Search

The astrophysical complex TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic-ray physics and Gamma-ray Astronomy), whose first phase is being completed in the Tunka valley 50 km from Lake Baikal, is described. Its research program, first results, and development prospects are discussed.

The importance and advantages of the hybrid approach developed within the TAIGA project for studying the high-energy section of the spectrum of gamma radiation in the Universe are discussed. The pilot complex of the TAIGA gamma observatory with an area of 1 km $${}^{2}$$ is briefly described along with the lines of its development, and the first results obtained on this basis are given.

The physical motivations and performance of the TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) project are presented. The TAIGA observatory addresses ground-based gamma-ray astronomy at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV and astroparticle physics. The pilot TAIGA complex locates in the Tunka valley, ~50 km West from the southern tip of the lake Baikal. It includes integrating air Cherenkov TAIGA-HiSCORE array with 120 wide-angle optical stations distributed over on area 1 square kilometer about and three the 4-m class Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes of the TAIGA-IACT array. The latter array has a shape of triangle with side lengths of about 300m, 400m and 500m. The expected integral sensitivity of the 1 km2 TAIGA detector will be about 2,5 × 10-13 TeV cm-2 sec-1 for detection of E ≥ 100 TeV gamma-rays in 300 hours of source observations. The combination of the wide angle Cherenkov array and IACTs could offer a cost effective-way to build a really large (up to 10 km2) array for very high energy gamma-ray astronomy. The reconstruction of a given EAS energy, incoming direction and the core position, based on the TAIGA-HiSCORE data, allows one to increase the distance between the relatively expensive IACTs up to 600-800 m. These, together with the surface and underground electron/Muon detectors will be used for selection of gamma-ray induced EAS. Present status of the project, together with the current array description and the first experimental results and plans for the future will be reported.

Work is currently under way in the Tunka Valley, 50 km from Lake Baikal, to create the TAIGA gamma observatory for studying gamma radiation and cosmic ray fluxes in the 1013–1018 eV range of energies. To detect gamma rays with energies above tens of TeV, a hybrid method of detecting showers is implemented. It is based on data obtained by the TAIGA Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) and the wide-angle TAIGA-HiSCORE array. The preliminary results from processing the telescope’s data for the low-energy region (>2–3 TeV) are presented. Joint events with energy more than 50 TeV are analyzed and compared to Monte Carlo calculations.

The relevance and benefits of the new TAIGA gamma observatory complex in the Tunka Valley (50 km from Lake Baikal) are discussed. The main aim of the TAIGA installation is to study high-energy gamma radiation and search for cosmic pevatrons. The first series of gamma stations was commissioned in 2019 and covers an area of 1 km2. Its expected integral gamma radiation sensitivity at an energy of 100 TeV over 300 h of source monitoring is (2–5) × 10−13 TeV cm−2 s−1. It is planned to expand the effective area of TAIGA gamma observation to 10 km2 in the future.

2070 unique, homogeneous photometric and polarization observations of the microquasar in a binary system with a black hole V404 Cyg/GS2023+338 obtained in 2015 with the MASTER global network of robotic telescopes (16 robotic telescopes located at eight points on the Earth in Russia, Spain, South Africa, and Argentina) are presented. MASTER was the first telescope network to obtain optical observations of the microquasar after its gamma-ray outburst in 2015. Observations were carried out from 18:34:09 UT on June 15, 2015 until December 2015 in four polarizations and in the four standard BV RI filters. The paper presents the results of these observations and a comparative analysis of optical and X-ray data. The observations confirm the previously discovered super-long delays of the optical radiation relative to the X-ray outbursts. Possible mechanisms causing the delay in the optical variations relative to the X-ray variations are discussed. Variability of the optical polarization discovered earlier is confirmed another similar episode reported.

