The accurate prediction of heavy precipitation in convective environments is crucial because such events, often occurring in Italy during the summer and fall seasons, can be a threat for people and properties. In this paper, we analyse the impact of satellite-derived surface-rainfall-rate data assimilation on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model's precipitation prediction, considering 15 days in summer 2022 and 17 days in fall 2022, where moderate to intense precipitation was observed over Italy. A 3DVar realised at CNR-ISAC (National Research Council of Italy, Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate) is used to assimilate two different satellite-derived rain rate products, both exploiting geostationary (GEO), infrared (IR), and low-Earth-orbit (LEO) microwave (MW) measurements: One is based on an artificial neural network (NN), and the other one is the operational P-IN-SEVIRI-PMW product (H60), delivered in near-real time by the EUMETSAT HSAF (Satellite Application Facility in Support of Operational Hydrology and Water Management). The forecast is verified in two periods: the hours from 1 to 4 (1–4 h phase) and the hours from 3 to 6 (3–6 h phase) after the assimilation. The results show that the rain rate assimilation improves the precipitation forecast in both seasons and for both forecast phases, even if the improvement in the 3–6 h phase is found mainly in summer. The assimilation of H60 produces a high number of false alarms, which has a negative impact on the forecast, especially for intense events (30 mm/3 h). Precision Agriculture (PA) has revolutionized crop management by leveraging information technology, satellite positioning data, and remote sensing. One crucial component in PA applications is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which offers valuable insights into crop vigor and health. However, discontinuity of optical satellite acquisitions related to cloud cover and the huge load of the required processing time pose challenges to real-time applications. NDVI prediction emerges as an innovative solution to address these limitations. It allows for proactive decision-making by providing accurate estimates, enabling farmers and land managers to plan essential agronomic activities such as irrigation, fertilization, and pest control, based on anticipated future conditions. This study introduces an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model incorporating NDVI, Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), temperatures, and precipitation as predictive variables. The model employs a novel time series slicing algorithm, Boosting Adaptive Time Series Slicer (BATS), to enhance the input training dataset's variability, presenting the model with a broader range of examples. A 2-Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) forecasting model was developed to predict future NDVI values over short and medium-term horizons. The study area used to train, test and validate the ANN corresponds to a diverse landscape of cultivated corn fields located in Piemonte (NW-Italy). Results showed that NDVI future estimates were accurate; considering three time horizons for predictions (5, 10, and 15 days) RMSE values resulted to be 0.028, 0.038 and 0.050, respectively. Additionally, ablation tests proved that the most important variable for enhancing the model's accuracy is the NDWI, and the most useful timesteps are the four most recent ones. To preliminary investigate the capability of the ANN to operate over a wider and different area it was applied over the entire Europe, using the LUCAS dataset as reference map to locate corn fields. Results show RMSE of 0.062, 0.083 and 0.105 for the 5, 10 and 15 days forecasting horizons, respectively. The methodology proposed in this paper can be a possible alternative to more ordinary approaches for NDVI forecasting that nowadays appears to be a fundamental step for a proactive precision agriculture where crop management can be significantly improved. This paper presents a novel approach to estimating short-term production of wind farms, which are made up of numerous turbine generators. It harnesses the power of big data through a blend of data-driven and model-based methods. Specifically, it combines an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for immediate future predictions of wind turbine power output with a stochastic model for dependability, using Hybrid Reliability Block Diagrams. A thorough state-of-the-art review has been conducted in order to demonstrate the applicability of an ANN for non-linear stochastic problems of energy or power forecast estimation. The study leverages an innovative cluster analysis to group wind turbines and reduce the computational effort of the ANN, with a dependability model that improves the accuracy of the data-driven output estimation. Therefore, the main novelty is the employment of a hybrid model that combines an ANN with a dependability stochastic model that accounts for the realistic operational scenarios of wind turbines, including their susceptibility to random shutdowns This approach marks a significant advancement in the field, introducing a methodology which can aid the design and the power production forecast. The research has been applied to a case study of a 24 MW wind farm located in the south of Italy, characterized by 28 turbines. The findings demonstrate that the integrated model significantly enhances short-term wind-energy production estimation, achieving a 480% improvement in accuracy over the solo-clustering approach. • SeSAME system for collecting and analysing the behaviours of visitors inside a museum environment. • SeSAME is based on a multi-modal deep neural network architecture. • SeSAME uses re-identification techniques to perform visual profiling of visitor interest. • SeSAME aims at developing a tailored user experience in