Austria, Czechia, Greece (Samos), Serbia (Vujić et al., 2008; Vujić et al., 2013; Speight, 2020; Vujić & Milić, 2021; Wakkie, 2021); Ukraine (first record). This European localized endemic is regarded as endangered at the global and European level (Vujić & Milić, 2021). D i a g n o s i s. Species of the Pipiza luteitarsis group to which P. luteibarba belongs are characterized by lacking a pair of ventral longitudinal ridges at the distal end of hind femora (in other Palaearctic Pipiza species, distal end of hind femora ventrally with a pair of distinct, longitudinal ridges) and ventral part of the postpedicel reddish (in other Pipiza species, postpedicel dark). In the male genitalia, lower gonocercus of hypandrium is very short, about 1/3 length of theca (in other Pipiza species, hypandrium always has long lower gonocercus, in lateral view it is about 3/4 length of theca) (Vujić et al., 2008; Vujić et al., 2013). The other known European species of the Pipiza luteitarsus group are P. accola, P. luteitarsis, and P. quadrimaculata. The male of Pipiza luteibarba differs from P. quadrimaculata (Panzer, 1802) male by antennae inserted in upper half of the head (lateral view) (in P. quadrimaculata, antennae inserted just below middle of the head) and abdomen elongated (in P. quadrimaculata, abdomen broadly ovoid). From the most similar P. accola Violovitsh, 1985 and P. luteitarsis Zetterstedt, 1843, P. luteibarba can be distinguished by face with pale pile (figs 31–33) (in other species, face predominantly with black pile; however, we have some specimens of P. accola in which face predominantly with pale pile); postpedicel elongated, almost 1.5 times longer than wide (figs 32–33) (in other species, postpedicel short, oval, wider than long); tarsi yellow, only metatarsus of hind legs darkened (figs 29, 33) (in other species, tarsi of all legs partly darkened or at least of middle and hind legs); tergite 2 with long hairs that stick out (in other species, tergite 2 without long hairs sticking out); basal part of surstylus with well-developed semicircular lobe (in other species, basal part of surstylus with reduced (P. luteitarsis) or with small basal semicircular lobe, as in P. accola). Diagnosis. Cheilosia fraterna is most similar to C. bergenstammi (see above). The male of C. fraterna (figs 9–16) is also similar to C. sootryeni in having lower part of compound eye bare (figs 14–16) (in C. sootryeni, lower part of compound eye may be bare or with a single pile); from C. sootryeni it can be distinguished by: tergites with mostly pale pile (in C. sootryeni, tergites 2 and 3 with black short macrotrichia posteromedially); tibiae with yellow apexes occupying almost 1/3–1/4 length of tibia (fig. 10), at that hind tibia may be entirely yellow (in C. sootryeni, tibiae with yellow apexes occupying not more than 1/8–1/6 length of tibia); fore tarsus black dorsally (fig. 12) with at least tarsomeres 1+2 pale laterally, mid tarsus (fig. 13) with first tarsomere usually pale and tarsomeres 2–5 darkened dorsally (in C. sootryeni, all tarsi black dorsally). Genitalia of C. fraterna have been prepared and compared with figures in Stubbs & Falk (2002: Plate I, fig. 1, a–d). The female (figs 17–21) of C. fraterna is very similar to C. chloris (Meigen, 1822) and C. bracusi Vujić & Claussen, 1994. From C. chloris it can be separated by: arista black at the base (fig. 20) (in C. chloris, arista yellow at the base); compound eye with the lower part (almost half of the eye) bare (figs 20–21) (in C. chloris, eye with the small lowest part bare or with single pile)., Published as part of Prokhorov, A. Cheilosia (Cheilosia) pascuorum Becker, 1894 (figs 26–29) M a t e r i a l e x a m i n e d. Ukraine. Distribution: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, central European Russia, Serbia, the Slovak Republic, Sweden, Switzerland (Bańkowska, 1963; Peck, 1988; Dirickx, 1994; Vujić, 1996; Holinka & Mazánek, 1997; Wolff, 1998; Stănescu & Pârvu, 2005; Mielczarek, 2009 –2020; Vujić et al., 2013; Barkalov & Mutin, 2018; Speight et al., 2018; Speight, 2020; Wakkie, 2020); Ukraine (first record). Diagnosis. This species belongs to Cheilosia proxima group (Vujić et al., 2013) and is most similar to Cheilosia balkana Vujić, 1994 in having first flagellomere black to blackishbrown, margin of upper calypter with short pale pile, frons not swollen, abdomen (including pregenital segments) covered in pale macrotrichia (Vujić et al., 2001). The Cheilosia