This paper describes a four-port MIMO antenna array design featuring bow-tie-shaped slot-loaded patches with wideband capabilities that cover the frequency range from 24.2 GHz to 30.8 GHz. The proposed antenna design is printed on an FR4 substrate and occupies an area of 25 × 24 mm2. The MIMO antenna consists of four antenna arrays that are symmetrically placed in an upper-lower configuration. The bow-tie-shaped slots loaded radiators are separated horizontally by 3.48 mm and vertically by 5.94 mm. Each antenna array contains two elements that are separated by a distance of wavelength/4. The suggested MIMO antenna array delivers a high gain of 19.09 dB at 27.8 GHz and has a bandwidth of 6.6 GHz that covers the frequency band of 24.2–30.8 GHz. The research demonstrates the quality of the proposed MIMO antenna through various diversity parameters such as mutual coupling, port correlation, diversity gain, and data rate that can be transmitted over a communication medium. The simulation results are validated and found to be consistent with the experimental results. The presented antenna covers the entire bandwidth allocated to different regions, including Europe (24.25–27.5 GHz), Sweden (26.5–27.5 GHz), USA (27.5–28.35 GHz), China (24.25–27.5 GHz), Japan (27.5–28.28 GHz), and Korea (26.5–29.5 GHz). A wearable millimetre-wave radar antenna operating in 24.05–24.25 GHz for imaging applications in collision avoidance to assist visually impaired people is presented. Non-uniform excitation for the series end-fed 1 × 10 array antenna is optimized in simulation achieving a modified Dolph–Chebyshev distribution, which provides improved performance in terms of beam width, Side-lobe level and Gain. Commercial RO3003 and eco-friendly polypropylene (PP) are considered as substrates for comparison purposes, being the PP electromagnetically characterized for the first time at such high frequencies. Consistent agreement between simulation and measurement results is achieved for antenna prototypes on both dielectrics. The impedance matching bandwidth is analysed for the antenna on PP also under bent conditions. The overall size of the compact, low-cost, eco-friendly and flexible antenna on PP is 98.68 × 14.4 × 0.52 mm3 and, according to literature survey, it overcomes the state of the art on wearable radar antennas at 24 GHz. In this work, a novel multiple input multiple output (MIMO) array antenna system with a large bandwidth and high gain has been simulated, analyzed, fabricated, and measured. The proposed antenna is structured in 2 × 4 patch configuration along with a cross shaped ground plane loaded with four square and one circular shaped defect. The projected antenna occupies a total size of 4 3. 6 1 1 × 4 3. 6 1 1 × 0. 4 2 mm 3 . Several slots in an elliptic form have been added to the patches to achieve the required results in terms of wide bandwidth and high gain. The MIMO antenna array is fabricated and experimentally tested to confirm the simulation results. The suggested MIMO array antenna offers an impedance bandwidth of 22 GHz covering 22–44 GHz wide range of frequencies with a high peak gain of 17 dBi at 38 GHz. The designed MIMO antenna offers superior diversity performance and it supports several 5G NR bands n257/n258/n259/n260/n261 in the mm-wave spectrum. Purpose: This paper aims to present the design, fabrication and analysis of a wideband, enhanced gain 1 × 2 patch antenna array with a simple profile structure to meet the desired antenna traits, such as wide bandwidth, high gain and directional patterns expected for the upcoming fifth-generation (5G) wireless applications in the millimeter wave band. To enhance these parameters (bandwidth and gain), a new antenna geometry by using a T-junction power divider is presented. Design/methodology/approach: The theory behind this paper is connected with advancements in the 5G communications related to antennas. The methodology used in this work is to design a high gain array antenna and to identify the best possible power divider to deliver the power in an optimized way. The design methodology adopts several steps like the selection of proper substrate material as per the design specification, size of the antenna as per the frequency of operation and application-specific environment condition. The simulation has been performed on the designed antenna in the electromagnetic simulation tool (high-frequency structure simulator [HFSS]), and optimization has been done with parametric analysis, and then the final array antenna model is proposed. The proposed array contains 2-patch elements excited by one port adapted to 50 Ω through a T-junction power divider. The 1 × 2 array configuration with the suggested geometry helps to improve the overall gain of the antenna, and the implementation of the T-junction power divider provides enhanced bandwidth. The proposed array designed using a 1.6 mm thick flame retardant substrate occupies a compact area of 14 × 12.14 mm2. Findings: The prototype of the array antenna is fabricated and measured to validate the design concept. A good agreement has been reached between the measured and simulated antenna parameters. The measured results confirm its wideband and high gain characteristics, covering 24.77–28.80 GHz for S11= –10 dB with a peak gain of about 15.16 dB at 27.65 GHz. Originality/value: The proposed antenna covers the bandwidth requirements of the 26 GHz n258 band (24.25–27.50 GHz) to be deployed in the UK and Europe. The suggested antenna structure also covers the federal communications commission (FCC)-regulated 28 GHz n261 band (27.5–28.35 GHz) to be deployed in America and Canada. The low profile, compact size, simple structure, wide bandwidth, high gain and desired directional radiation patterns confirm the applicability of the suggested array antenna for the upcoming 5 G wireless systems. The aim of the 5th generation (5G) network was to create a mobile communication network that is fast, reliable, and designed to meet the future needs of society. This study introduces a compact antenna with simple slot shape and high gain, compared to other works, that operates at 28 GHz and is suitable for millimeter-wave applications within the 5G frequency spectrum. New optimized 1x4 slotted array antenna is designed using CST to operate at 28 GHz, using Rogers 5880 substrate, with height of 0.508mm, tangent loss of 0.0009 and dielectric constant of 𝜀𝐫 = 𝟐. 