museum environment. Nowadays, understanding and analysing visitors activities and behaviours is becoming imperative for personalising and improving the user experience in a museum environment. Users' behaviour can provide important statistics, insights and objective information about their interactions, such as attraction, attention and action. These data represent a precious value for the museum curators, and they are one of the parameters that need to be assessed. These information are collected through manual approaches based on questionnaires or visual observations. This procedure is time consuming and can be affected by the subjective interpretation of the evaluator. From such premises, SeSAME (Senseable Self Adapting Museum Environment) a novel system for collecting and analysing the behaviours of visitors inside a museum environment is presented in this paper. SeSAME is based on a multi-modal deep neural network architecture able to extract anthropometric and appearance features from RGB-D videos acquired in crowded environments. Our approach has been tested on four different temporal modelling methods to aggregate a sequence of image-level features into clip-level features. This paper uses as a benchmark TVPR2, a public dataset of acquired videos with an RGB-D camera in a top-view configuration, in the presence of persistent and temporarily heavy occlusion. Moreover, a dataset specifically collected for this work has been acquired in a real museum environment, which is Palazzo Buonaccorsi, an important historical building in Macerata, in Marche Region in the center of Italy. Nowadays, Artificial intelligence (AI), combined with the digitalization of healthcare, can lead to substantial improvements in Patient Care, Disease Management, Hospital Administration, and supply chain effectiveness. Among predictive analytics tools, time series forecasting represents a central task to support healthcare management in terms of bookings and medical services predictions. In this context, the development of flexible frameworks to provide robust and reliable predictions became a central point in this healthcare innovation process. This paper presents and discusses a multi-source time series fusion and forecasting framework relying on Deep Learning. By combining weather, air-quality and medical bookings time series through a feature compression stage which preserves temporal patterns, the prediction is provided through a flexible ensemble technique based on machine learning models and a hybrid neural network. The proposed system is able to predict the number of bookings related to a specific medical examination for a 7-days horizon period. School buildings in Italy are outdated, in critical maintenance conditions and they often perform below acceptable service levels and quality standards. Nevertheless, data supporting renovation policies are missing or very expensive to be obtained. The paper presents a method for evaluating building's energy savings potential, using the Building Energy Certification (Certificazione Energetica degli Edifici - CENED) open database. The aim of the research concerns the development of a data-driven set of methods, based on the use of open data, machine learning (ML) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support regional energy retrofit policies on school buildings. The main advantage concerns the possibility to predict the post-retrofit energy savings, avoiding the expensive on-site Condition Assessment (CA) phase. Data have been first clustered to identify the most common thermo-physical properties of the envelope, then three retrofit scenarios have been defined, to allow the retrofit of homogeneous types of buildings. The energy saving potentials have been evaluated through the implementation of eight Artificial Neural Networks. Ultimately, data have been geolocated and further processed to support the definition of the energy retrofit policies for the most critical regional areas. The Lombardy region has been chosen as case study to test the robustness of the proposed methods. The results of the case study proved that school buildings energy retrofit policies can be supported and defined using available open data, ML and GIS. This paper presents the results obtained by the elaboration of an artificial neuronal network for the creation of a rockfall susceptibility map. The analysis was carried out by analysing the predisposing and triggering factors of the rockfall phenomenon. The parameters considered for this study and representing the input data of the artificial neural network are factors such as: gradient, soil use, lithology, rockfall source areas and kinetic energy values obtained by considering the probable pathways of the blocks through simulations with dedicated softwares, DEMs and niches of the rockfalls that have already occurred in the past. The processing of this data (required in a versatile dedicated software for the realization of the artificial neural network in ASCII format) is done using GIS softwares, useful tools for the creation of hazard maps. An important step is the realization of the rockfall inventory map: it allows to identify the training set (consisting of 50% of the pixels relative to the rockfall niches) for the network training and the testing set (considering the remaining 50% of the pixels relative to the rockfall niches) to assess the network accuracy by overlaying the rockfall niches belonging to the testing set with the obtained susceptibility map. Abstract: Wind energy evaluation is an important goal in the conversion of energy systems to more environmentally friendly solutions. In this paper, we present a novel approach to wind speed spatial estimation on the isle of Sicily (Italy): an incremental self-organizing neural network (Generalized Mapping Regressor – GMR) is coupled with exploratory data analysis techniques in order to obtain