International audience; We introduce a framework for quantifying random matrix behavior of 2d CFTs and AdS$_3$ quantum gravity. We present a 2d CFT trace formula, precisely analogous to the Gutzwiller trace formula for chaotic quantum systems, which originates from the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ spectral decomposition of the Virasoro primary density of states. An analogy to Berry's diagonal approximation allows us to extract spectral statistics of individual 2d CFTs by coarse-graining, and to identify signatures of chaos and random matrix universality. This leads to a necessary and sufficient condition for a 2d CFT to display a linear ramp in its coarse-grained spectral form factor. Turning to gravity, AdS$_3$ torus wormholes are cleanly interpreted as diagonal projections of squared partition functions of microscopic 2d CFTs. The projection makes use of Hecke operators. The Cotler-Jensen wormhole of AdS$_3$ pure gravity is shown to be extremal among wormhole amplitudes: it is the minimal completion of the random matrix theory correlator compatible with Virasoro symmetry and $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-invariance. We call this MaxRMT: the maximal realization of random matrix universality consistent with the necessary symmetries. Completeness of the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ spectral decomposition as a trace formula allows us to factorize the Cotler-Jensen wormhole, extracting the microscopic object $Z_{\rm RMT}(\tau)$ from the coarse-grained product. This captures details of the spectrum of BTZ black hole microstates. $Z_{\rm RMT}(\tau)$ may be interpreted as an AdS$_3$ half-wormhole. We discuss its implications for the dual CFT and modular bootstrap at large central charge.

We construct and analyze the domain wall solution in $D=11$ supergravity connecting the $N=1$, AdS$_4\times S_{\rm squashed}^7$ vacuum to the $N=8$, AdS$_4\times S_{\rm round}^7$ vacuum. This domain wall describes the holographic renormalization group flow from an ${\rm Sp}(2)\times {\rm Sp}(1)$ symmetric UV fixed point to the ${\rm SO}(8)$ symmetric IR fixed point. It breaks all supersymmetries which are (partially) restored at its endpoints. We show how recent techniques from exceptional field theory allow us to compute the quadratic couplings of all Kaluza-Klein fluctuations around the domain wall background, encoding all two-point correlators along the holographic RG flow., 19 pages, 6 figures

Internal intervals spanned by finite ranges of a conformal coordinate $z$ and terminating at a pair of singularities are a common feature of many string compactifications with broken supersymmetry. The squared masses emerging in lower-dimensional Minkowski spaces are then eigenvalues of Schr\"odinger-like operators, whose potentials have double poles at the ends of the intervals. For one-component systems, the possible self-adjoint extensions of Schr\"odinger operators are described by points in $AdS_3 \times S^1$, and those corresponding to independent boundary conditions at the ends of the intervals by points on the boundary of $AdS_3$. The perturbative stability of compactifications to Minkowski space time depends, in general, on these choices of self-adjoint extensions. We apply this setup to the orientifold vacua driven by the ``tadpole potential'' $V=T \ e^{\,\frac{3}{2}\,\phi}$ and find, in nine dimensions, a massive scalar spectrum, a unique choice of boundary conditions with stable tensor modes and a massless graviton, and a wide range of choices leading to massless and/or massive vector modes., Comment: 49 pages, LaTeX, 13 figures. We compute all worldsheet three-point functions involving spectrally-flowed operators in chiral multiplets of the space-time theory for strings in AdS$_3\times$S$^3\times$T$^4$, thus completing the analysis of the full AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ chiral ring. We make use of techniques recently developed for the bosonic sector, based on holomorphic covering maps from the worldsheet to the AdS$_3$ boundary. We highlight the role of the so-called series identifications when dealing with the complications originated by picture-changing spectrally-flowed states. We find an exact agreement with the predictions from the holographic CFT at the symmetric orbifold point, including both extremal and non-extremal correlators., 27 pages