The concept of a multi-functional astronomical complex as applied to robotic astronomy networks and systems is formulated. The practical realization of this concept in the MASTER global network of robotic telescopes of Moscow State University is described. The dynamically integrated MASTER database, which transforms a network of robotic telescopes into a robotic network, is described. Real, multi-channel astronomical observations obtained on the MASTER global network are used to show the effective application of this concept. The MASTER global network is continuously participating in multi-wavelength and multi-channel observations aimed at studying astrophysical sources located in extreme conditions, including the sources of gravitational waves registered by the LIGO/VIRGO detectors, of high-energy neutrinos detected by IceCube and ANTARES, and of fast radio bursts (FRBs) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The MASTER network provided the most extensive survey of the first error field for the LIGO gravitational-wave outburst GW 150914 (5000 square degrees) and carried out the first independent localization of the gravitational-wave event GW170817. TheMASTER network has also discovered more than 1600 optical transients with various physical natures. Data obtained with the MASTER network have been used to provide pointing information to major ground-based and space-based telescopes.

One of the most informative methods of cosmic ray studies is the detection of Cherenkov light from extensive air showers (EAS). The primary energy reconstruction is possible by using the Earth’s atmosphere as a huge calorimeter . The EAS Cherenkov light array Tunka-133, with ∼ 3 km 2 geometrical area, is taking data since 2009. Tunka-133 is located in the Tunka Astrophysical Center at ∼ 50 km west of Lake Baikal. This array allows us to perform a detailed study of the energy spectrum and the mass composition in the energy range from 6 ⋅ 1 0 15 eV to 1 0 18 eV . Most of the ongoing efforts are focused on the construction of the first stage of the detector TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy). The latter is designed for the study of gamma rays and charged cosmic rays in the energy range of 1 0 13 eV – 1 0 18 eV . The TAIGA prototype will consist of ∼ 100 wide angle timing Cherenkov stations (TAIGA-HiSCORE) and three IACTs deployed over an area of ∼ 1 km 2 . The installation of the array is planned to be finished in 2019 while the data-taking can start already during the commissioning phase. The joint reconstruction of energy, direction, and core position of the imaging and non-imaging detectors will allow us to increase the distance between the IACTs up to 800 m, therefore providing a low-cost, highly sensitive detector. The relatively low cost together with the high sensitivity for energies ≥ 30–50 TeV make this pioneering technique very attractive for exploring galactic PeVatrons and cosmic rays. In addition to the Cherenkov light detectors we intend to deploy surface and underground muon detectors over an area of 1 km 2 with a total area of about 1000 m 2 . The results of the first season of coincident operation of the first ∼ 4 m diameter IACT with an aperture of ∼ 10°with 30 stations of TAIGA-HiSCORE will be presented.

We present the earliest astronomical observation of a high energy neutrino error box in which its variability was discovered after high-energy neutrinos detection. The one robotic telescope of the MASTER global international network (Lipunov et al. 2010) automatically imaged the error box of the very high-energy neutrino event IceCube-170922A. Observations were carried out in minute after the IceCube-170922A neutrino event was detected by the IceCube observatory at the South Pole. MASTER found the blazar TXS 0506+056 to be in the off-state after one minute and then switched to the on-state no later than two hours after the event. The effect is observed at a 50-sigma significance level. The article presents the relevance and advantages of the new gamma observatory TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy), which is being constructed in the Tunka Valley 50 km from Lake Baikal. Various detectors of the six TAIGA gamma observatory arrays register the Cherenkov and radio radiation, as well as the electron and muon components of EAS. The primary objective of the TAIGA gamma observatory is to study the high-energy part of the gamma-ray spectrum, in particular, in order to search for Galactic PeVatrons. The energy, direction, and position of the EAS axis are reconstructed in the observatory based on the data of the wide-angle Cherenkov detectors of the TAIGA-HiSCORE experiment. Taking into account this information, the gamma quanta are distinguished from the hadron background using the data obtained by the muon detectors and telescopes that register the EAS image in the Cherenkov light. In this hybrid mode of operation, the atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes can operate in the mono-mode, and the distance between them can be increased to 800–1000 m, which makes it possible to construct an array with an area of 5 km2 and more at relatively low cost and in a short time. By 2019, the first stage of the gamma observatory with an area of 1 km2 will be constructed; its expected integral sensitivity for detecting the gamma radiation with an energy of 100 TeV at observation of the source for 300 hours will be approximately $$2 \times 5$$ 10–13 TeV cm–2s–1.

