Background: The physical health of adolescents is crucial for the prosperity and sustainable development of a nation. Developing specific growth standards is essential for prioritizing the wellbeing of the youth of Pakistan. This study aimed to establish normative standards for height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) among 12- to 16-year-olds in South Punjab, facilitating accurate health assessments and tailored interventions., Method: This study utilized a cross-sectional design and stratified random sampling to select 2,970 adolescents (49.73% boys and 50.26% girls) aged 12-16 years from South Punjab, Pakistan. Anthropometric measurements, including height, weight, and BMI, were collected. The data were stratified by age and sex, and smoothed percentile curves were computed using the LMS method, which incorporates the L (γ-lambda), M (μ-mu), and S (δ-sigma) parameters. The results were compared to international references to provide a comprehensive analysis., Results: The results highlight sex-specific trends in anthropometric indicators among adolescents. Boys exhibited higher mean values in height (160.50 ± 11.50 cm), weight (45.02 ± 9.78 kg), and BMI (17.30 ± 2.41) than girls (158.57 ± 9.34 cm, 41.00 ± 7.89 kg, and 16.29 ± 2.82, respectively). Growth patterns indicate boys grow faster in height and weight between ages 12 and 14, whereas girls show slower annual increases. Comparative analysis with international standards reveals that boys' height and weight were generally lower than international medians (P50th), whereas girls' height was comparable or higher. BMI values for both sexes were lower than international norms, reflecting unique regional growth patterns., Conclusion: This research establishes updated age- and sex-specific normative reference standards for adolescents in South Punjab, Pakistan. The study revealed that Pakistani adolescent boys exhibit higher mean values in height, weight, and BMI than girls, with faster growth rates between ages 12 and 14. Compared to international standards, Pakistani adolescents show lower BMI values, highlighting unique regional growth patterns. These standards have practical applications in screening, monitoring, and health strategy planning, contributing to efforts to promote a healthier future for the population. Objectives: Previous studies have demonstrated the need for regionally specific stature estimation formulae due to the geographical specificity of limb proportionality related to the effects of environmental pressures on growth and development. High-altitude Andean populations have often been neglected in the creation of these formulae. This study uses a hybrid approach to create linear regression formulae for stature estimation and test their accuracy when compared previously published formulae traditionally used in Andean bioarchaeology., Materials and Methods: We studied a sample from a high-altitude Andean population to create linear regression formulae based on anatomical estimates of stature from the femur, tibia, and calcaneus and compare the newly created formulae with those traditionally employed in Andean bioarchaeology. We also examine the reliability of calcanei in stature estimation by creating and testing regression formulae based on metrics from that element., Results: We include specific formulae accurate to within 1 cm of anatomical stature estimates using femoral, tibial, and calcaneal metrics. These formulae provide estimates that are closer to anatomical stature than those traditionally used in the Andes. ANOVA results were statistically significant for differences between Andean-derived and Mesoamerican-derived formulae., Discussion: Although regionally proximate (mid-altitude) formulae provide estimates approximating population-specific formulae, those created from geographically distant populations from sites at or near sea-level are inappropriate in high-altitude studies. Metrics to quantify child growth vary across studies of the developmental origins of health and disease. We conducted a scoping review of child growth studies in which length/height, weight or body mass index (BMI) was measured at ≥ 2 time points. From a 10% random sample of eligible studies published between Jan 2010-Jun 2016, and all eligible studies from Oct 2015-June 2016, we classified growth metrics based on author-assigned labels (e.g., 'weight gain') and a 'content signature', a numeric code that summarized the metric's conceptual and statistical properties. Heterogeneity was assessed by the number of unique content signatures, and label-to-content concordance. In 122 studies, we found 40 unique metrics of childhood growth. The most common approach to quantifying growth in length, weight or BMI was the calculation of each child's change in z-score. Label-to-content discordance was common due to distinct content signatures carrying the same label, and because of instances in which the same content signature was assigned multiple different labels. In conclusion, the numerous distinct growth metrics and the lack of specificity in the application of metric labels challenge the integration of data and inferences from studies investigating the determinants or consequences of variations in childhood growth.

Anthropometry or human body measurements provide important indicators of nutritional status in children and adults (1). In children, measurements reflect general health status, dietary adequacy, and growth and development over time. In adults, body measurements are used to evaluate health and dietary status, disease risk, and body composition. Background: Accurately characterizing children's body mass index (BMI) trajectories and studying their determinants is a statistical challenge. There is a need to identify early public health measures for obesity prevention. We describe a method that allows studies of the determinants of height, weight and BMI growth up to five years of age. We illustrated this method using maternal smoking during pregnancy as one of the early-life factors that is potentially involved in prenatal programming of obesity., Methods: Individual height and weight trajectories were fitted using the Jenss-Bayley model on 28,381 and 30,515 measurements, respectively, from 1,666 children to deduce BMI trajectories. We assessed global associations between smoking and growth trajectories and cross-sectional associations at specific ages., Results: Children exposed in late pregnancy had a 0.24 kg/m2 (95% confidence interval: 0.07, 0.41) higher BMI at 5 years of age compared with non-exposed children. Although the BMIs of children exposed during late pregnancy became significantly higher compared with those of non-exposed children from 2 years onwards, the trajectories began to diverge during the first weeks of life., Conclusion: Our method is relevant for studies on the relationships between individual-level exposures and the dynamics and shapes of BMI growth during childhood, including key features such as instantaneous growth velocities and the age or BMI value at the BMI infancy peak that benefit from the monotonic pattern of height and weight growth.

