Camelobaetidius metae Salinas-Jimenez & Boldrini, sp. nov. (Figs. 1���11) Diagnosis. Nymphs: 1) labrum narrowly rounded anteriorly (Fig. 2); 2) incisors of right mandible with eleven denticles (Fig. 5a); 3) segment II of labial palp with a short rounded distomedial projection (Fig. 7); 4) gills absent at the bases of coxae; 5) outer margin of forefemur with a row of about 23 long, spine-like setae (Fig. 8); 6) tarsal claws with ten denticles (Fig. 8a); 7) posterior margin of tergum IV with truncate spines (Fig. 9); 8) terminal filament almost as long as cerci. Description. Nymph. Length of body: 3.5���4.0 mm; length of antennae: 1.0��� 1.2 mm; length of cerci: 1.0 mm; length of terminal filament: 0.8 mm. Head (Fig. 1). Light brown. Antennae light brown. Lateral branch of epicranial suture sinuous. Labrum (Fig. 2). Narrowly rounded anteriorly, broader than long. Length about 0.6�� maximum width; lateral and anterolateral margins with long, fine, bifid and pectinate setae; medially with fine, bifid and pectinate setae. Dorsally with three short, fine, simple setae scattered over basal area; dorsolateral arc of setae with two long, fine, apically pointed setae in lateral region. Hypopharynx (Fig. 3). Lingua shorter than superlingua, apex rounded, with tuft of short, fine, simple setae. Superlingua not expanded, with fine, simple setae scattered over lateral and distal margins. Left mandible (Fig. 4). Incisors with seven denticles (Fig. 4a). Prostheca robust, apically denticulate. Margin between prostheca and mola without setae; subtriangular process wide; setae absent from apex of mola. Right mandible (Fig. 5). Incisors with eleven denticles (Fig. 5a). Prostheca slender, apically denticulate; margin between prostheca and mola with two fine simple setae; setae present at apex of mola. Maxilla (Fig. 6). Inner dorsal row of setae with three denti-setae; two pectinate denti-setae and one apical dentiseta at same orientation of canines. Medial protuberance of galea with 2 long, fine and simple setae. Maxillary palp 1.1�� length of galea-lacinia. Palp segment II length subequal to length of segment I. Fine and simple setae scattered over segment II of maxillary palp. Labium (Fig. 7). Glossa shorter than paraglossa; inner margin with nine spine-like setae increasing in length distally; apex with two long, spine-like setae; outer margin with three long, spine-like setae; ventral surface with three short, fine, simple setae. Paraglossa sub-rectangular, curved inward; apex with two rows of long, fine, simple setae; ventral surface with row of four long, fine, spine-like setae; dorsal surface with two fine, spine-like setae near apex. Palp segment II with distomedial projection short and rounded; dorsally with row of three long, spine-like setae; ventrally with three simple spine-like setae. Palp segment III oblong, length 1.3�� width, with scattered simple setae and spine-like setae. Thorax ( Fig. 1). Light brown; metanotum with anterior region brown. Hind wing pad present. Gills absent from bases of coxae. Femur, tibia and tarsi light brown. Tibia I 0.9�� length of femur I; tibia II 0.8�� length of femur II; tibia III 0.8�� length of femur III. Tarsi I and II each 0.5�� length of respective femur; tarsi III 0.4�� length of femur III. Forefemur (Fig. 8) length about 3.4�� maximum width; outer margin with row of about 23 long, spine-like setae; inner margin with three short, fine, spine-like setae. Foretibia outer margin with few fine, simple setae; inner margin with three short, spine-like setae; anterior apex with two spine-like setae; patella-tibial suture present. Tarsal claws with 10 denticles each (Fig. 8a). Mid femur length about 2.6�� maximum width; outer margin with row of about 9 long, spine-like setae. Hind femur length about 3�� maximum width; outer margin with row of about 14 long, spinelike setae. Abdomen (Fig. 1). Coloration light brown, but segment VIII lighter. Segment X with cross-like color pattern. Posterior margin of tergum IV with truncate spines (Fig. 9). Gills oval. Gills IV (Fig. 10) light brown; margins with narrow spines intercalating short, fine, simple setae; tracheae pigmented. Gill I 1.4�� length of segment II; gill IV 1.8�� length of segment V; gill VII 1.4�� length of segment VIII. Paraproct (Fig. 11) with two spines near inner margin; without shagreened area. Cerci light brown with brown band at mid length; outer and inner margins of terminal filament and inner margins of cerci with tufts of long, simple setae; outer margins of cerci with spines at apex of each segment. Etymology. The specific epithet is an arbitrary combination of letters referring to Meta, the Colombian state where this species was found. Distribution. Thusfar, the species has been found only in the R��o Orotoy, in the Orinoco River basin of Meta, Colombia (Fig. 12). Comments. The general shape of the labial palp of Camelobaetidius metae is similar to that found in C. carolinae Boldrini & Pes, 2014, C. cruzi Boldrini & Pes, 2014 and C. matilei Thomas & P��ru, 2003. Camelobaetidius metae, however, can be distinguished from C. carolinae by the size of the denticles on the tarsal claws, with the latter species having the first denticle distinctly longer than others, while the denticles in C. metae are all similar in length. Camelobaetidius metae is distinguished from C. cruzi by the shape of labial palp segment II, which is subquandrangular in C. cruzi versus oblong in C. metae. Camelobaetidius metae is distinguished from C. matilei by the hind wing, which is present in C. metae but absent in C. matilei. Furthermore, C. metae presents an outer margin of the forefemur with a row of 23 clavate setae and a posterior margin of tergum IV with truncate spines, while C. carolinae