Over the past few years, the TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma-ray Astronomy) observatory has been being deployed in the Tunka Valley, Republic of Buryatia. It is designed for studying gamma rays of energy above 30 TeV and performing searches for sources of galactic cosmic rays with energies in the vicinity of 1 PeV, which is an energy region around the classic knee in the cosmic-ray energy spectrum. The first phase of the observatory will be situated at a distance of about 50 km from Lake Baikal at the site of the Tunka-133 array. The TAIGA gamma observatory will include a network of 500 wide-angle (0.6 sr) Cherenkov detectors (TAIGA-HiSCORE array) and up to 16 atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (ACT) designed for analyzing the EAS images (imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, or IACT) and positioned within an area of 5 km2. The observatory will also include muon detectors of total area 2000 m2 distributed over an area of 1 km2. Within the next three years, it is planned to enhance the area of the TAIGA-HiSCORE array by a factor of four—from 0.25 km2 to 1 km2; to supplement the existing IACT with two new ones; and to deploy new muon detectors with a total coverage of 200 m2. The structure of the new observatory is described along with the data analysis techniques used. The most interesting physical results are presented, and the research program for the future is discussed.

The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is a digital radio array operating in the frequency band of 30-80 MHz and detecting radio emission from air-showers produced by cosmic rays with energies above 100 PeV. The experiment is installed at the site of the TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic rays and Gamma Astronomy) observatory and performs joint measurements with the co-located particle and air-Cherenkov detectors in passive mode receiving a trigger from the latter. Tunka-Rex collects data since 2012, and during the last five years went through several upgrades. As a result the density of the antenna field was increased by three times since its commission. In this contribution we present the latest results of Tunka-Rex experiment, particularly an updated analysis and efficiency study, which have been applied to the measurement of the mean shower maximum as a function of energy for cosmic rays of energies up to EeV. The future plans are also discussed: investigations towards an energy spectrum of cosmic rays with Tunka-Rex and their mass composition using a combination of Tunka-Rex data with muon measurements by the particle detector Tunka-Grande., Comment: ARENA2018 proceedings

The Tunka-Grande and TAIGA-Muon arrays are the part of a single experimental complex, which also includes the Tunka-133 and TAIGA-HiSCORE (High Sensitivity COsmic Rays and gamma Explorer) wide-angle Cherenkov arrays, TAIGA-IACT array (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope) and Tunka-Rex radio antennas array (Tunka Radio Extension). This complex is located in the Tunka Valley (Buryatia Republic, Russia), 50 km from Lake Baikal. It is aimed at investigating the energy spectrum and mass composition of charged cosmic rays in the energy range 100 TeV - 1000 PeV, searching for diffuse gamma rays above 100 TeV and studying local sources of gamma rays with energies above 30 TeV. This report outlines 3 key points. The first is a description of the Tunka-Grande and TAIGA-Muon scintillation arrays. The second part presents preliminary results of the search for diffuse gamma rays with energies above 50 PeV according to the Tunka-Grande data. The third part is devoted to the prospects of the search for diffuse gamma rays with energies above 100 TeV using the TAIGA-Muon array.

TAIGA array addresses gamma-ray astronomy at energies from a few TeV to several PeV as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV. A 1 km2 TAIGA setup will consist of 120 wide-angle detectors of the Cherenkov timing array TAIGA-HiSCORE and three imaging air Cherenkov telescopes with the field of view diameter of 9.6°. In this paper, first experimental results of the first operation stage are presented: signal detection from two gamma-ray sources, the Crab Nebula and Markarian 421, by the first IACT in stand-alone mode. The detected signal is shown to be in agreement with the Monte Carlo expectation. In future, gamma-ray signal will be detected by a larger number of TAIGA telescopes as well as the TAIGA-HiSCORE array, that is, in combined operation mode.

