The diploma thesis solves the question of photography not only from the point of view of a work of art, but as a part of a cultural code. Photography in the digital era has the potential to become a new kind of visual language. From this perspective, the photographic universe reveals several essential questions, which we address here. These questions explore topics such as: historical development of images and text, the difference between traditional images and technical images, the cultural impact of mass production of digital devices and photographs, the essence of photography as a symbol from the point of view of semiotics and logic, the difficulties of deciphering photography, the linguistic aspects of digital photography or the meaning of photography in virtual (public) space. Due to the nature of the monitored topics, the work will address problems mainly related to language, logic, epistemology, human freedom in the context of man/device and marginally also semiotics.

Die vorliegende Arbeit mit dem Titel „Mobile Apps als Kommunikationsmittel zwischen Bürger*innen und Behörden zur Schadensmeldung an Bauwerken“ beschäftigt sich mit einem aktuellen als auch zukunftsorientierten Thema. Es wird analysiert, welchen Einfluss die Bürger*innen auf wissenschaftliche Fragen haben, was auch als Citizen Science benannt wird. Citizen Science gibt es in Österreich seit sieben Jahren und versucht, das Vertrauen zwischen Bürger*innen und Wissenschaftlern durch deren Beiträge zu stärken. Die Stadt Wien entwickelt sich von einem eingebundenen Bürokratie-Modell zu einem offenen partizipativen Stadt-Modell. Durch den engen Kontakt der Bürger*innen mit der IT-Plattform offerieren sich effiziente Lösungen. Die Maßnahmen und Ideen werden der Verwaltung transparent und offen übermittelt. Durch die Unterstützung der Applikationen hat sich das Vertrauen und der Austausch von gegenseitigen Ideen zwischen Bürgern*innen und Behörden vereinfacht. Die App „Sag´s Wien“ wurde 2017 in Wien und die Applikation „Ordnungsamt Online“ im Jahr 2015 in Berlin veröffentlicht. Diese Apps werden auch als Bürger-Apps oder Melde-Applikationen bezeichnet und dienen dazu, sich mit der Stadtverwaltung in Kontakt zu setzen und ihr Anregungen bezüglich Schäden der Stadt/des Ortes zu melden. Ziel dieser Applikationen ist es, dass Bürger*innen, ohne Zeit zu verlieren, aufwandslos und ungefiltert ihre Meldungen erstellen können. Zu den Zielen dieser Arbeit zählt es, die Applikationen zu analysieren mit deren Funktionen zu beschreiben. Im Resultat zeigt sich, dass die Baubranche dadurch darin unterstützt wird, den Anliegen und Wünschen der Bürger*innen mit ihren Leistungen entgegenzukommen. The present work entitled “Mobile apps as a means of communication between citizens and authorities for reporting damage at buildings” deals with a current as well as future-oriented topic. It analyses the influence of citizens on scientific questions, which is also called Citizen Science. Citizen Science has existed in Austria for seven years and seeks to strengthen the trust between citizens and scientists through their contributions. The city of Vienna is evolving from an integrated bureaucracy model to an open participatory city model. Through the close contact of citizens with the IT platform offers efficient solutions are offered. The measures and ideas are communicated to the administration in a transparent and open manner. By supporting the applications, the trust and the exchange of mutual ideas between citizens and authorities has been simplified. The app “Sag´s Wien” was published in 2017 in Vienna and the application “Ordnungsamt Online” in 2015 in Berlin. These apps are also referred to as citizen apps or reporting applications and are used to get in touch with the city administration and to report their suggestions regarding damage to the city/town. The aim of these applications is that citizens can create their reports effortlessly and unfiltered without losing time. One of the goals of this work is to analyze the applications and describe their functions. The result shows that the construction industry is supported in meeting the concerns and wishes of the citizens with their services.