presents an outer margin of the forefemur with a row of 18 long, spine-like setae and a posterior margin of tergum IV with rounded spines; C. cruzi presents an outer margin of the forefemur with a row of nine long, spinelike setae and the posterior margin of tergum IV with rounded spines, and C. matilei presents an outer margin of the forefemur with a row of three long, spine-like setae and a posterior margin of tergum IV with truncate spines. Material examined. Holotype: Male mature nymph (mounted on slides, medium Euparal), Colombia, Meta, Castilla La Nueva, Vereda Cacayal, R��o Orotoy, 3��52���9.0��� N, 73��38���18.6��� W, 419m, 02/vi/2011, Osorio D, Caro C, cols (CEBUC). Paratypes: fourteen mature nymphs (four specimens mounted on slides, medium: Euparal), same data as holotype (seven specimens deposited in CEBUC and seven specimens deposited in MIUQ). Additional material: 35 nymphs, same data as holotype deposited in MIUQ. Habitat (Fig. 13). The nymphs were collected from the R��o Orotoy, which is in the Orinoco River basin. The stream is meandering and open, with clear water. It is 20 m wide, has an average depth of 0.68 m and discharge of 2.7 m 3 /s for the sampling season (high water). The stream bed is composed of boulders and sandy clay substrate. The riverbank presents secondary vegetation, typical of a foothill forest. Nymph: 1) medial denticle of anteromedial emargination of labrum much larger than others; 2) tusk on inner margin of maxillae hardly developed; 3) posterolateral projections present on abdominal segments II���IX; 4) lines of pectinate setae on ventral surface of tibia III forming one main line. Female imago. Length: body: 7.7���8.8 mm; forewings: 9.3���10.1mm; hind wings: 1.4���1.5 mm. General color light brown (Figs. 14), darker in the living specimen (Fig. 24). Head (Fig. 14): Washed with black. Scape and pedicel brown; ocelli white, blackish basally. Thorax (Fig. 14): Nota with anteronotal protuberance, medioscutum, submedioscutum, posterior scutal protuberance and scutellum brown; sterna brown.. Wings (Figs. 15, 16, 16 a): membrane of forewing hyaline, wing base brownish; main longitudinal and intercalaries veins dark brown, cross-veins pale yellow; one cross-vein basal to bulla. The adults of U. passorum have similar characters to U. flavopedes adults. The males share the apex of the penis lobe rounded, and males and females share the forewing with costal and subcostal areas hyaline. Both species can be found in savanna areas in the Roraima State, but the U. passorum specimens can be found at altitudes>300 meters above the sea level, while U. flavopedes can be found in areas near 100 meters above the sea. The adults of U. passorum have similar characters to U. flavopedes adults. The males share the apex of the penis lobe rounded, and males and females share the forewing with costal and subcostal areas hyaline. Both species can be found in savanna areas in the Roraima State, but the U. passorum specimens can be found at altitudes>300 meters above the sea level, while U. flavopedes can be found in areas near 100 meters above the sea. The adults of U. passorum are easily recognized by the presence of brownish wing bases.

Ulmeritoides amajari sp. nov. (Figs. 1���13) Diagnoses. Ulmeritoides amajari sp. nov. can be separated from the other species of the genus by the following combination of characters. In the imago: 1) forewings hyaline, base brown and without dark spots in bullae in Sc and R1 (Fig. 4); 2) one cross-veins basal to bulla in forewings (Fig. 4); 3) abdominal color pattern as in Fig. 1; 4) penis lobe ending in an rounded apical projection (Fig. 7). In the female: forewings hyaline, base brown and without dark spots in bullae in Sc and R1; 2) one cross-veins basal to bulla in forewings; 3) abdominal color pattern as in Fig. 2. In the nymph: 1) medial denticle on anteromedian emargination of labrum much larger than others (Figs. 8, 8 a); 2) tusk on inner margin of maxillae well developed (Figs. 10, 10 a); 3) dorsum of fore femur with numerous, acute spines (Fig. 11); 4) lines of pectinate setae on ventral surface of tibia III forming one main line (Fig. 13). Lumahyphes cocal sp. nov. shares most of the characteristics found in the diagnosis for the genus made by Domínguez et al. (2006). The only generic characterisitic that is not found in this new species is that vein CuP of the fore wing does not retains its basal portion paralleling CuA. In this new species, the basal portion of vein CuP on fore wing is attached to A (Fig. 3), as found in the genera Traverhyphes Molineri, 2001 and Vacupernius Wiersema & McCafferty, 2000. In the key by Dominguez et al. (2006), L. cocal sp. nov. would key as L. guacra or L. yagua. However, adults of these three species can be distinguished easily by the genitalia. Lumahyphes cocal sp. nov. has the accessory dorsal structure of penes and median projections of styliger plate not curved (Fig. 7); the spines of the penes are relatively long, S-curved in lateral view, and with anteriorly directed apices (Fig. 7). Lumahyphes guacra and L. yagua, on the other hand, have the dorsal structure and the inner posterolateral projection of styliger plate curved (as in Dominguez et al. 2006: Figs. 100 F, L), and the spines of the penes have a different shape in lateral view. The nymphs of Camelobaetidius sallesi sp. nov. is possibly related to C. spinosus Boldrini & Salles, 2012 b, both species present the unique combination of characteristics such as segment II of labial palp with distomedial projection triangular with apex pointed (Fig. 43), thoracic gill absent at the base of forecoxa, terminal filament as long as cerci, and presence of pointed spines on posterior margin of terga (Fig. 45). The nymphs of