𝟐 and overall dimension of 12x12 mm2, for 5G mobile applications. The 1x4 slotted linear array antenna achieved a high gain of 12.6 dB at 28 GHz with 10 dB bandwidth of 0.82 GHz, and estimated radiation efficiency value of about 83% at the considered frequency of 28 GHz. The fifth-generation (5G) cellular networks will provide gigabit-per-second data rates from massive antenna array combined with the emerging use of large and unexploited millimeter wave (mm-Wave) bands (30–300 GHz) in small cells. Channel estimation for sparse mm-Wave MIMO systems is a difficult task. This is because of a large number of coefficients to be estimated, lower scattering nature, and blockage of mm-Wave by many materials in the environment. This paper will be the opportunity to implement the sparse channel estimation in the 5G cellular networks. In this work, we propose compressed-sensing (CS) based solutions and implements hybrid MIMO architecture for the proposed algorithm, OMP algorithm, and oracle estimator with different mm-Wave MIMO setups. Simulation results show that as compared to the OMP algorithm, proposed algorithm requires 16.9 times less computation time, and significant improvement is seen in normalized mean squared error (NMSE). The high gain, high speed/data rate, high capacity, and beamforming antennas are required for the present generation of mobile and wireless applications to satisfy the exponentially growing demands of the users. This paper presents low mutual coupling multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) array antenna for millimetre-wave (mmw) application. The MIMO-array beamforming antenna with 2:1 VSWR band is proposed for 28.0 GHz and covers 27.04–28.35 GHz frequency band, which is suitable for mm-wave n261 5G-band which cover the frequency range from 27.5–28.35 GHz. It consists of 2 × 12 antenna array elements and the prototype is designed on low loss Rogers Duroid 5880 substrate of size 51.45 × 36.87 mm 2. The beamforming MIMO antenna covers ± 20 0 main lobe directions. The mutual coupling at the MIMO-array ports is less than 28.0 dB. The radiation efficiency and the gain in the presented band are more than 93.0% and more than 13.99 dBi. The ECC in the presented frequency band is ≤ 10 - 4 , which is one of the advantages of the proposed design. As the demand for high data rates is increasing day by day, fifth-generation (5G) becomes the leading-edge technology in wireless communications. The main objectives of the 5G communication system are to enhance the data rates (up to 20 Gbps) and capacity, ultra-low latency (1 ms), high reliability, great flexibility, and enhance device to device communication. The mentioned objectives lead to the hunting of the millimeter-wave frequency range which lies from 30 to 300 GHz for 5G wireless communications. To design such high capacity, low latency, and flexible systems, antenna design is one of the crucial parts. In this paper, a survey is presented on various antenna designs with their fabrication on different types of substrates such as Rogers RT/duroid 5880, Rogers RO4003C, Taconic TLY-5, etc., at different 5G frequency bands. The different configurations of antennas that covered antenna arrays, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas, phased antennas, and beamforming antennas are discussed in detail with their applications. The design of MIMO antennas in the 5G frequency band occupied less space so mutual coupling reduction techniques are required for maintaining the required gain, efficiency, and isolation. In this paper, a wideband and high-gain circular polarised Fabry–Perot Resonator Antenna (FPRA) with a single partially reflective surface (PRS) layer is automatically generated and optimised using a VBA-based interface system between CST Microwave studio and Matlab. The proposed PRS layer is a promising superstrate for wideband and high-gain FP resonator antennas due to its relatively high reflection coefficient magnitude and positive phase gradient, which resemble that of the optimum PRS over the relevant frequency band. The circular polarisation was achieved using a sequential feeding network for a 2 × 2 array air-gapped slot-coupled elliptical patch antenna. The proposed design achieved an impedance bandwidth of 48.58% (15.3 GHz) ranging from 23.84 GHz to 39.14 GHz, and the −3 dB gain bandwidth was 22.42% (6.25 GHz) from 24.75 to 31 GHz, with a peak gain of 17.12 dB at 29 GHz, and an axial ratio bandwidth of 21.75% (6.2 GHz). In addition, the achieved radiation efficiency was 90%. Consistent and almost invariant radiation patterns are achieved over the millimetre-wave frequency band of interest. The experimental and simulated results are in good agreement, justifying the feasibility of the proposed design as a high-gain and wideband FP resonator array antenna for Mm-wave applications. Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) and phased array systems are considered a key technologies to realize the 5G communication systems. Therefore, the purpose of this research is the suggestion of a novel mm-wave Ultrawide Band (UWB) antenna design with compact and straightforward layout suitable for both MIMO and phased array systems. Hence, the designed antenna array has been studied separately as a MIMO antenna and as a phased array antenna to carefully assess the performance of each system. The single antenna design is an elliptical patch antenna where the design novelty lies in the combination of a modified inset-feed and defected ground structure to provide a large bandwidth without any compromise in the radiation performance, nor in antenna size and design simplicity. The Design process are performed using CST MWS software, where the Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 substrate is chosen to construct the antenna. A broadband characteristic of 8.7 GHz from 26 to 34.7 GHz with two resonant frequencies at 28 GHz and 33 GHz is obtained. A good radiation properties are achieved, where the gain is greater than 4.5 dB while the radiation efficiency exceeds 97% over the operating band. The MIMO and phased array antennas are made up of 12-elements of the single UWB-antenna arranged linearly along the width-edge of the smartphone mainboard. The MIMO antenna proves a high diversity performance in terms of Diversity Gain (DG), Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC), Total Active Reflection Coefficient (TARC), Channel Capacity Loss (CCL) and Mean Effective Gain (MEG), owing to the low mutual coupling less than − 20 dB, which is obtained using a separating slits between the elements. In addition, the suggested phased array provides a highly stable gain up to 15 dB over the entire bandwidth at broadside direction, besides the wide scanning range of ± 60° at 28 GHz and ± 40° at 33 GHz. Hence, the attained results assure that the suggested antenna could be appropriate for incorporation in 5G smartphones and other wireless devices and can be effectively used for both phased array and MIMO applications. This article presents a 150-GHz regenerative low-power miniature two-way radio integrated with on-chip antennas. The low-power radio is based on a reconfigurable fundamental oscillator array that can be used as a sub-terahertz (THz) source in the transmitter (Tx) mode and a sub-THz super-regenerative detector in the receiver (Rx) mode supporting ON–OFF keying (OOK) modulation. The oscillators are coupled through a low-loss integrated Marchand balun-based coupling network that guarantees far-field constructive interference at the Rx side. A 2 $\times $ 2 on-chip patch antenna array is designed with a new adaptive metal-fill placement methodology that largely reduces antenna losses and off-tuning present in sub-THz/THz frequency antenna designs without the need for bulky silicon lenses. Our proof-of-concept prototype achieves a maximum EIRP of 8.52 dBm at a frequency of 149 GHz, an Rx sensitivity of −70 dBm, and a dc-to-EIRP efficiency of 30.7% with no silicon lens, which is the highest efficiency reported of all the silicon-based sub-THz transceivers (TRxs) in the 150-GHz range. The moderate 2 $\times $ 2 array size with no silicon lens offers a large field of view (FoV) of ±40°, which eases node finding and link establishment in deployment. Our miniature low-power radio prototype consumes 11.6 mW in the Tx mode and 10 mW in the Rx mode after duty cycling. Wireless peer-to-peer network measurements with OOK modulation using a 10-Mb/s data rate demonstrate a chip-to-chip communication distance of 70 cm and BER $\le $ 10 $^{-5}$ at/above −55-dBm received power and a BER of 6 $\times $ 10 $^{-3}$ at −70-dBm received power. The prototype chip was designed using the GlobalFoundries 45-nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process, and it occupies a total chip area of 2.1 mm $\times $ 2.1 mm, including the antenna array, making it particularly apt for ultra-miniaturized, high-security, and stealth Internet-of-Things (IoT) nodes for intelligent edge networks and wearable devices. This paper presents a planar multi-circular loop antenna with a wide impedance bandwidth for next generation mm-wave systems. The proposed antenna comprises three circular rings with a partial ground plane with a square slot. The resonating structure is designed on a 0.254 mm thin RO5880 substrate with a relative permittivity of 2.3. The single element of the proposed design showed a resonance response from 26.5 to 41 GHz, with a peak gain of 4 dBi and radiation efficiency of 96%. The proposed multicircular ring antenna element is transformed into a four-element array system. The array size is kept at 18.25 × 12.5 × 0.254 mm3 with a peak gain of 11 dBi. Phased arrays, commonly used in IEEE 802.11ad and 5G radios, are capable of focusing radio frequency signals in a specific direction or a spatial region. Beamforming achieves such directional or spatial concentration of signals and enables phased array-based radios to achieve high data rates. Designing beams for millimeter wave and terahertz communication using massive phased arrays, however, is challenging due to hardware constraints and the wide bandwidth in these systems. For example, beams which are optimal at the center frequency may perform poor in wideband communication systems where the radio frequencies differ substantially from the center frequency. The poor performance in such systems is due to differences in the optimal beamformers corresponding to distinct radio frequencies within the wide bandwidth. Such a mismatch leads to a misfocus effect in near-field systems and the beam squint effect in far-field systems. In this paper, we investigate the misfocus effect and propose InFocus, a low complexity technique to construct beams that are well suited for massive wideband phased arrays. The beams are constructed using a carefully designed frequency modulated waveform in the spatial dimension. In this article, we propose a microstrip-fed printed meandered log-periodic monopole array (PMLPMA), and its dual-port configuration incorporating an octagonal ring frequency selective surface (FSS) layer. The dual-port PMLPMA antenna system has a compact structure with a total dimension of 18.75 × 18.75 mm2 and is designed to operate in the 5G n257 (28 GHz) band. The proposed PMLPMA radiator consists of