Der Ursprung der Fotografie wurzelt in der perspektivischen Malerei, die das Gemalte erstmals r��umlich darstellte und somit ein neues ���Sehen��� erm��glichte. Zur Unterst��tzung wurde dabei ein optischer Apparat, die Camera obscura, eingesetzt, die wie das menschliche Auge ein auf dem Kopf stehendes Abbild der Au��enwelt erzeugte, um von diesem ein perspektivisch korrektes Bild malen zu k��nnen. Mit der sp��teren Erfindung der eigentlichen Fotografie gelang es dann erstmals die Umwelt auch au��erhalb der Malerei festzuhalten. Auf Grund der zu Beginn noch langen Belichtungszeiten und der damit verbundenen unbeweglichen Eigenschaften von Motiven, stand die Fotografie seit ihren Anf��ngen in engem Verh��ltnis mit der Architektur. So waren die ersten Fotografien reine Architekturaufnahmen. Seither hat sich die Fotografie sowohl technisch als auch stilistisch ma��geblich ge��ndert: War sie fr��her elit��r und der wohlhabenden Oberschicht vorbehalten, ist sie heute omnipr��sent und zu einem Massenph��nomen herangewachsen. Die Fotografie ist im Bereich der Architektur zwar nach wie vor wichtigstes Darstellungsmedium, insbesondere zur Dokumentation sowie zur medialen Verbreitung. Als eigene Kunstform ger��t ihre Vielfalt und Komplexit��t auf Grund der selbstverst��ndlichen Pr��senz im Alltag jedoch leider oft aus dem Blick. Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit Der Apparat & das Auge befasst sich daher mit dem Entwurf eines Zentrums f��r Fotografie in Wien. Ein Ort, der neben dem Ergebnis auch dem Geschehen, dem Prozess vom Motiv ��ber die Entwicklung bis hin zur Betrachtung, der Fotografie ganzheitlich Raum gibt. Der Apparat dient als Geh��use, er ist das Instrument zur Bildproduktion. Das Auge ist das Sehwerkzeug, das Sensorium der visuellen Wahrnehmung des Menschen und dient zur bewussten Vermittlung des Mediums Fotografie. Situiert an einem vernachl��ssigten Ort im markanten Gef��ge des Donaukanals in Wien: Auf der Schleuseninsel der Staustufe Kaiserbad soll der Entwurf f��r das Zentrum f��r Fotografie seinen Platz finden und somit durch den Dialog zwischen Fotografie & Architektur sowohl die Fotografie, als auch die Insel einer breiten ��ffentlichkeit ganzj��hrig zur Nutzung zug��nglich gemacht werden., The origin of photography is rooted in the application of perspective in paintings. This first-time use of spatial representation resulted in a new way of seeing. Artists used optical devices such as the camera obscura to help them achieve accurate perspective in their compositions. Like the human eye it projected an image of the outside world upside down. With the invention of photography itself it first became possible to portray surroundings mechanically and beyond the bounds of painting. Due to the long exposure times and consequently the immovable properties of the photo subject, photography was always closely related to architecture. As a result the first photographs were strictly architectural images. Photography has significantly changed technically as much as stilistically: while it used to be reserved for the wealthy and elitist upper class, photography is now omnipresent as it turned into a mass phenomenon over time. Photography - not only as a mere form of documentation, but especially as an art form and a means of medial distribution - is still an important presentation medium in the field of architecture. Nevertheless its diversity and complexity is often forgotten because of its natural and self-evident presence in everyday life. This diploma thesis, The apparatus & the eye, explores the concept of a center for photography in Vienna - a place that relates to photography from start to finish. It not only gives room to photo exhibitions but also focuses on photo subjects and the art of photographic processing. While the apparatus is responsible for the production of the photograph, the organ of sight - the eye - serves as the sensorium of visual perception and furthermore undertakes the concious communication of the medium of photography. Situated in a still rather neglected part of town but with distinctive surroundings along the Danube Canal, the center of photography has been designed to be build on the sluice island of barrage Kaiserbad. In doing so photography as well as the island will - with the dialogue between photography & architecture - be accessible to a wide audience all year long.

Instead of seeking to revive old beliefs, this issue focuses on current questions and problems that arise between media theories and theories of the psyche.

Um die Berechnung von Produktschädigungsraten als Erweiterung der üblichen wärmetechnischen Auslegungsrechnungen von Wärmeübertragern zu ermöglichen, wird ein volumenbezogener, reaktionskinetischer Ansatz entwickelt. Dazu wird ein Modellstoffsystem ausgewählt und simulationsgestützt möglichst produktschonende Betriebsparameter für einen Laborwärmeübertrager ermittelt. Die Validierung kann im Experiment demonstriert werden. Weiterhin werden produktschonende Betriebsparameter für die Beaufschlagung des Laborwärmeübertragers mit einem Realstoffsystems berechnet und die Ergebnisse im Experiment hinsichtlich Validierbarkeit überprüft. Abschließend wird die Anwendung der entwickelten, simulationsgestützten Methode an intensivierenden Einbauten für laminar durchströmte Wärmeübertragerrohre demonstriert.

