In the renewal of visual culture in Romanesque times, liturgical furniture played a fundamental role, with the altar being the most privileged figurative space, as a fundamental cultic object for the configuration of the new ritual spaces. With this work we propose a review of some of the main Romanesque altars in the region (Santiago de Compostela, Oviedo, San Esteban de Ribas de Sil, etc.) in order to analyse the value of the images they reproduce in relation to the new vectors of Romanesque culture. The present paper tackles the issue of Brazilian visual memory in a discussion about the works of artists and researchers Rosana Paulino and Elian Almeida. More specifically, I discuss the strategies adopted by artists to revisit the representation of black bodies in critical fabulations that contribute to reconfiguring the gaze in/about Brazilian culture. From a conceptual point of view, the article discusses issues such as the role of archives, coloniality and visual culture. Building upon the notion of blotting (rasura) in Leda Martins, I propose the notion of erasure as a theoretical apparatus to understand Brazilian visual memory. Thus, it is expected to contribute with a conceptual category that allows to see the cracks and erasures of visuality in the Global South. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gender relations strongly established by and in economic, cultural and labor sectors contributed to the fact that, in contemporary times, embroidery was associated with the feminine. School and curricular practices also favor a certain distance between masculinity and embroidery. In view of this, we ask: What dialogues can be established between masculinities and art, in a perspective that values embroidery beyond artisanal work? To answer this question, in this article, we theoretically rely on Gender Studies and Masculinity Studies, thinking about them in articulation with Education. We aim to analyze how the gendered aspects of embroidery cross the contemporary artistic production of male artists. For this, structurally, we organize the discussion into two topics. In the first, we discuss the educational and pedagogical aspects of gender learning, emphasizing masculinities. In the second, we present an analysis of two artistic series made by the carioca artist Fábio Carvalho (1965--), namely: Em sendo patente…(2012) and Monarca (2012). Finally, in the considerations, we highlight the pedagogical character of visual artifacts and, based on the works of Fábio Carvalho, we argue about the need to rethink the images offered to children, including those involved in school practices.

Amidst the violence of the Mexican Revolution, the poet José Juan Tablada published Mexico's first modern artist's book and art book: Hiroshigué: El pintor de la nieve, de la lluvia, de la luna y de la noche (1914). In design and content, Tablada's art book was a cultural artifact unlike any other. Valiendonos del ensayo de Joan Fontcuberta, El beso de Judas: Fotografia y verdad (2002) como eje de la investigacion, realizamos un breve repaso historico y semiotico de los usos especificos que se la ha dado a la fotografia desde el daguerrotipo hasta ahora y su influencia en la educacion visual de la sociedad EnglishBefore the social networks, Instagram and Pinterest, before the overexposure of our daily lives (either live or changing space-time), the documentary value of an image was subject of fear, due to the novelty of the invention, but also of admiration, because of the magic of the snapshot. As happened with pictorial portraits in which monarchs, still lifes, war exploits or mythological scenes were depicted on canvases, reactions to a photographic image have always depended on the use of the photo and the time in which it has been taken. But, the emergence of the camera meant a change in the ways of seeing, looking and projecting. The snapshots were democratized, only a camera was necessary. Thus, the historical advance that photography meant as a scientific and documentary element is still evident, palpable, observable. Photography helps us show how we see what we see, it gives us recognition and knowledge, memory and identity. Using the essay by Joan Fontcuberta, El beso de Judas: fotografia y verdad (2002) as the thrust of the investigation, we briefly historical and semiotic review the uses that have been given to photography from the daguerreotype until now and its influence on the visual education of society.

Abstract This article gathers the key contributions of visual studies in the study of cartography, and its relations with critical cartography and colonial studies. Coming from a critique of the harlean method, the possibilities of a hybrid methodology in the analysis of these documents are highlighted, one that incorporates its visual and textual aspects. Though the analysis of a plane for the Paraguay governance towards the mid-17th century, we exercise an approach to these documents that can speak not only for its visual or textual content, but for the regime of visuality of which they were part, and the role this regime assigned to both indigenous and non-indigenous groups.