The combination of a wide angle timing Cherenkov array and Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes operated in mono mode offers a cost-effective way to construct a few square kilometers array for ultrahigh-energy gamma astronomy. The first stage of the TAIGA Observatory (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) is described here. It will comprise TAIGA-HiSCORE - 120 wide angle Cherenkov stations distributed over an area of 1.0 km2 and three IACTs (TAIGA-IACT).

The Tunka-HISCORE wide-angle Cherenkov array, one part of the planned TAIGA integrated gamma observatory intended for investigations in the field of high-energy (>30 TeV) gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic-ray physics, is deployed in the Tunka Valley (Buryat Republic). The first results from operating a prototype array composed of nine stations spread over an area of ∼0.1 square kilometers during the winter of 2013–2014 are presented. Data processing techniques are described, along with data on the accuracy of reconstructing the position of a shower’s axis, energy, and angle of arrival. The differential spectrum of all cosmic-ray particles in a shower in the energy range of 2 × 1014 to 2 × 1016 eV is presented and compared to the available data.

A central question of Astroparticle Physics, the origin of cosmic rays, still remains unsolved. HiSCORE (Hundred*i Square-km Cosmic ORigin Explorer) is a concept for a large-area wide-angle non-imaging air shower detector, addressing this question by searching for cosmic ray pevatrons in the energy range from 10TeV to few PeV and cosmic rays in the energy range above 100TeV. In the framework of the Tunka-HiSCORE project, first prototypes have been deployed on the site of the Tunka-133 experiment, where we plan to install an engineering array covering an area of the order of 1km2. On the same site, also imaging and particle detectors are planned, potentially allowing a future hybrid detector system. Here we present the HiSCORE detector principle, its potential for cosmic ray origin search and the status of ongoing activities in the framework of the Tunka-HiSCORE experiment.

International audience; This paper presents the first investigation results of possible coincidences of optical transients in the MASTERglobal robotic telescope net database with the localization regions of VHE and UHE neutrino alert events fromANTARES and IceCube observatories. MASTER is the first robotic telescopic system in Russia, dedicated tooptical observation and registration of the most energetic and fastest explosive processes in the Universe. Thegoal is a deeper and more thorough study of space and time coincidences of the MASTER optical transientsand high energy neutrinos.

Newly formed black holes of stellar mass launch collimated outflows (jets) of ionized matter that approach the speed of light. These outflows power prompt, brief and intense flashes of γ-rays known as γ-ray bursts (GRBs), followed by longer-lived afterglow radiation that is detected across the electromagnetic spectrum. Measuring the polarization of the observed GRB radiation provides a direct probe of the magnetic fields in the collimated jets. Rapid-response polarimetric observations of newly discovered bursts have probed the initial afterglow phase1, 2, 3, and show that, minutes after the prompt emission has ended, the degree of linear polarization can be as high as 30 per cent—consistent with the idea that a stable, globally ordered magnetic field permeates the jet at large distances from the central source3. By contrast, optical4, 5, 6 and γ-ray7, 8, 9 observations during the prompt phase have led to discordant and often controversial10, 11, 12 results, and no definitive conclusions have been reached regarding the origin of the prompt radiation or the configuration of the magnetic field. Here we report the detection of substantial (8.3 ± 0.8 per cent from our most conservative simulation), variable linear polarization of a prompt optical flash that accompanied the extremely energetic and long-lived prompt γ-ray emission from GRB 160625B. Our measurements probe the structure of the magnetic field at an early stage of the jet, closer to its central black hole, and show that the prompt phase is produced via fast-cooling synchrotron radiation in a large-scale magnetic field that is advected from the black hole and distorted by dissipation processes within the jet.

