From October 15th through 19th, 2012, Prof. Tiffany Jing Li of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Lehigh University visited the Communications Society Morelia, Guadalajara and Monterrey Chapters as part of the ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer Tour (DLT) program. The IEEE Communications Society provides the initiative of the DLT program, where recognized and world renowned experts give lectures at Chapters on all continents. The initiative allows students, professionals and researchers to attend open lectures given in their cities and interact with the Distinguished Lecturer to improve their knowledge and perspective on the topics presented. A biography of Gerhard Geldenhuys, a pioneer of Operations Research in South Africa. He was born on November 19, 1937 and studied a bachelor of science degree at the University of Stellenbosch. He was a member of the Operations Research Society of South Africa (ORSSA). He won the 1994 award for the best lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering at Stellenbosch University and awarded a gold medal for his contribution to science by the Southern African Association for the Advancement of Science.

The article presents information on the first congress of the French Association of Sociology, where 1015 speakers gathered and proposed a communication in a network set of themes, in addition to the participation of invited lecturers. Among them 127 benefited from the occasion to present two at four communications, whereas some made a presentation grouped on a total of 1168 communications. This congress is the occasion to give a synthetic image of the subjects for conversation which animate sociologists in France. At the congress complementary aspects of an open lexical analysis and an accumulation of closed variables were discussed. The lexical analysis is based on a census of occurrences of words, syntagms or groups words between them, without holding account, initially at least, of the variables which are likely to support these occurrences. It results from the families of lexical forms, devoid forms in themselves of signification, but which they can then reconstruct by attributing a clean logic to a continuity of frequent words.

The article highlights an international conference that took place on the subject of "The Creation and Returns of Social Capital. The State of the Art," in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from October 30-31, 2003. Organizer of the conference was the Royal Netherlands' Academy of the Arts and Sciences. The participants at the conference agreed to the fact that the most fruitful conception of social capital is a network-based conceptualization. This article highlights the 26th conference conducted by ISSR in Ixtapan de la Sal, Mexico in August 2001. As this was the Society's first full meeting in Latin America, the Programme Committee chose a theme that is aimed at decentering perspectives and paradigms for the interpretation of present-day processes in religion. In addition to the approaches that various thematic sessions and others were able to make to the theme it was at the forefront of the opening session and the two plenary sessions on which the week hinged. Research has shown that higher levels of formal education are associated with lower authoritarianism. However, some evidence suggests that this association may be severely attenuated or even eliminated in sociocultural contexts in which education is highly authoritarian. This was tested in the study by comparing the relationship between education and authoritarianism among 678 English- and Afrikaans-speaking White South African adults-two sociocultural groups whose educational institutions tend to differ markedly in authoritarianism. The results indicated a much stronger relationship between education and authoritarianism for English speakers. Among Afrikaners, authoritarianism did not show any tendency to decline with increasing education until the higher levels of tertiary education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
