El taller del artista como preludio del espacio expositivo de la obra es una aproximación a ese vínculo existente entre la instalación de la obra de arte y su lugar de creación; se centra fundamentalmente en el caso de la escultura de los siglos XX y XXI. Busca comprender la dinámica de la puesta en espacio del objeto dentro de su proceso creativo, y el trabajo espacial que el artista desarrolla en torno a la obra, en paralelo a su producción en el taller y a su puesta en escena en la exposición. En la investigación, se analiza una serie de creadores y sus talleres, y abarca un periodo que va de 1900 a 2020. Así, este estudio de casos múltiples permite establecer relaciones y vínculos entre ellos, a modo de constelación. Busca demostrar las hipótesis de que, para determinados artistas, la instalación de la pieza forma parte de su fase de producción; que su definición y control comienza en el lugar de creación y continúa en su puesta en exposición, y que, en el fondo, esa espacialidad otorgada por el artista forma parte de su esencia y significado. El estudio se estructura en cuatro capítulos, ilustrados por varios artistas y sus talleres, que representan no sólo cuatro conceptos de lugar de creación, sino también diferentes maneras de aproximarse espacialmente con la obra; en los cuales el ámbito del taller y la obra son dos actores que se relacionan de diferente una manera: El primer capítulo, el taller-factoría, analiza los talleres de Auguste Rodin –como caso de estudio–, y la Factory de Andy Warhol, y cierra con una breve reflexión sobre las industrias artísticas contemporáneas, representadas por figuras como J. Koons, D. Hirst o T. Murakami. Estas factorías de creación, que bien pudieran entroncar con esos lugares de creación que, desde el Renacimiento, que sirvieran para la producción artística colectiva y el aprendizaje de las artes, posee gran cantidad de ayudantes y de talleres especializados para las diferentes fases de la creación y producción de la obra. Parte de su espacio es abierto de nuevo al público – a modo de antigua bottega – para introducir el mercado del arte: se convierte en un lugar donde mostrar las piezas, en el marco o vitrina de la obra, en el cual las funciones de difusión y exhibición de la obra son una fase más del proceso artístico. El segundo capítulo, sobre el taller-obra-de-arte, penetra en los talleres de Alexander Calder y Marcel Duchamp, y el taller del Impasse Ronsin de Constantin Brancusi como caso paradigmático, y, como ejemplo más contemporáneo, el de Bruce Nauman. En este modelo, los límites entre la obra de arte y el propio espacio del taller, así como la producción y exhibición artística se disuelven. El lugar de creación se transforma en un entorno global, donde las obras de arte y el espacio conforman un todo; un conjunto indisociable que pasa a ser una obra de arte en sí mismo. El taller-laboratorio analiza los talleres de Jorge Oteiza, Louise Bourgeois, y –como caso de estudio– el taller de la calle Hippolyte Maindron de Alberto Giacometti; con el breve estudio de los talleres de Anselm Kiefer, como ejemplo actual de este modelo. En todos ellos, el espacio de trabajo evoluciona junto a la creación y el taller se convierte en un campo de pruebas donde contenedor y contenido progresan en paralelo a la producción artística; donde la obra va conformándose y encontrando su lugar en este proceso artístico. El taller-expandido parte de ese concepto de estudio vacío –planteado por Marcel Duchamp–, y del post-studio –de Robert Smithson o Daniel Buren–, con el análisis de los lugares de creación de Gordon Matta-Clark, el taller desmaterializado –de Sol LeWitt y las Guerrilla Girls–, o el taller-plataforma de Ai Weiwei –como caso de estudio–, con un breve análisis de otros dos ejemplos contemporáneos como los lugares de creación de Thomas Hirschhorn y Doris Salcedo. Estos modelos presentan la puesta en crisis del taller tradicional, en consonancia con esa desmaterialización del objeto artístico. Donde los artistas utilizan múltiples lugares de creación, y el concepto de taller como espacio físico se abre hacia el exterior, multiplicando sus formas y relaciones espaciales: un espacio objetualizado por la propia obra; la cual evoluciona de la forma al lugar, e integra al público en la materialización de la creación. Los diferentes lugares de creación visitados a lo largo de este estudio muestran el taller y la exposición como unos contextos donde el artista no sólo trabaja la instalación de la obra, sino que modela su propia espacialidad y el espacio en que se inserta. Así, producción e instalación de la obra podrían ser consideradas dos caras del mismo fenómeno de creación. Por todo ello, podemos afirmar que, en estos casos analizados, la