GENOCIDE , *JEWS , *RACISM , *MOTIVATION (Psychology) ,WESTERN countries - Abstract
This contribution proposes to analyse the conflict that resulted from the events of 7 October 2023, involving the State of Israel, Palestine and other Middle Eastern states. Offering various bibliographical insights, reflections are made on the nature of these attacks by outlining the historical and legal context of the State of Israel, analysing its legitimacy, past wars and current threats. It also delves into the concept of 'genocide' as applied to the situation in Gaza and, conversely, into the emerging global anti-Semitism fuelled by an anti-Israel narrative shared by many Western countries. It finally highlights the need to address the risk of discrimination against Jews - motivated not religiously or racially, as in the past, but on the basis of 'humanitarian' and 'inclusive' principles. Denouncing this dangerous regression is an important task for anyone who rejects racism and has not forgotten the lesson of the Shoah. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Not only did John Paul II express his political and social ideas through Encyclicals and speeches, but also through diplomacy and various actions loaded with symbolism. These actions were aimed at showing as an example to the members of both religions, the underlying peace between their religious leaders. From the above, although many biographical data and achievements have been taken into account by Wojtyla's biographers, the rapprochement generated between Christians and Jews is perhaps one of the least deepened points in the historical reflections on Wojtyla's work. JEWISH children , *JEWISH women , *MASS murder , *JEWISH families , *PERSECUTION of Jews , *SMUGGLING , *SOLIDARITY - Abstract
Drawing on Althusser's concept of interpellation, various newspaper articles, and extensive memoir and autobiographical material, the author explores the "introjection" of Nazi anti-Semitic ideology among Carinthian Slovenes, focusing on the period between 1933 and 1941. The author pays particular attention to Carinthian Slovenes' reactions to the violence against and the persecution and removal of (not only) the Jewish population from public, social and economic life, whereby she notes that Nazi anti-Semitic ideology also aroused dissent and resistance. This is illustrated through several examples of solidarity and support, such as friendly transgenerational ties, the "first anti-Hitler action" of the local women against the "Aryanisation" of the Jewish store and the persecution of its owners -- the Scharfberg family -- from Eisenkappel/Železna kapla, hiding a Jewish child in the family environment, or offering assistance in escaping, which included "smuggling" the expropriated merchant couple -- the Dicksteins -- from Ferlach/Borovlje over the border to Yugoslavia, from where they managed to escape to Palestine. The testimonials by Carinthian Slovenes speak of the pogroms against Jews in November 1938, which they had personally witnessed, the extreme brutality of violence, and the mass murders of Jews on the battlefield, in prisons, and elsewhere. In Jožef Šorli's case, the crimes against the Jews in Poland triggered his decision to desert the Wehrmacht and join the Partisans. Carinthian Slovenes often linked the "fate" of Jews to their own fate -- be it expected or real. They spoke of the burning on 30 April 1938 of school textbooks said to be threatening the "purity of the Aryan spirit" and of the dehumanising associative link between the Jews and the Slavs/Slovenes, the retarded, the crippled. With her book of testimonies, Ana Jug-Olip, a survivor of the Ravensbrück women's concentration camp, builds up a literary monument to not only the Slovene women (and men) of Carinthia, but also to the Jewish women, the Romani women, and their children. The article demonstrates that autobiographical sources constitute an important corrective to the press of the time, especially to the weekly Koroški Slovenec, which up until its closedown in March 1941 advocated strongly anti-Semitic views, partly drawn from the Nazi ideological arsenal. The article thus disproves the belief that in the texts or statements of Carinthian Slovenes of the time, "one would search in vain for views expressing solidarity with the persecuted Jews". - Abstract
We live increasingly, within political and social cultures whose language oppose racism and antisemitism and discrimination. At the same time racism continues to exist and its effects continue to reverberate in subtle or more obvious ways. This paper acknowledges the social, political, historical reality which are beyond the question of racism and anti-semitism. However, it acknowledges too that the question of racism goes far from just the external reality and cannot be approached as an area of applied psychoanalysis. Internal racism is an universal feature of the human mind, and from an external world perspective moves inward the inner realm of the psychic organization. The racist internal elements runs outside and parallel to ordinary conscious discourse. We are dealing at a preverbal level, that almost never succeed in becoming verbal. In the consciousness we are never dealing with what appear obvious, that is equality, but we rather switch to the acting out, subtlety discriminating the self and the other who is different from the self, the not-self. So, unconsciously, we reach, and we convey the inequality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PHILOSOPHY of history , *PHILOSOPHY of science , *HUMANITIES ,BOMBARDMENT of Hiroshima, Japan, 1945 - Abstract
When, on August 6, 1945, the scientists of the German atomic project led by physicist Werner Heisenberg heard the news from their confinement in Farm Hall, England, that the United States had dropped a nuclear bomb that destroyed Hiroshima, the construction of history began: Heisenberg's version in his intellectual autobiography was that he knew the project was unviable in the short and medium term and, therefore, there was no risk in advancing the research. Following Benjamin's theses on the philosophy of history, I will brush against this construction of the history of science to bring to light several reasons that dismantle this construction. To do this I will resort to the philosophy of science of Popper, Kuhn and Lakatos and Marcuse's criticism of technological rationality. The aim is threefold: to question the vision of science held by Heisenberg, to show the influence of the great scientific-technological projects on the way of thinking and acting of individuals and to bridge the two abysses denounced by the physicist and novelist C. P. Snow, one between sciences and humanities and the other between those who have specialized knowledge and those who do not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the medieval Marian collection Los Milagros de Nuestra Señora (Miracles of Our Lady) by Gonzalo de Berceo, the Milagro de Teófilo (The Miracle of Teophilus) is the most extensive and elaborate. The poem, which enjoyed wide circulation in other European vernacular languages, contains a moralizing didactic message aimed at the readership in order to prevent any contact with the Devil and his followers. In this case, it is a Jew who acts as an intermediary between Teófilo and Satan. However, whereas the rest of the European versions portray anti-Semitic features on the Jewish character influenced by popular folklore, such as embodying an evil animal-like creature involved in diabolical practices, these references are absent in Berceo’s version. Berceo’s position with respect to the Jew stands out as one based essentially on anti-Jewish traits inherited from Patristic and other traditional clerical thought. Hence, it lacks anthropological and racial prejudices common to anti-Semitism in the rest of Europe and which were unknown in the Iberian Peninsula imaginary at least for the following two centuries.