The Advanced LIGO observatory recently reported the first direct detection of gravitational waves predicted by Einstein (1916). We report on the first optical observations of the Gravitational Wave (GW) source GW150914 error region with the Global MASTER Robotic Net. We detected several optical transients, which proved to be unconnected with the GW event. Our result is consistent with the assumption that gravitational waves were produced by a binary black hole merger. The detection of the event confirmed the main prediction of the population synthesis performed with the "Scenario Machine" formulated in Lipunov1997b., 11 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

We present physical motivations and advantages of the new gamma-observatory TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and gamma-ray astronomy). TAIGA will be located in the Tunka valley, 50 km to the west of Lake Baikal, at the same place as the integrating air Cherenkov detector for cosmic rays Tunka-133. The TAIGA array is a complex, hybrid detector for ground-based gamma-ray astronomy for energies from a few TeV to several PeV as well as for cosmic ray studies from 100 TeV to several EeV. The array will consist of a wide angle Cherenkov array – TAIGA-HiSCORE with 5km2 area, a net of 16 IACT telescopes (with FOV of about 9.72°×9.72°) as well as muon and other detectors. We present the current status of the array construction.

We present a status of the Baikal-GVD Project. The objective of this project is a construction of a km3-scale neutrino telescope in the Lake Baikal. As an important milestone, the first GVD engineering array has been deployed and ran in April, 2011. Application of a completely new technology gave us an opportunity to study all the basic elements of the future full detector and to finalize the GVD technical design. We discuss the configuration and the design of the engineering array as well as data performance with the preliminary results.

Since the amplitude of the radio signal can be measured absolutely and increases with the shower energy, radio measurements can be used to determine the air-shower energy on an absolute scale. We show that calibrated measurements of radio detectors operated in coincidence with host experiments measuring air showers based on other techniques can be used for comparing the energy scales of these host experiments. Using two approaches, first via direct amplitude measurements, and second via comparison of measurements with air shower simulations, we compare the energy scales of the air-shower experiments Tunka-133 and KASCADE-Grande, using their radio extensions, Tunka-Rex and LOPES, respectively. Due to the consistent amplitude calibration for Tunka-Rex and LOPES achieved by using the same reference source, this comparison reaches an accuracy of approximately 10%10% – limited by some shortcomings of LOPES, which was a prototype experiment for the digital radio technique for air showers. In particular we show that the energy scales of cosmic-ray measurements by the independently calibrated experiments KASCADE-Grande and Tunka-133 are consistent with each other on this level., Published by North-Holland Publ., Amsterdam

We report early optical linear polarization observations of two gamma-ray bursts made with the MASTER robotic telescope network. We found the minimum polar- ization for GRB150301B to be 8% at the beginning of the initial stage, whereas we detected no polarization for GRB150413A either at the rising branch or after the burst reached the power-law afterglow stage. This is the earliest measurement of the polarization (in cosmological rest frame) of gamma-ray bursts. The primary intent of the paper is to discover optical emission and publish extremely rare (unique) high- quality light curves of the prompt optical emission of gamma-ray bursts during the non-monotonic stage of their evolution. The Tunka observatory is located close to Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia. Its main detector, Tunka-133, is an array of photomultipliers measuring Cherenkov light of air showers initiated by cosmic rays in the energy range of approximately 10 16 − 10 18 eV . In the last years, several extensions have been built at the Tunka site, e.g., a scintillator array named Tunka-Grande, a sophisticated air-Cherenkov-detector prototype named HiSCORE, and the radio extension Tunka-Rex. Tunka-Rex started operation in October 2012 and currently features 44 antennas distributed over an area of about 3 km 2 , which measure the radio emission of the same air showers detected by Tunka-133 and Tunka-Grande. Tunka-Rex is a technological demonstrator that the radio technique can provide an economic extension of existing air-shower arrays. The main scientific goal is the cross-calibration with the air-Cherenkov measurements. By this cross-calibration, the precision for the reconstruction of the energy and mass of the primary cosmic-ray particles can be determined. Finally, Tunka-Rex can be used for cosmic-ray physics at energies close to 1 EeV, where the standard Tunka-133 analysis is limited by statistics. In contrast to the air-Cherenkov measurements, radio measurements are not limited to dark, clear nights and can provide an order of magnitude larger exposure.

