Archives are not straightforward repositories of history. Instead, they authorize which stories are remembered. In this article we apply the insights of cultural geographers and other influential scholars of archives to analyze the political dimensions of archiving activist histories. A small group of antiprison activists produced a personal archive during the 1990s and 2000s documenting brutality behind bars and efforts to dismantle solitary confinement in California prisons. After being deemed too dangerous to be opened to the public by university archivists, and without a permanent home, the papers were at risk of being lost to history. By presenting our work building this archive, we analyze the limitations of institutional libraries and the vital role played by individuals and independent institutions willing to preserve dangerous papers, and we show how preserving histories of state violence and opposition can become a deeply personal and risky endeavor. The author comments on the telegrams written by Edvardas Turauskas, published in the July 2007 issue of "Darbai ir dienos." He cited that the telegrams presented were held by The Lithuanian Emigration Institute in Kaunas, Lithuania, but claimed that the Hoover Institution in Stanford, California holds the bulk of Turauskas' archives. He mentioned some of the personal correspondence of Turauskas. He added that the telegrams presented is a small but discrete file representing the quality of materials at the institute.

Anchored on the Vietnamese American Project (VAP), this essay presents the documentation of the Vietnamese American Experience through the voices of ethnic Vietnamese in Orange County, California, home to the largest concentration of this ethnic group outside Vietnam. Groundbreaking in its approach and method, VAP is an open forum that enables community assessment, self education, public memory preservation, and the first step toward understanding Vietnamese America and the Vietnamese diaspora. The cross-sectional narratives encompass transcontinental accounts of first and 1.5 generations of Vietnamese refugees and their children, and subsequently focus on their coming to terms with their second home in America, dwelling on how ethnic Vietnamese have negotiated with political turmoil, socioeconomic changes, and cultural identity. The paper, as the VAP, bridges cultural and linguistic barriers, connecting the native land and the adopted country. In short, the paper through its synthesis of the VAP: (1) gives a timely response to the urgent needs to understand and study the ethnic Vietnamese community in Orange County, providing much-needed primary data on the respective population for the ethnic communities and interdisciplinary scholarship; (2) serves as a healing process for members of the Vietnamese American community in Orange County and other victims of war; (3) sheds light onto intra- and inter-ethnic relations, fostering community consolidation, forging cross-cultural collaborations, and nurturing racial harmony; (4) contributes to an important period in American history with perspectives that are lacking in the extant literature; and (5) will conduce peace by bringing out the human experience in America's longest war. Based in the context of challenges faced by archives when managing digital projects, this article explores options of looking outside the existing expertise of archives staff to find collaborative partners. In teaming up with other departments and organizations, the potential scope of traditional archival digitization projects is expanded beyond the limits of a single institution. A case study of this principle is the collaboration between the Mark Twain Papers, the California Digital Library, and the University of California Press to develop TEI-encoded versions of elaborately annotated manuscript and published materials. Though not an example of a conventional archival digitization project, the Mark Twain Digital Project serves as a model of how to solicit and incorporate external experts into the design and execution of digitizing archival materials. The article presents information about the Urban Archives Center at California State University at Northridge, California. The Center was established in 1979 through the efforts of university faculty and concerned community organizations and leaders. The primary purpose of the Center has been to collect the historically significant records of voluntary associations and prominent citizens who have directed growth in Los Angeles County and influenced government and public thinking since the beginning of the 20th century. Major subject areas developed during the Center's first 10 years of operation include, trade, tourism, and urban development; education; minority and ethnic organizations; politics; social services; women of Los Angeles; and recreation, sports and leisure studies. The center sent out 800 questionnaires inquiring about materials being stored in union halls and administrative offices. The responses revealed the existence of a wealth of untapped historical documents as well as the willingness of many labor organizations to participate in an archival program.

