Huanglongbing (HLB), associated with the psyllid-vectored phloem-limited bacterium, Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), is a disease threat to all citrus production worldwide. Currently, there are no sustainable curative or prophylactic treatments available. In this study, we utilized mass spectrometry (MS)-based metabolomics in combination with 3D molecular mapping to visualize complex chemistries within plant tissues to explore how these chemistries change in vivo in HLB-infected trees. We demonstrate how spatial information from molecular maps of branches and single leaves yields insight into the biology not accessible otherwise. In particular, we found evidence that flavonoid biosynthesis is disrupted in HLB-infected trees, and an increase in the polyamine, feruloylputrescine, is highly correlated with an increase in disease severity. Based on mechanistic details revealed by these molecular maps, followed by metabolic modeling, we formulated and tested the hypothesis that CLas infection either directly or indirectly converts the precursor compound, ferulic acid, to feruloylputrescine to suppress the antimicrobial effects of ferulic acid and biosynthetically downstream flavonoids. Using in vitro bioassays, we demonstrated that ferulic acid and bioflavonoids are indeed highly bactericidal to CLas, with the activity on par with a reference antibiotic, oxytetracycline, recently approved for HLB management. We propose these compounds should be evaluated as therapeutics alternatives to the antibiotics for HLB treatment. Phytocompounds possess the potential to treat a broad spectrum of disorders due to their remarkable bioactivity. Naturally occurring compounds possess lower toxicity profiles, which making them attractive targets for drug development. Hydnocarpus wightianus seeds were extracted using ethanol, acetone, and hexane solvents. The extracts were evaluated for phytochemicals screening and other therapeutic characteristics, such as free radicals scavenging, anti α-amylase, anti α-glucosidase, and anti-bacterial activities. The ethanolic extract exhibited noteworthy antibacterial characteristics and demonstrated considerable antioxidant, and anti-diabetic effects. The IC50 value of the ethanolic extract for Dpph, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase were found to be 77.299 ± 3.381 μg/mL, 165.56 2.56 μg/mL, and 136.58 ± 5.82 μg/mL, respectively. The ethanolic extract was effective against Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (26 mm zone of inhibition at 100 μL concentration). Molecular docking investigations revealed the phytoconstituent's inhibitory mechanisms against diabetic, free radicals, and bacterial activity. Docking score for phytocompounds against targeted protein varies from -7.2 to -5.1 kcal/mol. The bioactive compounds present in the ethanolic extract were identified by Gas chromatography/Mass spectrometry analysis, followed by molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulation studies to further explore the phytoconstituent's inhibitory mechanism of α-glucosidase, ∝-amylase, radical scavenging, and bacterial activity. The electronic structure and possible pharmacological actions of the phytocompound were revealed through the use of Density Functional Theory (DFT) analysis. Aporosa cardiosperma is a plant species majorly found in the Indian Western Ghats that belongs to the phyllanthaceae family with ethnobotanical importance. Using a Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectrometer (FT-IR) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) for evaluating leaf extracts of A. cardiosperma, significant functional groups and metabolite constituents were determined, and its total flavonoid, phenol, and tannin content were quantified. Further, its antibacterial efficacy was investigated against microorganisms that cause fish and human disease and are resistant to common antibiotics, including Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Aeromonas hydrophila, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Regarding the outcomes of GC-MS analysis, the primary metabolites in the A. cardiosperma leaf extracts were heneicosane (57.06%), silane (13.60%), 1-heptadecene (10.09%), 3-hexadecene (9.99%), and pentadecane (9.54%). In comparison to other solvents, methanolic extract of A. cardiosperma leaves had increased phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin content; these findings are consistent with in vitro antioxidant potential and obtained that the methanolic extract (100 µg/mL) exhibited