1. XMM-Newton Observations of NGC 253: Resolving the Emission Components in the Disk and Nuclear Area

Abstract

We describe the first XMM-Newton observations of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. As known from previous X-ray observations, NGC 253 shows a mixture of extended (disk and halo) and point-source emission. The high XMM-Newton throughput allows for the first time a detailed investigation of the spatial, spectral and variability properties of these components simultaneously. We detect a bright X-ray transient approx. 70 sec SSW of the nucleus and show the spectrum and light curve of the brightest point source (approx. 30 sec S of the nucleus, most likely a black-hole X-ray binary, BHXRB). The unprecedented combination of RGS and EPIC also sheds new light on the emission of the complex nuclear region, the X-ray plume and the disk diffuse emission. In particular, EPIC images reveal that the limb-brightening of the plume is mostly seen in higher ionization emission lines, while in the lower ionization lines, and below 0.5 keV, the plume is more homo- geneously structured, pointing to new interpretations as to the make up of the starburst-driven outflow. Assuming that type IIa supernova remnants (SNRs) are mostly responsible for the E greater than 4 keV emission, the detection with EPIC of the 6.7 keV line allows us to estimate a supernova rate within the nuclear starburst of 0.2 /yr.

Abstract

Herder, Jan-Willem den et al., ORIGIN is a proposal for the M3 mission call of ESA aimed at the study of metal creation from the epoch of cosmic dawn. Using high-spectral resolution in the soft X-ray band, ORIGIN will be able to identify the physical conditions of all abundant elements between C and Ni to red-shifts of z = 10, and beyond. The mission will answer questions such as: When were the first metals created? How does the cosmic metal content evolve? Where do most of the metals reside in the Universe? What is the role of metals in structure formation and evolution? To reach out to the early Universe ORIGIN will use Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) to study their local environments in their host galaxies. This requires the capability to slew the satellite in less than a minute to the GRB location. By studying the chemical composition and properties of clusters of galaxies we can extend the range of exploration to lower redshifts (z-0.2). For this task we need a high-resolution spectral imaging instrument with a large field of view. Using the same instrument, we can also study the so far only partially detected baryons in the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). The less dense part of the WHIM will be studied using absorption lines at low redshift in the spectra for GRBs. The ORIGIN mission includes a Transient Event Detector (coded mask with a sensitivity of 0.4 photon/cm2/s in 10 s in the 5–150 keV band) to identify and localize 2000 GRBs over a five year mission, of which -65 GRBs have a redshift > 7. The Cryogenic Imaging Spectrometer, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV, a field of view of 30 arcmin and large effective area below 1 keV has the sensitivity to study clusters up to a significant fraction of the virial radius and to map the denser parts of the WHIM (factor 30 higher than achievable with current instruments). The payload is complemented by a Burst InfraRed Telescope to enable onboard red-shift determination of GRBs (hence securing proper follow up of high-z bursts) and also probes the mildly ionized state of the gas. Fast repointing is achieved by a dedicated ControlledMomentum Gyro and a low background is achieved by the selected low Earth orbit., The team likes to express its appreciation for the support of Astrium UK for the present study.

Abstract

Several techniques useful in the analysis of data from coded-mask telescopes are presented. Methods of handling changes in the instrument pointing direction are reviewed and ways of using FFT techniques to do the deconvolution considered. Emphasis is on techniques for optimally-coded systems, but it is shown that the range of systems included in this class can be extended through the new concept of 'partial cycle averaging'.