Young undergraduate college students are often described as 'digital natives,' presumed to prefer living and working in completely digital information environments. In reality, their world is part-paper/part-digital, in constant transition among successive forms of digital storage and communication devices. Studying for a degree is the daily work of these young people, and effective management of paper and digital academic materials and resources contributes crucially to their success in life. Students must also constantly manage their work against deadlines to meet their course and university requirements. This study, following the ' Personal Information Management' ( PIM) paradigm, examines student academic information management under these various constraints and pressures. A total of 41 18- to 22-year-old students were interviewed and observed regarding the content, structure, and uses of their immediate working environment within their dormitory rooms. Students exhibited remarkable creativity and variety in the mixture of automated and manual resources and devices used to support their academic work. The demands of a yearlong procession of assignments, papers, projects, and examinations increase the importance of time management activities and influence much of their behavior. This article is about Clemens's early California and Hawaii notebooks (Notebooks IV–VI, Jan. 1865–Apr. 1866), which he used during the period recounted years later in approximately the last quarter of Roughing It. An illustrated reading of the notebook makes three general points: first, that Clemens used pocket notebooks and graphite pencils (the mid-nineteenth-century's portable media) to train himself to write down experience as he saw and heard it; second, that the traces left by this training process were (and are) ironic, because they visibly and comically fail to capture experience; and third, that Clemens referred to the notebooks throughout his career for their evocative gestures (as much if not more than the linguistic contents). Following readings of the notebooks that are grounded in graphite traces and their multiple afterlives in print, this article concludes by hailing their forthcoming publication online, where other scholars and general readership will be able to see their traces. Objective To examine the relationship between the numbers of people walking or bicycling and the frequency of collisions between motorists and walkers or bicyclists. The common wisdom holds that the number of collisions varies directly with the amount of walking and bicycling. However, three published analyses of collision rates at specific intersections found a non-linear relationship, such that collisions rates declined with increases in the numbers of people walking or bicycling. Data This paper uses five additional data sets (three population level and two time series) to compare the amount of walking or bicycling and the injuries incurring in collisions with motor vehicles. Results The likelihood that a given person walking or bicycling will be struck by a motorist varies inversely with the amount of walking or bicycling. This pattern is consistent across communities of varying size, from specific intersections to cities and countries, and across time periods. Discussion This result is unexpected. Since it is unlikely that the people walking and bicycling become more cautious if their numbers are larger, it indicates that the behavior of motorists controls the likelihood of collisions with people walking and bicycling. It appears that motorists adjust their behavior in the presence of people walking and bicycling. There is an urgent need for further exploration of the human factors controlling motorist behavior in the presence of people walking and bicycling. Conclusion A motorist is less likely to collide with a person walking and bicycling if more people walk or bicycle. Policies that increase the numbers of people walking and bicycling appear to be an effective route to improving the safety of people walking and bicycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The essay examines the legal history of the California and its relationship to the development of the California State Archives. The author opens the article with an examination of the enactment of the state's first statute, which provided for the founding of the archives. The article highlights the events at the Computer History Museum of Mountain View, California, for the winter quarter of 2008. Finding aids for the papers of authors including Harwood Kolsky, Gene Amdahl, and Edmund Berkeley were added to the Online Archive of California by the Museum. Also, the SAP collection was rescued from destruction by the Museum staff, and were catalogued and placed at the new offsite storage facility in Milpitas, California. An obituary for Donald Lee Stevens was also presented.

Archival collections are important in preserving our historical heritage. An example of a new archival collection in high-altitude physiology and medicine is described. Physiologists should be more aware of the historical value of primary material and should be encouraged to offer their papers to an appropriate archival repository.

Labor history sources at the Southern California Library for Social Studies and Research in Los Angeles are part of a larger collection on 20th century social and political history developed by Library founder Emil Freed. When Freed opened the Library in 1963, he brought into being an institution that would house much of the material he had collected during a lifetime on the Left and in the labor movement. The idea of a Library to preserve the history of labor and the Left took firm hold in Freed's mind in the 1950s, when Freed rescued the personal libraries of friends who, vulnerable to the repression of the Cold War era, were on the verge of destroying their political books and pamphlets. To these collections Freed added his own accumulation of documents from various struggles in which he had been closely involved: the Unemployed Councils of the 1930s, the Hollywood studio strikes of the 1940s, and the Civil Rights Congress of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Beyond the 25,000 volume book collection, of which U.S. labor history is a particular emphasis, the Library's 20,000 item pamphlet collection is a rich source for labor research.

This essay concerns an ethnographic project intended to document Latina/o traditional medicine in Los Angeles, organize the materials, and make information accessible to others. The paper describes methods and techniques for eliciting and recording the medical traditions. It presents some initial findings, discusses interview protocols as well as opportunities and challenges in obtaining information from individuals, discusses issues that arise in regard to transcription-translation and data management, and illustrates several ways of making the traditions available to different audiences. The article attempts to provide information on archives that will be of interest to academics. Potential topics of the archives range from new collections, film restorations and film festivals to accompanying documentation, such as information on holdings of the papers of corporations and individuals. The goal is to publicize ongoing activities of archives within a framework indicating their possible use to scholars. It informs that the west coast branch of the Museum of Television and Radio opened in the spring of 1996 in Beverly Hills, California. At the Ottawa SCS conference, a project of the Motion Picture/Broadcasting/Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress was previewed during a special workshop.

The Labor Archives and Research Center was established in 1985 as part of the library system of San Francisco State University. Previously, despite San Francisco's reputation as a labor town, no archival repository in Northern California had actively collected the records relating to working people and their organizations even though there was a substantial body of published scholarship on the labor history of the San Francisco Bay Area. The founding of the Center stems from the activities of three interested parties, each with a vital stake in its establishment and each essential to the effort. First, there was a dedicated group of labor leaders whose garages and closets held files, photographs, banners, and other historical material documenting their lives and local labor's past. Second, there was at San Francisco State University, a president, Paul F. Romberg, who with his close advisors recognized the importance of labor history. The third component involved the financial backing for the proposed center. A compromise has also been worked out in which the six counties surrounding San Francisco are specified in the collecting policy, and nothing from Northern California is explicitly excluded.

