Groundwater resources from the volcanic aquifers of northern Latium (central Italy) are widely used to supply local water needs and are mainly captured through wells. Nevertheless, despite the detailed hydrogeological knowledge of these aquifers, not enough information is available on the long-term pumping yield necessary to define the sustainable yield of a well. In this study, data from about 230 pumping tests (mainly step-drawdown and a few constant-flow-rate tests) performed in the volcanic aquifers of the Latium region were analyzed. Specifically, the aquifer formations intercepted by the wells are the fall and flow pyroclastic deposits of the Vico, Vulsini, and Sabatini volcanic districts; lava from the Vico, Cimino, and Vulsini volcanic districts; and Ignimbrite Cimina, one of the main pyroclastic products of the Cimino eruptions. These aquifers were grouped and analyzed by considering the type of permeability, hydrostratigraphic succession, and frequency and thickness of the aquifer horizons intercepted by wells. The results obtained in terms of specific capacity and transmissivity values are comparable among the identified different aquifer formations, showing a good correlation between the two parameters, a strong hydraulic heterogeneity (variability within five orders of magnitude), and variable responses regarding drawdown to pumping. This study highlights that the analysis of drawdown over time at a constant flow is fundamental in heterogeneous hydrogeological environments such as volcanic ones, where the trend in drawdown is often affected by the reduced spatial continuity of the most productive aquifer formations. Knowledge of the trend in drawdown over time, the thickness of the aquifer intercepted by the well, and the operating time of the well is an essential element in defining the sustainable yield of a well. Carbonate and karst aquifers are of great importance for human water supplies, for supporting aquatic habitats and providing ecosystem services. Optimizing the groundwater withdrawals is therefore essential for obtaining the maximum flow rate for human purposes while minimizing the negative effects on the environment. In particular, when the abstraction of groundwater occurs through wells, the problem of defining the sustainable yield arises. This study analyzes pumping tests conducted in carbonate and karst aquifers in southern Italy to derive indications for defining the sustainable yield of yields. The four examined cases concern the Mesozoic–Cenozoic platform and transition pelagic carbonate rocks characterized by different degree of fracturing and karstification and hosting a carbonate aquifer with variable average groundwater yields. The analysis compared drawdown–time trends and their derivatives for 35 pumping tests with theoretical curves to identify the flow dimension. Parameters useful for examining the well yields were then determined. The results show that the response to the pumping of the investigated aquifers is very variable, both among the different sites and within the same site. Well yields are very different due to aquifer heterogeneity, local hydrostratigraphy and structural setting, and position of the pumping center within the groundwater flow system. To determine the operational pumping rate for a well in this environment, this study emphasizes the importance of analyzing drawdown trends over time to correctly predict the well's long-term response to pumping. Specifically, when pumping induces a steady-state drawdown response, the focus for defining the sustainable abstraction shifts to the basin or aquifer scale. Aquifer recharge by the snowpack is relevant to be assessed to evaluate groundwater availability in mountainous karst regions. The recharge due to snowpack in the Gran Sasso aquifer has previously been estimated through an empirical approach using elevation gradients. To validate and quantify the coverage and persistence of the snowpack over time through an objective method, satellite images have been analysed. The Campo Imperatore plain, the endorheic basin acting as a preferential recharge area of the aquifer, plays an important role, both for the snow cover and also for the infiltration and recharge of springs. The identification of recharge areas has been validated by the stable isotope approach with the assessment of computed isotope recharge elevation based on the values and oscillations of the δ18O isotope recorded at the springs. The main findings confirm the high infiltration rate of Campo Imperatore plain and its direct influence on snow contribution to aquifer recharge. The extension of snow coverage out of this plain has a minor influence to recharge, highlighting that the main drivers for infiltration rate are fractured networks and karstic forms more than snow coverage on carbonate outcrops. • Flow and game-theoretical models to manage groundwater's conflict situations. • The combined models allow to estimate the cost of sustainability. • Residual outflow as an indicator of the sustainability of groundwater abstraction. Sustainable groundwater abstraction is nowadays widely debated and the application of criteria available in the literature is not easy depending on site-specific features of the systems. In the Tivoli Plain (Rome, Italy) the same groundwater resource is exploited by an important thermal plant for therapeutic purposes and is subject to dewatering for the extraction of travertine by numerous quarries, thus representing a significant case of conflict among different resources users. The study proposes a new approach in defining the sustainability of groundwater exploitation by matching the results of groundwater flow model with those of a game model. From the conceptual hydrogeological model and the numerical flow simulations, the sustainability conditions for the groundwater withdrawals are obtained and the hydrodynamic interferences between the different users are assessed. The results of numerical simulations were encapsulated in the game-theoretical model in order to find conceptual solutions to maximize the profit related to quarry's economy and, at the same time, to limit the