espacialidad es una característica intrínseca a la propia obra, que forma parte de su dimensión plástica, y que, a su vez, genera un encuentro físico y emocional con el observador. ---------------------------------ABSTRACT---------------------------------- The artist’s workshop as a prelude of the artwork exhibition space attempts to explain the connection between the display of art and the place where it was created, and focuses essentially on the sculpture of the 20th and 21st century. This study aims to understand the dynamics of the act of placing a work of art into space within the creative process, and the spatial labour that the artist develops during its production both at the creation place and at the public exhibition. The analysis focuses on different relevant artists and their workshops or studios, and covers the period between 1900 and 2020; a compilation of multiple cases that, like a constellation, enable relationships and connections between them. The research attempts to demonstrate that, for some artists, the display of an art object is part of the production process; that its definition and control begin at the creation place and continue when it is installed at the exhibition, and that, ultimately, that spatiality given by the artist is part of its essence and meaning. The research is structured in four chapters, illustrated by various artists, that represent not only four concepts of creation place but also the different approach to the spatial relationship with the artwork; of them, the studio and the piece of art are the actors that relate in different ways: The first chapter, the workshop-factory, analyses Auguste Rodin’s workshops -as a case study- and Andy Warhol’s Factory, and finishes with a brief approach to the contemporary artistic industries represented by figures like J. Koons, D. Hirst or T. Murakami. These factories of creation, may well link with those places that, from the Renaissance, were used for the collective artistic production and apprenticeship, and like them possessed an important amount of assistants and workshops specialised in different phases of creation and production of the work. A part of this space is open to the public -like an ancient bottega- to introduce the art market: it turns into a place to display the creations, into the frame or showcase of the work, where promotion and exhibition are part of the artistic process. The second chapter, about the workshop-artwork, penetrates Alexander Calder’s and Marcel Duchamp’s studios and Constantin Brancusi’s Impasse Ronsin atelier as a paradigmatic case, and, as a more contemporary example, Bruce Nauman. In this model of studio, the limits between the artwork and the workspace, as well as the production and exhibition, get dissolved. The creation place turns into a global environment where the piece of art and space shape a whole; an indissociable group that becomes a work of art by itself. The third chapter, the workshop-lab, analyses Jorge Oteiza’s and Louise Bourgeois’ studios, and -as a case study- Alberto Giacometti’s Rue Hippolyte Maindron atelier; with Anselm Kiefer’s studio as a present example of this model. All of them show a workspace that creations progress parallelly to artistic production, achieving the work gradually its place in this process. The fourth chapter, the expanded-workshop, starts at the concept of empty studio -proposed by Marcel Duchamp-, and the post-studio of Robert Smithson or Daniel Buren–, together with the analysis of workspace by Gordon Matta-Clark, the immaterial workshop -Sol LeWitt and Guerrilla Girls-, or the platform-workshop of Ai Weiwei -as extended case study-, with a brief analysis of two other contemporary examples like workspaces of Thomas Hirschhorn and Doris Salcedo. These models draw the crisis of the traditional workshop, in consonance with the dematerialization of the art object. The artist uses multiple creation places, and the concept of the studio as a physical space opens up towards outside, multiplying its shapes and spatial relationships: a space objectified by the very artwork; which evolves from the form to the place, and integrates the public in the materialization of the creation. The different studios visited during this research show the workshop and the exhibition like a context where the artist not only creates the object and its display but also models the space where it is inserted. Production and installation could be considered the two faces of the same creation phenomenon. Thus, we can say that, in all of them, the spatiality is an intrinsic feature of the work of art, which is part of its plastic dimension, and, at the same time, generate a physical and emotional encounter with the observer.