We study the $S^1\times\Sigma_{\mathfrak g}$ topologically twisted index and the squashed sphere partition function of various 3d $\mathcal N\geq2$ holographic superconformal field theories arising from M2-branes. Employing numerical techniques in combination with well-motivated conjectures we provide compact closed-form expressions valid to all orders in the perturbative $1/N$ expansion for these observables. We also discuss the holographic implications of our results for the topologically twisted index for the dual M-theory Euclidean path integral around asymptotically AdS$_4$ solutions of 11d supergravity. In Lorentzian signature this leads to a prediction for the corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a class of static asymptotically AdS$_4$ BPS black holes., Comment: v1: p.57

Classical gravity coupled to a CFT$_4$ (matter) is considered. The effect of the quantum dynamics of matter on gravity is studied around maximally symmetric spaces (flat, de Sitter and Anti de Sitter). The structure of the graviton propagator is modified and non-trivial poles appear due to matter quantum effects. The position and residues of such poles are mapped as a function of the relevant parameters, the central charge of the CFT$_4$, the two $R^2$ couplings of gravity as well as the curvature of the background space-time. The instabilities induced are determined. Such instabilities can be important in cosmology as they trigger the departure from de Sitter space and in some regions of parameters are more important than the well-known scalar instabilities. Based on Quantum Gravity arguments, it has been suggested that all kinetic terms of light particles below the UV cut-off could arise in the IR via quantum (loop) corrections. These loop corrections involve infinite towers of states becoming light (e.g. Kaluza-Klein or string towers). We study implications of this Emergence Proposal for fundamental scales in the Standard Model (SM). In this scheme all Yukawa couplings are of order one in the UV and small Yukawas for lighter generations appear via large anomalous dimensions induced by the towers of states. Thus, the observed hierarchies of quark and lepton masses are a reflection of the structure of towers of states that lie below the Quantum Gravity scale, $\Lambda_{\text{QG}}$. Small Dirac neutrino masses consistent with experimental observation appear due to the existence of a tower of SM singlet states of mass $m_{0}\simeq Y_{\nu_3}M_p\simeq 7\times 10^5$ GeV, opening up a new extra dimension, while the UV cut-off occurs at $\Lambda_{\text{QG}}\lesssim 10^{14}$ GeV. Additional constraints relating the Electro-Weak (EW) and cosmological constant (c.c.) scales (denoted $M_{\text{EW}}$ and $V_0$) appear if the Swampland condition $m_{\nu_1}\lesssim V_0^{1/4}$ is imposed (with $\nu_1$ denoting the lightest neutrino), which itself arises upon applying the AdS non-SUSY Conjecture or the AdS/dS Distance Conjecture to the 3d vacua from circle compactifications of the SM. In particular, the EW scale and that of the extra dimension fulfill ${m_0 \, M_{\text{EW}}\lesssim 10^{2}\, V_0^{1/4}M_p}$, thus relating the EW hierarchy problem to that of the c.c. Hence, all fundamental scales may be written as powers of the c.c., i.e. $m_{\bullet}\sim V_0^\delta M_p^{1-4\delta}$. We show how to use Exceptional Field Theory to compute the full Kaluza-Klein spectra of 10- and 11-dimensional supergravity around deformations of backgrounds of maximal gauged supergravity by scalar modes that do not form part of the consistent truncation. This includes deformations of AdS$_4 \times S^7$ and AdS$_5 \times S^5$ by modes that are not part of the ${\cal N}=8$ supermultiplet. As an application, we compute the full Kaluza-Klein spectrum of the ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=0$ squashed $S^7$. We perform a systematic study of integrated four-point functions of half-BPS operators in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $SU(N)$. These observables, defined by a certain spacetime integral of $\langle\mathcal{O}_2\mathcal{O}_2\mathcal{O}_p\mathcal{O}_p\rangle$ where $\mathcal{O}_p$ is a superconformal primary of charge $p$, are known to be computable by supersymmetric localization, yet are non-trivial functions of the complexified gauge coupling $\tau$. We find explicit and remarkably simple results for several classes of these observables, exactly as a function of $N$ and $\tau$. Their physical and formal properties are greatly illuminated upon employing the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ spectral decomposition: in this S-duality-invariant eigenbasis, the integrated correlators are fixed simply by polynomials in the spectral parameter. These polynomials are determined recursively by linear algebraic equations relating different $N$ and $p$, such that all integrated correlators are ultimately fixed in terms of the integrated stress tensor multiplets in the $SU(2)$ theory. Our computations include the full matrix of integrated correlators at low values of $p$, and a certain infinite class involving operators of arbitrary $p$. The latter satisfy an open lattice chain equation for all $N$, reminiscent of the Toda equation obeyed by extremal correlators in $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal theories. We compute ensemble averages of these observables and analyze our solutions at large $N$, confirming and predicting features of semiclassical AdS$_5\, \times$ S$^5$ supergravity amplitudes., Comment: 42+24 pages