pascuorum male can be separated from the male of C. balkana by: tergite 3 dull medially (in C. balkana, tergite 3 shiny); vein M 1 meeting vein R 4+5 at right or obtuse angle (fig. 26) (in C. balkana, vein M 1 meeting vein R 4+5 at an acute angle); arista bare (fig. 29) (in C. balkana, arista with short microtrichia); dorsal lobe of gonostylus very broad basally (in C. balkana, dorsal lobe of gonostylus basally narrowed) (Vujić et al., 2001). From the similar species C. proxima (Zetterstedt, 1843) and C. gigantea (Zetterstedt, 1838), C. pascuorum can be separated by: abdomen entirely with pale macrotrichia (figs 26, 27) (in others, abdomen partly with black macrotrichia, at least pregenital segments with a few black macrotrichia). Additionally, from C. proxima it differs by its larger size, usually not smaller than 10 mm (C. proxima is smaller, usually 7–9 mm). Genitalia of these species are different by the shape of the dorsal lobe of the gonostylus (Vujić et al., 2001). The genitalia of C. pascuorum have been prepared and compared with figures in Vujić et al. (2001). Note. Epistrophe cryptica Doczkal and Schmid, 1994 (figs 47–52) M a t e r i a l e x a m i n e d. Ukraine. D i s t r i b u t i o n:uncertain, due to confusion with other related species until recently. Confirmed from Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland,? Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland; Russia (European part, Siberia, the Far East); Japan (Holinka & Mazánek, 1997; Nielsen, 1999; Mielczarek, 2009 –2020; Reemer et al., 2009; Tóth, 2011; Haarto & Kerppola, 2014; Barkalov & Mutin, 2018; Speight et al., 2018; Van Steenis et al., 2019; Speight, 2020; Wakkie, 2020); Ukraine (first record). Diagnosis.The Epistrophe cryptica female is most similar to the female of E. obscuripes (Strobl, 1910) (figs 53–58) in sharing the following characters: basal medial (bm) cell of wing entirely covered in microtrichia; mesoscutum mostly brightly shining, without distinct pruinescence dorsally; tergite 5 partly black; scutellum with only yellow macrotrichia or with just a few black macrotrichia along hind margin; frons entirely black (figs 51, 52, 57, 58); anterior side of hind tibia entirely or partly with yellow macrotrichia (figs 49, 55). Epistrophe cryptica can be distinguished from E. obscuripes by: arista yellow, at least in basal half (fig. 51) (in E. obscuripes, arista entirely black, as in fig. 57); anterior side of hind femur with black macrotrichia apically (fig. 48) (in E. obscuripes, anterior side of hind femur almost only with yellow macrotrichia, as in fig. 54); anterior side of hind tibia covered in a mixture of black and yellow macrotrichia (fig. 49) (in E. obscuripes, anterior side of hind tibia entirely covered in yellow macrotrichia, as in fig. 55). The species is also very similar in appearance to E. melanostoma (Zetterstedt, 1843), E. nitidicollis (Meigen, 1822) and E. olgae Mutin, 1990. From E. nitidicollis and E. olgae it differs by: wing entirely covered in microtrichia (in others, wing with basal medial (bm) cell 20% or more bare of microtrichia); scutellum with only yellow macrotrichia or with just a few black macrotrichia along hind margin (in others, at least one third of the scutellum with black macrotrichia); frons entirely black with gray pruinescence that do not look like separate maculae (figs 51, 52) (in others, frons with yellow anterior part and usually with two well developed yellowish-gray or golden-yellow maculae of pruinescens; in E. olgae, frons entirely with dense pruinescence except for the anterior part, and the maculae along the compound eye margin often merge almost into a continuous band). Additionally, E. cryptica differs from E. nitidicollis by the yellow arista, at least in basal half (fig. 51) (in E. nitidicollis, the arista is black, rarely it can be brownish or yellowish). Epistrophe cryptica is very similar to E. melanostoma in having: wing entirely covered in microtrichia; scutellum with only yellow macrotrichia or with just a few black macrotrichia along the hind margin; anterior surface of hind femur with black macrotrichia on apical third or more of its length (fig. 48). Criorhina pachymera can be distinguished from C. floccosa by the hairy katepimeron (in C. floccosa, katepimeron is bare). Body shape, color and markings of T. angustistriatum male are very similar to T.bombylans (Fabricius, 1805) (figs 51–54), but clearly can be distinguished from it by the hind tibia black anterolaterally