Our applications of the SMC method with norm conserving pseudopotentials represent our effort of mixing ab initio calculation (electronic valence) with pseudo-potentials (electronic core). The present paper represents the first step to another mixture of strategies, the ab initio electronic excitation description with a pseudo (model) potential to represent the ionization process. During the review process of this manuscript by the Referees our dear friend and senior author of this manuscript, Professor Luiz Guimarães Ferreira (Guima), has passed away. Guima had a huge impact in our careers and in our lives Abstract: We propose a model potential for computing total ionization cross sections for atoms and molecules by electron impact. The potential is obtained by a fitting procedure using the Binary-Encounter-Bethe model cross sections as a starting point. We present total ionization cross section for hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen atoms and for hydrogen, nitrogen, water, methane and benzene molecules. The results obtained with our model potential are compared with results obtained with the Binary-Encounter-Bethe model and with the first Born approximation, and agreement is quite good. However, there is still a huge knowledge gap on the electronic excitation cross sections of this fundamental collision. Here, we report calculated differential and integral cross sections for elastic and electronic excitation, as well as total cross sections, for electron scattering by the benzene molecule, for impact energies in the 10-50 eV range. We have employed the Schwinger multichannel method, in two levels of approximation. By including extra diffuse functions in the second calculation, the role of higher lying Rydberg states in the multichannel coupling scheme was assessed. We found that such states have minor effects on the elastic and total cross sections. In contrast, the electronic excitation cross sections of the lower-lying bands decrease in magnitude when accounting for the higher Rydberg states, and this effect becomes more pronounced at lower impact energies. Our computed elastic cross sections are in quite good agreement with the available experimental data, whereas the comparison for the electronic excitation channels is still satisfactory. The calculations for elastic scattering were performed with the Schwinger multichannel method implemented with pseudopotentials (SMCPP) in the static-exchange (SE) plus polarization (SEP) approximation for energies up to 50 eV. The assignments for the resonance spectrum obtained in this study are, in general, in good agreement with previous results available in the literature. For electronic excitation by electron impact, the SMCPP method with N energetically open electronic states (N-open), at either the static-exchange (N(open)ch-SE) or the static-exchange-plus-polarisation (N(open)ch-SEP) approximation, was employed to calculate the scattering amplitudes using a channel coupling scheme that ranges from the 1ch-SEP up to the 89ch-SE level of approximation, depending on the energy of interest. Integral cross sections (ICSs) and differential cross sections (DCSs) were obtained for incident electron energies lying between 15 eV and 50 eV. The study focuses on the influence of multichannel coupling effects for electronically inelastic processes, more specifically, on how the number of excited states included in the open-channel space impacts upon the convergence of the cross sections at intermediate and higher energies. In particular, we found that the magnitude of DCS and ICS results for electronic excitation decreases as more channels are included in the calculations. Random uncertainty limits on these values have been found to be within 5%. Systematic errors, due to the axial magnetic beam conditions in combination with the acceptance angle of the detector, have been evaluated by integrating our calculated independent atom model with the screening corrected additivity rule and interference term elastic differential cross sections over that detection acceptance angle. Absolute vibrational-excitation ICSs, for 3 composite vibrational bands (Bands I-III), are also reported in that same energy range. In addition, ICSs calculated within our independent atom model (IAM) with screening corrected additivity rule (SCAR) formalism, extended to account for interference (I) terms that arise due to the multi-centre nature of the scattering problem, are also reported. The sum of those ICSs gives the IAM-SCAR+I total cross section (TCS) for electron-para-benzoquinone scattering. Where possible, those calculated IAM-SCAR+I ICSs are compared against corresponding results from the present measurements with an acceptable level of accord being obtained. Similarly, we also present results from our Schwinger multichannel method with pseudopotential (SMCPP) calculations. Here elastic ICSs and ICSs corresponding to the Bands 0-III of unresolved