In four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $SU(N)$, we present a closed-form solution for a family of integrated four-point functions involving stress tensor multiplet composites of arbitrary R-charge. These integrated correlators are shown to be equivalent to a one-dimensional semi-infinite lattice of harmonic oscillators with nearest-neighbor interactions, evolving over the fundamental domain of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. The solution, exceptionally simple in an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-invariant eigenbasis, is exact in the R-charge $p$, rank $N$, and complexified gauge coupling $\tau$. This permits a systematic and non-perturbative large charge expansion for any $N$ and $\tau$. Especially novel is a double-scaled "gravity regime" in which $p \sim N^2 \gg 1$, holographically dual to a large charge regime of semiclassical type IIB string theory in AdS$_5\, \times$ S$^5$. Our results in this limit provide a holographic computation of integrated semiclassical string amplitudes at arbitrary string coupling, including an emergent string scale with a large charge dressing factor. We compare to extremal correlators in superconformal QCD, for which we predict new genus expansions at large charge scaling with $N$., Comment: 31 pages + appendices

We explore the holographic duality between string theory in backgrounds that interpolate between asymptotically linear dilaton spacetime in the UV and $AdS_3$ in the IR, and single-trace $T\bar T$ deformed CFT. In particular, we explain how the deformation of states in the boundary theory is reflected in the bulk geometry, and show that the coupling above which the deformed energy of the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ invariant ground state of the IR CFT becomes complex is a maximal coupling., Comment: 17 pages

We present the construction of several microstate geometries of the supersymmetric D1-D5-P black hole in which, within six-dimensional supergravity, the momentum charge is carried by a vector field. The fully backreacted geometries are smooth and horizonless: They are asymptotically AdS$_3 \times S^3$ with an AdS$_2$ throat that smoothly caps off. We propose a holographic dual for these bulk solutions and discuss their extension to asymptotically flat space. In addition, we present several uplifts of the full six-dimensional supersymmetric ansatz to ten-dimensions. In particular, we show that there exists a frame in which geometries based on vector field momentum carriers are entirely in the NS-sector of supergravity, making them possible starting points for the exploration of stringy black-hole microstates., 41+24 pages, 5 figures

