We present International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) & Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST STIS) observations of the symbiotic nova V1016 Cyg through the period 1978 – 2000. Four spectra at different times revealing the changes in line fluxes are presented. The outflow velocity of the emitting region was calculated to be 900–2000 km s−1 (FWHM). The reddening of V1016 Cyg was determined from 2200 A absorption feature to be E (B-V) = 0.36 ± 0.02. We calculated the fluxes of CIV 1550 A & CIII] 1909 A emission lines produced in a stellar wind from the hot white dwarf. We determined the average wind mass loss rate to be ∼2.3 × 10–6 M⊙, the average temperature of the emitting region to be ∼1.3 × 105 K, and an average ultraviolet luminosity to be ∼2 × 1035 erg s−1. The results show that there are modulations of line fluxes with time. We attributed these spectral modulations to the changes of density and temperature in the emitting region as a result of the variable stellar wind.

Spectral observations made with the long slit of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board Hubble have been used to construct spectral maps of the FUV Jovian aurora. They reveal that the amount of absorption by overlying methane shows significant spatial variations. In this report, we examine the relationship between the auroral brightness of the unabsorbed H2 emission that is proportional to the precipitated electron energy flux, and the ultraviolet color ratio, a proxy of the mean electron energy. We find that it varies significantly between the different components of the aurora and in the polar region. Although no global dependence can be found, we show that the two quantities are better organized in some auroral components such as regions of the main aurororal emission. By contrast, the dependence of the electron characteristic energy in high-latitude and diffuse aurora regions on the auroral energy input is generally more scattered. We conclude that the various auroral components are associated with different electron acceleration processes, some of which are not governed by a simple relation linking the value of a field-aligned acceleration potential with the parallel currents flowing from the ionosphere.

We analyzed two observations obtained in Jan. 2013, consisting of spatial scans of the jovian north ultraviolet aurora with the HST Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) in the spectroscopic mode. The color ratio (CR) method, which relates the wavelength-dependent absorption of the FUV spectra to the mean energy of the precipitating electrons, allowed us to determine important characteristics of the entire auroral region. The results show that the spatial distribution of the precipitating electron energy is far from uniform. The morning main emission arc is associated with mean energies of around 265 keV, the afternoon main emission (kink region) has energies near 105 keV, while the 'flare' emissions poleward of the main oval are characterized by electrons in the 50-85. keV range. A small scale structure observed in the discontinuity region is related to electrons of 232 keV and the Ganymede footprint shows energies of 157 keV. Interestingly, each specific region shows very similar behavior for the two separate observations.The Io footprint shows a weak but undeniable hydrocarbon absorption, which is not consistent with altitudes of the Io emission profiles (~900 km relative to the 1 bar level) determined from HST-ACS observations. An upward shift of the hydrocarbon homopause of at least 100 km is required to reconcile the high altitude of the emission and hydrocarbon absorption. The relationship between the energy fluxes and the electron energies has been compared to curves obtained from Knight's theory of field-aligned currents. Assuming a fixed electron temperature of 2.5 keV, an electron source population density of ~800 m-3 and ~2400 m-3 is obtained for the morning main emission and kink regions, respectively. Magnetospheric electron densities are lowered for the morning main emission (~600 m-3) if the relativistic version of Knight's theory is applied.Lyman and Werner H2 emission profiles, resulting from secondary electrons produced by precipitation of heavy ions in the 1-2 MeV/u range, have been applied to our model. The low CR obtained from this emission suggests that heavy ions, presumably the main source of the X-ray aurora, do not significantly contribute to typical UV high latitude emission.

Since its launch in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has served as a platform with unique capabilities for remote observations of comets in the far-ultraviolet region of the spectrum. Successive generations of imagers and spectrographs have seen large advances in sensitivity and spectral resolution enabling observations of the diverse properties of a representative number of comets during the past 25 years. To date, four comets have been observed in the far-ultraviolet by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS), the last spectrograph to be installed in HST, in 2009: 103P/Hartley 2, C/2009 P1 (Garradd), C/2012 S1 (ISON), and C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy). COS has unprecedented sensitivity, but limited spatial information in its 2.5 arcsec diameter circular aperture, and our objective was to determine the CO production rates from measurements of the CO Fourth Positive system in the spectral range of 1400 to 1700 A. In the two brightest comets, nineteen bands of this system were clearly identified. The water production rates were derived from nearly concurrent observations of the OH (0,0) band at 3085 A by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). The derived CO/H2O production rate ratio ranged from ~0.3% for Hartley 2 to ~22% for Garradd. In addition, strong partially resolved emission features due to multiplets of S I, centered at 1429 A and 1479 A, and of C I at 1561 A and 1657 A, were observed in all four comets. Far-ultraviolet observations of Ganymede's atmospheric emissions were obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) onboard of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) on several occasions between 1998 and 2014. We analyze the Lyman-α emission from four HST campaigns in order to constrain the abundance and variation of atomic hydrogen in Ganymede's atmosphere. We apply a forward model that estimates surface reflection and resonant scattering in an escaping corona of the solar Lyman-α flux, taking into account the effects of the hydrogen in the interplanetary medium. The atmospheric emissions around Ganymede's disk derived for the observations taken between 1998 and 2011 are consistent with a hydrogen corona in the density range of (5–8) × 103 cm−3 at the surface. The hydrogen density appears to be generally stable in that period. In 2014, Ganymede's corona brightness is approximately 3 times lower during two observations of Ganymede's trailing hemisphere and hardly detectable at all during two observations of the leading hemisphere. We also investigate extinction of Ganymede's coronal emissions in the Earth's upper atmosphere or geocorona. For small Doppler shifts, resonant scattering in the geocorona of the moon corona emissions can effectively reduce the brightness observed by HST. In the case of the 2014 leading hemisphere observations, an estimated extinction of 80% might explain the non-detection of Ganymede's hydrogen corona. Geocoronal extinction might also explain a previously detected hemispheric difference from Callisto's hydrogen corona.

