1. The Irony of an 'International Faculty': Reflections on the Diversity and Inclusion Discourse in Predominantly White Institutions in the United States

Abstract

Using the autoethnographic case study method, this article examines how my positionality as a foreign-born faculty member intersects with the institutional rhetoric of diversity and inclusion present in many predominantly White institutions. My vignettes show that foreign-born faculty, although contributing to the representation of diversity numbers, are positioned as knowledge providers in the discussions about the 'global', the 'cultural' and sometimes the 'racial', thus, ironically reinforce the embedded White institutional culture. This article argues that foreign-born faculty members could make use of their cultural positions to unpack the classed and racial culture on campus and to cultivate students' anthropological sensibility. In other words, foreign-born faculty are in a unique position of recognising the limitations of the current diversity and inclusion rhetoric in predominantly White institutions (PWI), but also, they have the potential of decentring the White, middle-class cultural norms. This article concludes with some pedagogical implications.

Abstract

This unit on India is one of four resource units for an eleventh grade area studies course. The objectives for this unit are listed as to generalizations, skills, and attitudes. A double-page format relates objectives to pertinent content, teaching procedures and instructional materials. The materials lead pupils to make comparisons between India and China and also between India and Western Europe in terms of the economic, political, and social systems. The unit is used as a vehicle to develop a number of anthropological concepts related to the cultural problems of introducing technological change into a society. The unit calls for testing a theory of economic growth as well as a theory about which factors lead to revolutionary and which to reform movements. The introduction, concerned with the low living levels, compares the levels of living in India with those in China. Pupils are asked to do an independent study to decide if India has the geographic potential for as rapid economic growth as does China. A teacher's guide for the entire course is SO 006 320. Part of a series which provides overviews of social science research and teaching in UNESCO member nations, the document focuses on Burma, Mongolia, New Zealand, Philippines, and Singapore. One chapter is devoted to each of the five nations. For each country, the following information is presented: history of social science activity, institutional framework, major research interests, curriculum development, future trends, and perceived benefits from regional and international cooperation. The chapters on Burma and Singapore note long-term close contact with the Western academic world and stress the interest of social scientists from the two areas in participating in international and interdisciplinary development research. The chapter on Mongolia identifies Marxism-Leninism and medieval Mongolian social thought as major influences on the theoretical basis for social science teaching and research in the Mongolian People's Republic. New Zealand and Philippines are characterized as concentrating on those types of social scientific research which can be applied to economic production or which provide a scientific perspective on national culture. Abstract

The document focuses on social science teaching and research in Afghanistan, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Nepal. One chapter is devoted to each of the five nations. The first chapter suggests that social science has not played a major role in the socioeconomic development of Afghanistan because most Afghans favor traditional ways of thinking. The chapter on Indonesia traces social science research from the eighth century through establishment of social science faculties by Dutch colonizers and to modern times--characterized by computer research and individualized curriculum for university students. The chapter on Japan stresses rapidly expanding social science research activities to meet the needs of increasing numbers of students and others who demand social science information particularly in areas of sociology, social psychology, anthropology, and interdisciplinary studies. The chapter on Korea identifies law, economics, and political science as the most popular fields of social science and indicates that a major research need is interaction between scholars from developed and developing nations. The final chapter, which discusses Nepal, emphasizes that, although basic social science disciplines are offered at the University of Katmandu and at several specialized institutes, social science is an underdeveloped area with few resources, outdated curriculum, and a lack of creative teachers. Abstract

Part of a series which provides overviews of social science research and teaching in UNESCO member nations, the document focuses on Bangladesh, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Thailand. One chapter is devoted to each of the five nations. Chapter I discusses social science teaching at major universities in Bangladesh and recommends that research concentrate on Bangladesh culture rather than western thought. Chapter II focuses on Iran. Educational problems center on difficulties in coping with the vast influx of students to higher education since 1960; research needs which are particularly strong in areas of cooperative Asian studies of new social classes; and the effects of industrialization. Chapter III, on Malaysia, cites recent origin of the social science disciplines and low demand for science research as major reasons for slow development of the social sciences. The fourth chapter on Pakistan characterizes social science teaching as adequate but notes that research is relatively undeveloped due to political upheaval, lack of professional associations, and a tendency of social science graduates to seek jobs in other fields. The final chapter describes social science in Thailand as being closely linked with government-sponsored legal and administration institutes. Higher educational training is professionally oriented and research in national planning and development is limited. (Author/DB)