the higher percentage of inhibition in DPPH (82.35%), FRAP (86.20%), metal chelating (72.32%), and ABTS (86.06%) antioxidant assays respectively. Similar findings were found regarding the antibacterial efficacy against pathogenic bacteria. Comparatively, to other extracts, methanolic extracts showed more significant antibacterial activity at a lower minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value (250 µg/mL), whilst ethyl acetate and hexane solvent extracts of A. cardiosperma leaves had higher MIC values 500 µg/mL and 1000 µg/mL respectively. The antimicrobial potential was validated by investigating bacterial growth through the extracts acquired MICs and sub-MICs range. Bacterial growth was completely inhibited at the determined MIC range. In conclusion, A. cardiosperma leaf extract's phytochemical fingerprint has been determined, and its potent antibacterial and antioxidant activities were discovered. An omnipresent pathogenic bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ( P. aeruginosa PAO1), is easy to contaminate environmental water or foods, causing daily food spoilage and infections. The biofilm-forming ability and bacterial resistance of P. aeruginosa PAO1 make it difficult to be eradicated by traditional bacteriostatic agents. In this work, we designed and synthesized a pyridinium-based pillar[5]arene (PP5), while trimethylammonium-based pillar[5]arene (TP5) was used as a control compound. After clear characterization, the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities as well as the microbial resistance of TP5 and PP5 against P. aeruginosa PAO1 were extensively examined. It was revealed that PP5 exhibited good inhibition activity with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.051 mmol/L, while no significant antibacterial and biofilm formation activity for TP5 against P. aeruginosa PAO1 was observed. More importantly, PP5 had negligible antimicrobial resistance even after 18th passages. A transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed that PP5 could physically disrupt the cell membranes, causing the leakage of internal constituents, which is possibly ascribed to the synergistic penetrability and π-π interactions of strain, thus greatly reduced the development of bacterial resistance. Overall, the presented studies indicated that pyridinium moieties could facilitate the cationic pillar[5]arene to generate surprising antibacterial and antibiofilm formation ability against P. aeruginosa PAO1.

Antibiotics have constantly been added at an unprecedented rate in order to enhance poultry meat production. Such antibiotics impose a negative impact on human health directly through meat and egg consumption. On the other hand, they also affect humans indirectly by affecting the normal key microbial processes in the agricultural environments, when used as poultry compost. For many years, farmers have been turning poultry litter into compost for agricultural use. Very few studies have addressed the fate of the unmetabolized antibiotic residues in poultry litter that could potentially affect microbial communities when used as poultry compost. We have also questioned the fate of residual antibiotic in poultry waste which may create possible negative environmental pressure on microbial communities that are involved in microbial mediated poultry litter composting processes. The incorporation of antibiotic degrading environmental isolates in poultry litter at the initial stage of composting in order to accelerate the process is addressed in this review as a future perspective.

Kigelia africana also known as sausage plant, yields highly fibrous fruit with a hard shell. Many medicinal uses are reported for the extracts from the fruits, seeds and leaves of sausage trees. In this research, natural cellulose fibers were extracted from the fruit using NaOH and later bleached and characterized for their properties. Results revealed that significant amount of hemicellulose and lignin was lost after the alkali treatment and bleaching leading to a highly cellulosic fiber (up to 71 %). Morphologically, surface of the fibers varied from rough to smooth depending on the extent of treatment. The thermal stability, crystallinity and hydrophobicity increased after the treatment. Sausage fibers also possessed anti-microbial activity against common gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Overall, sausage fibers have properties similar to that of cotton and better than fibers obtained from many unconventional sources. Natural cellulose fibers were extracted from a