Abstract

We demonstrate how X-ray measurements of the amount and distribution of gas and metals in the intracluster medium (ICM) of galaxy groups and clusters can probe the impact and feedback history of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the cluster members. Comparing such measurements for a sample of groups to existing results for more massive clusters and to the optical and radio properties of the group members, we explore the role and efficiency of AGN in central group galaxies in (pre)-heating, mixing, and ejecting material from group-sized halos. AGN feedback appears to be important for mixing ICM metals in the cores of groups and low-mass clusters at the present day. At higher redshift, AGN outflows have plausibly also played a vital role in establishing the observed shortfall of gas and metals in groups compared to massive clusters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We study the luminosity gap, , between the first- and second-ranked galaxies in a sample of 59 massive () galaxy clusters, using data from the Hale Telescope, the Hubble Space Telescope, Chandra and Spitzer. We find that the distribution, ), is a declining function of to which we fitted a straight line: . The fraction of clusters with 'large' luminosity gaps is , which represents a excess over that obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of a Schechter function that matches the mean cluster galaxy luminosity function. We also identify four clusters with 'extreme' luminosity gaps, , giving a fraction of . More generally, large luminosity gap clusters are relatively homogeneous, with elliptical/discy brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), cuspy gas density profiles (i.e. strong cool cores), high concentrations and low substructure fractions. In contrast, small luminosity gap clusters are heterogeneous, spanning the full range of boxy/elliptical/discy BCG morphologies, the full range of cool core strengths and dark matter concentrations, and have large substructure fractions. Taken together, these results imply that the amplitude of the luminosity gap is a function of both the formation epoch and the recent infall history of the cluster. 'BCG dominance' is therefore a phase that a cluster may evolve through and is not an evolutionary 'cul-de-sac'. We also compare our results with semi-analytic model predictions based on the Millennium Simulation. None of the models is able to reproduce all of the observational results on , underlining the inability of the current generation of models to match the empirical properties of BCGs. We identify the strength of active galactic nucleus feedback and the efficiency with which cluster galaxies are replenished after they merge with the BCG in each model as possible causes of these discrepancies. Abstract

We present an analysis of deep XMM–Newton and Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster XLSSJ022403.9−041328 (hereafter XLSSC 029), detected in the XMM–Newton Large Scale Structure survey. Density and temperature profiles of the X-ray emitting gas were used to perform a hydrostatic mass analysis of the system. This allowed us to measure the total mass and gas fraction in the cluster and define overdensity radii R500 and R2500. The global properties of XLSSC 029 were measured within these radii and compared with those of the local population. The gas mass fraction was found to be consistent with local clusters. The mean metal abundance was , with the cluster core regions excluded, consistent with the predicted and observed evolution. The properties of XLSSC 029 were then used to investigate the position of the cluster on the and scaling relations. In all cases the observed properties of XLSSC 029 agreed well with the simple self-similar evolution of the scaling relations. This is the first test of the evolution of these relations at and supports the use of the scaling relations in cosmological studies with distant galaxy clusters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Following the presentation of the XMM-Large Scale Structure ( XMM-LSS) survey X-ray source detection package by Pacaud et al., we provide the source lists for the first surveyed 5.5 deg2. The catalogues pertain to the [0.5–2] and [2–10] keV bands and contain in total 3385 point-like or extended sources above a detection likelihood of 15 in either band. The agreement with deep log N– log S is excellent. The main parameters considered are position, count rate, source extent with associated likelihood values. A set of additional quantities such as astrometric corrections and fluxes are further calculated while errors on the position and count rate are deduced from simulations. We describe the construction of the band-merged catalogue allowing rapid subsample selection and easy cross-correlation with external multiwavelength catalogues. A small optical Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey multiband subset of objects are associated with each source along with an X-ray/optical overlay. We make the full X-ray images available in FITS format. The data are available at the Centre de Données de Strasbourg and, in a more extended form, at the Milan XMM-LSS survey data base. Abstract

