Gustav Schilling charakterisierte Clara Wieck Schumann 1838 als geniale Virtuosin ebenso wie als geniale Komponistin, wahrend sie selbst keinen Geniestatus fur sich beanspruchte. Durch die im medizinisch-anthropologischen Diskurs im 19. Jahrhundert behauptete ›naturliche Ungleichheit‹ von Frauen und Mannern wurde die Idee eines heldenhaften Genies, das unangestrengt und voraussetzungslos originelle Ideen produziert, verstarkt. Demgegenuber dokumentierte die Kunstlerin, dass Komponieren harte Arbeit sein konne und sie das Handwerk systematisch gelernt habe. Heute hat sich der Fokus von der Diskussion des Genies auf die Erforschung von Kreativitat verlagert. Einige zentrale Fragen, wie die nach den Akteur*innen, dem Publikum, den Aktionen, den Artefakten sowie den soziokulturellen und materiellen Entstehungsbedingungen musikalischer Werke konnen mit Kategorien der Genderforschung verbunden werden. Aus dieser Perspektive betrachte ich die Entstehung von Clara Wieck Schumanns Scherzo op. 10 und der Romanze op. 11/2. Die Kenntnis, wie und was unter Genie zu verschiedenen Zeiten verstanden wurde, konfrontiert uns damit, uber eigene explizite wie implizite Uberzeugungen nachzudenken und neue Zugange zu ›post-genialistischen‹ Kunstwerken zu erarbeiten. In 1838 Gustav Schilling characterized Clara Wieck Schumann as a virtuoso and composer of genius; however, she never claimed genius for herself. The assumed naturalness of female inequality in medical and anthropological discourses of the nineteenth century reinforced the idea of a natural-born heroic genius who produces original ideas without effort and preconditions. In contrast, Clara Wieck Schumann documented that composing could be hard work and that she had received a systematic musical education. Today, the discussion of genius has given way to research on creativity. Some key questions of this research such as the actors, audiences, actions, artifacts, and sociocultural and material affordances of musical works can be connected to categories of gender studies. From this perspective I reflect on the compositional process of Clara Wieck Schumann’s Scherzo op. 10 and Romanze op. 11, no. 2. Understanding the concept of genius in different historical periods prompts us to re-think our own explicit and implicit assumptions and to find new approaches to “post-genius” art works.

International audience; This article explores the works of Cesare Lombroso on the man of genius and his relationships with insanity. It highlights these works’ prominent features such as the medicalized approach, the question of the heredity of talents, and the links between abnormality and eccentricity. Although for Lombroso music has a special effect on the human psyche, he develops few specific ideas on the musician’s genius in comparison to other artists. Underlining the development of the theme of the man of genius in post-unitarian Italy, this article suggests that it becomes a genre which combines literary aspirations, common sense, and medical considerations. While relying on existing scholarship and on interpretations of artists’ behavior, Lombroso points out the close relationship between the genius’s psychology and that of the mentally ill. Treating the question of the genius and the neurotic artist, Lombroso’s research, despite the criticisms it faced, clearly echoed preoccupations of great interest today.; L’article s’appuie sur les œuvres de Cesare Lombroso portant sur le génie et ses relations avec la folie pour mettre en avant certains de leurs traits marquants, tels que la lecture médicalisante, la question de l’hérédité des talents et le rapport entre anormalité et excentricité ; même si la musique joue pour lui un rôle particulier sur le psychisme, Lombroso développe peu d’idées spécifiques sur le génie du musicien par rapport à d’autres artistes. En dépit des critiques reçues, son travail a des échos jusqu’à nous car le thème du génie et de l’artiste névrosé traverse les époques.; Il saggio analizza le opere di C. Lombroso che trattano del genio e delle sue relazioni con la follia. Sono innanzitutto individuate alcune caratteristiche importanti, ovvero la lettura medicalizzata, la questione dell’eredità dei talenti e la relazione tra anormalità ed eccentricità ; si sottolinea che sebbene Lombroso attribuisca alla musica un ruolo preciso nel funzionamento della psiche, sono pochi i passaggi della sua opera dedicati specificatamente al genio del musicista. In un secondo momento, il saggio analizza i discorsi prodotti sul tema del genio nel periodo dell’Unità d’Italia, invitando a considerarli come frutto di un genere nuovo in cui convergono slanci letterari, buon senso e considerazioni mediche. Si dimostra come Lombroso, servendosi di studi contemporanei e di analisi diverse del comportamento dell’artista, cerchi di stabilire un’equazione tra genio e follia. Essendo il genio e l’artista nevrotico figure transepocali, l’opera lombrosiana trova dunque, nonostante le numerose critiche ricevute, echi significativi nel nostro tempo.

