This article discusses the author's views on art and wall drawing with a focus on the concept of thickness as a defining characteristic of objects. Three events of the 1960s that challenged the art-as-idea philosophy are discussed: the exhibition "The Great Age of Fresco: Giotto to Pontormo" which featured the works and sinopia or preparartory drawings of muralists such as Fra Angelico, Giotto, the Lorenzetti Brothers, and Masolino; the 1968 student riots in Paris which led to the production of political signboards with graffiti slogans; and an exhibition by Andy Warhol which used silver mylar balloons and a pink and green florescent cow wallpaper. The author explains the idea of an unmediated experience in wall paintings.