fast growing perennial grass Eulaliopsis binata (commonly known as Sabai) and characterized for their structure and properties. The untreated sabai grass has been used as reinforcement for polypropylene composites and properties of the composites have been investigated. Although the composition of the sabai grass is typical to other lignocellulosic sources, there is a high content of flavonoids (630 mg/g) and phenols (510 mg/g) which provides high antibacterial, and antifungal properties to the fibers and composites developed. Fiber bundles extracted from the grass had tensile strength of 493 MPa and tensile modulus of 21 GPa, similar to common natural cellulose fibers. Both tensile and flexural properties of polypropylene composites increased with increasing ratio of sabai grass. Polypropylene composites reinforced with sabai grass show high noise insulation and thermal resistance properties suggesting their suitability for automotive and building applications., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of the study was to investigate the antibacterial effect of arginine (Arg) in NaF toothpaste. 24-h mono-/3-species biofilm cultures of S. mutans, S. sanguis and S. gordonii inoculated sHA discs were subjected to treatment with toothpaste supernatants prepared as - [1]:2% Arg -NaF (0.147% F), [2]:4% Arg-NaF (0.144% F), [3]:8% Arg - NaF (0.138% F), [4]:NaF (0.15%) and [5]:deionized water. After 24-h incubation, the mono-species biofilms were subjected to viability assay using WST-8, SEM and confocal imaging (CLSM). The 3-species biofilm were quantified for bacterial composition by PCR analysis, SEM, CLSM, and RNA isolation with reverse-transcription PCR analysis. Increasing arginine concentrations in NaF toothpaste had no effect on microbial viability. The mono-/3-species biofilm imaging depicted that the 2% Arg-NaF and 4% Arg-NaF had a biofilm disrupting effect. The 3-species biofilm bacterial composition indicated that the 2% Arg-NaF group maintained an ecological homeostasis by inhibiting S. mutans growth and enriching the growth of S. sanguis and S. gordonii. The 2% Arg-NaF group significantly downregulated the expression of virulent gtfB gene and upregulated the expression of sagP with relative dominance of arcA. Incorporation of 2% arginine in NaF toothpaste might enrich the alkali-producing bacteria and provide enhanced counter mechanisms against cariogenic pathogen when compared to NaF toothpaste.

A series of new 1,2,4-triazole and 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives was obtained via several steps sequential reactions of phenyl piperazine. Then, these compounds were converted to the corresponding fluoroquinolone hybrids via one pot three component Mannich reaction. All the reactions were examined under conventional and microwave mediated conditions, and optimum conditions were determined. The effect of different solvents and microwave power on microwave prompted reactions was investigated as well. All the newly synthesized compounds were characterized by FTIR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and EI MS spectral techniques. The antimicrobial activity, DNA gyrase and Topoisomerase IV inhibition potentials were performed. The results obtained showed that fluoroquinolone hybrids possess good antimicrobial activity. Moreover, Fluoroquinolone-azole-piperazine hybrids synthesized in the present study displayed excellent DNA gyrase inhibition. To unveil the interaction mode of compounds to receptor, a molecular docking study was performed. These are the days when one would go online first seeking home remedies before seeing a doctor. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is one such popular yet scientifically under-validated remedy. Our results prove the unequivocal antimicrobial activity of ACV to be true at full strength concentrations. However, the activity cannot be generalised because although strong antibacterial activity was observed at 25% concentrations, in terms of antifungal activity, yeasts, especially Candida were found to be less susceptible. The antimicrobial/antioxidant properties are ascertained to the total phenolic contents of ACV, as confirmed by our characterisation of the bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity. When checking for its cytotoxicity, ACV exhibited toxicity even at concentrations as low as 0.7%. These results indicate that there is no question of generalising the idea of ACV usage, instead more in vitro and in vivo validations are necessary in order to precisely weigh the pros and cons of ACV.

