We present grism spectra of emission line galaxies (ELGs) from 0.6-1.6 microns from the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). These new infrared grism data augment previous optical Advanced Camera for Surveys G800L (0.6-0.95 micron) grism data in GOODS South, extending the wavelength coverage well past the G800L red cutoff. The ERS grism field was observed at a depth of 2 orbits per grism, yielding spectra of hundreds of faint objects, a subset of which are presented here. ELGs are studied via the Ha, [O III ], and [OII] emission lines detected in the redshift ranges 0.2 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 1.6, 1.2 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 2.4 and 2.0 less than or equal to z less than or equal to 3.6 respectively in the G102 (0.8-1.1 microns; R approximately 210) and C141 (1.1-1.6 microns; R approximately 130) grisms. The higher spectral resolution afforded by the WFC3 grisms also reveals emission lines not detectable with the G800L grism (e.g., [S II] and [S III] lines). From these relatively shallow observations, line luminosities, star formation rates, and grism spectroscopic redshifts are determined for a total of 25 ELGs to M(sub AB)(F098M) approximately 25 mag. The faintest source in our sample with a strong but unidentified emission line--is MAB(F098M)=26.9 mag. We also detect the expected trend of lower specific star formation rates for the highest mass galaxies in the sample, indicative of downsizing and discovered previously from large surveys. These results demonstrate the remarkable efficiency and capability of the WFC3 NIR grisms for measuring galaxy properties to faint magnitudes.

The near-space environment of the stratosphere is far superior to terrestrial sites for optical and infrared observations. New balloon technologies will enable flights and safe recovery of 2-ton payloads at altitudes of 35 km for 100 days and longer. The combination of long flights and superb observing conditions make it possible to undertake science programs that otherwise could only be done from orbit. We propose to fly an "Ultra-Hubble" Stratospheric Telescope (UHST) equipped with a coronagraphic camera and active optics at 35 km to search for planets around 200 of the nearest stars. This ULDB mission will establish the frequency of solar-type planetary systems, and provide targets to search for earth-like planets.

We have observed MyCn18, a young Planetary Nebulae with HST/WFPC2 and presented the observational results in an earlier paper. Here we present a detailed spatial/kinematical model of H alpha emission from the nebula.

As part of both the Early Release Observations fromthe Hubble Space Telescope and the Key PRoject on the Extragalctic Distance Scale, we have obtained multi-wavelength BVR WFPC2 images for the face-on Virgo cluster spiral galaxy M11 = NGC 4321.

We are conducting a search for emission-line objects at large redshifts, ostensibly young and forming galaxies. Our method is to search for strong line emission, in particular Ly-alpha, using two techniques: a direct, narrow-band imaging search using a Fabry-Perot interferometer; and a serendipitous long-slit spectroscopic search. Assuming that none of the faint candidates found so far are actually primeval galaxies, we can set the strongest limits to date on the surface density of Ly-alpha-luminous primeval galaxies on the sky. Some of the faint emission line galaxies detected in our survey at z roughly 0.5 - 1 may be representative of the faint blue galaxy population detected in deep continuum imaging surveys.

Application of high spectral resolution, Earth-based Fabry-Perot spectroscopy to the study of planetary atmospheres, for which current topics are outer planet HD and H2 spectra (atmospheric structure, D/H ratio), Mars CO2, CO, O2, and H2O spectra (atomspheric photochemistry), Venus H2O and HDO, associated laboratory spectroscopy (especially H2 overtone bands, HDO) was accomplished. Monochromatic charge coupled device (CCD) imaging photometry of the Jovian nebula, with images taken in rapid sequence among the diagnostic spectral lines of ionized sulfur species, provided self-supporting snapshots of the Jupiter/Io plasma conditions (spatially resolved electron and ion densities and temperatures), covering the post-Voyager period from 1981 and leading up to the Galileo tour in the early 1990s. High spectral resolution Fabry-Perot/charge coupled device (CCD) imaging of comets (OI, CI, and H2O(+) velocity maps and spatial distriubtions), and Io's charge exchanged neutral jet was studied.

Uranus and Jupiter HD/H2 spectra determine bulk D/H ratios which are significantly different from theoretical expectations, with the Uranus D/H about half the Jovian value. Feasibility of Mars photochemistry study with a PEPSIOS spectrometer was demonstrated with visible band O2, H2O, and CO2 spectra; and near infrared (1.57 micron) spectra of CO and CO2; and NASA/IRTF observations have been proposed in support of the Mars Observer mission objectives. Analysis of monochromatic images clearly resolve the azimuthal and radial structure in the Jovian nebula (ion partitioning, temperature structure, ion/neutral interactions), adding a unique and important post-Voyager perspective and providing a baseline for forthcoming Galileo experiments. Simultaneous ground based and IUE observations of Jovian nebula are under analysis. Doppler resolved image sequences (data cubes) of Io sodium neutrals clearly isolate the high velocity charge exchange jet, a sensitive ground-based probe of the tenuous neutral atmosphere of Io.

A number of Fabry-Perot (FP) coating designs have been developed specifically for IR astronomy. These have been optimized for uniform reflectance over five contiguous spectral ranges of particular astronomical interest between 1 and 5 microns. Wavelength coverage in individual designs is given by (maximum wavelength/minimum wavelength) greater than 1.4, over which reflective finesse is maintained near 35. Consideration has been made for the peculiar requirements of FP coatings. Visual alignment and testing of the FP has been made convenient by bringing the reflective finesse of the coating at 632.8 nm to the same value as the main IR reflection band. For example, a calcium fluoride FP can be aligned and tested at 632.8-nm He-Ne laser line, with the assurance of a corresponding finesse and spectral resolving power over its IR (3.6-5.1-micron) range. In addition, the FP can be used for IR spectroscopy while being simultaneously monitored and/or actively controlled at the laser wavelength. The potential for the coating itself to degrade the effective surface flatness of the FP through either mechanical stress or thickness nonuniformities is minimized by reducing to a minimum the number and thickness of coating layers. Several of these coatings have been fabricated and are actively in use at a number of observatories.

Observations of H alpha, H20(+), and emission lines from comet Kohoutek were made. Analyses of H alpha line profiles and line intensities indicate that the mean outflow velocity of the hydrogen atoms was 7.8 + or - 0.2 km s(-1) and that the hydrogen atom production rate varied for comet-sun distances between 1 AU and 0.4 AU. The identification of an H20(+) emission feature in certain H alpha scans indicates that the H20(+) ions were moving in a tailward direction with a velocity of 20 to 40 km s(-1) with respect to the comet nucleus. An upper limit of 1 part in 100 was found for the D/H ratio in the cometary atomic hydrogen cloud.
