As David Noel Freedman has noted, Albright was no historian (1989: 33). In spite of his styling himself an Orientalist, Albright was probably primarily a historian of religion, and specifically of Israelite religion. True, he was an acknowledged master of many skills in the ancillary disciplines that form ancient Near Eastern studies, and he was convinced that by mastering all these diverse skills one could better understand the ancient Near East (Albright 1936). Nonetheless, it seems that Albright's vast array of interests were secondary to his goal of illuminating the Bible, its history and religion by reading the unfolding scroll of history (Albright 1957: 400).