EnglishImages are a necessary prerequisite for the commercialization of architecture (Puelles Romero 2006) and not just a tool for its teaching and communication. The generation, production and contemporary distribution of these images is regulated by a sort of pre-established aesthetic consensus that is socially agreed in an inadvertently manner (Ranciere in Gomez and Arcos-Palma 2014, Brea 2007, Buck-Morss 2004). The complexities originated in the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the images, and the diffuse relationship that architects and their clients establish with them through the new digital media, hinders interpretation and transmission of traditional disciplinary values. This publication presents a transdisciplinary theoretical framework which is intended to recognize the conditioning of the aesthetic experience (Puelles Romero 2006, Ranciere 2011), conceptually define the contemporary digital image as opposed to the notion of "traditional" art (Brea 2007, Buck-Morss 2004) and rehearse some reflexive work strategies with architectural images.

The school priorities are growing increasingly apart from the integral formation of the individual, and efforts are being concentrated on the economical preparation of the young. New ways of teaching and the resurgence of forgotten pedagogies can remind us of the primordial meanings of education. Under the perspective of new ways of thinking education we find the queer pedagogy, a manner of education inspired by the homonymous theory that analyzes and experiences sexuality and/or gender as fluid, and not binary. Queer pedagogy does not ignore the diversity of sexual manifestations, but avoids the binary way of understanding gender and culture; it is an education that brings differences into the daily life of the classroom. Libertarian pedagogy finds its theoretical inspiration in the anarchist thinking and practice of many authors, the socialist libertarian movement being the most frequently cited amongst educators. The guiding principles of anarchist pedagogy are: liberty, autonomy, creativity and solidarity - and furthermore, integral education, which proposes a learning that embraces all aspects of the human being (intellectual, social, emotional, and motor), and in which the interests and individuality of the students are valued. In this pedagogy freedom is synonymous with social harmony. Within the sphere of education in visual culture, a concept that widens the contents usually dealt with in art/education with contemporary and daily life cultural manifestations, new forms of teaching afford the student a less predetermined way of understanding the world and him/herself.

Observing the educational spaces reduced to a functionalism that sees art as a way to make school life as "adornment" in civic or folk school festivities and teachersisolated from the ferocity with which results are required in other competences consideredessential and in view of the results of standardized national tests and assessments, we can see that subjectivity has not always found its place in teaching practice and when this happens it is being restricted and limited with the absence of a deeper experience. However, thinking of the child as a subject in its entirety, that is, as a being who interacts and is formed in a world full of culture, knowledge, and values, but which at the same time constitutes an active and transforming subject, producer of culture and produced by her, our research proposal is an investigation centered on two moments and four chapters. An object of historical and social investigation that broadly reflects the structure that generates cultural values in the formation of the identity of the Brazilian people, the evolution of pedagogical thinking in relation to the teaching of arts and visual culture and the legislation that includes the teaching of art in the school curriculum for the past fifty years; the views and versions of child development and thought theorists and the core of the analysis intended in this work: the concepts of literacy and visual literacy, biologism and image analysis. We reflect on the mechanisms that help children in the communication and expression of their own understanding and human understanding, based on possible democratic, decolonizing, and intersectional dialogues, so that this child can nurture their cultural repertoire and develop skills that involve their sense critical and creativity, and finally, systematizing this knowledge through reading, writing and reflection on its enjoyment. Finally, reports of some visualities and experiences applied to the daily life of a class of the first year of elementary school in a municipal public school in Fortaleza/CE. It is believed that the result will enable a critical reflection on the ways or mediations for the construction of a look that develops in the subjects the imagery and imaginary capacity and the sensitivity in terms of perception of the subtleties of the world, as well as their competence in the informative sphere, cultural-historical relationships between artistic productions and reading the world.

In this article, I propose a relationship between the modern notion of ruin and a set of specific photographic representations of New York City during the first two weeks of impact from the Covid-19 pandemic. The body of images analyzed is composed of a group of pictures published on the front page of The New York Times during March 2020. This set of pictures has been chosen as representative of a photographic genre that I call «pictures of what is not there», characterized by the depiction of city landmarks emptied of people as a direct consequence of the pandemic. To analyze the common aspects of the aforementioned genre and the depictions of ruins popularized in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries —the early modern period— I resort to Aby Warburg’s notion of «visual survivals'', identifying anachronistic cultural recurrences that are key to our reflection upon the present moment.