We construct large families of supergravity solutions that are asymptotic to AdS$_2$ and terminate with a cap that is singular in two dimensions but smooth in higher dimensions. These solutions break supersymmetry and conformal invariance. We list arguments suggesting that they correspond to finite-energy excitations in empty AdS$_2$ that back-react on the geometry by inducing non-trivial bubbling topology. They are constructed from the novel technique associated with the Ernst formalism for AdS$_D\times\mathcal{C}$ solitons in supergravity \cite{Bah:2022pdn}. The technique is applied to $D=2$ in M-theory with $\mathcal{C}=\,$S$^3\times$T$^6$. The directions of $\mathcal{C}$ degenerate smoothly as a chain of bolts which ends the spacetime in the IR and generates non-supersymmetric bubbles supported by M2-brane flux. Some specific solutions have ``flat'' directions where the sizes of their bubbles are totally unconstrained and can be arbitrarily tuned while the asymptotics remains fixed. Integrable string sigma models on AdS$_3$ backgrounds with 16 supersymmetries have the distinguishing feature that their superisometry group is a direct product. As a result the deformation theory of these models is particularly rich since the two supergroups in the product can be deformed independently. We construct bi-$\eta$ and bi-$\lambda$ deformations of two classes of $\mathbb{Z}_4$ permutation supercoset sigma models, which describe sectors of the Green-Schwarz and pure-spinor string worldsheet theories on type II AdS$_3$ backgrounds with pure R-R flux. We discuss an important limit of these models when one supergroup is undeformed. The associated deformed supergravity background should preserve 8 supersymmetries and is expected to have better properties than the full bi-deformation. In questa tesi, ci occupiamo dello studio delle varietà anti-de Sitter compatte di dimensione 3 dotate di singolarità coniche con spin generalizzate. Data una superficie chiusa con metrica iperbolica e una mappa di contrazione tra il rivestimento universale della superficie e il semipiano iperbolico, è possibile costruire una varietà anti-de Sitter compatta di dimensione 3 come fibrato vettoriale con base la superficie iperbolica. Seguendo la stessa costruzione del caso non singolare, mostriamo che, a partire da una superficie equipaggiata di metrica iperbolica con singolarità coniche, è possibile costruire varietà compatte anti-de Sitter come fibrati vettoriali sulla superficie con fibre singolari. Queste fibre singolari sono localmente isometriche al cosiddetto Modello per singolarità conica con spin generalizzata. In particolare, dalla costruzione del modello, vengono fuori due invarianti che permettono di studiare tali varietà anti-de Sitter singolari. L’ultimo risultato trattato riguarda il calcolo del volume delle varietà anti-de Sitter con singolarità di questo tipo. In this thesis, we study compact Anti-de Sitter manifolds of dimension 3 with generalized spin-cone singularities. Given a closed surface equipped with a hyperbolic metric and a contraction map between the universal cover of the surface and the hyperbolic plane, it is possible to construct a compact Anti-de Sitter manifold of dimension 3 as fiber bundle over the surface. We show that, when the surface has hyperbolic metric with conical singular points, the same construction of the non singular case leads to compact Anti-de Sitter manifolds as fiber bundle with singular fibers over the surface. These singular fibers over the singular conical points are locally isometric to what we defined Model for generalized spin-cone singularity. In particular, from the model come out two invariants that allows us to study the compact Anti-de Sitter manifolds of dimension 3 with spin-cone singularities. The last result of this work is about the computation of the volume of these compact Anti-de Sitter manifolds with spin-cone singularities.

Relaxing the Bondi gauge, the solution space of three-dimensional gravity in the metric formulation has been shown to contain an additional free function that promotes the boundary metric to a Lorentz or Carroll frame, in asymptotically AdS or flat spacetimes. We pursue this analysis and show that the solution space also admits a finite symplectic structure, obtained taking advantage of the built-in ambiguities. The smoothness of the flat limit of the AdS symplectic structure selects a prescription in which the holographic anomaly appears in the boundary Lorentz symmetry, that rotates the frame. This anomaly turns out to be cohomologically equivalent to the standard holographic Weyl anomaly and survives in the flat limit, thus predicting the existence of quantum anomalies in conformal Carrollian field theories. We also revisit these results in the Chern--Simons formulation, where the prescription for the symplectic structure admitting a smooth flat limit follows from the variational principle, and we compute the charge algebra in the boundary conformal gauge., 34+9 pages

We consider three-point correlation functions for superstrings propagating in AdS$_3\times S^3 \times T^4$. In the RNS formalism, these generically involve correlators with current insertions. When vertex operators with non-trivial spectral flow charges are present, their complicated OPEs with the currents imply that standard methods can not be used to compute such correlators. Here we develop novel techniques for computing all $m$-basis correlators of the supersymmetric model. We then show how, in some cases, these results can be translated to the $x$-basis. We obtain a new family of holographic three-point functions involving spacetime chiral primaries living in spectrally flowed sectors of the worldsheet CFT. These match precisely the predictions from the holographic dual at the symmetric product orbifold point. Finally, we also consider long strings and compute the probability amplitude associated with the process describing the emission/absorption of fundamental string quanta., v2: typos corrected, minor improvements to the presentation. Light probes interacting with heavy bound states such as black holes give rise to interesting observables containing valuable dynamical information. Recently, a family of black hole microstates was shown to admit an exact string worldsheet description. We construct the physical vertex operators of these models, and derive their form in the low-energy AdS$_3$ limit. We then compute an extensive set of novel heavy-light correlators in these backgrounds. A subset of these provide the first match between worldsheet correlators in black hole microstates and the holographically dual conformal field theory, in a highly non-trivial way. We further conjecture a closed formula for heavy-light correlators with an arbitrary number of light insertions. As an application, we compute the analogue of the Hawking radiation rate for these microstates., Comment: 5 pages + references. v2: minor improvements to exposition

