Ditomus cephalotes Dejean, 1826: 482. The specimen hereby recognized as holotype is a male bearing the labels: “ cephalotes m.”, “ Tanger. B. Jenisson ”, “ex-Museo Chaudoir” and “ Holotype of Ditomus cephalotes Dejean, 1826 desig. by J. Serrano ”. Thus, labels match the description: Il se trouve sur la côte de Barbarie, et il m’a été donné par M. le comte de Jenisson comme venant des environs de Tanger. Since this was the sole specimen found in Dejean’s collection at Paris with the original labels, the specimen is recognized as the holotype by monotypy. The species may be easily identified following the keys of Fuente (1927) and Antoine (1959). The taxonomic placement and limits of the genus Odontocarus has been subjected to many controversies (see Wrase, 1994), but nowadays is currently ranked as an independent genus; it includes seven species with a Centro Asiatic Mediterranean distribution pattern (Kataev & Wrase, 2017b). Anisodactylus intermedius Dejean, 1829: 139. The specimen here recognized as the holotype is a female bearing the labels “mentun subdentatum/calcare trifido”, “ intermedius mihi in Gal. mer. Perpignan”, “ex-Museo Chaudoir”, “ L. Bedel vidit 1897” and “ Holotype of Anisodactylus intermedius Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. The species is currently included in the monotypic subgenus Pseudodichirius Lutshnik, 1921b (Kataev & Wrase, 2017a), according to the trifid apical spur of protibial, pilosity of elytra, valvifers and other characters. Morphological characters of the holotype are correctly described in current classifications (e.g., Jeannel, 1942; Noonan, 1996). Harpalus (Ophonus) hirsutulus Dejean, 1829: 226. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a female bearing the labels: “female symbol”, “ hirsutulus Stév. in Rus. mer. Caucase”, “Steven.” and “ Lectotype of Harpalus (Ophonus) hirsutulus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. Dejean (1829) described this species based on four specimens: Je possède quatre individus de cette espèce: le premier m’a été envoyé par M. Stéven, comme venant du Caucase.... The first mentioned is hereby designed as the lectotype. The species is currently named as Parophonus (Ophonomimus) hirsutulus (Dejean, 1829). Schauberger (1923: 72) created the subgenus Ophonomimus to include only this species according to the lack of pubescence in the paraglossa, mentum without median tooth, pronotum not emarginate posteriorly, etc. Then, Schauberger (1933) considered P. interstitialis Reitter, 1899 as a valid species and also included it within Ophonomimus. Keys to identify the species are found in Jeannel (1942), Sciaky (1992) and Wrase (2004, 2011). Harpalus goudotii Dejean, 1829: 304. The lectotype (present designation; recognized, but not published by B. Kataev) is a male, labelled: “Goudot? Barbaria”, blue card “Goudot”, “ Harpalus goudotii Dejean, 1829 desig. por J. Serrano”, “Lectoype” and “ H. sulphuripes goudotii Dejean det. B. Kataev 2002 ”. Dejean (1829) studied four beetles as stated in the description: Je possède quatre individus mâles de cette espèce: deux ont été rapportés de Tanger par M. Goudot; le troisième a été pris dans le département des Basses – Alpes... This taxon is considered a subspecies of Harpalus sulphuripes Germar, 1824, mostly on the basis of having red-coloured femora (instead of darkened) and the geographic disjunction: the nominal subspecies inhabits Central and Mediterranean Europe whereas H. sulphuripes goudotii inhabits the Maghreb, Andalusia and Sardegna (Kataev & Wrase, 2017c). The mention of Dejean of a beetle of this subspecies inhabiting the Basses Alpes is likely erroneous on geographic grounds, and also when considering the fact that mutations on femur colour may occur (ab. lucidipennis Schauberger, 1934). The aedeagus of the lectotype matches that illustrated by Antoine (1959) (that illustrated by Jeannel, 1942, page 676 was erroneous according to Antoine, 1959: page 406). I could not find other beetles of this subspecies in Dejean’s collection to compare more aedeagi. Harpalus oblitus Dejean, 1829: 273. The specimen here recognized as holotype is a male glued to a white card that is pinned together with other labels: “ oblitus m. in Dalmatia ”, “ TYPE. Kataev des.” and “ Holotype of Harpalus oblitus oblitus Dejean, 1829. J. Serrano vidit.”