a map of the spatial distribution of the average wind speed over the entire region. First, the topographic surface of the island was modelled using two different neural techniques and by exploiting the information extracted from a digital elevation model of the region. Then, GMR was used for automatic modelling of the terrain roughness. Afterwards, a statistical analysis of the wind data allowed for the estimation of the parameters of the Weibull wind probability distribution function. This paper focuses on whether the on-going dramatic decrease in alcohol consumption in Italy, especially of wine, during 1961-2008, was associated with which parallel sociodemographic and economic changes and with alcohol control policies. The study, using both time series (TS) and artificial neural network (ANN)-based analyses documents that its selected sociodemographic and economic factors, and particularly urbanization, had a definite connection with wine consumption decrease, spirits decrease, and the increase in beer consumption over time. On the other hand, control policies showed no effect on the decline in alcohol consumption, since no alcohol control policy existed in Italy between 1960 and 1987. A few policies introduced since 1988 (BAC and sale restrictions during mass events) may have contributed to reducing or to maintaining the on-going reduction. Abstract: Windows are the weakest part of a façade in terms of acoustic performance: the weighted sound insulation index (R w), measured according to ISO 140-3, is the fundamental parameter to evaluate the façade acoustic insulation. The paper aims at developing an artificial neural network (ANN) model to estimate the R w value of wooden windows based on a limited number of windows parameters; this is a new approach because acoustic phenomena are non-linear and affected by a plurality of factors and, therefore, usually investigated through experimentation. Data set is taken from experimental campaigns carried out at the Laboratory of Acoustics, University of Perugia. A multilayer feed-forward approach was chosen and the model was implemented in MATLAB. On the basis of the results obtained by means of a preliminary training and test campaign of several ANN architectures, five main parameters were selected as network inputs: window typology, frame and shutters thickness, number of gaskets, R w of glazing; R w value of the window is the network output. Different ANN configurations were trained and a root mean-square error less than 3% was obtained, comparable to measurement uncertainty. This approach allows to develop a model which, with input parameters varying within appropriate ranges, can easily estimate the acoustic performance of wooden windows without experimental campaign on prototypes, saving both money and time. Abstract: Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been successfully employed for predicting and forecasting groundwater levels up to some time steps ahead. In this paper, we present an application of feed forward neural networks (FFNs) for long period simulations of hourly groundwater levels in a coastal unconfined aquifer sited in the Lagoon of Venice, Italy. After initialising the model with groundwater elevations observed at a given time, the developed FNN should able to reproduce water level variations using only the external input variables, which have been identified as rainfall and evapotranspiration. To achieve this purpose, the models are first calibrated on a training dataset to perform 1-h ahead predictions of future groundwater levels using past observed groundwater levels and external inputs. Simulations are then produced on another data set by iteratively feeding back the predicted groundwater levels, along with real external data. The results show that the developed FNN can accurately reproduce groundwater depths of the shallow aquifer for several months. The study suggests that such network can be used as a viable alternative to physical-based models to simulate the responses of the aquifer under plausible future scenarios or to reconstruct long periods of missing observations provided past data for the influencing variables is available. Abstract: This paper is concerned with the problem of developing a general class of stochastic models for hourly average wind speed time series. The proposed approach has been applied to the time series recorded during 4years in two sites of Sicily, a region of Italy, and it has attained valuable results in terms both of modelling and forecasting. Moreover, the 24h predictions obtained employing only 1-month time series are quite similar to those provided by a feed-forward artificial neural network trained on 2years data. Abstract: Growing of PV for electricity generation is one of the highest in the field of the renewable energies and this tendency is expected to continue in the next years. Due to the various seasonal, hourly and daily changes in climate, it is relatively difficult to find a suitable analytic model for predicting the performance of a grid-connected photovoltaic (GCPV) plant. In this paper, an artificial neural network is used for modelling and predicting the power produced by a 20kWp GCPV plant installed on the roof top of the municipality of Trieste (latitude 45°40′N, longitude 13°46′E), Italy. An experimental database of climate (irradiance and air temperature) and electrical (power delivered to the grid) data from January 29th to May 25th 2009 has been used. Two ANN models have been developed and implemented on experimental climate and electrical data. The first one is a multivariate model based on the solar irradiance and the air temperature, while the second one is an univariate model which uses as input parameter only the solar irradiance. A database of 3437 patterns has been divided into two sets: the first (2989 patterns) is used for training the different ANN models, while