This paper compares the results of four country studies (Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica and Mexico) on the relative effectiveness of channels of interactions between public research organisations (PROs) and industry in driving specific types of benefits for researchers and firms. All studies used micro-datasets developed by a joint project using common questionnaires. Channels of interactions were classified into four groups (traditional, services, bi-directional and commercial) while benefits were classified into two groups for firms (short-term production and long-term innovation) and for researchers (economic and intellectual). It is found that the bi-directional (knowledge flows in both directions) and the services (knowledge flows mainly from PROs to firms) channels drive intellectual benefits for researchers. Firms tend to value the traditional channel (i.e. graduates, publications, conferences) more than any other channel. However, it is the bi-directional channel that drives the best benefits, especially those related to contributions to innovation activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are various channels for the exchange of knowledge between public research organisations (PROs) and industry (I). This paper discusses the relative effectiveness of different channels in Argentina. We use micro-data from surveys on firms and researchers to confirm that specific channels of PRO-I interactions are predominantly associated with specific types of benefits. While the service channel is effective for driving the benefits for researchers, the traditional channel does so for firms. However, we find that only the bi-directional channel ensures long-term benefits simultaneously for both actors. Moreover, we show that firms' innovative capabilities and researchers' knowledge skills interfere in the channels--benefits relationship. Therefore, the promotion of PRO-I interactions should be designed in accordance with the types of benefits being targeted and should take account of the knowledge characteristics of the actors involved in the interaction. This paper examines the participation of the members of three catholic workers association -Círculo de Obreros de Córdoba, Asociación Artesanos de San José and Sociedad Católica Popular Italiana- to choose their authorities in Córdoba, Argentina during the first decades of the 20th Century. The study allows us to know that, besides, the indirect electoral system applied in the three cases, there are important differences which contributed in different ways to the appropriation of the concept and practice of political citizenship inaugurated in 1912. A diversity of electoral procedures can be found: from a very restricted political position more interested in religion and catholic rituals to one which granted all members the right to choose and be chosen. In the same way, the more "democratic" associations corresponded, as could be expected, to those where internal debate was more regular. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This special issue discusses the relative effectiveness of different channels of interaction between public research organisations (PROs) and industry in driving specific types of benefits for researchers and firms in Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica and Mexico). The empirical evidence comes from original micro-data collected through similar questionnaires sent to the managers of firms and PRO researchers in each country. The richness of this special issue results from its origin: it emerges as a joint motivation to understand a key aspect of PRO--industry interactions through the relationship between channels and benefits. The article announces the that the First Latin American Meeting of the Econometric Society will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina on July 14-16, 1980. The Society is calling of papers to be presented in the meeting. Abstracts of contributed papers should not exceed 300 words. They should be received before April 15, 1980 by a member of the Program Committee and should be identified by name. Finished versions of accepted papers should be sent to the Program Chairmen before May 31, 1980. A list of the members of the Program Committee is provided.

The article focuses on Sociedad de la vihuela, el laúd y la guitarra(SV) which made its international debut at the 2008 Utrecht Festival held in the Netherlands. The group was formed in Cordoba, Argentina by a group of instrument-makers, performers and musicologists in 2004. Cristina Bordas was named president and John Griffiths as vice-president of the Society in December 2008. The first president of the organization was the well-known luthier Carlos González. SV also organized an annual meeting for its members since 2005.

The article presents information on constitutionalim in civil societies in relation to Argentina. While the issue of constitutionalism is generally analyzed in terms of its contribution to the juridification of state power, little has been said about the role played by the modem constitutional complex of legally stabilizing the realm of the social as civil society. The narrowing of the concept of constitutionalism to that of limited government conceals its relevance for civil society. To highlight the dependence of modem civil societies on constitutionalism is precisely the aim of the following reflections, which will center on the analysis of the historical process of self-constitution of Argentine civil society. The Argentine context is relevant to a theory of civil society's institutionalization, for it provides an illustrative example of how the erosion of the constitutive conditions that make the existence of a modem constitutional complex possible results in the disintegration of civil society. When analyzing the concept of civil society two different aspects must be distinguished. First, an "active" dimension that refers to those associations, movements and any other forms of collective action that might contribute to the reproduction, defense or expansion of civil society. Second, a "passive" dimension that refers to those institutions that differentiate and stabilize civil society as a distinctive and autonomous sphere of social interaction.
