Photo-stimuli-responsive therapeutic nanomaterials have gained widespread attention as frontline materials for biomedical applications. The photoactivation strategies are classified as single-modality (based on either reactive oxygen species (ROS)-based photodynamic therapy (PDT), hyperthermia-based photothermal therapy (PTT)), or dual-modality (which combines PDT and PTT). Due to its minimal invasiveness, phototherapy has been extensively applied as an efficient therapeutic platform for many diseases, including skin cancers. However, extensive implementation of phototherapy to address the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections remains challenging. This review focuses on copper sulfide (CuS) nanomaterials as efficient and cost-effective PDT and PTT therapeutic nanomaterials with antibacterial activity. The features and merits of CuS nanomaterials as therapeutics are compared to those of other nanomaterials. Control of the dimensions and morphological complexity of CuS nanomaterials through judicious synthesis is then introduced. Both the in vitro antibacterial activity and the in vivo therapeutic effect of CuS nanomaterials and derivative nanocomposites composed of 2D nanomaterials, polymers, metals, metal oxides, and proteins are described in detail. Finally, the perspective of photo-stimuli-responsive CuS nanomaterials for future clinical antibacterial applications is highlighted. This review illustrates that CuS nanomaterials are highly effective, low-toxic, and environmentally friendly antibacterial agents or platform nanomaterials for combatting MDR bacterial infections. The material of CuS/polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan (CuS/PVACS) was prepared with a novel synthesis analysis. The crystallinity, morphological characteristics, and photocatalytic performance of the nano-materials were investigated by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy X-ray photoelectron, and UV–vis spectrophotometry. The band gap values (Eg) was found as 2.50, and 2.04 eV for CuS, and CuS/PVACS nano-catalyst, respectively. The photo-degradation amount of the malachite green solutions which were degraded by CuS/PVACS in the UV-irradiation in 60 min was above 96.51%. The antibacterial properties of the CuS/PVACS has been evaluated versus (G+/G-) bacteria. The results of antibacterial performance indicated that CuS/PVACS nanocomposites have bacteriostatic behavior versus Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas syringae , Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. • Heterojunction was constructed by between CuS and protonated g-C3N4 via electrostatic adsorption. • The photothermal property of CuS/PCN increased with the increasing of the content of CuS. • The photocatalytic ability of CuS/PCN was enhanced due to the heterojunction construction. • The CuS/PCN exhibited efficiently bacteria-killing under visible light irradiation for 20 min. As the environment deterioration is becoming more serious, bacterial pollution is threatening the health of human beings. Hence, it is vital to develop rapid and safe sterilization strategy. Herein, CuS / protonated g-C 3 N 4 (CuS/PCN) composites were synthesized by simple hydrothermal method and electrostatic adsorption. This heterostructured system exhibited enhanced photocatalytic properties under visible light compared with CuS or g-C 3 N 4 alone, ascribing to the rapid separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Meanwhile, the obvious photothermal effects of CuS/PCN were achieved and the temperature increased with the increased amount of CuS in the composites due to the more light absorption. However, when the CuS content is more than 10 %, photocurrent density is decreased with increasing the amount of CuS, indicating the increased recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. When the CuS content is 20 %, the composite can perform the optimized synergistic effects of both photothermal action and photocatalysis under light irradiation for 20 min. The corresponding bacteria-killing efficiency against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli is 98.23 % and 99.16 %, respectively. The underlying mechanism is that the bacterial membrane can be weakened by reactive oxygen species and bacterial activities are inhibited by hyperthermia. • CuS NPs have been embedded in HKUST-1 via simple in-situ sulfuration. • HKUST-1 provided a suitable framework for CuS NPs to work efficiently. • CuS@HKUST-1 exhibited prominent photothermal performance under NIR light. • CuS@HKUST-1 showed an effective photocatalytic performance under NIR light. • CuS@HKUST-1 showed antibacterial efficacy of 99.7 % within 20 min NIR irradiation. Some new kinds of antibiotics-free antibacterial agents are required to deal with bacterial infections due to the occurrence of drug-resistance. In this work, Cu-based metal-organic framework (HKUST-1) embedded with CuS NPs were fabricated via a simple in-situ sulfuration process. The synthesized MOFs exhibited an highly effective disinfection efficacy of 99.70 % and 99.80 % against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli within 20 min irradiation of near-infrared (NIR) light, respectively, which was ascribed to the cooperative effects of photodynamic and photothermal effects of the composites. A certain amount of Cu2+ ions of the MOFs were reacted to form CuS NPs, which endowed this composite with outstanding photocatalytic and photothermal performance during NIR light irradiation. Moreover, HKUST-1 that composed of low toxic organic ligand 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC) coordinating copper ions could be a controllable carrier that imposed certain constraint on the NPs. • Superhydrophobic CuS cotton fabric was prepared for multifunctional applications. • The fabric achieved oil/water separation with high efficiency and good reusability. • The fabric held excellent photocatalytic performance and antibacterial activity. A simple and low-cost fabrication of superhydrophobic cotton fabric has been reported by coating CuS on the fabric surface and subsequent stearic acid modification for multifunctional applications. The fabricated fabric showing superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity was used for oil/water separation with high separation efficiency over 98% and desirable recyclability. Moreover, the fabric was active in degrading methylene blue aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. Importantly, the fabric was proved to possess excellent antibacterial activities against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. These attractive performances presented in this work make the fabric a very promising candidate for actual wastewater treatment on a large scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