at least third of the length of the tibia (fig. 48) (in T. bombylans, hind tibia without black mark anterolaterally, or with black mark occupying no more than one sixth of the length of the tibia, as on fig. 52) (Speight & Sarthou, 2017). Additionally, T. angustistriatum male can be distinguished from T. bombylans by: mid tibia yellow with blackish incomplete ring (mostly expressed on the posterior side) just below the middle of tibia not less than a third of the length of the tibia (fig. 49) (in T. bombylans, mid tibia entirely yellow, as on fig. 53), a third of the hind femur at the apex mostly with black macrotrichia (fig. 50) (in T. bombylans, a third of the hind femur at the apex mostly with pale macrotrichia, as on fig. 54). Female can be distinguished by the same characters as the male except mid tibia with less expressed dark ring. Sphiximorpha garibaldii Rondani, 1860 (figs 27–30, 35–38) M a t e r i a l e x a m i n e d. Ukraine. Bulgaria, France, Germany (extinct), Greece, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Turkey (Peck, 1988; Dirickx, 1994; Tóth, 2011; Williams et al., 2011; Saribiyik, 2014; Van Steenis et al., 2016; Ricarte & Marcos-García, 2017; Speight, 2018; Wakkie, 2019); Ukraine (first record). Diagnosis. Only four Sphiximorpha species are known from Europe, and S. garibaldii is most similar to S. subsessilis (Illiger in Rossi, 1807) (figs 31–34, 39–42) in having frons with lateral or medial black vittae (Van Steenis et al., 2016) (in S. euprosopa (Loew, 1869), frons entirely yellow). Sphiximorpha garibaldii differs from very rare sub-Mediterranean S. petronillae Rondani, 1850 by the scutellum yellow with black posterior margin (in S. petronillae Rondani, 1850, scutellum entirely yellow). Female of S. garibaldi can be separated from S. subsessilis female by: face with a lateral yellow marking in the shape of an inverted hook (usually as on fig. 30) (in S. subsessilis, face with a lateral yellow marking not hook-shaped, as on fig. 34), pedicel shorter (fig. 29), ratio of it length to the width is 1.78 (in S. subsessilis, pedicel longer (fig. 33), ratio of it length to the width is 2.0–2.2), hind femur slender (in S. subsessilis, hind femur ventrally near the apex with a small thickening). These characters were based on Van Steenis et al. (2016), except measurements made on our material. Additionally, S. garibaldi clearly differs from S. subsessilis by the slender tergite 2 (fig. 35): ratio of the length of tergite to its width is 1.77 (in S. subsessilis, tergite 2 more robust (fig. 39), ratio of the length of tergite to its width is 1.25–1.43), distance between yellow maculae on tergite 2 (fig. 35) less than width of the macula (dorsal view) (in S. subsessilis, distance between yellow maculae on tergite 2 more than width of the macula, as on fig. 39), frons with two small transverse yellow maculae separated from lateral maculae (fig. 29) (in S. subsessilis, these maculae are fused with lateral maculae, as on fig. 33), hind femur yellow at base about one sixth of its length (fig. 36) (in S. subsessilis, hind femur yellow at base of at least a third of its length, as on fig. 40), mid basitarsus ventrally with yellow setulae (fig. 37), hind basitarsus entirely pale, and hind tarsus dorsally with only pale macrotrichia (fig. 38) (in S. subsessilis, mid basitarsus ventrally with black setulae (fig. 41), hind basitarsus blackish dorsally, and hind tarsus dorsally with numerous black macrotrichia, as on fig. 42). Our specimen, unlike the description of the species (Van Steenis et al., 2016), with scutellum almost black and with only small orange maculae in anterior edge (fig. 35) (in S. subsessilis, scutellum with broad yellow fascia anteriorly, as on fig. 39). Probably some of the above additional characters may vary, for example the color of the pile on tarsus or the presence and shape of yellow maculae on frons, but our specimen clearly differs from S. subsessilis precisely on these characters. Note. Perhaps this is one of the most incredible new species for the fauna of Ukraine over the past few years because Ukrainian record is so far from the main range of this Southern European species. The specimen was found in a mixed forest with many old trees of Quercus robur, although the preferred environment of this species cited as “thermophilous deciduous forest of Quercus pubescens with overmature trees and Quercus suber forest with overmature trees” (Speight, 2018). Diagnosis. Both sexes of