Aims: To describe the professional life of Edward H. Hon, MD, and the course of his academic career for the development of electronic fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring. Methods: Review of archives at the Loma Linda University related to Dr Hon's early education and medical school training, his postgraduate training at Yale University, his faculty appointments at Yale University, University of Southern California and his research accomplishment related to electronic FHR monitoring. Results: Primarily, Dr Hon advanced the clinical application of the electronic FHR monitoring, particularly during labor and delivery. Dr Hon also defined significance of FHR patterns based on years of clinical studies and astute observations. Conclusion: Currently, electronic FHR monitoring, during pregnancy and labor/delivery, has a universal application. Dr Hon's research contribution on FHR monitoring, and its impact for the welfare of mother and her unborn child, is well recognized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the Conflict Study Project conducted by the Department of Political Science at Stanford University in California. The project, which began in the autumn of 1957 as an interdisciplinary search for effective ways to study the behavior of nation-states in both conflict and community-building situations. The project, which was reorganized to include advanced graduate students during the academic year 1958 to 1959, included the collection of more than four thousand documents and the development of a close day-by-day and hour-by-hour chronology of events for the period between the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand and the beginning of World War I.

Digital editing, and digital editions in particular, will likely expand in the next few decades as a multitude of assets become digitized and made available as online collections. Background: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a nonprofit community hospital based in Los Angeles. Its history spans over 100 years, and its growth and development from the merging of 2 Jewish hospitals, Mount Sinai and Cedars of Lebanon, is also part of the history of Los Angeles. The medical library collects and maintains the hospital's photographic archive, to which retiring physicians, nurses, and an active Community Relations Department have donated photographs over the years. The collection was growing rapidly, it was impossible to display all the materials, and much of the collection was inaccessible to patrons. Case Presentation: The authors decided to make the photographic collection more accessible to medical staff and researchers by purchasing a web-based digital archival package, Omeka. We decided what material should be digitized by analyzing archival reference requests and considering the institution's plan to create a Timeline Wall documenting and celebrating the history of Cedars-Sinai. Conclusion: Within 8 months, we digitized and indexed over 500 photographs. The digital archive now allows patrons and researchers to access the history of the hospital and enables the library to process archival references more efficiently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

California is home to multiple queer community archives created by community members outside of government, academic, and public archives. These archives are maintained by the communities and are important spaces not only for the preservation of records, but also as safe spaces to study, gather, and learn about the communities' histories. This article describes the histories of three such queer community archives (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Historical Society Lavender Library, Archives, and Cultural Exchange of Sacramento, Inc.; and ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives) in order to discuss the role of activism in the community archives and implications for re-examining the role of activism to incorporate communities into the heart of archival professional work. By understanding the impetus for creating and maintaining queer community archives, archivists can use this knowledge to foster more reflective practices to be more inclusive in their archival practices through outreach, collaboration, and descriptive practices. In the earlier years of the Web, libraries focused on moving services online and building digital collections, but in recent years, libraries have emerged as key players in the world of digital publishing. Librarians possess all of the necessary skills to act as digital publishers; they join the ranks of many others who have discovered the barriers around digital publishing are lower than ever. Library-based digital publishing solutions have matured to a point that the act of digital publishing could—and should—become a new core competency for the library profession. To explore this hypothesis, the researchers offer a working definition of digital publishing and assess the key roles that traditional publishers have historically offered over time. They find that librarians already possess the requisite skills to become digital publishers, and the collaborative culture of the library profession is a strength for this new role. Examples of digital publishing from two libraries at the University of California-Berkeley offer a proof of concept. Services at these libraries include the conceptualization of overall Web site strategies, a content plan that emphasizes distinctive and original material, and special projects that promote digital publishing at the local level, even as they take advantage of campus- or system-level services. Researchers find that offering library-based Web publishing services can reinforce overall information management programs and also advance the status of libraries within their respective host organizations. This article describes a year-long application of critical information literacy theory for social-science-related library workshops. Each of these workshops had a customized section that included working with special collections and university archives. The students who participated ranged from incoming freshman to seniors at Stanford University. The curriculum development method for these workshops is based on principles of collaborative co-design. The article offers information on the Eaton Collection at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), a group of science fiction and horror novels amassed by Professor J. Lloyd Eaton during a lifetime of active fandom. The collection included thousands of first editions and by 2005, grew to more than 100,000 volumes through processes involving both careful cultivation and acquisition. The collection includes accumulated papers from Gregory Bedford, David Brin, and Anne McCaffrey, a concentrated group of Philip K. Dick texts in various languages.