11. Minority Student Response to the Anthropology of Asian Black Populations. Revised.

Abstract

Since 1970, the University of Chicago has offered three undergraduate anthropology courses on Philippine Negrito and Malay and Thai aboriginal black populations. Between 1975 and 1981, 72 students, including American blacks, Filipinos, and other Asians, attended the courses. The instructor's observations of students' responses to the courses indicated that minority students responded negatively to presentations of nudity, poverty, and lack of hygiene among the groups being studied, and to the generally racist treatment of Asian black groups in the anthropological literature. To a great extent, rejection of Asian anthropology courses by minority students can be attributed to the quality of anthropology that has been practiced by its contributors in their writings on Southeast Asia. What is needed is a high quality of anthropology that questions the assumptions that all Negrito populations may be lumped together as one group. Instead, each group should be identified by the name the group calls itself, described by phenotype and genotype, and recognized as having a distinct culture. Thorough and methodologically-sound ethnography/ethnology must be developed to replace inaccurate generalizations offered by previous investigations, and to provide non-racist material that can be used to train perceptive and sensitized students. Abstract

A list of descriptive scholarly works relevant to Bangladesh are compiled in an introductory bibliography for nonspecialist users that describes essential aspects of Bangladesh's history, society, and culture. History is emphasized, but the listing also includes documents about social/cultural anthropology, sociology, demography, economics, political science, and geography. The development of Pakistan from 1947 to 1971 is covered as an historical perspective, but literature dealing with the Asian Crisis of 1971 and the emergence of Bangladesh is excluded. Abstract

Main archaeological articles and books from China that have been published from 1949 through 1965 are translated and compiled in bibliographic form. Because there is a lack of materials available to Western scholars of Chinese studies, the authors see these items as necessary resources for the understanding of Chinese civilization and the development of world civilization even though most of them are written in Chinese. The index covers Chinese civilization from prehistoric times to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) It is arranged chronologically by time period and dynasty, with subdivisions by geopolitical area. For each subdivision, the entries are arranged according to the publication date. To facilitate use of the index, a chart showing the chronology of Chinese civilization, a list of the geopolitical subdivisions of China, and a map that shows location of subdivisions and the main rivers and cities are provided. 24. Experiencing development on China's frontier : the Nuosu's bridewealth

Abstract

The thesis investigates the "problematic" inflation in bridewealth among the Nuosu people in contemporary Liangshan, Southwest China, to elucidate how ethnic minorities engaged with various state-steered development projects. The study treats "development" as a historical process, in which the practice of bridewealth has been associated with the ethnicity of the Nuosu, and the inflation in bridewealth has been attributed to the "backwardness" of the Nuosu culture both in political discourses and policy-making of the state. The thesis discusses, through ethnographic materials, how the Nuosu of various statuses indigenise the "humiliation" inflicted on them by state development. The historical perspective and ethnographic method serve to show empowerment of the Nuosu as reflectors of their society. Nuosu on-going and dynamic negotiation and engagement with state definitions of ethnicity and legitimacy has thus led to the reification of the state as an interlocutor at the most local level and in core events of Nuosu's daily life, importantly the practice of bridewealth. The thesis reveals "the variants of development" rooted in the understanding/misunderstanding of planned templates for development. The variants are manifested by the multiplicity of voices and the creativities found in the narrations and implementation of development. By engaging with anthropological debates on the themes of "value" and "the anthropology of the good", the thesis demonstrates how the shift in the value attached to the Nuosu brides transvalues the external environment such as manifested in state investigations, regulations, and legislation. More importantly, the humiliation inflicted on Nuosu culture in the process of promoting development has not resulted in the depreciation of the value that define being a "real" Nuosu. Instead, the practice of bridewealth is informed by Nuosu collective values which simultaneously are creating values. The inflation in bridewealth highlights and transvalues the yearnings and desires of the Nuosu in their most exalted form, leading to a core insight of the thesis that values associated with a "real" Nuosu identity acquired their most forceful impact in the Nuosu encounter with state developmentalism.