. In the same box of Chaudoir's collection containing the beetles of Dejean (box number 175) it is also found the type of Harpalus oblitus patruelis Dejean, 1829: 275, together with other specimens, bearing various kinds of labels: white card with glued beetle/white card with glued genitalia/white card “ patruelis m. in Hispania”/red card “ TYPE ”/white card “ H. patruelis Dej. = subspecies of oblitus Dej. Z. Mylnář det. 1973”/ Kataev/ Harpalus oblitus patruelis B. Kataev det 2002. The taxonomy and distribution of the subspecies of H. oblitus was reviewed by Kataev (1993). Harpalus pumilus Dejean 1829: 305. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a male bearing the labels “ pumilus m. in Gallia mer.”, “ tibialis St. Ilyrion?” and “ Lectotype of Harpalus pumilus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. The individual I hereby design as lectotype has labels with the original writing of Dejean stating “Gallia mer”. I saw a second specimen with a card attached to the pin stating “TYPE”, but without any original label hand-written by Dejean, and there was no statement of authorship of designation. H. pumilus Dejean, 1829 (not H. pumilus Sturm, 1818) is currently considered a synonym of H. subcylindricus Dejean, 1829 (Kataev, 1989; Marggi et al., 2010; Kataev & Wrase 2017c). Although Dejean described first H. pumilus, this name entered in homonym with H. pumilus Sturm, 1818. As I did not dissect the aedeagus of the type of I couldn’t compare it with the figures of H. subcylindricus published by Kataev (1989) or Marggi et al. (2010). However, the lectotype matches the characters nowadays considered as diagnostic for H. subcylindricus. A key to separate H. anxius (Duftschmid, 1812) and H. subcylindricus is found in Wrase (2004). Acinopus giganteus Dejean, 1831: 813. The specimen here recognized as holotype is a male bearing the labels: “ giganteus Kollar in Hispania mer. in Cadix D”, “ex-Museo Chaudoir” and “ Holotype of Acinopus giganteus Dejean, 1831 desig. by J. Serrano ”. Acinopus giganteus is currently included in the subgenus Acinopus and differs from other related species in the lack of punctures in elytron intervals 5 and 7, the lack of ventral pubescence on male protarsomeres forming two rows, and its large body size. It is solely known from Andalusia (Serrano, 2020), south of River Guadalquivir. Acupalpus suturalis Dejean, 1829: 448. The specimen here recognized as holotype is a male bearing labels “ suturalis Ziegler h. in Dalmatia” and “ Holotype of Acupalpus suturalis Dejean, 1829. J. Serrano vidit.”. Dejean (1829) did not mention the number of beetles he studied. From the brief description it is inferred that he only had a single specimen at hand. The beetle I hereby recognize as the holotype shows the dorsal dark colouration with the first elytron interval yellowish coloured, the punctures of pronotum basis and the smooth head without microsculpture, characters that are proper of the species (Jeannel, 1942; Wrase, 2004, 2011). Stenolophus elegans Dejean, 1829: 412. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a male bearing a white label “ elegans m. in Dalmatia” and a red label “ Lectotype of Stenolophus elegans Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. Dejean (1829) could examine a number of beetles to describe the species. I have selected a male from Dalmatia that is well conserved and clearly shows the characters of main taxonomic interest: large body size, male protarsomeres notably dilated, antennomeres 1-2 pale, etc. (Jeannel, 1942; Wrase, 2004, 2011). Ditomus cordatus Dejean, 1825: 441. The specimen here recognized as holotype is a male bearing the labels: “ cordatus m.”, “Hispania”, “ex-Museo Chaudoir” and “ Holotype of Ditomus cordatus Dejean, 1825 desig. by J. Serrano ”. Dejean (1825) stated Puente del Arzobispo as the sampling locality which is in the westernmost part of the province of Toledo, in the southern Iberian Meseta. There are no details on the number and sex of the studied specimens, possibly because Dejean saw only one beetle. Thus, this specimen is recognized as the holotype of Ditomus cordatus. Its characteristics fully agree with those