electronic-states are presented, with agreement between the SMCPP electronic-state ICSs and those from our measurements being in good qualitative accord. The energy range of our SMCPP computations is 16-50 eV. Using the binary-encounter-Bethe (BEB) approach, total ionization cross sections for this collision system were computed. Our results for the isolated monomers, also obtained in the static-exchange plus polarization approximation, are in good agreement with the available calculations and electron transmission data. Virtual orbital analysis for the lower-lying pi* anion states, with pure shape resonance character, indicates that electron attachment to the cytosine-guanine pair gives rise to resonances located on either monomer (the orbitals do not delocalize over the pair). The pi* shape resonances of the pair localized on the cytosine unit have lower energies in comparison with those of the isolated base, with the opposite trend for the guanine unit. The underlying mechanism would be the net positive charge transfer to the cytosine unit, as the guanine monomer acts as a proton donor in two out of the three hydrogen bonds formed in the pair. Even though the calculations were performed in the static-exchange approximation (due to the size of the system), the conclusions drawn were also corroborated by empirical estimates of the vertical attachment energies. The calculations were conducted with two different theoretical methodologies, the Schwinger multichannel method with pseudopotentials (SMCPP) and the independent atom method with screening corrected additivity rule (IAM-SCAR) that also now incorporates a further interference (I) term. The SMCPP with N energetically open electronic states (N-open) at the static-exchange-plus-polarisation (N(open)ch-SEP) level was used to calculate the scattering amplitudes using a channel coupling scheme that ranges from 1ch-SE up to the 89ch-SEP level of approximation. We found that in going from the 38ch-SEP to the 89ch-SEP, at all energies considered here, the elastic DCSs did not change significantly in terms of both their shapes and magnitudes. This is a good indication that our SMCPP 89ch-SEP elastic DCSs are converged with respect to the multichannel coupling effect for the investigated intermediate energies. While agreement between our IAM-SCAR+I and SMCPP 89ch-SEP computations improves as the incident electron energy increases from 15 eV, overall the level of accord is only marginal. This is particularly true at middle scattering angles, suggesting that our SCAR and interference corrections are failing somewhat for this molecule below 50 eV. We also report experimental DCS results, using a crossed-beam apparatus, for excitation of some of the unresolved ("hybrid") vibrational quanta (bands I-III) of para-benzoquinone. Those data were derived from electron energy loss spectra that were measured over a scattered electron angular range of 10 degrees-90 degrees and put on an absolute scale using our elastic SMCPP 89ch-SEP DCS results. The energy resolution of our measurements was similar to 80 meV, which is why, at least in part, the observed vibrational features were only partially resolved. Similarly, but only for the band I and band II excited electronic states, we also present results from our Schwinger multichannel method with pseudopotentials calculations. Those results are found to be in good qualitative accord with the present experimental ICSs. Specifically, differential cross sections (DCSs) have been measured and calculated for the electron-impact excitation of the electronic states of C5H4O2. The measurements were carried out at energies in the range 20-40 eV, and for scattered-electron angles between 10 degrees and 90 degrees. The energy resolution of those experiments was typically similar to 80 meV. Corresponding Schwinger multichannel method with pseudo-potential calculations, for energies between 6-50 eV and with and without Born-closure, were also performed for a sub-set of the excited electronic-states that were accessed in the measurements. Those calculations were undertaken at the static exchange plus polarisation-level using a minimum orbital basis for single configuration interaction (MOB-SCI) approach. Agreement between the measured and calculated DCSs was qualitatively quite good, although to obtain quantitative accord, the theory would need to incorporate even more channels into the MOB-SCI. To support these findings, we present new experimental evidence of the predicted dissociation pathways on plasma treatment of biomass. An important question is how accurate must the experimental and/or the theoretical data be in order to indicate that plasma modelings can be really useful in understanding plasma applications? In this paper, we initiate a discussion on the role of data accuracy of experimental and theoretical electron-molecule scattering cross sections in plasma modeling. First we review technological motivations for carrying