the second (459 patterns) is used for testing and validating the proposed ANN models. Prediction performance measures such as correlation coefficient (r) and mean bias error (MBE) are presented. The results show that good effectiveness is obtained between the measured and predicted power produced by the 20kWp GCPV plant. Abstract: The paper examines the effects of coordinated traffic lights on CO and C6H6 roadside concentrations in an urban area of Palermo in Southern Italy. Traffic loop detectors and one pollution-monitoring are used to collect data for use in DRACULA traffic microsimulator software. CO and C6H6 roadside concentrations associated with varying cycle and offset times of the coordinated traffic lights are estimated using a neural network. Abstract: Geomorphological analysis is an essential element of many landslide monitoring and hazard assessment studies. Remote sensing techniques have long been an effective tool for such analyses. This paper presents results regarding a geomorphological investigation performed exploiting information derived from high resolution hyper-spectral airborne sensor MIVIS (Multi-spectral Infrared and Visible Imaging Spectrometer) images. The authors propose a workflow based on neural network algorithms used both for image geometric correction and classification. The case study area is the Middle Susa Valley (Italian Western-Alps). It includes the Cassas landslide, a well-known complex landslide affecting slopes on the southern side of the valley, near the town of Salbertrand. At this location several “lifelines” (railway, main roads, hydroelectric tunnels, etc.) are concentrated, and they suffer from a constant threat of landslide activity. Traditional geomorphological characterization of the landslide slope was improved by comparing field campaigns with further information extracted from remote-sensed datasets. Presented results include the identification and characterization of major elements of the present-day active unstable slope (debris-covered areas, fractured/disjointed rock walls, landslide accumulation borders), as well as of individual structural features and landforms (major faults and fractures, trenches, elongated depressions, counterslope scarps), related to long-term deep-seated gravitational slope deformation. The small hyperspectral imager Compact High- Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) is the most important instrument for Earth observation included in the payload of the European Space Agency Third-Part Mission Project for On-Board Autonomy (PROBA)-1 satellite. This instrument has provided dozens of images in several target areas in the world, and a good number of acquisitions are available for the test site of Frascati and Tor Vergata, Italy. This paper reports several results concerning the generation of thematic maps obtained from CHRIS mode-3 imagery. The potential of the use of different configurations for the input vector exploiting multispectral, multiangular, and multitemporal measurements has been investigated, and the results have been evaluated and compared in terms of accuracy in the classification. The core of the decision task has been developed using the neural network methodology. This paper describes a novel methodology where Machine Learning Algorithms (MLAs) have been integrated to assess the landslide risk for slow moving mass movements, processes whose intermittent activity makes challenging any risk analysis worldwide. MLAs has been trained on datasets including Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and additional remote sensing datasets such as aerial stereo photographs and LiDAR and tested in the Termini-Nerano landslides system (southern Apennines, Italy). The availability of such a wealth of materials allows also an unprecedented spatio-temporal reconstruction of the volume and the kinematic of the landslides system through which we could generate and validate the hazard map. Our analysis identifies fifteen slow-moving phenomena, traceable since 1955, whose total area amounts to 4.1 × 105 m2 and volume to ~1.4 × 106 m3. InSAR results prove that seven out of the fifteen slow-moving landslides are currently active and characterized by seasonal velocity patterns. These new insights on the dynamic of the landslides system have been selected as the main independent variables to train three MLAs (Artificial Neural Network, Generalized Boosting Model and Maximum Entropy) and derive the landslide hazard for the area. Finally, official population and buildings census data have been used to assess the landslide risk whose highest values are located in the crown area, south of Termini village, and nearby Nerano. This new methodology provides a different landslide risk scenario compared to the existing official documents for the study area and overall new insights on how to develop landslide risk management strategies worldwide based on a better understanding of slope processes thanks to the latest satellite technologies available. Artificial neural networks are functional alternative techniques in modelling the intricate vehicular exhaust emission dispersion phenomenon. Pollutant predictions are notoriously complex when using either deterministic or stochastic models, which explains why this model was developed using a neural network. Neural networks have the ability to learn about non-linear relationships between the used variables. In this paper a recurrent neural network (Elman model) based forecaster for the prediction of daily maximum concentrations of SO2, O3, PM10, NO2, CO in the city of Palermo is proposed. The effectiveness of the presented forecaster was tested using a time series recorded between 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2004 in eight monitoring stations in urban area of Palermo (Italy). Experimental trials show that the developed and tuned model is appropriate, giving small values of root mean square error (RMSE) , mean absolute error (MAE) and mean square error (MSE). In addition, the related correlation coefficient ranges from 0. 