five log-periodic monopole array elements, and the dual-port antenna system comprises two identical PMLPMAs placed vertically next to each other. Additionally, an octagonal ring-shaped single-layer FSS was implemented on the proposed antenna system to increase the gain across the operational band. Simulation results demonstrate that the dual-port PMLPMA antenna achieves a peak gain of about 3.5 dBi without the FSS layer, while a peak gain of 7.35 dBi is achieved when the FSS layer is augmented on the antenna. Moreover, isolation levels exceeding 30 dB are obtained for both cases between the 26.5–29.5 GHz frequency ranges. To verify the simulation results, the dual-port PMLPMA antenna system, and the octagonal ring-shaped FSS layer are also prototyped. The measurements align closely with the simulations in terms of performance criteria such as gain, bandwidth, and radiation patterns. In this communication, a dual-band shared aperture antenna is presented. The proposed antenna achieves dual-band operation by housing both a low-frequency patch antenna array and a high-frequency reflectarray in the same aperture area. The two different antenna types are combined into a single-antenna product without any significant performance loss. The antenna has a layered structure that allows the low-frequency antenna array to have both a sufficient impedance bandwidth and realized gain. The antenna has a shared aperture since the high-frequency reflectarray has unit elements within the area of the low-frequency patch antenna array. This allows the antenna to achieve a good realized gain in the high-frequency band. The proposed antenna is fabricated and measured. The prototype is designed for S- and Ka-bands resulting in a frequency ratio of 7.37. The shared aperture size is 156 mm $\times156$ mm $\times4.624$ mm ($1.82\lambda \times 1.82\lambda \times 0.05\lambda $ at S-band and $13.4\lambda \times 13.4\lambda \times 0.40\lambda $ at Ka-band). Measurements show the impedance bandwidth to be 200 MHz (6%) and 5.1 GHz (20%) and the peak realized gain to be 13.70 and 27.65 dBi at 3.5 and 25.8 GHz, respectively. We present a photonically-excited antenna array at E-band for scanning by beam switching in wireless links. First, we discuss the proposed technique applied to photonic-enabled (sub)millimeter-wave transmitters. Next, we present our implementation; it consists of two sub-arrays of stacked patches as primary feeds of a Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) lens, with one photodiode feeding each sub-array. To validate the assembly, the return loss and radiation patterns have been measured for one of the sub-arrays excited with a coplanar probe. In turn, the lens illuminated by one of the sub-arrays yields a directivity of 27 dBi. The radiation patterns measured for the transmitter module (including the lens) are in very good agreement with full-wave simulations, and they show that excitation of one of either sub-arrays allows beam switching between $\pm 2.7^\circ$ with a beam crossover at $-3\, \mathrm{dB}$. Finally, we have tested the transmitter in a 0.6 m wireless link. Depending on the position of the detector and on which sub-array is excited, we have accomplished 5 Gbps transmission for on-off-keying modulation and direct detection (BER $=10^{-11}$). In this paper, a novel miniaturized planar antipodal Vivaldi antenna (AVA) with high gain and back radiation reduction for 5G millimeter‐wave (mm‐Wave) communication is presented. First, due to the use of the gradual corrugated edges (GCE), the operating band of the antenna is extended in the direction of lower frequencies and the overall gain is also improved as well. Second, its gain of the antenna is better enhanced at the high frequency band through I‐Shape Metal Director (IMD). Lastly, to further reduce the back radiation, the split ring resonance branches (SRB) are added to the ground. The antenna front‐back ratio has improved considerably to over 20 dB. Meanwhile the antenna gain is improved further. Furthermore, a prototype antenna array was fabricated and the measurement results clearly show that the antenna array gain varies in the range of 15.86–16.43 dB when operating in the 5G millimeter wave band (24.75–28.35 GHz). Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is one viable solution to support Gbps sensor data sharing in vehicular networks. The use of large antenna arrays at mmWave and high mobility in vehicular communication make it challenging to design fast beam alignment solutions. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that learns the channel angle-of-departure (AoD) statistics at a base station (BS) and uses this information to efficiently acquire channel measurements. Our framework integrates online learning for compressive sensing (CS) codebook learning and the optimized codebook is used for CS-based beam alignment. We formulate a CS matrix optimization problem based on the AoD statistics available at the BS. Furthermore, based on the CS channel measurements, we develop techniques to update and learn such channel AoD statistics at the BS. We use the upper confidence bound (UCB) algorithm to learn the AoD statistics and the CS matrix. Numerical results show that the CS matrix in the proposed framework provides faster beam alignment than standard CS matrix designs. Simulation results indicate that the proposed beam training technique can reduce overhead by 80% compared to exhaustive beam search, and 70% compared to standard CS solutions that do not exploit any AoD statistics. Recently, mm-wave multi-in multi-out (MIMO) arrays are garnering significant attention because of their ability to form multiple spatial beams, achieving significantly higher data rates compared to traditional phased array-based approaches. Furthermore, scalable MIMO arrays can provide many other functionalities, such as full digital beamforming and per-power amplifier (PA) digital pre-distortion. In this work, an MIMO four-element TX array architecture is presented with a frequency-domain multiplexing-based single-wire interface (SWI), breaking the tradeoff between channel-to-channel isolation and single wire (SW) bandwidth (BW). The concept of harmonic-rejection mixing (HRM) is used to de-multiplex the four modulated signals simultaneously from the SW using a single passive mixer driven by a multi-phase local oscillator (LO). The two-stage harmonic recombination circuits are implemented in baseband and, hence, achieve high channel-to-channel isolation with a low power overhead. A 60-GHz four-element TX prototype demonstrates the proposed architecture in 45-nm RF silicon-on-insulator (RFSOI) CMOS. The frequency-division-multiplexed (FDM)-based SWI can support 8-GHz total intermediate frequency (IF) BW across the four channels with 30–40-dB channel-to-channel isolation. A new compact 1 × 4 microstrip patch antenna array design for future 5G applications is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna array consists of square slot loaded with four radiating patch elements. The corporate feed network has been implemented for the excitation of the array. The feed line is connected to the square slot patch through a quarter-wave transformer matching network. The proposed array is designed on an FR-4 substrate with a dielectric constant of 4.4, thickness of 1.6 mm and loss tangent (tan δ) of 0.02. It has a compact dimension of 9.590 × 17.802 × 1. 6 m m 3 . The proposed structure has been designed and simulated by using commercially available HFSS software. The simulated results (reflection coefficient, gain, efficiency, radiation pattern) are verified through the measurement process to confirm the validity of the design concept. The measurement results are in good agreement with the simulated results. The proposed structure resonates at 38.1 GHz with a − 10 dB impedance bandwidth of about 3700 MHz (36.5 GHz to 40.2 GHz). The reflection coefficient at 38.1 GHz is − 34 dB, with a maximum gain of 7.81 dB. Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication in typical wearable and data center settings is short range. As the distance between the transmitter and the receiver in short range scenarios can be comparable to the length of the antenna arrays, the common far field approximation for the channel may not be applicable. As a result, dictionaries that result in a sparse channel representation in the far field setting may not be appropriate for short distances. In this paper, we develop a novel framework to exploit the structure in short range mmWave channels. The proposed method splits the channel into several subchannels for which the far field approximation can be applied. Then, the structure within and across different subchannels is leveraged using message passing. We show how information about the antenna array geometry can be used to design message passing factors that incorporate structure across successive subchannels. Simulation results indicate that our framework can be used to achieve better beam alignment with fewer channel measurements when compared to standard compressed sensing-based techniques that do not exploit structure across subchannels. A wideband high‐gain mm‐Wave antenna array operating in Ka‐band is reported. The antenna element consists of an antipodal Vivaldi antenna (AVA) with plated through vias on the edges of the radiating arms, which is utilized to eliminate the harmful gap resonance due to the electrically discontinuity. A modified wideband 8‐way substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) power divider is proposed to feed the linear array. In addition, in order to enhance antenna gain, a stacked dielectric superstrate is employed, which achieves 2.3 dBi average gain improvement over 25‐40 GHz. The proposed structure provides superior bandwidth of 25.4‐40 GHz with S11 < −9.5 dB (corresponding to VSWR < 2). The modified SIW power divider, 1 × 8 AVA array and the dielectric superstrate are designed and fabricated, resulting in a wideband and high‐gain structure as compared to other SIW‐fed antennas. A prototype is experimentally verified. The measured results show that the impedance bandwidth ranges from 25.37 to 39.48 GHz (S11 < −9.6 dB, relative bandwidth of 43%). We aim to design an analog-only beamforming scheme for downlink multi-user mm-wave systems to optimize the beamforming gain and the inter-user interference at the same time. Traditional analog beamforming schemes, such as the beam selection method, use the array response vector corresponding to the strongest path of the channel to generate a beam pointing to the user. In multi-user systems, such schemes will lead to large inter-user interference, especially when the users are closely located. In this paper, we formulate a multi-objective problem to strike a balance between the beamforming gain and the inter-user interference. To solve the problem, we first use the weighted-sum method to transform the multi-objective problem into a single-objective problem. Then, we use the semi-definite programing technique to make the analog beamforming with constant-magnitude constraints tractable. Furthermore, to alleviate the effects of the channel estimation and feedback quantization errors, we design a robust beamforming scheme to provide robustness against imperfect channel information. We first develop a channel error model for the scattering clustered channel model, which can serve as a general channel error model for the mm-wave channels. Then, we formulate a multi-objective problem using the stochastic approach to suppress the interference and enhance the beamforming gain at the same time. The simulation results show that our proposed non-robust multi-user analog beamformer outperforms the traditional analog beamforming method when the SNR is high and our proposed robust beamformer