Conocer el uso de las plantas es crucial para entender la economía y la dieta de las comunidades del pasado. Para avanzar en el conocimiento sobre la agricultura y el uso de recursos vegetales en sitios arqueológicos, este artículo propone el análisis de almidones como una metodología que permite ampliar los datos arqueobotánicos procedentes de sitios arqueológicos. Se presentan los resultados del análisis de almidones realizados con muestras obtenidas de 6 artefactos de molienda y 14 recipientes cerámicos procedentes del yacimiento de Numancia (Garray, Soria) durante el final de la Edad del Hierro y la romanización. A través de esta metodología, se ha logrado identificar almidones de Triticeae (Triticum spp. y Hordeum vulgare), avena (Avena spp.), bellota (Quercus ilex) y leguminosas (Fabaceae). Estos datos corroboran el consumo de cereales y recursos de los bosques adyacentes a Numancia, en una estrategia mixta de cultivo y recolección estacional. Además de la identificación taxonómica, la presencia de granos gelatinizados constata el uso del fuego en el procesamiento y preparación de alimentos. Por último, la identificación de los mismos taxones en todos los períodos indica una continuidad agroecológica entre las ocupaciones celtibéricas y la etapa de romanización en Numancia. Ascertaining the use of plants is crucial to understanding the past communities’ economy and diet. Taking agriculture and plant resources knowledge forward, this article proposes a starch analysis as a methodology to expand archaeobotanical data from archaeological sites. This paper presents the results of a starch analysis on samples obtained from 6 grinding artefacts and 14 ceramic vessels from Numantia (Garray, Soria) dating from the Late Iron Age and Early Roman period. Through this methodology, it has been possible to identify starches from Triticeae (Triticum spp. and Hordeum vulgare), oats (Avena spp.), acorns (Quercus ilex), and legumes (Fabaceae). These data corroborate the consumption of cereals and resources from the forests adjacent to Numantia in a mixed strategy for seasonal gathering and farming. In addition to taxonomic identification, the presence of gelatinised grains confirms the use of fire in food processing and preparation. Microremains entrapped in dental calculus are being used as a source of information to address a number of archeological questions. However, current laboratory procedures may affect the recovery of microremains and this issue has not been thoroughly investigated. This study involved the analysis of dental calculus from five Chalcolithic individuals from El Mirador cave (Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain) from a methodological perspective. Two sample processing protocols published in the archeological literature were used for this purpose, and results were compared to the El Mirador archaeobotanical record published elsewhere. Analyzed as a whole, the microremains found in the dental calculus samples are consistent with a population immersed in a farming economy, although they are not representative of the richness of the archaeobotanical record of the site. Furthermore, the two protocols delivered different results, in terms of the number of microremains identified, the time required for analysis, and associated contamination problems. This data indicates that the method selected may affect the results. We recommend further research using a larger sample set to fully understand how methodological factors affect the preservation and observation of microremains embedded in dental calculus. We also call for a discussion on the role of dental calculus in archeological research.

[EN] Mobility is one of the main characteristics of hunter-gatherers and early plant cultivators. Since the 90s, world-wide, mobility studies have made strong progress thanks to the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), involving travel-cost analysis and route modelling, and how these relate to resource accessibility, group interaction, and territoriality. This paper presents a simulation of mobility routes in the Middle Cauca, an Andeanregion located in the Colombian Macizo Volcánico (Cordillera Central), where there is a very complete sequence of preceramic occupations from the Late Pleistocene to the Middle Holocene. We use GIS to tackle this task, by means of cost analysis tools, specifically MADO analysis and least-cost paths generation. Results show a significant association between archaeological sites and potential routes, as well as a coherent and articulated mobility network, [EN] La movilidad es una de las principales características de los grupos cazadores-recolectores e incipientes cultivadores. A partir de los años 90 y a nivel global, los estudios sobre movilidad experimentan un fuerte avance gracias a la aplicación de los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG), con los análisis de los costes de desplazamiento y el modelado de rutas, así como la relación de estos elementos con el acceso a los recursos, la interacción entre grupos y la territorialidad. El presente artículo se basa en la simulación de rutas de movilidad en el Cauca medio, región andina localizada en el Macizo Volcánico colombiano (Cordillera Central), donde se cuenta con una secuencia muy completa de ocupaciones precerámicas entre el Pleistoceno final y el Holoceno medio. Esta tarea se ha abordado, en el marco de los SIG, mediante herramientas de análisis de costes, concretamente el análisis Modelo de Acumulación del Desplazamiento Óptimo desde un origen (MADO) y la generación de caminos óptimos. Los resultados muestran una asociación significativa entre yacimientos arqueológicos y rutas potenciales, así como una red de movilidad coherente y articulada.