Objective: The Broselow Pediatric Emergency Tape (Armstrong Medical Industries, Inc., Lincolnshire, IL) (BT) is a well-established length-based tool for estimation of body weight for children during resuscitation. In view of pandemic childhood obesity, the BT may no longer accurately estimate weight. We therefore studied the BT in children from Ontario in a large recent patient cohort., Methods: Actual height and weight were obtained from an urban and a rural setting. Children were prospectively recruited between April 2007 and July 2008 from the emergency department and outpatient clinics at the London Health Science Centre. Rural children from junior kindergarten to grade 4 were also recruited in the spring of 2008 from the Avon Maitland District School Board. Data for preschool children were obtained from three daycare centres and the electronic medical record from the Maitland Valley Medical Centre. The predicted weight from the BT was compared to the actual weight using Spearman rank correlation; agreement and percent error (PE) were also calculated., Results: A total of 6,361 children (46.2% female) were included in the study. The median age was 3.9 years (interquartile range [IQR] 1.56-7.67 years), weight was 17.2 kg (IQR 11.6-25.4 kg), and height was 103.5 cm (IQR 82-124.4 cm). Although the BT weight estimate correlated with the actual weight (r  =  0.95577, p < 0.0001), the BT underestimated the actual weight by 1.62 kg (7.1% ± 16.9% SD, 95% CI -26.0-40.2). The BT had an ≥ 10% PE 43.7% of the time., Conclusions: Although the BT remains an effective method for estimating pediatric weight, it was not accurate and tended to underestimate the weight of Ontario children. Until more accurate measurement tools for emergency departments are developed, physicians should be aware of this discrepancy.

This paper examines changes in the biological well-being in the Kingdom of Poland on the basis of data concerning the physical height of conscripts drafted into the Russian army between the 1860s and 1913. The rise in the average height began with the cohorts born in the mid-1860s and lasted until the mid-1880s. The height increment was 1.9 cm. In the birth cohorts of 1882-1892 the mean height stagnated as a result of the agrarian crisis. In Galicia the increase in height of conscripts began also with the cohorts born in the 1860s and lasted uninterruptedly until 1890. The persistence of the trend in the 1880s was due to the development of animal husbandry after the closure of the border against imported cattle in 1882 and the more balanced pattern of modernization than in the Kingdom of Poland.

Unlabelled: The aim of this study was to derive the mean and +/-1, 2 and 2.5 SD body mass index (BMI) reference ranges as a supplement to the BMI centile reference values published previously for the same group of Japanese children. It is based on 14,012 boys and 13,781 girls of 1.5-18.5 years of age as studied in 1978-1981. The LMS method was utilized for the study., Conclusions: The BMI-SD reference values and charts presented have appropriately reflected the age-dependent skewed distribution of BMI values, and could be a useful tool in growth and nutritional evaluation of Japanese children.

Thorough training, continuous standardization, and close monitoring of the adherence to measurement procedures during data collection are essential for minimizing random error and bias in multicenter studies. Rigorous anthropometry and data collection protocols were used in the WHO Multicentre Growth Reference Study to ensure high data quality. After the initial training and standardization, study teams participated in standardization sessions every two months for a continuous assessment of the precision and accuracy of their measurements. Once a year the teams were restandardized against the WHO lead anthropometrist, who observed their measurement techniques and retrained any deviating observers. Robust and precise equipment was selected and adapted for field use. The anthropometrists worked in pairs, taking measurements independently, and repeating measurements that exceeded preset maximum allowable differences. Ongoing central and local monitoring identified anthropometrists deviating from standard procedures, and immediate corrective action was taken. The procedures described in this paper are a model for research settings.

Silesia is a very variable area as far as industrialization and urban development are concerned. This involves a variation of material--living conditions of its inhabitants; and this, together with the pollution of natural environment, influences the people's health state. Children are the most vulnerable to environmental stimuli. Children's somatic development is a sensitive meter of their health state. The somatic development parameters are subject to modification under the influence of school factors. Elimination of these allows a more accurate evaluation of somatic development influenced by material-living conditions and the outside environment factors. The aim of the study is evaluation of the influence of outer environment on the state of somatic development of seven-year-old children who start education in primary school. In the years 1998-1999 a research was conducted on somatic development of primary school children form a selection of towns/cities differing in the degree of environment pollution. The control group for comparison consisted of children from ecologically clean town of Szczawnica, which is situated at a distance form industrialized, Silesian area. The children subject to analysis were seven years old and had been living from their birth in Brenna, Bytom Bobrek, Miasteczko Slaskie, Pyskowice and Tamowskie Góry. Their somatic development was evaluated on the basis of fundamental parameters: weight and body height and the BMI. The accumulated material was statistically handled with the use of standard deviation scale Z, where the development norms of the Warsaw Mother and Child Institute, from 1983, were the reference point. It was found that there are environmental differences in somatic development, in the researched population, more clearly seen in the group of boys. The lowest weight, body height and BMI are features of girls and boys from holiday-agricultural towns of Brenna and polluted Bytom Bobrek, whereas the highest values were found among the children from Miasteczko Slaskie, who receive much social and health assistance from the zinc-mill plant and the foundation in aid of children "Miasteczko Slaskie", and [the children] from Pyskowice which lies at the outskirts of Silesia. In comparison to development standards of the Mother and Child Institute only the children from Miasteczko Slaskie and Pyskowice slightly exceeded the weight standards. The remaining children were smaller or close to the standard. The children of Miasteczko Slaskie and Pyskowice clearly surpassed in weight, body height and BMI their peers from Szczawnica. The weight and height of seven-year-old children, especially boys, seems to be a good/sensitive indicator of the influence of environmental conditions on children's development.

