The history of architecture in Western countries and Lithuania is researched from various points of view. Such significant elements of architecture as light, color, sound, and water so far have been studied as far as their relation to the architecture of certain specific historical periods is concerned. However, up till now research of this kind was limited to deep, yet narrow, fragmented and specialized views of certain historical periods, or research projects were concerned with certain specific aspects of connections between works of architecture and metaphysical beliefs. Because of this, research of architectural history still lacks a thorough account of how metaphysical, religious, and philosophical worldviews affected the artistic expression of architecture of different periods. Without a sufficient amount of research of this kind, it is impossible to reconstruct a thoroughly consistent and more or less total view of the historical development of architecture. On the other hand, it strikes one as obvious that while the history and theory of architecture is being studied in Lithuania, we witness a lack of research work on the concepts of light, color, sound, and water that dominated during certain historic periods. Apie tokius reikšmingus architektūros elementus kaip šviesa, spalva, garsas ir vanduo yra buvę reikšmingų specializuotų studijų šių reiškinių sąveikos su vieno ar kito istorinio laikotarpio architektūros kūriniais aptarti. Tačiau iki šiol tokio pobūdžio tyrimai apsiribodavo siaurais, fragmentiškais, griežtai specializuotais žvilgsniais į atskirų kultūros istorijos tarpsnių architektūrą arba tokio buvo pabrėžiami tik tam tikri, labai specifiniai sąveikos tarp architektūros kūrinių ir to meto pasaulėžiūros aspektai. Todėl nėra pakankamai ištyrinėta atskirais istorijos tarpsniais vyravusių metafizinių, religinių ir filosofinių pažiūrų įtaka meninei architektūros raiškai. Nesant tokių tyrimų, neįmanoma adekvačiai rekonstruoti architektūros istorinės raidos vaizdo. Nagrinėjant architektūros istorijos ir teorijos problematiką Lietuvoje, akivaizdu, kad labiausiai trūksta darbų, kuriuose atskirais kultūros istorijos tarpsniais vyravusių šviesos, spalvos, garso ir vandens sampratų įtaka architektūros meno raidai būtų įvertinta sintetiškai, apibendrintai ir nuosekliai, pasitelkus idėjų istorijos tyrimo metodologiją bei tarpdisciplinių kultūrologinių tyrimų analizės principus. In Lithuanian architecturology, the work is new by its broader and deeper approach to contemporary wooden architecture. The dissertation has analyzed the objects of contemporary wooden architecture, which so far have been discussed only in articles of descriptive character or have not been analyzed or published at all. By revealing the significance of wood in Lithuanian culture, historical development of wooden architecture, the importance of heritage of wooden buildings and ethnic features present in such heritage, the work emphasizes the distinctive place of woodwork in contemporary Lithuanian architecture and culture now influenced by the globalization phenomena. The work deals in more detail with the relationship between traditional and innovative morphologies, and their interlinks in modern architecture. It emphasizes structural and artistic possibilities for the use of wood in contemporary Lithuanian architecture. The work discusses the international experience while revealing important peculiarities of wooden architecture as a phenomenon, which have been lost in Lithuania together with discontinuation of the tradition of wooden architecture during the last occupation of the country. Disertacijoje išanalizuoti šiuolaikinės medinės architektūros objektai, kurie iki šiol buvo aptarti tik pavieniuose aprašomuosiuose straipsniuose arba išvis niekur nenagrinėti ir nepublikuoti. Tyrime atskleidžiant medžio reikšmę Lietuvos kultūroje, medinės architektūros istorinę raidą, medinių statinių paveldo svarbą, jo etninius bruožus, pabrėžiama išskirtinė kūrybos iš medžio vieta dabartinėje Lietuvos architektūroje ir kultūroje, veikiamoje pasaulio globalizacijos reiškinių. Išsamiau nagrinėjamas tradicinės ir novatyvios morfologijos santykis bei tarpusavio sąsajos šiuolaikinėje architektūroje. Išryškintos medžio panaudos konstruktyvinės ir meninės galimybės nūdienos Lietuvos architektūroje. Darbe remtasi pasaulio patirtimi atskleidžiant svarbius medinės architektūros reiškinio ypatumus, kurie prarasti Lietuvoje nutrūkus medinės architektūros tradicijai per paskutinę okupaciją. Šis tyrimas leidžia geriau suvokti visuomenės primirštos ir neretai skeptiškai vertinamos medžio kaip medžiagos vertę, dabartines galimybes architektūroje. Darbas gali būti teoriniu pagrindu tobulinant architektūros, dizaino mokymo programas bei kai kuriuos formalius reikalavimus medinės architektūros projektavimui ir statybai.

