In this study, a comparative analysis of silver nanoparticles treatment and chitosan coating on packaging paper barrier properties was carried out. In order to examine the water, grease, and antibacterial barrier properties of silver nanoparticle-treated and chitosan-coated laboratory-obtained paper samples, a mixture of bleached softwood and hardwood celluloses was used. In order to conduct the comparative analysis SEM, water contact angle, Cobb60, and Kit tests were carried out on a cellulose sample, and four paper samples (three of them treated with silver nanoparticles—1, 2, and 3 mL/20 cm2 or chitosan coated—0.5, 1, and 2 g/m2) together with the inhibition activity against nine Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and fungal strains. The study found out that increasing the silver nanoparticle treatment and chitosan coating led to improved water resistance, while grease resistance was improved only for chitosan coated paper samples. Additionally, paper treated with 3 mL/20 cm2 of silver nanoparticles had the highest antibacterial protection (81.6%) against the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, followed by Gram-negative Escherichia coli (75.8%). For the rest of the studied microorganisms, the average efficiency of the treated paper was 40.79%. The treatment of the paper with 1 and 2 mL/20 cm2 of silver nanoparticles was less effective—27.13 and 39.83%, respectively. The antibacterial protection of 2 g/m2 chitosan-coated paper samples was the most effective (average 79%) against the tested bacterial, yeast, and fungal strains. At 1 and 0.5 g/m2 chitosan coatings, the efficiency was 72.38% and 54.67%, respectively. Gram-positive bacteria, yeasts, and fungal strains were more sensitive to chitosan supplementation.

Improving the shelf lives of fruits is challenging. The biodegradable polysaccharide pullulan exhibits excellent film-forming ability, gas barrier performance, and natural decomposability, making it an optimal material for fruit preservation. To overcome problems of high cost and film porosity of existing packaging technologies, we aimed to develop pullulan-based packaging paper to enhance the shelf lives of fruits. A thin paper coating comprising a mixture of 15 wt.% pullulan solution at various standard viscosities (75.6, 77.8, and 108.5 mPa·s) with tea polyphenols (15:2) and/or vitamin C (150:1) improved the oxygen transmission rate (120–160 cm3 m−2·24 h·0.1 MPa), water vapor transmission rate (−1 m−2·h·kPa), maximum free radical clearance rate (>87%), and antibacterial properties of base packaging paper. Grapes wrapped with these pullulan-based papers exhibited less weight loss (>4.41%) and improved hardness (>16.4%) after 10 days of storage compared to those of control grapes (wrapped in untreated/base paper). Grapes wrapped with pullulan-based paper had >12.6 wt.% total soluble solids, >1.5 mg/g soluble protein, >0.44 wt.% titratable acidity, and ≥4.5 mg 100 g−1 ascorbic acid. Thus, pullulan-based paper may prolong the shelf life of grapes with operational convenience, offering immense value for fruit preservation.

[Display omitted] Solar interfacial evaporation is one of the most efficient and environmentally-friendly clean freshwater production technologies. Plasma metal nanoparticles are excellent optical absorption materials, but their high cost and inherent resonance narrow bandwidth absorption limit their application. In this work, commercial cellulose papers are used as substrates to synthesize Ag-Ni/cellulose paper by the seed-mediated method. The Ag-Ni/cellulose paper exhibits high light absorption at the full wavelength (200–2500 nm) resulting from the synergistic effect of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag NPs and the interband transitions (IBTs) of Ni. Under one-sun irradiation (1 kW m−2), the energy utilization efficiency of Ag-Ni/cellulose paper is as high as 93.8%, and the water evaporation rate is 1.87 kg m−2 h−1. Diffusion inhibition experiment results show that the Ag-Ni/cellulose paper exhibits excellent antibacterial performance, and the antibacterial performance is highly related with Ag NPs content. To enhance the strength of paper cultural relics and prolong the life of paper cultural relics, it is an urgent need to prepare new material for preservation and protection of paper. In this paper, chitosan quaternary ammonium salt/HEC-acrylate was synthesized with O-hydroxypropyl trimethyl quaternary ammonium salt chitosan (O-HACC) and Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC)-acrylate emulsion, the synthesized materials has multiple functions, such as