Abstract Architecture education was not theorized on until Donald Schön’s contributions in the 1980s. Since then, his pedagogical ideas have dominated professional training. However, the model has come under severe criticism in the last decade, especially for presenting the student as a passive observer instead of as an active learner. This study delves into styles of learning as a way to understand the individual traits that influence learning in our students. It also presents an action research that leads to a didactic where students transit autonomously through the design process. These didactics, that include the body (kinesthetics), directed at students who prefer active and sensory styles of learning, have been a good doorway into the concepts and language that make up an architect. Additionally, the trend that showed difficulties in the design studio performance of the active group has been reversed.

This paper will discuss the role of data visualization in the field of medical science and the relationships between health research and graphic sciences. Graphic representation allows the survey and the visualization of intangible phenomena. For this reason, computer graphics and technologically innovative imaging are now gaining a central role in all the disciplines based on the analysis of phenomena that occur in the territory and from which decision making depends. Thus, knowledge, techniques and tools of the graphic sciences are increasingly being asked to contribute to interdisciplinary research. Health data visualization can be a useful tool to reveal new insights on the spatial patterns of disease spread, mainly in the study of risk factors for diseases considered “environmental” because a considerable part of their spread can be attributed to environmental factors so that their distribution patterns result strongly associated with the spatially heterogeneous environment to which they are referred. The simultaneous visualization of health data with environmental data obtained from different sources can further the understanding of environmental-health linkages and can generate new hypotheses to be tested in future research. Disease mapping and environmental risk assessment using digital geospatial data resources are now established analytical tools in both human and veterinary public health. Participatory GIS, Volunteered Geographic Information communities as OpenStreetMap, Virtual Globes, online live tracking dashboards and other computer-assisted applications made it possible to translate datasets from different sources and users into maps easily understandable from the public. The use of these tools in geospatial health has been firmly established as a useful tool for collating, exploring, visualizing and graphically analyzing health data. As a result, new approaches aimed to visualize, describe and explain the spatial patterns of diseases are being developed in different research fields, that will be analyzed in this paper.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.23.2019.12

When drawing a new urban plan, architects and town planners try, with sufficient skill, to represent what exists and what the new designed reality will be like. They are forced to disregard what they feel to be important in the representation and specify what is and what is not meaningful in the designed planning and how it will be shown on the drawing. If a plan specifies this capacity for abstraction and synthesis of the urban planning task it is without a doubt the floor plan drawing. This drawing simultaneously materializes the act of designing the city and an exercise in communication and graphic language that explains, and at the same time expresses, what has been designed. To manage to produce images capable of clearly communicating the results of the urban design process thus becomes a fundamental task of the planner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[EN] The linear landscape has historically been rendered in pictures that show a continuous river, a road or train tracks, or by elevations and views depicting a developed space. The problem of presenting such extensive spaces has generated multiple forms of visualisation which comprise a heterogeneous whole. In this article, different modes of presenting the linear landscape are classified according to viewing dynamics and the role of the observer. Changes affecting the roles played by the author, presenter and observer in the various processes described are also examined.

The Mohr diagram is one of the most powerful and efficient graphical methods in stress/strain analysis and structural design. However, it cannot be used to determine the direction of the shear stress or shear strain for three-dimensional states. In this paper, a three-dimensional figure is given to describe the variation of normal and shear stress on different inclined planes at one point. Based on a mathematical formulation, the direction of the total shear stress is determined, and a graphical method is proposed to represent both the magnitude and the direction of the normal stress and shear stress together. The two-dimensional, precise and rigorous representation of a concrete physical reality goes through establishing, as a founding act, a scale on which to structure the system of spatial references of a map or a plan. In disciplinary areas such as architecture or urban planning, the daily use of this tool requires a mastery of its qualities that, traditionally, seemed consolidated around agreed scales as optimal for the representation of the constructive detail, the architectural object, the figure of the city or the vast territory. However, the appearance of new assisted drawing technologies and, above all, the growing documentary consultation through the screen have led to an obvious disruption in learning methods. Thus, this research explores, from the classroom and during a continuous period of fifteen years, the cognitive and didactic potentials associated with the scale as a tool for representation, comparison and learning. [EN] The work presented below is part of the results of a research project developed at Polytechnic University of Madrid. The Architecture Competitions reveal the aspirations of the participants to present the most attractive proposal that will gain the attention of the jury, in addition to responding to the problems and motivations that originate the call. The graphic communication becomes the link between theviewer and the foreshadowing of something that could become a constructed project. By analysing the graphic instruments used in several calls for architectural competitions supervised by the COAM, the aim of this paper is to show the role of visual communication in reading and evaluating a proposal. The tool of the diagram allows to visualize and find the graphic variables most used by the competitors, as well as to specify which of them are drawn on the awarded projects., [ES] El artículo que se expone a continuación es parte del resultado de un trabajo de investigación realizado en la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

[EN] The present work aims to investigate and analyze the evolution of graphic representation and the different techniques used by different architects, in order to make the plans of a summer pavilion. To do so, in the first part, some aspects such as drawings, planimetry, perspectives or models by four different architects are going to be broadly analyzed. There will be a detailed graphical study of the representation of one pavilion per architect. Then, all this input will be reflected in a study of the summer pavilion, which belongs to the complex of Masía de la Cruz Orero in Segorbe. It will start with the analysis of the location and the graphical data provided by the current owners. This analysis will be followed by the production of the pavilion's plans. These representations scope to transmit what the place has to offer. Similarly, they strive to show its performance in a way in which anyone is able to understand the graphical discourse proposed. Moreover, the different graphical techniques and its formalization are explained. Last, a series of conclusions are disclosed in which those important points of the work are highlighted. Also, the importance acquired by graphical representation in architecture is raised.

This paper addresses the graphic representation in the competitions of ideas in the “Celebration of Cities” series, and attempts to clarify what the ideas were in such projects. In search of definitions to clarify the use of the term “ideas”, there was an analysis of some classifications of architectural and urban design competitions, which were made by representatives of social classes and based on the documents from the “Celebration of Cities” series, and which reveal the sense in which they used that term. A subsequent analysis was made of the panels selected for the regional and international awards in the three competitions held, through a cataloguing file, based on the graphic representation, in order to detect recurring elements among the proposals. From the comparative analysis, the study proceeds to define typologies that could identify forms of presentation and common content.

[EN]Nowadays, field surveying has very accurate instruments that allow a substantial speeding up of the processes of topographic measurement, maximizing the information that they provide and obtaining features that represent the objects with a high precision. That is the case of the High- Definition Survey with Terrestrial Laser Scanner. This paper shows the application of such tools to some historical buildings in Galicia. The results have contributed to create a database valuable both as graphic representations, as part of the analytical processes of the architectonic record, and as three-dimensional reconstructions of the different phases of construction of the buildings under analysis.

While the primary objective of design education is essentially teaching how to design, the process of understanding a design product is another important and obvious goal of design education. Here, the aim is to find out how the capacity of the students to design relates to their capacity to understand and evaluate design. In a survey done in the freshman studio, students were asked to diagrammatic ally express the design ideas of the projects they were shown, to criticize the projects verbally and to grade them. Later, the diagrams produced by the students, their verbal evaluations of the projects, the grades they have assigned to these projects, and their own projects' jury grades are compared to find out the interaction among these variables. © 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