quantitative and qualitative decline of the thermal waters. Assuming that the sustainability of the groundwater abstraction from the quarry area depends on ensuring residual groundwater flow to the thermal springs and the river, a cooperative game among the different players has been developed. The strategy of a player is bound by the influence of dewatering on the springs and the river and the player's utility is proportional to the total quantity of travertine extracted. Results indicate that the "price of sustainability" would be around a 23% reduction of the total exploited travertine volume, driven by an overall reduction in dewatering of about 31%, if compared to that necessary to reach the maximum depth of excavation. For the different groups of quarries the reduction of the pumping flow is not homogeneous but varies according to the position of the pumping center in the groundwater flow net and its distance from boundaries to be captured. Therefore, the combination of the flow model with the game model solutions appears to be a valuable tool to achieve sustainable groundwater management in a conflicting situation among different users. Superlative levels of arsenic (As) in groundwater and sediment often result from industrial pollution, as is the case for a coastal aquifer in Southern Italy, with a fertilizer plant atop. Understanding conditions under which As is mobilized from the sediments, the source of that As, is necessary for developing effective remediation plans. Here, we examine hydrogeological and geochemical factors that affect groundwater As concentrations in a contaminated coastal aquifer. Groundwater has been subject to pump-and-treat at a massive scale for more than 15 years and is still ongoing. Nevertheless, As concentrations (0.01 to 100 mg/L) that are four orders of magnitude more than Italian drinking water standard of 10 μg/L are still present in groundwater collected from about 50 monitoring wells over three years (2011, 2016, and 2018). As was quantified in three different locations by sequential extractions of 29 sediment cores in 2018 (depth 2.5 m to −16.5 m b.g.l.), combined with groundwater As composition, the aqueous and solid partitioning of As were evaluated by partition coefficient (Kd) in order to infer the evolution of the contaminant plumes. Most sediment As is found in easily extractable and/or adsorbed on amorphous iron oxides/hydroxides fractions based on sequential extractions. The study shows that As contamination persists, even after many years of active remediation due to the partitioning to sediment solids. This implies that the choice of remediation techniques requires an improved understanding of the biogeochemical As-cycling and high spatial resolution characterization of both aqueous and solid phases for sites of interest. A comprehensive hydrochemical, stable isotope and microbial analyses characterisation has been performed to evaluate the sources of groundwater, nitrogen pollution and degradation processes occurring in an industrial polluted coastal aquifer in the framework of a complex hydrodynamic system. The coexistence of ammonium and nitrate has been observed in almost all the investigated monitoring wells, reaching maximum values of 100 and 200 mg/L for both species. Chloride and potassium concentration coupled with groundwater stable isotopes data show the influence of local and urban recharge and the occurrence of seawater intrusion in areas near the coastline. δ15N–NH4+ values ranging between −4.9 and +14.9% suggest that different processes such as partial nitrification of ammonium, probably anammox activities and sorption, are occurring at the site. The isotope data for NH4+ also showed the existence of the remnant of an old fertilizer plume in the downgradient area. The nitrate isotope data ranging between +9 and +46% and +6 and +26% for δ15N–NO3− and δ18O–NO3−, respectively, suggest that nitrate content is attenuated by denitrification and probably annamox. The fast groundwater flow field is one of the reasons for the coexistence of NH4+ and NO3− in groundwater, since both compounds can penetrate the reducing zone of the aquifer. The influence of leakage of sewage pipelines on the aquifer cannot be discerned due to the complexities of the nitrogen attenuation processes, also influenced by pumping activities. Arsenic (As) is one of the most harmful and widespread groundwater contaminants globally. Besides the occurrence of geogenic As pollution, there is also a large number of sites that have been polluted by anthropogenic activities, with many of those requiring active remediation to reduce their environmental impact. Cost-effective remedial strategies are however still sorely needed. At the laboratory-scale in situ formation of magnetite through the joint addition of nitrate and Fe(II) has shown to be a promising new technique. However, its applicability under a wider range of environmental conditions still needs to be assessed. Here we use sediment and groundwater from a severely polluted coastal aquifer and explore the efficiency of nitrate-Fe(II) treatments in mitigating dissolved As concentrations. In selected experiments >99% of dissolved As was removed, compared to unamended controls, and maintained upon addition of lactate, a labile organic carbon source. Pre- and post-experimental characterisation of iron (Fe) mineral phases suggested a >90% loss of amorphous Fe oxides in favour of increased crystalline, recalcitrant oxide and sulfide phases. Magnetite formation did not occur via the nitrate-dependent oxidation of the amended Fe(II) as originally expected. Instead, magnetite is thought to have formed by the Fe(II)-catalysed transformation of pre-existing amorphous and crystalline Fe oxides. The extent of amorphous and crystalline Fe oxide transformation was then limited by the exhaustion of dissolved Fe(II). Elevated phosphate concentrations lowered the treatment efficacy, indicating joint removal of phosphate is necessary for maximum impact. The remedial efficiency was not impacted by varying salinities, thus rendering the tested approach a viable remediation method for coastal aquifers.