Camelobaetidius baumgardneri sp. nov. are possibly closely related to C. sallesi sp. nov. Both species present the unique combination of characteristics such as the segment II of labial palp with distomedial projection triangular with apex pointed, thoracic gill absent at base of forecoxa, tarsal claws with similar number of denticles, and terminal filament as long as cerci. Camelobaetidius baumgardneri is easily distinguished from C. sallesi sp. nov. by the shape of labrum, subrectangular (Fig. 8) in C. baumgardneri sp. nov., and narrowly rounded anteriorly (Fig. 38) in C. sallesi sp. nov., and by the shape of the spines on posterior margin of terga IV, rounded in C. baumgardneri sp. nov. (Fig. 15), and pointed (Fig. 45) in C. sallesi sp. nov.. Material examined. Corinnella thomasi sp. nov. is easily distinguished from C. eximia by the shape of the labrum, with the distomedial emargination clearly discernible in C. eximia versus shallow in C. thomasi sp. nov.; by the shape of tarsal claws, with only the first denticle distinctly longer in C. eximia versus the first and last denticles distinctly longer in C. thomasi sp. nov.; by the shape of spines on the posterior margins of terga, being pointed in C. eximia and rounded in C. thomasi sp. nov. The rounded spines found on the posterior margins of terga can be visualized using a microscope with phase contrast.When Dominique et al. (2005) described the genus Corinnella (as Corinna), they stated that the tarsal claws were unique among Baetidae. Later, Nieto (2010), while performing a phylogenetic analysis of South American Baetidae, considered that the tarsal claws of Corinnella were spatulate, such as in the genus Camelobaetidius. Based on the new species, we agree with Nieto (2010) regarding the type of tarsal claws. Camelobaetidius mantis Traver & Edmunds 1968: 675. nov. syn. Diagnoses. Nymph: 1) segment II of labial palp with distomedial projection strongly produced; (2) forefemur with prominent protuberance on inner margin; (3) foretibia with indentation at apex; (4) small thoracic gill present at the base of the forecoxa; (5) prosternum with a single, medial protuberance; (6) tarsal claws with 17���28 denticles; (7) paraproct with 5���17 small marginal spines. Distribution. Surinam (Demoulin, 1966); Venezuela (Nieto et al. 2011). Brazil: Amap�� (Salles et al. 2005 b), Amazonas (Traver & Edmunds, 1968). Comments. Demoulin (1966) described the nymphs of C. leentvaari, the type species of the genus. He overlooked some characters, including the number of denticles on the tarsal claws. Two years later, Traver and Edmunds (1968) described C. mantis, a species very similar to C. leentvaari. Nymphs of both species have segment II of the labial palp with a strongly produced distomedial projection, the forefemur with a prominent protuberance on its inner margin, the foretibia with an apical indentation, and the terminal filament reduced. Traver and Edmunds (1968) distinguished C. mantis from C. leentvaari by the number of denticles on tarsal claws (25 denticles in C. mantis and nine denticles in C. leentvaari, which were visualised and counted in the drawing made by Demoulin, 1966); by the shape of the protuberance on the inner margin of the forefemur (more acute in C. mantis); and by the trachea and lateral branches of the gills being pigmented in C. mantis and unpigmented in C. leentvaari. Later, Salles et al. (2005 b) redescribed C. leentvaari based in the type material and additional material from Brazil. They examined the number of denticles on the tarsal claws and noted that the actual number ranged from 17���23; they also described the presence of a single medial protuberance on the prosternum for this species. After examination of the C. mantis holotype, we noted that this species also has a single medial protuberance on the prosternum. Very slight differences in the shape of the prominent protuberance on the inner margin of the forefemur and the pigmentation of abdominal gill tracheae, as well as differences in the number of denticles on the tarsal claws (25 on C. mantis, 17���28 on C. leentvaari) are easily attributable to natural variation. Greater variation has been documented within other species, such as the Nearctic C. musseri (Traver & Edmunds, 1968) (McCafferty & Randolph, 2000); thus, we consider C. mantis to be a junior synonym of C. leentvaari. We also observed that some specimens of C. leentvaari from Amap��, Brazil, have an important variation in the length of the thoracic gill at the base of foreleg. While the thoracic gill at the base of the foreleg may be relatively short in general (Fig. 14), one nymph in particular has an extremely short thoracic gill (Fig. 15) that might be missed upon superficial examination. Thus, we emphasize the importance of careful examination of specimens for proper identification. Material examined. This species was described based on nymphs from Brazil, states of Paraná and Santa Catarina (Traver & Edmunds, 1968). Nieto (2003) recorded this species from Argentina and described the male imago. Later, Salles et al. (2003, 2004a), Francischetti et al. (2004) and Boldrini & Salles (2009) recorded this species from Southeastern Brazil. Falcão et al. (2011) have also recorded this species from Northern Brazil, although some important variations were found in the nymphs (i.e. 35 denticles on tarsal claw). Herein, we improve the description of the male adult of C. anubis proposed by Nieto (2003), by adding new characters, and describe the female imago of this species. Male adult. Length of tibia I: 1.6 mm; tibia II: 1.2 mm, and tibia III: 1.0 mm. Head (Figs. 1, 2). Dorsal portion of turbinate eyes oval; length 1.6× width; stalk height 0.5× width of dorsal portion; inner margins