In the present work, Lewis acid catalyzed reactions have been carried out between mefenamic acid, substituted aldehyde and semicarbazide in the presence of ZnCl2 to give the final compounds (E)-N-(2-(5-((substitutedene)amino)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)phenyl)-2,3-dimethylaniline, A. The synthesized compounds have been characterized by IR, ¹H NMR, 13C NMR, mass spectral studies and biologically screened for the antimicrobial, antitubercular and antimalarial activities. Among the screened molecules, the molecules A1, A3, A4, A6, A8, A9, A10 show activity against different antibacterial species. The compounds, active against different antifugal species are A3, A7, A8, A9 against C. albicans, compound A3 is active against A. niger. Whereas, compound A9 shows good antimycobacterial activity. Complexes of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) were synthesized from Schiff base 2-{[(2-aminophenyl)imino]methyl}phenol and metformin. The authenticity of the transition metal complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements, as well as spectroscopic (IR, electronic) and thermal studies. IR spectral studies revealed the existence of the ligands in the amine form in the solid state. The magnetic and electronic spectral studies suggest an octahedral geometry for all the complexes. The metformin acts as a bidentate ligand and Schiff base of o-phynelendiamine and salicylaldehyde acts as a tridentate ligand. Antimicrobial screening of the Schiff base, metformin and transition metal complexes were determined against the bacteria Escherichia coli and Bacillus megaterium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2-(p-Acetylaminobenzenesulfonylamido)-substituted benzothiazoles were prepared from 2-amino-substituted benzothiazoles and p-acetamidobenzenesulfonyl chloride using a mixture of pyridine and Ac2O, which formed an electrophilic N-acetyl- pyridinium complex facilitating condensation to give the desired products by removal of HCl. 2-[4-(Substituted benzothiazol-2-yl)aminosulfonylanilino]pyridine-3-carboxylic acids (synthesized from 2-chloropyridine-3-carboxylic acid and the corresponding substituted 2-(p-aminobenzenesulfonylamido)benzothiazole in 2-ethoxyethanol using Cu-powder and K2CO3) were then converted to acid chlorides, which on further reaction with piperazine and 4-methoxyphenylpiperazine yielded the corresponding 2-[4-(substituted benzothiazol-2-yl)amino-sulfonyl]anilino-3-(piperazinocarbonyl) pyridine and 2-[4-(substituted benzothiazol-2-yl)amino-sulfonyl]anilino-3-[(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazin-1-yl-carbonyl]pyridine. The structures of the new compounds have been established on the basis of their elemental analyses as well as IR, 1H NMR, and mass-spectral data. The mixed-ligand complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Co(II), Fe(II), Mn(II), and Cd(II) with 2,2′-bipyridylamine (Bipy-amine) and a Schiff base (H2SB) were prepared and characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, magnetic measurements, infrared spectra, electronic spectra and thermogravimetric analyses. An octahedral geometry has been assigned to all of the prepared complexes. The antimicrobial activities of the complexes were tested against bacteria, yeast and fungi and the results are discussed. The stem bark of Ficus bengalensis is reported to have antimicrobial activity, we planned our work as to evaluate and compare antimicrobial activity of alcoholic extracts of stem bark of F. bengalensis by cup and plate method collected from three different geographical regions viz. Delhi, Gujarat and Uttaranchal. The activity of all the extracts at the dose level 1000 μg/ml, 500 μg/ml and 100 μg/ml were found to be quiet different and all the extracts showed that activity is varied as geography and environmental conditions are changed.