We present X-ray and optical spectroscopic observations of 12 galaxy groups and clusters identified within the X-ray Multi-Mirror ( XMM) Large-Scale Structure (LSS) survey. Groups and clusters are selected as extended X-ray sources from a 3.5 deg2 XMM image mosaic above a flux limit in the [0.5–2] keV energy band. Deep BVRI images and multi-object spectroscopy confirm each source as a galaxy concentration located within the redshift interval . We combine line-of-sight velocity dispersions with the X-ray properties of each structure computed from a two-dimensional surface brightness model and a single temperature fit to the XMM spectral data. The resulting distribution of X-ray luminosity, temperature and velocity dispersion indicate that the XMM–LSS survey is detecting low-mass clusters and galaxy groups to redshifts . Confirmed systems display little or no evidence for X-ray luminosity evolution at a given X-ray temperature compared to lower-redshift X-ray group and cluster samples. A more complete understanding of these trends will be possible with the compilation of a statistically complete sample of galaxy groups and clusters anticipated within the continuing XMM–LSS survey. 9. Entropy amplification from energy feedback in simulated galaxy groups and clusters.

Abstract

We use hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters and groups to study the effect of pre-heating on the entropy structure of the intracluster medium. Our simulations account for non-gravitational heating of the gas either by imposing a minimum entropy floor at redshift in adiabatic simulations, or by considering feedback by galactic winds powered by supernova (SN) energy in runs that include radiative cooling and star formation. In the adiabatic simulations we find that the entropy is increased out to the external regions of the simulated haloes as a consequence of the transition from clumpy to smooth accretion induced by extra heating. This result is in line with the predictions of the semi-analytical model by Voit et al. However, the introduction of radiative cooling substantially reduces this entropy amplification effect. While we find that galactic winds of increasing strength are effective in regulating star formation, they have a negligible effect on the entropy profile of cluster-sized haloes. Only in models where the action of the winds is complemented with diffuse heating corresponding to a pre-collapse entropy do we find a sizeable entropy amplification out to the virial radius of the groups. Observational evidence for entropy amplification in the outskirts of galaxy clusters and groups therefore favours a scenario for feedback that distributes heating energy in a more diffuse way than predicted by the model for galactic winds from SN explosions explored here. Abstract

We present XMM–Newton observations of the wake–radio galaxy system 4C 34.16, which shows a cool and dense wake trailing behind the host galaxy of 4C 34.16. A comparison with numerical simulations is enlightening, as they demonstrate that the wake is produced mainly by ram pressure stripping during the galactic motion through the surrounding cluster. The mass of the wake is a substantial fraction of the mass of the X-ray halo of an elliptical galaxy. This observational fact supports a wake formation scenario similar to that recently demonstrated numerically by Acreman et al.: the host galaxy of 4C 34.16 has fallen into its cluster, and is currently crossing its central regions. A substantial fraction of its X-ray halo has been stripped by ram pressure, and remains behind to form the galaxy wake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The superb spatial resolution ofChandrais utilized to study the X-ray morphology of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1800 embedded in a small group of galaxies. Diffuse galactic emission is detected, extending several kiloparsec above the galactic plane, with an overall morphology similar to the galactic winds seen in nearby X-ray-bright starburst galaxies. This makes NGC 1800 the most distant dwarf starburst with a clear detection of diffuse X-ray emission. The diffuse X-ray luminosity ofaccounts for at least 60 per cent of the total soft X-ray output of the galaxy. A hot gas temperature ofkeV and metallicityare derived, the latter being consistent with results from optical spectroscopy of the interstellar medium. Our failure to detect any hot gas associated with the embedding galaxy group translates into an upper limit to the group X-ray luminosity of. There is no convincing evidence that the outflowing wind of NGC 1800 is currently interacting with any intragroup gas, and mechanical considerations indicate that the wind can escape the galaxy and its surrounding H ihalo, eventually delivering energy and metals to the intragroup gas. Properties of NGC 1800 are compared to those of other dwarf starburst galaxies, and a first detailed discussion of the X-ray scaling properties of this population of objects is given, set against the equivalent results obtained for normal starburst galaxies. Results indicate that dwarf starbursts to a large degree behave as down-scaled versions of normal starburst galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Using the high sensitivity of XMM–Newton, we have studied the X-ray emission of the two prototypical late-stage merger remnants, NGC 3921 and 7252. In the case of NGC 7252, this is complemented by archival Chandra data. We investigate the nature of the discrete X-ray point source populations and the hot diffuse gas components in these two galaxies, and compare them in the light of their different merger ages and histories. We detect three candidate ultraluminous X-ray point sources (ULXs) in NGC 3921 and at least six in NGC 7252, for which we have high spatial resolution Chandra data. These have luminosities ranging from (for ). We expect these ULXs to be high-mass X-ray binaries, associated with the recent star formation in these two galaxies. Extended hot gas is observed in both galaxies. We have sufficient counts in the XMM–Newton data to fit two-component hot plasma models to their X-ray spectra, and estimate the X-ray luminosities of the hot diffuse gas components to be and in NGC 3921 and 7252, respectively. These luminosities are low compared with the luminosities observed in typical mature elliptical galaxies ), into which these merger remnants are expected to evolve. We do not see evidence that the X-ray haloes of these galaxies are currently being regenerated to the masses and luminosities seen in typical elliptical galaxies. The mass of atomic gas available to fall back into the main bodies of these galaxies and shock-heat to X-ray temperatures is insufficient for this to be the sole halo regeneration mechanism. We conclude that halo regeneration is most likely a long-term (>10 Gyr) process, occurring predominantly via mass loss from evolving stars, in a subsonic outflow stage commencing ∼2 Gyr after the merging event. Abstract