Purpose: Although bariatric surgery is associated with a decrease in obesity complications, it may affect the children's growth by a maternal nutritional deficiency. This study was conducted to assess the effect of maternal bariatric surgery on offspring anthropometry. Materials and Methods: In a mixed cohort, anthropometric status of children aged 5 years or less born to mothers with a history of bariatric surgery was compared with a control group consists of peers born to mothers with obesity but without bariatric surgery. Anthropometric indices including crude and quantile values for BMI, weight, height, and head circumference at birth and the first 5 years of life were measured. Then, the adjusted effect of maternal surgical history on anthropometric status was estimated by linear regression. Results: From a total of 56 children, 28 born to mothers with a history of bariatric surgery, and 28 born to mothers with obesity but without bariatric surgery. At birth, weight (2915 vs 3225 g) and BMI (11.72 vs 12.94 kg/m2) were lower in the group with maternal bariatric surgery than in the control group (P = 0.02 and P = 0.03, respectively), although after regression adjustment, there was only a significant difference between the two groups in height for age value in children less than 5 years old (B = 0.872, P-value = 0.001). Conclusion: Bariatric surgery with decrease of weight indices at birth has a probable influence on growth and development in next years. Therefore, it is recommended further studies to identify unknown effect of types of preconception surgical procedures on childhood outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This investigation aimed to assess the optimal timing for lip repair in children with cleft lip and palate via 3D anthropometric analysis to evaluate their maxillofacial structures. Methods: The sample comprised 252 digitized dental models, divided into groups according to the following timing of lip repair: G1 (n = 50): 3 months; G2 (n = 50): 5 and 6 months; G3 (n = 26): 8 and 10 months. Models were evaluated at two-time points: T1: before lip repair; T2: at 5 years of age. Linear measurements, area, and Atack index were analyzed. Results: At T1, the intergroup analysis revealed that G1 had statistically significant lower means of I-C′, I-C, C-C′, and the sum of the segment areas compared to G2 (p = 0.0140, p = 0.0082, p = 0.0004, p < 0.0001, respectively). In addition, there was a statistically significant difference when comparing the cleft area between G2 and G3 (p = 0.0346). At T2, the intergroup analysis revealed that G1 presented a statistically significant mean I-C′ compared to G3 (p = 0.0461). In the I-CC' length analysis, G1 and G3 showed higher means when compared to G2 (p = 0.0039). The I-T′ measurement was statistically higher in G1 than in G2 (p = 0.0251). In the intergroup growth rate analysis, G1 and G2 showed statistically significant differences in the I-C′ measurement compared to G3 (p = 0.0003). In the analysis of the Atack index, there was a statistically significant difference between G1 and the other sample sets (p < 0.0001). Bioarchaeology lacks a system for recording the morphology of muscle and ligament attachment sites, called entheses, in growing individuals. Such information is useful in investigating factors that affect bone growth and development, including sex, age, puberty, pathology, and activity. This paper presents a standardized recording method for nonadult entheses based on 29 archaeological individuals of archivally known sex and age-at-death, ranging from two to 17 years. This paper (a) assesses the range of osseous changes of 16 entheses in the upper and lower limbs of growing individuals, and (b) presents a scoring method for each enthesis, which is evaluated through inter-and intra-observer comparisons. Nonadult entheses show a wide range of morphological variation. Method reproducibility is established. Purpose: Physical activity (PA) is likely to be the most important modifiable factor in skeletal muscle development. However, the influence of PA on the skeletal muscle of preschool children has not been thoroughly investigated. The main objective of this study was to quantitatively measure PA, and then, to assess whether associations exist between site-specific muscle changes and PA in relation to sex and weight statuses in preschool children aged 3 to 4 years. Methods: A total of 86 healthy preschool children, aged 3–4 years, were instructed to wear an accelerometer for seven consecutive days. The number of steps taken daily, and minutes spent in moderate–vigorous PA (MVPA) and total PA (TPA) were recorded. Muscle thickness was measured by B-mode ultrasonography using a 5–18 MHz scanning head. Muscle thickness was measured at seven sites: the lateral forearm, upper arm, abdomen, anterior and posterior thigh, and anterior and posterior lower leg. Results: There was no significant difference between boys and girls in terms of MVPA and TPA on weekdays and weekends. According to the linear regression models, after adjusting for daylight duration, the muscle of the posterior thigh was significantly positively associated (p < 0.05) with daily steps and MVPA on weekdays for boys and girls, respectively. Conclusions: We found that the muscle thickness of the posterior thigh in preschool children was significantly positively associated with PA, as measured by daily steps and MVPA. We suggest that for the overall health and well-being of preschool children, the levels of PA should be maintained and/or increased, and preferably transformed into a regular part of daily living. Topics include expanded section on skin disorders showing continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)-related and insulin pump-related skin issues; and screening for thyroid disease by measurement of TSH, anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies.

