This work aimed to contribute to the nutritional and functional characterization of roasted baru nuts, a seed widely consumed and produced in Brazil. Baru nut was characterized in terms of its nutritional value and volatile composition (SPME-GC-MS analysis). The ultrasound assisted extraction was used to extract free and bound phenolic compounds that were identified by LC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS method. Bioactivity assays were carried out to evaluate the antioxidant activity (ORAC and HOSC assay) and anticancer effect (inhibition of HT29 cell growth and targeting of cancer stemness) of baru nut extracts and phenolic compounds. Results showed that baru is a good source of protein and monounsaturated fatty acids, specifically oleic acid (47.20 g/100 g). The predominant volatile compounds are hexanal (71.18%) and 2,5-dimethyl-pyrazine (9.43%). The main phenolic compounds identified were gallic acid and its derivatives, such as gallic acid esters and gallotannins. Among all, gallic acid and methyl gallate seemed to be the main compounds responsible for the high antioxidant activity. The antiproliferative effect evaluated of baru extracts in HT29 cell line showed ability to impair cell growth in both monolayer and spheroid cultures and to reduce ALDH+ population. These results supply new information about the functional compounds presents in baru nut, which are important sources of natural antioxidants and antiproliferative compounds., (Copyright © 2020. This study reports the synthesis, characterization and biological properties of films based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and a cationic tannin polymer derivative (TN). Films are obtained from polymeric blends by tuning the PVA/TN weight ratios. The materials are characterized through infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, mechanical analyses, and scanning electron microscopy. More hydrophilic surfaces are created by modulating the PVA and TN concentrations in the blends. Disintegration tests showed that the films present durability in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) and low stability in simulated gastric fluid (pH 1.2). The film created at 90/10 PVA/TN weight ratio and crosslinked at 109 PVA/glutaraldehyde molar ratio (sample PVA10/TN10) supports the attachment and proliferation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells after 7 days of culture. The scaffolding capacity of the PVA10/TN10 surface is compared with titanium, one of the most important biomedical materials used in bone replacements. Also, the PVA/TN films exhibited cytocompatibility, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Inula viscosa (I. viscosa) is a common Mediterranean plant, well known for its content on bioactive molecules. The chemical composition of an ethanolic extract from I. viscosa leaves, growing in Algeria, was analysed by liquid chromatography coupled to photodiode array detection and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS) operating in negative and positive mode. The methodology used revealed the presence of 51 compounds from which 47 were putatively identified, including 11 phenolic acids, 23flavonoids, one lignan and 12 terpenoids. Twenty-six of these compounds are described for the first time in I. viscosa. Antioxidant activity was measured using three different and complementary chemical assays: DPPH radical scavenging activity, oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity (HOSC). Results demonstrate that ethanolic leaf extract exhibit a high scavenging ability against DPPH (157.72 ± 6.45 μM TE/g DW), peroxyl (4471.42 ± 113.16 μM TE/g DW) and hydroxyl (630.10 ± 17.81 μM TE/g DW) radicals, indicating that I. viscosa can be a promising source of bioactive compounds., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. An antioxidant mechanism of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) were compared with a simplified model of α-tocopherol, butylhydroxytoluene and hydroxytoluene in order to understand the antioxidant nature of THC and CBD molecules using DFT. The following electronic properties were evaluated: frontier orbitals nature, ionization potential, O-H bond dissociation energy (BDEOH), stabilization energy, and spin density distribution. An important factor that shows an influence in the antioxidant property of THC is the electron abstraction at the phenol position. Our data indicate that the decrease of the HOMO values and the highest ionization potential values are related to phenol, ether, and alkyl moieties. On the other hand, BDEOH in molecules with the cyclohexenyl group at ortho position of phenol are formed from lower energies than the molecules with an ether group at the meta position. In the light of our results, the properties calculated here predict that THC has a sightly higher antioxidant potential than CBD.

An antioxidant structure-activity study is carried out in this work with ten flavonoid compounds using quantum chemistry calculations with the functional of density theory method. According to the geometry obtained by using the B3LYP/6-31G(d) method, the HOMO, ionization potential, stabilization energies, and spin density distribution showed that the flavonol is the more antioxidant nucleus. The spin density contribution is determinant for the stability of the free radical. The number of resonance structures is related to the π-type electron system. 3-hydroxyflavone is the basic antioxidant structure for the simplified flavonoids studied here. The electron abstraction is more favored in the molecules where ether group and 3-hydroxyl are present, nonetheless 2,3-double bond and carbonyl moiety are facultative.

A study using two classification methods (SDA and SIMCA) was carried out in this work with the aim of investigating the relationship between the structure of flavonoid compounds and their free-radical-scavenging ability. In this work, we report the use of chemometric methods (SDA and SIMCA) able to select the most relevant variables (steric, electronic, and topological) responsible for this ability. The results obtained with the SDA and SIMCA methods agree perfectly with our previous model, in which we used other chemometric methods (PCA, HCA and KNN) and are also corroborated with experimental results from the literature. This is a strong indication of how reliable the selection of variables is.