This text focuses on Olivia Manning’s portrayal of Bucharest in The Great Fortune and The Spoilt City, the first two novels of The Balkan Trilogy set between the autumns of 1939 and 1940, when the writer lives in the city. Manning captures the atmosphere of the capital on the threshold of war.The aim of the article is to show through these two novels how the tensions suffered by the country are reflected in the urban fabric of the city. The internal tensions stemming from political radicalism, anti-Semitism and the economic crisis, and the external tensions caused by the war that has begun in Europe. We follow their evolution through the eyes of the protagonist in the different spaces of a convulsed city that is becoming hostile. In order to detect the spaces where this hostility manifests itself, methodological support is provided, among others, by elements of analysis from Pierre Sansot’s Poétique de la ville, the work of Roland Barthes, Sémiologie et urbanisme, Yi FuTuan’s concepts in Topophilia, Marc Augé’s Non-lieux and Eugenia Popeanga’s works La ciudad en obras y La ciudad hostil.

The article addresses the theme of fascism in contemporary times, based on the elements of anti-Semitism described by Adorno and Horkheimer in 1947 and through the empirical evidence that currently marks the adhesion of Brazilian society to authoritarian and extremist movements. Theoretical discussion and the analysis of empirical situations allow us to affirm the existance of a Brazilian fascism, with very peculiar forms of adherence and expression. The issue of Fake News is taken as an object of analysis of a process that has been increasingly worrying, both in terms of the significant number of people, who contribute decisively to its dissemination, and in terms of the composition of the resistance forces established by society. in the face of the danger that such news represents to democracy, to the formation of society, to the future of humanity and the planet, as a whole. CENSORSHIP , *DOCKS , *POLICE attitudes - Abstract
Of all the actions of the Irish Censorship of Publications Board, one of the most often cited, but least critically examined, is the suppression of Samuel Beckett's More Pricks Than Kicks (1934). This article aims to recover a fuller picture of how censorship of More Pricks affected Beckett, particularly in his attitudes to the biopolitical policing of ethnonational identity. To do so, it examines Beckett's involvement in Harry Sinclair's 1937 libel action against Oliver St John Gogarty, and the crucial role that the suppression of More Pricks played in discrediting Beckett as a witness. In contrast to previous, "personal" readings of the trial, it explores how the libellous passages of Gogarty's As I Was Going Down Sackville Street (1937) offered an anti-Semitic portrait of Sinclair and his family in which ethnic alterity and sexual deviance are presented as synonymous, and how Gogarty's barrister appropriated this rhetorical strategy to target Beckett. In the process, it offers a deep contextualisation of Beckett's anti-natalism, anti-nationalism, and longstanding aversion to censorship, by emphasising their relationship to his experiences of the operation of biopolitics in the emergent Free State and a wider European context during the trial and its aftermath. This article examines Italian-Americans' reaction to the Fascist embrace of anti- Semitism in 1938, primarily by means of a perusal of the Italian-language press in the U.S. It argues that the newcomers and their offspring usually failed to distance themselves from the regime's racial turn because of pre-existing rivalries and resentment towards U.S. Jews. It also holds that, although Italian- Americans hardly subscribed to the Fascist ideology, which cannot be con- fined to anti-Jewish theories only, the notion that the Italian people were a race of their own helped the immigrants and their descendants strengthen a sense of ethnic identity based on their common national extraction and, thus, further allowed for the penetration of anti-Semitic propaganda into the Little Italies. It looks specifically at two foremost publications of the Jesuit press in Rome and New York: Civiltà Cattolica and America, respectively. The comparative approach helps to comprehend the variety of factors behind editorial choices: readership, political context, Vatican directions, censorship, and silence. Jesuits on both sides of the Atlantic interpreted the anti-Semitic turn of the Fascist regime as an imitation of Nazi Germany and with the persistent hope that Italian policies would be milder and more 'civilized'. The shaping of the myth of the 'good Italian' was an early process in which Church voices, including the Pope himself, took a significant part. This article argues that despite contextual differences, both Jesuit publications demonstrated a transnational pattern of Catholic relation to the Jews: endorsing Pius XI's statements, they spoke out against racism but did not extend their condemnations to a full rejection of anti-Semitism in its religious and secular components. The disapproval of Italy's Racial Laws was not a defense of the Jews of Italy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RACISM , *NAZI Germany, 1933-1945 , *CULTURAL history , *ANTISEMITISM ,FASCISM in Italy - Abstract