Developing a new antibacterial drug by using (Z/E)-4-(4-substituted-benzylidene)-2-isoquinoline-1,3(2H,4H)-diones (5a-h) via DNA gyrase inhibition mechanism is the main aim of this study. DNA gyrase inhibition assay was executed to confirm the DNA gyrase inhibition potentials of 5a-h. DNA gyrase inhibitory potentials were further validated through molecular docking. Docking study was also intended to get more insight into the binding mode of 5a-h into the active site of DNA gyrase A. Agar well diffusion method antimicrobial activity on Gram -ve bacteria Escherichia coli (MTCC 443), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC 424), and Gram +ve bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC 96) and Streptococcus pyogenes (MTCC 442) was evaluated. Excellent DNA gyrase inhibition was exhibited by the compound 5c, IC 50 0.55±0.12 μM; 5d, IC 50 0.65±0.075 μg/mL; 5e, IC 50 0.45±0.035 μM; 5f, IC 50 0.58±0.025 μM; 5h, IC 50 0.25±0.015 μM while Clorobiocin (standard) showed IC 50 0.5±0.05 μM. Apart from all the in vitro studies, a plausible mechanism of DNA gyrase inhibition was also proposed through the in silico validations that are including molecular docking, predicted SAR, functional group availability, pharmacokinetic, and ADMET properties. 1,2,4-Triazole derivatives containing a piperazine nucleus (4a-d and 10) were prepared starting from 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine or ethyl 4-(4-amino-2-fluorophenyl)piperazine-1-carboxylate via several steps. The synthesis of fifteen compounds (7a-l and 13a-c), which can be considered as new analogues of azole class antifungals was performed starting from 1,2,4-triazoles (4a-d and 10) via three steps containing the condensation with 2-bromo-1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethanone, reduction of carbonyl group to alcohol and alkylation of OH group, respectively. All the reactions were examined under conventional, ultrasound and microwave irradiation conditions as green chemistry techniques, and optimum conditions were defined. The newly synthesized compounds were screened for their biological potentials including antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiurease and anti α-glucosidase activities and promising results were obtained. In this study, novel 3-O-methoxy-4-halo, disubstituted-5,7-dimethoxy chromans with bacterial cell wall degrading potentials were synthesized, characterized and evaluated as DNA gyrase inhibitors and antibacterial agents. Compounds were showed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against both Gram +ve bacteria (S. aureus (MTCC 3160), C. diphtheriae (MTCC 116), S. pyogenes (MTCC 442)) and Gram -ve bacteria (E. coli (MTCC 443), P. aeruginosa (MTCC 424), K. pneumoniae (MTCC 530)). Further, a molecular docking study was carried out to get more insight into the binding mode of present study compounds to target proteins (PDB ID: 2XCT (S. aureus DNA gyrase A), PDB ID: 3G75 (S. aureus DNA gyrase B), PDB ID: 3L7L (Teichoic acid polymerase). In the results, 14 > 20 > 24 > 12 > 18 > 17 were found as the most active against almost all executed activities in this study. The predicted Lipinski's filter scores, SAR, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamics, and ADMET properties of these compounds envisioned the druggability prospects and the necessity of further animal model evaluations of 3-O-methoxy-4-halo disubstituted 5,7-dimethoxy chromans to establish them as an effective and future antibiotics., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles are emerging as a biocompatible nanomaterial with multipurpose bioactivities. In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles were effectively synthesized using the aqueous leaf extracts of Parthenium hysterophorus prepared by microwave irradiation. TiO 2 nanoparticles were fabricated by treating the P. hysterophorus leaf extracts with the TiO 4 solution. Biologically active compounds such as alcohols, phenols, alkanes, and fluoroalkanes were involved in bioreduction of TiO 4 into TiO 2 . The formation of green-engineered TiO 2 nanoparticles was confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and further characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. UV-vis spectroscopy analysis showed maximum absorbance at 420 nm due to surface plasmon resonance of synthesized TiO 2 NPs. FTIR spectrum of the engineered TiO 2 NPs showed the presence of bioactive compounds in the leaf extract, which acted as capping and reducing agents. FESEM exhibited an average size of 20-50 nm and a spherical shape of TiO 2 NPs. EDX analysis indicated the presence of TiO 2 NPs by observing the peaks of titanium ions. XRD results pointed out the crystalline nature of engineered TiO 2 NPs. The larvicidal activity of TiO 2 NPs was studied on fourth instar larvae of dengue, Zika virus, and filariasis mosquito vectors Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. Antimicrobial efficacy of TiO 2 NPs was assessed on clinically isolated pathogens Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Besides, we found that TiO 2 NPs are able to quickly degrade the industrially harmful pigments methylene blue, methyl orange, crystal violet, and alizarin red dyes under sunlight illumination. Overall, this novel, simple, and eco-friendly approach can be of interest for the control of vector-borne diseases, as well as to formulate new bactericidal agents and to efficiently degrade dye solutions in the polluted areas.

