. We find that the distributions of extragalactic dispersion measure and inferred redshift of the non-repeating CHIME/FRBs follow cut-off power law, but with a significant excess at the low-redshift range. We apply a set of criteria to exclude events which are susceptible to selection effect, but find that the excess at low redshift still exists in the remaining FRBs (which we call Gold sample). The cumulative distributions of fluence and energy for both the full sample and the Gold sample do not follow the simple power law, but they can be well fitted by the bent power law. We study stochastic gravitational waves from cosmic strings generated in an ultraviolet-complete model for pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone dark matter with a hidden $\mathrm{U(1)}$ gauge symmetry. The dark matter candidate in this model can naturally evade direct detection bounds and easily satisfy other phenomenological constraints. The bound on the dark matter lifetime implies an ultraviolet scale higher than $10^9~\mathrm{GeV}$. The spontaneous $\mathrm{U(1)}$ symmetry breaking at such a high scale would induce cosmic strings with high tension, resulting in a stochastic gravitational wave background with a high energy density. We investigate the constraints from current gravitational wave experiments as well as the future sensitivity. From high resolution cosmological simulations of the Local Group in realistic environment, namely HESTIA simulations, we study the position and kinematic deviations that may arise between the disc of a Milky Way (or Andromeda)-like galaxy and its halo. We focus on the 3-dimensional analysis of the centres of mass (COM). The study presents two parts. We first consider individual particles to track down the very nature and amplitude of the physical deviations of the COM with respect to the distance from the disc centre. Dark matter dominates the behaviour of the COM of all particles at all distances. But the total COM is also very close to the COM of stars. In the absence of a significant merger, the velocity offsets are marginal (10 km/s) but the positional shifts can be important compared to the disc characteristics (>10 kpc). In the event of a massive accretion, discrepancies are of the same order as the recent finding for the MW under the Magellanic Clouds influence. In a second part, the accent is put on the study of various populations of subhaloes and satellites. We show that satellites properly represent the entire subhalo population. There exists strong mismatch in phase space between the satellites' COM and the host disc. Moreover, the results are highly inhomogeneous between the simulations, and thus between the accretion histories. The High Latitude Spectroscopic Survey (HLSS) is the reference baseline spectroscopic survey for NASA's Nancy Grace Roman space telescope, measuring redshifts of $\sim 10$M H$\alpha$ emission line galaxies over a $2000$ deg$^2$ footprint at $z=1-2$. In this work, we use a realistic Roman galaxy mock catalogue to explore optimal phenomenological modeling of the measured power spectrum. We consider two methods for modeling the redshift-space distortions (Kaiser squashing and another with a window function on $\beta$ that selects out the coherent radial infall pairwise velocities, $M_A$ and $M_B$, respectively), two models for the nonlinear impact of baryons that smears the BAO signal (a fixed ratio between the smearing scales in the perpendicular and parallel dimensions and another where these smearing scales are kept as a free parameters, P$_{dw}(k|k_*)$ and P$_{dw}(k|\Sigma_\perp,\Sigma_\parallel)$, respectively), and two analytical emulations of nonlinear growth (one employing the halo model and another formulated from simulated galaxy clustering of a semi-analytical model, $F_{HM}$ and $F_{SAM}$, respectively). We find that the best model combination employing $F_{HM}$ is $P_{dw}(k|k_*)*F_{HM}*M_B$, while the best combination employing $F_{SAM}$ is $P_{dw}(k|k_*)*F_{SAM}*M_B$, which leads to unbiased measurements of cosmological parameters. We compare these to the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure perturbation theory model $P_{EFT}(k|\Theta)$, and find that our simple phenomenological models are comparable across the entire redshift range for $k_{max}=0.25$ and $0.3$ $h$/Mpc. We use the latest results from Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) surveys targeting the ionized carbon [CII] 158 $\mu$m and oxygen [OIII] 88 $\mu$m lines, in combination with data-driven predictions for the evolution of neutral hydrogen (HI), to illustrate the prospects for intensity mapping cross-correlations between 21 cm and submillimetre surveys over $z \sim 5-7$. We work with a dataset including the ALPINE and REBELS surveys for [CII] over $z \sim 4.5-7$, and ALMA [OIII] detections over $z \sim 6-9$. The resultant evolution of the [CII] luminosity - halo mass relation is well described by a double power law at high redshifts, with the best-fitting parameters in good agreement with the results of simulations. The data favour secure detections of the auto-power spectrum of [CII] at all redshifts with an enhanced Fred Young Submillimetre Telescope (FYST)-like configuration. Such an experiment, along with the Murchinson Widefield Array (MWA) will be able to measure the 21 cm - [CII] cross-correlation power with a signal-to-noise ratio of a few tens to a few hundreds. We find that a balloon-borne experiment improving upon the Experiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) should be able to detect the 21 cm - [OIII] cross-correlation with the MWA and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA)-LOW out to $z \sim 7$. Gaia DR3 parallaxes are used to calibrate preliminary period--luminosity relations of O-rich Mira variables in the 2MASS $J$, $H$ and $K_s$ bands using a probabilistic model accounting for variations in the parallax zeropoint and underestimation of the parallax uncertainties. The derived relations are compared to those measured for the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy, globular cluster members and the subset of Milky Way Mira variables with VLBI parallaxes. The Milky Way linear $JHK_s$ relations are slightly steeper and thus fainter at short period than the corresponding LMC relations suggesting population effects in the near-infrared are perhaps larger than previous observational works have claimed. Models of the Gaia astrometry for the Mira variables suggest that, despite the intrinsic photocentre wobble and use of mean photometry in the astrometric solution of the current data reduction, the recovered parallaxes should be on average unbiased but with underestimated uncertainties for the nearest stars. The recommended Gaia EDR3 parallax zeropoint corrections evaluated at $\nu_\mathrm{eff}=1.25\,\mu\mathrm{m}^{-1}$ require minimal ($\lesssim5\,\mu\mathrm{as}$) corrections for redder five-parameter sources, but over-correct the parallaxes for redder six-parameter sources, and the parallax uncertainties are underestimated, at most by a factor $\sim1.6$ at $G\approx12.5\,\mathrm{mag}$. The derived period--luminosity relations are used as anchors for the Mira variables in the Type Ia host galaxy NGC 1559 to find $H_0=(73.7\pm4.4)\,\mathrm{km\,s}^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$., Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Bose-Einstein-condensed dark matter (BEC-DM), also called scalar field dark matter (SFDM), has become a popular alternative to the standard, collisionless cold dark matter (CDM) model, due to its long-held potential to resolve the small-scale crisis of CDM. Halos made of BEC-DM have been modelled using the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation coupled to the Poisson equation; the so-called GPP equations of motion. These equations are based on fundamental microphysical conditions that need to be fulfilled in order for the equations to be valid in the first place, related to the diluteness of the DM gas and the nature of the particle scattering model. We use these conditions in order to derive the implications for the BEC-DM parameters, the 2-particle self-interaction coupling strength $g$ and the particle mass $m$. We compare the derived bounds with the constraint that results from the assumption of virial equilibrium of the central cores of halos, deriving a relationship that connects $g$ and $m$. We find that the GPP conditions are greatly fulfilled, for BEC-DM particle masses of interest, if such models also obey the virial condition that turns out to be the strongest constraint. We also derive the implications for the elastic scattering cross section (per particle mass) in BEC-DM halos, based on the scattering model of GPP, and find a huge range of possible values, depending on the self-interaction regime.