Survival rates for extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants are improving as neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) rates stay stable, thereby increasing the overall number of infants with NDI. Although there are many determinants of NDI in this population, nutritional factors are of interest because they are readily modifiable in the clinical setting. Nurses can influence nutritional factors such as improving access to human milk feeding, using growth monitoring, establishing feeding policies, implementing oral care with colostrum, facilitating kangaroo care, and providing lactation education for the mother. Maturation progresses at different times and at different rates between individuals. Thus, differences in maturity status exist among players in the same chronological age‐based category, especially in U14 players. The purpose of this prospective study was to describe injury burden according to the relative skeletal maturity status in U14 elite academy football players. From 2011 to 2020, injuries and individual exposure (training and match) were prospectively recorded in 183 male U14 players. Skeletal age (SA) was assessed using the Tanner‐Whitehouse 2 method. Relative skeletal maturity status [SA minus chronological age (CA)] was classified as follows: early (SA–CA > 0.5), on‐time (SA–CA ± 0.5), and late (SA–CA < −0.5). Overall and specific injury burden (days lost/1000 h) and rate ratios for comparisons between groups were calculated. Overall injury burden was 2.8 times higher (3.6 times in training) in early maturers compared with late maturers. Growth‐related injuries were the most burdensome injuries in all three groups, but significant differences were not found between groups. Muscle injuries were 4 times more burdensome in early maturers compared with on‐time and late maturers. Besides, joint/ligament injuries were 7 and 12 times less burdensome in late maturers than in on‐time and late maturers, respectively. Significant differences between groups in overall and specific injury burden were not found in matches. Our results showed different injury patterns in U14 early, on‐time, and late maturers. Hence, monitoring maturity seems crucial to detect potential injuries that cause the greatest disruption, and facilitate design of targeted injury prevention programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Complete growth measurements are an essential part of pediatric care providing a proxy for a child's overall health. This study describes the frequency of well-child visits, documented growth measurements, and clinic and provider factors associated with measurement. Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional study utilizing electronic medical records (EMRs) from primary care clinics between 2015 and 2017 in Manitoba, Canada. This study assessed the presence of recorded height, weight and head circumference among children (0–24 months) who visited one of 212 providers participating in the Manitoba Primary Care Research Network. Descriptive and multivariable logistic regression analyses assessed clinic, provider, and patient factors associated with children having complete growth measurements. Results: Our sample included 4369 children. The most frequent growth measure recorded was weight (79.2% n = 3460) followed by height (70.8% n = 3093) and head circumference (51.4% n = 2246). 67.5% of children (n = 2947) had at least one complete growth measurement recorded (i.e. weight, height and head circumference) and 13.7% (n = 599) had complete growth measurements at all well-child intervals attended. Pediatricians had 2.7 higher odds of documenting complete growth measures within well-child intervals compared to family physicians (95% CI 1.8–3.8). Additionally, urban located clinics (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.2–2.5), Canadian trained providers (OR 2.3, 95% CI 1.4–3.7), small practice size (OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.2–2.2) and salaried providers (OR 3.4, 95% CI 2.2–5.2) had higher odds of documented growth measures. Conclusions: Growth measurements are recorded in EMRs but documentation is variable based on clinic and provider factors. Background Fat-free mass index (FFMI) and fat mass index (FMI) are superior to BMI and fat percentage in evaluating nutritional status. However, existing references fail to account for racial/ethnic differences in body composition among children. Objectives Our goal was to produce age-based normative references for FFMI and FMI in children for specific racial/ethnic groups. Methods Body composition, weight, and height were measured in 1122 normal healthy children aged 2–21 y. Bone mineral content measured by DXA, total body water by deuterium dilution, and total body potassium by whole-body γ counting were combined to calculate fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) using equations based on the Reference Child and Adolescent models. FFMI and FMI were calculated by dividing FFM and FM by height squared, respectively. After outlier removal, the LMS (Lambda-Mu-Sigma) function within R's GAMLSS package was used to produce age-based FFMI and FMI growth curves for black (B), white (W), and Hispanic (H) children for each sex. Combined models were produced in cases where outcomes did not differ by race/ethnicity. Resulting models were compared with previously published FFMI and FMI models. Results FFMI and FMI models based on 1079 children, aged 2–21 y, were created for both sexes. FFMI models for B children showed higher values throughout. W and H children were combined to produce FFMI models for each sex. H boys were modeled individually for FMI, whereas W and B boys were combined. FMI models for girls were created for each race/ethnicity. Models agreed well with those based on children from the United Kingdom of comparable race/ethnicity. Conclusions Race/ethnicity-specific references for FFMI and FMI will increase the accuracy of health and nutrition status assessment in children over race/ethnicity-generic references. Injuries are common in elite adolescent athletics, but few studies have addressed risk factors for injury. Growth and maturation are potential risk factors in this population; however, the current body of literature is both inconclusive and considered at high risk of bias. The aim of this study was therefore to examine whether growth rate, maturity status, and maturity tempo are associated with injury risk in an elite sports academy. Anthropometric, skeletal maturity and injury data collected prospectively over four seasons (117 athlete‐seasons) were included in the analyses. Growth rate for stature was associated with greater risk of bone (incidence rate ratio (IRR): 1.5 per one standard deviation increase above the mean; 95% CI: 1.1‐1.9) and growth plate injuries (IRR: 2.1; 1.5‐3.1). Growth rate for leg length was associated with greater overall injury risk (IRR: 1.3; 1.0‐1.7) as well as the risk of bone (IRR: 1.4; 1.0‐1.9) and growth plate injuries (IRR: 2.1; 1.4‐3.0). Athletes with greater skeletal maturity, expressed as skeletal age (IRR: 0.6 per year; 0.5‐0.9) and percentage of predicted mature height (IRR: 0.8 per percent increase; 0.7‐1.0), were less prone to growth plate injuries. Rate of change in skeletal age was associated with an increased risk of bone injuries (IRR: 1.5; 1.0‐2.3). The results of this study suggest that rapid growth in stature and leg length, skeletal maturity status, and maturity tempo represent risk factors for certain injury types in adolescent athletics. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to analyze secular trends in anthropometrics and physical fitness of Portuguese children. Material and Methods: A group of 1819 students (881 boys and 938 girls) between 10 and 11 years old was assessed in their 5th and 6th scholar grade throughout a 20 years’ time-frame. ANCOVA models were used to analyze variations in anthropometrics (height, weight and body mass index) and physical fitness (sit and reach, curl-up, horizontal jump and sprint time) across four quinquennials (1993 - 1998; 1998 - 2003; 2003 - 2008; 2008 - 2013). Results: Secular trends showed the presence of heavier boys and girls with higher body mass index in the 5th and 6th grade throughout the last 20 years. There was also a presence of taller girls but just until the 3rd quinquennial. Both boys and girls were able to perform better on the core strength test and sprint time but become less flexible over the years. Mean jumping performance remained unchanged for both genders. Discussion: The present study provides novel data on anthropometrics and physical fitness trends over the last two decades in young Portuguese children, consistent with the results reported in other developed countries. Conclusion: Evidence for the start of a positive secular trend in body mass index and in some physical fitness components over the last two decades among the Portuguese youth.

Growth and development is considered the best positive indicator of children's quality of life and well-being. Studies have been carried out in Cuba since the early 20th century and large scale, periodic anthropometric surveys have been regularly conducted by its National Health System to chart modifi cations in growth patterns of children and adolescents. These surveys have produced national references for the anthropometric indicators most commonly applied in individual assessment of the health and nutritional status of children and adolescents in health care settings. These have also provided data for estimating the magnitude and characteristics of secular growth trends, and for comparing growth of Cuban children with that of children in other countries and with WHO's proposed growth standards. The data have also served as evidence of persisting social gradients. The most important results include, as positive data, the positive secular trend in school-aged children's growth of 9.7 cm between 1919 and 2005, with an average increase of 1.1 cm per decade, and, in preschool children, 1.9 and 1.8 cm in boys and girls, respectively, between 1972 and 2015. More recent studies have detected unfavorable changes associated with a marked increase in adiposity and, therefore, in the prevalence of excess weight and obesity. Purpose: To construct weight, height, head circumference and body mass index (BMI) percentile growth curves for Greek children 0–6.7 years old and to compare the BMI means and upper limits with both available Greek national and international data. Methods: Data were obtained from six cross-sectional and one longitudinal study, which included single, term healthy neonates, recruited at birth and followed until 6.7 years. A total of 12,619 measurements were performed on 7034 boys and girls from five counties in Greece in 1988–2005. The per gender-age percentile estimations were based on Box-Cox power transformations to normalize the data. BMI values were compared with available national data and with the CDC 2000 Growth Charts, the Euro-Growth Study, WHO 2006 Growth Standards and IOTF BMI values. Results: The mean birth weight was 3.5 kg in boys and 3.3 kg in girls, and all mean levels of body measurements were lower in girls than boys. The per gender-age mean BMI values were closer to the data of the Euro-Growth Study and significantly different from previous national and available international data. The 85th percentile of BMI was found significantly higher than all the international data. Conclusion: These growth curves could serve as an additional reference for Greece. That the 85th BMI percentile of this study was higher than all available data should be seriously addressed. Therefore, the growth patterns of preschool children from the present study could serve as approximate indicative values and assist in assessing the health level of the Greek child population. Abstract: World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for infants for the first 6 months of life, followed by introduction of nutritious complementary foods alongside breastfeeding. Breast milk remains a significant source of nourishment in the second half of infancy and