The present study explores the non-bactericidal anti-virulence efficacy of green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from Gelidiella acerosa against multi-drug resistant Vibrio spp. Spectral characterization of AgNPs was performed through UV-Visible, FT-IR, and energy-dispersive spectroscopic techniques followed by X-ray crystallography and zeta potential analysis. Further, the structural characterization was done by electron and atomic force microscopic techniques. AgNPs profoundly quelled the quorum sensing mediated violacein production in Chromobacterium violaceum and CV026. Characterized AgNPs at 100 μg mL -1 concentrations depicted a phenomenal anti-biofilm efficacy against Vibrio parahaemolyticus (71%) and Vibrio vulnificus (83%) biofilms, which was further confirmed through light, confocal, and scanning electron microscopic analyses. In vitro bioassays revealed the remarkable inhibitory values of AgNPs, by inhibiting the exopolysaccharide production, hydrophobicity, and motility. In vivo studies using Artemia franciscana larvae also confirmed the anti-infective proficiency, as the AgNPs effectively reduced the bacterial colonization and enhanced the survival rate of larvae up to 100% without any toxicity effect. The emergence and spread of pathogens harboring extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) like carbapenem resistant Gram negative bacteria are the major emerging threat to public health. Of particular concern Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenamase- producing strains have been recorded worldwide. Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) caused by K. pneumoniae are significantly associated with morbidity and mortality. Hence the present work was aimed to develop a strategy for addressing these issues through an innovative approach of antibiofilm and immunomodulation. These two independent activities were analyzed in a Streptomyces derived ASK2 bioactive compound. While analysing the effect of sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs), 0.5x of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was found to be more effective in preventing biofilm formation on coverslip and silicone catheter. The minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) was found to be 15-fold higher MIC with eradication of 75% of 3 day old biofilm. Apart from its antibiofilm potential, ASK2 also acts as an opsonin and enhances phagocytic response of macrophages against multidrug resistant K. pneumoniae . In addition, ASK2 resulted in elevated levels of nitric oxide generation by the macrophages and has a stimulating effect on IL-12, IFN-γ, and TNF-α proinflammatory cytokines. The opsonic role of ASK2 and its potential in modulating proinflammatory cytokines secreted by macrophages implies the importance of ASK2 in modulating cellular immune response of macrophages against MDR K. pneumoniae . The present study proposes ASK2 as a promising candidate for treating MDR K. pneumoniae infections with its dual properties of antibiofilm and immunomodulatory activities.

Synthesis and molecular validation of 6-substituted-2-(3-phenoxyphenyl)-4-phenylquinoline derivatives (4a-h) as antibacterial/DNA gyrase inhibitors reported. Primarily, 6-substituted-2-(3-phenoxyphenyl)-4-phenylquinoline derivatives were docked into the active sites of DNA gyrase A&B, to ensure the binding mode of the compounds, and the results were superior on DNA gyrase A over DNA gyrase B. Based on this, S. aureus DNA gyrase A assay was proposed and executed. Most prominent DNA gyrase inhibition showed by 6-fluoro-2-(3-phenoxyphenyl)-4-phenylquinoline (4c), IC 50 0.389μg/mL; 2-(3-phenoxyphenyl)-4-phenylquinolin-6-ol (4e), IC 50 0.328μg/mL; and 5,7-dichloro-2-(3-phenoxyphenyl)-4-phenylquinolin-6-ol (4h), IC 50 0.214μg/mL which were substituted with fluorine (4F), nitrile (4CN), hydroxyl group (4OH) and dichloro-hydroxyl (3,5Cl, 4OH) groups in the quinoline scaffold. Antimicrobial activity on Gram -ve bacteria Escherichia coli (MTCC 443), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC 424), and Gram +ve bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC 96) and Streptococcus pyogenes (MTCC 442) was evaluated. Excellent antibacterial activity showed by S. aureus and S. pyogenes which indicates the activity dominance of 6-substituted-2-(3-phenoxyphenyl)-4-phenylquinoline derivatives on Gram +ve bacteria rather than Gram -ve . Subsequently, the cytotoxicity of 6-substituted-2-(3-phenoxyphenyl)-4-phenylquinoline derivatives was evaluated. Cytotoxicity results of MCF-7 (human breast cancer) and G361 (skin melanoma cancer) cell lines reveals that the 6-substituted-2-(3-phenoxyphenyl)-4-phenylquinoline derivatives are highly toxic to cancer cells. Predicted SAR, Lipinski's filter, Pharmacokinetic, and ADMET properties were also ensured the druggability probabilities of most favorable compounds among 6-substituted-2-(3-phenoxyphenyl)-4-phenylquinoline derivatives., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. To