parallel, not reaching each other. Thorax (Figs. 1, 2). Metanotum with anteronotal protuberance pointed; metascutellar protuberance rounded and of the same level of the metanotum; pleura yellowish. Tarsi segment II of the middle and hind legs with one short apical spine (as in Fig. 7). Leg I: tibia 2.1× length of femur; tarsi 1.2× length of femur. Leg II: tibia 1.7× length of femur; tarsi 0.3× length of femur. Leg III: tibia 1.5× length of femur; tarsi broken. Abdomen (Figs. 1, 2). Camelobaetidius juparana sp. nov. Boldrini & Salles (Figs. 11; 13–22) Diagnoses. Nymphs: 1) Segment II of labial palp with distomedial projection robust and rounded (Fig. 18); 2) bifid thoracic gill present at the base of forecoxa (Fig. 19a); 3) tarsal claws with 23–29 denticles (Fig. 19b); 4) paraproct without spines (Fig. 22); 5) terminal filament as long as cerci. Comments. Camelobaetidius juparana sp. nov. is possibly closely related to C. hamadae Salles & Serrão, 2005 another species in which the nymphs present a bifid thoracic gill at the base of the forecoxa and a paraproct without spines. It is easily distinguished from C. hamadae by the number of setae on the dorsal margin of labrum, 10 versus 32 in C. hamadae; by the shape of the hypopharynx, superlingua with distal margin oblique versus truncated in C. hamadae, and lingua subequal in length to superlingua versus superlingua shorter than lingua in C. hamadae; by the number of denticles on tarsal claws, 23–29 denticles versus 36–37 denticles in C. hamadae; and by the shape of the spines on posterior margin of terga IV: it is truncate in C. juparana sp. nov., and in C. hamadae this spines are triangular. Description Nymph. Length of body: 2.9–3.5 mm; length of antennae: 1.3 mm; length of cerci: 1.7 mm; length of terminal filament: 1.4 mm; tibia I: 0.5 mm; tibia II: 0.5 mm; tibia III: 0.4 mm. Head (Fig. 11). Light brown. Antennae light brown, with scape and pedicel subcilindrical. Lateral branch of epicranial suture straight. Labrum (Fig. 13). Subrectangular, broader than long. Length about 0.6× maximum width; lateral margin with long, fine and simple setae; anterolateral margin with long, fine and pectinate setae; medially with short, robust, pectinate setae. Dorsally with seven shorts, fine, simple setae scattered over basal area; dorsolateral arc of setae with a row 10 long, fine and apically pointed setae. Left mandible (Fig. 14). Prostheca robust, apically denticulate. Margin between prostheca and mola straight with a row of spine-like setae; subtriangular process narrow and produced; tuft of setae at apex of mola absent. Basal half bare. Right mandible (Fig. 15). Prostheca slender, apically denticulate; margin between prostheca and mola straight, with two spine-like setae; tuft of spine-like setae at base of mola present; tuft of setae at apex of mola present. Basal half bare. Hypopharynx (Fig. 16). Lingua subequal in length to superlingua; apex rounded, with tuft of short, fine, simple setae. Superlingua not expanded with fine, apex truncated obliquely, simple setae scattered over lateral and distal margin. Maxilla (Fig. 17). Crown of galea-lacinia with four denticles; inner dorsal row of setae with two denti-setae. Medial protuberance of galea with 1 + 2 long, fine, simple setae. Maxillary palp 1.3× length of galea-lacinia. Labium (Fig. 18a). Glossa narrow and subequal in length to paraglossa; inner margin with six spine-like setae increasing in length distally; apex with one long, spine-like setae; outer margin with three long, spine-like setae; ventral surface with one short, fine, simple setae on anteromedian area. Paraglossa sub-rectangular, curved inward; apex with two rows of long, fine, pectinate setae (Fig. 18b); ventral surface bare; dorsal surface with three robust, simple setae near apex. Labial palp with segment I subequal in length of segments II and III combined; outer margin of segment I with short, simple setae near apex; segment II with distomedial protuberance robust and rounded, with simple setae over lateral and ventral area; dorsally with a row of three fine, spine-like setae; segment III rounded, length 0.7× width, scattered with fine, simple setae, and fine, spine-like setae. Thorax (Fig. 11). Light brown with marks brown; metanotum light brown washed with brown. Hind wing pad present. Bifid thoracic gill (Fig. 19a) present at the base of forecoxa. Femur light brown with a medial brown mark, and with dorsal surface and apex brown; tibia light brown with base and apex brown, tarsi light brown washed with brown. Tibia I, II and III subequal in length of the respective femur; tarsi I about 0.7× in length of femur; tarsi II and III about 0.5× in length of the respective femur. Forefemur (Fig. 19a). Length about 2.2× maximum width; dorsally with row of c.a. 40 long, spine-like setae; length of setae 0.3× width of femur; ventrally with short, spine-like setae. Foretibia (Fig. 19a). Dorsally with row of short, fine, simple setae; ventrally with few, short, spine-like setae; anterior surface with a row of long, fine, simple setae; tibio - patelar suture present, 0.6× in length of tibia. Foretarsi (Fig. 19b). Dorsally and ventrally with short, fine, simple setae; ventrally with five spine-like setae, increasing in length toward apex, and one long, fine, simple setae near apex. Tarsal claws (Fig. 19b) with 23–29 denticles. Abdomen (Fig. 11). Light brown; segments I, III and VI washed with brown, and anterior margin of the segment VII washed with brown; segments III and VI with distinct median and lateral brown marks. Terga IV with surface creased (Fig. 20); posterior margin with truncate spines. Gills IV (Fig. 21a). Light brown; margins with narrow spine intercalating short, fine, simple setae; tracheae