deacidification, reinforcement, anti-mildew and antibacterial etc. The synthesized new materials were applied on paper, and their protective effect was evaluated by testing the mechanical and optical properties and antibacterial properties of the paper. The results showed that when the mass concentration of O-HACC was 0.6 %, the tensile strength, folding times and tearing strength of the paper coated with protective solution were improved to a certain extent, while the optical properties and appearance of the paper remained basically unchanged. Soap as a cleaning product has been the primary needs since the spread of Covid-19. Government regulations require people to wash their hands. Hence the demand for soap production is increasing. This study aimed to obtain a Traveling Paper Soap formulation from VCO and durian seeds for antibacterial activity on the skin. The experimental laboratory method uses quantitative and qualitative descriptive analysis. The treatment in this study was the production of Durian Seed Bioethanol with a bioethanol capacity of 19.95% from the hydrolysis of 486 g of Durian Seed flour. The treatment in this study was the manufacture of durian seed bioethanol with a bioethanol content of 19.95% from the hydrolysis of 486 g of durian seed flour. The parameters of the bioethanol viscosity test were 0.7137 cP, and the bioethanol density was 0.9669 g/mL. Based on our research, the best traveling paper soap results are formulation 2 with a water content of 7%, pH value of 10, free alkali content of 0.21%, and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus Epidermis of 22.3 mm. According to the Indonesian National Standard Mandatory Solid Soap, SNI 3532:1994, it shows that soap complies with the SNI 3532:1994 standard.

A great paradigm for foremost food packaging is to use renewable and biodegradable lignocellulose−based materials instead of plastic. Novel packages were successfully prepared from the cellulose paper by coating a mixture of polylactic acid (PLA) with cinnamaldehyde (CIN) as a barrier screen and nano silica−modified stearic acid (SA/SiO2) as a superhydrophobic layer. As comprehensively investigated by various tests, results showed that the as−prepared packages possessed excellent thermal stability attributed to inorganic SiO2 incorporation. The excellent film−forming characteristics of PLA improved the tensile strength of the manufactured papers (104.3 MPa) as compared to the original cellulose papers (70.50 MPa), enhanced by 47.94%. Benefiting from the rough nanostructure which was surface−modified by low surface energy SA, the contact angle of the composite papers attained 156.3°, owning superhydrophobic performance for various liquids. Moreover, the composite papers showed excellent gas, moisture, and oil bacteria barrier property as a result of the reinforcement by the functional coatings. The Cobb300s and WVP of the composite papers were reduced by 100% and 88.56%, respectively, and their antibacterial efficiency was about 100%. As the novel composite papers have remarkable thermal stability, tensile strength, and barrier property, they can be exploited as a potential candidate for eco−friendly, renewable, and biodegradable cellulose paper−based composites for the substitute of petroleum−derived packages.

Abstract Solar‐driven photothermal water evaporation is considered an elegant and sustainable technology for freshwater production. The existing systems, however, often suffer from poor stability and biofouling issues, which severely hamper their prospects in practical applications. Conventionally, photothermal materials are deposited on the membrane supports via vacuum‐assisted filtration or dip‐coating methods. Nevertheless, the weak inherent material‐membrane interactions frequently lead to poor durability, and the photothermal material layer can be easily peeled off from the hosting substrates or partially dissolved when immersed in water. In the present article, the discovery of the incorporation of borophene into cellulose nanofibers (CNF), enabling excellent environmental stability with a high light‐to‐heat conversion efficiency of 91.5% and water evaporation rate of 1.45 kg m−2 h−1 under simulated sunlight is reported. It is also demonstrated that borophene papers can be employed as an excellent active photothermal material for eliminating almost 100% of both gram‐positive and gram‐negative bacteria within 20 min under three sun irradiations. The result opens a new direction for the design of borophene‐based papers with unique photothermal properties which can be used for the effective treatment of a wide range of wastewaters.