out electron-molecule scattering studies. Then we point out the theoretical and experimental limitations that prevent us from obtaining more accurate cross sections. We present a few examples involving biomass molecular fragments, to illustrate theoretical inaccuracies on: resonances positions and widths, electronic excitation, superelastic cross sections from metastable states and due to multichannel effects on the momentum transfer cross sections. On the experimental side we briefly describe challenges in making absolute cross sections measurements with biomass species and radicals. The calculations were performed with two different theoretical methodologies, the Schwinger multichannel method with pseudopotentials (SMCPP) and the independent atom method with screening corrected additivity rule (IAM-SCAR) that now incorporates a further interference (I) term. The SMCPP with N energetically open electronic states (N-open) at either the static-exchange (N-open ch-SE) or the static-exchange-plus-polarisation (N-open ch-SEP) approximation was employed to calculate the scattering amplitudes at impact energies lying between 5 eV and 50 eV, using a channel coupling scheme that ranges from the 1ch-SEP up to the 63ch-SE level of approximation depending on the energy considered. For elastic scattering, we found very good overall agreement at higher energies among our SMCPP cross sections, our IAM-SCAR+I cross sections and the experimental data for furan (a molecule that differs from furfural only by the substitution of a hydrogen atom in furan with an aldehyde functional group). This is a good indication that our elastic cross sections are converged with respect to the multichannel coupling effect for most of the investigated intermediate energies. However, although the present application represents the most sophisticated calculation performed with the SMCPP method thus far, the inelastic cross sections, even for the low lying energy states, are still not completely converged for intermediate and higher energies. The experimental data were obtained with an apparatus based in Madrid and the calculated cross sections with two different methodologies, the independent atom method with screening corrected additivity rule (IAM-SCAR), and the Schwinger multichannel method with pseudopotentials (SMCPP). The SMCPP method in the Nopen-channel coupling scheme, at the static-exchange-plus-polarization approximation, is employed to calculate the scattering amplitudes at impact energies ranging from 5.0 eV to 50 eV. We discuss the multichannel coupling effects in the calculated cross sections, in particular how the number of excited states included in the open-channel space impacts upon the convergence of the elastic cross sections at higher collision energies. The IAM-SCAR approach was also used to obtain the elastic differential cross sections (DCSs) and for correcting the experimental total cross sections for the so-called forward angle scattering effect. We found a very good agreement between our SMCPP theoretical differential, integral, and momentum transfer cross sections and experimental data for benzene (a molecule differing from phenol by replacing a hydrogen atom in benzene with a hydroxyl group). Although some discrepancies were found for lower energies, the agreement between the SMCPP data and the DCSs obtained with the IAM-SCAR method improves, as expected, as the impact energy increases. We also have a good agreement among the present SMCPP calculated total cross section (which includes elastic, 32 inelastic electronic excitation processes and ionization contributions, the latter estimated with the binary-encounter-Bethe model), the IAM-SCAR total cross section, and the experimental data when the latter is corrected for the forward angle scattering effect [Fuss et al., Phys. Our results indicate that BF3 has a shape resonance in the B (2) symmetry located at around 3.5 eV, in agreement with the experimental measurements of 3.8 eV, 3.54 eV and of 3.6 eV reported by [M. Tronc et al., J. Phys. B 15, L253 (1982)], by [J.A. Tossell et al., Int. J. Quantum Chem. 29, 1117 (1986)] and by [C. Szmytkowski et al., J. Chem. Phys. 121, 1790 (2004)] respectively. We also report a Ramsauer-Townsend minimum at around 0.7 eV, in conformity with the observations of [S.R. Hunter et al., J. Appl. Phys. 65, 1858 (1989); Z. NikitoviA double dagger et al., Acta Phys. Polon. A 117, 748 (2010)], and [P.X. Hien et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn 82, 034301 (2013)]. Our elastic integral cross section is compared with calculated elastic cross sections of [J.A. Tossell et al., Int. J. Quantum Chem. 29, 1117 (1986)] and of [M. RadmiloviA double dagger-RadjenoviA double dagger et al., Publ. Astron. Obs. The present calculations were performed at CENAPAD/SP, IFGW/UNICAMP, LFTC-DFis/UFPR, LCPAD/UFPR and CTBE/CNPEM Abstract: We report elastic integral (ICS), differential (DCS) and momentum transfer cross