The subject matter of the research is architectural competitions in Lithuania to begin with their origin (end of the 18th century) up to the present times (2010). The dissertation aims at disclosing the significance of architectural competitions to art of architecture in Lithuania, improvement of architects’ professional excellence and public meaning of competitive selection, as well as analyzing the preconditions for improvement of the competition system. The following tasks have been raised and formulated: 1. to explore the genesis of architectural competitions and review the historical development of architectural competitions in Lithuania starting from its origins to the present day; 2. based on specific examples of architectural competitions in Lithuania, to analyze the main types of competitions and their purposes, disclose their peculiarities and meaning; 3. to perform the critical analysis on organization process of architectural competitions in Lithuania (preparation of requirements, rules, involvement of society to the design process and evaluation) and further existence and quality of the competition winning design projects; and 4. to disclose the peculiarities of public, architectural and professional significance of creative competitions. Šio darbo tikslas yra atskleisti architektūros konkursų reikšmę Lietuvos architektūros menui ir architektų profesinio meistriškumo augimui, visuomeninę konkursinės atrankos prasmę, išnagrinėti konkursų sistemos tobulinimo prielaidas. Tam suformuluoti šie uždaviniai: 1. Ištirti architektūros konkursų genezę, apžvelgti Lietuvos architektūros konkursų istorinę raidą nuo jų atsiradimo iki šių dienų. 2. Remiantis konkrečiais Lietuvos architektūros konkursų pavyzdžiais, išanalizuoti pagrindinius konkursų tipus ir tikslus, atskleisti jų ypatumus ir prasmę. 3. Atlikti Lietuvos architektūros konkursų organizavimo bei konkursuose laimėjusių projektų būties ir kokybės kritinę analizę. 4. Atskleisti kūrybinių konkursų visuomeninės, architektūrinės ir profesinės reikšmės Lietuvoje ypatybes. Baigiamajame darbe ne tik nagrinėjama J. Šeiboko kūryba, bet ir perteikiamos architekto įžvalgos skirtingų sociokultūrinių laikmečių kontekste, nušviečiama J. Šeiboko pedagoginė veikla, pateikiami kolegų komentarai analizuojamais klausimais. Darbas atskleidžia architekto kūrybinius principus, J. Šeiboko kūrybos vertę ir jai kylančias išlikimo grėsmes. Yra daroma išvada, kad J. Šeiboko kūriniai - vertingi architektūriniu, meniniu požiūriu ir tai yra svarus indėlis į šiuolaikinę Lietuvos architrektūrą. Baigiamojo darbo įvade aprašomas darbo aktualumas ir ištirtumas, tikslas, tyrimo uždaviniai, įvardijami moksliniai nagrinėjimo metodai. Pirmajame skyriuje pateikiama J. Šeiboko kūrybos analizė – aprašomi ne tik ryškiausi, bet ir ne tokie žinomi J. Šeiboko architektūros objektai, atskleidžiamas jo kūrybinės asmenybės vystymasis. Antrame skyriuje į skirtingų laikmečių sociokultūrinį, politinį kontekstą stengtasi pažvelgti ne tik remiantis literatūroje dėstomais faktais, bet ir gretinant juos su J. Šeiboko architekto ir pedagogo įžvalgomis. Darbo pabaigoje formuluojami apibendrinimai. Darbą sudaro: įvadas, du skyriai, apibendrinimai, J. The final thesis approaches the creation of the architect J. Šeibokas as well as his insights in the context of divers sociocultural periods. In addition, the pedagogical activity of the architect is described and the comments of the colleagues are presented in correspondence to some analysed points. The Master paper reflects the essential principles of architect‘s creation and similarly proves the value of J. Šeibokas‘ creation and its survival threats. The main conclusion is, that the works of J. Šeibokas are architecturally and creatively valuable. Consequently, the creation of this architect is a weighty contribution to the contemporary Lithuanian architecture. The introduction of this research work defines the relevance and the exploration level of the Master thesis, the object, the goals and the methods of research used. The introduction also indicates the sources coherent to the research object. The first part of the Master paper is the analysis of J. Šeibokas‘ creation, where not only his most outstanding architectural objects are approached, but also less significant works, thus the development of the architects creative „self“ is revealed. In the second chapter the author of the final thesis intended to take a broader look to the divers sociocultural-political context with reference to J.