We present the ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopic evolution of a tidal disruption event (TDE) for the first time. After the discovery of the nearby TDE iPTF16fnl, we obtained a series of observations with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The dominant emission features closely resemble those seen in the UV spectra of the TDE ASASSN-14li and are also similar to those of N-rich quasars. However, there is significant evolution in the shape and central wavelength of the line profiles over the course of our observations, such that at early times the lines are broad and redshifted, while at later times the lines are significantly narrower and peak near the wavelengths of their corresponding atomic transitions. Like ASASSN-14li, but unlike N-rich quasars, iPTF16fnl shows neither MgII$\lambda 2798$\AA\ nor CIII]$\lambda 1909$\AA\ emission features. We also present optical photometry and spectroscopy, which suggest that the complex HeII profiles observed in the optical spectra of many TDEs are in part due to the presence of NIII and CIII Wolf-Rayet features, which can potentially serve as probes of the far-UV when space-based observations are not possible. Finally, we use Swift XRT and UVOT observations to place strong limits on the X-ray emission and determine the characteristic temperature, radius, and luminosity of the emitting material. We present a spectroscopic study of two intermediate polar systems, AO Psc and V1223 Sgr observed with the Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST STIS) and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) during the period 1980–2000. The reddening of two systems is determined from the 2200 A feature. The ultraviolet emission lines are originating in the accretion disk as a result of existing an extra component of emission in the EUV/soft X-ray range with luminosity comparable to the accretion luminosity which reprocessed to produce the observed ultraviolet line strengths. Different spectra for both systems showing the variations in line fluxes at different orbital phases are presented. We concentrated on calculating the line fluxes of C IV 1550 A & He II 1640 A emission lines. From HST and IUE data, we derived an accretion luminosities and an accretion rates for two systems. Our results show that there are variations in line fluxes, accretion luminosities and accretion rates with time for two systems. These variations are attributed to the variations of both density and temperature as a result of a changing rate of mass transfer from the secondary star to the white dwarf. These results from the IUE and HST observations are consistent with the models of Ko et al. (Astrophys. J., 457:363K, 1996).

Images of auroral emissions at far ultraviolet (FUV, 122–200 nm) wavelengths are useful tools with which to study magnetospheric–ionospheric coupling, as the scattered sunlight background in this region is low, allowing both dayside and nightside auroras to be imaged simultaneously. The ratio of intensities between certain FUV emission lines or regions can be used to characterise the precipitating particles responsible for auroral emissions, and hence is a useful diagnostic of magnetospheric dynamics. Here, we describe how the addition of simple transmission filters to a compact broadband imager design allows far ultraviolet emission ratios to be deduced while also providing large-scale instantaneous images of the aurora. The low mass and volume of such an instrument would make it well-suited for both small satellite Earth-orbiting missions and larger outer planet missions from which it could be used to characterise the tenuous atmospheres observed at several moons, as well as studying the auroral emissions of the gas giants. We present a study to investigate the accuracy of a technique to allow emission line ratio retrieval, as applied to the OI 130.4 nm and 135.6 nm emissions at Ganymede. The ratio of these emissions provides information about the atmospheric composition, specifically the relative abundances of O and O2. Using modelled FUV spectra representative of Ganymede׳s atmosphere, based on observations by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), we find that the accuracy of the retrieved ratios is a function of the magnitude of the ratio, with the best measurements corresponding to a ratio of ~ 1.3 .

Far ultraviolet spectral observations have been made with the Hubble Space Telescope in the time-tag mode using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) long slit. The telescope was slewed in such a way that the slit projection scanned from above the polar limb down to midlatitudes, allowing us to build up the first spectral maps of the FUV Jovian aurora. The shorter wavelengths are partly absorbed by the methane layer overlying part of the auroral emission layer. The long-wavelength intensity directly reflects the precipitated energy flux carried by the auroral electrons. Maps of the intensity ratio of the two spectral regions have been obtained by combining spectral emissions in two wavelength ranges. They show that the amount of absorption by methane varies significantly between the different components of the aurora and inside the main emission region. Some of the polar emissions are associated with the hardest precipitation, although the auroral regions of strong electron precipitation do not necessarily coincide with the highest electron energies. Outputs from an electron transport model are used to create maps of the distribution of the characteristic electron energies. Using model atmospheres adapted to auroral conditions, we conclude that electron energies range between a few tens to several hundred keV. Comparisons of derived energies are in general agreement with those calculated from magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling models, with values locally exceeding the standard model predictions. These results will provide useful input for three-dimensional modeling of the distribution of particle heat sources into the high-latitude Jovian upper atmosphere.

The C II] feature at ~2325 Angstrom is very prominent in the spectra of T Tauri stars (TTSs). This feature is a quintuplet of semiforbidden transitions excited at electron temperatures around 10,000 K that, together with the nearby Si II] and Fe II] features, provides a reliable optically thin tracer for accurate measurement of the plasma properties in the magnetospheres of TTSs. The spectra of 20 (out of 27) TTSs observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have good enough signal to noise ratio (S/N) at the C II] wavelength. For these stars we have determined electron densities (ne) and temperatures (Te) in the line emission region as well as the profile broadening (sigma). For most of the stars in the sample (17) we obtain 10^{4.1} < Te < 10^{4.5} K and 10^{8} < ne < 10^{12} cm^{-3}. These stars have suprathermal line broadening (35 < sigma < 165 km s^{-1}), except TW Hya and CY Tau with thermal line broadening. Both C II] line luminosity and broadening are found to correlate with the accretion rate. Line emission seems to be produced in the magnetospheric accretion flow, close to the disk. There are three exceptions: DG Tau, RY Tau and FU Ori. The line centroids are blueshifted indicating that the line emission in these three stars is dominated by the outflow., 13 pages, 15 figures, published in MNRAS minor changes

We summarize the results of our long-term program to study the kinematics, morphology, and physical properties of warm partially ionized interstellar gas located within 100 pc of the Sun. Using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and other spectrographs on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we measure radial velocities of neutral and singly ionized atoms that identify comoving structures (clouds) of warm interstellar gas. We have identified 15 of these clouds located within 15 pc of the Sun. Each of them moves with a different velocity vector, and they have narrow ranges of temperature, turbulence, and metal depletions. We compute a three-dimensional model for the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC), in which the Sun is likely embedded near its edge, and the locations and shapes of the other nearby clouds. These clouds are likely separated by ionized Stromgren sphere gas produced by ϵ CMa, Sirius B, and other hot white dwarfs. We propose that some of these partially ionized clouds are shells of the Stromgren spheres.

Ultraviolet spectra of IP Peg and DW UMa observed with Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph & Faint Object Spectrograph (HST STIS FOS) and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellites were analyzed during the period between 1989–1994 and 1985–2004. Different profiles of two systems showing variations of line fluxes at different orbital phases are presented. Both IP Peg and DW UMa are characterized by emission lines in high, intermediate and low states. DW UMa is characterized by absorption lines in an unusual low state. This paper focuses on the C IV emission line at 1550 A produced in an accretion disk for two systems ( Saito et al., 2005 , Knigge et al., 2000 ), by calculating spectral line fluxes. Our results show that there are significant variations of line fluxes with time for two systems. The variations of line fluxes are attributed to the variations of both density and temperature as a result of a changing rate of mass transfer from the secondary star to the white dwarf ( Saito et al., 2005 , Knigge et al., 2000 ). These results from the IUE and HST observations support a white dwarf model atmospheres of IP Peg and DW UMa producing sufficient UV flux for orbital modulations.