Der Capillarblut-Transfusor des St. Petersburger Arztes Franz Gesellius stellt für die Wissensgeschichte der Bluttransfusion eine Sackgasse dar. Dieser innovative Apparat wird 1868 von seinem Erfinder hoffnungsvoll vorgestellt und wenig später für untauglich befunden. Anhand von zwei Quellen aus dem Jahr 1868 und 1873 vergleicht diese Arbeit die technischen Texte und Abbildungen und führt die Ergebnisse jeweils mit dem Diskurs der Bluttransfusion eng. Damit rekonstruiert sie die kuriose Geschichte eines Apparates, der nie funktioniert hat und dennoch eine ebenfalls dysfunktionale Praxis, die der Lammbluttransfusion, begründet. Der methodische Ansatz dieser Arbeit ist dabei nicht als Gegenentwurf zu einer "herkömmlichen" Wissensgeschichte zu verstehen. Vielmehr stellt sie sich dem in der actor–network theory und in der Diskursanalyse disputablen Problem der Unmöglichkeit des Sprechens über ein Nichtwissen. Am Leitfaden der Störungstheorie von Michel Serres werden diese theoretischen Überlegungen entwickelt und als eine Nichtwissensgeschichte erzählt. The Capillarblut-Transfusor by the St Petersburg physician Franz Gesellius constitutes a dead end for the history of knowledge in blood transfusion. In 1868, the inventor presents his imaginative apparatus that, shortly thereafter, is deemed unusable. Based on two sources from 1868 and 1873, this work compares technical narration and images, and merges the results with the discourse on blood transfusion. It thereby reconstructs the curious story of an apparatus that never worked, but motivated blood transfusion from lamb to human, another dysfunctional practice. The methodological approach does not implicate an alternative draft to history of knowledge as it is "usually" done. Instead, it addresses the arguable problem of actor–network theory and discourse analysis that speaking about nescience is impossible. Michel Serres' theory of disturbance is used as a framework to develop these theoretical considerations and to tell a story of nescience.

This essay reflects a particular method and way of working that I employ when undertaking artistic research. My artworks are rooted and develop from the situation I find myself in as an artist, the very context I exhibit the work within. I do this by trying to understand this position, both on the micro and macro scale. As an artist currently studying at—and subsequently exhibiting in relation to— Konstfack, I base my research with the physical manifestation of the school. An imposing building that was part of a huge headquarters and factory site for the telecommunication company, Ericsson, in south Stockholm. The title of my essay is from the translation of a unique German cipher machine, the Geheimschreiber, made known to me through enquiry into this site. Throughout the Second World War the German army used this machine to send highly encrypted military messages across Swedish telephone cables. Following one of the greatest accomplishments in the history of cryptography, a Swedish mathematician broke this German code and subsequently assisted in designing a deciphering machine on behalf of the Swedish Intelligence branch. This device, known as the App, was secretly developed and manufactured by Ericsson, possibly where I now study. In exploring the theme of secrets, this essay originates from an underpinning desire and subject of my work to reveal what is concealed or overlooked. Through researching and writing this essay I attempt to have a better understanding on the notion of secrets, in both the private and public realms. Introducing the artistic process and situation I am working from, I explore the central role that secrets play within society. In order to understand secrecy today I introduce the intertwined and associated contemporary debates of privacy, (both private and public) and transparency through such subjects as Google’s new privacy policy, mobile phone hacking, WikiLeaks and offshore banking.

Water effects in fluoroindate glasses have been investigated. Glasses with base composition 40InF3∙20ZnF2∙20SnF2∙16BaF2∙2GdF2∙2NaF were exposed in a Soxhlet apparatus to water at 80°C. Corrosion was less intense than the one observed for fluorzirconate glasses. Vibrational spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and x-rays diffraction were applied in order to characterize the glass surface.