The objective of this research is to expose and investigate the production of the visual universe of the artist Márcio Vetromila. The dissertation presents a study on the process of creating works in Fan-Art created by this Brazilian artist. Fan-art appears as the main theme of the research, defined as a visual medium inspired by well-known characters, brands, costumes, items or works, provided by third parties or the public, in addition to the author's creative domains. As a result, the research demonstrates the positioning of Fan-art in the Fandom universe, providing a poetic and dissertative approach to the process of creating a work in Fan-Art. AbstractThe paper discusses the study of visual culture based on historical inventories, wills and sharing documents, as well as the location and analysis of sub-existing examples in museum institutions. To this end, we sought subsidies and pointed as the main example, the studies and methodology used by bahian art historian Maria Helena Ochi Flexor in the publication entitled The Bahian Furniture: 18th and 19th Centuries (1970) and its reissues, Brazilian Furniture- Bahia (1978) and Bahian Furniture (2009). Thus, we find that the documents are very rich sources for understanding various social aspects, in particular the furniture, the current artistic styles and the common materials employed.

Estos la replicaran a su vez en las aulas de los mas pequenos, garantizando el fortalecimiento de la instruccion en aspectos sociales cuotidianos a traves de las imagenes EnglishThis article is part of a research project linked to a doctoral thesis study in which we explain questions of a theoretical nature that relate Visual Culture and ICT with arts education in the Faculty of Teaching of the University of Valencia. We intend to promote the relevance of this concept, not too widespread in classrooms and in society, in order to leave a dent in future teachers, students and critical citizens. A society invaded by images requires agents capable of deciphering the messages that underlie them. But it is not only the facet of consumers (critics) of images that promotes Visual Culture; A critical and postmodern curriculum will value production, focus our students as protagonists of their own micro stories. The presentation of the Visual Culture concept through various reference authors will help to re-understand their understanding and dimension in order to make it present in the arts education of future teachers. These will be replicated in turn in the classrooms of the little ones, guaranteeing the strengthening of instruction in daily social aspects through images.

In September 1928 was held in Buenos Aires the First National Book Exhibition, an event that agglutinated much of the discussions around the advancement of the publishing industry in the 1920’s, while representing a significant milestone for the consolidation of graphic arts in Argentina. In the first decades of the XXth century, diverse institutional initiatives gradually shaped a tradition of engraving as a “book art”, allied to literary illustration. The Exhibition collaborated to a large extent with this process: it assigned a space for an engraving and luxury editions exhibition, and it counted with the attendance of a special commission of illustrators, formed by Adolfo Bellocq and Alfredo Guido, among others, who worked intensely as promoters of engraving trade from both artistic and pedagogical practice. Furthermore, the strategy that was used to promote the event had a certain tradition in graphic arts: the artistic poster contest. We propose to analyze this exhibition in its aspects related to the circulation of images and ideas around the book like an object as its own right and, particularly, the early tensions related to graphic arts within the Argentine publishing industry., Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación

If we can state that certain architectural production currently finds its origin and explicit accommodation in the field of the exhibition, it is even more logical -considering the unavoidable visual culture- to assert that the images of architecture prevail autonomously over the architecture they represent, becoming independent of the strictly disciplinary and exhibited illuminated in the aura of the artistic on the walls of a museum. To explore this argument in line with the subject from the current Ra’s issue, we will review eight exhibitions, and their corresponding catalogues, held in different museums and art galleries from 1982 to 2018, and focused on exploring architectural photographic representation and its translations to and from artistic practices. We aim not just to make an exhaustive review of this reality, but to extract from its analysis a contemporary critical reading of its potentialities and interpretations.

EnglishIn contemporary culture, cyberspace is presented as a complex territory that enables unprecedented representational practices regarding the identity/otherness relationship through the digital mediation of the cognitive, corporeal, emotional and linguistic-communicative dimensions –dimensions semiotically potentiated to capture the constitutive tension between the I and the alterity. Based on the studies on digital face (Leone 2018) and on negotiation of emotions through emoji (Danesi 2016), as well as the specific connection between player, avatar and the virtual world proposed by video games, this article intends to suggest keys of interpretation in the face of the new semiotic possibilities of cyberspace, observing the issue of identity/otherness.

In the late fifteenth century the theme of folly broke into the narration of power through various narratives that used different textual expressions and visual images as rhetorical elements. These discourses covered a variety of heterogeneous fields, from medical to legal, social and political, as well as to the critical reformer and the religious counter-reformer. This paper analyzes how these images and their speech were configured in the Modern Age in connection with the dialectic among the way in which madness acquired iconographic category and its real life. The paper analyzes this process through the ridicule clothes, which the mad was forced to wear when he was admitted to certain hospitals, and dress maskes, as the jester or the baffoon. This work proposes an exploration into the mechanisms that converted the visual and textual representation of folly in a topos with moralizing dimension, and extremely useful as a pedagogical tool to indoctrinate to the illiterate popular urban masses from the power.