One of Michele Sarfatti's greatest accomplishments has been to challenge the notion that there was a fundamental difference between the biological racism predominant in Nazi Germany and the 'cultural racism' of Fascist Italy. I examine how this dichotomy took shape and the meaning it acquired over time. My basic argument is that this division is the result of dialogue between Italian and German population experts during the interwar period, and that making a sharp distinction between a 'German' and an 'Italian' style of racism helped them to construct their own identities. In other words, the debate on racism was a vehicle for defining what it meant to be a 'true' Nazi or Fascist. In this way, differences in racist ideology can be understood as a product of struggles over meaning. Ultimately, my aim is to de-essentialize the meaning of race in research on both Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This special issue of the Journal of Modern Italian Studies, edited by Annalisa Capristo and Ernest Ialongo, marks the 80th anniversary of the implementation of the Racial Laws in Fascist Italy. It is an opportunity to assess the evolution of the historical literature on Fascist anti-Semitism and to mark future directions for research, but also to pay homage to Michele Sarfatti, who was critical in the development of the current state of the historiography on the subject. Where the earlier work, before the 1980s, was founded on the idea of 'Italiani brava gente', wherein Italy's role was downplayed in the persecution of the Jews and in the Holocaust, that Italians were simply too humane to have participated in such horrific events, Sarfatti's work launched a veritable revolution in the field, which dismantled all the tenets of the original consensus. This introduction surveys these developments, and summarizes the contributions of the varied authors published here who continue to challenge old truths and bring us closer to a more full and accurate understanding of Fascist anti-Semitism. 36. ANTI-SEMITISM AND HISTORY: ON THE ROLE OF “WORLD JUDAISM" IN HEIDEGGER'S HISTORY OF BEING.

- Abstract
Since their publication in early 2014, Martin Heidegger's Black Notebooks have prompted a debate both in academia and in public intellectual circles. Allegedly these notebooks show how Heidegger sympathized with anti-Semitism and National Socialism. On the basis of David Nirenberg's analysis in his book Anti-Judaism: the Western Tradition, 1 discuss whether "anti-Judaism" has a real referent or if, rather, anti-Judaism is a worldview where the meaning of "the Jews" represents a function in the self-understanding of those who speak of "Jew" or "being Jewish," although this meaning lacks any real referent. What is here referred to as 'real or factual reference' represents a constant problem in philosophy. If philosophy always had to refer to something real, then it would be a particular science like biology. The "object" of philosophy, however, seems to be a philosophical problem. In this case, therefore, the question is whether or not Heidegger's philosophical discourse in the Black Notebooks corresponds to something in the world. In short, it all boils down to defining the type of anti-Semitism expressed in the Black Notebooks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Dreyfus affaire is emblematic of the double-edged dimension of law: first weapon to hit the common enemy Dreyfus, then defensive tool wielded by intellectuals engaged – with Zola in the front row – to seek justice and the triumph of truth. Raniero Paulucci di Calboli, working in Paris in that period, became well aware of the importance of this affaire. This study investigates the trials through his diary, written in 1898 and his personal papers conserved from 1897 (and now hold in the library “A. Saffi” in Forlì). It also shows the role played by lawyers, intellectuals and press, and the influence of public opinion, in this complex story which keeps causing controversy.