Con la salida al exterior tanto de la creación de la obra contemporánea como de su lugar de producción, la relación entre el objeto y el perceptor (ese público que antes acudía a la galería, al museo) es modificada, y determinadas piezas transforman al espectador en un receptor invitado a implicarse en la producción artística. A través del recorrido por tres creaciones contemporáneas como Musée Précaire Albinet de Thomas Hirschhorn (2004), The Sichuan earthquake (2008-2015) de Ai Weiwei y Palimpsesto (2013-2017) de Doris Salcedo, este texto pretende observar esas relaciones entre la exterioridad del arte, el espectador, el entorno donde se inscribe y la sociedad donde es creada. Estos tres ejemplos muestran cómo el artista contemporáneo puede convertirse en un mediador, en un posibilitador de situaciones o acciones que devienen obras de arte; su taller en una agencia de medios que capta y redistribuye, y su creación en un arte relacional que busca implicarse para ser utilizado en beneficio de lo común. ---------- ABSTRACT---------- When the creation of a contemporary artwork comes out, as well as its place of production, the spectator is often involved as they can turn into a special guest of the artistic production. Analysing three contemporary artworks, Musée Précaire Albinet by Thomas Hirschhorn (2004); The Sichuan earthquake (2008-2015) by AiWeiwei, and Palimpsesto (2013-2017) by Doris Salcedo, this text aims to study the existing rapport between art exteriority, spectator, environment and society. All of three show the potentiality of contemporary artist becoming a mediator, a person able to incite people to be a part of its work of art. In that case, the artist’s workshop turns into the agency managing the process, and the work produced into relational art made to be use for everyone.

El taller es un lugar donde el artista crea y produce la obra, pero también un entorno controlado íntegramente por él, que le permite estar presente e intervenir su forma de mostrarla. En la galería, el museo, la obra queda fijada, inmovilizada. La mano del artista ya no está junto a sus creaciones, pudiendo hacer olvidar que ciertas piezas fueron concebidas como un conjunto o entorno determinado, o incluso generadas con un movimiento. Por el contrario, en el taller, con el artista, la obra puede seguir su proceso; aun cuando se la supone terminada, cada vez que su creador la toca, es activada de nuevo; recupera su potencial, vuelve a la vida. En el texto que sigue, tres conocidas obras, El Circo (1926–31) de Alexander Calder, Leda (1926) de Constantin Brancusi y la Rueda de Bicicleta (1913-1964) de Marcel Duchamp, son analizadas desde el contexto del taller, de su puesta en escena y de su movimiento. Tres obras maestras en el corazón del lugar de creación que modifican su significado por su movimiento, que con su acción participan del conjunto del taller del artista. ----------ABSTRACT---------- The studio – the workshop – is not only the place in which artists create and produce the work, but also a specially controlled environment formed to show naturally their own artworks. In the exhibition, in a gallery or in a museum, they could be as paralysed. Artist hands are no more there to remember that this artwork is a part of a whole, or created with a movement. Inside the studio, the artist keep on making evolving and activating their work, even if it could seem to be finished. This text analyse three famous pieces of art: The Alexander Calder’s Circus (1926-31); Leda (1926) from Costantin Brancusi, and the Marcel Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel (1913-1964). They are analysed from the point of view of their movement and staging in the context of their own place of production. They are three masterpieces that change their own meanings while moving inside the studio; a place that they also contribute to create.

El taller es un espacio funcional donde el artista crea y produce la obra; marco y materia de la propia creación. Esta relación entre taller y obra puede ser tan estrecha que ambos evolucionan en paralelo motivando cambios estéticos, materiales y espaciales; situando el proceso plástico en la configuración misma del entorno creativo, lo cual añade un carácter performativo al lugar de creación. A través del análisis de los talleres de cuatro artistas como Piet Mondrian, Kurt Schwitters, Louise Bourgeois o Anselm Kiefer, este artículo tratará de demostrar la influencia y la íntima relación entre estos lugares de producción y la obra de arte; así como entre la concepción plástica del artista y su filosofía y modo de vida, como un todo; formando un grupo indisociable que modifica el estatus de la obra individual y le añade un valor de conjunto. Mostrando una perspectiva diferente sobre la concepción y significado de la obra, y su lugar de creación. ----------ABSTRACT---------- The artist’s studio/workshop is a functional place for creation, and also the frame and a part of the raw material of their work. This relationship between the work of art and its production place is sometimes so close that their evolutions run together; as a matter of it, aesthetic, material and spatial changes are incited in both directions. In that case, the work’s creation process takes place in an architectural making of, and the workshop turns into a performative place. Through analysis of the workshops of Piet Mondrian, Kurt Schwitters, Louise Bourgeois or Anselm Kiefer this research will show the influence and the close relationship that exists between this production places and the work of art; but also between the artist’s work, their philosophy and way of life, as a whole, between art, life an environment.