We describe a construction of the two-loop amplitude of four graviton supermultiplets in AdS5×S5. We start from an ansatz for a preamplitude from which we generate the full amplitude under the action of a specific Casimir operator. The ansatz captures a recent ansatz of Huang and Yuan and we confirm their result through similar constraints. The form of the result suggests that all ambiguities are captured by the preamplitude which determines the result up to tree-level ambiguities only. We identify a class of four-dimensional ‘zigzag’ integrals which are perfectly adapted to describing the leading logarithmic discontinuity to all orders. We also observe that a bonus crossing symmetry of the preamplitude follows from the transformation properties of the Casimir operator. Combined with the zigzag integrals this allows us to construct a crossing symmetric function with the correct leading logarithmic discontinuities in all channels.From the two-loop result we extract an explicit expression for the two-loop correction to the anomalous dimensions of twist-four operators of generic spin which includes dependence on (alternating) nested harmonic sums up to weight three. We also revisit the prescription of the bulk-point limit of AdS amplitudes and show how it recovers the full flat-space amplitude, not just its discontinuity. With this extended notion of the bulk-point limit we reproduce the scale-dependent logarithmic threshold terms of type IIB string theory in flat-space.

Using the Schwinger-Keldysh-formalism, reformulated in arXiv:2108.01695 as an effective field theory in Euclidean anti-de Sitter, we evaluate the one-loop cosmological four-point function of a conformally coupled interacting scalar field in de Sitter. Recasting the Witten cosmological correlator as flat space Feynman integrals, we evaluate the one-loop cosmological four-point functions in de Sitter space in terms of single-valued multiple polylogarithms. From it we derive anomalous dimensions and OPE coefficients of the dual conformal field theory at space-like, future infinity. In particular, we find an interesting degeneracy in the anomalous dimensions relating operators of neighboring spins., 47 pages. v2: minor corrections. Version published in JHEP

We study graviton scattering on $AdS_4\times S^7$, which is dual to the stress tensor multiplet four-point function in the maximally supersymmetric 3d $U(N)_1\times U(N)_{-1}$ ABJM theory. We compute 1-loop corrections to this holographic correlator coming from Witten diagrams with supergravity $R$ and higher derivative $R^4$ vertices, up to contact term ambiguities, and find that the flat space limit matches the corresponding terms in the 11d M-theory S-matrix. We then use supersymmetric localization to show that all the 1-loop contact terms vanish, as was previously observed for the $AdS_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_2$ theory dual to $U(N)_2\times U(N)_{-2}$ ABJM. Finally, we use the recent localization results of Gaiotto and Abajian, as inspired by twisted M-theory, to compute all the short OPE coefficients in correlators of the stress tensor multiplet and the next lowest half-BPS operator, which we find saturate the bootstrap bounds on these mixed correlators for all $N$., 20 pages, 2 figures, sequel to arXiv:2107.10274, v2 submitted to JHEP