photo-catalytically degrade RhB dye using solar irradiation, CeO 2 doped TiO 2 nanocomposites were synthesized hydrothermally at 700 °C for 9 hrs. All emission spectra showed a prominent band centered at 442 nm that was attributed to oxygen related defects in the CeO 2 -TiO 2 nanocrystals. Two sharp absorption bands at 1418 cm -1 and 3323 cm -1 were attributed to the deformation and stretching vibration, and bending vibration of the OH group of water physisorbed to TiO 2 , respectively. The photocatalytic activities of Ce-TiO 2 nanocrystals were investigated through the degradation of RhB under UV and UV+ visible light over a period of 8 hrs. After 8 hrs, the most intense absorption peak at 579 nm disappeared under the highest photocatalytic activity and 99.89% of RhB degraded under solar irradiation. Visible light-activated TiO 2 could be prepared from metal-ion incorporation, reduction of TiO 2 , non-metal doping or sensitizing of TiO 2 using dyes. Studying the antibacterial activity of Ce-TiO 2 nanocrystals against E. coli revealed significant activity when 10 μg was used, suggesting that it can be used as an antibacterial agent. Its effectiveness is likely related to its strong oxidation activity and superhydrophilicity. This study also discusses the mechanism of heterogeneous photocatalysis in the presence of TiO 2 .

Smoke manifested ever since our ancient's lit fire; today it has evolved to become an environmental concern. However, medicinal smoke is still part of man's natural remedies, religious and cultural practices too. The Asiatic household practice of burning turmeric rhizomes to relieve nose and chest congestion is a well known yet never scientifically authenticated or studied practice. For the first time we investigate the components of these turmeric smudges, validate their antimicrobial and anticancer properties and their cell compatibility. With smoke there is always nanoparticulate carbon and turmeric smoke is no exception. If so, what is the role of the nano carbon (NC) in the turmeric smudge effect? This study isolated, characterized and exposed these secret natural NC undercover agents in turmeric smoke. Their unequivocal role in the ethanopharmocological activity of turmeric smudging has been demonstrated. This work opens a new avenue for use of such nano components of smoke for harnessing the ethanopharmacological property of various medicinal smokes, by excluding the smoke factor, through extracting the nano carbon material in them. This is a possibility to realizing the use of such naturally available nanomaterial, as an eco friendly substitute for the notorious anthropogenic nanomaterials.

The feasibility of utilizing the antimicrobial activity of naturally available teas was studied. Eleven teas including 2 green teas and 9 other traditional Korean mixed teas were tested for their antimicrobial properties. Antibacterial and antifungal properties were assessed. The results showed that green teas possessed significant antifungal and antibacterial properties, while most of the mixed teas showed some amount of antifungal activity and almost insignificant antibacterial properties. Confocal microscopic imaging revealed mycelial damage as well as attack on sporophores rather than spores/spore germination to be the reason behind the antifungal activity. EGCG was identified as the crucial catechin for antimicrobial activity. The study confirmed that green tea had a clear edge over the traditional mixed teas when it comes to antimicrobial activity.

The development of thin film coatings has been a very important development in materials science for the modification of native material surface properties. Thin film coatings are enabled through the use of sophisticated instruments and technologies that demand expertise and huge initial and running costs. Nano-thin films are yet a furtherance of thin films which require more expertise and much more sophistication. In this work for the first time we present a one-pot straightforward carbon thin film coating methodology for glass substrates. There is novelty in every single aspect of the method, with the carbon used in the nanofilm being obtained from turmeric soot, the coating technique consisting of a basic immersion technique, a dip-dry method, in combination with the phytosoot-derived carbon's inherent ability to self-assemble to form a uniform and continuous stable coating. The carbon nanofilm has been characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDAX) analysis, a goniometer and X-ray diffraction (XRD). This study for the first time opens a new school of thought of using such naturally available free nanomaterials as eco-friendly green coatings. The amorphous porous carbon film can be coated on any hydrophilic substrate and is not substrate specific. Its added advantages of being transparent and antibacterial in spite of being green and parsimonious are meant to realize its utility as ideal choices for solar panels, medical implants and other construction applications.