We present results of the prompt, early, and afterglow optical observations of five gamma-ray bursts, GRBs 100901A, 100902A, 100905A, 100906A, and 101020A, made with the Mobile Astronomical System of TElescope-Robots in Russia (MASTER-II net), the 1.5-m telescope of Sierra-Nevada Observatory, and the 2.56-m Nordic Optical Telescope. For two sources, GRB 100901A and GRB 100906A, we detected optical counterparts and obtained light curves starting before cessation of gamma-ray emission, at 113 s and 48 s after the trigger, respectively. Observations of GRB 100906A were conducted with two polarizing filters. Observations of the other three bursts gave the upper limits on the optical flux; their properties are briefly discussed. More detailed analysis of GRB 100901A and GRB 100906A supplemented by Swift data provides the following results and indicates different origins of the prompt optical radiation in the two bursts. The light curves patterns and spectral distributions suggest a common production site of the prompt optical and high-energy emission in GRB 100901A. Results of spectral fits for GRB 100901A in the range from the optical to X-rays favor power-law energy distributions with similar values of the optical extinction in the host galaxy. GRB 100906A produced a smoothly peaking optical light curve suggesting that the prompt optical radiation in this GRB originated in a front shock. This is supported by a spectral analysis. We have found that the Amati and Ghirlanda relations are satisfied for GRB 100906A. An upper limit on the value of the optical extinction on the host of GRB 100906A is obtained.

The first stage Baikal Neutrino Telescope NT200 has been operating since 1998 and was upgraded to the 10 Mton detector NT200+ in 2005. The preparation towards a development of a km 3 -scale detector in Lake Baikal is currently a central activity point. As an important milestone a km 3 -prototype Cherenkov string, based on completely new technology, was installed in 2008 and has been successfully operating together with NT200+. It was upgraded in April 2009. Also, we review the status of high-energy acoustic neutrino detection activities in Lake Baikal.

The history, current status, and prospects for the development of the Baikal Neutrino Project are considered. The main physical results obtained with the help of NT200 and NT200+ neutrino telescopes are presented.

We review the status of the Lake Baikal Neutrino Experiment. The Neutrino Telescope NT200 has been operating since 1998 and has been upgraded to the 10 Mton detector NT200+ in 2005. We present selected astroparticle physics results from long-term operation of NT200. Also discussed are activities towards acoustic detection of UHE-energy neutrinos, and results of associated science activities. Preparation towards a km3-scale (Gigaton volume) detector in Lake Baikal is currently a central activity. We review the status of the Baikal Neutrino Experiment. The Neutrino Telescope NT200 is operating in Lake Baikal since 1998 and has been upgraded to the 10 Mton detector NT200+ in 2005. We present selected results concerning astroparticle physics as well as results of environmental studies. We describe the strategy of creating a Gigaton (km3) scale neutrino detector at Lake Baikal. First steps of activities towards a km3 Baikal neutrino telescope, including the development of acoustic high energy neutrino detection method are discussed.

The 10 Mton scale Neutrino telescope NT 200 + is operating in Lake Baikal since April, 2005. It's main physics goal is the detection of high energy neutrino cascades in the 10 2 – 10 5 TeV energy range. The NT 200 + sensitivity to astrophysical diffuse neutrinos is four times that of it's predecessor NT200 the telescope that has been operating since 1998, yielding a variety of physics results. A km-scale (Gigaton Volume) Neutrino telescope in Lake Baikal is planned, the R&D phase has started in 2006. We give the basic layout of this Baikal km3-detector, which will be made of building blocks similar to NT 200 + .

