Abstract: Hierarchical ZnO@NiO core–shell nanorod arrays are prepared by a seed assisted hydrothermal method combined a chemical bath deposition assisted annealing in N2 atmosphere. ZnO nanorod array grows on Ni foil, presenting vertical alignment, small diameter and appropriate density. NiO are coated onto ZnO nanorod array, showing the shell structure of the wrinkled film. The synthesis mechanism is illustrated. ZnO@NiO core–shell nanorod array shows a remarkable composite effect, delivering higher discharge capacity (525mAhg−1 at 200mAg−1 after 50 cycles) and excellent cycling stability in comparison to single ZnO nanorod array, being of great potential for high-performance Li-ion batteries.