sections (MTCS) for low-energy electron scattering by n-pentanol alcohol in the gas phase. The Schwinger multichannel method implemented with pseudopotentials was employed in the calculations. The DCSs were computed for energies from 1 to 50 eV and the ICS and MTCS from 1 to 100 eV. Due to the significant value of the electric dipole moment, the DCSs are dominated by strong forward scattering. Despite this fact, the DCS around 10 eV displays a behavior related to a f-wave scattering pattern at intermediate angles which may be associated with shape resonances. This result is consistent with the ICS and the MTCS since they show a pronounced peak near this energy. For energies below 1 eV, the MTCS obtained in the static-exchange plus polarization approximation does not increase, as expected for polar molecules, suggesting that a Ramsauer-Townsend minimum could be present. This finding motivated us to revisit the previously studied methanol, ethanol, n-propanol and n-butanol molecules and to perform new calculations for impact energies below 1 eV (not addressed before). With the inclusion of polarization effects, the MTCS for the five alcohols suggest a Ramsauer-Townsend minimum coming from the negative to the positive scattering energies. EELS for 250 eV incident electron energy over a range of angles between 3 degrees and 50 degrees have also been measured at a moderate energy resolution (similar to 0.9 eV). The latter spectra were used to derive differential cross sections and generalised oscillator strengths (GOS) for the dipole-allowed electronic transitions, through normalization to data for elastic electron scattering from benzene. Theoretical calculations were performed using time-dependent density functional theory and single-excitation configuration interaction methods. These calculations were used to assign the experimentally measured spectra. Calculated optical oscillator strengths were also compared to those derived from the GOS data. The present calculations were performed at CENAPAD/SP, IFGW/UNICAMP and CTBE/CNPEM Abstract: We report elastic integral, differential and momentum transfer cross sections for low-energy electron scattering by the cellulose components beta-D-glucose and cellobiose (beta(1 -> 4) linked glucose dimer), and the hemicellulose component beta-D-xylose. For comparison with the b forms, we also obtain results for the amylose subunits alpha-D-glucose and maltose (alpha(1 -> 4) linked glucose dimer). The integral cross sections show double peaked broad structures between 8 eV and 20 eV similar to previously reported results for tetrahydrofuran and 2-deoxyribose, suggesting a general feature of molecules containing furanose and pyranose rings. These broad structures would reflect OH, CO and/or CC sigma* resonances, where inspection of low-lying virtual orbitals suggests significant contribution from sigma(OH)* anion states. Though we do not examine dissociation pathways, these anion states could play a role in dissociative electron attachment mechanisms, in case they were coupled to the long-lived pi* anions found in lignin subunits [de Oliveira et al., Phys. Rev. A, 2012, 86, 020701(R)]. The experimental TCSs were obtained with a linear transmission technique, for energies from 0.1 up to 50 eV. The present TCS data agree well with those previously reported (Kimura et al 2001 J. Chem. Phys. 115 7442) at higher energies (above 7 eV), but significant discrepancies are found at the lower energies. The present ICS computations were performed with the Schwinger multichannel method (SMC) and the Born dipole approximation in the incident energy range from 0.1 eV up to 10 eV. Iodomethane poses a great challenge to theoretical descriptions of the collisions dynamics. In addition to the neglect of inelastic channels, the main difficulty found in the SMC approach is related to numerical limitations that prevent a thorough description of correlation-polarization effects. Total cross sections (TCSs) have been measured at incident energies between 0.1 and 70 eV with a linear-transmission-based positron spectrometer. Elastic differential and integral cross sections, as well as inelastic integral cross sections and TCSs, have been computed with two different theoretical approaches: the independent atom model with screening-corrected additivity rule (IAM-SCAR), at energies in the 1- to 1000-eV range, and the Schwinger multichannel method at energies between 0.1 and 10 eV. Note that the latter method specifically reports cross sections for the elastic channel. We find good qualitative agreement between the theories and the TCS experiment at all common energies. That level of accord is found to also become quantitative above the ionization energy of nitrous oxide. Experimental differential cross sections were measured at incident electron energies between 5 and 15 eV and for scattering angles from 10 degrees to 130 degrees. The calculated cross sections were obtained using the Schwinger