Avec William Shakespeare (1864), ouvrage de circonstance écrit en exil à l’occasion du tricentenaire de Shakespeare et de la traduction de ses Œuvres complètes par François-Victor Hugo, Victor Hugo transforme un essai critique en manifeste politique contre le Second Empire et en arsenal de défense du romantisme. Ce monument érigé à la gloire de Shakespeare définit le génie comme l’incarnation de l’esprit de son peuple et de son temps. Hugo y prend le grand auteur anglais pour modèle identificatoire. Les personnages, situations et moments-clefs de l’œuvre de Shakespeare qu’il retient coïncident avec les préoccupations de l’homme romantique. With his 1864 William Shakespeare, a work he wrote in exile to celebrate both the tercentenary of Shakespeare’s birth and the translation of the Complete Works by his son François-Victor Hugo, Victor Hugo turned a critical essay into a political manifesto against the Second French Empire and in favour of the Romantic movement. In this monument erected to Shakespeare’s glory, Hugo defined genius as the incarnation of a people’s spirit at a specific time, choosing the Bard as his own role model. The characters, situations and passages from Shakespeare’s works which he selected for his analysis corresponded to motifs that were dear to him as a Romantic writer.

Die Verwendung ästhetischer Attribute wie schön, hässlich oder elegant zur Beurteilung von Beweisen und Theoremen sowie die Charakterisierung der Mathematik als Kunst sind in der mathematischen Praxis weit verbreitete, von der Mathematikphilosophie jedoch selten systematisch aufgegriffene Phänomene. Für eine mathematikästhetische Diskussion ergeben sich daraus zwei Hauptfragen: Diejenige nach dem Charakter des zugrunde liegenden Schönheitsbegriffs sowie die nach einem Kunststatus der Mathematik. Auf der Grundlage von Reflexionen aktiver Mathematiker und darüber hinausgehender Literatur zur mathematischen Praxis werden vier die mathematische Schönheit charakterisierende Eigenschaftskomplexe identifiziert. Mit Hilfe der Analyse historischer Zeugnisse der Mathematikästhetik und der gegenüber dem Schönheitsurteil über Mathematisches kritischen Position Immanuel Kants kann die mathematische Schönheit als emotional erlebbares, rational vermitteltes, subjektives Wohlgefallen charakterisiert werden. Die aus der Annahme des Kunstcharakters der Mathematik folgende Perspektive auf Gegenstände, beteiligte Personen und Genese des Faches kann erneut kontrastierend zur Kantischen Argumentation – insbesondere gegen den Geniestatus des Mathematikers – in Beziehung gesetzt werden. Die Analyse zeigt die Mathematik als in vielen Aspekten kunstähnliche Disziplin und den produktiven Beitrag des Mathematik-Kunst-Vergleichs zu einer adäquaten Beschreibung der mathematischen Praxis. Die Anwendung der ästhetischen Perspektive im Rahmen der Mathematikdidaktik und die Illustration durch konkrete Klassiker der Mathematikästhetik zeigt deren Möglichkeiten exemplarisch und führt zur Konkretisierung der theoretischen Ergebnisse. Beides unterstreicht die Bedeutung der ästhetischen Erfahrung Mathematik. Using attributes like beautiful, ugly or elegant to characterise proofs and theorems as well as treating mathematics as an art is common in mathematical practice but usually not studied systematically in the philosophy of mathematics. Therefore, from a philosophical point of view there are two main questions to be discussed within the aesthetics of mathematics: 1. Which concept of beauty is used? 2. Can mathematics to some extent be considered as art? By analysing statements of active mathematicians and philosophical literature on mathematical practice, four complexes of aesthetic properties can be identified. By means of historical case studies and in opposition to the critical position of Immanuel Kant, mathematical beauty can be characterised as a subjective pleasure based on intellectual and emotional experiences. Treating mathematics as a kind of art establishes a special perspective on the mathematical objects and the involved people as well as on the history of mathematics. This again can be seen in contrast to the position of Kant – especially against the mathematical genius. The analysis shows similarities of mathematics and the fine arts in many respects and that the aesthetical perspective provides an appropriate characterisation of mathematical practice. By taking an aesthetical point of view on questions concerning the teaching and learning of mathematics and by illustrating the results on classics of the aesthetics of mathematics the theoretical results are concretised. Furthermore this underlines the relevance of aesthetical experiences within mathematics.

Il en propose quelques applications à l’art contemporain, en suggérant notamment, à partir d’un exemple concret, que la question des temporalités pourrait aussi être étendue avec profit aux modalités de la reconnaissance en art. This paper provides an in-depth review of a book published by the American economist David W. Galenson on the “two cycles of artistic creativity” and their developments in various domains, including science. It offers a few applications to contemporary art, before demonstrating, out of a specific case, that the issue of temporalities should also be extended to the modes of artistic recognition.
