The composition and ichthyofaunal diversity of the Bay of Bengal and its adjacent coast have been being explored with time. Australian sawcheek scorpionfish, Brachypterois curvispina is a newly reported species in Bangladeshi water recorded from the St. Martin Island (coral reef) off the Bay of Bengal coast. The identity of this species was confirmed by comparing it with the published morphological description of a specimen reported from the Australian coast. The presence of posteriorly directed lachrymal spines is the key character of this species. Its preferred food items were observed small fish, shrimp, lobster, crab, and some aquatic insects. The dispersal of this species in this geographical area illustrates a considerable expansion of its distributional range, the previously reported Australian coast which is far off from the present record. Although the actual cause of dispersal is unexplored, climate change and global warming are assumed to stretch out the species distribution range. This discovery of Brachypterois curvispina provides a new non-native species record in the coral reef of Bangladesh and represents the northern-most dispersal in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Bay of Bengal coast is acting as a pristine ecological niche for many indigenous and non-indigenous fish species as along with other aquatic organisms. The present study describes the first record of lanternbelly, Acropoma argentistigma (Okamoto & Ida, 2002) from the Bay of Bengal coast, Bangladesh based on 32 specimens. The species was identified on the basis of phenotypic characteristics; for instance, pinkish red body colour, presence of U-shaped luminous gland, well-organised conical teeth on the lower jaw, 17 gill rackers, and position of anus in the middle of ventral margin. The first record of Acropoma argentistigma in the area further enhances the ichthyofaunal diversity in these area as well as overall fish species of Bangladesh.

Current study reports the length‐weight relationships (LWRs) of three marine fish species collected from the fishermen catches covering three seasons i.e., rainy, autumn and winter between June, 2016 and February, 2017. Fishermen caught the species using beach seine net (3.5 cm mesh size) and set bag net (0.5 cm mesh size) up to 200 m far away from the shoreline. The LWRs for fish species were W = 0.0180TL³.¹⁹² for A. longispinnis, W = 0.0109TL².⁹⁷¹ for R. russeliana and W = 0.0098TL².⁹⁴² for C. neglecta with their r² values of 0.971, 0.962 and 0.997, respectively.

New fish species are being reported outside the frontiers of their natural territory. The Bay of Bengal with its adjacent coastal waters is an ideal habitat for diversified fish species. Recently, two dragonet species belonging to the Callionymidae family were discovered from the inshore coastal waters in the southern region of the Bay of Bengal, constituting a new record in the territorial waters of Bangladesh. After observing a specimen of callionymid species in a landing center, six sampling points were selected to confirm the presence of the species and the survey continued for six months. With the hauling of set bag nets and gill nets by fishermen, a total of 13 specimens of dragonets were captured from five sampling sites over the sampling period. The species, identified as Callionymus carebares and Callionymus profundus based on their morphological features, are not native to the region. We confirmed 9 specimens of C. carebares and 4 specimens of C. profundus in the laboratory with body weight ranging between 7.29–19.63 g and 5.2–9.83 g, respectively. Though the definite reasons of their occurrence in this new territory are yet to discover, the species C. carebares possibly migrated from the nearest native habitat in southwestern coastal regions of India; on the other hand, C. profundus, has only been previously reported from the northern regions of the Red Sea in Israel.

Morphological parameters comprising length-weight relationships (LWRs), sex ratio, condition factor (KF) and allometric growth of paradise threadfin, Polynemus paradiseus from the southern coast of Bangladesh were estimated. A total of 221 specimens were collected with the help of local fishermen ranging size 8.30-13.70 cm standard length (SL) and 11.64-50.67 g body weight (BW) during the period of January to October, 2104. The overall sex ratio of the samples did not reveal significant variation from the expected value of 1:1 (male: female=1:0.99, χ2=0.004, P < 0.05). Length-frequency distribution revealed a size predominance of males over females, where mean variation of males consistently exceeded that of females throughout the year. The allometric coefficient b of LWR significantly deviated from 3 indicating allometric growth in males and females. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) showed significant differences in slope and intercept between the sexes (P < 0.001). Barramundi, Lates calcarifer (Bloch, 1790) is one of the most commercially important species world-wide, with aquaculture of this species being relatively new in Bangladesh. This paper outlines the on growing farming systems of barramundi, its cultural constraints, economic significance, and availability in coastal Bangladesh. Although the farming practice of this species is relatively new, it is gaining prime preference among the consumers due to its nutritive values, taste and high flesh content compared to other commercially important species available in the entire coastal area. Farmers are following semi-intensive and extensive farming system along with other species due to the lack of seed in Bangladesh except some ordinary nurseries which rear natural sources fertilized eggs and fry to fingerling size. Overall, a shift from large scale capture fishery to culture across the southwestern part of Bangladesh marks an important emerging trend of barramundi farming in this area.