With the rapid development of the automotive industry, people have put forward higher requirements for automotive air filter paper, hoping that it can meet the more complex air environment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop "green" multifunctional air filters with excellent filtration efficiency, flame retardancy, hydrophobicity, antibacterial properties and low cost. In this work, a multifunctional cellulose-based air filter paper with flame retardant, antibacterial and hydrophobic properties was prepared from mercerized pulp and softwood pulp via chemical treatment with pre-synthesized N, N -biguanide-diethyl phosphonic acid (AGDEPA) and octadecyl trichlorosilane (OTS). Due to the high nitrogen and phosphorus content of AGDEPA, the air filter paper shows remarkable self-extinguishing behavior and have no afterglow with an intact textile structure. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of air filter paper reached 38.8%, meeting the industry standard for flame retardant materials. Antimicrobial tests confirm that the killing efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus reached 93.9% and 99.99%. Furthermore, OTS containing hydrophobic long chains successfully constructed a multi-layer micro/nanostructure on the paper surface, and its contact angle to water was up to 153.6°. The addition of mercerized fibers also effectively improves the air permeability of the filter paper, which can reach 619 L/m2·s, and subsequent impregnation avoided the impact on the pore size of the material. • A new N-P flame retardant and antimicrobial agent was synthesized and fixed to the paper fibers by chemical grafting. • Excellent flame retardant, antibacterial and hydrophobic properties were achieved. • The high permeability and mechanical properties of filter paper meet the needs of practical use. • The green, low-cost, multi-functional all-fiber air filter material was realized. In this research, Bougainvillea glabra paper flower extract was used to quickly synthesize biogenic silver nanoparticles (BAgNPs) utilizing green chemistry. Using the flower extract as a biological reducing agent, silver nanoparticles were generated by the conversion of Ag+ cations to Ag0 ions. Data patterns obtained from physical techniques for characterizing BAgNPs, employing UV-visible, scattering electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), suggested that the nanoparticles have a spherical to oval form with size ranging from 10 to 50 nm. Spectroscopy and microscopic analysis were used to learn more about the antibacterial properties of the biologically produced BAgNPs from Bougainvillea glabra. Further, the potential mechanism of action of nanoparticles was investigated by studying their interactions in vitro with several bacterial strains and mammalian cancer cell systems. Finally, we can conclude that BAgNPs can be functionalized to dramatically inhibit bacterial growth and the growth of cancer cells in culture conditions, suggesting that biologically produced nanomaterials will provide new opportunities for a wide range of biomedical applications in the near future.

Here, we aimed to boost antibacterial performance of cellulose fibers for paper sheet application. Therefore, TiO2 nanoparticles have been used with controlled loading onto the surface of the fibers. A simple and facile composite preparation route based on ultrasound and mechanical assisted stirring has been developed. We tested cellulose paper enriched by TiO2 from 1.0 wt% to 8.0 wt%, respectively. Antibacterial performance has been studied against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. Studies showed that all composites exhibit significant capability to reduce living cells of S. aureus and E. coli bacteria at least 60%. The simplicity, low cost, and reproducibility of the prepared method indicates the potential to be scaled up for industrial applications.

Bio-based polymer composites find increasing research and industrial interest in different areas of our life. In this study, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) isolated from sugar beet pulp and nanoemulsion prepared from sugar beet pectin and pomegranate extract (PGE) were used for making films and used as coating with antioxidant and antimicrobial activities for paper. For Pectin/PGE nanoemulsion preparation, different ratios of PGE were mixed with pectin using ultrasonic treatment; the antibacterial properties were evaluated to choose the formula with the adequate antibacterial activity. The antioxidant activity of the nanoemulsion with the highest antimicrobial activity was also evaluated. The nanoemulsion with the optimum antibacterial activity was mixed with different ratios of CNFs. Mechanical, greaseproof, antioxidant activity, and antibacterial properties of the CNFs/Pectin/PGE films were evaluated. Finally, the CNFs/Pectin/PGE formulation with the highest antibacterial activity was tested as a coating material for paper. Mechanical, greaseproof, and air porosity properties, as well as water vapor permeability and migration of the coated layer from paper sheets in different media were evaluated. The results showed promising applicability of the CNFs/Pectin/PGE as films and coating material with antibacterial and antioxidant activities, as well as good stability for packaging aqueous, fatty, and acidic food products.