can provide up to 109% improvement in the sum-rate compared with the beam selection method. The mm-wave spectra at 71–76 GHz (70 GHz) and 81–86 GHz (80 GHz) have the potential to endow fifth-generation new radio (5G-NR) with mobile connectivity at gigabit rates. However, a pressing issue is the presence of incumbent systems in these bands, which are primarily point-to-point fixed stations (FSs). In this paper, we first identify the key properties of incumbents by parsing databases of existing stations in major cities to devise several modeling guidelines and characterize their deployment geometry and antenna specifications. Second, we develop a detailed uplink interference framework to compute the aggregate interference from outdoor 5G-NR users into FSs. We then present several case studies in densely populated areas, using actual incumbent databases and building layouts. Our simulation results demonstrate promising 5G coexistence at 70 and 80 GHz as the majority of FSs experience interference well below the noise floor, thanks to the propagation losses in these bands and the deployment geometry of the incumbent and 5G systems. For the few FSs that may incur higher interference, we propose several passive interference mitigation techniques such as angular-based exclusion zones and spatial power control. Emerging wireless communication systems will be characterized by a tight coupling between communication and positioning. This is particularly apparent in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) communications, where devices use a large number of antennas, and the propagation is well described by geometric channel models. For mm-wave communications, initial access, consisting in the beam selection and alignment of two devices, is challenging and time consuming in the absence of location information. Conversely, accurate positioning relies on high-quality communication links with proper beam alignment. This paper studies this interaction and proposes a new position-aided transmitter beam selection protocol, which considers the problem of joint communication and positioning in scenarios with direct line-of-sight and scattering. Constrained by the number of transmitted data streams, this paper proposes sub-carrier allocation (SA) and hybrid precoding (HP) designs for sum-rate maximization in mm-wave OFDMA systems. The optimization is first formulated as a computation sparsity-constrained HP design problem, which is non-convex and challenging to solve. Two two-stage solution approaches are proposed. In the first approach, a fully digital precoder (FDP) is optimized considering the computation sparsity constraint in the first stage. In the second approach, the sparsity constraint is only imposed in the second stage. To find the FDP, we employ the minimization of the weighted mean-squared error and the $\ell 1$ -reweighted methods to tackle the non-convex objective function and sparsity constraints, respectively. In the second stage of each approach, we exploit an alternating weighted mean-squared error minimization algorithm to reconstruct HP’s based on the FDP found in the first stage. Two novel analog precoding designs, namely semi-definite-relaxation-based and projected-gradient-descent-based, are then proposed to optimize the analog part of the obtained HP’s. We also study the impacts of various system parameters on the system sum-rate and provide resource provisioning insights for HP systems. This paper studies a variant of hybrid beamforming, namely, hybrid beamforming with selection (HBwS), as an attractive solution to reduce the hardware cost of multiuser Massive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output systems, while retaining good performance. Unlike conventional hybrid beamforming, in a transceiver with HBwS, the antenna array is fed by an analog beamforming matrix with $\bar{L}$ input ports, where $\bar{L}$ is larger than the number of up/down-conversion chains $\bar{K}$. A bank of switches connects the instantaneously best $\bar{K}$ out of the $\bar{L}$ input ports to the up/down-conversion chains. The analog beamformer is designed based on average channel statistics and therefore needs to be updated only infrequently, while the switches operate based on instantaneous channel knowledge. HBwS allows use of simpler hardware in the beamformer that only need to adjust to the statistics, while also enabling the effective analog beams to adapt to the instantaneous channel variations via switching. This provides better user separability, beamforming gain, and/or simpler hardware than some conventional hybrid schemes. In this paper, a novel design for the analog beamformer is derived and approaches to reduce the hardware and computational cost of a multiuser HBwS system are explored. Due to abundant frequency resources, millimeter wave (mm-wave) spectrum has drawn much attention as a solution to bandwidth scarcity. However, many characteristics of mm-wave transmissions, such as blockage and reduced coverage, make conventional network architectures very inefficient for use in mm-wave networks. A recently proposed multi-tier mm-wave network architecture allows for relaying around blockages and enlarges the coverage of each base station at an acceptable deployment cost. Nevertheless, this architecture introduces major challenges to the scheduling of each tier. The necessity of both enabling flexible user association and fully exploiting the wireless backhaul requires a cross-tier consideration of the multi-tier mm-wave network. We comprehensively analyze the scheduling problem of a downlink multi-tier mm-wave network by jointly regulating the transmissions in all tiers. The cross-tier optimization problem is NP-hard, but a sub-optimal scheme which iteratively optimizes the schedule in different tiers of the network is proposed with polynomial computational complexity. This paper describes a 28-GHz