beyond; however, it is not clear whether more breast milk is always better. The present study was designed to determine the association between amount of breast milk intake at 9–10 months of age and infant growth and development by 12–18 months of age. The study was nested in a randomized controlled trial conducted in Malawi. Regression analysis was used to determine associations between breast milk intake and growth and development. Mean (SD) breast milk intake at 9–10 months of age was 752 (244) g/day. Mean (SD) length‐for‐age z‐score at 12 months and change in length‐for‐age z‐score between 12 and 18 months were −1.69 (1.0) and −0.17 (0.6), respectively. At 18 months, mean (SD) expressive vocabulary score was 32 (24) words and median (interquartile range) skills successfully performed for fine, gross, and overall motor skills were 21 (19–22), 18 (16–19), and 38 (26–40), respectively. Breast milk intake (g/day) was not associated with either growth or development. Proportion of total energy intake from breast milk was negatively associated with fine motor (β = −0.18, p = .015) but not other developmental scores in models adjusted for potential confounders. Among Malawian infants, neither breast milk intake nor percent of total energy intake from breast milk at 9–10 months was positively associated with subsequent growth between 12 and 18 months, or development at 18 months. Human growth and development are depended on both genetic and environmental conditions. From infancy to adulthood, during the growth process the growth rate of the body ratios shows differences. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate height, upper arm, forearm, upper leg, lower leg length values of the pre-school children and to determinate the ratios, and contribute to other public health studies. The study sample consisted of 815 (402 male, 413 female) children aged between 3 and 5 years living in Ankara. Height, upper arm, forearm, upper leg, and lower leg lengths were taken in accordance with the standard protocols after receiving ethical and family permits. The statistical analyses conducted using SPSS 20.0 program and percentiles were constructed using LMS method. According to the results, children aged between 3 to 5 years, the forearm / upper ratio was 0.8 and the lower / upper ratio was 0.7 in both sexes. Positive correlation was found between all variables (p <0.001). The comparison of study results with other country values revealed that upper arm length was lower than the American children (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)) for the respective age groups. Constructing the country specific reference values is of great importance for to follow-up children's development, to evaluate and compare for further generations and to determinate the secular changes. Background and Objectives: To evaluate the effect of culturally-relevant food supplementation and psychosocial stimulation on infant growth and development.Methods and Study Design: A community-based randomized controlled trial was conducted in 40 clusters from 5 selected villages in Tanah Datar District of West Sumatera, Indonesia. We assessed 355 infants aged 6 to 9 months at the beginning of the study. The infants were divided into 4 groups: 1) Food Supplementation (FS); 2) Psychosocial Stimulation (PS); 3) Food Supplementation and Psychosocial Stimulation (FS+PS); and 4) Control Group (CG). The formula food supplement was comprised of a variety of local food sources (local MP-ASI) and adjusted for the local habits. The quality of psychosocial stimulation was assessed with the Infant HOME inventory method. Progress at 6 months was assessed by anthropometry and the Bayley scores of cognition, language and motor function.Results: There were improvements in linear growth, cognitive and motor development of children in the FS (p<0.05) and the FS+PS (p<0.01) groups compared to the CG. After six months of intervention, mean length increased to 6.86±2.08 cm and 6.66±2.41 cm for FS and FS+PS respectively (p<0.05). With the combination of food supplementation and psychosocial stimulation (FS+PS), cognitive development increased to 21.4±12.2 points (effect size 0.56) (p<0.01) and motor development increased to 20.7±18.4 points (effect size 0.50) (p<0.001).Conclusion: Combined intervention with local food supplementation and psychosocial stimulation improved infant growth, cognitive and motor development. Utilizando-se modelos de regressão multinível, foram identificados fatores relacionados à evolução estatural de pessoas residentes em Pernambuco, Brasil, em 2006 e nascidas a partir de 1945. Os dados provêm de dois inquéritos estaduais de base populacional. No modelo final de cada grupo etário, ano de nascimento, sexo, escolaridade, renda e residência em área urbana ficaram positivamente associadas ao crescimento estatural dos adultos, bem como de crianças e adolescentes de 5 a 19 anos. Nos menores de cinco anos, além dessas variáveis, também ficaram positivamente associados o peso ao nascer e a realização de pré-natal, enquanto a ocorrência de diarreia nas últimas duas semanas anteriores à entrevista mostrou associação negativa. Os resultados do estudo mostram que o crescimento estatural foi mais favorecido em ambientes nos quais predominaram melhores condições socioeconômicas e ambientais.This study used multivariate regression models to identify factors associated with the height trend in residents of Pernambuco State, Brazil, in 2006, born from 1945 onward. The data were from two population-based statewide surveys. In the final model for each age bracket, year of birth, gender, schooling, and residence in urban areas were positively associated with stature in adults, as well as in children and adolescents 5 to 19 years of age. In children under five years, in addition to these variables, birth weight and prenatal care were also positively associated, while diarrhea in the two weeks prior to the interview showed a negative association. The findings show that stature was favored by settings with better socioeconomic and environmental conditions.