Cellulose bromo-isobutyl ester was prepared using filter paper as raw material through esterification reaction with 2-Bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIBB) in N, N-Dimethyl-formamide (DMF). Cellulose esters with different degree of substitution were obtained. FTIR result indicated the successful introduction of bromo isobutyryl group in cellulose to obtain cellulose ester (Cell-Br). The surface of modified filter paper become rough and grooves could be observed by SEM. The thermal stability of the cellulose ester decreased in comparison with unmodified filter paper. Besides, the hydrophobicity of the filter paper was improved and the water contact angle increased from 73.4° to 116.5° with increasing degree of substitution. The water vapor barrier property was improved by 26 %. Furthermore, it was also found the modified filter paper possessed antibacterial activity against S. aureus bacteria. Based on many years of experience, packaging is considered as an inactive barrier that protects materials and goods from environmental factors. The applicability of native chemical additive such as essential oils in wrapping papers can be used in the forms of films, treatments, coatings or others. Essential oils or extracts from different aromatic plants are used as bioactive substances for antimicrobial activity. In this research, lavender essential oil treatment of packaging papers is examined for its inhibition activity under nine microorganisms—two Gram-positive bacteria, three Gram-negative bacteria, two yeast and two fungal strains. The effectiveness of the treatment on the structural and strength indicators of the obtained paper samples is monitored. In detail, a five-day examination is conducted on the antibacterial effectiveness of lavender essential oil treatment. Results indicate that the lavender treatment of the obtained packaging paper is successful and the antifungal effect is more pronounced. The antimicrobial efficiency of paper treated with lavender essential oil is between 60 and 90% in the first two hours after treatment and gradually decreases to 40%–50% at the end of the 120 h period. The lavender essential oil treatment of wrapping paper has a promising perspective for preserving products from microbial spoilage and extending their shelf life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The demand for paper-based packaging materials as an alternative to incumbent disposable petroleum-derived polymers for food packaging applications is ever-growing. However, typical paper-based formats are not suitable for use in unconventional applications due to inherent limitations (e.g., excessive hydrophilicity, lack antimicrobial ability), and accordingly, enabling new capabilities is necessity. Herein, a simple and environmentally friendly strategy was proposed to introduce antimicrobial and hydrophobic functions to cellulose paper through successive chemical grafting of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) and cinnamaldehyde (CA). The results revealed that cellulose paper not only showed long-term antibacterial effect on different bacteria, but also inhibited a wide range of fungi. Encouragingly, the modified paper, which is fluorine-free, displays a high contact angle of 119.7°. Thus, even in the wet state, the modified paper can still maintain good mechanical strength. Meanwhile, the multifunctional composite papers have excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Compared with ordinary cellulose paper, multifunctional composite paper can effectively prolong the shelf life of strawberries. Preservation of paper-based historical artifacts against deterioration due to the presence of bacteria and fungi colonies has been one of the major issues for the importance of protecting the cultural heritage of humankind. Advances in nanotechnology have enabled the implementation of nanomaterials for this purpose. In this work, calcium/chitosan nanoparticles (Ca/CS NPs) were prepared and well-characterized to investigate their potential as a novel approach for preserving paper-based documents. Following the fundamental characterizations, it was found that Ca/CS NPs are spherical nanoparticles with ~65 nm average size and homogenous dispersion (PdI: 0.2). Besides, minimum inhibition concentration results revealed that Ca/CS NPs show a superior antimicrobial effect against specific bacteria and fungi strains commonly found on paper documents compared to the effect of bare chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs). After the deposition of Ca/CS NPs onto the paper the pH level was increased and stabilized, and only a limited amount of microbial colony formation was observed for up to 20 days. Moreover, molecular docking analysis provided a better insight into the antibacterial and antifungal activities of these nanoparticles. The antimicrobial activity of CS NPs and Ca/CS NPs was investigated through their interactions with E. coli DNA gyrase B and C. albicans dihydrofolate reductase. The binding modes and all possible interactions of active sites were confirmed by in silico molecular docking method. This study reports the synthesis of bacterial cellulose (BC) hydrogel sheets and their utilization