How structures on various scales formed and evolved from the early Universe up to present time is a fundamental question of astrophysical cosmology. EDGE will trace the cosmic history of the baryons from the early generations of massive star by Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) explosions, through the period of cluster formation, down to very low redshifts, when between a third and one half of the baryons are expected to reside in cosmic filaments undergoing gravitational collapse by dark matter (Warm Hot Intragalactic Medium: WHIM). In addition EDGE, with its unprecedented observational capabilities, will provide key results on several other topics. The science is feasible with a medium class mission using existing technology combined with innovative instrumental and observational capabilities on a single satellite by: a) observing with fast reaction Gamma-Ray Bursts with a high spectral resolution (R ~ 500). This enables the study of their (star-forming) environment from the Dark to the local Universe and the use of GRB as back light of large scale cosmological structures b) Observing and surveying extended sources (clusters, WHIM) with high sensitivity using two wide field of view X-ray telescopes (one with a high angular resolution and the other with a high spectral resolution)., This is a low resolution version of the proposal submitted to ESA in response to the Cosmic Vision Call. Abstract

This article is the second in a series in which we perform an extensive comparison of various galaxy-based cluster mass estimation techniques that utilise the positions, velocities and colours of galaxies. Our aim is to quantify the scatter, systematic bias and completeness of cluster masses derived from a diverse set of 25 galaxy-based methods using two contrasting mock galaxy catalogues based on a sophisticated halo occupation model and a semi-analytic model. Analysing 968 clusters, we find a wide range in the RMS errors in log M200c delivered by the different methods (0.18 to 1.08 dex, i.e., a factor of ~1.5 to 12), with abundance matching and richness methods providing the best results, irrespective of the input model assumptions. In addition, certain methods produce a significant number of catastrophic cases where the mass is under- or over-estimated by a factor greater than 10. Given the steeply falling high-mass end of the cluster mass function, we recommend that richness or abundance matching-based methods are used in conjunction with these methods as a sanity check for studies selecting high mass clusters. We see a stronger correlation of the recovered to input number of galaxies for both catalogues in comparison with the group/cluster mass, however, this does not guarantee that the correct member galaxies are being selected. We do not observe significantly higher scatter for either mock galaxy catalogues. Our results have implications for cosmological analyses that utilise the masses, richnesses, or abundances of clusters, which have different uncertainties when different methods are used., 25 pages, 19 figures, 7 tables.
