A stellar occultation by the extreme large-perihelion trans-Neptunian object (541132) Lele\={a}k\={u}honua (also known by the provisional designation of 2015 TG387) was predicted by the Lucky Star project and observed with the Research and Education Collaborative Occultation Network on 2018 October 20 UT. A single detection and a nearby nondetection provide constraints for the size and albedo. When a circular profile is assumed, the radius is $r={110}_{-10}^{+14}$ km, corresponding to a geometric albedo ${p}_{V}={0.21}_{-0.05}^{+0.03}$, for an adopted absolute magnitude of H V = 5.6, typical of other objects in dynamically similar orbits. In terms of scientific output, the best way to study solar system bodies is sending spacecraft to make in-situ measurements or to observe at close distance. Probably, the second best means to learn about important physical properties of solar system objects is through stellar occultations. By combining occultation observations from several sites, size and shape can be derived with kilometric accuracy. Also, atmospheric properties can be derived if the body has an atmosphere. Furthermore, the technique can detect rings and even satellites (although rarely) around the main body. Except for the very special cases of Pluto and Charon, stellar occultations by Transneptunian Objects (TNOs) had never been observed until October 2009. This was because the ephemeris of the TNOs have much larger uncertainties than their angular diameters (typically of the order of ~10 milliarcsecond) and also because stellar catalogs were not accurate to the milliarcsecond level. Despite the difficulties, at the time of this writing, 43 occultations by 22 different Trans-Neptunian Objects, and 17 occultations by 5 Centaurs have been detected thanks to the efforts of several teams. Due to the complications of accurately predicting and observing these events, most of the successes have been achieved through wide international collaboration, which is a key issue to succeed in observing stellar occultations by TNOs. Multichord occultations are typically detected at a rate of ~3 per year on average, whereas the majority of the observed occultations are single-chord detections, which means that only one site detects the occultation. In these cases, no tight constraints on size and shape can be derived from those observations alone. We present observations of five stellar occultations for (11351) Leucus and reports from two efforts on (21900) Orus. Both objects are prime mission candidate targets for the Lucy Discovery mission. Combined results for Leucus indicate a very dark surface with p V = 0.037 ± 0.001, which is derived from the average of the multichord occultations. Our estimate of the triaxial ellipsoidal shape is for axial diameters of 63.8 × 36.6 × 29.6 km assuming that the spin pole is normal to the line of sight. The actual shape of the object is only roughly elliptical in profile at each epoch. Significant topography is seen with horizontal scales up to 30 km and vertical scales up to 5 km. The most significant feature is a large depression on the southern end of the object as seen from a terrestrial viewpoint. For this work we developed a method to correct for differential refraction, accounting for the difference in color between the target object and the reference stars for astrometry derived from ground-based images.

Distant objects in the solar system are crucial to better understand the history and evolution of its outskirts. The stellar occultation technique allows the determination of their sizes and shapes with kilometric accuracy, a detailed investigation of their immediate vicinities, as well as the detection of tenuous atmospheres. The prediction of such events is a key point in this study, and yet accurate enough predictions are available to a handful of objects only. In this work, we briefly discuss the dramatic impact that both the astrometry from the Gaia space mission and the deep sky surveys -- the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope in particular -- will have on the prediction of stellar occultations and how they may influence the future of the study of distant small solar system bodies through this technique., 10 pages, 3 figures, ACM2017

We used CCD (charge coupled device) astrometric data to predict where the occultation path of the star Tr 176 was located, on July 18, 1997. It could be seen from northern Australia and the southern section of North America. We set up an array of portable and mixed telescopes which had high-speed photometric equipment to observe the occultation. Goals included the following: (1) mapping the central flash; (2) obtaining light curves for the signal-to-noise ratio; (3) acquiring light curves from Triton's disk. We combined these with data from others to find the radius and geometry of the half-light surface of the atmosphere, as well as the equivalent-isothermal temperature latitudes below the occultation on Triton.

We have completed a search for candidates for stellar occultations by Triton over the years 1995-1999. CCd strip scan images provided star positions in the relevant sky area to a depth of about 17.5 R magnitude. Over this time period, we find that Triton passes within 1.0 arcsec of 75 stars. Appulses with geocentric minimum separations of less than 0.35 arcsec will result in stellar occultations, but further astrometry and photometry is necessary to refine individual predictions for identification of actual occultations. Finder charts are included to aid in further studies and prediction refinement. The two most promising potential occultations, Tr176 and Tr180, occur in 1997.

Predictions, based on a computerized comparison of asteroid ephemerides with the catalog positions of 567,500 stars, are given for 155 occultations of stars by asteroids in 1995 and 1996. On average, the predictions are expected to be more accurate than in earlier searches because of the use of more modern star catalogs. A number of very favorable occultations, visible in North America and elsewhere, are discussed.

The occultation of γ Geminorum by asteroid 381 Myrrha on 1991 January 13, observed in Japan and China, was the brightest event ever seen of a stellar occultation by an asteroid. By the analysis of the timing data of this event measured in Japan, it is shown that the cross section of Myrrha is well fitted with an ellipse of (147.2±2.4) km × (126.6±7.9) km. An upper limit of the diameter of γ Geminorum is also estimated to be 2.6 milliarcsec. The companion of γ Geminorum of about 7.5 mag was sited at separation (64±8) milliarcsec in the direction P=129°±59°, and the relative position of Myrrha to γ Geminorum was determined to an accuracy of about 1 milliarcsec

Observations of the 24 May 1981 occulation of an uncatalogued star by Neptune made at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory have been analyzed to yield temperature profiles of Neptune's upper atmosphere for number densities near 5 x 10 to the 13th per cu cm. The mean temperatures at immersion (latitude - 56 deg) and emersion (latitude - 16 deg) obtained by numerical inversion were 140 + or - 10 K and 154 + or - 10 K, respectively. The immersion and emersion profiles are remarkably similar in overall shape, suggestive of global atmospheric layering. From the astrometry of the event, precise relative positions of Neptune and the occulted star were obtained.

The development of automatic, computer-controlled, electronic equipment, under the direction of an intelligent user, has significantly affected the output of scientific knowledge from astronomical research. This increased output is as much a result of the easing and/or elimination of heretofore tedious tasks as it is a result of vast increases in data acquisition rates via observing systems which make more efficient use of in-coming electromagnetic radiation. One such automated system (Shelus et al, 1977) has been implemented by the present authors to predict occultations of stars by Solar System objects. In the past these predictions have been a time consuming task which was made even more onerous since only a very few observable phenomena were found. Perhaps of even more importance is that, since candidate objects to be occulted typically were obtained from star catalogs, such a search was incomplete. Note that phenomena involving stars fainter than normal catalog limits are certainly relevant in the cases of Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, minor planets and the natural satellites of the major planets.

The recent confirmation of the discovery of a satellite of the minor planet 532 Herculina indicates that other similar anomalous sightings are probably also due to satellites, which must therefore be numerous and commonplace. There are now 23 candidate satellites for eight minor planets, and no one of these minor planets occulting a star has failed to show evidence of at least one secondary event. Such companions are gravitationally stable but apparently have rapid tidal evolution rates.

The occultations observations are traditional at Abastumani Observatory. About 3 years ago the work was started on the development of the observational equipment for measuring different characteristics of various events under investigations with as high efficiency as possible, but using relatively small aperture telescope. The program is in progress, so, at present, the following pulse-counting system is built and put into operation.

Observations of the September 11, 1983 occultation of 14 Psc by the asteroid (51) Nemausa were obtained at six sites distributed across the northern two-thirds of the track. The observations are well represented by an elliptical limb profile with a semimajor axis of 84.9 + or - 2.0 km and oblateness (1-b'/a') 0.20 + or - 0.05. The mean radius of 74 + or - 4 km agrees with the 1979 occultation effective radius of 76.5 + or - 4 km and the published radiometric radius of 75.5 km (Morrison and Zellner, 1979).

The occultation on Dec. 11, 1979, of AG + 0 deg 1022 by Juno was observed photoelectrically from 15 sites distributed across the occultation track. The observations are well represented by a mean elliptical limb profile having semimajor and semiminor axes of 145.2 + or 0.8 and 122.8 + or - 1.9 km, respectively. The corresponding effective diameter of Juno is 267 + or - 5 km, where the uncertainty has been conservatively increased to reflect the presence of limb irregularities clearly seen in the observations. Published radiometric and polarimetric diameters for Juno are 6% to 7% smaller than the occultation result. No secondary occultations attributable to possible satellites of Juno were recorded at any of 23 photoelectrically equipped observing sites.

Occultations of stars fainter than the AGK and SAO catalog limits by selected minor planets during their 1983 apparitions have been identified by scanning plates taken with the 13-in. Lowell astrograph. A total of 33 upcoming occultations have been found involving 1 Ceres, 10 Hygiea, 52 Europa, 65 Cybele, 451 Patientia, 511 Davida, and 704 Interamnia.

Predictions are presented for 11 occultations by and appulses to Uranus and its ring system for ten stars from 1981 through 1984. The brightest stars are occulted on April 26, 1981 (BD - 19 deg 4222) and on April 22, 1982 (Hyd - 20 deg 51699). The ring system occults the same star twice during March 1983 (Hyd - 21 deg 64352).

Results are presented of a search for upcoming asteroid occultations involving stars in six major astrometric catalogs containing a total of approximately 326,000 individual stars. Within stated constraints on solar elongation, asteroid angular diameter, orbit quality, and occultation duration, the search is complete for all numbered asteroids. Circumstances of 74 occultations occurring in 1986 and 59 in 1987 are described.

Predictions are presented for eight occultations by and appulses to Neptune from 1981 through 1984. Of special interest are a near-central occultation of Hyd - 22 deg 58794 on June 15, 1983, and a July 22, 1984 occultation of SAO 186001.