The Baikal neutrino telescope NT200 takes data since 1998. In 2005, the deployment of three additional strings for common operation with NT200 was finished. The Baikal Neutrino Telescope NT200 takes data since April 1998. On April 9th, 2005, the 10 Mton scale detector NT200$+$ was put into operation in Lake Baikal. We review the present status of the Baikal Neutrino Experiment and present results of a search for upward-going atmospheric neutrinos and magnetic monopoles obtained with the detector NT200. The results of a search for very high energy neutrinos are presented and an upper limit on the extraterrestrial diffuse neutrino flux is obtained. We describe the strategy of upgrading the NT200 to NT200+ and creating a detector on the Gigaton scale at Lake Baikal. The first results obtained with the new NT200+ detector as a basic cell of a future Gigaton detector are presented.

The hydroacoustic coordinate-measuring system of the NT-200 Baikal neutrino telescope is described. It is a ranging long-base hydroacoustic system constantly operating in an automated or interactive mode and capable of measuring the coordinates of the detecting modules of the NT-200 to within 20 cm. Special attention is given to the justification of the estimate of the coordinate measurement errors. As an illustration, some results of measuring the coordinates of the elements of the NT-200 and the hydrophysical characteristics of lake Baikal are presented.

The TAIGA observatory addresses ground-based gamma-ray astronomy at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV . TAIGA will be located in the Tunka valley, ~ 50 km West from Lake Baikal. The different detectors of the TAIGA will be grouped in 6 arrays to measure Cherenkov and radio emission as well as electron and muon components of atmospheric showers. The combination of the wide angle Cherenkov detectors of the TAIGA-HiSCORE array and the 4-m Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes of the TAIGA-IACT array with their FoV of 10×10 degrees and underground muon detectors offers a very cost effective way to construct a 5 km2 array for gamma-ray astronomy.

The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is an antenna array consisting of 63 antennas at the location of the TAIGA facility (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) in Eastern Siberia, nearby Lake Baikal. Tunka-Rex is triggered by the air-Cherenkov array Tunka-133 during clear and moonless winter nights and by the scintillator array Tunka-Grande during the remaining time. Tunka-Rex measures the radio emission from the same air-showers as Tunka-133 and Tunka-Grande, but with a higher threshold of about 100 PeV. During the first stages of its operation, Tunka-Rex has proven, that sparse radio arrays can measure air-showers with an energy resolution of better than 15\% and the depth of the shower maximum with a resolution of better than 40 g/cm\textsuperscript{2}. To improve and interpret our measurements as well as to study systematic uncertainties due to interaction models, we perform radio simulations with CORSIKA and CoREAS. In this overview we present the setup of Tunka-Rex, discuss the achieved results and the prospects of mass-composition studies with radio arrays.

We present results of optical polarization observations performed with the MASTER robotic net for three types of objects: gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and blazars. For the Swift gamma-ray bursts GRB100906A, GRB110422A, GRB121011A, polarization observations were obtained during very early stages of optical emission. For GRB100906A it was the first prompt optical polarization observation in the world. Photometry in polarizers is presented for Type Ia Supernova 2012bh during 20 days, starting on March 27, 2012. We find that the linear polarization of SN 2012bh at the early stage of the envelope expansion was less than 3%. Polarization measurements for the blazars OC 457, 3C 454.3, QSO B1215+303, 87GB 165943.2+395846 at single nights are presented. We infer the degree of the linear polarization and polarization angle. The blazars OC 457 and 3C 454.3 were observed during their periods of activity. The results show that MASTER is able to measure substantially polarized light; at the same time it is not suitable for determining weak polarization (less than 5%) of dim objects (fainter than 16$^m$). Polarimetric observations of the optical emission from gamma-ray bursts and supernovae are necessary to investigate the nature of these transient objects., Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables; Exposure times in Table 2 have been corrected

A Cerenkov detector of extensive air showers developed for joint operation with the Baikal deep-water HT-200 neutrino telescope is described.