pigmented (Fig. 21b), extended from main trunk. Gills oval. Gill I 0.5× length of segment II; gill IV 2.1× length of segment V; gill VII 0.9× length of segment VIII. Paraproct (Fig. 22). Without spines near on inner margin; surface with fine, simple setae, without shagreened area; postero-lateral extension with rounded marginal spines. Cerci light brown; outer and inner margin of the terminal filament and inner margin of the cerci with tufts of long, simple setae. Etymology: The specific epithet juparana is a reference to Lagoa Juparanã, one of Brazilian largest lakes. Diagnoses. Nymphs: 1) Segment II of labial palp with distomedial projection rounded and strongly projected; 2) maxillary palp segment II bifid; 3) thoracic gill absent at base of forecoxa; 4) tarsal claws with 8 ��� 21 denticles; 5) paraproct with 4 pointed marginal spines; 6) terminal filament as long as cerci. Comments. This species was described based on nymphs from French Guyana (Dominique et al., 2001a). Salles et al. (2004b) recorded it for the first time from Brazil from the state of Mato Grosso. Later, this species was recorded from the states of Rond��nia (Salles et al., 2005), Roraima (Falc��o et al. 2011) and Piau�� (Boldrini et al., 2012). Nieto et al. (2011) recorded this species for the first time from Venezuela. As in Falc��o et al. (2011), we found differences in relation to the number of denticles on the tarsal claws as originally described by Dominique et al. (2001), with 21 denticles on tarsal claws. Falc��o et al. (2011) found one nymph with 8 ��� 9 denticles, and we have also found the same variation in two nymphs in the material from states of Minas Gerais and Esp��rito Santo. As in Falc��o et al. Camelobaetidius juparana sp. nov. Boldrini & Salles (Figs. 11; 13–22) Diagnoses. Nymphs: 1) Segment II of labial palp with distomedial projection robust and rounded (Fig. 18); 2) bifid thoracic gill present at the base of forecoxa (Fig. 19a); 3) tarsal claws with 23–29 denticles (Fig. 19b); 4) paraproct without spines (Fig. 22); 5) terminal filament as long as cerci. Comments. Camelobaetidius juparana sp. nov. is possibly closely related to C. hamadae Salles & Serrão, 2005 another species in which the nymphs present a bifid thoracic gill at the base of the forecoxa and a paraproct without spines. It is easily distinguished from C. hamadae by the number of setae on the dorsal margin of labrum, 10 versus 32 in C. hamadae; by the shape of the hypopharynx, superlingua with distal margin oblique versus truncated in C. hamadae, and lingua subequal in length to superlingua versus superlingua shorter than lingua in C. hamadae; by the number of denticles on tarsal claws, 23–29 denticles versus 36–37 denticles in C. hamadae; and by the shape of the spines on posterior margin of terga IV: it is truncate in C. juparana sp. nov., and in C. hamadae this spines are triangular. Description Nymph. Length of body: 2.9–3.5 mm; length of antennae: 1.3 mm; length of cerci: 1.7 mm; length of terminal filament: 1.4 mm; tibia I: 0.5 mm; tibia II: 0.5 mm; tibia III: 0.4 mm. Head (Fig. 11). Light brown. Antennae light brown, with scape and pedicel subcilindrical. Lateral branch of epicranial suture straight. Labrum (Fig. 13). Subrectangular, broader than long. Length about 0.6× maximum width; lateral margin with long, fine and simple setae; anterolateral margin with long, fine and pectinate setae; medially with short, robust, pectinate setae. Dorsally with seven shorts, fine, simple setae scattered over basal area; dorsolateral arc of setae with a row 10 long, fine and apically pointed setae. Left mandible (Fig. 14). Prostheca robust, apically denticulate. Margin between prostheca and mola straight with a row of spine-like setae; subtriangular process narrow and produced; tuft of setae at apex of mola absent. Basal half bare. Right mandible (Fig. 15). Prostheca slender, apically denticulate; margin between prostheca and mola straight, with two spine-like setae; tuft of spine-like setae at base of mola present; tuft of setae at apex of mola present. Basal half bare. Hypopharynx (Fig. 16). Lingua subequal in length to superlingua; apex rounded, with tuft of short, fine, simple setae. Superlingua not expanded with fine, apex truncated obliquely, simple setae scattered over lateral and distal margin. Maxilla (Fig. 17). Crown of galea-lacinia with four denticles; inner dorsal row of setae with two denti-setae. Medial protuberance of galea with 1 + 2 long, fine, simple setae. Maxillary palp 1.3× length of galea-lacinia. Labium (Fig. 18a). Glossa narrow and subequal in length to paraglossa; inner margin with six spine-like setae increasing in length distally; apex with one long, spine-like setae; outer margin with three long, spine-like setae; ventral surface with one short, fine, simple setae on anteromedian area. Paraglossa sub-rectangular, curved inward; apex with two rows of long, fine, pectinate setae (Fig. 18b); ventral surface bare; dorsal surface with three robust, simple setae near apex. Labial palp with segment I subequal in length of segments II and III combined; outer margin of segment I with short, simple setae near apex; segment II with distomedial protuberance robust and rounded, with simple setae over lateral and ventral area; dorsally with a row of three fine, spine-like setae; segment III rounded, length 0.7× width, scattered with fine, simple setae, and fine, spine-like setae. Thorax (Fig. 11). Light brown with marks brown; metanotum light brown washed with brown. Hind wing pad present. Bifid thoracic gill (Fig. 19a) present at the base of forecoxa. Femur light brown with a medial brown mark, and with dorsal surface and apex brown; tibia light brown with base and apex brown, tarsi light brown washed