In the 1960s Reichel Dolmatoff applied the evolutionary model of the American archeology to order the prehispanic record in Colombia. Nonetheless, the Archaic period was loosely defined because of the lack of data existing at the time. Fifty years after that things have changed and we now have robust evidences to be able to understand this key period in the prehispanic history, characterized by its cultural diversity and the adaptive strategies plasticity displayed by the different human groups, among which the origin of food production stands out. RESUMEN: En los años sesenta, Reichel-Dolmatoff aplicó el esquema evolutivo de la arqueología americana, con el fin de ordenar la profundidad temporal del mundo prehispánico en Colombia. Sin embargo, uno de los periodos más ambiguos en su definición fue el Arcaico, principalmente por la falta de datos para la época. Cincuenta años después, el panorama ha cambiado y actualmente se cuenta con un volumen de evidencias suficiente para entender mejor un periodo clave en la historia prehispánica, caracterizado por la diversidad cultural, vista en perspectiva espacial, y la plasticidad de las estrategias adaptativas de los diferentes grupos, entre las que cabe destacar el origen de la producción de alimentos.

Starch grains are increasingly used in archaeobotanical studies as markers of diet, plant domestication, tool use and site organization in archaeological research, because their morphology and features provide a means to identify the plant that produced them. In this paper we characterize morphometrically the starch grains of five species of the genus Triticum and three varieties of Hordeum vulgare. In addition there is an assessment of the studies of starch grains made in the Prehistory of the Iberian Peninsula, indicating the achievements, the weaknesses and future directions to promote this type of bioarchaeological analysis; especially, there is a need to rely on wide reference collections, as well as apply statistical analyses and carry out experimental studies to control the processes of alteration of the starch grains.

ResumenEn este informe nos centramos en las evidencias arqueológicas del Holoceno Temprano y Medio, recuperadas en los sitios Y-021 y Y-045, como parte de un estudio de impacto ambiental en el valle medio del río Porce, Cordillera Central de Colombia. Hemos podido identificar cambios culturales, representados en las fases definidas a partir de las características de los restos materiales y su distribución estratigráfica en los dos sitios. En un primer momento, los grupos humanos que ocuparon el valle medio del río Porce vivieron principalmente de la caza y recolección de vegetales; pero desde muy temprano, alrededor del 7500 a.P. se observa una manipulación de algunas plantas. Esto desembocó en un sistema horticultor complementado principalmente con la caza, la recolección y, en menor medida, con la pesca. Hacia el 5000 a.P. irrumpe la cerámica como una novedad tecnológica acompañada de un incremento de la explotación del medio, y un aumento de los cultígenos en los diagramas de polen. Hacia el 3500 a.P. los sitios fueron abandonados.

This article is about the mobilityof hunter-gatherers and cultivators, who inhabited two regions of mountain rainforest in the Cordillera Central of Colombia between the early and middle Holocene. It aims to demonstrate that in tropical rainforests mobility is a more effective economic and social strategy than sedentary settlement. Given the poor soils and low carrying capacity of these environments, mobility provides a strategy which allows for periodic regeneration of resources. We argue that the hunter-gatherer cultivators who lived in the valleys of the Porce and middle Cauca maintained mobility even though the first evidence for cultivars appears between 7000 BP and 6000 BP. The later introduction of sedentary settlement was not due to plant cultivation, but rather to other factors such as the necessity to control territorial resources.