Utilizando-se modelos de regressão linear com interceptos aleatórios, foi realizada uma descrição da evolução estatural de pessoas residentes em Pernambuco, Brasil, em 2006 e nascidas a partir de 1945. O ganho estatural dos homens adultos foi de 0,23cm/ano, entre 1947-1987; das mulheres, 0,15cm/ano, entre 1945-1987. Em relação aos padrões da Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS 2006), as crianças e os adolescentes apresentaram déficit estatural declinante no período de 1987-2006, com uma taxa anual de -0,019 escores-z (A/I) para o sexo feminino e -0,013, para o sexo masculino; os homens e as mulheres que completaram 19 anos em 1987, apresentaram déficit de estatura de 5,0cm. Projetando-se as tendências observadas em 2006, os homens e as mulheres adultos de Pernambuco esperariam, respectivamente, em torno de 22-33 anos para atingir o padrão internacional. Por sua vez, as crianças menores de cinco anos apresentariam, dentro de 6-7 anos, um déficit estatural de 2,3%, que é a ocorrência verificada no padrão da OMS, corrigindo, assim, o histórico retardo de crescimento dessa população em Pernambuco.Linear regression models with random intercepts were used to describe the evolution in stature among residents in Pernambuco State, Brazil, in 2006, born from 1945 onward. From 1947 to 1987, yearly height gain was 0.23cm in adult men and 0.15cm in women. In relation to World Health Organization standard values (2006), children and adolescents showed a declining annual height deficit of -0.019 z-scores (H/A) for girls and -0.013 for boys (1987-2006). Men and women who completed 19 years of age in 1987 showed a height deficit of 5.0cm. Projecting the trends observed in 2006, adult men and women in Pernambuco would wait 22 and 33 years, respectively, to reach the international standard. Within 6 to 7 years, children under five would show a height deficit of 2.3%, which is the occurrence verified in the WHO standard, thus correcting the historical growth retardation in this population group in Pernambuco.

Introduction/Aim. Anthropometric methods of measuring the whole body and body parts are the most commonly applied methods of analyzing the growth and development of children. Anthropometric measures are interconnected, so that with growth and development the change of one of the parameters causes the change of the other. The aim of the paper was to analyse whether dental development follows the overall growth and development and what the ratio of this interdependence is. Methods. The research involved a sample of 134 participants, aged between 6 and 8 years. Dental age was determined as the average of the sum of existing permanent teeth from the participants aged 6, 7 and 8. With the aim of analyzing physical growth and development, commonly accepted anthropometric indexes were applied: height, weight, circumference of the head, the chest cavity at its widest point, the upper arm, the abdomen, the thigh and thickness of the epidermis. The dimensions were measured according to the methodology of the International Biological Programme. The influence of the pertinent variables' related size on the analyzed variable was determined by the statistical method of multivariable regression. Results. The middle values of all the anthropometric parametres, except for the thickness of the epidermis, were slightly bigger with male participants, and the circumference of the chest cavity was statistically considerably bigger (p < 0.05). The results of anthropometric measurement showed in general a distinct homogeneity not only of the sample group but also within gender, in relation to all the dimensions, excyt for the thickness of the epidermis. The average of the dental age of the participants was 10.36, (10.42 and 10.31 for females and males respectively). Considerable correlation (R = 0.59) with high statistical significance (p < 0.001) was determined between dental age and the set of anthropometric parameters of general growth and development. Conclusion. There is a considerable positive correlation (R = 0.59) between dental age and anthropometric parameters of general growth and development, which confirms that dental development follows the overall growth and development of children, aged between 6 and 8 years.

We studied the association of dental maturity with body mass index ( BMI), energy intake, and macronutrient intake. A randomly selected subset ( n = 148) of the Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project ( STRIP) was invited to an oral follow-up study, and the 6- and 12-yr-examination data ( n = 111, 60 boys) were used. Food records for four consecutive days and BMI values were extracted from the databank of the main STRIP project. The developmental stage of seven permanent mandibular teeth was assessed using panoramic radiographs. The resulting maturity scores were converted to dental age estimates. Three dental-maturity groups (delayed, average, and advanced) and two BMI groups [normal BMI (≤mean+1 SD) and high BMI (>mean+1 SD)] were formed. The dental age was higher than the chronological age by 0.6-0.8 yr. Maturity scores for girls were statistically significantly higher than for boys. The distribution of girls into dental-maturity groups at age 12 yr was different from that of the boys and there were more boys than girls among the high- BMI group. Children of the advanced dental-maturity group had a statistically significantly higher energy intake than children in the other groups. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether an iron-fortified formula with a concentration of lactoferrin would significantly improve the hematologic indexes and iron status in term infants compared with those same values in infants fed an iron-fortified formula without lactoferrin. Method: In this prospective, multicenter, controlled intervention study, 260 infants ages 4 to 6 mo were selected from six maternal and children's health care hospitals in the area. All infants were divided into two groups with the sequence of outpatient: lactoferrin-fortified formula milk group (fortified group, FG, containing lactoferrin 38 mg/100 g milk and iron element 4 mg/100 g milk) and no lactoferrin fortified milk (control group, CG, containing lactoferrin 0 mg/100 g milk and iron element 4 mg/100 g milk) for 3 mo. The levels of weight, height, and head circumference and the concentration of hemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin (SF), and serum transferring receptor (sTfR) were measured and sTfR-SF index (TFR-F index), total body iron content (TBIC) and low height for age (HAZ), low weight for age (WAZ), and low weight for height (WHZ) were computed before and after the intervention, respectively. Results: In all, 213 (115 in FG and 98 in CG) infants completed the intervention trial and all measurements of biochemical indicators. There were no significant differences in the average amount of daily intake of formula milk (94.3 ± 9.8 g versus 88.2 ± 8.7 g for FG and CG; P > 0.05) and iron element (3.8 ± 0.4 mg versus 3.7 ± 0.6 mg for FG and CG; P > 0.05). The average amount of daily intake of lactoferrin for infants in FG group was 35.8 ± 3.7 mg. The levels of weight, WAZ, WHZ, Hb, SF, TFR-F index, and TBIC after intervention of infants in FG were all significantly higher than those of infants in CG weight, 8723 ± 245 g versus 8558 ± 214g; WAZ, 1.02 ± 0.31 versus 0.44 ± 0.18; WHZ, 0.98 ± 0.31 versus 0.41 ± 0.12; Hb, 125.5 ± 15.4 g/L versus 116.9 ± 13.1 g/L; SF, 44.7 ± 17.2 mg/ L versus 31.6 ± 18.4 mg/L; TFR-F index, 1.88 ± 0.41 versus 1.26 ± 0.39; TBIC, 6.12 ± 0.78 mg/kg versus 5.26 ± 0.55 mg/kg for FG and CG; P < 0.05), but significantly lower (P < 0.05) for the prevalence of anemia (4.1% versus 7.5%), iron deficiency (13.9% versus 24.4%), and iron-deficient anemia (1.7% versus 6.1%). Conclusion: When infants who were exclusively breastfed were supplemented with lactoferrin-fortified milk, significant increases in TBIC and iron absorption in the intestine were seen. Introduction: head circumference is an indicator of health and global cranial growth in early childhood, so it must be monitored. Usually, the WHO reference patterns use the Box Cox Power exponential model and the LMS method to model the behavior of head circumference growth. These methods are limited because they compare each individual against the median of a population, which prevents characterizing individual growth, while mixed effect longitudinal models allow assessing individual growth patterns and controlling variability among subjects. The objective of this study was to use mixed-effect longitudinal models to characterize growth patterns based on head circumference in children 0 to 3 years of age. Methods: being a prospective longitudinal study, the criteria for children eligibility considered inclusion and exclusion factors (WHO); 265 Colombian children (116 girls, 149 boys) living in Bogotá were distributed in 3 groups: G1: (0-12], G2: (12-24], G3: (24-36] months. They were measured every 3 months for 1 year. Two examiners were trained and continuously standardized, and they were monitored on adherence to data quality and data collection procedures. Random and systematic errors were calculated. Growth curves were constructed using mixed longitudinal models. The model was estimated through the method of estimation of restricted maximum likelihood (REML), free R statistical software, version 2.15. To adjust the models, we used the lme4 package. Results: 6 models were adjusted, with maximum gradient of growth from 0 to 12 months. The model showed a growth pattern by age group and sex, in groups G1 and G2, confidence bands allowed identifying atypical data, better adjustment, and distribution of residuals, contrary to the behavior in group G3, which showed more atypical data outside the bands. Objective: When the dimensional measurements of the students who spend most of their time at school are taken into consideration, inappropriate dimensions of school equipment may affect their body and psychological improvements negatively. Anthropometric measurements are necessary for designing the educational equipment of the children at school. It is emphasized that anthropometric measurements of the people living in different climate and altitude conditions w ill be different. It is mentioned that anthropometric data available for a certain region will be able to change as a result of changing socio-economical conditions and therefore, anthropometric data update is necessary at certain periods. Materials and Methods: In 2000 anthropometric data obtained from the children between the age of seven and fifteen, who were in sitting and standing positions, were measured with a repeated measurement in the same schools in 2007. Results: Mean values of the heights of elbow at standing position of the female students, 8 years old, increased from 72.38 cm in 2000 to 74.67 cm in 2007 (p<0.001). Most of the other measurements in 2007 were larger than those in 2000, giving the impression that new generation children are getting larger in size. ABSTRACT Stunting, or linear growth retardation, has been documented in up to half of all children in rural indigenous populations of South America. Stunting is well understood as a signal of adverse conditions during growth, and has been associated with developmentally induced modifications to body composition, including body fat and muscularity, that stem from early growth restriction. This article examines the relation between short stature and three anthropometric indicators of body composition during childhood and adolescence among a rural, indigenous population of forager-horticulturalists. Anthropometric data were collected annually from 483 Tsimane' youth, ages 2-10 years, in 13 communities in the Beni region of Bolivia for 6 consecutive years (2002-2007). Baseline height-for-age was used to indicate stunting (HAZ < −2.0) and compared with z-scores of body mass index (BMI), sum of two skinfolds, and arm muscle area. Multilevel regression models indicate baseline stunting is associated with lower BMI z-scores (B = −0.386; P < 0.001), body fatness (ZSkinfold, B = −0.164; P < 0.001), and arm muscularity (AMAZ, B = −0.580; P < 0.001) in youth across a period of 6 years. When split by sex, there was a stronger relation between baseline stunting and lower skinfold body fat scores among girls (B = −0.244; P < 0.001) than boys (B = −0.080; P = 0.087). In contrast, baseline stunting was associated with lower arm muscularity in both girls (B = −0.498; P < 0.001) and boys (B = −0.646; P < 0.001). The relation between linear growth restriction and indicators of body composition persist into adolescence, providing additional insight into the influence of adverse conditions during growth.