multichannel method implemented with pseudopotentials. The influence of channel-coupling and polarization effects is investigated through the comparison between three different models of scattering calculations, each one considering a distinct channel-coupling scheme. The comparison of experimental and calculated cross sections for electronically inelastic electron scattering by C4H4O molecules is found to be mostly reasonable. The energy range of these measurements was 0.1-50 eV, whereas the energy resolution was similar to 100 meV when our Ni moderator was used and similar to 260 meV when the W moderator was employed. The experimental total cross sections (TCSs) were obtained with a linear transmission technique, for energies from 0.1 eV up to 70 eV. The calculations employed the Schwinger multichannel method and were performed in the static plus polarization approximation for energies up to 10 eV. Our calculated elastic cross sections indicate a Ramsauer-Townsend minimum around 2.8 eV and a virtual state, in agreement with previous calculations by da Silva et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 1028 (1996)]. We found reasonable agreement between the calculated elastic integral cross section and the measured total cross section below the positronium formation threshold. We present a theoretical investigation on positron scattering by N2O. Elastic differential and integral cross sections at both the static and static plus correlation-polarization levels of approximation are calculated and reported in the 0.1-100 eV. Calculations were performed using two theoretical methods, namely, the Schwinger multichannel method and the method of continued fractions. Also, two different schemes were used to treat correlation-polarization effects. The Schwinger multichannel method is applied to study the low-energy electron-impact excitation of molecular nitrogen. The scattering amplitudes are obtained within the minimal orbital basis for single configuration interactions (MOBSCI) level of approximation, for impact energies from near threshold up to 30 eV. Through the use of the MOBSCI strategy we have performed a close-coupling calculation for up to nine states, including the ground state and all singlet and triplet states resulting from the pi(u)->pi(g) transitions. The calculations presented here were partly performed at Centro Nacional de Processamento de Alto Desempenho (CENAPAD-SP) Abstract: We report vibrational excitation (nu(i)=0 ->nu(f)=1) and total cross sections for positron scattering by H-2. The Feshbach projection operator formalism was employed to vibrationally resolve the fixed-nuclei phase shifts obtained with the Schwinger multichannel method. The near-threshold behavior of the vibrational excitation cross section is in good agreement with available experimental data [Sullivan , Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 1494 (2001)]. Though our fixed-nuclei calculations do not indicate the existence of a e(+)-H-2 virtual state, a proper description of the T matrix threshold behavior is essential (the adiabatic approximation is inadequate). These calculations were made at CENAPAD-SP and a DF-UFPR Abstract: 1,1-difluoroethylene (1,1-C2H2F2) molecules have been studied for the first time experimentally and theoretically by electron and positron impact. 0.4-1000 eV electron and 0.2-1000 eV positron impact total cross sections (TCSs) were measured using a retarding potential time-of-flight apparatus. In order to probe the resonances observed in the electron TCSs, a crossed-beam method was used to investigate vibrational excitation cross sections over the energy range of 1.3-49 eV and scattering angles 90 degrees and 120 degrees for the two loss energies 0.115 and 0.381 eV corresponding to the dominant C-H (nu(2) and nu(9)) stretching and the combined C-F (nu(3)) stretching and CH2 (nu(11)) rocking vibrations, respectively. Electron impact elastic integral cross sections are also reported for calculations carried out using the Schwinger multichannel method with pseudopotentials for the energy range from 0.5 to 50 eV in the static-exchange approximation and from 0.5 to 20 eV in the static-exchange plus polarization approximation. Resonance peaks observed centered at about 2.3, 6.5, and 16 eV in the TCSs have been shown to be mainly due to the vibrational and elastic channels, and assigned to the B-2, B-1, and A(1) symmetries, respectively. The pi* resonance peak at 1.8 eV in C2H4 is observed shifted to 2.3 eV in 1,1-C2H2F2 and to 2.5 eV in C2F4; a phenomenon attributed to the decreasing C=C bond length from C2H4 to C2F4. We investigate the influence of polarization on the isomer effect comparing the cross sections of these isomers and concluded that polarization has a small influence in that effect. Total ionization cross sections by electron impact are computed using the binary-encounter-Bethe (BEB) model and the results compared with available experimental data.