CMOS direct conversion transceiver with packaged $2 \times 4$ patch antenna array for 5G communication. Beamforming antenna and reconfigurable transceiver architecture are used for high effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP). For low error vector magnitude (EVM), switchless matching transmitter (Tx)/receiver (Rx) to antenna and 28-GHz injection-locked local oscillator (LO) generator are employed. Test chip was fabricated in 28-nm RF CMOS process. Measurement results show Tx EIRPsat of 31.5 dBm ( $P_{\mathrm {sat}}$ of 10.5 dBm in one power amplifier (PA)), EIRPmax 24 dBm ( $P_{\mathrm {max}}$ of 2 dBm with backoff of 7.5 dB in one PA), Rx noise figure of 6.7 dB, and integrated LO phase noise of −38.7 dBc (0.67°). After IQ mismatch calibration, Tx LO leakage and image power are less than −35 dBc. Hybrid beamforming is a promising low-cost solution for large multiple-input multiple-output systems, where the base station is equipped with fewer radio frequency chains. In these systems, the selection of codewords for analog beamforming is essential to optimize the uplink sum rate. In this paper, based on machine learning, we propose a data-driven method of analog beam selection to achieve a near-optimal sum rate with low complexity, which is highly dependent on training data. Specifically, we take the beam selection problem as a multiclass-classification problem, where the training dataset consists of a large number of samples of the millimeter-wave channel. Using this training data, we exploit the support vector machine algorithm to obtain a statistical classification model, which maximizes the sum rate. For real-time transmissions, with the derived classification model, we can select, with low complexity, the optimal analog beam of each user. We also propose a novel method to determine the optimal parameter of Gaussian kernel function via McLaughlin expansion. Analysis and simulation results reveal that, as long as the training data are sufficient, the proposed data-driven method achieves a near-optimal sum-rate performance, while the complexity reduces by several orders of magnitude, compared to the conventional method. This paper presents an overview of the research work currently being performed within the frame of project DAAB and its successor DAAB-TX towards the integration of ultra-wideband transceivers operating at mm-wave frequencies and capable of data rates up to 100 Gbits-1. Two basic systemarchitectures are being considered: integrating a broadband antenna with a distributed amplifier and integrate antennas centered at adjacent frequencies with broadband active combiners or dividers. The paper discusses in detail the design of such systems and their components, fromthe distributed amplifiers and combiners, to the broadband silicon antennas and their single-chip integration. All components are designed for fabrication in a commercially available SiGe:C BiCMOS technology. The presented results represent the state of the art in their respective areas: 170 GHz is the highest reported bandwidth for distributed amplifiers integrated in Silicon; 89 GHz is the widest reported bandwidth for integrated-system antennas; the simulated performance of the two antenna integrated receiver spans 105 GHz centered at 148GHz, which would improve the state of the art by a factor in excess of 4 even against III-V implementations, if confirmed by measurements. In this paper, we consider the design of analog beamformers for the downlink of multi-user massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We specifically investigate systems, where both link ends are equipped with hybrid digital/analog beamforming structures, where the analog beamformers are adapted based on second order channel statistics, reducing the training overhead as well as hardware effort. We present a framework for the optimization of such beamformers operating in mm-wave channels, exploiting the directional characteristics and sparse nature of such channels. We develop an approximate upper bound of the ergodic sum capacity, based on which efficient beamforming algorithms are devised. With requirements of spiraling data rates and limited spectrum availability, there is an increased interest in mm-wave beamformer-based communications for 5G. For upcoming cellular networks, the critical point is to exploit the increased number of employable antennas at both Tx and Rx to: 1) combat increased path loss; 2) tackle higher interference due to higher user density; and 3) handle multipath effects in frequency selective channels. Toward this, a multi-beam spatiotemporal superresolution beamforming framework is proposed in this paper as a promising candidate to design beampatterns that mitigate/suppress co-channel interference and deliver massive gain in the desired directions. Initially, channel and signal models suitable for the mm-wave MIMO system are presented using the manifold vectors of both Tx and Rx antenna arrays. Based on these models, a novel subspace-based channel estimator is employed, which estimates delays, directions, velocities, and fading coefficients of the desired signal paths. This information is then exploited by the proposed spatiotemporal beamformer to provide a massive array gain that combats path loss without increasing the number of antenna array elements and to be tolerant to the near-far problem in a high interference environment. High performance UAV-assisted communications system using simultaneous wireless information and power transmission (SWIPT) in mm-wave band is presented. UAV is a moving relay powered from a ground source through a power-splitting mechanism. In mm-wave band we utilize antenna array to increase the antenna gain while keeping array size small and practical. The radiation pattern of the UAV antenna is continuously adjusted to peak towards the source and destination. Two array geometries, a line and a