mentioned in the original description and the current concept of the species (Fuente, 1927; Antoine, 1959). In the collection there are other specimens placed besides the holotype but none bear any label indicating that they were used by Dejean when writing the original description, nor show the words “Hispania” “Puente del Arzobispo”, “ cordatus mihi”, etc. The species was placed within the genus Carterus subgenus Tschitscherinellus by Csiki (1906: p. 60). No other taxon was included in this subgenus and thus Carterus cordatus Dejean, 1825 became the type species of the subgenus by monotypy. No criteria were indicated by Csiki to erect the new subgenus. Tschitscherinellus has been ranked either as a subgenus of Carterus (e.g., Csiki, 1906; Fuente, 1927) or Odontocarus (e.g., Antoine, 1959; Machado, 1992), or as genus (Stichel, 1923). Wrase (1994) considered that Tschitscherinellus has morphological peculiarities that justify its ranking as genus. A key to this species is provided by Wrase (2011: 163). He probably pinned a red label stating Holotype in this specimen. Therefore, it presently bears the following labels: white labels “ quadricollis Dahl, in Sicilia alp. D.” “Dahl”, “ HOLOTYPE ”. Harpalus dispar Dejean, 1829: 267. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a male bearing the labels: “ dispar mihi in Gallia mer.” and “ Lectotype of Harpalus dispar Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. The selected specimen hereby designated as lectotype matches the data of the original description, and its diagnostic characters were highlighted by Sciaky (1987), clearly showing the differences with its relative Ophonus (Ophonus) ardosiacus (Lutshnik, 1922). The recognition of this specimen as the holotype of the species is based on the statement of Dejean (1829): Je ne possède qu’un individu mâle de cet insecte, qui m’a été envoyé pai’ M. Schuppel, comme venant du Portugal. The characteristics of the holotype slightly differ from those described in Serrano & Ortuño (2001), in that it has a pronotum side less rounded and the posterior angle is more marked, not so rounded. Harpalus zabroides Dejean, 1829: 343. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a male bearing labels: “ Moscou ”, “zabroides m. in Russia ”, “ G.E. Ball H 18”, “ Harpalus zabroides Dej. det. George E. Ball ” and “ Lectotype of Harpalus zabroides Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. Dejean (1829) stated Il m’a été envoyé de Moscou par M. de Laveau. He compared this species to H. hirtipes (Panzer, 1796), a species that is figured after H. zabroides, with detailed comments. I have not found any publication of G.E. Ball concerning this species. A key to identify it is found in Wrase (2004). The specimen here designated as lectotype is a female bearing labels “proximus m. in Russia merid.”, “ Lectotype ” and “ Stenolophus proximus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. Dejean (1829) clearly described the character combination of the species currently found in modern taxonomic works: dorsum almost black with blue reflect (somewhat iridescent), first antennomere pale and contrasting with the dark following ones, pronotum foveae marked and punctate, sides of pronotum and elytra narrowly depigmented. Keys to identify the species are available from many authors. Acupalpus mauritanicus Dejean, 1829: 480. Dejean (1829) stated that he studied at least two individuals. The specimen designated as lectotype is a female bearing the labels “ mauritanicus m. in Barbaria Tanger ”, “D. Solier” and “ Lectotype of Acupalpus mauritanicus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano”. Amblystomus mauritanicus is distributed in Morocco and western Iberia (Serrano, 2013), and is easily determined due to its large body size (5-6 mm), slender antennae and asymmetrical labrum. Harpalus cupreu s Dejean, 1829: 281. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a male bearing the labels: “ cupreus m. in Dalmatia.” and “ Lectotype of Harpalus cupreus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. At present there are five subspecies within H. cupreus (Wrase, 2011). This lectotype likely corresponds to the subspecies Harpalus cupreus fastuosus Faldermann, 1836, distributed in Central and Eastern Europe, Anatolia and the Levant (Kataev & Wrase, 2017c). A probable relict population exists in Middle Atlas (H. cupreus asaphus Antoine, 1941). Harpalus contemptus Dejean, 1829: 277. Lectotype (present designation: beetle labelled but not published by Pantel and Mlynář) is a male bearing labels “ contemptus m. in Hispania”, “ex-Museo Chaudoir”, “ R. P. Pantel ”, “ HOLOTYPE ”, “vidit 1974 Z. Mylnář ”, and “ Lectotype of Harpalus contemptus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. Dejean (1829) mentioned that he studied two individuals collected in Spain. Possibly, Mlynář only received a single beetle for study and this is why he labelled it with a red card “ HOLOTYPE ”. The species is a synonym of H. tenuelimbatus Reitter, 1900, whose syntypes were designated by Kataev (1989). Kataev corrected the statement of Jeanne (1971), who considered H. tenuelimbatus as a synonym of H. distinguendus (Duftschmid, 1812). H. contemptus is closely related to H. oblitus Dejean, 1829 and is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula; this may explain the lack of works describing its characteristics except for the review of Kataev (1989), who also illustrated the aedeagus. In the key of Fuente (1927) the species appears as an aberration of H. oblitus Dejean, 1829, mixed with other aberrations not easy to be separated. Mlynář (1979) did not refer to it when commenting on the synonyms of H. oblitus. Other available key to separate H. contemptus and H. oblitus patruelis is found in Novoa Docet (2015). Comparison between H. contemptus and H. oblitus patruelis (the subspecies inhabiting the Iberian Peninsula) shows that H. contemptus has a very fine and shallow microsculpture in the elytra that is more marked and visible in H. oblitus patruelis; the pronotum side of H. contemptus is almost straight toward posterior angle and not arcuate, the posterior angle of pronotum is well-marked and not rounded; the pronotum basis is somewhat arcuate whereas is straight in H. oblitus; the aedeagus is much more robust in H. contemptus and the endophallus shows basally two small teeth not seen in H. oblitus patruelis. Acupalpus exiguus Dejean, 1829: 456. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a female bearing a white label with “ exiguus mihi in Gallia merid.” (these words are followed by an illegible word) and a red label “ Lectotype of Acupalpus exiguus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano”. The original material was diverse. Of these beetles I have selected that one collected in South France. It shows a dorsal dark colouration including the appendages, a rather small body size (2.7 mm), the pronotum with rounded posterior angles, etc. (Jeannel, 1942; Wrase, 2004, 2011). These characters separate this species from A. luteatus (Duftschmid, 1812) and A. dubius Schilsky, 1888. Harpalus lateralis Dejean, 1829: 278. The holotype is a male bearing the following labels: “male symbol”, “ lateralis m. in Hispania”, “ HOLOTYPE ”, “vidit 1974. Z. Mylnář det. 1974” and “ Holotype of Harpalus lateralis Dejean, 1829. J. Serrano vidit”. It was probably Mylnář who placed the label “ HOLOTYPE ”, as he examined types of Dejean’s collection (Mylnář, 1979). However, he did not publish any statement about the recognition of the holotype. Fuente (1927) and Antoine (1959) keyed the species. Kataev (1993) also included a detailed illustration of the aedeagus. Harpalus (Ophonus) obsoletus Dejean, 1829: 232. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a male bearing labels “ obsoletus m. in Gallia merid.”, “ex-Museo Chaudoir” and “ Lectotype of Harpalus (Ophonus) obsoletus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. The lectotype shows a transverse pronotum slightly cordiform, with posterior angles of pronotum well marked but not protruding backwards, and the prosternum slightly punctured. These characters allow to distinguish this species from D. pallidus. In both species the dark spot of elytra is variable, from clearly marked to almost erased; this colour variation is perhaps related to life in salty places. Acupalpus luridus Dejean, 1829: 454. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a female bearing labels “ luridus m. in Hispania” and “ Lectotype of Acupalpus luridus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. The name is currently considered a synonym of Acupalpus flavicollis (Sturm, 1825) (see Jaeger, 1989). As in the case of Acupalpus atratus, the specimen of A. luridus of Dejean had been already validly published by Sturm in 1825. It is strange that Dejean did not notice Sturm’s work, as Dejean himself mentioned that he worked with the type material sent by Sturm. Jaeger (1988) discussed the nomenclatural problems involving A. dubius, A. flavicollis and other taxa of Acupalpus, either with or without a dorsal pore in the second half of the third interval of elytron. Harpalus siculus Dejean, 1829: 316. The lectotype is a male bearing labels “a male symbol, “ siculus m. in Sicilia ”, “Schüppel”, “ HOLOTYPE ”, “vidit Z. Mylnář det 1974”, “ LECTOTYPE ” and “ Holotype of Harpalus siculus Dejean, 1829, J. Serrano vidit.”. The card stating LECTOTYPE was likely placed by Mylnář, but this is a mislabelling as the specimen is the holotype (see below). Dejean (1829) briefly stated the origin of the specimen: Il se trouve en Sicile. From the original description it is inferred that he only could study a single specimen sent by M. Schüppel. Thus, this specimen becomes the holotype of the species by monotypy. Although Mylnář did not formally publish the recognition of this specimen as the holotype, it is clear from the label that he recognized the type condition of the specimen he saw. Keys to the species are available in Fuente (1927) and Antoine (1959). Acupalpus nigriceps Dejean, 1829: 453. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a female bearing labels “ nigriceps m. in Gal. mer” and “ Lectotype of Acupalpus nigriceps Dejean, 1829 design. by J. Serrano ”. The name is currently considered a synonym of Acupalpus flavicollis (Sturm, 1825). The lectotype shows the characteristics of A. flavicollis (Sturm, 1825) concerning most key characters (e.g., lack of dorsal pore in the second half of third interval of elytron) although dorsal coloration is somewhat different. Harpalus pygmaeus Dejean, 1829: 303. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a male glued to a white card together with the penis and the abdomen, labelled: “ brunnicornis Sturm Dalmatia” and “ Lectotype of Harpalus pygmaeus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano”. None of the beetles handled by Dejean was found with a label stating “ pygmaeus ” written by Dejean. However, Dejean (1829: 304) after the Latin description of Harpalus pygmaeus wrote in a line DEJ. Cat. p. 14, and in the following line H. Brunnicornis Sturm. Catal. p. 148. Thereafter, Dejean mentioned Dalmatie as one of the many places where H. pygmaeus was found. For this reason, I hereby design the above mentioned specimen as the lectotype of the species. Harpalus (Ophonus) chloroticus Dejean, 1829: 234. The specimen here recognized as holotype is a male bearing labels: “ chloroticus m. in Sicilia ” “Famin.” “ex-Museo Chaudoir” and “ Holotype of Harpalus (Ophonus) chloroticus Dejean, 1829. J. Serrano vidit.”. Recognition of the holotype is based on Dejean’s description: Je ne possède qu’un individu mâle de cette espèce; il m’a été envoyé par M. Famin, comme venant de Sicile. According to Dejean (1829), H. chloroticus resembles to H. pallidus but differs in having the head and pronotum more reddish, punctures smaller, basal foveae of pronotum more marked, elytra more convex and a smaller dark spot on the disk. Acupalpus metallescens Dejean, 1829: 482. The specimen designated as lectotype is a male bearing the labels “ metallescens m. in Dalmatia” and “ Lectotype of Acupalpus metallescens Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. The beetle from Dalmatia is hereby designated as lectotype taking into account that it is well preserved, matches the original description and labels, and also agrees with the current morphological concept of the species (see below). Jeannel (1942: 728) wrote that the “type” came from midi de la France, a comment without formal taxonomic value. Wrase (2009) formally designed as syntypes beetles deposited in the Collection Johann Friedrich Schüppel, MNHU, Berlin. Schüppel was an entomologist who was well-known for sending valuable material to Dejean, that became the basis for Dejean’s formal descriptions of many new species. Wrase (2009) published morphological details of syntypes, including the illustration of male aedeagus. Harpalus saxicola Dejean, 1829: 316. The specimen here recognized as holotype is a male bearing the labels: “ saxicola Godet in Russia mer. Tauria”, “v Godet”, “ TYPE.” and “ Holotype of Harpalus saxicola Dejean, 1829. J. Serrano vidit.”