Daniel Hoffman's evocative motif of seven versions of Poe emphasizes the frequent shifts and transitions in Poe's stories and poems, giving us an author in constant shift and transition. By keeping his own voice prominent in his book and connecting his own struggles and intellectual discoveries with Poe's texts, Hoffman tied his own identity to Poe's, making criticism a form of autobiography and self-expression. Hoffman emphasized Poe's growing interest in metaphysics and cosmology in his later work, and considered Poe's interest in these ideas crucial to an understanding of his philosophy. In “Eureka,” sometimes read as a satire, Hoffman focused on Poe's deeply serious tone, and argued that the work was best regarded as a symbolic allegory. Hoffman connected “Eureka” with Poe's inner drives, and analyzed it as a forceful expression of Poe's cosmological vision of a universe bound for an eventual collapse into utterly unified force existing beyond materiality.

WH HOEVER first conceived the idea of the wheel-whether in Babylonia, where solid wheels were known as early as 3000 B.C. and wheels with axles as early as 1600 B.C., or in Egypt, where actual wooden wheels with bronze rims have been found as early as the fifteenth century B.C. and from the fourteenth century in Tutenkhamon's tomb-made a wonderful invention. It assisted the progress of civilization and the means of transportation. But, even if the wheel was known before the Greeks, the metaphor of the Wheel of Fortune, I believe, began with the Greeks. Many scholars have said that it first occurs in medieval literature, but that has been shown to be an erroneous hypothesis. Gildersleeve and Headlam realized that the idea was Greek, but Kirby Flower Smith' in the conmmentary on Tibullus i. 5. 70 says that the earliest reference to the Wheel of Fortune is Cicero In Pisonem 22: "The house of your colleague rang with song and cymbals while he himself danced naked at a feast, wherein, even while he executed his whirling gyrations, he felt no fear of the Wheel of Fortune" ("cum conlegae tui domus cantu et cymbalis personaret cumque ipse nudus in convivio saltaret, in quo cum illum saltatorium versaret orbem, ne tum quidem fortunae rotam pertimescebat"). ON a recent tour of exploration, after my Professorship in the American School of Classical Studies was ended, I visited Liopesi in Mesogaea. There I looked again at the bust of Demosthenes on a high rectangular pillar. It stands on Demosthenes Square near the Hotel of Demosthenes. The town, which in ancient days had near it large country estates, is called officially today Paiania, and busses from Athens are marked "Athenai-Paiania." This was the birthplace' of "Demosthenes, son of Demosthenes, of Paeania," of the tribe of Pandionis. I was allowed to see two important tombstones which had just been found near the village, but removed to a stable. With great difficulty and in poor light I was able to take photographs and squeezes. The first stele (pl. LXXXIX, A) is of Pentelic marble and belongs to the long narrow type of gravestone. It is broken at the bottom and is only 1.13 m. high. The top and both sides are preserved. The left side is broken at the top but is intact at the rear. The original width is 0.41 m., the thickness 0.12 m. to 0.13 m. The letters are about 0.02 m. high. Some like the omicron in line 3 are 0.018 m., some are as high as 0.025 m. The pediment or acroterium is 0.32 m. high. It consists of a palmette or rather godroon design with a smooth elliptical section inside (perhaps painted). It was divided vertically by a depressed line and ornamented below with an S-shaped spiral on either side. Such stelae often have a palmette acroterium, from archaic to Hellenistic times,2 but I know of no exact parallel to the pattern on the Paeania stele. Miss Richter2 reduces Dinsmoor's five types of stelae to two, an earlier type with a separate capital surmounted by a sphinx, and a later type with a volute palmette finial carved in the same piece with the shaft. The earlier type was derived from Egypt; the second type, to which our example belongs, from Ionia. This simpler and less elaborate form is due to the anti-luxury decree passed after Solon's time.3 There are several unpublished tall narrow stelae with palmette acroteria in the Agora museum,4 but the palmettes differ from ours. Many stelae have two rosettes beneath the main inscription.5 Often, as on our Paeania stele, other inscriptions or even sculptured reliefs are added below the rosettes. Often these rosettes resemble phialae.6 Sometimes they are modelled leaf for leaf, sometimes only the heart

THE excavations at Corinth by the American School brought to light, in 1896, chiefly in the Theatre, a large number of terra-cotta figurines, which were published in this Journal (Vol. II, 1898, pp. 206-222). In the succeeding campaigns little new material was obtained until 1902. In that year, however, and in 1903 considerable "1finds" of terra-cottas were made. The following pages present, first, selected specimens from among the mass of isolated finds, and, second, a "deposit" homogeneous in character.