as a support for silver‑nickel oxide nanocomposites (Ag/NiO). A two-step facile hydrothermal method was employed for the preparation of Ag/NiO, followed by impregnation into BC hydrogel sheets. A 20% Ag/NiO composition was revealed by dry weight analysis. The stability of nanocomposites-Hydrogel was confirmed by Ag+ and Ni2+ ion release study. The catalytic activity of the BC-Ag/NiO was evaluated against chemical reduction of congo red, methyl orange and methylene blue. The reduction reaction followed pseudo first order kinetics and k app values of 0.1147 min−1, 0.1323 min−1 and 0.12989 min−1 were obtained for CR, MO, and MB dyes, respectively. The BC-Ag/NiO catalyst could be easily recovered and re-used in another reaction without centrifugation. The synthesized nanocomposites hydrogel was also tested for its antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus). SB compounds were synthesized from (para, ortho, meta)-phenylenediamine as a cross-linking agent through vanillin. The chemical structure of the formed SB complexes is confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Among the three complexes, para-phenylenediamine (p-SB), possessing a stable resonance structure with the lowest steric repulsion, was obtained in the highest yield of 87%. Hence, the present work focused on reducing the brittle behavior and improving the antimicrobial activity of PLA by reacting it with p-SB. FT-IR investigation revealed the existence of an intermolecular hydrogen bonding between PLA and SB, which led to an increased toughness in the PLA–p-SB complex. This is further confirmed through SEM analysis. The tensile and contact angle measurements determined an improvement in mechanical properties and hydrophobic nature of the PLA–p-SB film. DSC results demonstrated an increase in flexibility, which indicated a 10 °C reduction in glass transition temperature (Tg) of PLA–p-SB films. The antimicrobial activity of the PLA–p-SB films had a maximum of 15 mm zone of inhibition, which was found to be more effective than the neat PLA film. PLA–p-SB coating on Kraft paper showed improved mechanical and barrier properties than neat PLA coatings and could be tried as a possible replacement for conventional synthetic packaging materials. Abstract Filtration is a promising water treatment method to purify drinking water. To develop highly efficient drinking water filter paper, water-resistant cellulose foam paper with a high wet strength property was fabricated using diverse metal oxide (e.g., copper oxide (CuO), zinc oxide (ZnO), and silver oxide (Ag 2 O)) nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were synthesized using the hydrothermal reaction method. Their morphological structures were studied using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The presence of coated nanoparticles on the cellulose foam filter was verified by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) methods. The antibacterial performance of different types of modified cellulose foam filters was studied against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, B. subtilis, and B. cereus strains using the zone of inhibition test. The antibacterial profile of the cellulose foam filter impregnated with Ag 2 O nanoparticles, when tested against different types of bacteria, exhibited higher antibacterial activity than the cellulose foam filter impregnated with ZnO and CuO nanoparticles. Abstract: The preparation method of Silver (Ag)-loaded cellulose paper based on the formation of seed nuclei has been proposed as a functional material with high antibacterial performance. Metal palladium (Pd) was employed for the formation of seed nuclei, followed by sodium potassium tartrate tetrahydrate reduction to create Pd-Ag-cellulose paper. The properties in term of micro morphology, distribution of silver particles, antibacterial activity and silver release behavior were investigated. The results verified the formation of Pd-nucleus on surface of fiber, and revealed that silver particles were steadily deposited on the fibers based on the seed nuclei embedded. Pd-Ag-cellulose paper, comparing with Ag-cellulose paper produced with direct deposition method, exhibited a thick closely silver layer and uniform distribution of silver particles. The antibacterial test indicated that the lethality rate of Pd-Ag-cellulose paper against E. coli is 99.92% which is very close to that of Ag-cellulose paper (99.93%). Nevertheless, the silver release regression equation provided a high slope value (0.075) to Ag-cellulose paper, which explains a rapid release of silver. Pd-Ag-cellulose paper, by contrast, the slope value is only 0.021, and that indicates the silver slower release was achieved. Cellulose-based paper is widely used in cultural communication, art appreciation, and cultural relic protection, but is susceptible to fire and mildew. Traditional protective materials have negative impacts on the appearance, flexibility, and writability of paper, resulting in severely limited applications. Herein, we demonstrate a quick and effective approach for enhancing the flame retardancy, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of cellulose papers by assembling polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) and sodium polyphosphate (PSP). By exploiting hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, PHMB and PSP can assemble into micro-nano protuberances that are deposited on the surface of the paper through a 30 s dip-treating technology. The PHMB/PSP layers promote the formation of char layer when exposed to flame, providing the paper with self-extinguishing property with a limiting oxygen index value of 34.5 % and an 84.0 % reduction in peak heat release rate. Meanwhile, the treated papers exhibit excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus (>99.99 %) and appreciable fungal resistance against T. viride (Grade 1). Importantly, the treatment does not alter the appearance, mechanical stability, and writability of the paper. Owing to the mild conditions and fast processability, this study promotes the wide development of advanced high-performance cellulose paper with combined fire-safety, antibacterial, and antifungal properties for diverse applications. Paper has a visible market-share in hygiene products either in the form of personal hygiene or as food packaging. The designation “hygiene”, though it suggests cleanliness, does not imply antibacterial properties; rather it can be stated that hygiene products do not initiate microorganism growth. Antibacterial products could restrict propagation of pathogenic bacteria either by holding bacteria or by trapping and neutralizing them. Most research in this field has been conducted using textile fibers as a substrate, but the present work uses paper instead. The objective was to produce an antibacterial filter paper capable of trapping and neutralizing pathogenic microorganisms using wood fibers. To produce antibacterial paper, chitosan and nanosilver capped with PAA (polyacrylic acid) were deposited on the fiber surface using a layer-by-layer technique. Samples for the tests were prepared from refined bleached softwood (RBSW) kraft pulp. The deposition of antibacterial agents on fiber as well as paper were monitored using a zeta potential analyzer (ZPA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRS). The minimum requirement for deposition of the agents was a multilayer comprised of eight alternating layers. The deposition onto fiber or paper had no effect on tensile strength or the pore structure of the substrate.

Development of a foam-formed cellulose filter paper with high wet strength was carried out for application as a drinking water filter. The wet strength and antimicrobial activity of cellulose foam paper against several bacteria species ( Bacillus subtilis MTCC 441 (Gram +ve), B. cereus NCDC 240 (Gram +ve), Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCDC 105 (Gram −ve), Klebsiella pneumonia NCDC 138 (Gram −ve), and Escherichia coli MTCC 40 (Gram −ve)) were investigated. The morphology and structure of the cellulose foam paper were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of our study confirmed that glutaraldehyde solution or 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) added to cellulose foam paper pretreated with cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM) provided very high and stable wet strength performance together with excellent antimicrobial properties. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) film featuring with unique two-dimensional structure and well-developed microporosity inheriting from CMPs shows outstanding function for separation and water purification. However, it is still a great challenge to synthesize truly self-standing CMPs films or membranes with large areas and processible intensity. In this work, inspired by surface-assisted polymerization, taking 1,4-diethynylbenzene and 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene as monomer models, we fabricated three soft tissue paper-liked CMPs films with highly mechanical robustness and flexibility through Pd/Cu-catalyzed homocoupling polymerization combined with a facile template method. All the resulting CMPs films consisted of hollow nanotubes whose physical strength and continuity could be tuned by alkynyl monomers. ACMP1 derived from 1,4-diethynylbenzene showed the maximum elongation and tensile strength with a large area of ∼46 cm2. Moreover, ACMP1 was served as an efficient supporter to prepare ACMP1/silver nanoparticles composite by one-step reduction reaction. The silver nanoparticles were uniformly coated the outer surface of nanotubes and retained the original microporosity of ACMP1, endowing the composite good antibacterial activity against E. coli in water. Background and Objectives The aim of this present study is to review the effects of antibacterial properties of oak fruit, inner husk of oak fruit, and Jaftex mouthwash. Subjects and Methods The present study is a narrative literature review conducted using electronic databases such as ISI, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, SID, Magiran, and IranMedex from 1995 to 2019. The keywords that were searched included “Oak fruit”, “Oak tree”, “Jaftex mouthwash”, “Antibacterial”, “Antimicrobial”, and “Microorganism”. Results Review of previous studies showed that oak fruit, Jaft, and Jaftex mouthwash have antimicrobial properties against different microorganisms. Jaftex mouthwash significantly reduced number of microorganisms in mouth, however it had less antimicrobial effect compared to chlorhexidine. Jaftex had a greater inhibitory effect on bacterial growth than Matrica and Persica. Conclusion Oak fruit and Jaft have antibacterial properties which is related to presence of phenols, tannin, proteins. Various studies confirmed antibacterial property of these types of plants. The antibacterial characteristics of Jaftex mouthwash is mainly related to Jaft extract. Jaftex is recommended as an antibacterial mouthwash. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Filter-paper-based water disinfection materials have attracted considerable attention nowadays for their cost-saving and convenience in practical applications. Nevertheless, the poor durability and leakage of the embedded antibacterial agents still exist during water purification processes. In this study, a filter-paper-based water disinfectant was fabricated by combining a tannic acid (TA) cross-linked gelatin (GEL) polymer network with an oxidized cellulose filter paper (OFP) through Schiff base linkages. The resulted OFP-GEL-TA filter paper showed enhanced tensile strength under wet conditions of 7.3-fold compared with the unmodified filter paper. And it maintained the high tensile strength after soaking in water for at least 36 h, indicating excellent durability of the OFP-GEL-TA. Moreover, as a biocompatible natural antibacterial agent, the cross-linker TA endowed the prepared OFP-GEL-TA with favorable antibacterial property. When infected water was filtered through OFP-GEL-TA, the bacterial killing efficiency was as high as 99 % after examining the filtrate via colony counting assay, and it still higher than 98 % after five repeated use. In addition, the quite slowly release behavior of TA further entitled the OFP-GEL-TA with persistent bactericidal efficiency. Paper-based materials have been used in every aspect of social life. However, the current paper-based materials face unprecedented challenges, such as limited lifespan and poor mechanical strength, owing to the deformation after absorbing a large amount of water and bacterial erosion. Herein, superhydrophobic and lyophobic paper was fabricated using internal sizing technology. Hydrophobically modified starch and Ag@SiO 2 particles were added as two functional additives to paper pulp to promote a hierarchical structure formation with low surface energy. Consequently, the water and linseed oil contact angles of the obtained paper reached 154.8° and 138.4°, respectively. The resistance to moisture and water vapor also improved under high-humidity condition, the relative moisture content decreased from 511% to 278% and water vapor transmission rate also decreased from 97.44 to 21.23 g/m2·h. Furthermore, its mechanical properties could also be well maintained with a high fracture stress of 4.91 MPa. Besides, some liquid food, such as honey, easily rolled off the surface without leaving behind any residue, which demonstrated its self-cleaning ability. Furthermore, the modified paper exhibited notable bacterial repellency and antibacterial activity. Lack of safe drinking water is a major concern, mainly in developing countries. Consequently, there is a significant need for affordable technologies to provide clean drinking water. In this paper, two approaches for drinking water disinfection using nanocellulose and the antimicrobial compound phenyl bis -diphenylphosphinato bismuth (III) complex are studied. The first approach investigates the deactivation of bacteria when contaminated water percolates through a filter paper with a microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) coating containing Bi-complex. Antibacterial activity was studied by filtering bacterial broth with a Gram-positive pathogen Staphylococcus aureus as a test strain and measuring live bacteria in the filtrate. The filter composites did not show any sign of instantaneous killing of bacteria, irrespective of the Bi-complex loading or base paper substrate. However, the effluent demonstrated drastic reduction in bacterial population after resting at 37 °C. Bacteria were completely eradicated 24 h after passing through 5 wt% and 10 wt% Bi-coated filters. If also active against locally important drinking water contaminants, this approach could be used for purification of storage water. The second approach uses a Bi-complex loaded nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) membrane. Herein, complete and immediate exclusion of bacteria was achieved in the NFC membrane when bacterial broth was passed through it at 1 bar. The 2.5 wt% Bi-loaded membrane could significantly minimise the risk of biofilm formation, even after 4 days of contact with bacterial broth. The Bi-complex concentration in the filtrate (130.6 ± 1.9 ppb) from the 2.5 wt% Bi-loaded microfilter was shown to be non-toxic to murine fibroblast cells. This study outlines the proof of concept of two sustainable prototypes for stored or immediate drinking water purification, but the approach would need to be extended to a broader range of relevant contaminating pathogens of drinking water to fully understand its utility.