72 to 0. 97 for each forecasted pollutant, underlying a small difference between the forecasted and the measured values. The paper illustrates a combined approach based on unsupervised and supervised neural networks for the electric energy demand forecasting of a suburban area with a prediction time of 24 h. A preventive classification of the historical load data is performed during the unsupervised stage by means of a Kohonen''s self organizing map (SOM). The actual forecast is obtained using a two layered feed forward neural network, trained with the back propagation with momentum learning algorithm. In order to investigate the influence of climate variability on the electricity consumption, the neural network is trained using weather data (temperature, relative humidity, global solar radiation) along with historical load data available for a part of the electric grid of the town of Palermo (Italy) from 2001 to 2003. The model validation is performed by comparing model predictions with load data that were not used for the network''s training. The results obtained bear out the suitability of the adopted methodology for the short term load forecasting (STLF) problem also at so small a spatial scale as the suburban one. Wind energy has shown significant growth in terms of installed power in the last decade. However, one of the most critical problems for a wind farm is represented by Operation and Maintenance (O&M) costs, which can represent 20–30% of the total costs related to power generation. Various monitoring methodologies targeted to the identification of faults, such as vibration analysis or analysis of oils, are often used. However, they have the main disadvantage of involving additional costs as they usually entail the installation of other sensors to provide real-time control of the system. In this paper, we propose a methodology based on machine learning techniques using data from SCADA systems (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). Since these systems are generally already implemented on most wind turbines, they provide a large amount of data without requiring extra sensors. In particular, we developed models using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to characterize the behavior of some of the main components of the wind turbine, such as gearbox and generator, and predict operating anomalies. The proposed method is tested on real wind turbines in Italy to verify its effectiveness and applicability, and it was demonstrated to be able to provide significant help for the maintenance of a wind farm. At the beginning of 2020, the spread of a new strand of Coronavirus named SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) raised the interest of the scientific community about the risk assessment related to the viral infection. The contagion became pandemic in few months forcing many Countries to declare lockdown status. In this context of quarantine, all commercial and productive activities are suspended, and many Countries are experiencing a serious crisis. To this aim, the understanding of risk of contagion in every urban district is fundamental for governments and administrations to establish reopening strategies. This paper proposes the calibration of an index able to predict the risk of contagion in urban districts in order to support the administrations in identifying the best strategies to reduce or restart the local activities during lockdown conditions. The objective regards the achievement of a useful tool to predict the risk of contagion by considering socio-economic data such as the presence of activities, companies, institutions and number of infections in urban districts. The proposed index is based on a factorial formula, simple and easy to be applied by practitioners, calibrated by using an optimization-based procedure and exploiting data of 257 urban districts of Apulian region (Italy). Moreover, a comparison with a more refined analysis, based on the training of Artificial Neural Networks , is performed in order to take into account the non-linearity of the phenomenon. Lack of accurate and up-to-date data associated with irrigated areas and related irrigation amounts is hampering the full implementation and compliance of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). In this paper, we describe the framework that we developed and implemented within the DIANA project to map the actual extent of irrigated areas in the Campania region (Southern Italy) during the 2018 irrigation season. For this purpose, we considered 202 images from the Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) products (57 images from Landsat 8 and 145 images from Sentinel-2). Such data were preprocessed in order to extract a multitemporal Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) map, which was then smoothed through a gap-filling algorithm. We further integrated data coming from high-resolution (4 km) global satellite precipitation Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN)-Cloud Classification System (CCS) products. We collected an extensive ground truth in the field represented by 2992 data points coming from three main thematic classes: bare soil and rainfed (class 0), herbaceous (class 1), and tree crop (class 2). This information was exploited to generate irrigated area maps by adopting a machine learning classification approach. We compared six different types of classifiers through a cross-validation approach and found that, in general, random forests, support vector machines, and boosted decision trees exhibited the best performances in terms of classification accuracy and robustness to different tested scenarios. We found an overall accuracy close to 90% in discriminating