Abstract

The ratio {ital R} of the total cross section for {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilation into hadrons to the lowest-order QED cross section for {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{r arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} has been measured for center-of-mass energies ranging from 50 to 61.4 GeV. If we allow for an overall shift of {minus}4.9%, about 1.5 times our estimated normalization error, the results are consistent with the standard-model predictions.

Abstract

We report results of a study of four-lepton final states produced in e+e− collisions at center-of-mass energies from 50 to 61.4 GeV using the AMY detector at the TRISTAN collider. For the cases where two or three charged tracks are produced at large angles relative to the beam direction, the cross sections agree with QED. However, we observe an excess of e+e−→e+e−μ+μ− events with four tracks at wide angles and with dimuon mass less than 1.0 GeV/c2.

Abstract

We present the general properties of multihadron final states produced by {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilation at center-of-mass energies from 52 to 57 GeV in the AMY detector at the KEK collider TRISTAN. Global shape, inclusive charged-particle, and particle-flow distributions are presented. Our measurements are compared with QCD+fragmentation models that use either leading-logarithmic parton-shower evolution or QCD matrix elements at the parton level, and either string or cluster fragmentation for hadronization.

Abstract

The forward-backward asymmetry of quarks produced in {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilations, summed over all flavors, is measured at {radical}{ital s} between 50 and 60.8 GeV. Methods of determining the charge direction of jet pairs are discussed. The asymmetry is found to agree with the five-flavor standard model.

Abstract

Using 123 multihadronic inclusive muon-production ${e}^{+}$${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ annihilation events at an average c.m. energy of 55.2 GeV, we extracted the forward-backward charge asymmetry of the ${e}^{+}$${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}bb\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} process and the R ratio for bb\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} production. We used an analysis method in which the behavior of the c quark and lighter quarks is assumed, with only that of the b quark left indeterminate. The results, ${A}_{b}$=-0.72\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.28(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13(syst) and ${R}_{b}$=0.57\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.16\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.10, are consistent with the standard model.

Abstract

The total cross section for e + e − annihilation into hadrons has been measured for CM energies ranging from 50 to 57 GeV. We fit the predictions of the standard model to these measurements and those at lower energies. The mass of the Z 0 boson, M Z , and the QCD scale parameter, Λ MS , are derived from the fit. The results are M Z =88.6 −1.8 +2.0 GeV/ c 2 , and Λ MS =0.15 −0.11 +0.16 GeV .

Abstract

Multihadronic e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation events containing final-state leptons have been investigated with a 4.7-pb/sup -1/ data sample at c.m. energies of 50 and 52 GeV. The number of low-thrust events (Tless than or equal to0.8) with isolated leptons is consistent with the expectation of the standard model with five quark flavors. Limits on the production of new quarks and leptons are reported.

Abstract

The R ratio for e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation into hadronic final states is measured to be 4.34 +- 0.45 +- 0.30 and 4.23 +- 0.20 +- 0.21 at c.m. energies of 50 and 52 GeV, respectively. From these values of R and an analysis of the event shapes we deduce a 95%-confidence-level upper limit for the production rate of new heavy charge +(2/3e or -(1/3e quarks to be 0.19 units of R.

Abstract

A search for unstable heavy neutral leptons has been made at center-of-mass energies from 50 to 60.8 GeV with the AMY detector at the KEK Storage ring TRISTAN. The neutral leptons are assumed to decay via mixing to electrons and muons. Events with two leptons were searched for. No evidence for their existence was found. Limits in the mass range \ensuremath{\le}28.1 GeV/${c}^{2}$ and mixing-parameter range 9\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}10}$\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{\Vert}${U}_{\mathrm{lL}}$${\ensuremath{\Vert}}^{2}$\ensuremath{\le}1 are presented for Dirac- and Majorana-type neutrinos.

Abstract

We have observed ..lambda../sub c/ baryons in nonresonant e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at energies around ..sqrt..s = 10.5 GeV through their decay to ..lambda pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/. We measure the branching fraction to be (2.8 +- 0.7 +- 1.1)%. The momentum spectrum of the ..lambda../sub c/ is similar to that of charmed mesons, providing a constraint on models of charmed-quark hadronization.

Abstract

A measurement is presented of the inclusive production of charged ${D}^{*}$ and neutral $D$ mesons from nonresonant ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilation in the energy region near the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance. The momentum distribution shows a large contribution at high momenta as expected for heavy quark production. Comparison of the spectrum with several phenomenological models is made. The relative yields of the ${D}^{*}$ and $D$ mesons indicate that the charm cross section is dominated by the ${D}^{*}$ contribution.