IN A.J.A. IX, 1905, pp. 170 f., Professor Bates published an important amphora with the signature of the new potter, Meno, scratched on the base. Professor Bates says that "no record has been kept of the place of finding," and apparently neither he nor Furtwlingler (Sitzb. Miin. Akad. 1905, II, p. 259) was aware that the vase had been published by Noel des Vergers (L'ftrurie et Les Ptrusques, III, p. 8, pl. IX), who states that it was found at Vulci. Noel des Vergers omits the signature of Meno, but an examination of the amphora itself convinced me that it was probably genuine. He also gives eight strings instead of the correct seven to Apollo's lyre and wrongly attaches to the rear horse one of the ropes belonging to the front horse.

R ECENTLY there has come into my collection at the University of Mississippi through a European dealer, a small hoard of five Late Helladic or Mycenaean vases and ten terra-cotta statuettes which were said to have been found together in a tomb on the island of Salamis. They were all covered with a similar thick incrustation of a hard white calcium and chalk deposit which I had some difficulty in removing. It seems certain, however, that the different pieces were found together. First I shall speak of the vases. No. 1 (pl. II, A and B) is a small cyathus or one-handled cup, only 0.032 m. high, the diameter of the opening 0.05 to 0.054 m., and the sloping base 0.026 m. The cup is rudely made and does not sit well. It tapers upwards and outwards towards the handle which inclines downward, 0.02 m. high at the point of attachment. It projects 0.02 m. and is decorated with two black bands parallel with the sides of the handle. The cup is of buff clay, and its flaring sides are adorned with fifteen broad irregular vertical bands in brown glaze shading at times into black. In one or two cases the wriggly bands join before they reach the bottom of the vase and form a long triangle. The cup is similar in shape and style to one from Eleusis which also has the handle nearly even with the top. It is of similar reddish clay and decorated in bright red with parallel vertical leaf-like lines. The handle has similar thick parallel bands.2 It was found by Skias on the south slope of the Acropolis at Eleusis and published in Eph., 1898, p. 82, pl. II, 8, and by George Mylonas in Kourouniotes, 'EXevTo-LvaK4, I, 1932, pp. 123-124, fig. 103, no. 362. Others, nearly similar, all Late Helladic II, were found by Philios and Kourouniotes in the seventh and eighth Mycenaean tombs at Eleusis, the last undecorated, however." The shape and style occur already at Tarsus, AJA, li, 1947, pl. xcvII, 8 (1600-1450 B.C.). No. 2 (pl. II, c). This is a cylindrical tankard like a baby's milk mug or feeding cup,4 of the "Vaphio Shape," in form resembling the famous gold cups found at Vaphio, several gold cups found at Mycenae, Asine, etc., and terra-cotta cups which are so common in Late Helladic settlements. It is a beautiful pleasing shape which developed under the influence of metal forms in Late Helladic I and II out of Cretan prototypes of the Vaphio shape, such as those in the Metropolitan Museum.' The type occurs in Camares ware in Middle Minoan iii and Late Minoan I times, and it is rare in Late Helladic iii except in Crete. The Salamis cup is of light buff clay, 0.055 m. high, the opening 0.077 m., and the base 0.059 m. in diameter. It has a handle, painted brownish-black on the outside, which is attached at right angles below the top and above the base.6 Especially interesting is the perforation of the lip and the projecting spout (0.00 m. long and 0.0( m. wide), which is

NO sculptures have yet been found by the University of Michigan expedition2 at Antioch-towards-Pisidia which can be definitely described as original Greek works; but the Greek influence of the fifth century can be seen in at least two male Roman figures and in the statue of Victory.3 Only a few Roman statues or parts of statues in the round were unearthed and some of these show the influence of Pergamum. This influence is also conspicuous in the reliefs which represent the captive Pisidian chiefs and especially in the armor designs. The idealistic sculpture of the Greek classical period was concerned mainly with the glorification of gods and heroes and with the portrayal of victory under the guise of myth and allegory. It was not till after the conquest of Alexander4 that sculpture rendered in realistic detail not only the violence and confusion of battle but also the spoils of marine and military warfare, as in the decorative units on the balustrade of the stoa of the precinct of Athena Polias at Pergamu...
