John Gabriel Borkman, Ibsen's penultimate play written in 1896, is analyzed in terms of its 'cinematic' qualities, highlighting its narrative continuity involving the notion of continuous space and time. Continuity in early twentieth-century cinema, late nineteenth-century popular theatre and Ibsen's play are analyzed and it is concluded that Ibsen's play John Gabriel Borkman has the same avant-garde, primarily retrospective and mostly inadvertent, potential as early cinema.