Abstract

Three-jet events produced in {ital e}{sup +}e{sup {minus}} annihilations are used to provide comparisons between quark and gluon jets. Differences between quark-induced and gluon-induced jets are observed. Quark jets tend to have a more tightly collimated structure than gluon jets, which is reflected in the concentration of a larger fraction of the jet's energy near the jet axis.

Abstract

We report measurements from CLEO detector of the rate of ..xi.. and ..lambda.. production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ interactions in the upsilon region. Hyperon production from the decay of the UPSILON(1S) is compared with continuum e/sup +/e/sup -/ data. The ratio of the production rates of ..lambda.. (and Lambda-bar) to K/sup 0/ (and K-bar /sup 0/) on the UPSILON(1S) is 0.21 +- 0.03, much larger than in the continuum, 0.07 +- 0.01. The ratios of the production rates of the ..xi.. and the ..lambda.. are comparable, 0.10 +- 0.02 (UPSILON(1S)) and 0.07 +- 0.02 (continuum). We discuss some implications of the data for gluon and quark fragmentation models.

Abstract

We present evidence for the non-Abelian nature of QCD from a study of multijet events produced in ${e}^{+}$${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ annihilations from \ensuremath{\surd}s =50 to 57 GeV in the AMY detector at the KEK storage ring TRISTAN. A comparison of the three-jet event fraction at TRISTAN to the fraction of the DESY storage ring PETRA shows that the QCD coupling strength ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}$ decreases with increasing ${Q}^{2}$. In addition, measurements of the angular distributions of four-jet events show evidence for the triple-gluon vertex.

We have measured the inclusive branching ratio for B..-->..phiX to be 0.023 +- 0.006 +- 0.005. The momentum distribution of the phi mesons is compared with that expected from the cascade decays B..-->..F..-->..phi and B..-->..D..-->..phi. .AE

Abstract

Measurements of the ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ cross section above $B\overline{B}$ threshold are reported. Structures are observed which could be the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(5S)$ and $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(6S)$ resonances. The masses and widths are given and compared with various potential-model predictions. Average charged multiplicities and inclusive lepton yields are also presented.

Abstract

A search for pair production for fourth-generation sequential leptons in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at a center-of-mass energy ..sqrt..s = 56 GeV is reported. Event topologies corresponding to the cases where one particle decays leptonically while the other decays hadronically as well as those where both particles decay hadronically were explored. We set a 95%-confidence-level lower limit of 27.6 GeV/c/sup 2/ for the mass of a fourth-generation lepton.

We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle correlations in decays of the UPSILON(1S) resonance and in nonresonant annihilations of electrons and positrons at center-of-mass energy 10.49 GeV, just below BB-bar threshold. These data were obtained using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and provide information on the production of ..pi.., K, rho, K(, phi, p, ..lambda.., and ..xi.. in quark and gluon jets. The average multiplicity of hadrons per event for upsilon decays (compared with continuum annihilations) is 11.4 (10.5) pions, 2.4 (2.2) kaons, 0.6 (0.5) rho/sup 0/, 1.2 (0.8) K(, 0.6 (0.4) protons and antiprotons, 0.15 (0.08) phi, 0.19 (0.07) ..lambda.. and Lambda-bar, and 0.016 (0.005) ..xi../sup -/ and Xi-bar /sup +/. We have also seen evidence for eta and f/sup 0/ production. The most significant differences between upsilon and continuum final states are (1) the inclusive energy spectra fall off more rapidly with increasing particle energy in upsilon decays, (2) the production of heavier particles, especially baryons, is not as strongly suppressed in upsilon decays, and (3) baryon and antibaryon are more likely to be correlated at long range in upsilon decay than in continuum events.

Abstract

By studying ${e}^{+}$${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ annihilations in the center-of-mass energy range between 50 and 60.8 GeV, we have established a 95%-confidence-level lower limit on the mass of a fourth-generation charge -(1/3 quark b' of 27.2 GeV. In contrast with all previous searches, this limit has been obtained through consideration of the decay processes b'\ensuremath{\rightarrow}b\ensuremath{\gamma} and b'\ensuremath{\rightarrow}bg aswell as b'\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{cW}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$. For the cases where any one of the three decay modes dominates, we obtain higher mass limits.