The Baikal neutrino telescope NT200 is in operation since April, 1998. We present physics results obtained with this detector during 1998–2002. Since April 2005, the upgraded 10-Mton scale telescope NT200+ is operating. For a km3-scale neutrino telescope in Lake Baikal, the R&D phase has started in 2006.

Since one and a half year, the underwater Cherenkov telescope NT-36 consisting of 36 photomultipliers attached to 3 strings is operated in lake Baikal. The large statistics of collected data allows for comparison with Monte Carlo predictions starting from the level of detector response up to more sophisticated dependences like the angular distribution of muon intensity.

We have carried out photometric observations of the occultation of the star HIP 97157 by asteroid (41) Daphne on 2013 October 25 with the 40 cm telescope of the Global MASTER Robotic Net, located in the Tunka Valley near Irkutsk. We have obtained the photometric drift-scan of the occultation in broadband visible light. The photometric curve of the occultation of the star by asteroid Daphne was obtained. From analysis of this curve we have determined the length of the "chord" of the asteroid in the direction of its motion corresponding to the time interval during which the asteroid completely "screened" the star's light: a 146.86 ± 0.24 km. Also, assuming that the angular diameter of the star is equal to d 0002, we have determined the angles between the velocity vector of the asteroid and its two opposite edges (considered as straight lines) where the disappearance of the star and its reappearance occurred: for the front edge of the asteroid and for its opposite edge. So these edges of the asteroid are inclined toward each other at an angle of about 8°.

The HiSCORE (Hundred Square km Cosmic ORigin Explorer) project is a ground-based large-area wideangle air shower detector array that will measure gamma rays and cosmic rays in the energy range of 10 TeV up to 1EeV. Each detector array station consists of four separate light collectors with an 8-inch photomultiplier (PMT) at each end. The first station prototype has already been deployed to Tunka valley. On-site station integration and first measurements have been made. This poster will focus on the hardware aspects and the first light results of the single station.

Addressing the mysteries of cosmic rays requires a comprehensive observational approach, including information on mass composition and spectrum (from CR nuclei) as well as directional information (gamma-rays or neutrinos). HiSCORE covers both approaches using indirect air-shower observations of cosmic rays from 100 TeV to 1 EeV and gamma-rays in the so far poorly covered energy range from 10 TeV to several PeV. Among other questions of astroparticle and particle physics, HiSCORE will allow cosmic ray composition and spectral measurements in the transition range between Galactic and Extragalactic origin. Searching for gamma-rays from the PeV-accelerators, the pevatrons, will consititute a crucial building-block for solving the question of the origin of Galactic cosmic rays. HiSCORE is an array of non-imaging light-collecting stations for Cherenkov light-front sampling. The lateral Cherenkov photon density and arrival-time distribution are measured, allowing the reconstruction of the direction, the energy, and the particle type (mainly shower depth) of the primary particle. A prototype detector station was developed and first air-shower measurements were performed in the Tunka valley (Siberia). The deployment of an engineering array of up to 1 square-km is planned on the Tunka cosmic ray experiment site in Siberia for 2012/2013.

We report the present status and perspectives of the feasibility study to detect cosmic neutrinos acoustically in the Lake Baikal. The results of background studies are presented. It was shown that most of the detected neutrino-like pulses come from the lake surface. This fact has been used in the project of an acoustic prototype detector that consists of compact Acoustic Sensor Modules with 4-channel antennas each, arranged above the Baikal Neutrino Telescope at shallow depths and “listening” the deep-water layers of the lake.

The angular resolution of the Cerenkov detector of extensive air showers, developed for joint operation with the Baikal deep-water NT-200 neutrino telescope, was investigated. The angular resolution was shown to be within 1°.