with brown. Tibia I, II and III subequal in length of the respective femur; tarsi I about 0.7× in length of femur; tarsi II and III about 0.5× in length of the respective femur. Forefemur (Fig. 19a). Length about 2.2× maximum width; dorsally with row of c.a. 40 long, spine-like setae; length of setae 0.3× width of femur; ventrally with short, spine-like setae. Foretibia (Fig. 19a). Dorsally with row of short, fine, simple setae; ventrally with few, short, spine-like setae; anterior surface with a row of long, fine, simple setae; tibio - patelar suture present, 0.6× in length of tibia. Foretarsi (Fig. 19b). Dorsally and ventrally with short, fine, simple setae; ventrally with five spine-like setae, increasing in length toward apex, and one long, fine, simple setae near apex. Tarsal claws (Fig. 19b) with 23–29 denticles. Abdomen (Fig. 11). Light brown; segments I, III and VI washed with brown, and anterior margin of the segment VII washed with brown; segments III and VI with distinct median and lateral brown marks. Terga IV with surface creased (Fig. 20); posterior margin with truncate spines. Gills IV (Fig. 21a). Light brown; margins with narrow spine intercalating short, fine, simple setae; tracheae pigmented (Fig. 21b), extended from main trunk. Gills oval. Gill I 0.5× length of segment II; gill IV 2.1× length of segment V; gill VII 0.9× length of segment VIII. Paraproct (Fig. 22). Without spines near on inner margin; surface with fine, simple setae, without shagreened area; postero-lateral extension with rounded marginal spines. Cerci light brown; outer and inner margin of the terminal filament and inner margin of the cerci with tufts of long, simple setae. Etymology: The specific epithet juparana is a reference to Lagoa Juparanã, one of Brazilian largest lakes. Margin with narrow spines intercalating short, fine, simple setae; tracheae extending from main trunk to inner and outer margins. Paraproct (Fig. 13). With 8 marginal spines; surface with scale or scale-bases; postero-lateral extension with minute marginal spines. Caudal filaments. Coloration brown. Terminal filament 0.7–0.8x length of cerci. Posterior margin of segments with short spines on each segment. Inner margin of cercus and inner and outer margin of terminal filament with tufts of long, simple setae. Comments. Nymphs of the new species were found exclusively at the Rio Chapecozinho (Fig. 26), a relatively wide river (around 60 meters) with a riverbed formed by a flat basaltic slab covered in most areas by algae and hydrophytes (Podostemaceae) and few allochthonous vegetation. The nymphs were found inhabiting the vertical surface of the riverbed, always associated to hydrophytes and moderate to fast current. The altitude at the type locality is 1031 meters above the sea level (m.a.s.l.). The new species shares several characteristics with A. titthion and A. labiosus, as the absence of a frontal keel, setae at the apex of paraglossa pectinate, legs robust, spines at the posterior margin of terga blunt to rounded, poorly developed distomedial process of labial palp segment II, and, in the case of A. mecistognathus, sp. nov. and A. labiosus, elongate labium. Nevertheless, in the new species all mouthparts are distinctly elongate. In a general aspect, the mouthparts are nearly as long as the head capsule, which clearly distinguishes A. mecistognathus, sp. nov. from its congeners. Etymology. From the Greek words mecist, longest, and gnathus, jaws. An allusion to the unusual elongate mouthparts. Distribution. BRAZIL: Santa Catarina (Fig. 1a). Material examined. Americabaetis Kluge, 1992 Baetis (Americabaetis) Kluge, 1992: 18. Genus 1 nr Pseudocloeon Roback, 1966: 134. Acerpenna Waltz & McCafferty, in part: Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1994: 66. Americabaetis Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1996: 157; Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1999: 260; Domínguez et al., 2006: 66. Diagnoses. The genus was adequately characterized by Lugo-Ortiz and McCafferty (1996) and later by Domínguez et al. (2006). Herein we add one important character regarding the nymphal stage which has been observed in all Brazilian species as well as in an unidentified species from Central America: the shape of the lateral branch of the epicranial suture. In most baetids they are straight or curved, while in Americabaetis they are sinuous, somewhat similar to those of the genus Baetodes Needham & Murphy, and can be very useful when identifying nymphs of the family (see Figs. 2, 18 and 19). Other characteristic that can be emended to the nymphal diagnoses is the presence of scales and/or scale bases over body. Nymphs (modified from Domínguez et al. 2006): 1) Lateral branch of epicranial suture sinuous; 2) mandibles with setae between prostheca and mola, incisors fused apically, and prostheca robust with denticles apically; 3) maxillary palp two-segmented; 4) glossa with a row of long spine-like setae, paraglossae rectangular with 3 rows of long spine-like setae, segment II of labial palp with a distomedial projection; 5) tarsal claws with a single row of denticles; 6) hind wing pads absent; 7) abdominal gills present on segment II–VII; 8) scales and/or scale bases over body. Americabaetis mecistognathus Salles & Raimundi, sp. nov. (Figs. 1a, 2–13, 27) Diagnoses. Nymphs: 1) frontal keel absent (Fig. 2); 2) lingua broadly pointed apically (Fig. 6); 3) glossa 0.6x length of paraglossa (Fig. 8); 4) apex of paraglossa with rows of pectinate setae (Fig. 8); 5) segment II of labial palp with a moderate distomedial projection (Fig. 8); 6) posterior margin of abdominal terga with rounded spines (Fig. 11); 7) mouthparts unusually elongate (Fig. 2). Adults: unknown. Description. Nymph. Length