Abstract

Highly extended gamma-ray emission around the Geminga pulsar was discovered by Milagro and verified by HAWC. Despite many observations with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs), detection of gamma-ray emission on angular scales exceeding the IACT field-of-view has proven challenging. Recent developments in analysis techniques have enabled the detection of significant emission around Geminga in archival data with H.E.S.S.. In 2019, further data on the Geminga region were obtained with an adapted observation strategy. Following the announcement of the detection of significant TeV emission around Geminga in archival data, in this contribution we present the detection in an independent dataset. Abstract

Supernova remnants (SNRs) are among the most important targets for γ-ray observatories. Being prominent non-thermal sources, they are very likely responsible for the acceleration of the bulk of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs). To firmly establish the SNR paradigm for the origin of cosmic rays, it should be confirmed that protons are indeed accelerated in, and released from, SNRs with the appropriate flux and spectrum. This can be done by detailed theoretical models which account for microphysics of acceleration and various radiation processes of hadrons and leptons. The current generation of Cherenkov telescopes has insufficient sensitivity to constrain theoretical models. A new facility, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), will have superior capabilities and may finally resolve this long standing issue of high-energy astrophysics. We want to assess the capabilities of CTA to reveal the physics of various types of SNRs in the initial 2000 years of their evolution. During this time, the efficiency to accelerate cosmic rays is highest. We perform time-dependent simulations of the hydrodynamics, the magnetic fields, the cosmic-ray acceleration, and the non-thermal emission for type Ia, Ic and IIP SNRs. We calculate the CTA response to the γ-ray emission from these SNRs for various ages and distances, and we perform a realistic analysis of the simulated data. We derive distance limits for the detectability and resolvability of these SNR types at several ages. We test the ability of CTA to reconstruct their morphological and spectral parameters as a function of their distance. Finally, we estimate how well CTA data will constrain the theoretical models. Abstract

We present results of Monte Carlo simulations for the Cherenkov Telescope Array --- the next generation observatory of very high energy gamma rays. These calculations are intended to verify design concept for various elements of the array: single telescope design, camera electronics, array configuration, camera and array trigger, etc. The simulations consist of two parts: simulation of the distribution of Cherenkov photons from atmospheric air showers and calculation of response of the telescopes during the detection process. In design study phase of the experiment a large amount of simulations of air showers has been performed with the use of EGEE grid infrastructure, especially centers in Lyon and ACC Cyfronet AGH. Currently we are investigating the details of design of a small telescope --- one of several kinds intended for the array.

Abstract

The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way at a distance of approximately 48 kpc. Despite its distance it harbours several interesting targets for TeV gamma-ray observations. The composite supernova remnant N 157B/PSR J05367-6910 was discovered by H.E.S.S. being an emitter of very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays. It is the most distant pulsar wind nebula ever detected in VHE gamma-rays. Another very exciting target is SN 1987A, the remnant of the most recent supernova explosion that occurred in the neighbourhood of the Milky Way. Models for Cosmic Ray acceleration in this remnant predict gamma-ray emission at a level detectable by H.E.S.S. but this has not been detected so far. Fermi/LAT discovered diffuse high energy (HE) gamma-ray emission from the general direction of the massive star forming region 30 Doradus but no clear evidence for emission from either N 157B or SN 1987A has been published. The part of the LMC containing these objects has been observed regularly with the H.E.S.S. telescopes since 2003. With deep observations carried out in 2010 a very good exposure of this part of the sky has been obtained. The current status of the H.E.S.S. LMC observations is reported along with new results on N 157B and SN 1987A.

Abstract

GLAST is a gamma‐ray mission which will be launched in autumn 2007. It is equipped with the GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM) which detects GRBs with high reliability and provides a position and energy spectrum in the range between 10 keV and 25 MeV. The Large Area Telescope (LAT) will observe photons with energies from 20 MeV up to more than 300 GeV.Here we present a systematic study of the performance of the LAT for the reconstruction of the energy spectrum of Gamma‐Ray Bursts (GRBs), based on the simulation of 1 year of data taking. We focus on deviations from a pure power‐law photon spectrum (exponential cut‐offs). This feature can provide insight in the particle acceleration mechanisms at work in GRBs; and it can be used to probe the Extra‐Galactic Background Light.

Abstract

The pulsar wind nebulae (PWN) around the Vela and PSR B1706‐44 pulsars have been observed in 2003 and 2004 with the H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescopes. No evidence of a γ‐ray emission from either source is seen and upper limits on the integrated flux are reported.

Abstract

The most massive stars appear grouped in giant molecular clouds. Their strong wind activity generates large structures known as super bubbles and induces collective effects which could accelerate particles up to the high energy and produce gamma-rays. The best objects to observe these effects are young massive star clusters in which no supernova explosion has occurred yet. Such star associations are typically still embedded in their parent molecular cloud, which can be traced by the emission due to ionization by the stellar light (HII region). Considering this region as a spherical leaky-box surrounding a central cosmic ray source, a phenomenological model has been developed to estimate cosmic-rays and gamma-rays production for several clusters. The expected gamma-ray flux have been finally compared to the present and future gamma-ray telescopes sensitivities.