In this article we have studied the madness in John Chrysostom’s Commentary on Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist. We have focused on the author’s disapproval of the behaviour of the Jewish people, of those who deviate from the faith, and of those who feel over-attachment to material goods. In all three cases, mental illness is to blame for their heretical demeanour.

When, on August 6, 1945, the scientists ofthe German atomic project led by physicist Werner Heisenberg heard the news from their confinement in Farm Hall, England, that the United States had dropped a nuclear bomb that destroyed Hiroshima, the construction of history began: Heisenberg's version in his intellectual autobiography was that he knew the project was unviable in the short and medium term and, therefore, there was no risk in advancing the research.

Mundo israelita. Abstract The purpose of this article is to analyze the discourse on race in Tacuara and its derived groupings, in the context of the transnational mutations of racism after the second post-war period. In the first part of the paper, we investigated the figures of anti-Semitism in the Movimiento Nacionalista Tacuara (MNT), the Movimiento Nueva Argentina (MNA) and the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario Tacuara (MNRT), with positions on the "Jewish question" that oscillated between biological racism, culturalist racism, anti-Zionism and criticism of racial discrimination. In the second part, we study the reception of the categories of race, class and third world in the two fractions that divided the MNRT. To develop these arguments, we examine the political press of these organizations, such as Tacuara. Vocero de la juventud nacionalista, the bulletin Ofensiva, Barricada del nacionalismo revolucionario, Tacuara del manchón and Nueva Argentina. The sample is supplemented by other documents from the Direction of Intelligence of the Police of the Province of Buenos Aires (DIPBA), an interview with MNA from Vea y Lea magazine, weeklies such as Primera Plana, Panorama and Mundo Israelita.

This paper affords an insight into an important phenomenon related to the current worldwide increase in xenophobic behavior. In the past as well as in the present, the issue of anti-Semitism was the topic to be discussed; we note the dangers of the return and growth of populist and racist political parties and social movements while observing similar discussions today, especially in Eastern Europe (including Slovakia). They are linked to the current anti-vaccination and anti-war movements. This study had three objectives: (1) To present the critical anti-Semitic narratives that survived communism and were re-mediated after the establishment of an independent Slovakia in 1993; (2) to identify inherited mechanisms that continue to determine the forms of negative attitudes of Slovaks towards Jews; (3) to identify and analyze current narratives representing new forms of digital anti-Semitism in the current disinformation media in Slovakia. This paper employs a structured interview method with thirteen Slovak multi-disciplinary experts to research crucial inherited and current anti-Semitic narratives. Our research identified ten anti-Semitic narratives that remain in the current disinformation media. The research also points to two former mechanisms from the communist era that still influence the attitudes of Slovaks towards Jews. This also influences the nature of contemporary anti-Semitism: the generational influence, under which intolerant attitudes pass from generation to generation, and the influence of (inherited) power and economic “remorse”, accompanied by the common notion of the “exploitation” of countries (including Slovakia) by the Jewish community. Finally, four new and current narratives have been identified through structured interviews with experts, determining the nature of current digital anti-Semitism.

This article examines the shifting place accorded to the Jews of Algeria within conceptions of Algerian nationhood articulated by Algerian nationalists – and notably those of Messalist tendencies – from the 1930s to the 1980s. This is contextualized within Algerian anticolonial nationalists’ attachment to the notion of an Arab-Muslim identity and the Arab-Muslim world, and their longstanding support for the Palestinian cause. Based on a range of underused or unpublished archive material produced by the Paris police, colonial intelligence and the archives of nationalist leader Messali Hadj, the article demonstrates how a more inclusive vision of Algerian nationhood, and a more conciliatory position towards the state of Israel, could be strategically deployed at moments of political isolation.