of body: 4.0 mm; cerci, terminal filament, and antennae: broken-off in mature nymphs. Head. Coloration brown. Antenna light brown, scape and pedicel darker. Lateral branch of epicranial suture curved. Frontal keel absent. Antenna with scape and pedicel subcilindrical. Labrum (Fig. 3). Rectangular, longer than broad; length about 1.4x maximum width. Distal margin with medial emargination and small process; dorsally with few short, fine, simple setae scattered over surface. Dorsolateral arc of setae composed of 3 + 2 + 1 long, spine-like setae. Submarginal dorsal row of setae absent. Antero-lateral margin with long, pectinate setae. Ventrally with submarginal row of setae composed of row of short, bifid setae. Ventral surface with short, spine-like setae near anterolateral margin. Left mandible (Fig. 4). Incisors fused; inner and outer set of incisors respectively with 4 + 3 denticles; prostheca robust, apically denticulate and with comb-shape structure at apex. Margin between prostheca and mola straight, with crenulations on distal half, tuft of setae present. Subtriangular process wide, above level of area between prostheca and mola. Denticles of mola not constricted. Tuft of setae at apex of mola present, reduced to a single setae. Right mandible (Fig. 5). Incisors fused; inner and outer set of incisors respectively with 4 + 4 denticles. Prostheca robust, apically denticulate. Margin between prostheca and mola straight; tuft of setae present. Tuft of spine-like setae at base of mola present. Denticles of mola not constricted. Tuft of setae at apex of mola present, reduced to a single setae. Hypopharynx (Fig. 6). Lingua longer than superlingua; apex of lingua broadly acute. Superlingua not expanded; short, fine, simple setae scattered over lateral and distal margin. Maxilla (Fig. 7). Crown of galea-lacinia with 4 denticles; inner dorsal row of setae with 3 denti-setae. Medial protuberance of galea with 4 + 1 simple setae. Maxillary palp 3/4 length of galea-lacinia, with long, fine, simple setae scattered over surface. Palp segment II 1.2x length of segment I. Labium (Fig. 8). Glossa basally broad, narrowing apically and shorter than paraglossa; 0.6x length of paraglossa; inner margin with 7 spine-like setae, outer margin with 6 long spine-like setae increasing in length distally. Paraglossa sub-rectangular; apex with 3 rows of apically pectinate setae. Labial palp with segment I 0,6x length of segments II and III combined; segment I covered with short, simple setae on outer and inner margins and micropores basally; segment II with small distomedial protuberance (distomedial protuberance 0.4x width of base of segment III); inner margin with short simple setae, more numerous at apex; outer margin with few, short, simple setae; dorsally with row of 5 fine and simple setae; segment III conical; length 1,4x width; covered with spine-like and fine, simple setae. Thorax. General coloration brown with light brown marks. Foreleg (Fig. 9). Coloration brown. Ratio of foreleg 1.4:1.0:0.7:0.3. Forefemur. Length about 3x maximum width; dorsally with row of long blunt setae (in lateral view they look like spine-like setae); (length of setae about 0.1x maximum width of femur). Apex rounded and with blunt setae. Ventrally with short spinelike setae and micropores. Tibia. Dorsally with a row of scarce, short, fine, simple setae; ventrally with one row of spine-like setae. Tibio-patelar suture present. Tarsus. Dorsally with scarce short simple setae; ventrally with one row of spine-like setae. Tarsal claw with one row of 15 denticles. Mid and hind legs similar to foreleg. Abdomen. General coloration brown. Segments I and IV with posterior medial white mark; distal 2/3 of segment VII and segment X white; segments II to VII with lateral white longitudinal marks; segments II to VI, VIII and IX sublaterally washed with reddish brown (Fig. 10). Terga (Fig. 11). S urface with abundant scales or scale-bases. Posterior margin with rounded spines. Gills (Fig. 12). On segments II – VII. Margin with narrow spines intercalating short, fine, simple setae; tracheae extending from main trunk to inner and outer margins. Paraproct (Fig. 13). With 8 marginal spines; surface with scale or scale-bases; postero-lateral extension with minute marginal spines. Caudal filaments. Coloration brown. Terminal filament 0.7–0.8x length of cerci. Posterior margin of segments with short spines on each segment. Inner margin of cercus and inner and outer margin of terminal filament with tufts of long, simple setae. Comments. Nymphs of the new species were found exclusively at the Rio Chapecozinho (Fig. 26), a relatively wide river (around 60 meters) with a riverbed formed by a flat basaltic slab covered in most areas by algae and hydrophytes (Podostemaceae) and few allochthonous vegetation. The nymphs were found inhabiting the vertical surface of the riverbed, always associated to hydrophytes and moderate to fast current. The altitude at the type locality is 1031 meters above the sea level (m.a.s.l.). The new species shares several characteristics with A. titthion and A. labiosus, as the absence of a frontal keel, setae at the apex of paraglossa pectinate, legs robust, spines at the posterior margin of terga blunt to rounded, poorly developed distomedial process of labial palp segment II, and, in the case of A. mecistognathus, sp. nov. and A. labiosus, elongate labium. Nevertheless, in the new species all mouthparts are distinctly elongate. In a general aspect, the mouthparts are nearly as long as the head capsule, which clearly distinguishes A. mecistognathus, sp. nov. from its congeners. Etymology. From the Greek words mecist, longest, and gnathus, jaws. An allusion to the unusual elongate mouthparts. Distribution. BRAZIL: Santa Catarina (Fig. 1a). Material examined. In Brazil A. labiosus is apparently restricted to the southern area of the country. Their nymphs, as those of A. titthion and A. mecistognathus, sp. nov., inhabit shallow areas with moderate to fast current (Fig. 29). However, unlike these species, they are often associated with dead leaves above rocks. The altitudinal range of this species varies from 700 to 1900 m.a.s.l. Distribution. Male imago: 1) turbinate eyes uniformly separated from each other, upper surface ellipsoidal; 2) terga with a light yellowish brown band along midline; 3) forceps with first segment distinctly constricted medioapically; 4) posterior margin of subgenital plate without a small rounded projection; 5) length of body relatively long (6.3 mm). Nymphs of A. longetron are present almost exclusively in banks with marginal vegetation in areas with slow to moderate current; they resemble A. alphus in several aspects, as mouthpart morphology and somewhat similar habitat (Fig. 28). However, the distribution of A. longetron is far restricted when compared to that of A. alphus. The altitudinal range of this species varies from 371 to 1063 m.a.s.l. Material examined. Americabaetis titthion Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1996 (Figs. 1e, 30) Americabaetis titthion Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1996: 167; Francischetti et al., 2003: 69; Salles et al., 2004: 23; Dom��nguez et al., 2006: 72; Salles et al., 2010: 302. Diagnoses. Nymphs: 1) frontal keel absent; 2) lingua broadly pointed apically; 3) glossa 0.8x length of paraglossa; 4) apex of paraglossa with rows of pectinate setae; 5) segment II of labial palp with a moderate distomedial projection; 6) posterior margin of abdominal terga with rounded spines; 7) meso and metasternum with a setose paired protuberance. Female imago: 1) forewing with costal area reddish-brown; 2) posterior margin of head dorsally projected; 3) meso and metasterna with small, setose paired protuberance. Male imago: unknown, see comments bellow. Distribution. BRAZIL: Rio Grande do Sul, Paran��, Santa Catarina; Rio de Janeiro, Esp��rito Santo, Minas Gerais (Fig. 1d). Comments. Americabaetis titthion is until now endemic to southeastern Brazil. Nymphs are present in shallow areas above rocks, in moderate to fast current (Fig. 30). The meso and metasternal projections, typical of this species [see Fig. 51 of Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty (1996)], probably aids the nymph to withstand in this kind of habitat. At the Parque Nacional do Capara��, where it is abundant, this is the only species of mayfly found above 2250 m.a.s.l. Although only females of this species have been described (Salles et al. 2003), the vestiges of the meso and metaesternal projections should also be encountered in male adults once these protuberances are found in nymphs of both sexes. This characteristic would be enough to distinguish male imagos of A. titthion from other members of Americabaetis. Lugo-Ortiz and McCafferty (1996), as well as Dom��nguez et al. (2006), described the setae at the apex of the paraglossa of this species as simple. However, we examined nymphs of A. titthion from different localities and concluded that these setae are pectinate, just as in the other species of the genus that live in areas with moderate to fast current above rocks (i.e., A. labiosus and A. mecistognathus, sp. nov.). At least in South America, species that live in a similar habitat, such as those of the genera Baetodes and Camelobaetidius Demoulin, exhibit the same kind of setae at the same place. According to Batista et al. (2006), these mayflies should be assigned to the grazer functional feeding group, once they use the tip of its mouthparts, as collectors, to remove periphyton. The presence of that kind of setae at the apex of the paraglossa should be regarded as a convergence among these genera, and a possible sinapomorphy among these three species of Americabaetis. Americabaetis alphus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1996 (Figs. 1b, 20, 23, 24, 28) Americabaetis alphus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1996: 163; Francischetti et al., 2003: 69; Salles et al., 2004: 2; Domínguez et al., 2006: 69; Salles et al., 2010: 302. Diagnoses. Nymphs: 1) frontal keel present; 2) lingua pointed apically; 3) glossa 0.8x length of paraglossa; 4) apex of paraglossa with rows of simple setae; 5) segment II of labial palp with a strong distomedial projection; 6) posterior margin of abdominal terga with pointed spines. Male imago: 1) turbinate eyes uniformly and widely separated from each other, upper surface ellipsoidal; 2) forceps with first segment not constricted medioapically; 3) posterior margin of subgenital plate without a small rounded projection; 4) length of body relatively small (less than 5.0 mm). Distribution. ARGENTINA, BOLIVIA, CHILE, PARAGUAY, BRAZIL: Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso, Bahia. NEW RECORDS: Pernambuco, Sergipe, Goiás, Amazonas (Fig. 1a). Comments. Americabaetis alphus is probably the species of Ephemeroptera with the widest distributional range in South America, as well as one of the most abundant, at least in Brazil. Their nymphs are found in several biomes and on small streams to large rivers, often associated with marginal vegetation and leaf litter in areas with slow to moderate current (Fig. 28). The altitudinal range of this species is also highly variable, specimens were found from the sea level to 1900 m.a.s.l. They were also encountered in pristine to moderately impacted streams, demonstrating that the species is somewhat tolerant, what, in turn, would explain its wide distribution. Material examined.