When we drink green tea infusion, we believe we are drinking the extract of the green tea leaves. While practically each tea bag infused in 300 mL water contains about 50 mg of suspended green tea leaf particles. What is the role of these particles in the green tea effect is the objective of this study. These particles (three different size ranges) were isolated via varying speed centrifugation and their respective inputs evaluated. Live oral bacterial samples from human volunteers have been screened against green tea extracts and macro, micro and nano sized green tea particles. The results showed that the presence/absence of the macro and mico sized tea particles in the green tea extract did not contribute much. However, the nano sized particles were characterized to be nature's nano stores of the bioactive catechins. Eradication of these nano tea particles resulted in decrease in the bactericidal property of the green tea extracts. This is a curtain raiser investigation, busting the nano as well as green tea leaf particle contribution in green tea extracts.

A novel lysozyme from cauliflower was purified in a single step, for the first time, using Sephadex G100 column chromatography. The purified lysozyme exhibited a homogenized single band in sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), and its molecular mass was calculated to be 22.0 kDa. The purified lysozyme showed activity between 30 to 60 °C with 40 °C as the optimum temperature for its maximal activity. Although the purified lysozyme was functional at pH ranges between 3.0 and 9.0, the optimum pH for the enzyme activity was 8.0. By Michaelis-Menten equation, the threshold substrate concentration for the optimal enzyme activity was calculated to be 133.0 μg. The purified lysozyme showed extraordinary activity against plant pathogenic bacteria and fungi. At 10-μg concentrations, it inhibited the growth of plant pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas syringae, Xanthomonas campestris, and Erwinia carotovora exhibiting 4.28, 5.90, and 3.88-fold inhibition, respectively. Further, it also completely inhibited the conidial germination of Archemonium obclavatum and, to a very large extent, other fungal species such as Fusarium solani (79.3 %), Leptosphaeria maculans (88.6 %), Botrytis cinera (73.3 %), Curvularia lunata (68 %), Rhizoctonia solani (79.6 %), and Alternaria alternata (83.6 %).

In the present study, we have synthesized silver nanoparticles by a simple and eco-friendly method using unripe fruits of Solanum trilobatum. The aqueous silver ions when exposed to unripe fruits extract were reduced and stabilized over long time resulting in biosynthesis of surface functionalized silver nanoparticles. The bio-reduced silver nanoparticles were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). These biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles were tested for its antibacterial activity against few human pathogenic bacteria including Gram-positive (Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae) bacteria. In addition, we also demonstrated anticancer activity of these nanoparticles in vitro against human breast cancer cell line (MCF 7) using MTT, nuclear morphology assay, Western blot and RT-PCR expression. Dendrophthoe falcata is a hemiparasitic plant commonly used for ailments such as ulcers, asthma, impotence, paralysis, skin diseases, menstrual troubles, pulmonary tuberculosis, and wounds. In this context, the validations of the traditional claim that the leaf extract of D. falcata possesses antibiofilm and anti-quorum sensing activity against different bacterial pathogens were assessed. The bacterial biofilms were quantified by crystal violet staining. Among the 17 bacterial pathogens screened, the methanolic fraction of the leaf extract clearly demonstrated antibiofilm activity for Proteus mirabilis, Vibrio vulnificus, Aeromonas hydrophila, Shigella sonnei, Chromobacterium violaceum ATCC 12472, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio harveyi, Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio cholerae, and Proteus vulgaris. At biofilm inhibitory concentrations, biofilm formation was reduced by up to 70-90 %. Furthermore, the potential quorum-sensing activity of the leaf extract was tested by agar well diffusion using Chromobacterium violaceum (ATCC 12472 & CV O26) reporter strains. The inhibition of violacein production may be due to direct or indirect interference on QS by active constituents or the interactive effect of different phytocompounds present in the extracts. This is the first report on antibiofilm and QS activity of D. falcata leaf extracts, signifying the scope for development of complementary medicine for biofilm-associated infections., (Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New York.)