H. ferruginea clearly differ from H. ingrica (figs 5–8) by the longer body, 9.0– 13 mm (in H. ingrica, body length 5.5–8.0 mm), and plumose arista (fig. 3), with its branches> 2× as long as the maximum diameter of the arista (in H. ingrica, arista with shorter microtrichia (fig. 7), the longest branches slightly longer than the maximum diameter of the arista). Additionally, H. ferruginea can be separated from H. ingrica by: hind coxae covered with numerous short black setae (Mutin & Barkalov, 1999) as well as katepisternum with several (8–12) long black setae posteriorly (fig. 4) (in H. ingrica, katepisternum without black setae, and hind coxae mostly with 2–3 long black setae only in outer posterior corner laterally and the same amount at the posterior edge, as on fig. 8); female tergite 2 (fig. 2) usually with pale anterolateral part that do not look like separate maculae (in H. ingrica, female tergites 2 and often 3 with pale maculae that look like a separate maculae (fig. 6), especially on tergite 2). N o t e. The only representative of the genus in Ukraine. Xanthogramma laetum (Fabricius, 1794) (fig. 29) M a t e r i a l e x a m i n e d. Ukraine. Zakarpattia Region: Kamianytsia env., 48.70 N 22.43 E, Uzh River valley (left bank), 9– 10.05.2017, roads in deciduous forest, 4 ♀ (A. Prokhorov). Distribution: from northern Germany south to south-west France, and from Belgium eastwards through central and southern Europe (Germany, Poland, Italy, former Yugoslavia) to Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and central part of European Russia (Peck, 1988; Holinka & Mazánek, 1997; Tóth, 2011; Speight, 2017; Mielczarek, 2018); Ukraine (first record). Diagnosis. It easily differs from the other European species of the genus by the distinctly haired eyes, the hairs longer than the diameter of the anterior ocellus (in other species, the eye hairs very sparse, no hairs longer than the diameter of the anterior ocellus). Xanthogramma laetum is similar to X. marginale (Loew, 1854) only in having yellow transverse fasciae on tergite 3, but can be separated from it by the tergite 2 wider than long, tergite 4 with a transverse yellow fascia and the alula entirely covered by microtrichia (in X. marginale, tergite 2 longer than wide, tergite 4 with a pair of transverse yellow marks and the alula extensively bare) (Violovitsh, 1975; Speight & Sarthou, 2017). Norway, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, Great Britain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Northern Italy, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia (European territory, West and East Siberia, Far East) and Mongolia (Stackelberg, 1953; 1970; Peck, 1988; Holinka & Mazánek, 1997; Mutin & Barkalov, 1999; Tóth, 2011; Speight, 2017; Mielczarek, 2018), Ukraine (first record). Diagnosis. Female differs from Orthonevra erythrogona (Malm, 1863) by legs with tibiae pale at least for basal 1/3 (almost half in the specimen from Kyiv Region, as on FIg. 23), and the basoflagellomere about 3 times longer than wide (FIg. 24) (in O. erythrogona, tibiae black with only knees pale, and the basoflagellomere twice as long as wide). From similar Orthonevra elegans (Wiedemann in Meigen, 1822) O. geniculata differs by eyes without dark stripe, and the basoflagellomere about 3 times longer than wide (in O. elegans, eyes with dark stripe, and the basoflagellomere about 4 times longer than wide). From similar O. intermedia Lundbeck, 1916 and O. stackelbergi Thompson & Torp, 1982 O. geniculata differs by the crossvein r-m brown infuscate and two-colored pterostigma (yellowish with dark part at base) (FIg. 25), face on the level of the antennal sockets about 1.5–2 times as wide as width of an eye (FIg. 24) (in O. stackelbergi and O. geniculata, the crossvein r-m clear, pterostigma unicolorous, the width of the face on the level of the antennal sockets less than the width of an eye) (Stackelberg, 1953; Van Veen, 2010)., Published as part of Prokhorov, A. Thorax with short pale pile, black bristles on hind rim of scutellum present; upper and lower parts of hairs on katepisternum widely separated. Legs: femora black with small apical part pale, tibiae pale with narrow incomplete black rings below middle (fig. 7); tarsomeres 2–3 of all legs pale, 4–5 blackish, first tarsomeres of fore legs pale with dark patch on upper side, ones of mid legs pale; all claws black (fig. 10). Abdomen elongate and black, sternites 2–4 shining, tergites with short whitish pile.