among the three thematic classes, which highlighted promising capabilities in the detection of irrigated areas from HLS products. In this century, one of the main objectives of agriculture is sustainability addressed to achieve food security, based on the improvement of use efficiency of farm resources, the increasing of crop yield and quality, under climate change conditions. The optimization of farm resources, as well as the control of soil degradation processes (e.g., soil erosion), can be realized through crop monitoring in the field, aiming to manage the local spatial variability (time and space) with a high resolution. In the case of high profitability crops, as the case of vineyards for high-quality wines, the capability to manage and follow spatial behavior of plants during the season represents an opportunity to improve farmer incomes and preserve the environmental health. However, any field monitoring represents an additional cost for the farmer, which slows down the objective of a diffuse sustainable agriculture. Satellite multispectral images have been widely used for production management in large areas. However, their observation is limited by the pre-defined and fixed scale with relatively coarse spatial resolution, resulting in limitations in their application. In this paper, encouraged by recent achievements in convolutional neural network (CNN), a multiscale full-connected CNN is constructed for the pan-sharpening of Sentinel-2A images by UAV images. The reconstructed data are validated by independent multispectral UAV images and in-situ spectral measurements. The reconstructed Sentinel-2A images provide a temporal evaluation of plant responses using selected vegetation indices. The proposed methodology has been tested on plant measurements taken either in-vivo and through the retrospective reconstruction of the eco-physiological vine behavior, by the evaluation of water conductivity and water use efficiency indexes from anatomical and isotopic traits recorded in vine trunk wood. In this study, the use of such a methodology able to combine the pro and cons of space-borne and UAVs data to evaluate plant responses, with high spatial and temporal resolution, has been applied in a vineyard of southern Italy by analyzing the period from 2015 to 2018. Background: After 2008 global economic crisis, Italian governments progressively reduced public healthcare financing. Describing the time trend of health outcomes and health expenditure may be helpful for policy makers during the resources' allocation decision making process. The aim of this paper is to analyze the trend of mortality and health spending in Italy and to investigate their correlation in consideration of the funding constraints experienced by the Italian national health system (SSN).Methods: We conducted a 20-year time-series study. Secondary data has been extracted from a national, institution based and publicly accessible retrospective database periodically released by the Italian Institute of Statistics. Age standardized all-cause mortality rate (MR) and health spending (Directly Provided Services - DPS, Agreed-Upon Services - TAUS, and private expenditure) were reviewed. Time trend analysis (1995-2014) through OLS and Multilayer Feed-forward Neural Networks (MFNN) models to forecast mortality and spending trend was performed. The association between healthcare expenditure and MR was analyzed through a fixed effect regression model. We then repeated MFNN time trend forecasting analyses on mortality by adding the spending item resulted significantly related with MR in the fixed effect analyses.Results: DPS and TAUS decreased since 2011. There was a mismatch in mortality rates between real and predicted values. DPS resulted significantly associated to mortality (p < 0.05). In repeated mortality forecasting analysis, predicted MR was found to be lower when considering the pre-constraints health spending trend.Conclusions: Between 2011 and 2014, Italian public health spending items showed a reduction when compared to prior years. Spending on services directly provided free of charge appears to be the financial driving force of the Italian public health system. The overall mortality was found to be higher than the predicted trend and this scenario may be partially attributable to the healthcare funding constraints experienced by the SSN. This paper deals with the experimental validation of an innovative system for the aircraft acoustic signature identification which has been developed by the vibration and acoustics laboratory of the Italian Aerospace Research Center. The system is composed of an algorithm for the acoustic signature identification and a dedicated neural network classifier, trained with a set of experimental aircraft noise data. The algorithm test and validation has been performed for different airplanes during takeoff and landing maneuvers. The experimental activity of ground noise measurements has been carried out at the Naples airport of Capodichino. More than 200 aircraft noise events of five aircraft types (Airbus A320, Boeing B737, McDonnel Douglas MD80, Fokker F100, Aerospatiale/Alenia ATR72), during both takeoff and landing maneuver, have been measured. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of developing a suitable artificial neural network to establish if a time signal, elaborated through a wavelet process, is or is not similar to others, having been recognized as originated from a defined type of aircraft. The artificial neural network was trained by the use of a subset of experimental data and then validated through a comparison with another subset of data from the same experimental campaign. The developed software demonstrated to give more than satisfactory results for each of the acquired spectra, with the maximum error always being under (10)%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