cross, are designed for UAV antenna. We achieve near optimal pattern, utilizing innovative low power switches instead of phase shifters which are high power consuming components and using them here defies the purpose. We maximize the end-to-end cooperative throughput by optimizing the UAV power profile, power-splitting ratio profile, antenna weights (0, 1), and UAV trajectory for amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol. We consider two cases. Case1: UAV transmits and receives data simultaneously along two predefined trajectories. The antenna weights for line and cross arrays are optimized utilizing genetic algorithm. The power profile and, power-splitting ratio profile are also optimized using the penalty method. Case2: UAV accumulates the data and power along an optimal trajectory until it reaches the vicinity of target, when it transmits data at high bit rate. Here we define the optimization of parameters mentioned in Case1, while at an optimal point along the trajectory, as sub-problem1, and finding the next optimal point as sub-problem2. Sub-problem1 is solved using the genetic algorithm and dual decomposition method. Sub-problem2 is then solved using successive concave optimization. The overall problem, i.e. cooperative throughput, is solved by reciprocal iteration over the two sub problems. The simulation results show the proposed mm-wave band cross array antenna and switches can overcome the high frequency propagation losses, hence, achieving higher power harvest and data rates. This paper presents a wideband millimeter wave (mm-Wave) high-gain multibeam antenna array fed by Butler Matrix (BM) based on groove gap waveguide (GGW) technology. First, the components of 4 × 4 GGW BM have been designed and analyzed, especially the proposed modified crossover, which greatly improves the performance of BM as feeding network. Then a 2 × 2-element subarray with three layers has been proposed, combined with the 4 × 4 GGW BM to form a 1 × 4 broadside antenna array. Finally, the prototype of high-gain wideband four-beam antenna array has been manufactured and measured. The measured results verify the superior performance of the multibeam antenna array between 26.3-29.7 GHz. The return loss (RL) can reach 15 dB and isolation between ports is also less than 15 dB, and the measured maximum gain of radiation patterns and the maximum radiation efficiency can also reach 19.05 dBi and 86.8%, respectively. A new 4-port dual-band printed Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) antenna array operating at 28 GHz and 38GHzin the mm-wave band for 5G communications is proposed in this paper. The designed MIMO antenna array consists of 4 MIMO elements structured with 8 identical patches arranged in 2 × 4 configuration and a cross-shaped defected ground plane on a physical footprint of 43.611 × 43.611 × 0.4 m m 3 Rogers RT/duroid 5880 substrate. In order to obtain the desired dual-band operation with good impedance matching, enhanced gain and bandwidth, the patch elements are designed by incorporating combinations of circular and semi-circular shaped slots, and the cross-shaped ground plane is modified with an extended circular-shaped defect. The suggested MIMO configuration offers a high gain of about 7.9 and 13.7 dB at 28 and 37.3 GHz, respectively. Furthermore, the MIMO performance metrics of the proposed design are analyzed and presented. The prototype of the designed MIMO antenna has been fabricated and measured to validate the simulation results. The simulation and measurement results show good agreement. A microstrip-fed air-substrate-integrated waveguide (ASIW) slot array with high efficiency and low cost is presented. The design cuts out the substrate material within SIW, replaces the vias with metallic sidewalls, and uses a simple microstrip line-waveguide transition to feed the slot array. Radiating slots are cut on a 5-mil brass-plate, which covers the top of the substrate cutout to resemble a hollow waveguide structure. This implementation provides a simple and efficient antenna array solution for millimeter-wave (mm-wave) applications. Meanwhile, the fabrication is compatible with the standard printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing process. To demonstrate the concept, a 4-element ASIW slot array working at the n257 band for 5G communications was designed using low-cost Rogers 4350B and FR4 substrate materials. Our simulation result shows 18% more efficiency than a conventional SIW slot array using the same substrate. The fabricated prototype shows |S11| < −15 dB over 27–29 GHz and a peak realized gain of 10.1 dBi at 28.6 GHz. This paper proposes a novel high-gain antenna element that can be used in antenna arrays that only require a limited scan range. Each high-gain antenna element uses a linear sub-array of highly-coupled open-ended waveguides. The active central element of this sub-array is directly fed, while the remaining passive waveguides are reactively loaded. The loads are implemented by short-circuits positioned at various distances from the radiating aperture. The short-circuit positions control the radiation pattern properties and the scattering parameters of the array. The proposed sub-array antenna element is optimized in the presence of the adjacent elements and provides a high gain and a flat-top main lobe. The horizontal distance between the sub-array centers is large in terms of wavelengths, which leads to limited scanning capabilities in the E-plane. However, along the vertical axis, the element spacing is around 0.6 wavelength at the central frequency that is beneficial to achieve a wider scan range in the H-plane. We show that the sub-array radiation pattern sufficiently filters the grating lobes which appear in the array factor along the E-plane. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed array configuration, an array operating at 28.0 GHz is designed.