. There was no statement about the authorship of the red label marked “TYPE”; it was perhaps left by Mlynař (1979, p. 73), who was able to study a number of types of Dejean’s collection. I hereby recognize this specimen as the holotype by monotypy, according to the original description. A key to this species is available in Wrase (2011). The specimen here designated as lectotype is a male bearing the labels: “ subquadratus m. in Gallia merid.”, “Aude.” and “ Lectotype of Harpalus (Ophonus) subquadratus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. Dejean (1829) probably studied a number of specimens of O. subquadratus as he stated that: Il se trouve dans le midi de la France... The current concept of the species matches the characters shown by the lectotype, as seen in Jeannel (1942), Sciaky, 1987), Wrase (2004, 2011). Data to distinguish H. punctatostriatus from H. dispar are available for both the nominal H. dispar dispar (e.g., Fuente, 1927; Jeannel, 1942) and the eastern populations of H. dispar elegantulus Ménétriés, 1832 and H. dispar splendens Gebler, 1830 (Kataev & Wrase 1995; Wrase 2011). Harpalus (Ophonus) pallidus Dejean, 1829: 234. The specimen here designated as lectotype is a male bearing labels “ pallidus m. in Hispania”, “ex-Museo Chaudoir” and “ Lectotype, and a red card stating Harpalus (Ophonus) pallidus Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. Dejean (1829) stated in the description that: Je possède trois individus de cette espèce: j’ai trouvé les deux premiers en Espagne, près de Palencia.... The lectotype shows a cordiform pronotum with side notably sinuate before the posterior angle, which is well-marked and protruding backward. The elytra show a dark spot well-marked, that is paler in the female from the same locality (paralectotype). Likewise, it also shows strong punctures in the prosternum, a diagnostic character not mentioned by Dejean. For keys to identify the species see Fuente (1927), Jeannel (1942) and Antoine (1959). Anisodactylus virens Dejean, 1829: 135. The specimen hereby designated as lectotype is a male, labeled “ virens var. distinctus Sol. Gal. merid. D.”, “Solier”, “ex-Museo Chaudoir” and “ Lectotype of Anisodactlus virens Dejean, 1829 desig. by J. Serrano ”. Concerning this species Dejean (1829) stated that: Il se trouve assez communément dans le midi de la France, et il m’a été envoyé par M. Solier. Lately, Dejean (1831) briefly described a new variety named distinctus by Solier don’t la coleur est presque entièrement noire. This name is nowadays considered a synonym of Anisodactylus virens virens (Kataev & Wrase, 2017a). For this reason, the specimen has been designed as lectotype. It is dorsally darkcoloured; there are other beetles in the collection (possibly paralectotypes) with various degrees of green metallic lustre. Variation in dorsal colouration is common in carabids living in salty places. Its characteristics match those of the original description and the current concept of the species. A. virens is currently included in the subgenus Hexatrichus Tschitschérine, 1898, that is characterized by a labrum with many setae at each side, the trifid internal spur of protibia and sexual differences in the anterior leg. The subgenus includes two species which are very similar but can be distinguished by the shape of pronotum and median lobe of aedeagus (e.g., Jeannel, 1942, p. 604). A. virens is polytypic; the nominal subspecies occupies South France, North Italy and the Iberian Peninsula whereas the subspecies A. virens winthemi Dejean, 1831 inhabits Egypt, Sicily, NW Afrique, Canary Islands (Wrase, 2009) and Madeira. Bedel (1898) and Antoine (1959) described the characteristics of this last subspecies; both authors noted that dorsal colouration is variable, and in Algeria and Maroc is more greenish.