AdS$_7$ supersymmetric solutions in type IIA have been classified, and they are infinitely many. Moreover, every such solution has a non-supersymmetric sister. In this paper, we study the perturbative and non-perturbative stability of these non-supersymmetric solutions, focusing on cases without orientifolds. Perturbatively, we first look at the KK spectrum of spin-2 excitations. This does not exhibit instabilities, but it does show that there is no separation of scales for either the BPS and the non-BPS case, thus proving for supersymmetric AdS$_7$ a well-known recent conjecture. We then use 7d gauged supergravity and a brane polarization computation to access part of the spectrum of KK scalars. The result signals an instability for all non-supersymmetric solutions except those that have a single D8 on each side. We finally look at non-perturbative instabilities, and find that NS5 bubbles make these remaining solutions decay., Comment: 1+42 pages, 3 figures

siehe engl., Solutions to general relativity with negative cosmological constant are ubiquitous incontemporary physics. They have received a surge of attention due to the Anti-deSitter/conformal field theory correspondence — a conjecture which asserts that quantumgravity on asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetimes is equivalent to a quantum fieldtheory with conformal invariance in one dimension lower. In this thesis, we discuss the causal structure and energy of solutions to Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constant in three and four spacetime dimensions. We show that projection diagramscan be used to visualize the causal structure of BTZ black holes and so-called warpedflat spacetimes. The latter correspond to solutions to topologically massive gravitywith positive cosmological constant in (2 + 1) dimensions. It is shown that warped flatspacetimes do not describe black hole solutions. Next, we discuss the energy of solutions to Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constant. To this day, the question of boundedness of energy from below for general relativity with negative cosmological constant remains wide open. For time-symmetric initial data sets, this is the question of whether the energy of asymptotically locally hyperbolic spaces is bounded from below.We show that three-dimensional asymptotically locally hyperbolic spaces with constant negative scalar curvature, arbitrary high genus, and negative total mass exist and explain how this result relates to positive energy theorems in general relativity.

This thesis explores a series of topics in quantum gravity with a focus on the quantum nature of AdS black holes via the AdS/CFT correspondence. In Part I, we examine various holographic approaches to AdS black hole entropy, including (i) from the gravity solution via the Bekenstein Hawking formula, (ii) from the Kerr/CFT correspondence and (iii) from the boundary conformal field theory. We explore these methods with the gravitational implementation of the field theory Cardy-like limit, recently used in the successful microstate countings of AdS black hole entropy in various dimensions. We then consider a deviation from the extremal regime and focus on computing the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of near-extremal asymptotically AdS$_4$ electrically charged rotating black holes using three different methods, yielding a unique and universal expression for the entropy. In Part II, we explore the quantum nature of black holes via the logarithmic corrections to the entropy of AdS black holes in four dimensions. With a focus on AdS$_4$ solutions in minimal $mathcal{N}=2$ gauged supergravity, we show that for extremal black holes the logarithmic correction computed in the near horizon geometry agrees with the result in the full geometry up to zero mode contributions, thus clarifying where the quantum degrees of freedom lie in AdS spacetimes. In contrast to flat space, we observe that the logarithmic correction for supersymmetric black holes can be non-topological in AdS as it is controlled by additional four-derivative terms other than the Euler density. We also study supersymmetric, rotating, asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes and black strings. On the gravity side, we take the near-horizon limit and apply the Kerr/CFT correspondence whose associated charged Cardy formula describes the degeneracy of states at subleading order and determines the logarithmic correction to the entropy, which precisely matches the entropy up to subleading order from the field theory, by the superconformal index and the refined topologically twisted index of $mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, respectively.

We discuss Kaluza-Klein theory for type $II\ b $ supergravity on the warped deformed conifold using a large radial distance limit of Klebanov-Strassler solution where the radial coordinate separates from angle coordinates for a background asymptotic to $ AdS _5 \times T^{1,1}$ spacetime. The decomposition of field fluctuations on harmonics of the base manifold $T^{1,1}$ and plane waves of $M_4= \dh (AdS _5 )$ is examined for the metric tensor components along $M_4= \dh (AdS _5 )$, the axio-dilaton and the 4-form potential components along $T^{1,1}$. Semi-classical methods are used to compute the mass spectra, wave functions and interactions for a set of modes in low dimensional representations of the isometry group. Deformations of the background solution due to compactification effects are also considered. The information on warped modes properties is utilized to explore the thermal evolution of a cosmic component of metastable modes after exit from brane inflation., Comment: 34 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables