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) contains the only currently operating coronagraph in space that is not trained on the Sun. In an era of extreme-adaptive-optics-fed coronagraphs, and with the possibility of future space-based coronagraphs, we re-evaluate the contrast performance of the STIS CCD camera. The 50CORON aperture consists of a series of occulting wedges and bars, including the recently commissioned BAR5 occulter. We discuss the latest procedures in obtaining high-contrast imaging of circumstellar disks and faint point sources with STIS. For the first time, we develop a noise model for the coronagraph, including systematic noise due to speckles, which can be used to predict the performance of future coronagraphic observations. Further, we present results from a recent calibration program that demonstrates better than 10 − 6 point-source contrast at 0.6″, ranging to 3 × 10 − 5 point-source contrast at 0.25″. These results are obtained by a combination of subpixel grid dithers, multiple spacecraft orientations, and postprocessing techniques. Some of these same techniques will be employed by future space-based coronagraphic missions. We discuss the unique aspects of STIS coronagraphy relative to ground-based adaptive-optics-fed coronagraphs.

[1] The auroral emission close to the foot of Io's magnetic flux tube has been known for over a decade to be one of the key parameters characterizing the electrodynamic interaction between the satellite and Jupiter's magnetosphere. Ten years of observations of Io's magnetic footprint brightness have been conducted via far ultraviolet imaging by two instruments, the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and the Advanced Camera for Surveys, on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The variation of Io's magnetic footprint brightness was found to have a strong correlation with the satellite's location in system III longitude. The persistent pattern of the variation of the brightness of the auroral emission at Io's magnetic footprint with longitude over 10 years of observations implies that the footprint emissions are primarily determined by processes other than temporal variations of the plasma torus. The changing location of Io in the plasma torus with longitude corresponds to changes in centrifugal latitude and to the plasma density in the vicinity of Io, likely affecting the electrodynamic interaction at the satellite. To test this, quantitative models of electron density and the generated power near Io are applied to simulate the observed footprint brightness variation pattern. We find, however, that the longitudinal variations in plasma conditions needed to produce changes in the electrodynamic interaction comparable to the observed modulation of the footprint emissions would require an unrealistically colder plasma torus than previously measured. We quantify the additional energy needed to produce the asymmetric emission peaks at 110° and 270° longitudes.

We present results from a coordinated IR-to-X-ray spectral campaign of the QSO IRAS 13349+2438. Optical spectra reveal extreme Eigenvector-1 characteristics, but the H-beta line width argues against a NLS1 classification; we refine z=0.10853 based on [O III]. We estimate a BH mass=10^9 Msun using 2 independent methods (H-beta line width & SED fits). Blue-shifted absorption (-950km/s & -75km/s) is seen for the 1st time in STIS UV spectra from Ly-alpha, NV, & CIV. The higher velocity UV lines are coincident with the lower-ionisation (xi~1.6) X-ray warm absorber lines. A dusty multiple ionization absorber blueshifted by 700-900km/s is required to fit the X-ray data. Theoretical models comparing different ionising SEDs reveal that a UV-inclusive (i.e., the accretion disc) ionising continuum strongly impacts conclusions for the thermodynamic stability of the warm absorber. Specific to IRAS13349, an Xray-UV ionising SED favors a continuous distribution of ionisation states in a smooth flow (this paper), versus discrete clouds in pressure equilibrium (work by others where UV is omitted). Direct dust detections are seen in both the IR: PAH emission at (7.7 & 11.3)micron which may also be blended with forsterite, and (10 & 18)micron silicate emission, and X-rays: iron dust with a dust-to-gas ratio > 90%. We develop a geometrical model whereby the QSO nuclear region is viewed through the upper atmosphere of an obscuring torus. This sight line is obscured by dust that blocks a direct view of the UV/optical emission region but is largely transparent in X-rays since the gas is ionised. In our model, 20% of the intrinsic UV/optical continuum is scattered into our sight line by the far wall of an obscuring torus. An additional 2.4% of the direct light, which likely dominates the UV emission, is Thomson-scattered into our line-of-sight by another off-plane component of highly ionized gas., Accepted for publication to MNRAS 2013 January 8. We present transmission spectroscopy of the hot-Jupiter WASP-31b using FORS2 on the VLT during two primary transits. The observations cover a wavelength range of $\approx$400-840nm. The light curves are corrupted by significant systematics, but these were to first order invariant with wavelength and could be removed using a common-mode correction derived from the white light curves. We reach a precision in the transit depth of $\approx$140 ppm in 15 nm bins, although the precision varies significantly over the wavelength range. Our FORS2 observations confirm the cloud-deck previously inferred using HST/STIS. We also re-analyse the HST/STIS data using a Gaussian process model, finding excellent agreement with earlier measurements. We reproduce the Rayleigh scattering signature at short wavelengths ($\lesssim$5300 $\AA$) and the cloud-deck at longer wavelengths. However, our FORS2 observations appear to rule out the large potassium feature previously detected using STIS, yet it is recovered from the HST/STIS data, although with reduced amplitude and significance ($\approx$2.5$\sigma$). The discrepancy between our results and the earlier STIS detection of potassium ($\approx$4.3$\sigma$) is either a result of telluric contamination of the ground-based observations, or an underestimate of the uncertainties for narrow-band features in HST/STIS when using linear basis models to account for the systematics. Our results further demonstrate the use of ground-based multi-object spectrographs for the study of exoplanet atmospheres, and highlight the need for caution in our interpretation of narrow-band features in low-resolution spectra of hot-Jupiters., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

10 pages, 5 Figures; International audience; The aurorae of Uranus were recently detected in the far ultraviolet with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) providing a new, so far unique, means to remotely study the asymmetric Uranian magnetosphere from Earth. We analyze here two new HST Uranus campaigns executed in September 2012 and November 2014 with different temporal coverage and under variable solar wind conditions numerically predicted by three different MHD codes. Overall, the HST images taken with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph reveal auroral emissions in three pairs of successive images (one pair acquired in 2012 and two in 2014), hence 6 additional auroral detections in total, including the most intense Uranian aurorae ever seen with HST. The detected emissions occur close the expected arrival of interplanetary shocks. They appear as extended spots at southern latitudes, rotating with the planet. They radiate 5–24 kR and 1.3-8.8 GW of ultraviolet emission from H2, last for tens of minutes and vary on timescales down to a few seconds. Fitting the 2014 observations with model auroral ovals constrains the longitude of the southern (northern) magnetic pole to 104 ± 26° (284 ± 26°) in the Uranian Longitude System. We suggest that the Uranian near-equinoctial aurorae are pulsed cusp emissions possibly triggered by large-scale magnetospheric compressions.

We have observed 54 nearby spiral galaxies with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain optical long-slit spectra of nuclear gas disks and STIS optical (~R band) images of the central 5'' × 5'' of the galaxies. These spectra are being used to determine the velocity field of nuclear disks and hence to detect the presence of central massive black holes. Here we present the spectra for the successful observations. Dust obscuration can be significant at optical wavelengths, and so we also combine the STIS images with archival Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer H-band images to produce color maps to investigate the morphology of gas and dust in the central regions. We find a great variety in the different morphologies, from smooth distributions to well-defined nuclear spirals and dust lanes.

We present an optical to near-infrared transmission spectrum of the hot JupiterHAT-P-1b, based on Hubble Space Telescope observations, covering the spectral regime from 0.29 to 1.027μm with Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), which is coupled with a recent Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) transit (1.087 to 1.687μm). We derive refined physical parameters of the HAT-P-1 system, including an improved orbital ephemeris. The transmission spectrum shows a strong absorption signature shortward of 0.55μm, with a strong blueward slope into the near-ultraviolet. We detect atmospheric sodium absorption at a 3.3σ significance level, but find no evidence for the potassium feature. The red data imply a marginally flat spectrum with a tentative absorption enhancement at wavelength longer than ~0.85μm. The STIS and WFC3 spectra differ significantly in absolute radius level (4.3 ± 1.6 pressure scaleheights), implying strong optical absorption in the atmosphere of HAT-P-1b. The optical to near-infrared difference cannot be explained by stellar activity, as simultaneous stellar activity monitoring of the G0V HAT-P-1b host star and its identical companion show no significant activity that could explain the result. We compare the complete STIS and WFC3 transmission spectrum with theoretical atmospheric models which include haze, sodium and an extra optical absorber. We find that both an optical absorber and a supersolar sodium to water abundance ratio might be a scenario explaining the HAT-P-1b observations. Our results suggest that strong optical absorbers may be a dominant atmospheric feature in some hot Jupiter exoplanets. © 2013 The Authors Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Our understanding of the important physical processes operating in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) has advanced in recent years from the analysis of high-resolution ultraviolet (UV) spectra obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Far-Ultraviolet Spectrograph Explorer (FUSE) and from high-fidelity simulations of the kinematics and energetics of the ISM. Nevertheless, much remains to be learned from observations with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) instrument on HST and spectrographs on the World Space Observatory (WSO). I will describe several major unanswered questions and suggest how future UV observations can answer these questions. I will also summarize the instrument requirements needed for a future UV spectroscopic mission and recommend how to achieve a successful mission.

We present ultraviolet spectra of 62 cataclysmic variables observed with Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph & Faint Object Spectrograph (HST STIS FOS) to diagnose cataclysmic variables with enhanced NV/C IV line flux ratios. We concentrated on calculating the line flux ratios of the above mentioned sample. We found that a number of cataclysmic variables reveal enhanced NV/C IV line flux ratios in agreement with the previous studies ( de Martino and Gansicke, 2009 , Gansicke et al., 2003 ). Also we found that two new systems (U SCO, V1974 CYG) reveal enhanced NV/C IV line flux ratios. Such anomalous line flux ratios confirmed that these CVs went through a phase of thermal timescale mass transfer (TTSMT) and now accrete CNO processed material from a companion stripped of its external layers ( Gansicke et al., 2003 , Gansicke, 2004 , de Martino and Gansicke, 2009 ).

High- and medium-resolution ultraviolet spectra from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph were used to search for the weak electric quadrupole transitions of [Mg II] near 1398.8 A. This forbidden doublet was detected in eight sight lines. We calculate an empirical f-value of (1.29 ± 0.13) × 10–5 from all detections and discuss prospects of using this weak line in future studies of translucent interstellar clouds and in damped Lyα systems.

StarCAT is a catalog of high resolution ultraviolet spectra of objects classified as stars, recorded by Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) during its initial seven years of operations (1997-2004). StarCAT is based on 3184 echelle observations of 545 distinct targets, with a total exposure duration of 5.2 Ms. For many of the objects, broad ultraviolet coverage has been achieved by splicing echellegrams taken in two or more FUV (1150-1700 A) and/or NUV (1600-3100 A) settings. In cases of multiple pointings on conspicuously variable sources, spectra were separated into independent epochs. Otherwise, different epochs were combined to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). A post-facto correction to the pipeline data sets compensated for subtle wavelength distortions identified in a previous study of the STIS calibration lamps. An internal fluxing procedure yielded coherent spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for objects with broadly overlapping wavelength coverage. The best StarCAT material achieves 300 m s–1 internal velocity precision; absolute accuracy at the 1 km s–1 level; photometric accuracy of order 4%; and relative flux precision several times better (limited mainly by knowledge of SEDs of UV standard stars). While StarCAT represents a milestone in the large-scale post-processing of STIS echellegrams, a number of potential improvements in the underlying final pipeline are identified.

The highly eccentric binary system, η Car, provides clues to the transition of massive stars from hydrogen-burning via the CNO cycle to a helium-burning evolutionary state. The fastmoving wind of η Car B creates a cavity in η Car A’s slower, but more massive, stellar wind, providing an in situ probe. The Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS), with its high spatial and spectral resolutions, is well matched to follow temporal spatial and velocity variations of multiple wind features. We use observations obtained across 1998–2004 to produce a rudimentary three-dimensional model of the wind interaction in the η Car system. Broad (±500 km s −1 )[ FeII] emission line structures extend 0.7 arcsec (∼1600 au) from the stellar core. In contrast, [Fe III], [Ar III], [Ne III] and [S III] lines extend only 0.3 arcsec (700 au) from NE to SW and are blue shifted from −500 to +200 km s −1 . All observed spectral features vary with the 5.54-year orbital period. The highly ionized, forbidden emission disappears during the low state, associated with periastron passage. The high-ionization emission originates in the outer wind interaction region that is directly excited by the far-ultraviolet radiation from η Car B. The HST/STIS spectra reveal a time-varying, distorted paraboloidal structure, caused by the interaction of the massive stellar winds. The model and observations are consistent with the orbital plane aligned with the skirt of the Homunculus. However, the axis of the distorted paraboloid, relative to the major axis of the binary orbit, is shifted in a prograde rotation along the plane, which projected on the sky is from NE to NW.

An extensive set of HI Lyman-α images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) from 1997–2001 has been analyzed to provide information about the spatial and temporal character of Io's SO2 atmosphere. An atmospheric distribution map derived from the observations reveals that the sunlit SO2 atmosphere is temporally stable on a global scale, with only small local changes. An anti-/sub-jovian asymmetry in the SO2 distribution is present in all 5 years of the observations. The average daytime atmosphere is densest on the anti-jovian hemisphere in the equatorial regions, with a maximum equatorial column density of 5.0 × 10 16 cm − 2 at 140° longitude. The SO2 atmosphere also has greater latitudinal extent on the anti-jovian hemisphere as compared to the sub-jovian. The atmospheric distribution appears to be best correlated with the location of hot spots and known volcanic plumes, although small number statistics for the plumes limits the correlation.

Two-dimensional processing of Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) echelle spectra of the eclipsing M2 Iab + B binary system, VV Cep, has revealed extended emission in all 21 epochs observed, ranging from midtotality through the first quadrature. In the ultraviolet accessible to STIS (1150- 3150 ?), essentially all observed photons originate from the hot component. In total eclipse, a pure emission spectrum is seen, with strong lines from lower levels up to ~2 eV cut by blue-shifted absorption in the M supergiant wind. Out of eclipse, a continuum is observed upon which a rich absorption spectrum of mostly neutral and singly-ionized iron group elements is superimposed. Out of eclipse, the strongest absorption features sit atop the emission profiles seen during eclipse. Far from eclipse, the neutral lines disappear, and the strongest of the remaining absorption lines develop complex inverse P-Cygni profiles. The continuum and spectrally extended blue wings of the inverse P-Cygni spectral lines show a spatial extension characteristic of the HST/STIS response to an unresolved source. However, the emission components of spectral lines lying longward of the blue-shifted wind absorption typically show flux extending beyond the unresolved hot component, implying formation over an extended region much larger than the size of the binary orbit. This extended line emission is believed to be formed by scattering of photons from the hot component's continuum by ions in ground and low-lying metastable levels in the extended wind of the M supergiant. Extension is observed out of eclipse for lines with lower levels up to approximately 4 eV, but the greatest degree of extension is observed for lines with lower levels less than 2 eV. Radial velocity differences across the spatially extended emission correlate with the aperture position angle, consistent with model predictions for wind flow in a binary system in which the wind outflow is comparable to the orbital velocity, and indicate an orbital plane oriented from +11? E of N (receding) through ?169? (approaching).

We introduce a HST/STIS stellar census of R136a, the central ionizing star cluster of 30 Doradus. We present low resolution far-ultraviolet STIS/MAMA spectroscopy of R136 using 17 contiguous 52x0.2 arcsec slits which together provide complete coverage of the central 0.85 parsec (3.4 arcsec). We provide spectral types of 90% of the 57 sources brighter than m_F555W = 16.0 mag within a radius of 0.5 parsec of R136a1, plus 8 additional nearby sources including R136b (O4\,If/WN8). We measure wind velocities for 52 early-type stars from CIV 1548-51, including 16 O2-3 stars. For the first time we spectroscopically classify all Weigelt & Baier members of R136a, which comprise three WN5 stars (a1-a3), two O supergiants (a5-a6) and three early O dwarfs (a4, a7, a8). A complete Hertzsprung-Russell diagram for the most massive O stars in R136 is provided, from which we obtain a cluster age of 1.5+0.3_-0.7 Myr. In addition, we discuss the integrated ultraviolet spectrum of R136, and highlight the central role played by the most luminous stars in producing the prominent HeII 1640 emission line. This emission is totally dominated by very massive stars with initial masses above ~100 Msun. The presence of strong HeII 1640 emission in the integrated light of very young star clusters (e.g A1 in NGC 3125) favours an initial mass function extending well beyond a conventional upper limit of 100 Msun. We include montages of ultraviolet spectroscopy for LMC O stars in the Appendix. The atmosphere of the exoplanet HD 209458b is undergoing sustained mass loss, believed to be caused by X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) irradiation from its star. The majority of this flux is not directly observable due to interstellar absorption, but is required in order to correctly model the photo-evaporation of the planet and photo-ionisation of the outflow. We present a recovered high energy spectrum for HD\,209458 using a Differential Emission Measure (DEM) retrieval technique. We construct a model of the stellar corona and transition region for temperatures between 10$^{4.1}$ and 10$^{8}$ K which is constrained jointly by ultraviolet line strengths measured with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and X-ray flux measurements from XMM-Newton. The total hydrogen ionising luminosity ($\lambda < 912$ \AA) is found to be 10$^{28.26}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is similar to the value for the mean activity level of the Sun. This luminosity is incompatible with energy limited mass loss rates estimated from the same COS dataset, even the lower bound requires an uncomfortably high energetic efficiency of >40%. However, our luminosity is compatible with early estimates of the mass loss rate of HD 209458b based on results from the HST Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). We analyze a large set of far ultraviolet oxygen aurora images of Europa's atmosphere taken by Hubble's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) in 1999 and on 19 occasions between 2012 and 2015. We find that both brightness and aurora morphology undergo systematic variations correlated to the periodically changing plasma environment. The time variable morphology seems to be strongly affected by Europa's interaction with the magnetospheric plasma. The brightest emissions are often found in the polar region where the ambient Jovian magnetic field line is normal to Europa's disk. Near the equator, where bright spots are found at Io, Europa's aurora is faint suggesting a general difference in how the plasma interaction shapes the aurora at Io and Europa. The dusk side is consistently brighter than the dawnside with only few exceptions, which cannot be readily explained by obvious plasma physical or known atmospheric effects. Brightness ratios of the near-surface OI] 1356 Å to OI 1304 Å emissions between 1.5 and 2.8 with a mean ratio of 2.0 are measured, confirming that Europa's bound atmosphere is dominated by O2. The 1356/1304 ratio decreases with increasing altitude in agreement with a more extended atomic O corona, but O2 prevails at least up to altitudes of ∼900 km. Differing 1356/1304 line ratios on the plasma upstream and downstream hemispheres are explained by a differing O mixing ratio in the near-surface O2 atmosphere of ∼5% (upstream) and ≲1% (downstream), respectively. During several eclipse observations, the aurora does not reveal any signs of systematic changes compared to the sunlit images suggesting no or only weak influence of sunlight on the aurora and an optically thin atmosphere. We describe our characterization of the kinematics of the emission-line gas in the nuclear regions of a complete sample of 21 nearby radio galaxies. We obtained data using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope. We show that the point-to-point variations are largest perpendicular to the disks and in nuclei where the organized motion is less pronounced, suggesting that motions are present from gas that has not settled into smooth rotation. We show that the velocity dispersion is not distributed as a function of inclination, and so likely arises from isotropic random motions in the gas. We find that the difference in mean velocities on either side of the nucleus does not vanish as the disks become face-on, suggesting there may be bulk motions of the gas disks. We show that the gas velocity dispersions are closely related to the stellar velocity dispersions, which has implications for black hole fueling and growth mechanisms. We show that significant motions digressing from a smooth thin disk configuration are ubiquitous, and even in those cases where the velocity profile of the emission-line gas appears smooth and uncomplicated there may be dynamical components of the system that are not explained by a thin Keplerian disk model, suggesting caution in the use of gas disk kinematics for the determination of black hole masses.

Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST STIS) near-ultraviolet (NUV) echelle spectra reveal complex structure in the sight line toward the Weigelt D condensation located 0.25'' north-northwest of ? Car. In previous studies, the Weigelt condensations have been described to exhibit pure emission line spectra dominated by transitions in mainly singly and doubly ionized iron-group elements. The aurorae at Jupiter are made up of many different features associated with a variety of generation mechanisms. The main auroral emission, also known as the main oval, is the most prominent of them as it accounts for approximately half of the total power emitted by the aurorae in the ultraviolet range. The energy of the precipitating electrons is a crucial parameter to characterize the processes at play which give rise to these auroral emissions, and the altitude of the emissions directly depends on this energy. Here we make use of far-UV (FUV) images acquired with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope and spectra acquired with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph to measure the vertical profile of the main emissions. The altitude of the brightness peak as seen above the limb is ~ 400 km, which is significantly higher than the 250 km measured in the post-dusk sector by Galileo in the visible domain. However, a detailed analysis of the effect of hydrocarbon absorption, including both simulations and FUV spectral observations, indicates that FUV apparent vertical profiles should be considered with caution, as these observations are not incompatible with an emission peak located at 250 km. The analysis also calls for spectral observations to be carried out with an optimized geometry in order to remove observational ambiguities.

We present a spectral analysis of the UV-bright star vZ 1128 in M3 based on observations with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), and the Keck HIRES echelle spectrograph. By fitting the H I, He I, and He II lines in the Keck spectrum with non-LTE H-He models, we obtain Teff = 36,600 K, log g = 3.95, and log N(He)/N(H) = -0.84. The star's FUSE and STIS spectra show photospheric absorption from C, N, O, Al, Si, P, S, Fe, and Ni. No stellar features from elements beyond the iron peak are observed. Both components of the N V 1240 doublet exhibit P~Cygni profiles, indicating a weak stellar wind, but no other wind features are seen. The star's photospheric abundances appear to have changed little since it left the red giant branch (RGB). Its C, N, O, Al, Si, Fe, and Ni abundances are consistent with published values for the red-giant stars in M3, and the relative abundances of C, N, and O follow the trends seen on the cluster RGB. In particular, its low C abundance suggests that the star left the asymptotic giant branch before the onset of third dredge-up., 15 pages, 10 figures, to be published in MNRAS

We report Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical to near-infrared transmission spectroscopy of the hot Jupiter WASP-6b, measured with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and Spitzer's InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC). The resulting spectrum covers the range $0.29-4.5\,\mu$m. We find evidence for modest stellar activity of WASP-6b and take it into account in the transmission spectrum. The overall main characteristic of the spectrum is an increasing radius as a function of decreasing wavelength corresponding to a change of $\Delta (R_p/R_{\ast})=0.0071$ from 0.33 to $4.5\,\mu$m. The spectrum suggests an effective extinction cross-section with a power law of index consistent with Rayleigh scattering, with temperatures of $973\pm144$ K at the planetary terminator. We compare the transmission spectrum with hot-Jupiter atmospheric models including condensate-free and aerosol-dominated models incorporating Mie theory. While none of the clear-atmosphere models is found to be in good agreement with the data, we find that the complete spectrum can be described by models that include significant opacity from aerosols including Fe-poor Mg$_2$SiO$_4$, MgSiO$_3$, KCl and Na$_2$S dust condensates. WASP-6b is the second planet after HD189733b which has equilibrium temperatures near $\sim1200$ K and shows prominent atmospheric scattering in the optical., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 7 tables

The scientific program is presented as well a the abstracts of the contributions. An extended account is published in “The Ultraviolet Universe: stars from birth to death” (Ed. Gómez de Castro) published by the Editorial Complutense de Madrid (UCM), that can be accessed by electronic format through the website of the Network for UV Astronomy (www.ucm.es/info/nuva).There are five telescopes currently in orbit that have a UV capability of some description. At the moment, only FUSE provides any medium- to high-resolution spectroscopic capability. GALEX, the XMM UV-Optical Telescope (UVOT) and the Swift. UVOT mainly delivers broad-band imaging, but with some low-resolution spectroscopy using grisms. The primary UV spectroscopic capability of HST was lost when the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph failed in 2004, but UV imaging is still available with the HST-WFPC2 and HST-ACS instruments.With the expected limited lifetime of sl FUSE, UV spectroscopy will be effectively unavailable in the short-term future. Even if a servicing mission of HST does go ahead, to install COS and repair STIS, the availability of high-resolution spectroscopy well into the next decade will not have been addressed. Therefore, it is important to develop new missions to complement and follow on from the legacy of FUSE and HST, as well as the smaller imaging/low resolution spectroscopy facilities. This contribution presents an outline of the UV projects, some of which are already approved for flight, while others are still at the proposal/study stage of their development.This contribution outlines the main results from Joint Discussion 04 held during the IAU General Assembly in Prague, August 2006, concerning the rationale behind the needs of the astronomical community, in particular the stellar astrophysics community, for new UV instrumentation. Recent results from UV observations were presented and future science goals were laid out. These goals will lay the framework for future mission planning.

We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) high-resolution near- ultraviolet (NUV) spectra ofCar's central source recorded before, during and after the 2003.5 spectroscopic minimum. Our focus is on the narrow absorption lines formed in multiple circumstellar shells, superimposed on the broad P Cygni stellar wind features, and how they respond to the flux variations ofCar across the minimum. Over 30 separate narrow-line velocity components are identified: three around � 146 km s � 1 , many between � 323 and � 587kms � 1 ,andafewexceeding � 1000kms � 1 .Ingeneral,excitationdecreaseswithincreasingvelocityindicating that the primary excitation is by UV stellar photons and that the slower shells are located closer to the central source. Twowell-isolatedvelocitysystemsat � 146and � 513kms � 1 displayverydifferentspectralcharacteristicsregarding ionization/excitation and respond differently toCar's spectroscopic minimum. The � 146 km s � 1 shell, associated with the (internal) Little Homunculus, is ionized across the broad spectroscopic maximum but relaxes during the few months long minimum. The � 146 km s � 1 component is joined by adjacent velocity components in lines of singly ionized iron-group elements. Ti ii and V ii absorptions appear during the minimum, most likely caused by a decrease in Lyman-ionizing flux. The � 513 km s � 1 component, part of the (outer) Homunculus, does not show significant changes in atomic absorptions, but intermediate-velocity components between � 369 and � 503 km s � 1 vary during the minimum. We present the NUV spectrum and describe its general characteristics, but we focus on identifications of thenebularabsorptionlinesandtheirvariationsacrossthe2003.5minimum.Thecompletespectrumbetween2380 and 3160 8 with line identifications is available in the electronic edition of this paper.

We have obtained Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph long-slit spectra of the central region of the advanced merger NGC 4194. The spectra cover the wavelength ranges 1150–1750 A in the UV and 2900–10270 A in the visible. Results from the study of the properties of 14 star-forming regions (knots) are presented. If the [N II] contribution is 40% of the combined Hα + [N II] flux, then the average E(B - V) = 0.7 mag. The metal abundances are approximately solar, with individual knot abundances ranging from log(O/H) + 12 = 8.1 ± 0.5 to 8.9 ± 0.4. The Hα luminosities of the 14 observed knots yield a total star formation rate (SFR) of ~46 M⊙ yr-1. The sizes of the H II regions associated with the knots were determined from L(Hβ) and range from ~28 to ~119 pc when a filling factor of 0.1 is assumed. The sizes are a factor of ~2.15 smaller for a filling factor of 1. Using Starburst99, the EW(Hα + [N II]), and EW(Hβ), we estimate the ages of the star-forming regions to be 5.5–10.5 Myr. From ground-based spectra the effective temperatures of the H II regions are found to be ~11,000 K, and the electron densities are determined to be ~530 cm-3. We find that eight of the knots probably formed with a Salpeter initial mass function truncated at an upper mass of 30 M⊙, and one of the knots likely formed with a standard Salpeter initial mass function. We suggest that the knots in our sample are the precursors of globular clusters. Two of the knots are in a region of flowing gas and are among the most massive, are the largest in radius, have the highest SFR, and are among the youngest of the knots.

The gallium abundance in HgMn stars has been reported to be different for analyses conducted from spectral lines in the optical versus those from the ultraviolet. We pursue this ultraviolet-optical discrepancy from a line-blending perspective by investigating the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) spectrum of the sharp-lined HgMn binary star chi Lup. Its gallium abundance is derived to be log N-Ga = 4.5 (log N-H = 12) based on nonresonance Ga II lines, and we are able to demonstrate the line-blending problems associated with the abundances determined from the resonance lines of Ga II lambda 1414 and Ga III lambda 1495. The HST STIS spectrum for chi Lup is also compared with a co-added International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectrum to further illustrate the importance of accounting for the line blending in quantitative abundance analyses. We have compared an IUE co-added spectrum of mu Lep with an LTE-based synthetic spectrum and managed to fit both Ga II lambda 1414 and Ga III lambda 1495 with an abundance of log N-Ga = 7.3. However, the fitting of these lines requires a dramatic change in the radiative damping constants, which may indicate a breakdown in our LTE modeling or the need to include other atmospheric effects. The Cassini spacecraft Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) obtained observations of Jupiter's auroral emissions in H-2 band systems and H Lyman-alpha from day 275 of 2000 (October 1), to day 81 of 2001 (March 22). Much of the globally integrated auroral variability measured with UVIS can be explained simply in terms of the rotation of Jupiter's main auroral arcs with the planet. These arcs were also imaged by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on Hubble Space Telescope (HST). However, several brightening events were seen by UVIS in which the global auroral output increased by a factor of 2-4. These events persisted over a number of hours and in one case can clearly be tied to a large solar coronal mass ejection event. The auroral UV emissions from these bursts also correspond to hectometric radio emission (0.5-16 MHz) increases reported by the Galileo Plasma Wave Spectrometer (PWS) and Cassim Radio and Plasma Wave Spectrometer (RPWS) experiments. In general, the hectometric radio data vary differently with longitude than the UV data because of radio wave beaming effects. The 2 largest events in the UVIS data were on 2000 day 280 (October 6) and on 2000 days 325-326 (November 20-21). The global brightening events on November 20-21 are compared with corresponding data on the interplanetary magnetic field, solar wind conditions, and energetic particle environment. ACE (Advanced Composition Explorer) solar wind data was numerically propagated from the Earth to Jupiter with an MHD code and compared to the observed event. A second class of brief auroral brightening events seen in HST (and probably UVIS) data that last for similar to 2 min is associated with aurora] flares inside the main auroral ovals. On January 8, 2001, from 18:45-19:35 UT UVIS H-2 band emissions from the north polar region varied quasiperiodically. The varying emissions, probably due to amoral flares inside the main auroral oval, are correlated with low-frequency quasiperiodic radio bursts in the 0.6-5 kHz Galileo PWS data. We have analyzed the Cassini Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (UVIS) observations of the Jupiter aurora with an auroral atmosphere two-stream electron transport code. The observations of Jupiter by UVIS took place during the Cassini Campaign. The Cassini Campaign included support spectral and imaging observations by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). A major result for the UVIS observations was the identification of a large color variation between the far ultraviolet (FUV: 1100–1700 A) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV: 800–1100 A) spectral regions. This change probably occurs because of a large variation in the ratio of the soft electron flux (10–3000 eV) responsible for the EUV aurora to the hard electron flux (∼15–22 keV) responsible for the FUV aurora. On the basis of this result a new color ratio for integrated intensities for EUV and FUV was defined ( 4 π I 1550 – 1620 A / 4 π I 1030 – 1150 A ) which varied by approximately a factor of 6. The FUV color ratio ( 4 π I 1550 – 1620 A / 4 π I 1230 – 1300 A ) was more stable with a variation of less than 50% for the observations studied. The medium resolution (0.9 A FWHM, G140M grating) FUV observations (1295–1345 A and 1495–1540 A) by STIS on 13 January 2001, on the other hand, were analyzed by a spectral modeling technique using a recently developed high-spectral resolution model for the electron-excited H2 rotational lines. The STIS FUV data were analyzed with a model that considered the Lyman band spectrum (B Σ u + 1 → X Σ g + 1 ) as composed of an allowed direct excitation component (X Σ g + 1 → B Σ u + 1 ) and an optically forbidden component (X Σ g + 1 → EF , GK , H H ¯ , … Σ g + 1 followed by the cascade transition Σ g + 1 → B Σ u + 1 ). The medium-resolution spectral regions for the Jupiter aurora were carefully chosen to emphasize the cascade component. The ratio of the two components is a direct measurement of the mean secondary electron energy of the aurora. The mean secondary electron energy of the aurora varies between 50 and 200 eV for the polar cap, limb and auroral oval observations. We examine a long time base of Galileo Ultraviolet Spectrometer color ratios from the standard mission (1996–1998) and compare them to Cassini UVIS, HST, and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) observations.

STIS white-light coronagraphic imaging has been carried out for 14 nearby, lightly reddened Herbig Ae stars, providingdataontheenvironmentsanddisksassociatedwiththesestars.Nodisksaredetectedinourdatawhenthe Herbig Ae starisaccompaniedbya stellarcompanion atr � 2 00 .Wefindthattheopticalvisibilityofprotoplanetary disks associated with Herbig Ae stars at r � 50 70 AU from the star is correlated with the strength of the mid-IR PAH features, particularly 6.2 � m. These features, like the FUV fluorescent H2 emission, trace the presence of material sufficiently far above the disk midplane that it is directly illuminated by the star’s FUV radiation. In contrast, measures of the bulk properties of the disk, including ongoing accretion activity, mass, and the submillimeter slope of the SED, do not correlate with the surface brightness of the optical nebulosity. Modelers have interpreted the appearance of the IR SED and the presence of emission from warm silicate grains at 10 � ma s a measure of geometrical shadowing by material in the disk near the dust sublimation radius of 0.5 AU. Geometrical shadowing sufficient to render a disk dark to distances as large as 500 AU from a star would require that the star be optically visible only if viewed essentially pole-on, in disagreement with our program star system inclinations. Rather than invoking shadowing to account for the optically dark disks, the correlation of the STIS detections with PAHemissionfeaturessuggestsacorrelationwithdiskflaringandananticorrelationwiththedegreeofdustsettling toward the midplane. If this correlation continues to lower levels, the STIS data suggest that improvements in coronagraph performance that suppress the residual scattered and diffracted stellar light by an additional factor of � 10 should render the majority of disks associated with nearby Herbig Ae stars detectable. We have continued our detailed analysis of the high-resolution (R = 4000) spectroscopic observation of the DA white dwarf G191-B2B, obtained by the Joint Astrophysical Plasma-dynamic Experiment (J-PEX) normal incidence sounding rocket-borne telescope, comparing the observed data with theoretical predictions for both homogeneous and stratified atmosphere structures. We find that the former models give the best agreement over the narrow waveband covered by J-PEX, in conflict with what is expected from previous studies of the lower resolution but broader wavelength coverage Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer spectra. We discuss the possible limitations of the atomic data and our understanding of the stellar atmospheres that might give rise to this inconsistency. In our earlier study, we obtained an unusually high ionization fraction for the ionized He II present along the line of sight to the star. In the present paper, we obtain a better fit when we assume, as suggested by Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph results, that this He II resides in two separate components. When one of these is assigned to the local interstellar cloud, the implied He ionization fraction is consistent with measurements along other lines of sight. However, the resolving power and signal-to-noise available from the instrument configuration used in this first successful J-PEX flight are not sufficient to clearly identity and prove the existence of the two components.

We have investigated the far- through mid-UV (1150-2360 A) spectrum of η Carinae during the late stages of its broad maximum using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) moderate dispersion echelle modes. The η Car spectrum is a mixture of absorption and emission lines from the surrounding nebula superimposed on broad stellar wind features. This paper provides a description of the observed spectrum including the wind features, the interstellar absorption, and the emission spectrum from the surrounding nebula, but with the emphasis on the absorption spectrum formed in the foreground ejecta. The ejecta absorption spectrum has a complicated velocity structure in which two velocity structures, at -146 and -513 km s-1, are easily distinguished. These two velocity components, formed in different regions of the η Car nebula, have in an earlier analysis been identified and demonstrated to have very different spectral characteristics. The slower velocity component is time variable over the spectroscopic period and is characterized by spectral lines from mainly singly ionized iron-peak elements, while the faster one shows transitions from neutral and singly ionized elements in addition to molecular lines from the hydrogen Lyman bands. The high-velocity H2 lines dominate great parts of the spectrum with over 800 identified transitions from energy levels up to 30,000 cm-1. The STIS MAMA data provide the tool for spatial investigations of the central parts of η Car. H I Lyα pumped and semiforbidden emission lines are observed to be formed east of the central source toward Weigelt blobs B and C, located up to 02 from the central source. The inner 100 AU of HD 100546 is studied via far-ultraviolet long-slit spectroscopy with the Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). The star is surrounded by reflection nebulosity, which can be traced 100 AU in the continuum, and by emission from H I Lyα, N I, Si II, and fluorescent H2 transitions. The Lyα emission can be traced up to 200 AU along the system semimajor axis and 300 AU along the semiminor axis. The radial surface brightness profile and the presence of both reflection nebulosity and molecular gas suggest that we have detected the flared surface of the disk predicted from analysis of the IR spectral energy distribution. When corrected for the r-2 falloff in illumination from the Herbig Be star, the reflection nebulosity, neutral atomic gas, and H2 emission all reveal the presence of a central cavity extending 013 ± 0025 (13 AU) from the star, more than 20 times larger in radius than would be expected from dust sublimation alone. The reflection nebulosity within the cavity is centered on a location 005 (5 AU) to the southeast of the star along the system semimajor axis. The pericenter asymmetry in the cavity is inconsistent with cavity formation by the combined effects of ice sublimation, radiation pressure blowout on small grains, or other disk chemistry that should produce azimuthally symmetric features. The STIS data are also consistent with a current accretion rate onto the Herbig Be star no higher than a few times 10-9 M☉ yr-1, an order of magnitude lower than seen in 5-8 Myr old Herbig Ae stars. The low accretion rate, large cavity, pericenter asymmetry, and deficit of warm dust grain emission observed over 2-8 μm are all consistent with dynamical sculpting of the disk by one or more bodies within the disk. An upper limit to the flux from any chromospherically active, low-mass companion is a factor of 5-10 fainter than AU Mic (M1 Ve; t = 12 Myr) at the distance of HD 100546. This upper limit firmly excludes a low-mass stellar companion within the cavity but does not exclude a less active and/or luminous brown dwarf. The absence of similar central clearing in younger Herbig Ae stars suggests that any companion must become externally detectable late in the evolution of the disk, favoring a giant planet as the source of the structure in the HD 100546 disk.

We obtained ultraviolet and optical images of star-forming regions in the interacting galaxy system NGC 3994/3995 using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. We describe the characteristics of 56 detected knots, a majority of which are younger than 20 Myr old. There is no discernible pattern of knot age with respect to position within the galaxies. The knots have masses and radii ranging from 7.2 × 103 to 4.4 × 106 M⊙ and from 4 to 23 pc, respectively. Using a conservative criterion, we find that ~15% of these knots may be proto-globular clusters; the percentage of proto-globular clusters may be as high as ~70%. The UV flux distribution of the knots in NGC 3995 can be fitted with a power law with α = -0.72 ± 0.11, with no turnover detected brightward of the completeness limit.
